Great guy lots of clear notes... big bark no bite
He made my freshman history experience amazing. What I know or remember in history, I owe it to this professor. He clearly loves his subject and doesn't expect his students to love history, but appreciate it.

History with LaSota is an experience! Tests are difficult, but very fair, fantastic lectures, great research assignments, and he is always willing to help the "needy". A real world TRIP!
I can still list and explain the causes of the fall of the Roman empire. This speaks for itself.
I did not like him that much. He was definetely tough, but not really clear. I could never follow him. I do agree that he is very helpful, and I appreciated taking history with him. Expect to study a lot!
Professor LaSorta is very hard but he has a great method of teaching & you can learn a lot in his class.
prof. lasota is a smart guy, yet very odd. i found his his. of the american family to be unclear and at times frusterating b/c you dont really feel you are learning much about the american family. while nice, this guy sticks to his guns and grades hard.
I have to say that Professor Robert Lasota has been an inspiration in my life. His frequent idioms, and references to the true meaning of life resonate in my mind to this very day - even though I took his classes nearly 4 years ago. Thank you Prof. L.!!!
STOP IT... enough said.
A great professor. Very available to his students when they come to his office. P.S. learn those machiavellian tennents !!

he has a good way of teaching..huge fan.
HILLARIOUS. His favorite phrases - "I think I'm gonna throw up!" or "Stop it!" He has a wonderful way of teaching, I would love to take a class with him again. He teaches about history AND life, so that is good. Please take a class with this man, he is wonderful.
This guy is awsome. I really can't think of many professors that can teach you so much, both about the class your taking, and about life as well. I would reccomend him to anyone that needs a history class.
hard. but i learned a lot from him. amazing teacher!
He tends to go on and on and on....
lecture only class...not willing to use a range of teaching methods...if you didn't give every single detail on a test then you get no credit for any of the details that you gave...some people love him and some people can't stand him
Great teacher tough but you learn a lot Generous grader

"i think im gonna throw up..." "stop it" thats what he says. i was frightened by his loud voice as a freshman. but his unique way of lecturing is very captivating. as i look back a good teacher. i got an A
I had him for history of the american family and loved his teaching style so much I took him again for World Civ. He is hilarious!! He might seem strange/confusing to some people, but I think you have to get used to his dry/sarcastic humor. If you pay attention to what hes saying, you learn a lot! "STOP IT, im gonna be sick" haha Lasota is the man
kinda freaked me out 1st semester freshman year, then 2nd semester i took civ II and i understood him more, hes funny. "STOP IT!" "I THINK I'M GONNA THROW UP" "IF I'M GONNA WALK THROUGH THAT DOOR, THEN I'M GONNA WALK THROUGH THAT DOOR"
Great guy, long lecutres, would not take anyone different...I guess im just a Tootsie Roller
Loved this guy! he's hilarious! he tries to scare everyone off the first day but don't believe him! he makes jokes all the time and is actually interesting to listen to. i hate history, but i very much enjoyed his class. his tests aren't too bad either.. he doesnt make you know dates and is generous with points. love him! :o)
Digresses A LOT. It's kind of annoying.
one of the best professors at ssc. he was a great teacher, i learned so much and enjoyed the class at the same time. just take and do the readings and you will be fine. its an easy A and he grades beyond fairly.
Was one of my favorite professors in the college. Had a great sense of humor, in fact, I use many of his quotes and stories in my classes now, giving him full credit of course. I took him for two classes and enjoyed every minute of every one. I would recommend if you have a good sense of humor and can take his style, it is just like mine now.
Pedantic, rambling windbag. Condescending to his students, frequently historically inaccurate, and incapable of distinguishing between his own opinion and relevant historical fact. I come to class to learn about history, not why you dislike George Bush. I hate him too, can we move on?
Love him--Commanding presence with a soft heart. Clearly loves his subject. Pay attention and ask for help when you need it and you will learn a lot from him. I was glad to take history again and he made it even more a pleasure. ARE YOU OK?
YOU MUST GO TO EVERY CLASS AND TAKE EXTENSIVE NOTES!!! He is not clear about what will be on exams, gives a LOT of notes (most are unnecessary) and simply lectures the ENTIRE class from minute 1 to minute 50. A bit of a tough grader, but nice guy outside of class
He has no concept of teaching. He is rude, political and opinionated. Most of all, he is shovenistic and calls his students stupid. Not for people who would like to stay sane throughout the semester.
Unreal-I had this guy 30 years ago. He is left of left and historically inaccurate in his rantings. Do not bother him with the facts of an argument - he knows what he likes and the facts matter not! If you want to learn left wing politics and rantings, take him. If you want to learn history from an enlightened and objective source - AVOID HIM!!!!!!
he blows! he expects you to know everything that happens in a freaking time period. Honestly i got a question that said name everything that happened in WW2. Class is time consuming you have to read the book from cover to cover to pass
I completely disagree with the comments. LaSota is completely fair and extremely helpful! Sure he's a lil crazy but it makes the class all the more interesting. the tests are IDs and 3 essays, and he GIVES you the answers. just take notes and study!
the epitome of a good professor. you must take notes , go to class, and read the book. on the other hand, his lectures are entirely intellectual and pertain greatly to modern life. he does say "stop it" a lot, and it shows his disgust towards the topic, but he's passionate about the material, which contributes to wanting to learn the material:):):)
Very opinionated and sometimes rude. if you take notes and pay attention you will do well. he picks favorites.
He is very hard to follow. You need to listen him carefully every second. He discuss about the most important cases in US History. He picks one that he likes and talk about for 2 classes. Nothing related with HIS 102. He talks about a lot of things those arent related with HIS 102. Plenty of writing and listening. Good luck.
Be really careful about takign this guy. I took him as my first college course and I was so scared that the rest of school would be like a Lasota class. I'm sad to say I'll remember him in a bad way. Don't take him withdraw if you can. Everything with this guy is black and white, no in between. I got a B but I worked quite hard, not a good time
STOP YOUR WHINING!!! He was by far the best I had. Listen to his note taking techinques and his class will be a breeze. The Prince is a great book, and if it was not for his class, I KNOW I never would have just read it. He loves to say what does this have to do with the price of fish. Will send your exam to you if you want. VERY EASY
LaSota is one of my favorite professors at Salem State. He is not an easy professor if you are wondering whether you can get an easy A or not. Because he is fond of psychology, I trust he is one of the most caring and loving professors at SSC and he will do everything to help you with any issues you might have, let these be class related or not.
Awful!!!!!!
He makes you think outside the box but is TOTALLY rude, weird and is a scatterbrain. VERY DISORGANIZED!!!! and does not follow the syllabus a bit. Be careful. it is no easy ride.
I'm a graduate of the class of '00 & stumbled across this website just tonight. Anyway, 1st class, he went on some tirade about God knows what. The next class the # of students dropped by 1/2! He said that "was his plan" b/c he preferred smaller classes - he's a riot. His tough look is a facade. Get to know him you won't regret it!
Mr LaSota is perhaps one of the most outstanding teacher in my experience at Salem State. Very passionate about truth, and presents everything very methodically. No, he is not a drive by A,but take good notes, dont miss class, and anything he recommends you to do,suggest you doit. Heis structured to make you think, soapply yourself. would take again
guy is crazy. can't stay on one topic at alll..... he loves rambling on about off topic ideas. very hard to follow. be prepared to take "ample amount" of notes. didnt like him. essay was wicked hard. if you like Niccollo machievelli then your in the clear... GOOD LUCK
very hard in lecture because he jumps around. make sure you take good notes, things you think are irrelevant appear on you midterm! dont skip class, it'll screw you over. he doesnt assign work, only one paper. work hard on it and take good notes. he is willing to help you in office hours. take advantage! he looks after your best interests
Very intimating person but once you break the barrior he's not bad to talk too. Grade is based on paper, midterm, and final so you can not mess up on anything. He jumps from subject to subject and is very unclear about what he's says. He expects you to know alot before taking the class. I would not recommend taking this class.
He was awful and useless talked about plato and that was it
I don't know what everyone is talking about with all the negative comments. Yes, he does go off topic alot..however, he is an awesome guy. I don't think I have ever met a professor who cares about his students doing well as much as he does. As long as you show you care, he is extremely understanding and very supportive. I loved having him
I thought LaSota was a horrible teacher, to put it nicely. He wasn't helpful at all and at times, got completely off track and taught useless information. I learned nothing from his course. Period.
He is very ignorant, always yelling and just plain rude. A lot of mindless rambling and teaching yourself the lessons. I would not suggest this class to anyone.
Prof. LaSota is a great teacher! He is very helpful and has a nice personality. He's willing to do anything if you show him you care. You have to put in the work, but he rewards it.
Stay away from this teacher. Boring, rude, and irritating as heck. He is weird guy and has always been a bad teacher. My dad had him in the 80s and I had him two years ago. AWFUL teacher.
If you don't attend class regularly, your grade will reflect that. He expects a lot from his students. Take LOTS of notes, study them, and you'll do fine. DO NOT leave studying, reading, and book reviews to the last minute or you will receive a poor grade. He comes off intimidating, but he's a nice guy. His office door is always open.
Professor Lasota is definitely a tough teacher but I learned A LOT from his World History class. Attending class and taking notes is key. Anyone that says he is mean or unreasonable just didn't want to put in the work. He's a great guy.
Wow this guy loves to hear him talk... He's blabs on and on about nonsense... Nothing he says fits into subject matter, he yells, he rude, offensive and redundant.. His class is torture and a waste of money!!
he comes off being very hard but then its not that bad, but he doesnt grade very good, it 30% for Research paper, 35% midterm and 35% final! not easyy..
I barely missed any classes and I took really detailed notes, and I got an A. Easy as that. I took him again for History of the American Family, which is an awesome course. The negative comments on here are unfounded. He's a caring guy who actually cares about his subject as well as his students. Definitely take him, and talk to him. He's great.
He is the greatest college professor I have ever had. I took History of the American Family and I learned alot about myself as well as social issues in family settings. He can be serious but also funny. I still go back to visit him sometimes. I would absolutely recommend him.
the best teacher ever. when he explains the material it make u feel you were there. i would recommend every to take a history 101 or 102 at least one course with him.
Loved his class!! He was helpful. I would definitely recommend this teacher.
HORRRRRRIIIBBBLLLE.
Professor Lasota is a caring guy but completely scatterbrained. He goes off topic all the time. I had a hard time following what he was even talking about. Tests are extremely hard to study for because you have to study everything. No idea what you are going to be tested on. I studied for a long time and still did not do well on the exam.
Lasota is hardest teacher ever gives awful nots scattered material. History used to be my favorite subject AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Do not listen to people saying he is great avoid avoid avoid.
He rambles on, you dont know exatly what hes ever trying to get across. Everything he says is in similes or metaphors he never actually tells you facts. Talks more about how hes going to teach you than actually teaching you. A nice guy but a ridiculous teacher.
LaSota's method is 1 research paper and 2 exams for grades during the semester. I did well by studying the "GOOD QUESTION" material he spoke of in class, and wrote the paper to his specifications. HINT:Be creative with Machiavelli! See his office for questions you may have about a test or paper and he will let you know what he is looking for in a A
Not an easy class at all!! It feels like no matter how much you've studied he doesn't make you to reach high grades. It's a lot of homework , it's challenging. But at the end everybody learned a lot of history with this professor.
TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lots of reading, not taking ect. Once you find a routine and learn how he tests your all set. I took him for two history courses and got two A's, I am not a history buff. Following him can be hard sometimes but again you get used to how he leaves and comes back to different subjects. Just show up.
First day of class he had a very angry & negative attitude. He also tends to repeat stories (like the Tootsie Roller story) more than once because he doesn't remember what he's said. Rambles a lot. Asked for longer exam essays, but there wasn't nearly enough time to give that much handwritten information. Definitely AVOID if you like your high GPA.
He's very misunderstood but if you meet with him you'll see that he wants you to do good in class. He answers all your questions and helps if your having trouble with other classes. He is a really great teacher and his teaching style allows you to remember the material for years to come. His asiignments are readings, 2 tests, & 1 research paper.
the worst. he is not helpful and acts like a crazy man rambling the whole time. He teaches you nothing and you have to learn everything by yourself for the final and midterm. he is a gpa killer.
I honestly enjoyed his class. He is severely misunderstood; go to his office hours, he will answer ALL questions you have. I was afraid of him at first, but he is one of the better professors I've had at Salem State. He's actually a pretty funny guy.
Best possible teacher there. He makes you work. But what you produce will be the work that you are most proud of. Many students do not get him. He's definitely meant for the advanced student, as his words, thoughts and ideas all seem to be pregnant with what he's really trying to tell you. I have nothing but the utmost respect for him. Glad we met
He is very funny and old. His class is hard because he only has 3 assignments that are used for final grades. A midterm, Final, & a 7-12 page research paper that each weigh between 30-35% of your grade. It is important to take detailed notes and study the lectures.
Very intelligent professor, but much of his material is dated. Many of what he refers to as "recent" studies date back to the '70's. He did include some interesting books, and we read then and had to review them but he never went into relevance or tried to link them to the subject matter we were studying. This class needs an update.
Worst teacher I've ever had! Rude, rambling and overall a pretty disheartening professor. I felt uncomfortable asking any questions, and his whole demeanor was passive-aggressive and demeaning. Stay away from him and his class! He will make history your least favorite class.
GO TO CLASS!! Everything he talks about has a purpose! Attendance isn't mandatory but that doesn't mean skip! Go to class, take good notes (literally write everything he says down)! Correct him if he starts going over things! Pay attention to his stories and take out the details! Be wicked creative with your essay..oh and GO TO CLASSS!!!
GO TO CLASS!!! If you want to pass his classes, go to class and take notes on everything he says. Use a laptop and just start typing. visit during his office hours and show interest. You will eventually appreciate his teaching style.
Amazing and helpful professor if you want to learn. Hard class but you will learn a lot. Visit him often and he will remember you and be there for you in any possible way. I recommend it for any class, be ready to learn, laugh and work..
He's a force to be reckoned with. Old fashioned teaching style. There's 3 quizzes,a midterm, and a final, all essay questions. He also assigns books to read that you'll write "book reviews" on(I had 2 of them). However, I learned more than I ever expected to. If you pay attention, read the books, and STUDY, you'll be just fine!
I would agree with other comments that he is a tough, old school professor. But there is a reason he is still around. He is a very good professor. His class was tough, but attend all the classes and take good notes, and you will do well. A lot of essay questions. Had an issue taking one test, and he was very accommodating. I recommend him.
Worst teacher I have ever had in 10 years of school. So rude, dismissive and scattered. SSU will be a much better school once he retires. There are really great professors at SSU, including some really amazing history professors. Take the class with anyone else, trust me.
HORRIBLE. So horrible. He locks the door "5 mins after class starts" no. He actually starts class 10mins early and locks the door 5mins early. Gives you a HUGE paper worth about 40% of your grade the second day then tells you to ask your Q's now because he won't be answering anymore after that point. If you have him, drop him. Unless you want an F
Loved his class! He is very funny! If you study hard, you will be fine!
Only assignments given: Research paper, midterm, and final. Talks all class and I wouldnt suggest skipping class because everything he talks about is on midterm and Final. Take down mostly everything he says and don't worry no understand what is going on in class, too. Get a study group for this class!
Yes he is stubborn, yes he is old, and yes he is opinionated. However he is an absolutely awesome professor! His classes consist of him lecturing for about 30 minutes and then a film or visual as he calls them and that after 3 or so you write a short three paged paper. You have a couple book reports to do and a mid term and final. Awesome guy.
Honestly one of the rudest people I have ever met in my life. He talks down to the class a lot. Personally being a history major I do not like to be talked down to on a subject that I am passionate about. I do not recommend him at all, if you get him transfer out ASAP!
So lectures are important because attendance is part of the grade. You read around three books during school than write a report on them. There are guess speakers in class. He is hard to understand when speaking but an easy grader on papers and test. In office hours he gives you tips on the books, you get to know him a bit, hes an intelligent man.
He is a good professor he knows his stuff but he talks down to his students which made me really dislike him. He didn't show me any respect at all by missing just two classes and called me out on in front of the whole class.
I had him as a Professor in 1996! It was my freshman year at Salem State College. To this day, he's the best teacher I've ever had. He teaches history from a Philosophical Perspective. He truly opened my mind to think more critically about historical and present-day issues. To this day, I draw inspiration from what I learned
I had Lasota a few semesters ago and his class was horrible. He was unorganized and rambled in class. He was arrogant and would be rude to students. Within a few weeks of the semester, half of the people in the room dropped the class. This was supposed to be a World History Class but since Lasota loved Italy so much, that's all we talked about.
The first class; he steps up on his desk and yells Are you ready to go out on the street and die for your country? He steps down, and says by the end of this semester, you will be. Then proceeds to discuss the French Revolution. We read the Communist Manifesto and The Prince I felt so lucky to be part of his class, to read those books.
