he's a good prof. even if you don't always agree with him (and more than likely you won't) he's still a smart guy.
He has interesting ideas and perspectives.
Yes, he will speak of his political views. That's what makes him great. He's not afraid to speak his mind-(freedom of the press...). He taught me a lot about journalism and life. His views may not be your views or my views but he teaches truth.
Jensen is the Platonic form of an Assclown.
one of the best profs i've ever had. he doesn't just teach material, but teaches you how to think
He is an activist, yes, but he keeps it out of the classroom. He doesn't force his view. He presents many views and lets you think it through for yourself. I took this class only as a place-filler b/c I already knew much of the material. But now I understand the reasons behind it. Excellent teacher!
I expected to learn about journalism, not to be indoctrinated in left-wing ideologies. A waste of my time. It's alright to disagree with the war in Iraq but to openly state that you want the insurgents to win in Iraq is traitorious. Look elsewhere for a journalism class.
This guy is one of the worst professors on the face of the planet. Avoid him at all costs.
He made his entire class work on organizing a demonstration against the school, which I thought was way out of line. On top of that, it turned out that the reason behind all of this was so he could get media coverage at the demonstration, which made him look good since it seemed like he had a lot of supporters. So exploitative and opportunistic!!
Yes, he is liberal and yes, he makes his political beliefs known. The people who are crying about this need to grow up and learn that a person can be a great educator and hold different views than you. He teaches the class well and his tests are straightforward. I know hardcore liberals and conservatives who have gotten an A.
He doesn't punish you for disagreeing with, that's true. But his idea of "teaching" is standing and whining about how evil America is, how Jews have caused so many problems for Arabs, and many other things that a journalism professor knows buggerall about.

I don't get people who're offended by him. Maybe he's worse in other classes, but I felt like he gave a decent overview of a boring topic (media law) and was careful to make a disclaimer when saying anything political.
He makes an otherwise boring subject fun by acting ridiculous and yelling a lot. I liked it.
My favorite journalism professor! I usually fall asleep in all my morning classes but I never ever fall asleep in his! Smart guy with different and interesting views on all subject matters.
Nice enough guy, but so liberal he's practically a socialist. He likes to preach (a.k.a. give people something to think about). I fell asleep in the class almost every day, but it was interesting. I just sleep in auditorium classes. His tests are easy if you do the reading and study at all.
His class is easy, so why wouldn't you take it? Forget about his politics, if the tests and writing assignments are easy you shouldn't care so much about what the man's ideologies are. 4 tests, 5 writing assignments, and he drops the lowest of each, so if you do well enough at the start you're done with the class way before finals. EASY stuff!
It's easy to tell which reviewers went to his class and which ones are just angry conservatives who heard that there was a liberal professor in the journalism dept (shocking!). His exams are a cakewalk. Anyone who rated him under a 4 for "easiness" never took his class. If you care more about your grades than a prof's beliefs then take this class.
He is a great teacher and his class is very easy. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and never have I heard him say anything offending or rude! He is a great teacher and his class is easy (he never tries to trick you). So if you want a good grade and a funny professor, take this class!
He is an easy professor. His final is ridiculously easy. The only problem I had with him is that he treats his class like a bunch of high schoolers. Like we're supposed to be impressed that he cusses. A lot of times it seems he's against things just to be against them. And that he learns new things for the sole purpose of arguing them.
Best proffessor ever!
Brilliant. Great speaker.
Jensen is a great professor! I believe that most of the negative reviews about him are from typical Texan Republicans who don't know how to accept an opposing viewpoint. If you're thinking about taking his class, do it! You'll want to wake up early to attend his lectures.
I'm the only one who thinks he's hot? ....Anyway, aside from that, he's brilliant and fascinating. If you have the chance to take a class of his, of course you should-- its an intellectual experience.
Awesome prof. Very funny and smart. Just read the outside material and you'll ace the test.
Jensen is a great teacher! He knows a lot about what he is teaching. His grading scale this semester really messed me up though. I got a 92% and that was a B. His tests are only 20 questions....but the papers are worth a lot more. Just go to class and read and you will be fine!!!
Jensen is wonderful and one of my favorite teachers ever. He teaches issues that are meaningful I think b/c he knows that the majority of his students NEED A CLUE DESPERATELY, and he knows what's going on and wants to share it. He drops the low grades, tests are soo easy, he's laid back, and very funny. HIGHLY RECCOMENDED
This was "intensive writing and editing," but it was neither intensive, nor was it "writing and editing." We did jack. Same in 349T. Jensen's schtick--hyping left politics--is fine for expanding undergrad minds. It was a waste of time and money in grad school, where I came to learn a craft. Politically, I mostly agree, but he's stuck in the '70.
Great teacher. Holds interest level. Socialist? cool. whatever. liberal? awesome. vegetarian? hell yes. tells you what you NEED TO KNOW and makes law and ethics into something interesting. easy A without much effort, especially if attend lectures.
His class is interesting for the most part, and he opens your mind to topics most people are unaware of. Tests are simple, and the writing assignments are fairly easy. The only problem I had with him is when you ask him a question, he will make you feel like the dumbest person on earth.
Easiest class on the planet. Literally. Just Read the books and infer answers to test questions based on his socialist tendencies.
Jensen's class is the best I've ever taken. He will open your mind to reality, and make you more aware of yours, and your country's impact on the world. Jensen encourages students to be a part of the solution instead of the problem. AND, the tests are dead easy.
Brilliant mind, intensely engaging and just plain fun to be in class with. Truly one of the best on campus. Class is easy if you know the material, but the best part is simply getting to know Jensen.
He is crazy but, I love it! He is super funny and loves his job. His tests are all multiple choice and his essays are REALLY easy. I never even read the books for the class and still made an A. Easy, awesome, interesting teacher!
Very easy, laidback class, but YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS AND READ EVERYTHING HE ASSIGNS. It's the only way you can be successful.
I love Jensen! He really got me into journalism after I took this class. He is brilliant and funny and worth waking up at 8 am for. The class is super easy just read the books and be there for the quizzes, especially since he introduces you to Pilger, the greatest journalist.
He is a true journalist and citizen. Focuses on teaching, not failing. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Great professor, really interesting and knowledgeable. EASY TESTS takes so much pressure off. Resulted in me learning a lot more and taking away the most important ideals from this class. Let me just sit back and enjoy the class. ONLY TIP, go to class and read the text, just read it though don't have to learn every little fact and you'll get an A
I took Jensen for a UGS class. Didn't enjoy it at all; partly because I have no interest in the subject. All he does is stand up there and talk, but he is enthusiastic. A couple of papers due, not too dificult. Test pretty much come straight from lecture. I just review notes from my TA and manage to get B's on the tests. Wouldn't recommend.
I thought this class was great!! Jensen is a funny intelligent guy who is very passionate about journalism. However, I kept an open mind and am not easily offended by other people's opinions (yes, he does speak his opinion, but he does not force it down your throat). 4 exams, 15 quizzes (best 10 taken). Stay on top of reading! Take this class!!!
Love him or hate him. Bob talks straight - you will not have trouble understanding him. His quizzes and tests are fairly easy, even if you just skim the texts; most of the ideas are covered in class. Enforces attendance w/ pop-quizzes. No mid-term or final; 1 exam per unit.
He is likes to express his opinions in class..A LOT. He seems intimidating, but after you meet with him during office hours, he isn't. Read the books. I didn't and I got a B-. If I had read, I think I would have done much more better. Good professor. :)
Had Bob for UGS 303 Freedom. Favorite class of the semester. It wasn't hard at all; I went to class 1/3 of the time and got an A. He lectures from the set time to the end. TA sections helped A LOT- my TA was awesome and gave us at least half the test. No final. Talk to Bob in office hours! He's really interesting! Highly recommend
Took him for UGS 303: Freedom. Really easy class, just go to class and write down his notes. The TA discussion section goes over most of the test for review. Jensen incorporates music and YouTube videos in class. Cool class that gives you different perspectives.
Jensen is a great professor who is very passionate. His class is easy, just don't over think the test questions. His quizzes are extremely easy and there's no final. I'd recommend it for anyone, especially as a GPA booster.
AWESOME!
My favorite class I've taken at UT so far! Highly recommend it. He is insightful and makes subjects relevant to today's world. Could be a GPA booster as well if you go to class. TAKE THIS CLASS !!!!
Awesome prof! Made me want to go to class!
Jensen is a great professor, he makes class interesting because he is really passionate about his job. The class is really easy and he is very sarcastic, which I loved.
Professor Jensen is the best journalism prof I've had so far. He's very chill and makes himself available for his students. He never gives finals and his exams are very straightforward and clear. He doesn't try to trick you. And he's a cool guy to talk to.
Prof. Jensen is the greatest teacher I've ever had. Since taking his class in the fall, I have found myself striving to learn so much more about journalism, democracy, and war. Jensen is articulate and compassionate and cares about teaching. He also finds a way to be humorous even when the subject manner often highlights injustice. Take him.
Bob is such a cool guy! This class is (probably) by far the easiest UGS class at UT! Not much work, and what work there is is simple and straight forward. Attendance isn't necessary, but he does test over his lectures but as long as you get the basic idea you'll be fine! His office hours are EXTREMELY helpful and inspirational, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!
His class is pretty easy and he is really entertaining too.
Jensen or Bob is really strict in terms of his expectations so do not fail to meet those. He is truly passionate about what he teaches and therefore he is great at teaching. Lectures are very clear and he offers his help. Take advantage of office hours as he is extremely helpful. Test questions come from notes and lectures. He is awesome.
I took Jensen's Journalism and Freedom classes and they were both extremely easy. Jensen is boring, "digresses" all the time, and his classes seem to be a huge waste of time. I bought, but didn't read any of the books he assigned (for both classes) and I got an A in both courses. Overall, just show up to class, take notes, and you'll get an A.
Bob is a brilliant professor. I enjoyed his class immensely, and I learned a lot. His pop in-class assignments are annoying but very easy. You get full credit just for doing them. The exams are very straightforward and easy if you read. He's a very cool guy to talk to one on one. Definitely wouldn't mind having him for another class.
Assigned reading and essays
He's a good professor. Funny guy.
This is his first time he has taught a UGS class and I thought it was a lot harder than other UGS classes seem to be. There's a lot of reading and it's really boring reading.
Really awesome, funny guy. Lectures are long, and they sometimes seem boring, but he's going through the thought process with you for everything you learn and it's great. His tests are so easy and they're over a book you only have to read once to understand and his lectures which are also very coherent.
Easy class. 4 very easy tests, drops the lowest grade. 3 easy papers (only 3 pages). Very boring lectures, but i just got the notes from people and still made an A. Reading helps but it's not essential until the last test. A lot of work for a UGS, but not bad.
It's easy to ace this UGS--Bob will tell you that himself. Do the (short!) readings and go to most of the lectures and you'll be fine. Bob himself is pretty cool and straightforward, his lectures are good and he's an interesting guy.
Bob is AMAZING! Not only is he funny and entertaining, he really is brilliant and cares a lot about society and the world. He made me really reflect and think intellectually which is nice. if you go to lecture, do your readings and complete your papers its a pretty easy class. Make sure you take notes in lectures but overall great experience!
Somewhat easy UGS class. Jensen seems like a cool funny guy, but I wouldn't really know since I never went to class... or even bought the books (Yes it's that easy). Boring yet stimulating lectures, easy short tests, somewhat challenging writing assignments (which count for 60% of your grade), and an easy presentation in your discussion class.
I found Jensen to be an interesting professor. He clearly cared about the material, but since it was common sense the class could be boring at times. He has no final and his tests are straightforward multiple choice questions. If you pay attention to his lecture and readings the assignments aren't too hard.
I took two classes with Bob and thoroughly enjoyed both. He's a gifted speaker, making the lectures engaging and sometimes hilarious. The class is straightforward - if you go to class and pay attention, you'll do great. If you have any interest in journalism/writing/argument in general, take his classes!
Dr. Jensen is a very hilarious man that is not afraid to speak his mind. What I really appreciate is that he gives room for opinions that conflict with his own ideas. It takes a while to adjust to his humor, but he is hysterical when you finally get it. If you really want to know why you commit to social action, he is the guy to talk to.
Jensen's class is a blow off. As long as you read the books he assigns (no textbook, which is nice), and at least make an effort on the papers, you'll make an A. Attendance isn't mandatory and I hardly went. All he does is rant and ramble during class, and tests you over the assigned book. His rants are funny, but somewhat irrelevant to the test.
Bob is amazing. His UGS is pretty easy and super interesting!
Bob's class is very easy and requires minimal effort in my opinion. Four 20 question tests, 2 books, 4 canvas readings, and 3 writing assignments. He will challenge what you believe in and make you conceptualize the world in a different way. Although his lectures can be boring at times, he can get pretty "crazy"! You'll see what I mean. 5/5
He gives amazing lectures, and the class is structured so that it builds nicely throughout the semester, although it may not seem to be at the beginning. He is understanding of any issues, and is very accessible if you simply talk to him.
BEWARE: This professor is on a watch list. JK! Jensen's the best. He's a must-take as you make your way through the J School. I'm not saying he's perfect, but a lot of professors in the school don't really practice what they preach. Jensen's willing to put himself out there to call issues out, a key skill for a good journalist. Learn from him.
Thought provoking UGS class. Unlike some professors, Bob welcomes you to challenge what he believes in. 4 easy tests, 3 writing assignments that involve some critical thinking. Very passionate professor overall.
Jensen is AWESOME!!! This was the easiest class I've ever taken! Easily graded essays, SUCH easy tests based on lectures on readings. Make sure you do the readings!!
Bob is a great teacher. Although his lectures could drag on at times because of a slower pace, the benefits are his humor and he never rushes through anything. The tests are easy multiple choice to see if you were awake in class and understood the big ideas of the reading.
If you want to do well on the tests, you need to go to the classes, which is no problem because they are amazing lectures. No textbook, weekly homework, or final. Just make sure to read the assigned readings and you will do well.
This UGS course is probably the sorriest excuse for a class. If he could get over his "digressions" and talk about the material, it would only be slightly better. The essay prompts are confusing and have hardly any relevance to the lecture. I was asked about capitalism in my paper when we didn't cover that until two weeks after the paper was due??
Bob is one of the smartest and most unique people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He has an amazing sense of humor and I looked forward to every single one of his classes. Take his class if you get the chance because he is an amazing professor and his class isn't hard if you take notes, pay attention, and do the reading.
JENSEN! This guy is amazing! Papers are graded pretty leniently and you do have to put some thought and effort behind them, but it's completely doable. Lectures are amazing. TRUST ME, go to class, take good notes, and read the assigned readings, and the tests will be a piece of cake. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you want that A, GO TO CLASS
Loved this professor! His class was at 8am but his funny and animated personality made it fun. He's a really nice guy and wants everyone to do well. His grading isn't tough. No textbook but there are assigned readings. Tests are over lecture material and the readings. I only studied the day before!
Extremely intensive and deep into reading. Do not take if you want an easy A.
This class was very difficult, considering it delves into esoteric law and obscure concepts. The lectures are interesting but TESTS are UNPREDICTABLE.
Take another UGS for an A. This class is more manageable if you're extremely interested. Otherwise take that sleep UGS.
I came into this class thinking it would be an easy A,but I was wrong. The lectures are great, but don't pertain completely to TESTS and POP quizzes
Take another UGS class. This is ALOT of work and tests can be tedious and difficult.
Jensen' was alright. Sort of hard but you can do it if you stay on top of readings
As long as you show up to classes and do the outside event papers, you will make an A. His lectures are always interesting, and he's a really fun guy. If I could take another class from him I would.
Super insightful and woke. Easy A and makes you think. He's just a cool guy that's fun to listen to.
Jensen is by far my favorite professor at UT. He's available whenever you need him and extremely helpful and supportive. His classes are interesting, eyeopening and easy to understand. Material isn't hard at all. Know your lectures and skim through the readings to get a full mark, exams are easy if you know your material.
Not an easy A, especially for a UGS course. There was 2 books to read, 4 essays, and lots of tests. Only graded by tests and essays, so if you do bad on one you are looking at an A- simply because there's not a lot of grades. However, tests are extremely easy if you read, and either go to class or watch his lectures online. Very interesting course.
Jensen is a very interesting lecturer who makes content easy to understand and involves real-world situations instead of the hypotheticals of academia. The tests are easy if you attend/watch the lectures and at least skim the readings. The essay grading is pretty relaxed if you follow the prompt. Discussion section attendance is mandatory.
Bob was an amazing professor who was truly passionate about his subject, honest about his views, and persuasive in his arguments. Grades were a few essays talking about your opinion (basically) and some true/false tests that just went over the lecture materials. All lectures are online and you only need some cheap texts for the class. 10/10 class.
Jensen is a little quirky, but he is a great professor. He is very animated and made me laugh every class. The tests questions are straight from the lectures, and he is helpful in what he is looking for in essays. He didn't require a textbook. Also- he doesn't allow technology in his class, so make sure to get a notebook to take notes on.
Took 'Food: Culture and Agriculture' with Jensen and it was great! His lectures are awesome- especially for being 8am. He's a pretty funny dude. If you come to class and listen you should be able to get 100s on all the tests, you can get away without reading the material (but you should). The papers were enjoyable and simple.
Prof. Jensen is a funny and caring guy. However the concepts of his course are so simple that could put you directly into sleep. Chapter 1 is the hardest, be careful.
I loved Dr. Jensen. By far one of the best professors at UT. This is such a great class to take if it's your first semester. He talks about capitalism, patriarchy, racism, etc. and explains them in a very simple and easy-to-understand way. 4 tests, 3 essays, and a presentation. It sounds like a lot but I didn't mind bc they're SO easy to do!
This guy is truly insane and it was amazing. 8 am class and Jensen was jumping onto tables and screaming about how the world was ending. With that being said, his tests were 20 questions MC but actually more like 19 because the last question was always like, "Jensen is crazy. True or False?" Easy, enjoyable class, especially if you're a pessimist.
