Great professor, highly recommend taking his courses if you are interested in political science.
Awesome lectures, full of knowledge, crystal clear lectures. All political science majors must take him. All around pleasant man.
I had him for the American Presidency and he is an excellent professor. Very genial and excellent informative lectures. The best part was how he used SNL skits to teach us about modern presidents.
Very intelligent, well-versed professor who is very clear and understandable. Unlike others, he does not lean to either side of the political spectrum and is very objectional. Overall, very nice and intelligent man.
Gotta love Bobby J. He's probably my favorite professor @ FSU. He's very knowledgeable about the subject matter and doesn't just rely on lectures and powerpoint to teach. Be prepared to watch some SNL skits and laugh like crazy. If you can, take him, you'll be glad you did.
No way an intro course should be this hard, tests do not reflect study guide, 10 question quizzes on 150 pages of reading. Power points are not clear, boring lectures.
I wouldn't take again. I studied and will end up with B. He puts bogus questions on the tests from slides he said we didnt have to write down and weren't on the study guide. (i.e. How many African Americans are in the Senate?) Plus, the lectures are very boring and he doesn't post his Power Points online. Wish I would have taken someone else!!!!
Very nice guy, always willing to help, but way too difficult to be an intro course. There is a very heavy amount of reading that will never ever be important to me in my life, and I just couldnt get interested. But Mr. Jackson personally is a great guy, just difficult.
I agree with the last 3 posts...his tests are hard as**** even if you study, the 10 question quizzes cover 150 pages of reading, the slides are not online, hes boring...basically, I would never take him as a teacher again...oh, in my 2 years here, hardest intro course ever...
Good professor, mostly interesting lectures though on occasion monotomous. Extremely friendly and helpful to students in and out of class. Tests were fairly difficult and hinged on questions of great detail. Shows funny video clips some days. Basically a cool class with tough tests.
The man is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. If you want to major in this subject area, I highly recommend him because you will get the most in depth intro course available. I learned alot, the readings for this course must be done or you will get a poor grade.
worthwhile and very interesting
Great professor, very approachable, and incredibly knowledgeable. Doing the readings is extremely important.
extremely helpful. quizzes were difficult and covered too much reading but he offers a sub-assignment to make up for it. the class is interesting and he makes lectures interesting with examples. great intro course
i took him for an honors seminar and he was great. the class wasn't really easy (the multiple choice on his tests were a little tough), but it wasn't anything too difficult, and he's fair. most of the assignments were writing. we didn't have a text book, but he gave us interesting books to read. i want to take another class with him soon.
Took him for Voting Behavior & Elections. Fantastic professor. Keeps things interesting by relating class material to current events. Even cracks the occasional dry joke. I would take him again in a heartbeat.
definitely one of the better professors in the poli sci department. make sure you read for the quizzes. he specifically tells you what you need to study for the tests, and sometimes puts up funny political cartoons before class, which is pretty cool.
The tests are hard, but its not impossible to make an A. He does use information not in class lectures on them, but most teachers do. The quizzes are hard and cover about 150 pages and he will ask 10 questions but you get to drop the two lowest. If you read you can make at least a B in his class.
Hmm what to say, this class was extremely tedious. You HAVE to read the assignments and they are in excess of 100 pages each. The quizzes are pretty specific, so you can't just skim the readings. He is kind of just a bleh kind of guy. Not really funny, but then again it is politics.
Bob Jackson is intelligent guy and knows the material very well. His class is challenging and his quizzes require a lot of reading(sometimes 150 pages for a 10 question multiple choice test) The tests are from the notes and he gives you a well laid out study guide which covers every question of the exam. He lets you replace a test with an essay.
This professor knows his stuff! He is hard-working and class discussion was enjoyable. I learned a lot from the class and textbook used, suplemented by his great teaching.
Voting Behaviors...great instructor...one of the best classes I took at fsu. There is a ton of reading but the material is extremely interesting. Tests are multiple choice, short id, and essay..papers are graded pretty liberally. Would take again...
Political Science is this guys LIFE. Don't suggest him if he's teaching an intro. He is extremely intelligent and knows his stuff, but treats intro classes as if they're make or break your major. A lot of reading, comprehensive as well as literal questions on the tests and quizzes (both hard)...Again, would not suggest him for an intro class!
He's a nice guy. The amount of reading can be intimidating, but it wasn't too bad because I spaced it out through my weeks. He's current on his topics and shows a few relevant videos. Notetaking can prevent focusing on lectures, but his tests are pretty straight from the notes. Not the toughest paper grader in the world either. I enjoyed his class.
He is the nicest guy you will ever meet. There are three tests, each covering mostly his class lectures so you must attend class and take notes to do well. 6 Quizes are given out and two are dropped but research paper is optional to fix a bad test or your overall quiz grade. Very easy class just read and attend class and you'll do fine.
Very knowledgeable, very nice guy. Assigns a lot of reading for each class, but usually goes over it before exams and highlights key points. Two papers are graded very fairly. He's always available to answer questions. Nice guy, interesting class..I say take it.
Great professor. Really knows what he is talking about. If you go to class and do the readings it is an easy class.
One of the best professors at I've ever had. Class challenges you to learn, but is done fairly and is very enjoyable if you have any interest in the subject. He doesn't just lecture but allows a lot of class discussion which can be fun. I highly recommend him.
Bob Jackson is by far the best professor I've had--very smart, very nice, and very available for help. Yes, he does assign a fair bit of reading, but I couldn't put most of them down.
Not hard but so boring. Made it difficult to show up. Coming to class was not mandatory but he didn't put slides online.
Take American Presidency! If you (1) go to class and (2) do the readings, you'll get an A/high B. Class tends to be a little boring, but Jackson is smart and knows his stuff. It's not an "easy A" but if you are willing to put the work into it, it's definitely possible.
Took Voting, Campaigns and Elections with him and he is ok. Assigns 3 Tests and a paper plus lots of reading. Some of the tests feel like trivial pursuit--he asked what year the first political ad was produced in, for example. Other than that however he is very nice, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. You can do ok just by attending class, I got A-
I took him for Voting/Campaigns/Election and he was a good instructor. His class involves lots of (boring) readings that will show up on the multiple-choice portion of his test. His exceptions for responses on the Identification and Essay portion of his tests are too high, expecting students to know every detail of the term/subject.
Bob Jackson is great. His lectures are usually interesting and funny and he's a super nice guy. Exams can be a little touch (impossible if you don't go to class) but he is a lenient grader. Going to class and studying, a B+ to an A should be easy
The tests are essay style. A lot of the test questions and prompts come right from the notes. The readings are impossibly long. The third exam is also much harder than the first two. Study and read and an A-/A should not be too difficult to get.
Great professor. Super understanding and willing to make accomodations as far as deadlines. I only got a C because I forgot to do 3/5 quizzes because I'm a horrible student but tests are mostly what he covers in class but you will have to read chapters to get higher than a C on tests. American gov isn't interesting but he makes it bareable
He is a very good professor, he is very helpful and accommodating. He brings in data and examples relevant and current. I enjoyed the class very much!
Dr. Jackson knows so much about the modern presidency. His tests are not hard, and the class is just 3 tests and a couple of HW assignments. Super interesting, and very engaging. Definitely take him if you're poli sci
Dr. Jackson is highly knowledgeable. He presents material in a manner that is articulate, if occasionally long-winded. I recommend him to serious political science students who don't mind occasionally looking at data. Three tests (80%), one term paper (15%), and participation (5%) comprise his grades. I suggest consistently attending class.
Great guy, very knowledgeable. Go to Office Hours!
Jackson isn't the easiest prof, but he knows his stuff and that's clear. His lectures are kind of boring but he gets his point across. He doesn't post the majority of his notes so you need to go to class. The book is helpful.
Lectures are a little boring but he doesn't post them so attendance is a must. The test material comes from lectures AND the textbook so that is a must too. He is clearly very passionate about what he teaches and for me made the material more enjoyable. The tests and quizzes are not very hard if you study and do the readings. Overall I enjoyed it.
Professor Jackson was one of the better professors I've had and made the lectures as interesting as possible. Attendance isn't mandatory but the slides aren't posted so if you want an A/B you need to go to class and take notes. I studied for each test for 6-8 hours and received 80, 82, & 83 to end up w a B in the class. I would recommend him.
I had him twice and he is very passionate and fair. Personally I did not go to class or his office hours often and I'm struggling to pass, but he was really boring. Some classes are so easy you can fail, do not make the same mistakes.
Jackson is an amazing professor who is seems very passionate about the subject. His lectures are straight forward and he answers questions very thoughtfully; if you are interested in American government you will enjoy the class. Multiple quizzes and 3 exams. I didn't purchase the textbook and got a good grade, it just took more outside studying.
I loved this class and professor. A lot of people didn't do well, because they didn't pay attention or go to class. I really enjoyed the lectures and learned a lot and he tries to make it interesting and relevant . The quizzes were the hardest part and their worth 20% of your grade but he gave 6 extra points to help!
Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't want to go every day make sure you read the textbook and show up every once in a while to stay on track. Textbook is a must, his study guides aren't that great so do it yourself. Some people think he's boring but he has a good sense of humor and is overall great at explaining things if you pay attention.
I really enjoyed Prof. Jackson's class. He was heavy on the lectures but he would post them after class so you could re-read. He'd also post fun videos with the lectures. We had a few short quizzes and you MUST READ the textbook/essay he provides. Absolutely DO NOT fall asleep in class or leave early because he will call you out.
Read the Quiz readings thoroughly or you will not do well. The exams require studying for. If you don't you will not do very well. You need to read/skim the textbook for the exams
This class is graded on very few things for an introductory course: 3 Unit Exams, 4 Reading Quizzes, and 1 Data Analysis Quiz. Never checks attendance, but has some extra credit assignments through the year if you go to class. Classes and tests were VERY lecture heavy. Jackson claims the textbook is required, but I never used much of it. Mediocre.
He is a great professor, if you show up and play attention you will be fine.
This class was terrible! The lectures were boring and long. The quizzes were pretty easy but the tests were hard. 3 test and 4 quizzes. make sure you pass all the quizzes and read the book!
One of my favorite classes I took all semester. Attendance is not really mandatory but he does not post his slides and every now and then there is an in-class assignment. I loved going to class because he really knew the subject and always loved to discuss matters relating to the executive branch.
Really nice guy who wants everyone to learn and do well. Go to office hours! He really knows what he's talking about, and I'd take another class with him. It's not easy per se, but if you put minimal effort you should do fine.
Read all of the readings for the quizzes or you won't do well. Only 5 reading quizzes, one is dropped. Tests are hard if you don't thoroughly read the textbook. Attendance is not mandatory but if you don't go you will miss a ton of information that isn't in the book but is on the test. 3 exams no extra credit.
Go to class, the notes aren't always posted and extra credit points are randomly offered and they help so much (add points to final grade percentage). You HAVE to read and understand the articles for the quizzes in order to do good on them. For the exams, outline the textbook's chapters and do the practice quizzes on the textbook's website.
Do not skip this class!!! Go to the lectures and read the textbook and you'll be fine. Only 3 homework assignments for the whole semester.
Prof Jackson can be a bit boring but he is a chill guy. 90% of the grade is based on exams however if you are not doing well by the mid of the class you can do an optional paper which lowers the weight of the participation grade and your lowest test. All of his tests are 2 days long and have M.C and 3 short responses then a full essay.
Would take again!! The subject is SO interesting, he always has funny cartoons, good lectures. I had a pretty brutal work schedule so i skipped a couple classes, fine sporadically but go regularly- he tests on stuff only in lectures, plus you're missing out!!! Tests are kinda challenging, but read the TB and readings and go to class and it's an A
The lectures are really boring but you have to go because the powerpoints aren't uploaded. The tests are very specific so you have to know the random examples he goes over in class, other than that its a good prof for a gen ed!
Jackson is actually my favorite professor as of yet, his lectures are super interesting and he always makes sure to explain multiple perspectives on different topics. He also has a bit of humor that he lets through sometimes if you pay attention. I am definitely going to take another class with him!
One of my favorite political science professors at FSU. For a lecture class, his powerpoints were really informative and engaging. Clear grading and syllabus.
Prof Jackson was refreshingly objective and tending to both sides of the aisle. Class was easy, as long as you put forth an effort. Weekly Quizzes are based off the powerpoint slides, which were pretty engaging and informative, and textbook material. Plenty of extra credit chances, as well.
Overall, I liked this class. His class is really based on weekly quizzes, which came from the lectures he posted. Sometimes there was a lot to study for the week, but it was manageable. He explains the material pretty clearly. Most likely will take another class with him.
Lectures are pretty short and easy to follow, you dont really have to do the readings to pass the class, weekly quizzes but only 15 questions, gives extra credit opportunities throughout the semester, drops the 2 lowest quiz scores, and theres no final or midterms.
Online format, all he did was upload lectures with slides and then have a quiz on the topic every Friday. There is a textbook with the course but if you pay attention to the slides and lecture theres no point in paying for it. He provides extra credit opportunities that goes towards your overall quiz grades which are fairly easy. Do stuff on time.
Make sure you read the announcements he posts because the work required layout is not in the syllabus. I really like the lectures because he shows both sides of the party system and doesn't really bring his beliefs into it. Also, read the textbook to study, aswell, because not everything is in lectures that you need for exams.
Prof. Jackson is very straightforward and perfect if you do not like political science and are taking it for a graduation requirement. open notes quizzes every week which consist of 15 questions and the lecture and his teaching style are very informative and easy to follow if you just watch the videos you should pass with an A.
There isn't any homework but there are tests every Friday and they are really hard. There isn't much time to complete them and I never got higher than an A on them. For an introduction course, it definitely did not feel like one.
professor Jackson is a great professor to take to fill some political science credit. The class and course material are very straightforward and has very little work. The lectures are prerecorded so you can watch them at any time. There are quizzes once a week in which they are open note. He provides extra credit and drops the two lowest quizes
Super clear about what he expects. If you read and listen to lectures, you will do great. Professor is always available for office hours
Weekly tests but most answers are online if you don't listen to the videos. Easy to follow course. All that's required are those weekly tests, but they aren't long and a few zoom discussions but they accommodate if you can't speak and would rather use the chat.
Multiple long boring lectures each week. Tests didnt include anything in the weekly lessons.
Lectures are long and weekly quizzes on those lectures are what matter most. Responses via email are short and do not clarify specific questions you may have during the course.
Professor obviously really enjoys the content of the course, and I did actually have interesting convos with him during class, so I enjoyed that part since I find the material interesting as well. Class consists of about 5 tests, some tiny assignments. He gives study guides that help a lot. So just make sure to study the materials he gives you
In general, it wasn't hard, every week you watch the videos and then take a quiz. However, some of the questions are vague or reference something specific in the 100-page textbook chapter from that week, so just be prepared for that. We did three zoom discussions, they were very easy, just participate a little. There are extra credit opportunities.
Jackson is my favorite professor at FSU! I thought this class was so interesting and he does his best to keep the lectures entertaining! Grade is 2 small assignments & 5 exams (3 written and 2 multiple choice). For the written exams he gives a great study guide that if you really use, will get you a good grade. I wish he was teaching more classes!
By far one of the best professors I have had at FSU. Very intriguing and knowledgeable.
Professor Jackson is very nice and will help if you ask for it. But, his lectures are so boring and disengaging. There are 5 tests, of which he grades extremely hard, but he does give a study guide. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it does help if you go to class. I personally wouldn't take a class with him again.
Seems like a nice man but God, his lectures are boring. Also is heavy of reading the textbook. Easiness of tests and quizzes varys from very easy to extremely difficult.
Professor Jackson was extremely knowledgeable and very nice throughout the semester. The class could be challenging at times but was very interesting if you paid attention. The tests were reasonable as long as you study the slides and read the book. The outlines he provides are both helpful and easy to follow for studying, definitely recommend.
Professor Jackson is about as good a professor as one can be. He is incredibly intelligent, personable, and engaging. Obviously, if you're not interested in politics you may be bored by his classes, but if you do enjoy politics, show up to class and participate, you will find any one of Jackson's classes to be great. All around amazing guy!
Great professor. Fairly easy to do well in this class if you pay attention
