Tests are impossible and ambigous
bad, cares about his students, no idea how to teach, crazy grading scheme
Needs to become a better teacher
Hard, but I learned a lot. He is intimidating, but he loves what he does.
couldn't help me with problems i had
outdated like commodore 64, not logical, needs to wear a watch, terrible prof
tests are ridiculous, likes to make homework tedious and unhelpful
You need to learn to play his little games.... it's annoying, I know!
STAY AWAY FROM HIS CLASSES! HE IS TERRIBLE!!!
I think I should teach his courses. maybe there'd be a little more education going on. I seriously had to drop the course because I couldn't learn anything from him, I already knew from high school everything that he was trying to teach.
STAY FAR, FAR AWAY!
Extreamly demanding, but he WILL help you become a better student, and he does prepare you for a real carreer in the business world. Be prepared to work.
Dr. Kilmer is one smart cookie, but that does not always translate to being a great communicator. His heart is in teaching and therefore he will challenge you. Ask a lot of questions or you will be left behind!
not fun
Not intouch with whats really important. I was a BIS major and use none of what we learned in the real world. You really have to learn to play his games to get good grades. Avoid!
I don't think I've ever met a man so snide, demeaning, and conniving in my life. He makes you feel like you're the dumbest person on the face of the earth while he's the most godly servant on campus. He's always trying to trick you up.
Kilmer is the cause for myself and others leaving Messiah College. His main goal is to make students get bad grades. My favorite quote of his "I put questions on this test that we never covered because tests are supposed to be learning experiences.
great teacher! extremely helpful! very spproachable and shows that he cares for students. class is intersting and fun. i have not a single complaint. definetly my favorite teacher at messiah. he is great! i would take any class he is teaching!
You have to do EXACTLY what he says. You have to play his games, but then if you do what he says, and set up meetings with him outside of class, you will get a good grade. Overall, teaches you more about real life then just the course description.
This man is too lazy to even teach his own class -- makes his students do all the work of teaching each other. Gives absolutely absurd amounts of work, and even putting in your full effort doesn't guarantee a good grade.
Professor Kilmer is the worst professor i have ever had in my three years of messiah. I would not recommend him to anyone. The fact that a "memorandum" takes longer than the actual assignment is absurd. And that he tests students on material never covered simply for a "learning experience"isnt fai
One word: incompetent. Oh, and three more words: "holier than thou". Everything he does is right, and if he doesn't like you (NOT based on grades), everything you do is wrong.
The guys a lazy moron. He has the students teach the class while he does nothing and says it's "harder for him" Tests are harder than anything and you never have any idea what to study for. Allways seems to answer your questions with a question...???? Avoid at all costs.
His classes are extreamly difficult yes, but everyone calling him lazy is ignorant. Kilmer is easily one of the hardest working profs you will ever find. Expects three times the amount most professors expect out of students, but I assure you, he puts that back into it. TEACHES MORE THAN ACADEMICS
Play his games like using the correct colored folders and meeting with him regularly and you'll do fine, but the class is rediculous. He makes easy material hard. Purposely leaves important bits of material or assignments out so that students would have to come see him.He is devoted to his students
spawn of satan. i mean that in the kindest way. takes a fairly straight forward easy subject simply required to give students an idea of how to use computer applications and makes it into the class from hell. avoid this class like a plague.
Kilmer is a wonderful prof. He makes the class a tad more difficult than it may need to be, but you become a better student overall from taking a class with this man. HINT: visit his office reguarly with questions (he makes assignments hard to understand so that you do this) and he gives you e.c.
I thought everyone was exaggerating until taking his bull-crapped final exam. Half of the material on the test was addressed neither by him nor by the student-taught assignments. His concept of student responsibility goes too far. As if I have time to keep meeting him after his 1.5 hour classes.
If you have to take this class I'm so sorry. He may mean well (I'm not sure), but his ridiculous, unnecessary games are really annoying either way. You will be spending countless evenings doing groupwork. This class is a semester ruin-er. The final..I hope your an Access expert, otherwise..forget it
Very smart but sometimes he was very unclear with how he presented it. If he had Nejmeh's style he would be a B+ teacher
I am told he will likely be my worst professor throughout my messiah years. I have no doubt.
Kilmer is the worst prof anyone will ever take. He teaches class and gives assignments like you have no other classes to take in college. You spend 8 hours a night on h/w only to get a bad grade b/c you didn't do the pointless memoradum right, but you did the assingment right. He sits WAY too close to girls when he talks to them. SO glad I got out!
He is an annoying, pompous, try to be know it all, who thinks he's God's gift to Messiah College business students. Class a bunch of useless busy work and barely learn anything about computers. Makes extra credit seem like a big deal, but his ec pts value very little percentage wise. If you talk to him and play his stupid game you'll survive.
Horrible, that is the one word that sums up his class. He plays games with the students and if they fail he has a huge grin on his face. In my opinion his grading system is way off. He puts way too much weight on the stupid written reports, when your 8 hours of preparation and a solid presentation will get you a low score. AVOID THIS PROF!
your screwed before even entering the classroom...hold out for hope he might not teach it...one of the worst professors to have taught at messiah college
Excelent Professor! Really wants his students to learn the skills they will need in order to get a job and to succeed. He gives you all the info necessary for assignment, READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU START and you'll do great. Willing to help and more available than most profs I've had. Take this professor but be ready to work hard!
I'm taking my 2nd Kilmer class and realizing it's exactly the same as his other class, even though the material is completely different. It's inconsequential to him. He has spent about 10% of the class time regurgitating the textbook; the rest has been either us working in lab or him talking about things that have nothing to do with the course.
nice guy
Do not be scared by all the previous bad ratings he's not that bad. He has calmed down a lot with his grades. He offers a lot of bonus and if you work and learn to know what he wants he will give you a good grade
Wonderful Professor. He cares about his student's education and how much they will actually gain from each lesson. He makes himself available for tutoring assistance, or if a student needs help on a difficult task.
Good guy, good class, good prof!
Prof Kilmer is awesome! Get to know him a little and he will love you. Grading and class is not hard if you do what is asked and study off powerpoints he provides for the quizzes. Attendance is not mandatory and is not necessary if you do things outside of class. I had it at 8 AM and barely went to class because I was caught up in class.
He is a good professor. Can be unclear at times but is always willing to help. His tests can be a little long but they are open textbook. Gives a lot of homework assignments. Expect to spend a decent amount of time outside of class working on HW.
Great Prof, doesn't follow standard educational techniques, is far more relaxed about stuff, which means you learn waaaayyy more.
Nice guy, but he needs to realize how much he frustrates students with his teaching style and meaningless assignments. From finding and listing all the acronyms in a reading to asking how to improve the class every single period, I didn't learn a thing, and my classmates said the same thing. One of the most frustrating/pointless classes I've taken.
The class I took with him was totally useless. I didn't learn anything. If you take a class with him, don't take it very seriously because I failed the final yet I still managed to get a B+ in the class. He gives so many extra credit opportunities that help you do well in the class even if you treat it like a joke.
Last year he gave a 200 question exam.
As long as you are learning. Learning, Learning, Learning without regard for anything else (amount of work given, without any useful lectures, etc.)
Dr. Kilmer is one of the greatest professors I've ever had!!!! His purpose to teach how to use knowledge one receives while in school and use it outside in a real world. It is very sad to see that many students do not understand how lucky they are to have him.
For some reason, Messiah tasked an artificial-intelligence specialist with teaching a 100-level math course. The result was catastrophic. Student-led lectures, rants about the business world, and a frustrating belief that accurate grades ("C's are good!") are more important than GPA-based scholarships made class miserable. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Kilmer today: "When in the business world, how are you going to handle stress? Are you going to go "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" (Shouts loud enough for the entire 3-story building to hear him)... I must say that is the only time I have paid attention in his class all year... Avoid this PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great prof. very wise. taught me a lot of good stuff. Highly recommend him.
This is the worst class with Kilmer that I've taken. And none of the others have been good either. We learn nothing actually related to Artificial Intelligence. We talk about useless probabilities and algorithms that are incorrect. The book says AI on the cover but in reality has nothing to do with artificial intelligence.
Assignments are hard, but professor is there to help! Quizzes are not bad if you do the assignments, pay attention in class, and ask questions when you need clarification. Take notes during class!
Please just read the negative reviews that range from 2002 until now. Nothing has changed since then. Really, I can't express the frustration that this professor has *intentionally* caused me to have. His lectures are completely irrelevant to the large amount of work that we need to complete outside of class.
Lack of clarity, constant conversation during class about himself (often), the mono-tone voice that could put you to sleep, the difficult methodology of instruction and the amount of course work is all overwhelming. As much as I like a good challenge and I appreciate hard work, every class that he instructs is a complete misery.
A very nice guy but not the best professor. His voice will nearly lull you to sleep because of how monotone it is. It is a huge challenge to stay awake no matter how much sleep you've had. He is very confusing and doesn't prepare us adequately for tests. He always asks for feedback but the class doesn't change.
This is the only class I can recommend taking with Kilmer, it's pretty easy and he actually designs the class so that he doesn't have to lecture much, which is beneficial for both you and him. There were no exams when I took it, just daily quizzes so keeping up with the reading was the only critical part of the class.
Dr. Kilmer is extremely difficult and I am only 5 weeks into school. He attempts to solve problems on the board in which he gets confused about and can't get the correct answers. He says HW is graded lightly but he grades for accuracy not completion. Difficult to understand and follow along with. MORE HW in this 107 course than a 300 level course.
Literally hate Dr. Kilmer. He doesn't even know the things he's teaching. 0/10 would not recommend.
Make's too many mistakes in class and doesn't explain concepts well.
His homework is so much harder then it deserves to be for a 107 class, he gets off topic too easily, and he doesn't even teach the material correctly so you have to teach yourself. 0/10 recommend
Of all the teachers & professors I've had from Kindergarten through college, Dr. Kilmer is without a doubt the worst. It is common for deflated students to claim that a teacher "doesn't teach" but I can assure you that Kilmer actually does not teach. He expects you to learn everything yourself and takes points off for the most ridiculous things.
Kilmer is so bad that all you can do is laugh. Looking back, I would legitimately change my major to avoid taking this class with him.
Attendance is mandatory. Unless you want to fail in participation. Write down everything you feel/did in the little blue book "class journal". he is a very tough grader and will take random points off for no reason.
Dr. Kilmer is very underrated. He's caring, accessible outside class, and genuinely wants you to do your best. For those of you taking this for your major and thinking Math 107 is super hard, well, for the record, I'm Studio Art, and I did fine. And of course there's a lot of work that comes with it, it's math and it requires practice.
Professor Kilmer is condescending, confusing, and takes points away constantly. He fails everyone on participation, even for excused absences. The content of math 107 isn't hard, but you'll have to teach yourself. The exam was the hardest I've ever taken. Quizzes and tests are hard with little partial credit. He will ask things he didn't ever teach
Trying to be objective while evaluating Dr. Kilmer is one of the hardest things I've done. People politely have pointed out his issues for years, but he's refused to listen, as he acts like all students are idiots & have no business asking questions. If you don't believe me, wait until you hear his speech about why students shouldn't do class evals
Kilmer's class was the worst academic experience I've ever had. Don't get me wrong, he is a nice guy, but his teaching style is an absolute joke. I cannot explain the number of times I cried while (attempting) to do my homework and how many times I worried about my future in the business department purely because of this man and his class.
Kilmer is a kill joy. CIS 283 was the worst class I've ever taken, ever, and I'm currently in my junior year. Mind you that I have a 3.9 GPA, and this was the hardest CS class I've ever taken. The grading is full of gotchas, the book is awful, and he doesn't actually lecture on the material.
Dr. Kilmer overall is a nice person, and I wouldnt mind having him as a grandfather, but not a teacher. There are many confusions as this material is tough, and his style of teaching leads to more confusion.
This class was really rough. Avoid this prof.
No. Never ever ever ever ever again. Just read everything else, it tells it all.
Dr. Kilmer RUINED my 1st semester of freshman year. Never struggled so much in something. His class was unbelievably hard for a 100 level class, & he was HORRIBLE at teaching & providing help. I lold when he said that he knows how to teach, BIGGEST LIE EVER. Never stayed on topic. Worst man ever. AVOID Kilmer at ALL COSTS. Listen to the reviews.
CIS 283 was the worst CS class I've ever taken. He says he's open, but he shuts down the conversation. He told us not to go on this website to consider the morality of it. I'd invite you to consider the morality of that statement sooner than I'd forgo warning other people. Your reputation is something you've negotiated, paid for, and deserve.
I do not recommend Kilmer at all. He makes you comment on every single assignment whether or not you finished it completely (like, yes I did that is why I'm turning it in). If you don't document this he takes significant points off of your otherwise perfect assignment. He is also very boring, and it's hard to stay awake.
Kilmer is a nice enough man but an AWFUL teacher. I went to office hours to ask for help on a problem, and he told me "I was not going to be able to get that problem right because I didn't have any common sense." Literally. I passed only because I spent hours teaching myself EVERYTHING the week before finals. 1/10 would NOT recommend- take Lehman!!
I cant call Kilmer a teacher because he never taught anything. He showed practice problems but would constantly make errors, even on things as simple as single digit addition. I took Calc in high school so I already knew what to do and it was obvious to me that Kilmer did not. How can someone with such a small mental capacity be so condescending?
Kilmer provides the most useless procedures known to mankind. Every assignment needs a statement saying you completed the assignment. Yes i completed the assignment, that's why I'm turning it in. He takes off numerous points for meaningless things on meaningless homework. The course is so tedious. He also gives you more than you can do.
Literally the worst professor I have ever had in my life. I got a good grade in the class and yet it felt like torture to sit through. His assignments were meaningless and hes just an absolute mess of a teacher. Hes cocky and not at all helpful. He thinks he knows better than everyone else... and yet he simply does not. NEVER take him!!
Terrible, that is the only word to describe him. If I were Thanos, I would collect the stones for the sole reason to snap myself away from having to take that class.
Don't do the mistake I did. I thought to myself "It can't be this bad", but how wrong I was. This class provided no benefit to me. Grading made no sense. 80% is just tests so if you aren't good at taking them, just save yourselves. He himself stated he wouldn't be able to listen to himself teach. If that doesn't say anything, I don't know what does
All the bad previous reviews are here for a reason. He fails you if you make tiny little mistakes- and it's a GenEd class. Once I asked him for help and he told me to ask each student in the class before I can bother him. Well, don't you get paid to help students? The only professor whose classes I missed because I felt miserable and uncomfortable
He's an awful professor. This class was supposed to be an easy one that counted for the Math credit, but it was horribly hard and incredibly useless. You have to sweat through everything and, even if by the time you get to finals week you have a 98, the THREE different final tests will drag your grade down. It's an awful class, don't take it!
