it was a pretty esay class online...just participate in discussion and write essays
No Comments
Goes over same material 2 or 3 times in a week. Essay tests are pretty easy if you know your stuff. If you just listen in class, pay close attention, take notes, and participate, you are assured an A
Dr. Katz is the best teacher for hum.
This guy is awsome! The best teacher I've had in college so far!
I had him for his first year and I thought he was a pompous! Hopefully he's changed in the last five years, but in the beginning he was a jerk!
Gives alot of essays and papers. Three papers were do on one day. Gives ALOT of pop quizes. He's good at what he does, but requires alot
This teacher knows his stuff but is a jerk. Not nice to students who are not like him, not open to diversity I felt. Very non-understanding and boring for music.
gives a lot of essays and grades them really hard. It seems like he just looks for the negative in papers, never has anything positive to say about students essays
Ught!! BORING AS HELL!!
He was horrible for my online humanities class! He even posted homework after finals week before the class was over. The work was easy but he took at least a month to grade every assignment. He should be fired for not being professional
He's an awesome professor. Knows his stuff and gives plenty of notice in advance for assignments. Essay tests are pretty easy as long as you pay attention in class. I'd take him for all my classes if I could
He is a great professor. I recommend his class to anyone who enjoys good discussions and interesting assignments. I really enjoyed his class, and he was very knowledgeable.
he's a really good teacher, I def. advise you to take him!!

Very easy online course. Just write 4 papers and comment at least twice on the weekly discussions - that's it. No final. No multiple choice tests. I found the course to be extremely boring but also very easy.
He is cool and not that hard.
He is a good professor and enjoys what he teaches but essay assignments are somewhat hard but interesting. Pay attention in class for the essay quizes and tests.
i wasn't very interested in this course at first but he makes it fun cuz he's really funny- so the class is less boring- he'll make u laugh
I was dreading taking his class. That was the worst grade I got compaired to all my other classes, But his class turned out to be my funniest class. I learned alot. He really knows his stuff
Not clear at all on assignments. Gives a ton of essays without that much notice. The class discussions are funny though. Only essay tests and no actual homework other than a ton of essays. A LOT OF POP QUIZZES!!! He is very funny though and knows his stuff, but he wants you to only see things from his point of view.
Great class. Easy pop quizzes. Fun essays. Good final and midterm. I was able to learn a lot in this class without having to do a ton of work. This teacher is funny, entertaining, and quite knowledgeable. If you have any interest in the subject of Humanities, take his class!!! It was one of the few classes that I truely enjoyed attending.
boring
In life there are two kinds of people Leaders and Followers and you have the choice to become either one. Now as for this man, he is under the impression that he is the creator of the known universe and the students are all pawns in his personal deranged game of schizophrenic cat and mouse. Dont take this guy! BEWARE!!
Katz is a very nice guy for the most part. Pretty boring at times but also has a fun side to him. If you take his class be prepared to write A LOT. Every test, h/w assignment, or quiz are nothing but essay questions. The class was definately very interesting and I learned a lot! Would recommend if you LOVE humanities and LOVE to write.
For the 2nd time taking humanities 1, I thought he would be more of a helpful teacher. I thought wrong. He would spend more than half a class hour telling the class how we all did the essay wrong and didn't see things the way he did. You better have a way open mind and suck up to pass this class.
While he doesn't give good grades to lazy students who refuse to work, he cares about giving good grades to students who work for a good grade. You don't need to suck up or have an extremely open mind to do well in his class, as was said below. With insight into humanities and good writing skills the essays are cake. Interesting class, NOT BORING!
Dr. Katz really knows the material and introduces you to interesting ideas.
I don't understand these negative reviews. Dr. Katz is a knowledgeable, funny professor. You know, his essay assignments can help your writing skills, and therefore your performance in future classes, if you follow his instruction and ask for help (from him, or the writing center tutors) before the paper is due. His class was fun; I liked him.
do not take prof. katz
DO NOT take this class online if you want to EVER have a CLUE how you're doing. Dr. Katz takes FOREVER to grade ANYTHING and made me wait TWO MONTHS for an essay grade. He seems to forget that he even has online students. Also, don't bother trying to email him, because he takes forever to answer, IF he does at all. His online classes are boring.
Very interesting and cool teacher. Cares about what he teaches, and loves discussion with his students. If you get a chance to take him, DO IT!!! One of the best teachers that I have had at TCC!
Here's the DL on Dr. Katz. He's serious about what he does, he's fair in his grading if you make a legitimate effort to turn in a good assignment, and he doesn't baby you. In my opinion, that's the definition of a good college professor.
I loved Katz's class. It was a lot of essays and really difficult for me, but he knew what he was talking about and his class was a lot of fun. He was completely fair on grading.
Good teacher. Not the best at doing grades. He lost two of my papers and i had to redo one because I didn't keep a copy. emailing him is worthless. He takes forever to respond.
Um yea im a lil disappointed because i did all the extra credit we could do and I still got a C when I know its supposed to be a B. It was a easy class for me because i write well but I think the grading was really unfair.
This professor is not fair in grading at all. No matter how hard you try he will not give you the full amount of points on anything. He take forever to grade, and does not respond to emails.
I took this online, and the syllabus wasn't totally useless, big due dates were left up in the air til crunch time. weekly reading assignments were not scheduled out for you so you never really knew how long you would have to do anything. He takes forever to grade anything. Forget trying to email, he never answers. I will not take him again.
katz is awesome. he's a very interesting person. dark humor... for those reviews saying he is tough on grading, he probably just didnt like you. but you must have done something for him to not like you. such as skipping class and expecting him to help you out.
Great teach. He's a pretty funny guy. Made the class pretty interesting. Basically, show up to class, do the work, and you'll do great. I have no idea what the people are talking about when they say he grades difficult. Seemed pretty level headed to me.
katz is awesome. he's a very interesting person. dark humor... for those reviews saying he is tough on grading, he probably just didnt like you. but you must have done something for him to not like you. such as skipping class and expecting him to help you out.
He really knows his history. Likes class discussion & participation. Great guy & will help you with essays if you email it to him ahead of time. Has extra credit. Can't just sleep through class & get an A-Have to do the reading and the work.
I don't know if it was just this semester or what, but I took his online class and he took FOREVER to get things graded and posted. For example, term ends tomorrow, one of my essays still hasn't been graded (turned in a month ago) and one of the discussion threads hasn't even been posted to participate in. It's hard to know where you stand.
One of my favorite teachers ever! Laid back and fun. He made the humanities very interesting and was very open to hearing what anyone had to say. He's firm on the assignments. So just get them done. Anyway I would definitely suggest him to anyone taking the Humanities. To bad he doesn't teach Humn 2.
Dr. Katz was awesome. The class was always interesting. The book wasn't used often, it is the extra reading he gives that counts, you read those & do the work, you pass. The more you are involved in the class the better the chance to understand. Some power points were useful, just boring. Also, future students, ask him to wear THE shirt.
AWESOME teacher! I would definitely recommend him. He gives a lot of essays but the essays bring your grade up if you do good. He also gives extra credit!
All in all, a good teacher. Just make sure to devote some time to the readings and you'll be ok. Also a bit strict when grading essays, but nothing over the top. (repeat 1st sentence)
Good teacher, and tries to make it as interesting as possible. somewhat of a difficult class if you aren't into history I wouldn't take this class.
Dr. Katz is pretty cool. His class is a little hard and I don't really understand all the technical parts of music but he is doing his best to help me learn. He is super funny and his class is a joy. Lucky for us, we got a class of about 5 students. Just do your work and you should be fine!
I struggled in Dr. Katz's class... but that is in part that I am not artistic whatsoever. The class material was easy all in all... I just didn't understand it and he didn't go out of his way to help me to understand it. Is a good class for music majors not science ones :)
Easy grader Mr Katz does not grade harsh but actually takes almost a whole semester just to post grades from when class begun you'll never know where you stand in the class by withdraw time I made an A the class is just reading and doing about 10 discussion broads and 3 essays and an artwork analysis Lets hope you are a creative writer
Awful class! Extremely boring! Decent grader but does NOT give enough assignments for you to make a good grade. There are far better humanities professors out there.
Has a sense of humor, however EXTREMELY slow paced and boring... Gives essay tests! And does not assign enough work to make a decent grade. Does offer extra credit though...
Katz is pathetic, his essays will have you tearing your hair out and he is a pig. Also, he was a lazy student in college and as a result, is balding.
He is an imbecile that thinks the world revolves around his way of thinking. For a guy that is all about seeing the big picture, he is EXTREMELY biased. Don't waste your time unless you were hoping to get into a Comp 1 class and couldn't. Hope you enjoy essays
He is extremely biased. We should be able to express our opinion but he always disagrees-always. I would not recommend him at all. All of his test are essays plus additional essays that he will tear apart. Also if you are Christian, he will definitely insult you in some form. His attitude is that of "i'm better than you". Worst class i've taken!
Overall, he is a good teacher. He isn't boring, but he does go at a slower pace than other teachers might. He's helpful and will answer questions to whatever you have on your mind. His tests aren't difficult but you do need to study the notes he gives. The only thing I don't is that he uses mild profanity. Other than that he's good.
Katz is a really interesting and funny guy. If you ENJOY WRITING, TAKE THIS CLASS. There arent very many grades and sometimes the assighnments are confusing. But he is very helpful and a fair grader. Class is sometimes boring but tis important to go, and take notes. Do the extra credit and you'll be fine!
pretty cool guy, but he gave more writing assignments than my comp prof did. just be prepared to write. tests are essay questions. gives a basic idea of what test will be over, but expects you to "anticipate the questions."
This class was easy and fun. It was actually alot easir than my high school classes. I liked that he seemed so intent on his course but also a funny guy. His tests and assignments aren't difficult as long as you are prepared for them. I would recommend this class.
Don't take this guy. Let me just lay it out for you. 2 essay tests. 4 essay papers he grades vigorously that are work 25 pts each. 1 final paper that's worth 100. 4 quizzes that are work 25 altogether. Participation points total 50. This class is structured so the proffessor has complete control of your grade.
Great teacher, he has ample knowledge of music, and he made class fun. He is a must take for humanities credit. He teaches pop culture, and music lessons as well.
The work isn't bad but he doesn't grade ANYTHING which is frustrating when you turn things in on time and expect them to be graded on time, as well. He seems nice enough and interested in the course. I wouldn't necessarily recommend him but I wouldn't say he's awful. If you need the course and he's the only one available, it would be alright.
UUUGHHHH. He seems like a nice enough guy and if you need the class, it's not hard. But he doesn't grade ANYTHING until the last second and grades fairly harshly. I was surprised that since he waited so long to grade my essays and discussion posts, that he would give such low grades. It doesn't seem fair since he clearly doesn't put in the work.
Great class I took this class online and you will need to read your book. However the required papers are easy to understand and he gives you more than enough material to find what you need. He offers video links and there are plenty of videos on the web to cover all the questions if you just refuse to read the material. I enjoyed the class!
Since I have an interest in honors music appreciation this class was not difficult. While the class can be long, dry, and boring other times its nice to sit down and listen to music. Katz speaks rather quietly and his ideas can sometimes not make sense but other than that this class is a nice way to unwind from a long class previous to HMA.
Grading takes forever and there's not enough assignments, I've done well on everything but the 5 question quizzes and it doesn't seem possible for me to get anything but a passing grade at this point. Also, if you don't plan on reading the textbook, don't even consider the class.
I took this class online. You WILL NOT get any grades back in a timely manner. Somewhat rude in his responses to discussions. And posted NEW homework assignments Three days before the Final is due.
First, let me say that I greatly enjoyed the subject matter of this class. However, he hasn't updated announcements since Oct 8. Hasn't graded anything since Oct 27. He basically hasn't graded three essays and four other assignments. There are a slew of other issues I can't fit here. I wish I had taken self pace instead. Do not recommend.
He does not respond to emails. I communicate through emails and he only responded to me twice, once was telling me to simply withdraw from the class. 4 quizzes(in class), 4 essays Midterm, final. If you miss class, nothing can be made up. I got extremely ill and had to work a lot of days. He simply didnt care. I enjoyed his class, untill the end.
I took his course online. His posts were unorganized, and his grammar did not make much sense. I took his Humanities course and was not happy with my final results. All of his grades rewarded minuscule points, but his tests had an exponential amount, I got an average of a B (80%) on every assignment, but I missed one test and it failed me.
He's a great teacher and makes taking notes fun. There is a textbook but it's not required for bring in rather you keep it at home to read from. Offers extra credit that will make up for missing or scoring horribly on the pop quizzes. Overall is a fun teacher and gives great learning environment! You can submit papers by email rather than by hand.
This was my first online class. I did enjoy it. Professor Katz always responded to my emails quickly. He is also a very fair grader, as long as you do the work and turn things in on time. The only down side to the class was that he was a little slow on his grading. I would for sure take another one of his classes.
I took this class online and it was pretty difficult due to the subject. Grading consists of discussion boards and papers only. No tests. I found myself often not knowing what I was talking about in my discussion boards. Spread out your responses to the discussion boards, so you'll get more credit. Papers are long and boring.
Mr. Katz was my favorite teacher of the semester. His class was very informative. He's smart ass but he is also a nice guy who can take a joke. He is very smart and knows what he is teaching. If you enjoy papers instead of assignments and test, take this class. Personally I prefer essays over exams. The midterm and the final were essay questions.
If you like/are good at writing papers instead of daily homework then Katz is a great teacher to take. As someone who is a strong writer, this class wasn't that bad. There is a large "group" project that goes on throughout the semester. He does give pop quizzes so READ when it's assigned. Midterm and final are essays. Offers extra credit.
Dr. Katz is absolutely awesome. I always walked out of his class with my mind spinning. He gives great feedback, and provides plenty of opportunities for the student to excel. Participation makes the class more enjoyable. There was one group project, but it was actually not bad. I wish he taught Honors Humanities II.
Katz is a very smart and interesting teacher. He goes off on a lot of interesting bunny trails, but he failed to get through all of the course material. He's willing to work with you if you put forth the effort to get help. There's a lot of required readings you'll have to do. If you don't read them, you will fail all of the pop quizzes.
He is very self-righteous.
He teaches strictly via lecture. Challenging him will simply irritate him. His tests are designed to reduce internal clues so don't rely on deduction - you must know the material. Attendance, though not mandatory, is incentivized with pop-quizzes. Personally, his class bored me and his attitude angered me. The proud beware.
The best professor at TCC hands down. Not hard, not test heavy its awesome
Unless you have a real interest and understand musical terms do not take this class. The way he grades papers and comments he leaves are pretty rude and unhelpful Lectures are long and drag.
Robert Katz is an amazing professor. He was always accessible by emails and gave great feedback. I definitely improved in my writing taking this class. He's snarky but in a funny way. If you get the chance to take his class, do it!
This professor may well be a good professor in the class room, but I took his class online. You have to earn your grade like any other college class, and he is a tough grader. It's almost the end of the semester and I am still waiting on grades back from 9 things, so I have no clue if I am passing or failing the class. I woldn't take him again.
I have never had to work so hard in my life to earn an A. His tests are extremely difficult and require hours of studying . Unfortunately, there are not many points in this class, so every little assignment matters. Although I learned a lot and really respected him, I probably would not take another course with him.
This is the second course I have taken with Dr. Katz and I don't think hes a bad professor but he does grade things critically. As long as you study his power points and make flash cards over them you'll do just fine. Mostly everything he covers can be found in his power points. There are some quizzes as well; he'll always tell you ahead of time.
Thought this was gonna be an easy A. It was not. The only assignments you do are quizzes, test and papers. If you do bad on a test its almost impossible to get your grade up cause there is not homework to fall back on. The class wouldnt be that back if it was interesting, but I end up falling asleep every time....
The instructor, expects students to turn in work on time. He does not grade until have way through the semester. You won't know if you are passing or progressing. His excuses are life. I turn in my paper on time, so I expect my paper to be graded on time. We turned in 4 projects and took him 3 months to grade and his grading is not efficient at all
American popular music is a good choice for humanities. Easy class if you pay attention. PowerPoints are all available. Textbook was marginally used. Grades are based on 4 exams (60%), 2 papers (35% ) and quizzes(do the math). Showing up keeps you aware of upcoming tests, but won't save your grade if you bomb them. Nothing to sweat if you keep up.
Paying attention to the lectures is very important in the class since almost anything he says is going to be on the listening tests verbatim. Papers and tests are your main grades in this class, so keep up with the lectures. The book isn't necessary despite what he says, since you can listen to the pieces he assigns on sites like Youtube.
Probably the worst class Ive ever taken with the most boring professor Ive ever taken. I never understand a thing when Im in his classes, and 99% of the lectures are boring and just him going on random tangents that dont have anything to do with what were needing to know. I dreaded being in class every day. Do not take this class.
Fell asleep almost every class, but it was alright. Not a lot of assignment, but thats not a good thing with this class. All assignments are papers and hes a hard grader.
I took Prof. Katz for Honors Hum. If you don't show up, you will not pass. Lectures are key to understanding the assignments and he also grades participation. Don't take him if you're looking for a throw away class
I just took his online course for humanities. The class was outlined every week with 2 discussion posts and an essay. The last essay was actually a research project. This class was pretty simple with the workload. He grades tough on his essays. He takes quite a bit to grade papers so you won't be sure if you are passing until the end of the course
The textbook used was an atrocity of an eText which led to an absurd amount of reading each week in order to provide the information needed. Weekly discussions are required and the criteria, "significant contributions," is not what i would classify as clear instruction.
Class is straight forward. Weekly discussion participation required. 3-4 essays plus one 6pg research paper. High expectations on grade criteria. Does not grade in a timely manner. Last day of semester and still have not recieved any grades for completed work since 4th week of school.
Do not take if you can avoid this professor. His online class requires discussion weekly (no big deal), and you must post at least twice, and both posts cannot be under 24 hours of each other. However, his grading criteria is not clear, he has too high of expectations on his grading, and he requires too many essays with too high of expectations.
Professor Katz is a good teacher. His American Popular Music class was enjoyable. Yo do not necessarily need to purchase the textbook but it is good to have if you want A's on the quizzes. He has Kahoot quizzes at the end of each UNIT and those are the main weight of your grade besides the final research paper. Overall the class is not too bad.
Had his class in 2014. He sent me this REALLY mean e-mail. It was so snobby&cold. He shouldn't be able to get away with talking to me like that. It's possible it was someone else e-mailing me from his account or due to a misunderstanding. He seemed passive aggressive. Also, too strict&difficult. A LOT of people have had bad experiences with him.
Liked Mr Katz good enough, nice guy but like the tag says he is a very tough grader. Beware of the Kahoot quizzes, they count for alot of your grade, when you try to beat the clock and get it wrong it hurts. Very tough scorer on the research project. I put a lot in this class and never missed a session and still ended up with my first and only C.
