Thank god we had a textbook.
Wowow, hard exams, a lot of HARD hwk, make things complicated
hard to understand his note, but easy exams
Must download his course notes
No Comments
it took WAAAY too much work to get an A in this class
boring, messy notes, makes easy things complicated
nice prof, yet not so clear in lectures, but very easy exams.
nice guy...but won't understand his notes at all. Easy exams though!
Way too much work on what could have been an easy course, tests marked too hard
Horrible lectures, very unclear, easy midterms/finals, helps students
Let him make every math exam plz
This guy's final was easy, but midterm was hard. Lectures confusing as hell
I can never understand what he is saying, and I don't think he does either.
Lectures are confusing cuz he is so fine!!!
His lecture is very confusing. In fact, the textbook explains his notes.
Frequently hard to understand, not just because of his accent but also because of the way he tries to explain himself.
Tends to talk to the chalkboard. VERY into math but not very clear on what he wants to explain. Tends to explain by saying it just is . Very nice and considerate but boring.

His lectures are very confusing. And he seems to not quite know the material himself for this course. Once, he was doing a problem on the board and he had to save it for next time because he wasn't sure if he did it right...
I Love prof Israel...He's been like a father to me! Great all round guy! Did you know he scored almost perfect on his SATs and went to Princeton with a full ride scholarship! This man's a genious!
Awesome Prof!
Class was boring..ZzZz... he talked to the chalkboard more than he talked to the students. When he explains, its like he himself doesn't know what he's saying. I'll never take a class with him EVER again. :(
no people skills whatsoever
The most boring Math prof at UBC. Lectures are boring beyond all recognition. Exams and homeworks are very hard. Don't take 316 with him unless you have taken 215 with him before, and there is no better option available.
notes and homework have nothing in common
Not bad, boring but helpful if you need homework help or anything.
if ever there is an award for the most boring, monotonous voice that reads directly from a textbook and stutters and mumbles his way though a course, well then congratulations dr israel.
i juss feel bad for him... he's an ok prof... he's the prof u go to, when want easy
The most boring prof ever! Seems like he doesn't care if anybody in class is still awake. Don't recommend him to anybody 'cause he will make you lose interest in math.
First midterm was easy, gave us all high hopes... second midterm though... he means it when he says HARD!! Very stuttery, very boring, very slow. If you want to learn math and not focus on gr.12 basics, choose a different prof!
i like him so much, he is the most patient teacher i've ever met in university. he hleps me whenever i am in trouble, i really don't know how to thank his kindness. but probably just sincerely say thanks to him here.
omg...i knew more about the course before i took it
Nice man, but sorry excuse for a teacher. Cannot answer questions effectively, teaches from examples in another professor's notes, and assigns lots of difficult homework. Watch out for the second midterm! Mumbles and can't control class behavior.
it's his first class and he already SUCKED!!!!!
oi oi oi...boring, mumbly, writing resembles a heart monitor, HARD second midterm...if you have problems sleeping, here's a cure
worst prof ever. doesn't care if the class is listening or understanding. doesn't care if we learn -will keep lecturing afer the bell and as people are leaving! Can't answer questions if his life depended on it.
huh? this guy teaches math? what would u say to a prof who explains how to "complete the square" when we alrdy know it? if i didn't fall asleep in class so much i'd tell him a thing or two
No Comments
A little unclear at times but a very fair marker! HE SCALES!!! I went in the final with a C+ and came out with an A! Midterms are a killer but that is because he wants to prep you for the final~
try to avoid this guy, u have to spend couple hours on the hw and the mt is not easy. O shot, final is even more worst
horrible
notes are useless, since he just repeats the text verbatim. Springs a hard, unfair 2nd midterm. 1st one usually gives a false sense of security. Final is hardER. math 103 is hard course in general, avoid it if possible!
Good, nice prof. Could improve speaking ability to an audience. Puts relevant notes up on web. Good tests, and overall good prof.

boring. boring. boring. can't explain or keep u awake. take it only if u are an insomniac
the worse math prof i ve ever seen...but he's a nice guy...just can't teach
very nice prof. he's so adorable! (in that mumbly sense) just needs to be more confident. class notes were helpful, but sometimes unrelated to homework.
I took this class with an interest in Linear programming, Israel killed it for me.
You can't hear him he mumbles!!! he said in class that 99% of the lecture is in the notes that you can get online! WTF! if you take this course with him you are basically self-learning it
had him for about a week b4 switching out to math 100... u can't hear this guy and on top of that he's so lazy that he just uses some other prof's notes. apparently has a reputation of being the worst math 102 prof
one of the worst ones. mumbles too much. doesn't even know what he is doing.
Crazy looking dude, crazy talking dude but hey, it IS math afterall....
I hated every single second I spent in this class. If you have never taken calculus before DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. He has worthless notes some other prof wrote and he writes them on the overhead, so there is no point in coming to class.
I have zero respect for him as a professor. He is extremely unhelpful even though I went to talk to him during his office hours, he uses another professor's notes and writes them on the board. He should not be teaching.
Very boring. Might as well learn the material at home and watch a movie during class. It'd be more productive that way.
The most ineffective professor I've ever seen. The lectures are awful, so I went to his office for extra help. Very unhelpful. Take the other 102 section.
OMG, he is worse then what I thought would be the worst possible,he mumbles so much...and i learn nothing from him. good luck if you ever get him...you will need it.
OMG... I have him in math 103 again.. im thinking to drop... I liked math when i was in high school.. but now..my worst subject
If you're going to take his class, make sure you know your stuff. You'll only do well in his class if you did well in grade 12 calculus and have good notes to fall back on because his notes are pretty much useless.
Sitting at home banging my head against a wall would have been better for me. Would have killed fewer brain cells at least. He is very intimidating to talk to as he often misinterprets questions and has a condescending attitude when answering any. His notes are just a messy copy of the online ones.
Lectures were a waste of time since they're exactly like the notes but still a good prof since he only gave 2 midterms unlike the others who gave upto 4. The lectures were boring only cuz we've learned the majority of the material in high school; the prof isnt to blame for thisas the others say.
Horrible teacher. Can't teach, the only way people do well is if they have taken calc in gr. 12. If you have not taken calc (and done well) you will fail miserably. Text(online) is unorganized/useless, Lectures pointless (reads text out loud). He'll never help you outside of class. Horrible person.
He's a jerk, who the hell reads off of another teacher's note pkg as notes. He cannot speak a sentence w/o pausing and often has side conversations with himself. ABOVE ALL...he cant teach SAVE YOURSELF!!!
He gave out really easy mid-terms and easy pratice finals which give a false sense. On the final, it's where your ability got tested. Lecture is pretty useless, since it's the same as the notes, but read aloud. When ask for help by mail, always says so and so is not your concern, just do your work.
OMG his sentences were so fragmented that I forgot what he was talking about after he finished his sentence. Impossible to stay awake during lectures. Hope his midterms and final are fair!
I actually like him. Not bad at all. Very approachable. But his teaching is not very clear.
ubc and good teachers? together? "unpossible!" he bluntly said to some girl who went to get help from him, "you need a tutor." THANKS FOR THE HELP ROBERT. why does he just read off keseht notes? can't he make his own? crikey, i could teach this course if i just read off keseht notes.

He's a horrible professor. If you can get into Keshet's class for Math 103, DO IT! He doesn't know how to teach and his midterms are horrible. Each question is worth 10 points and if you get the answer wrong, it's unlikely that you'll get anything above 6 for that question. Switch into Keshet's clas
worst prof u can EVER get in a math course! >< avoid at ALL COST!!!
I felt sorry for him...just a very lousy prof. He just reads off the notes, is a terrible public speaker and very nervous in class, and his midterms were too easy, so everyone got scaled and screwed on the final.
if u have him right now and can't switch out to another section I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU!!!

Worst. Class. Ever.
Need I say more? Everyone has described just about everything about Dr. Israel. Regret that i didn't switch to Kechet's class. MUST AVOID.
He's the only professor that has put me to sleep thus far of my academic career.
I got 8% in differential calc. II. I wasn't getting it, and he just didn't have the time to help me... so I quit trying.
If you took highschool calc, you don't even need to study to get a decent mark in his class, otherwise, it will be hard
Hard to stay focused in class because he mumbles a lot and seems to be talking only to himself. Reads completely off the course notes. Found him to be somewhat approachable outside of class, however. Try to avoid if possible. Midterms were fair but harder final.
yikes, lets just say the only meaningful relationship he can establish is only with his graphing calculator--totally anti-social. Skipped the last month of class--no need to go b/c he reads word for word from notes. If you ask a question in class his response is, "isn't it obvious?" The only thing that is obvious is his lacking teaching ability.
i don't know what i should comment on him after i saw this whole page negative comments...havn't seen him for a year or two...miss his smile and mostly, patience...maybe he doesn't really like students in my (wordy) type...but i still appreciate all his help in my first year...hope to be in his class some day again...
Great Prof!
Decent professor if you've taken Calculus before in high school. I have him for math102, pretty easy-going guy. If you know your stuff, dont go to lectures, instead email him for homework or test clarification. He seems to explain better through emails
SHOULD HAvE DROP THE CLAsS WHEN I STILL HAd tHE CHANCe

he's an ideal example of YOU CAN IGNORE TEXTBOOK guy, if he doesn't like the methods used in textbook, then he will not use them;however, most of his methods are better which is good...his lectures may first seem boring and really put u into sleep but once u realized that if u got his lectures, u pretty much got the whole course, he will be OK.
His lectures often made me more confused than clear and his teaching style is not very interesting. But, he seems to know his material well but just didn't present it in an easy to understand way. However, all his class notes can be purchased or printed off from online pdf files so at least you don't have to worry about copying down notes in-class!
if you have a hard time sleeping, go to his class because for some weird reason his voice is like a lullaby and he will put you right to sleep. guaranteed.

In Math 210 Dr. Israel pushed the envelope with 4th Year and Graduate Concepts. Very Hard material to grasp and initially the grades were very low. After the final and Scaling the Grades reflected the amount of effort you put into the course. Very Smart teacher, difficult teaching style.
Going to this lecture made me depressed. He was a very nice guy but read the online notes word for word and spoke in monotone the whole time. Everyone pretty much ignored him and just talked amongst themselves. Quite helpful through email.
HORRID teacher! he just stood at the front of the room and mumbled under his breath while writing on the board and definitely lost track of his own thoughts numerous times per lecture! He seems nice, but hes just not a goood teacher, try to avoid him. tests were hard!
I agree with the last posting. I think Dr. Israel is brilliant, but he just cannot teach. He faces the board and mumbles and forgets what he was saying until the class ends up leaving (some decide to leave halfway through). I don't know anyone who really understands him.
He just reads the online notes... tests are hard
He's a nice guy, however his teaching style is ridiculous. His lectures are useless. He does half proofs, useless examples, and basically reads off the textbook. Homework is ok, midterms were ok as well. Final was very long, and hard.
Nice Guy. Horrible teaching, just rewrites all the online notes on the board again. I didn't go to any classes after the midterm and still found the final pretty easy.
Professor Israel is a very smart teacher, however, he doesn't really interact with his students. He just teaches and talks to the board most of the time. And because most of the time he doesn't throughout explains step by step how he arrived to an answer, students do not know how to question him when he expects us to. Midterms were hard as well.
Ugh.. this guy is just terrible. he CANNOT teach AT ALL. the midterms are bad too... only a couple questions per exam; not good! get one little thing wrong and there goes your mark down the drain.
if i hadn't taken calc in highschool, i would've failed this class. i don't like israel, his notes are bad, he doesn't explain things properly, he goes off on a tangent, and when i asked him why i got 60% on a lab because i didn't write one of the equations for one of the curves, he replied "well, that's not my problem".
Basically, I think most would agree that showing up to his lectures are not essential to doing well in the course. For instance, there's at least 40 of us enrolled but at any given day, maybe only 8-10 would show up. But I think going to the lab hours are CRITICAL as that's the only you could get his help on doing the tough homework problems.
Not a good professor, lectures were basically him reading off the online notes. Very unclear teaching.
I walked into his first lecture and he said admitted that he was not a good lecturer and the only things students will get out of his lectures are clarifications on homework problem. He was right, lectures are not at all helpful and he has no confidence in his teaching abilities (and rightly so). He is extremely boring and teaches to himself.

vey useless lectures. in a world of his own most of the time. go to the labs every time but truthfully no point in going to lectures.
OK all in all, this guy can't really teach, mumbles and stuff. I think he really knows his stuff but like I said, CAN'T TEACH. I feel so bad for him, he's obviously not comfortable lecturing, and students just leave class in the middle of lectures. Poor guy, not a mean teacher, just needs to work on oral skills.
Such a great prof!
midterms are pretty easy
Boring lecture. Cant really teach.
math 303 is hard course itself and he made things even HARDER. He gives homework even if we have a midterm the same week. final was BRUTAL...A KILLER....it was unfair cuz he never taugh it in class and the questions were NOTHING like homework/practice that we did
Midterms are easy but his lecture can be extremely confusing at times. Take his section for the midterms and go to another section for lecture.
Horrible professor! Homework assignments were difficult to keep up with because there was one every week (literally!). Midterms were do-able. Final was absolutely nothing like the midterms or the homework questions! This course is not easy by any means - do not take it with him if you have the choice!
One of the worst professors I've had in my four years at UBC. If you have the choice, DO NOT take a course with Professor Israel! Midterms were fair, but the final exam was far from fair - everyone thought their marks went down the drain after writing the brutal final! The short answer is to stay away from Israel's class if you can!
so so so so what a *** prof.
If you want to have a class to sleep in, this is the one. Actually, just hand in homework and go home to sleep. Boring lecture, doesn't help much
Yikes. That's all I have to say.
While Mr. Israel was nice, I could not understand any concepts in his class. I ended up just re-reading Dr. Keshet's notes to learn. I do believe he is smart and knows his subject, I just don't think that he can teach very well.
nice guy but not a great lecturer. course contains extremely difficult concept, yet exmas (2midterms+final) was not that bad. assignments are annoying though.
if you are a math major student, you will have him one day. be aware. but he's a nice man.
Dr. Israel has trouble translating his knowledge from ideas to words that are comprehensible for students to learn. You would probably get more done just reading from the textbook on your own.
most useless lectures ever. talks to the board so that you can't hear him. Takes forever to explain very basic concepts, and even then, doesn't really make sense or help you understand. To make things worse, he gives assignments every week, which can be challenging because you don't learn anything from his lectures.
Absolutely useless lectures...Did not understand him AT ALL, even if you try your absolute best.. you'd be going home with ??? everytime
transfer out. now. I used to enjoy math before having him as a professor. He's a nice man but does NOT know how to lecture. Though he is a highly educated and knowledgeable man - none of that matters to me when I don't understand his teaching!:(
I enjoyed and understood this subject before going into his class. He managed to confuse me on topics that I already knew how to do very well. If you didn't take calc in high school and have those notes to refer back to, you're in huge trouble. My nightmare course
Most useless lectures ever! no point in going. he will just make you confused about topics you already understood! Avoid him at all costs!
Worst professor I've ever had at UBC. He didn't explain concepts he just did examples all class and didn't explain how he did them. And when I tried to set up an appointment because I couldn't make his office hours he completely ignored all my attempts to contact him.
Best professor I had at UBC for a math course I took. Always grade homework assignments I worked on my own and was able to slip it through the crack of his office door. Sadly failed to defend him while I firmly and calmly told a male Caucasian student in his class to "Please keep quiet" who terrorised not only the instructor but the whole class.
His lectures are fun and everything he teaches is in the books and exams, I have taken two classes with him, he is also very respectful and caring with students. He knows a lot base on his career, and if you do what he says you get a good grade! Amazing professor :) 100%
