Good professor, but you do have to do some work within the class.
Unreasonable-Really loves to give himself a pat on the back
Good man, great teacher. Funny. If you can read, take him
Very Disapointing;Came highly recommended-a real phony.
The most gifted teacher in the department.
Big Shout's Out's to Phil of Lit!
VERY VERY easy, just need good notes in class, write what he is saying word for word, easy readings, but dont have to really pay attention to those, easy essays lots of extra credits. he talks fast and moves around a lot in class thou. Crazy about everyt
He is wonderful. Easy essays, the tests are ok, and he is very helpfull and understanding. Many chances for extra credit. Very clear when speaking, and cares for his students.
He repeats things over and over again in class, this is good because the information sticks in your head and is important to his tests. He is always willing to help his students. He is not out to fail anyone. Plenty of extra-credit opportunities!
Very easy. His tests are a little tricky but the essays are easy. LOTS of extra credit. It should be an easy A
woah, real tough course....unreasonable workload, nice guy, smart, but unfair tests, too many papers(10)
I've had him for problem of God, and PHilosophy of LIterature. Best human being ever. His 10 papers are one page long, each. Take any class with him, he's great.
TAKE THIS MAN!!!!
he's great! go sartre!
He was ok. Not one of the best professors I had but he was ok.
Such a nice guy, and his lectures are so clear and interesting, plus his tests and grading are very fair
ALL UPPER LEVEL COURSES WITH LAUDER ARE HARD. LOWER COURSES ARE EASY
Very sweet man. very helpful, although difficult subject matter. Good sense of humor, keeps class interesting.
HE is the man his essays are all one page and all what you think. also the book are all what what you think therefore u will never have to read them, you might have to study for the tests though, i got a c and i never studies so its up to you.
Well, there is so much to say about Fr. Lauder. He likes movies alot. All his classes are exactly the same. But he is ok at what he does
father lauder is one of the best professors i've taken at st. johns. the material is a bit difficult, but he is willing to answer any questions you may have. funny guy, too.
LOVE HIM!!!! THANX FOR EVERYTHING!!
Hes a complete mess, he gets confused, and ends up arguing with himself (not on purpose) and then agrees with himself later on. However, if you study his babble, and read the books, you will be fine. He is incredibly nice, which makes it bearable.
This professor is anything but a mess! He is very helpful to his students and makes himself available at anytime. If you do your work you will pass and if you make an effort you'll get an A.
Nice guy, tough class... a lot of readings/papers
Fun and interesting professor, but somewhat confusing. The pace of the class is fast, and some potentially very interesting material is often glazed over without much attention. His tests are essay and usually somewhat difficult. However, he is very nice and a lot of fun. Just be sure to take good notes and pay attention.
Great professor, over all. Took 3 courses with him - problem of god, catholic novel, & personalism. They're all pretty much the same course because he tends to repeat things. He does seem to be a little confusing at times, but he is more than willing to listen and answer your questions. His exams are essay, and depending on the class, you'll have small assignments due every other week or so, but nothing too difficult. He loves movies, books, plays, etc. so you'll have to listen to him talk about it
Number 5 probaly did bad in Father's class or did not take the time to sit with Father and discuss their problems so basically their judgements on him are totally false and they need to realize theya are in college and STOP COMPLAINING FOR THEIR SCREW UPS!!!
Very interesting teacher, the course is called "Philosophy of man" but it should be called "philosophy of robert lauder." He just teaches what his own philosophy and a lot about love. The tests are long answer essays and are very difficult. There is about a paper a week with a lot of reading. Check out your options before you take him.
This class requires lots of reading. However, if you do the readings, the tests are a piece of cake. You have to do a 1 page review sheet for each book, which is subjective. He doesn't actually grade them; you get credit just for turning them in.
The best teacher ever. His lectures are mesmerizing. I took him for 3 different classes, on purpose. Yes you do a lot of reading but what you learn will live with you. I'd love to sit in on his lectures now!
Intelligent, funny, nice professor. Even though he is a priest, he does not show any bias to the theists or unbias to the atheists. Take him and you will learn a great deal. Short QACI things that are less than a page (or he takes points off). Not easy but not difficult, possible to obtain A. Course can be complicated but is always interesting.
Corny jokes, nice to everyone even atheists, but makes you feel like a moron if you disagree with him. Not allowed to wear hats, stupid prayer to start class, I did not get below a B on any test or fail to turn in a QACI yet I still got a bad grade due to being absent, so go to class. If you dont mind keeping ur opinion 2 urself its a fine class
I took him for philosophy of lit, problem of God, and existentialism. Father Lauder is a great professor at St. John's. He does teach you the heart of his philosophy, but as someone said before, his lectures are mesmerizing. I got 3 A's in all 3 courses. Its not doing work, its basically finding hidden treasure.
As a person, he is an amazing man. The class asks little of you, simply reading but the books that you will be reading -- you will not mind. He's an incredible man and keeps you interested beyond where you think you could be interested. I would definitely take him. You'll love him.
Amazing man. He is not only a very nice person but an excellent teacher to boot. You will not only learn a great deal from him but you will also expand your thinking. Existentialism can be tough (not too tough, though) but it is well worth it. No papers, just four tests (all essay) and three very small quizzes. Take him for a great experience.
Simply put, FANTASTIC. I've taken him for two classes thus far. His Personalism course changed my life--yes, it's that good. Attendance is a must but is easy as the classes are incredibly stimulating. Attendance also helps you write QACIs (if required) and understand the reading. Check out his extra curricular film series too! A MUST TAKE!
Great professor, you will really learn alot. he makes alot of jokes, explains everything really well just pay attention and your 10 ONE PAGE papers will be really easy
My experience with him was horrible. He rushes everything. Everything is a joke to him and he seems to think that anyone who is not Caucasian looks alike. He doesn't go over key points and his tests are very vague. I'm Catholic and after taking his course I am considering changing my religion. He is the most self-centered priest I ever met.
good guy. sometimes unclear but just try to comprehend the books you read and participate and you'll be fine.
I took personalism. Great professor! The QACI's were a bit annoying. (1 page paper a week) but they were EXTREMELY helpful for the exams! Definitely ask questions and speak up!
Fr. Lauder is an excellent professor. His class was very interesting. Some of the topics covered were very engaging and interesting; others were not. He gave us four papers, which counted as two grades, and three tests for the semester. If you study and take good notes, this class is easy. Great professor; highly recommended
i had him early in the morning and he kept me up most of the time, he's very passionate and he loves to make jokes. he gives plenty of time for tests and writing assignments... he's a nice grader and a great teacher
As a honors class, it wasn't too bad. You have to listen in class and read the books (or at least skim it to get the basics down) in order to do well. He may be a bit unclear at times though, but is willing to explain if you ask him.
I love Father Lauder. I took him for intro to philosophy and fell in love with the subject. I had him for 4 more classes and ended up graduating with a BA in Philosophy. The trick with Father Lauder is to speak up if you don't get it. He moves quickly but will slow down to explain if you just ask. Do the rreadings and assignments and you'll be fin
Prof is passionate about the subject and a tremendously kind & funny man. He defines, differentiates, and defends his version of existentialism very clearly and well. He is open minded, but so firmly rooted in Platonist/Thomistic theory that questions from a post-structuralist approach usually yield unsatisfying results.
He makes this course more about his philosophy than anything else. hes very difficult to understand at times. hard tests I sincerely did not like him as a professor. hes a great, caring person though. never cancelled class except for a death of a family friend he had to say mass at. id try to avoid him if i were you
He is my favorite professor. He sincerely wants you to succeed, and he truly loves what he is teaching. His enthusiasm is infectious. Plus, he's a very fair grader of both papers and tests.
He is an excellent professor with good humor. I got B- for midterm, but i got a A for final grade. He gives you extra credits for test grades. He speaks fast but repeats main points again and again. His tests are not that hard. You can learn something in his class. I recommend this course. It's an essay A class as long as you review the notes.
He is an amazing person, very friendly, funny, animated at times lol, but very caring and truly just wants all his students to get an A. His classes are very interesting! I would take him again if I could!
He is rather conceited, spent half the semester teaching us HIS philosophy and requiring us to know it. Makes you buy like 10 books, a lot of essays, and hard tests. Do not take him if you can avoid it.
Extremely fun and kind man. We cover a lot of grounds from Socrates to modern philosophers. Yes I lamented about having to learn his philosophy too, til I've read his book, which turned out to be quite interesting. A philosophy of love that you'd want to live by.
class drags sometimes but fr. lauder is funny and has a lot of stories which makes class interesting. there are a lot of short (1-2 page) papers. not too harsh of a grader. pay attention and take good notes and youll get an A. what he says in class is exactly what is on the test.
Great teacher. The class doesn't feel like a drag. There are A LOT of short essays (1-2 pages) on books he assigns. A lot of reading is needed for this class but if you pay attention in class and take notes on what he says , you should do fine.
A lot of reading is required for this class, but if you actually do the reading, go to class, and take decent notes you should do fine. He is a fair grader but his tests are not the easiest. He is a very passionate person and I have no trouble staying up in class. Would definitely take him again if I could even though its not an easy A
I would easily say one of the best professors at St. John's. His class in Existentialism literally changed my life. He is able to explain hard concepts in an understandable way! He is also hilarious, with several stories and jokes to complement his teaching. You do need to do the reading, pay attention, and take notes. (It is college!) TAKE HIM!
Passionate about the topic, but sounds like he rambles a lot. Unorganized notes and lectures a lottt. Take good notes though and memorize them for the test, which are not easy, but do-able. Papers are reflections that are very easy. Class is very boring, fell asleep a lot, but TAKE NOTES and memorize for TESTS. Doesn't let you use laptops too...
I would avoid if possible. He was passionate about the course, but when asked a question he would use a confusing, roundabout way to answer and even when asked to clarify his explanation, he couldn't. Takes notes, memorize for tests. He does want to help, and offers many extra credit possibilities.
Professor Lauder is very passionate about philosophy. However, he speaks very fast which makes it difficult to take notes. He is very helpful if you ask questions but he is not always straightforward when answering them. There are four papers, three tests, and extra credit opportunities. Definitely not an easy A.
Ok, so I pretty much committed academic suicide when I took his lvl 3 class, but I was running out of options for classes to take so late in the registration process. I thought he's a better person than professor. His tests are hard, doesn't respond to emails quickly...I had better PHI profs.
He's a very nice and understanding man, but his teaching style just did not work for me. He bounces back very often between the philosopher's philosophy and his own opinion on it. Needs a powerpoint or worksheet of key facts; instead we're all trying to decipher meaning out of his class ramblings before the test.
He's such a nice and down to earth man. His class isn't hard, yet its not an easy A. You have to work for it, and he does speak fast and doesn't give you a powerpoint or anything to go off of.
I don't know what everyone is saying. Thee tests are easy and he is a great professor. He is nice and a easy grader. The papers are also easy and they are graded easy.
I really liked Lauder!! If you do the work for this class and go over your notes well before a test you're good. You do have to listen to his philosophy tho which is my biggest complaint but you could definitely do worse. I'd take him for my next philosophy
you have to go to each lecture, and he talks really fast but if you ask him to slow down he will. if you participate in class you will most likely get better grades on the essays. you won't use every book on his list so do not buy all of them before coming to class.
Happiest man. 2 tests and then a final. Final weighs the same as tests. 4, 700-1000 word papers on good books. AS-L is optional. Never finished reading a whole book, you only need to know the gist. Make sure your papers are your opinions. Memorize things to regurgitate on test essays. Overall good class, you may need to work just a tad for the A.
he is a great philosophy, i love his course, however, i believe that if you want to take his course, you better have some personal experience to understand or not you don't even understand what he taking. or you need to have strong memory to remember everything he says. overall, he is a good professor want you to pass his course.
What can I say, he's a decent teacher and I believe he tries to make the material easy to understand. He may not be my favorite professor but definitely not my worst. We had 10 easy assignments, follow the instructions word for word if you was 10/10. We had 3 exams, all essay formed. TAKE NOTES
Father Lauder was a great professor and he made philosophy very interesting would highly recommend this professor for your first philosophy class. We had to read books that were very interesting and write a report on it which was easy and the tests were easy as long as you pay attention. I loved this class.
Passionate about the subject however lectures do not match up w/ exams. Adds questions that weren't discussed in class and doesn't believe in partial credit on exams. Seminarians and students who had him previously for core classes are at an advantage. Would've dropped like the other students but needed an elective to graduate. Brought down GPA.
Great guy who wants his students to succeed. He is not really up with the times and class can get a little unorganized at times. That being said, hes a great professor and Im glad I took him for my first philosophy. 4/5 papers and three tests including the final. The papers total grades count as 2 test grades. Very fair grades. Take him.
He is really passionate about philosophy, but not the best at communicating it. He jumps between philosophers so you have to pay attention in class and take notes. Just ask him to slow down and explain a topic you don't understand. Three exams with true/false, short answers, and essays. The papers and extra credit can help your grade a lot.
Professor Lauder is a great person, but his lectures can either bore you or make you really confused. Philosophy is a hard topic to grasp but if you read the material and take good notes then you should be fine. Another thing to keep in mind is that the professor sometimes likes to ramble so make sure you ask him for some clarification!
DO NOT TAKE BOB LAUDER. He is the WORST professor Ive ever had. NOTHING in his class makes sense.
Best Philosophy Professor I've every had. He is a genius. Show up, participate in class, turn in the papers (which are literally 5 sentences), and you will pass easily.
Bob Lauder is the man. This guy is not only wicked smart, but also a comedic genius. Haters gonna hate on my boy, but shame on them because they obviously have no sense in education or in comedy, and either do you if you don't take any of his classes. Take Bob Lauder. He changed the way I see things and the way I see life. Bless up to Bob Lauder
A really great man and Priest. Truly loves what he does and will work so hard not only for you to do well but even so you understand. Says Mass daily on campus which is really cool. Class is moderate as philosophy is hard, but he does his best so you get it.
Fr. Lauder is amazing. Made PHI easy for me. I would take again!
Most confusing guy and class ever. He is confused when people ask question, NOTES ARE A DISASTER, talks and talks forever about stuff that doesn't even make sense, confused how he grades his papers and test suck. He needs to be more clear about a lot of things.
An absolute gem at St. Johns. Makes philosophy clear cut and explains everything. Holy Priest and a guiding man from the pulpit and from the classroom.
An amazing person, this is a very hard topic but he will guide you. Has single handily helped me to understand Philosophy and has brought me back my Catholic faith!
His writing on the board is a complete mess and hes super confusing he also make you buy a book he wrote and write a paper on it.
Father Lauder is an absolute sweetheart. He is very caring and tries his best to keep his lectures light hearted. The books we read were very inspirational. My two complaints is that he is very picky when grading papers and his notes are a mess, but overall easy A if some effort is put in.
This professor is honestly thy best. If you have the opportunity to take him please do. He's very easygoing and down to earth. He cares about his students and likes to hear your opinions.
He is a priest so many of his good reviews were done by Catholics who probably felt like they had to. He is nice however, that isn't enough. He is A MESS he goes all over the place and even confuses himself, reading and copying from the board is impossible. The books he assigns aren't bad and his papers are fairly easy but GOOD LUCK on his exams.
Father Robert Lauder is a great professor! He is passionate about teaching and he truly cares and values your opinions. The only complaint I would have about him is that his lectures and notes are a bit messy. Otherwise, his assignments and papers are short and easy. An easy A with very minimal effort!
Best prof at St. John's!
fr. lauder is a really nice guy, but he tends to get off topic a lot. the papers are just your opinions on the books. you dont even need to buy all the books, just look them up. you only need to buy his book to write the last paper. if you write enough detail in the papers, he'll give you a 100. hand in all your papers on time and you'll get an A
I fell for the good reviews on here and arrived to a rude awakening. He has 0 coordination with anything. He puts too much emphasis on religion in a PHI course because he's a priest. Avoid at all costs unless you want to hear the same 4 stories every class
He is the best prof. and teacher I have ever had. He is a dedicated priest that goes above and beyond to help his students. Most PHI profs at SJU use Augustine, and Aquinas to prove Catholic points, Fr. Lauder uses them but also uses many non Christian and Catholics to prove the faith. He is a genius.
Respectable man. Is a priest, talks a lot about religion for a Philosophy course. Grade is based off of essays and tests. Essay's are just your own thoughts. Personally I have never bought a book and just looked up quotes online. If you talk about God and religion you can get an easy 100. The tests are based off his lectures and include an essay
You have to write a few essays on the books assigned in the syllabus. One essay is on his book. His lecture can be much at times, but they are pretty insightful if you take the time to think. He does have a few stories he repeats, but that is not a big deal. He cares when he teaches and will take one day before the exam to review the material.
The class consists of four papers and two exams (the midterm and the final). The papers were easy; you don't even have to read the books, you could use online summaries. The tests are incredibly difficult: 40-50 true or false questions, followed by a lot of writing. Nearly everyone cheated on the final since it was that hard.
This man is an absolute genius. The lectures are dense and abstract, but if you take notes and pay attention you will do fine. A couple of papers, and two exams. The test is hard, but if you do study you will be fine. Be careful he walks up and down the aisles when he gives his tests. Father Lauder is also a great man and a great priest.
Father Lauder is a brilliant man and his thoughts are like liquid gold in my opinion. However, he is rather up in age and is not tech savvy at all. There is no canvas page, and frankly he doesn't respond to emails. He also can't hear to well and gets side tracked quite often. Despite this, I still learned a lot. 5 easy essays and 2 tests.
Lauder is a great professor. I admire his papers, which are based off the books he expects us to buy for the class. He does ramble off topic, so I recommend that you try and pay attention to take some notes down. The notes make sense at the start of the semester but towards the end, its rather questionable. I wouldn't take him again, personally.
I really like him. He was a very happy, nice, and reasonable guy. Taught the class very well. As long as you show up to class, take good notes, and study them, you should do good. There is a Midterm, Final, and 5 essays. The essays are each out of 20 and at the end, he adds them up and makes it worth 2 test grades. Not a harsh grader on them.
Fr. Lauder is a wholesome guy and very understanding. The 5 essays are light work and he basically gives out 100s for anything with an ounce of effort. His lectures can be boring and he often repeats the same stories (over and over again) but a pretty easy A for an honors class
Nice professor, make sure to listen and take notes because he doesn't use canvas or any presentations. He gets repetitive sometimes, but is easy to understand and only assigns five papers for the entire semester (max 700 words each). Just stay on top of the readings and take notes, and you'll get a good grade.
I would not recommend this class to anyone. We were given a homework assignment to read a whole 240 page book, not one question was on the exam relating to it. It is lecture heavy, extremely hard to stay focused. No canvas page which is not good. Such a nice guy but the class is impossible.
Fr. Lauder is a great person and you can tell he truly cares about what he teaches and his students. On the other hand, his class is HARD. He recently changed from a full essay course to an ONLY test course. By this I mean your WHOLE grade is his very hard exams and an optional extra credit assignment. Also, he has no notes.
Although this professor was nice and had good intentions he could not teach. There was not one moment of the class where I knew what we were learning. He is never clear on instructions. He is a very fast speaker and does not write down what he is saying so if you're taking notes on paper good luck keeping up. Hard exams.
This class was super hard. He had no notes or anything remotely close on his canvas page. I was tapped in for every lecture, taking note of every point he made. There were some very specific details about a philosopher's life that were barely mentioned in class. For every test, I'd have close to 10 pages of online notes just from his lectures.
There is no Canvas course, so you must take proper notes and keep track of assignments. Take note of EVERYTHING he says. He tests you on whatever he writes on the board. Also, he tells students to buy books for his class - don't buy them. He rarely goes over the books and they don't appear on the tests. He gives extra credit assignments.
The fact this man has been teaching for this long is incredible. He has a real passion for his work and it's apparent in his lectures. He's not tech savvy and you might have to speak up for him to hear you, but he's a great professor. (In philosophy classes,) read the books, study your notes, and you'll do just fine.
Professor Lauder's class is quite challenging, but using tools like unstuck ai can help with study prep. Attend lectures, take detailed notes, and look out for his specific test topics. It's tough, but doable with dedication.
Fr. Lauder has been teaching for over 50 years. He easily forgets things and will forget you had a meeting with him. He repeats the same story of ordering a book for the class before reading it himself. Half the exams are on materials not covered in class. Exams aren't really graded with any real criteria. Take anyone OTHER THAN him; GPA killer!
Very test heavy grade. Tests are based on his lectures. Must take note of whatever is written on the whiteboard. Take advantage of the extra credit from optional essays and service learning ones.
Father Lauder was a great professor. His lectures were sometimes repetitive and the coursework unorganized, but he prepared students well for tests as well as gave extra credit. Attendance was taken but I don't think you are penalized for being absent. He is very kind and personable.
Father Lauder is probably the most moving professor I have ever had. This is not a class you show up to and are given an A. You do have to work and study, but that is expected of any college course. Also this is an honors course I took. He will do anything to help his students inside and out of the classroom.
Professor Lauder is a nice person, but the class itself was a bit difficult. He often repeats things we already learned, and sometimes things appear on the test that we didn't cover. There's also no notes to base his lecture on, so you literally have to listen to him talk and take your own notes. If you take good notes and study, you can get a A/B.
Nice guy with good intentions, unfortunately it's very difficult for him to stay on topic. He often digresses and forgets what he is speaking about. If possible, drop this class. It is lecture heavy and one little sentence he says in class will most likely be on the test. Lots of money spent on books and textbooks that were used once.
