he knows the stuff but he doesn't know how to teach it. I took this class in high school but it was still confusing the way he explained things. If you're taking this class for the first time, look for another teacher because this one will confuse you.
Class is alright. He does bore you to death, but does tell you enough information so you do well on the test. At the end of the year, whatever you get on the Final, is what you'll get in the class. He makes that deal, but it can't hurt you.
One time I asked him if he could define a theorem that he was explaining; he said "You're out of luck; that's Algebra 101; go look it up in the library." He was so rude I ended up dropping his class; I plan to retake it in the fall with another
He is the best math teacher I have ever had in my intire life he made me understand math! I got an A in his class cause he always would explain everything! I totally recommend him to everyone who usually has trouble with math.
Took him for Math 2 - Pre-Calc. I needed to get class done and stuck it out. I would say 1/3 to 1/2 of the class dropped out. Moves very quickly through the material, is NOT helpful, is rude when you don't get it and ask him to explain again. I treated it
Took his class...godd teacher, but moves through material way too fast - whoever is behind, he doesn't care, just moves on and on..... Test are somewhat hard, includes every little detail covered in class.
Allright teacher, but moves way too fast through material. Clear handwriting, fair tests.
Karkafi sucks. Lectures as if it is for his own amusement, and cares nothing for the students in his class. Don't miss three classes, or you'll get an F. My friend had a B, missed class due to illness, and was failed. I can see why his classes never fill up. Why does he still have a job???
he's boring. You can't miss class unless you dare to fail. His test are fairly easy if you're really into studying on your own. Rude if you don't understand something.AVOID HIM!
His teaching style is so fast but he never skin the important things. Eventhogh, he teaches very fast, he mention important things. if you miss one time in class, you exam score gonna be down. But if you dont miss the class, and follow his direction. it is easy to get grade. i got 100% all of exam.
High expectation and hard core exams. Diffcult to even pass if you just do the homwork.
The first exam was the most difficult and is a weeder test. His exams focus on the concept. Don't look for questions that are from HW or lecture. Don't ask questions on algebra. The more you participate, the more he will help you out. Overall, I think he is a pretty good professor.
Boring lectures, but that's how math is. The tests were hard to understand. I liked him but can understand why a lot of people don't. Recommend with reservation.

He is ok - i am good with math but his exam problems are kinda hard. I got an A on the end, but I droped the class after the first exam and he made me to take it again after several days. If you have problems with math, do not even try. Othervise, if you like and know math, he is a right teacher for you.
He is a no-nonsense teacher, but I learned a lot. His tests are difficult, so you need to understand the concetps, not just memorize formulas. I liked him!
I took his class math 7 almost 8 years ago. even though I have failed in the test (ciit) he gave another chance .Now I have become civil engineer .I thank him alot for scaring me and for the second chance . TURK
Megalomaniac!Knows anyone trying to transfer needs his class but doesn't care. Tries to weed people out. Doesn't understand the word "teacher". He gave a quiz on a Monday and test on a Wednesday! Unrealistic homework assignments. He seems to think his class is the only one you're taking. Not sure how he still has a job.--Aggrevated 'A' student.
Beware, this guy is a part-time teacher. He DOES NOT have office hours, and doesn't really like to show up early or stay late to help. He constantly makes comments like "if you don't understand this right now, you'll never make it in the science field and you should change your major." You might want another teacher...
I took his class in spring semester... his teachings could use some clarity, and his tests are hard yet he does go easy on you on some tests. If you need help he might seem un-approachable but he will help you
Knows math, doesn't know how to teach. His attitude in general sucks and he doesn't like to help at all. I was sure that all the people who wrote negative reviews were exaggerating but everything said is true. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!. SMC shouldn't let him teach.
Magnificient professor; he knows his stuff. Great for students who are serious about learning and searching for a career in the sciences. If you are a slacker, someone who doesn't do the HW and just plays with their "Sidekick" during class, stay away! You're taking up space.

Karkafi is an okay teacher. He starts off fast on the review stuff and then he slows down if he sees the class start slacking. most people want the easy A but he makes you work for it. anyone going into a math based major esp. engineering should DEFINITELY
He knows how to explain mathmatical theories and stuff. Though English is my second language, I understood everything in Math 2. The tests are pretty much from homework. You will be fine if you do all the homework and attend each class. It was helpful that we could see the back of the text book during some tests.
Took this in winter. He explains clear, force you to think instead of taking things for granted. If I were taking this class in a regular term with him, I can learn more and better. Exams are okay, final is hard. I think he just want to see how much you've learn. Generous in giving partial credit.
he is the best teacher ever. i got an A in his class. tests are easy. he is very kind when students ask. people are wrong. i'm sure why they say like that is becaue they are stupid. study and you can get an A! : )
Good teacher, his tests are difficult. He tried to help his students to pass the class. However, he's not an easy grader. If you want to get an A, you have to work really hard. I got a C in his class.
I took a summer class. He is very organized and never late to class. Don't have to do every single hw qs but need to study hard for tests. Tests are hard and long but also very doable if you study. Fair in grading. No EC or curve. Don't miss class. Fair and clear teaching style. Ask questions. Friendly and understanding personality. Great class!
He was nice, responsible and smart. Yet sometimes he made mistakes while solving problems on the board. A nice person outside of class. Tests were kinda of hard. However the questions were all from the homework. He gave As to people who got A in the final no matter how bad they got in the previous tests.

I took Math 2 in a 6-weeks section, it was short and intense, but he tried to explain everything as clear as possible. I would take math 7 with him but unfortunately he only teaches math 2.
He was nice, responsible!! Test were quite hard but it is possible to get high scores. He is trying to make everyone get good grade in the class. Pay attention in the class. Don't miss class then you will get A.
His tests vary in difficulty from extremely hard to super easy. It is very possible to get an A. Extremely Helpful and Clear Professor. KEEP UP ON THE HOMEWORK AND PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO PROBLEMS IN CLASS. Gave me a B even though I clearly deserved a C. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED OVERALL. GREAT PROFESSOR.
Mr.KarKafi sometimes would give out difficult exams, but he is still a easy grader. In addition, he is quite a responsible person. Nice teacher, but not an easy one.
Icould not understand anything he said. unclear at all. yes, an easy grader, but i had to takea tutor to pass this class cause I didnt undersand nothing. he doesnt explain well at all.
hardest tests i have ever taken in my life, they have nothing to do with lecture or homework and he doesn't act surprised when students fail.
DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!! His tests are ridiculously hard EVEN if you studied. He doesn't care about the students. Seems to be happy when they fail. Half of my class was either failing or dropped the class.
Professor Karkafi is a great teacher. He appears to be quite serious, but he really cares about his students. His tests are difficult, but they are fair. If you do the homework and pay attention, you should be fine.
I got a B for the class but its not because of a good teacher, I studied a lot by myself, he is not a part of my hard work at all. Material he goes through is completely different from the tests because he doesn't make any examples, I wouldn't let him teach if I could, but he is a nice person not a teacher though.
he is a really great guy, but tough, he wants to challenge you and make you think, Make sure you show up to every class, do the homework and try to get to know him on a personal level and you'll see he is a really good person, although the tests are hard and you're responsible for knowing everything he is pretty generous with the points.
The worst math teacher i've ever had. Made simple algebra more confusing than necessary. Dropped his class, retook the placement test and aced it using other methods than his.
one of the worst teachers ive ever had, made a simple class way more confusing than it needed to be. dont take this class.
He really knows his stuff. Sometimes he gets confused, but you can tell that he loves the subject. He is helpful with problems and really makes sure people understand the material.
Hard class. Teacher is gij... as long as you show up take notes and review, you should do fine...
WORST class ever! made simple Math 20 harder than what it suppose to do. He makes you think Math 20 is Calculus.
he is a really bad teatcher I never had any problem in math but I pass this class with a C everyone in the class was supose to fell the class... the final exam had exactly the same question as the prvious exam so we just learned them by heart without understanding anything
he is the worst teacher ever, you can not pass the class, if you are not math prof.
Really hard professor, he teaches really quickly and if you don't get what he is saying u r doomed.... I took it in winter session and i feel behind coz i get the book one week later.... the hw was massive that even trying to catch was pointless. in the exams there are questions that he never mentions during class if u r smart he is a challenge
Garbage can teacher. Doesn't know how to teach if you cant teach yourself your done.
Teacher really is not that bad. I showed up to class almost every time, and did a lot of the homework. he does not follow the book too well cause he thinks the book is too easy. makes it hard to study when he just does proofs in class. I still got and A but it was not easy. defiantly can be done though. good luck
I dont know what everyone is complaining about. I struggled through the first half of winter semester, but he is a very good teacher and helped me understand the material thoroughly. I was bad at math but after him I can proudly say that I no longer fear it Pay attention, understand the work, ask lots of questions and you'll find things much easier
smartest, hardest math teacher i ever took. straight up genius and teaches out of his own mind with just a book and marker. he does know how to teach, you just have to get on his level. even though i failed him, i think he is a fair teacher. DO THE HW!
The most difficult math class Ive ever taken, just barely got an A, & that was while working fulltime & doing hw during lunch breaks & a minimum 8 hrs on both Sat. and Sun. every weekend throughout the semester. You'll be studying in his class more than any other class you've ever taken. Show progess, do good on the final & he'll bump up ur grade
He kinda goes fast, but it's winter so you can't blame him, he's clear, sharp, and more than fair in test and HW, if you know you're stuff and willing to study he's great...
Be prepared to work, I can't stress that enough. His tests are difficult to study for because he writes his own test and they are much more difficult that the problems or examples in the text. So when he puts examples up on the board, STUDY them.
his a great teacher but his test ARE REALLY HARD AND LONG!! take if you had pre cal already in high school or college. you will be studying more than any other class. he is a really easy grader tho. show improvement and he bumps up your grade. he truly cares about his students
Math is fun but this teacher tried to make math very difficult.I think He doesn't prepare his note before he came in class. He teach very fast without methodology. He tried to scar student in class to drop. Also,he doesn't explain very well .You need to study by your own. Please don't take him.
This class is not for the faint-hearted. I took this class in the summer. It was very fast paced and a lot of work. If you are new to precalc I would advise taking this class in a longer semester. However, if you are a math person, this class is a great review and an easy a. It's really not that hard; people just don't want to do the work.
It really was not that hard of a class. There were about 5 or 6 exams. The exams were long though, maybe about 20 problems each. But the problems on the test were just like the ones he went over in lecture, so as long as you go over the lecture notes, you should be fine. And if you took precalc in high school, this class is not difficult at all
Don't take his class if your grade is important. Half of the students didn't finish the exams before time ran out. (And of those that did, some were because they simply didn't know the answers.) Tests are therefore not an accurate measure of your ability and your grade will suffer as a result.
The only reason many of the students complain about professor Karkafi is because he or she is looking for an easy class. It is college. Expect to work hard to earn a good grade. He is helpful and cares for his students. If you show that you want to learn, he will be more than happy to help. He will definitely get you prepared for harder classes.
If you're looking for a high school math class than look elsewhere. Prof Karkafi is very helpful , smart and great at teaching. If you want to pass his tests than take notes during lecture. If the student is willing to learn than he will be more than happy to help. He is tough but that is what makes his students push themselves to try hard. :)
I was take this class last semester. He is very cleary and helpful. If you planing to take math2 class, I'm strongly recommend him. But you should attend his class as well. If you skip his class even one time, you'll get hard time;-) His lecture is perfect to understand things what you study. His class is awesome!!!!
loved it
He deserves a MUCH better rating!!! I have a very hard time with math but Professor Karkafi made me so much more confident in the subject. He is a great teacher and very helpful. I found the class to be a LOT of work and difficult but that is entirely due to the subject, not the professor. Put in the effort and do the HW and you'll be fine.
Mr. Karkafi knows how to do math (as he should), but I did NOT enjoy this class at all. The tests were usually 9 problems, but they were super complex and problems we usually never saw before. He had Sunday morning lectures for those who wanted more help, but they were at 7am to 10am. I actually like math and I am not bad at it, but this class.. no
Great Professor! He challenges you like a teacher should. I worked my butt off in his class and I ended with a better understanding of Mathematics. He occasionally gives out practice tests or study guides and will HELP you if you ASK for it!
Science Majors - Take this class. Non-Science Majors - do not take this class. Prof. will bring the best out of you! He will make you think outside the box. Prof. took time out of his busy schedule and held extra class sessions before trig test and final. You will get your money's worth. You want a challenge in life? Take this class!
Good Math class for students who have a good understanding of Math. For those who struggle this class won't be the best for you. He is pretty strict, but fair on the exams. H.W is not mandatory, but I would recommend to do the h.w because it is basically your study guide for the exam. Grade based on 5 exams and he drops the lowest exam grade.
Take him if you're good at math and you want a challenge. The material in the textbook is easy, which is why he throws in some challenging questions on his exams. My only complaint is that he is not the best lecturer. But not the worst either. Don't expect an easy A either.
fair grader, one of the better math profs at smc
I was not a STEM major and found his class ridiculously hard, lectures are boring and too fast as it is and the test looked nothing like the homework or tests (which there was a ridiculous amount of) and I had previous knowledge of precalc going into this class. The class went from full to about 7 people because this class was so hard.
i take his math 18 in fall semester. it is supper hard. sometimes if there is something you don't understand, he would not stop for explaining to you. also he teaches very fast. Indeed, he has a strong accent. there were around 40 students in his class first, but only after half of them droop, there si only 1 or 2 can get an A.
Very harsh. I was a good student, but stuff he said to other students was just wrong and mean. Lots of hw. He missed class more than I did. Five times in one semester. Didn't show up last week of class b/c of jury duty. That really upset me. Not a terrible professor overall, just didn't seem to care much. Never returned last test before final.
Prof. Karkafi definitely helped refresh & teach key content to prepare for college level math. He can go fast, but wants you to ask as many questions until you get it. Lots of homework, do as much as you can. See him during office hours, form study groups, go to math lab. If you show up and participate, he'll at least give you the pass. Nice guy.
The class is okay, he explains the material pretty well, but he can be rude and a bit sarcastic if you don't fully understand it or how he got to a certain step in a problem. There was a lot of homework, it helps with understanding the material, but I found it difficult to keep up with it.
His lectures are fine, however, the questions he requests you to do on the exam are way different than the material you go over in class. More than 24 people fail his exams, and only one person got an A. His goal is to challenge the students than teaching them the right material.
This class was challenging even with some precalc knowledge going in. His tests really try to expand on the concepts that you learn from the homework. He does come off slightly sarcastic at times and the lectures are only helpful because of the step by step process he wants you to go through. I would recommend a tutor to get through the HW.
I have NEVER been good at math. Took math 31 three times, never finished in high school, etc. Prof. Karkafi is stern & tough, but explains things thoroughly, encourages you to ask questions, & has even offered reviews on weekends. Once he warms up, you can tell he is a good person and wants you to succeed. One of the best teachers I've ever had!
Graded on 4test + final. Writes own exams, hard to understand. My tutor thought I was in calculus. No extra credit. Gives practice exams that set you up to fail, expect real exam to be more difficult. Doing HW not helpful. Thinks if you don't do well on his tests you should be in lower math class, has no problem telling you that, **avoid**
Professor Karkafi is an incredible math teacher. He has no pop quizzes and is very understanding. He is good at tests,
He is a very caring instructor, and he will tell you straight what you need to work on, or if you need to go back to a remedial class. He gave up his own time on a weekend to prepare the class for the final exam. Be prepared to do all the homework and practice tests and spend a lot of time in the math lab with a tutor.
This is absolutely the best professor I've ever had in my life! I used to hate math but after taking his class I just love it! I am even thinking of changing my career path. He is definitely a tough professor and makes you work hard. But this is the only way you can learn math! If you want to learn, DEFINITELY take him!!! Absolutely best ever!
Don't take his class if you aren't willing to learn, he is a tough grader and his exams definitely differ from the homework but if you listen in class he works through every problem- hence why you can't miss a day. His lectures are engaging and he relates things back to the real world, overall a great teacher!
Dont recommend him at all! If youre good at math already go ahead and try but his tests are completely different than what he teaches and he doesnt really care if you pass or fail Even if he claims he does. blames the class for bad test grades but when we ask for help he doesnt do a good job at giving it. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO PASS
As far as SMC professors go, he's decent. The curriculum for the Math department is messy for non-Math majors. At the start of the semester, he vaguely warned us of this, and you'll understand once you move on to Calc. He should supply more supplementary materials, and the time commitment for this class is insane. But you'll get good fundamentals.
I took his class even when I had taken precalculus at a different school. He assigned a ton of homework, in which his tests had nothing to do with. Not to mention he missed more class than I did and got a subsitute to teach the week of thanksgiving. You could also tell he did not want to be there. We started with 40 students and ended with 13.
he is the worst professor i have taken at SMC. He has zero communication with his students. Most of the time it seems like he does not know what he is taking about. He makes up his own rules for algebra. He does not let you know what your grade is until You officially see it on your transcript. DO Not take him if u like your GPA!!!!
He is a pretty tough professor. His test are difficult but they prepare you so much for future math courses. He drops one test and gives some E.C on tests.
Best and most inspirational math professor I've ever had. He takes time out of his own day to stay after class if you need extra help or if you haven't understood a concept he's already gone over. He's willing to go over test questions you got wrong too. He might seem serious in his demeanor but he's a teddy bear inside.
Professor Karkafi is very clear at the beginning of the semester of what you need to do to succeed in his class. He does not sugar coat anything. DO THE HOMEWORK! It will help you! A very difficult class to keep up with. Take him if you are willing to put in the work!
4 exams and final, drops 1 exam - thats it, thats your grade. Homework is basically worth nothing, and he assigns a lot of it. Only works out of the textbook problems, exams are written by him and toughly graded. However, hes still a good prof and his lectures are engaging, his application to real life made math a lot more interesting.
The toughest math Proffesor I have ever take. His exams are pretty hard, so it is not easy to pass from this class. But if you'r already good at math and want to develop your math skills, you are in true address, go for it.
Professor Karkafi is the best math professor I have taken as of yet. I genuinely am disappointed that he has such low ratings and average gpa. If you ask questions, he responds to them fully. Dedicates the day before every exam to answering any and all questions. He doesn't give out your grade for free, but if you do the work, you get the grade.
good teacher and really spend his weekend time for students.
One of the best professor that I had, answers all questions completely. He cares about all the students to follow his lecture. He came to extra session for us on weekends and solved question from previous semester's exams. Hard grader but perfect teacher. Math2 requires lots of work, if your major is math or engineering he is best teacher for you
If you are serious about science and mathematics take him, he's extremely rigor and conceptual. if you just need the credit to pass and move on and math isn't something you're willing to work hard for then you best to take someone else.
I had him during the pandemic and he was not understanding at all. He was nice enough to give us extra office hours on the weekend, but he also made extra lecutes on Sunday night to catch up during finals month. He didn't respond to emails, and his lecture and homework were not reflected on the exam. Take him if you dare. But not in a pandemic.
I took him Spring 2019, he is a professional instructor, I cannot deny that. However, if you need to pass this class, it might be better just skip him, but if you're already good at math and you want to improve yourself then that's the best place.
There is nothing I liked about this class. This class was very difficult and very fast. He gave us an unbelievable amount out work to do per day. Hes very confusing in answering questions. He hardy ever responds to peoples emails or text messages. Worst professor ever! AVOID!! I could write a whole essay on why not to take him.
Tough professor, he knows math very well but won't help you if you aren't up to his level. With the low-quality zoom lectures, you are practically teaching yourself from the textbook directly. Even though he is nice, the class is probably better in person. This is the kind of professor you go to this website to avoid.
I really did not enjoy Professor Karkafi's class. I understand that no one signed up to teach online but each zoom lecture we had the camera was extremely blurry so most of the time I wasn't able to even read what was written. Really tough exams and the class average was very low, I would stay away from his class if you could
The Math department at SMC is the most disgraceful faculty I have ever encountered. All the way from the prehistoric curriculum to the uncaring teachers. Honestly the worst set of teachers that don't even care about their students, I don't know whether it's because they're paid horribly or whatever but I am genuinely appalled. Avoid Prof. Karkafi
I regret taking his class because he is terrible. Completely unresponsive to emails/texts, which is really frustrating during distance learning. His explanations can be confusing and not much helpful. Gives A LOT of hw that it is impossible to stay on top of it!!! Same with tests, and his tests are extremely difficult. I recommend avoiding him!!!!
I can't understand why professor Kakafi's rate is so low. He is such an amazing professor. His exams are similar to his lectures and homework. He dedicates a lot of time to his students. He gives us extra lectures (which are not mandatory) that we can ask questions about lectures and homework. He was one of the best professors that I had in SMC.
THE WORST TEACHER. He is so rude and does not respond to emails. He does not explain anything and his exams are difficult
I'm not sure why Professor Karkafi has a decent rating. You need to avoid this class. His lectures are 2 1/2 hours long, terrible quality, and so boring. He does not answer questions or emails. His tests are very difficult and take a long time, almost every student doesn't finish the test. He doesn't give out quizzes and randomly asks for hw.
I took Karkfari and by far one of the hardest classes Ive ever taken. His lectures are dense and zooms through lectures quickly. Hes a great guy DONT get me wrong but this class was so difficult. He gives lots of hwk and hardly responds to emails. Also grades on a few things (hwk & exams).
MATH2 is intensive, but still, Prof Karkafi went through all the material in an extremely thorough fashion and managed to keep it engaging. He also provided three hour sessions on a Saturday morning to work through questions and give us lots of practice. Participation is definitely keybe sure to speak up in class and engage with the material.
hes a great professor overall and helps you with any questions you have. the test papers are fairly hard if you want an A. make sure to take advantage of the extra credit questions. although he didnt really take attendance but if you missed one class you would be lacking behind a lot.
I took Prof Karkafi in the summer of 2020, which I believe wasn't my best choice. He is very knowledgeable in this area, however, I feel like it is best to take him for a semester session rather than an eight-week session like myself. Put in the work and he will reward you. Not an easy A at all, but it's not impossible if you truly do the work.
I took classes in the fall of 2021. Simply, 80% of students dropped or Withdrawal this class. He has a lot of classes on weekends(2-3hours), and he suddenly noticed exam 2-3 days before, has no extra credit, does not reply to e-mails, replaces office hours with classes on weekends, tough grader. But, I admit he's not a bad professor.
He is impossible to get a hold of by email. Very disorganized professor when it comes to managing students needs but decent at teaching the material.
he's very straightforward so decide asap if you want to be in that class or not. You start working day 1, leaves a lot of homework , INSANELY amount. Honestly to pass this class you have to have a knowledge of pre calculus COLLEGE LEVEL or you will not pass. He also writes his own test, most questions are lecture questions so review notes.
The class started out full with around 30+ students and by the end of the year, there were roughly 10 or so. The first test we took 60% of the class got an F or lower with only 3 people getting a B or an A and he blamed it on the students. He knows his stuff well but is not the best at explaining it and tends to move along at his own pace.
Horrible Professor. He expects you to know the subject. If i knew the subject why would I take the class. I am in the class to learn not simply to get a passing grade. Being a teacher is like having a gift. Learn from Jaime Escalante.
Great teacher and an even greater person. He might be tough with the material, but that's because he cares and wants to prepare you for success. If you're not here to learn, don't take his class. But if you want a caring teacher who knows his stuff and will help you, he's your guy. I'm grateful for his class, and I consider myself lucky.
Professor Karkafi is knowledgeable but can be challenging. The workload is heavy, and the exams are tough. However, if you put in the effort and utilize resources like the textbook and Unstuck study for study prep, you can succeed. Attendance is mandatory, so be ready to engage in class.
Great person, good at what he does, touch teacher
Fantastic person, Amazing teacher. hard to communicate through email.
