Hymes is a great prof. There are some petty people, who no doubt did poorly in his class, that have displayed their ignorance here. Too bad for you.

One of the best psychology professors at U of M-D. Dr. Hymes is well spoken, funny, helpful, and, although he would deny it, very entertaining. He has an incredible knowledge of his field, and is definately a teacher I'd recommend to anyone.

Gives great lectures, very entertaining, clear, and makes a lot of jokes which are actually funny. You need to do the readings or your screwed, and know how to apply information, not just spit back out lecture notes. One of my favorite professors at UMD.

We got our first test back, I am satisfied with grade but it's still lower than I expected. His study guides are helpful, and he's a wonderful lecturer. Very vague tests kind of, gotta read chapters or you are screwed on multiple choice. One of the better non-boring psych classes to take.Recommen

Well, we only had two exams. Classes are very interesting, he is a wonderful lecturer. Tests are somewhat vague, however, if you study notes and book you'll do fine. He cares for students, and this was one ofthe very few psych courses that are not commonsense like parentchild relations. take it!

great prof but extremely disorganized. Go ahead and throw away your syllabus on the first day because that's how long you'll be on track. Other than that, great lectures and learned a lot.

Overall the coolest professor/greatest personality on campus. Fair grader. You will learn the material well and you will not be allowed to blow it off. Only concern: he always falls behind toward the end of the semester so be prepared for the work to pile up near finals.

Great personality with an interesting and engaging teaching style. Has difficulty following the syllabus because there is so much class discussion. Overall highly recommended if you are a self-motivated student, (so that you will keep up on your own and not be swamped at the semester's end).

8 wk. class- kept you in class for full 3 hrs. but good lecture. Great professor. You need to be a motivated self learner to do well in his class. Tests are difficult. You must read and read carefully. We had 4 tests and an extra credit paper.

For summer session the class was hard, you must read the book, the class was very entertaining and I learned alot, a fun class you won't want to miss or fall asleep in.

Hymes is the coolest. He's a lot of fun and super nice. He's only hard if you don't want to learn or pay attention...and if you don't, well, then get out of college.

Great prof! Very interesting and funny too! Classes are pretty much the same format. 3 or 4 tests, a paper, some online work. Nothing too bad. Definitely would recommend any class with him!

Great professor. I would say that, if anything, he challenges the guys more and goes a litte easier on the women. Maybe there's some reason he teaches 481 and 320 differently. Anyway, definitely take him, he's always fair.

Hymes is great. I've taken several classes with him, and he teaches them all well. Be willing to earn your grade, but don't worry, work is not excessive, and he is a very fair grader. In all the classes I've had with him, he's been equally easy/hard on men and women. Gender doesn't matter so much as the relative stupidity of the remark you make.

I've since transferred to UM-Ann Arbor, but Dr. Hymes is easily one of the best professors I've had in my undergraduate university experience. He always keeps lecture interesting (though I'll admit I'm biased, since I love Social Psych to begin with). Fairly easily class, but engaging nonetheless. I wish all of my profs were this good.

Challenging class, but he helps to keep it as simple as possible. Class work loaded up at end of semester, so was difficult to understand, but took tons of extra time out to help class. Overall GREAT teacher who's very concerned of students, one of best at university.

At first, I didn't think I would like Social Psychology. I took it because it filled my upper-level requirements AND fit into my schedule. But as soon as Hymes came in His energy and Enthusiasm made the class very interesting. I participated more in that class than any other. He is fair and his exams are straight-forward.

Very helpful, humorous, and engaging professor who made it easy by giving out a study guide on his exams. I got an 87% on the first exam, a 94% on the second, and ended up getting an A overall. There are 8 discussion questions throughout the semester that really do not require heavy thought. Excellent professor--highly recommended. Perfect!

It is funny how these students with complaints cannot even write without grammatical errors. Perhaps you should consider your own intellectual limitations before you blame others for your lousy grade.

He's an amazing professor. These people probably got a bad grade because they think they should be able to get away without studying. It's a UNIVERISTY people! You have to study to get a good grade!

Study guides list everything that will be on tests. Also, he tells you what the essay for each test will be. Lecture is a must if you wish to do well. Very knowledgable professor. Challenges you to think in class. Fun.

I got the code wrong, but I took Hymes for Social Psych Summer, 07. At first I hated the class but he's a good professor and makes me think about the subject a year later. The tests were pretty tricky: be careful with trick questions and use the study guide in that optional book. I didn't for the 1st test then did for the others and aced it.

i agree this class was not a breeze. he gave me an A but it wasn't an easy A, like you have to take it seriously. his exams test you on how you analyze the concepts so just plain memorizing will not take you far. He explains stuff pretty well, and yeah sometimes he could be an ass.

I didn't study a lick and I got a B plus. Then again, I am a genius. Hymes is good.

MUST attend lecture AND read textbook. ALL of the textbook readings must be read, he will test you on it! If you know the lecture notes and what the text says it's an easy A for sure. He tells you what the essays will be in advance.

He doesn't really like to teach intro classes, but if you can get him for one, take it! 4 tests, 50 questions, multiple choice, drops your lowest grade and throws out questions that lots of people get wrong. do the extra case studies, for credit, they are easy! I missed a decent amount of lecture and never opened my book and managed an A-

Went into the class thinking it was an easy A and came out with a C. Very nice and interesting guy but its too bad what he teaches is completly different than what is on the tests.

Dr. Hymes is a fantastic teacher. He rekindled my passion for psychology, and I've gone on to get my doctorate. Few graduate school teachers are as knowledgable, captivating and entertaining as Dr. Hymes.

He break down everything in detail even by examples. Attendance is not mandatory but it is recommended for decent grade. Take good notes and read handouts or readings in the book. Good professor I would take him again

I've had Hymes for several psych classes and enjoyed every one of them! He's extremely knowledgeable about the subject material and engages his students. However, he's not an easy teacher. If you don't put forth the effort, you won't do well. With that being said, I would recommend him to anyone. Truly a fun and interactive experience!!!

Dr. Hymes is amazing! I took him for social psych and it was great. He makes learning the subject fun. We were supposed to have 3 tests and a paper, but he ended up combining test 2 and 3. Test include a handful of terms and/or concepts to be defined, about 35 multiple choice, and an essay that he goes over in class. Take this class!!!!

I enjoyed taking social psych with this professor. He strictly lectures using the ck board but taking notes is pretty easy. Test aren't really a problem as long as you go to class and study.

I seriously think I'd be able to teach a Psychology class after having hymes. He's honestly one of the best professors at UMD. Good thing about Hymes is he challenges you, and that is how college should be. Professors who are "easy" aren't doing a good job at preparing you grad school. With that being said, Hymes is the BEST!

Without a doubt the best professor yet. 3 exams 1 EC paper. Exams are basically like questions you'd find on the GRE. You must not only understand what terms mean but understand how they apply to life. Great class. You will walk out of that class feeling like a social psych expert! If u show Hymes you are trying he will give u the grade u earn

Dr. Hymes can be pretty intimidating at first, but he is one of the best professors I have ever had. No powerpoint or writing on the board, but very knowledgeable about the subject. Pay attention and take good notes especially on past experiments. I had a lot of fun in the class and plan to take more classes with him.

Dr. Hymes is a great guy. I took my methods course with him (Lab in Social Psych) after having him for social psych and loving the class. The class was challenging, but he was always willing to help. He promptly answered my e-mails whenever I had questions. The studies done were interesting. He makes sure you understand the material.

The worst thing about Dr. Hymes is that he doesn't teach enough courses at UMD, so at most you can take four classes with him. Seriously, he's a great lecturer who really cares about students' thoughts and encourages discussion. You'll have to do some reading and studying on your own, but that's college. Definitely one of my favorite professors!

I loved Hymes! One of the best lecturers I have ever listened to. The only downside is that he only grades a midterm, final, and a paper. Tests are a little tough, but lectures are definitely enjoyable to listen to!

Took this class years ago, but never got the chance to post my review here. I started my psych undergrad at UM-D before transferring to UM-AA to finish my degree. Dr. Hymes was easily one of the best 2-3 lecturers I'd had during my time in undergrad. TAKE HIM. Not easy, but he's passionate about the material. Social psych is best psych!

Best professor at UMD. Have also taken PSYC 320 (social) and PSYC 425(social psyc. research methods. Very passionate about issues involving racial/ethnic inequality and injustice. Intimidating, but extremely sweet and caring if you meet with him during office hours.

Dr.Hymes is a professor that no matter your major, you will enjoy taking. He is extremely passionate towards what he does and it reflects upon his lectures. Come to class with a pen and paper and be prepared to take notes. DO NOT miss class. His examples are important for your A. Not an easy A blow off class. Come to class and read your text.

One of the best instructors I've ever had. He makes the material very enjoyable and has a way of teaching that makes key points stick in your mind so you don't easily forget. I can't say enough good things about prof. Hymes. Just show up and study for the exams. Also gives 2 extra credit opportunities, one of which is huge. B+ becomes A- if done.

Show up to class, take decent notes, read the book or at least know the main concepts from the chapters and vocab and you should do great. He gives 3 exams and a paper. Pretty easy, also gives a review sheet before every exam and tells you the essay question. It is impossible to fail if you try.

I haven't even gotten my grade in this class but let me tell you.. GREAT PROFESSOR! You absolutely have to show up and take notes because his exams are 70% lecture and 30% textbook. Good thing is, class is never boring and the man has a great sense of humor. Plus, participating is actually fun. No, its not an easy A but we're in college people.

He is very passionate about the subject that he teaches, and he is very clear in what he expects. You also need to read the book! I would've done better if I had!

Hymes is WAY too over-hyped. Everyone that's taken him acts like he's a god among men, but he's just average. 25% of lecture time is him talking about 2-3 topics and 75% is him telling jokes/personal stories, but you need to go for the minute details. Most of my learning came from the book, which you NEED to get an A. Study guides are useless.

Best decision ever. There are 3 exams (no final) and online discussions. The online discussions are super easy. The exams are straight forward. Besides the week before the exam where i was rereading my notes, i basically did not do anything outside of the class. I would recommend this class 100% plus hes pretty interesting.

Definition section (easy), Essay section (he tells you before hand but there's ALWAYS a curveball added), Multiple choice (minute details taken from lecture and book that can be easily glossed over if you take bad notes). Dr. Hymes is arguably the greatest professor in the psych department. I've taken him twice. His lectures are exciting and he is so knowledgeable and passionate about social psychology. The exams are difficult, but the classes are worth it. Psychology of Prejudice changed my life. Take it if you can!

Professor Hymes is the best psych professor at this campus; no ifs ands or buts. He is the best lecturer and makes learning material so interesting. 3 exams, 1 paper. Prof Hymes is an excellent professor; his class consists of 3 exams and 1 extra credit paper and weekly discussion posts or reaction papers (I think 3); his tests are extremely tricky, so do your book reading and take good notes; you will need them.

Not the best for PSYC Methods. First 3 months were easy as it was behind schedule. The last month everyone wanted to have a mental breakdown as the class then got rushed. Graded on 3 (meant to be 4, but we ran out of time) papers and 2 ridiculous exams. Final paper ended up being about 65% of our grades as we didn't do paper 4. Take PSYC465 instead

Professor Hymes is a little rough around the edges but once you get to know him, he is a really nice guy. I looked forward to his lectures every class because he is so engaging and makes the material come alive. He loves social psychology and his passion will rub off on you too! There's not much on the homework front, just a paper, and 3 exams.

I absolutely loved Professor Hymes. Only 3 tests and then 1 final paper. Attendance isn't mandatory but the exams are 75% of the lecture material. He does use book material for tests as well. Very intelligent and very interesting lectures. I learned a lot in this course and already signed up for another one with Professor Hymes.

He gives you 4 essays upfront from which he'll choose two to put on exam. Do the essays early. He gives study guides and is an understanding prof. Attend class and do readings, and you'll be fine.

Im seeing all these bad reviews and Im honestly confused. I took every class he had to offer(all 3). Honestly, it wasnt a great start. First week I HATED him because of the way he calls students out (myself included), I almost dropped the class. But I decided to stay and glad I did. He turned out to be one of my favorite professors of all time!

Taken during the pandemic so it was online. Asynchronous course with optional zoom meetings that he records and puts to canvas. 8 discussions, lowest 3 dropped. 4 exams, extra credit option at the end. Study guides specify what material comes from the lectures and what comes from the text. I appreciated the class and would take him again.

Dr. Hymes was literally the best professor I've taken at UMD. He has 3 exams and 5 discussions that he grades. If you watch the lectures and take good notes, you'll pass his class with an A. He also gives review sheets for every exam. I would recommend, however, I would also include that you have to work for your grade and study.

The lectures were very captivating. He does a really good job explaining the material. There are only 3 exams, 1 paper, and 3 e.c. discussions. The tests are hard, but if you pay attention, take detailed notes, and understand all the study guide vocab you should be fine. Genuinely one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken.

Lectures were very engaging and interesting, but he got very behind in the first two months and it sort of impacted the rest of the semester (we had to learn 4 chapters in the last 3 classes). Tests are challenging, but not impossible; make sure to study and give *very* clear written answers (this applies to the paper as well).

overall the professor is a really nice person, he is organized in his lectures and he is always open to doubts. he does get a little side-tracked within the classes but it keeps us all engaged as well. he wouldn't emphasize in class how important it is to refer to the book, but if you want a good grade, keep reading the textbook chapters.

Professor Hymes is a good professor but can get a bit tough. He is very passionate about psychology and lectures pretty heavily as well. His class didn't have many assignments, which is good. Weekly discussion board and responding to two classmates and 3 overall tests. His tests are pretty darn hard and two essay questions per exam which are hard.

Dr. Hymes is the most funny and energetic professor I've had in my academic career. For first, he graded the discussions very fairly and left such nice comments. Secondly, he offered an extra credit opportunity. Just make sure to study hard for exams! They are very detailed, so take detailed notes and skim the textbook. Definitely recommend him!

My first impression of hymes was that he was a funny guy, never a dull moment in his class. The atmosphere that we created in that classroom was one with good vibes. His lectures are very immersive. Though attendance was optional, I'd always attend class for the experience. Exams and paper are medium difficulty. Would love to take him again.

Professor Hymes was by far the best professor I've had at UM-Dearborn, but that's not to say that this class wasn't the hardest one I've taken so far. The papers are hard, he grades tough, but his lectures and great feedback make up for it. You really shouldn't get anything lower than a B- in this class.
