Lecker thinks he's SOOOO smart
Good lecturer, but totally unfair final exam!
You'll never think the same way again. Love him
egotistical maniac, but GREAT teacher
No Comments
autocratic egoist, be sure to take at least one class with this guy
Has a short man complex.
Despite ego, best English prof at McGill, inspired me to do graduate studies
will change the way you think
likes to categorize things, but is a v. self-aware teacher.Good in small classes
Rob rox. Best in small classes, very cool. Got an A!
Very good lecturer and very knowledged in his topic
Not a bad teacher... but cocky as hell...

i don't know why anyone would call him knowledgeable. he's very overrated.
so self absorbed he doesn't notice his students dying of boredom
He's Mr. CanLit... knows his the work inside and out, quite literally.
Boys you are at a disadvantage, but you'll find he's fair enough. Just write what he wants to read.
Three words: CRAZY, SEXY, COOL.
This monotone, egomaniac will bore you to death! Worst class i have ever taken, do not take this class! if you don't agree with his interpretations of things, expect an 'F'
I really enjoyed his class. Sure, his voice can be boring but he's got some really decent ideas - and I've found him to be really into input - and especially questions during his lectures! I'd take the class again for sure.
Three words: LAZY, UGLY, FOOL
He is easily one of the best profs at McGill. Down to earth, provocative, prying, and a real performer: should be hosting his own talk show (in spare time).
certainly a good intro teacher (canlit). clear, goes over things many times, very easy but not stupid-like.
Excellent teacher... though kind of cold/unhelpful as a person...

He embodies everything that is twisted and warped in both academia and humanity. Avoid at all costs.
You either love him, or hate him. I really enjoyed his class, he is an interesting lecturer, very funny in a dry sort of way. An old hippie, really. He loves literature, and if you can grasp this, you will love it too. Overall, a good prof.
I really enjoyed his class. He's very knowledgeable and a great lecturer. Very entertaining.
his lectures are so provocative and have warped the way i look at language and history. he's very much in love with himself, but he really knows his stuff and always encourages questions
This man should retire already. Not only does he have little interesting to say about anything, but he has a serious memory problem that causes him to become defensive and angry. Don't bother with Lecker. Take Trehearne instead. Lecker is irrelevant.
Cold and unintelligent. Avoid at all costs.
Without a doubt the worst professor I have ever had. In his class we learned: he drives an Acura; he has a mansion in Westmount; he has an art collection; he is a FULL professor; he owns a publishing company. AVOID this self-enchanted, skirt-chasing fool
I agree fully--self-obsessed and really not that insightful. Also, the guy hasn't published in years. As widely hated in the academic community as he is known.

Actually he is generous...if you are blond, female, attractive and stupid, he will give you marks of 100% on your papers. If you make the extra effort to dress provocatively, he will give you a job as an RA, or in his company. A total low-life. AVOID.
Awesome. Totally committed to Canadian Literature.

What a cool guy. High on entertainment value, and really into teaching... sometimes strays from the readings, but has a lot of great things to say.
I learned a lot about academic writing from him. I thought he was a bit too arogant, but a good prof.
i've learned so much from him. yeah, he can be an arrogant ****, but he has allowed me to question my entire literary framework and incorporate class material into personal thought
not the nicest guy but a fanatastic teacher
i agree, completely arrogant and a really boring class
yep. good.
he's a great prof, really makes you question literature, but one class with him is enough! if you've taken one course with him, you've taken them all
Very hard marker, classes are not very interesting. makes students feel dumb when they participate
ego ego ego

He's so brilliant, but he makes you feel like an idiot if you say something in class that doesn't match his opinion and that you don't have theory to back up...he called one girl a colonizer...but he's totally cutting-edge and is a fantastic resource.
innappropriate, and unprofessional. narrow-minded. fiercely methodical = boring.
belittles students
If you're a hot girl, take this class! If you're a girl. but not hot, or a guy, don't. That's all I'm sayin'...and I'm a girl.
I'm amazed to find positive comments here. If you're an attractive female, and you're willing to respond to his crude, in-class sexual innuendo, a Lecker course is your best shot at an easy A.
I cannot get his beady eyes out of my head. They haunt me to this day. Please don't take his class. Oh, unless you are hot and female. Oh, but then you are sacrificing morals for an A. Oh, but that is so typically McGill-like.
I like Professor Lecker---I think he's totally brilliant and I think the classes I have taken with him have been great. There may be something to this attractive female preference of his, but seriously, it doesn't effect his marking or anything.
I can believe all the "hot girl" claims but, I never saw anything like that. He's obsessed with his subject and he has high expectations for his students. If you do have a different opinion than he you'd better be able to back it up and be persuasive. Taken 3 of his classes. Creepy maybe, but great!
Lecker is a prof that you will resist. He genuinely wants you to learn and care as much about this stuff as he does. He tries to get everyone angry in the class deliberately to start discussion and get people caring and thus learning. Marking is easier because that's not the point, people.
stay away.
He's devoted to his subject matter, not the appearance of his female students; any claims that undermine him in that regard are complete nonsense. He will rid you of any apathy and change the way you view literature, and make you laugh at the same time.
Obsessed with his subject? The guy has published almost nothing since his PhD thesis. I'm a grad student who wanted to learn from him...take Trehearne instead. Lecker is much more concerned with self-aggrandizement--he's a pathetic man.
Lecker is a horrible teacher. For an A, all you have to do is regurgitate his asinine conspiricy theories and tell him how much you hate America. AND THE "HOT GIRL" STORIES ARE 100% TRUE. Gentlemen, don't waste time putting effort into writing the journals: if you're a guy, he never reads them.
re: previous comments. dude, I don't know what you've been smoking, but no one takes Trehearne for his looks. They take him 'cause they want to be challenged. Let's just try it on for size: 'Brian is SOOO HOT! I could just stare a him for hours'???!! Um, nope. But thanks for the laugh.
Pathetic. So desperately wants to be loved.
not a shining light.

I had a good time in this class, I learned a lot, and my thinking and writing improved immeasurably---I owe this entirely to the teaching methods of the excellent professor.
Owe it to yourself, not this ****wit.
terrible
He's a has-been with a chip on his shoulder.
probably the worst prof ive ever had. Professor **** is boring, stupid and tells you how to respond to literature and art. Go back to concordia, perv.

It's quite obvious that those of you making these negative comments about the prof are undergrads. This is my third degree- my first was in lit- and, trust me, he isn't that bad compared to most. But, only experience will show you this. Being critical doesn't mean being negative. Grow up!
You don't need to have a handful of degrees to recognize that Lecker is a man who is little more than mediocre. Check out what he's published. He was a guy who happened to be in the right place at the right time--so he got a professorship. Sure, he's passable, but he's also a self-enchanted jerk.
For the student who called the prof "a self-enchanted jerk," what did he do/say? Almost every other lit prof at McGill makes you read their works, and love touting their awards and how esteemed they are. The only comment Lecker ever made about himself is how mediocre of a student he was in the past
He was once an influential critic, and he single-handedly put CanLit on the map with his bibliographic series in the 80s. He can also be an inspiring lecturer. The man's attitude, however, is at issue here. He's self-absorbed and just doesn't treat students with any kind of consideration.
The comment below that Lecker is not self-absorbed was yet another one here written by Lecker himself. Pathetic.
You want examples? He used his (now thankfully defunct) publishing company to drag students (mostly chicks he wanted to impress) into a thankless internship situation. He'd insist on his mindblowing knowledge of publishing and treat people like****. Ask anyone who worked there.
great prof. i was completely uninterested in canadian lit. untill i took this class. he opened up my eyes to this great literature that i'd been missing out on. he can not at all be considered self absorbed when compared to some of the other english prof.'s at mcgill. smart, down to earth, and helpful
The is a a**!!!! He only makes you read books that HE wrote and his sarcasm is unbearable! Avoid like the plague!!!
Lecker was my honours thesis advisor. He only wanted to talk about himself and get me to do work for him. I thought it'd be a good idea in order to advance myself. When I got my thesis back, it became clear that he hadn't even read it. I was stupid to think he was anything but a self-serving jerk.
Lecker can be an interesting lecturer however he also comes across as arrogant and condescending, especially if you disagree with his ideas. He will not hesitate to publicly shut you down. Talks less about class material & more about his person ideas. He's a very smart guy...just not for everyone.
By far the worst English prof I had during my time at McGill. Perhaps I might have been able to learn something from him if he wasn't too busy name-dropping and going off on tangents. This man clearly loves himself and lacks perspective.
Don't believe the negative comments; he's actually far, far worse. He knows a lot but you have to get past his personality to find it, and that can be a chore with this miserable, self-infatuated, leering old man.
Not the greatest class but better than taking a boring survey class. The prof can at times come off as slightly callous but the TA we had made up for some of it. The reading are rather bad (bad books that center around sex and are written rather poorly) There are no lectures, everyone just sits and talks about what they liked and didn't like
A vile, ****ous pr***. A disgusting, short man who has a very good knowledge of canlit, but is too preoccupied with name-dropping and belittling his students to share any of it. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
The man is egocentric in his teaching, agonistic in his writing, and as bitter as wormwood. His vision of Canadian literature is past its due date, mostly because he is self-referential and has completely failed to consider other currents and opinions over the years. A bad trip: AVOID.
if there were a rating for knowledge he'd do a lot better, cuz he knows a lot, but all that you've heard and read is true. it's all about him, although he might try to make you think he has your best interests at heart. if he expresses an interest in you, tells you you're great, etc., RUN THE OTHER WAY! he's just looking to exploit you. believe it.
Absolutely true. It's a big problem because he covers a segment of CanLit that I needed to learn but what I learned instead was everything you read in the reviews below. So... two words: retire, already.
If you haven't got the idea from all these other comments, do not take this guy's class! Seriously, he will do more harm than good.
I don't know, he's not so bad. Some of the students in the class make me want to rip off my arm and beat them with it, but he doesn't. He's hardcore, that's for sure.
What a total knob this man is. Sickeningly pretentious; excruciatingly arrogant; just not that interesting. Totally disingenuous: Full Of**** pretty much sum him up. Feigns interest students but can't be bothered to mark papers - TA does everything. So clearly fantasises about being crushed on and hero-worshipped by students: it's pathetic.
professor lecker is nice if you talk to him outside of class. he remembers your name and ****es if you don't take all the classes he offers, which is endearing. but it's easy to fall out of favor with him if you don't follow through with your chumminess.
Waste of time. All of the negative comments are bang on. The man is not seen by anyone (except perhaps the students he manipulates into idolatry) as an intellectual powerhouse, yet believes he's a pillar of Canadian literary criticism. Take Trehearne instead--at least he'll mark your papers.
retire. please.
He is a very inteligent man and a expert in his feild, but it's his way or else. he'll never admit it but his opinion as all that matters
did not emphasise any of the important material and also makes the material more confusing then it should be
okay...if anyone wants evidence of this guy's supreme narcissism, check out "dr. delicious: memoirs of a life in canlit." who in hell wants to read this ridiculous excuse for a professor's memoirs? what an idiot.

i like prof. lecker. i think people just need to relax and not take things so seriously. come on, it's funny that he's narcissistic...no?? it's funny when he rants about stuff that has nothing to do with class. you're going to learn a lot if you do the reading-and if you take advantage of the fact that he makes you write so much.
Whether you like his quirks or not, at the end of the day, Dr. Delicious gets the job done! Brilliant professor with a wealth of information to share and a very organized and structured course. (But not afraid to take an entertaining tangent or six.)
I have no idea what you people are talking about. Were you in the same class?
Take Trehearne.
A. Take Trehearne if you want a serious, focused, scholarly take on CanLit. B. You will learn a thing or two from Lecker; you will... IF you're willing to resist the urge to storm out of his class because of the way he treats students like an American TV audience to be won over with the most obvious tricks of the entertainment industry. Can I be the third to say take Trehearne? This guy will prove to you that PhD doesn't equal smart. He's really lacking in many ways, and if you think he's insightful about something, he's probably stolen the idea from one of his grad students. Loser.
Seriously: take both Lecker AND Trehearne. This way, you will get a balanced understanding of what is going on in the world of Canadian lit. If you just take Trehearne, you'll miss all the good postmodern stuff and if you just take Lecker, you'll go crazy (see below)!
Lecker has a unique style of teaching which may not suit everyone, but he is brilliant and provides such a honest interpretation of Can Lit. The modern focus of the class is a nice change from the classically-oriented McGill. He is funny, intelligent and makes you consider ideas in ways you never thought of before. Lots of readings but worth it!
I was afraid that he would be a strict teacher with a difficult workload and impossible expectations; I was wrong. He is realistic, funny, and keeps one's attention at all times throughout his lectures. If I can, I will gladly register for another one of his courses. Dr. Lecker, you rule, keep up the good work! You won't regret taking his class!
Put it this way: he was my honours thesis supervisor and he didn't even read the bloody thing. Useless, self-important, and not even that bright. Maybe I'd give him a pass if he had an iota of insight on Can Lit.
Professor Lecker is one of the few teachers at mcgill who actually cares what people think. He makes outrageous comments in class to stimulate conversation and get debate going. Moreover, few professors at mcgill or anywhere know nearly as much about can lit as he does. Great professor. Really.
I thought he was good-then I went to grad school. The man is as disliked as he is known and his books are not exactly well respected. What Lecker is good at is making undergrads feel special-it's like a power game with him. If you ever challenege him, he acts like he's been betrayed. He's not afraid to toss insults; he's just generally miserable.
If you want to learn CanLit, Professor Lecker is the person to learn it from. He will challenge you to think, read, and write in new ways, which some students may call "hard" or "mean," but as Lecker himself says, you can't produce quality without hard work. Truly one of the best professors McGill has to offer.

Lecker talks about how he was a lazy student in the past, but when I was battling horrendous OCD rituals that made it tough for me to show up on time to class, he never hesitated to point it out in front of the class and tell me I was thumbing my nose at the entire university system. Not what I needed to hear at that point in my life, thanks.

cynical, negative and sarcastic. made me feel nervous. SUCKS

Challenges you in a very real way. If he thinks you're wrong/full of it, he tells you. Don't like that? Don't take his class. That said, he is open to and does explore many angles concerning Can Lit. Arrogant? Bitter? I don't know if these comments should refer to him or to students who probably didn't like their grade. Simply: he's challenging.
take it from sum1 who knows: if he wants to take you under his wing, clear the stars from your eyes and run-don't walk-away. he likes collecting undergrads. i was 1 of them. i wish i'd chosen better.
Provocative and inspired lecturer; terrible one-on-one. Do not become his RA or his TA. Do not believe him if he says you're a genius. That's just the first step to your own demise. Do the work, keep your head down, learn what you can from the man, and move on. He's a CanLit legend but he has serious attitude problems.
Prof. Lecker has no qualms with messing students around. He is forgetful and lazy. Furthermore he is very inconsistent. In a brief conversation with you he will be agressive, cold, condescending, and flirtateous. DONT write your thesis with him! You will end up trying to help him save face as he pretends to have read your essay. Retire Dr Delicous!
If you want Lecker to like, you must read his memoirs. The man constantly needs his ego fed. Dont act too smart around him. He might feel threatened. Keep in mind he wants you to feel like he taught you everything you knows. Confide in him, tell him about your personal life. Maybe then he will concede that you are grad school material.
If you've taken one class with him, you've taken them all. He's smart but doesn't have anything new to say.
I had zero interest in Canadian Poetry going into the class, but Professor Lecker's class was the best I've taken at McGill. The class is hard - you have to write a lot, but there are no exams or long form papers, so it doesn't feel as bad. He really encourages real discussion in the class, which is unfortunately rare at McGill.
After taking this course, I will be sure to never take another course with this man. He is rude, self-centered, uninspiring, unhelpful, and I could say more. I didn't think anyone could make me hate a literature course, but that's one way he succeeded. He's the worst prof. He wants nothing but recognition for his own work.
Just do yourself a favour and stay away from this guy. He will make you resent what you're learning even though a lot of it is really cool. Sometimes during an entire lecture he won't once bring up what you're reading and only talk about the author or poet in general. You have to be completely self-motivated as he does not make you want to work.
Most condescending, unfair, and self-absorbed professor I have ever had. His lectures were completely about the authors of the poetry--something that would not be on the exam--and he was completely unclear in his expectations. The poetry and short stories in the course were quite interesting, but he somehow made them unenjoyable.
Prof. Lecker changed my life perspective, made me a better writer, and helped me find a career: all in one course. I found him to be a fascinating lecturer - although the course I took with him was a conference of 20, not a lecture. He was always very interested in his students and visiting him at office hours is great. He is challenging & awesome.
He picks favorites and if you're not on his good side, or you don't agree with his ideas, he makes you pay. I have never had an issue with a professor but he is AWFUL. Trust me, stay away!
people that dont like Lecker do not apply themselves in class. He is BEYOND helpful - always encourages students to see him in office hours. He encourages participation which makes the class more interesting. Take a class with him. Great prof.
Beyond useless
He specifically sets up the assignments to make everyon arrive in class having done the readings, and to help people keep up and do well. It was tough having a mini paper due twice a week, but then we got to revise them and submit the month's worth all together for the grade. No midterm or final. He encourages discussion, and coming to his office.
Has a true passion for Canadian Literature, and is one of the best professors to study under if you wish to learn more in that field. He gets you into a routine of writing constantly which is tough at times, but gets you engaged. A little intimidating to speak in front of sometimes in the lectures, but there are conferences and a discussion board.
Fairly unintelligent, and narcissistic as the day is long. If you accidentally make him feel threatened your grade WILL suffer, as his grading method is entirely subjective
Lecker is awesome. Engage with him. Get to know him. Don't get so defensive about the supposed "ego" that everyone on here is talking about, and just let him open your eyes a little - you might like what you see, you might not, but either way, taking his class is essential for learning how to talk about art.
very boring class. pretends to want to get to know you, but he secretly wants you to think just like his interpretations. lectures are painful to get through.
Most boring& uninteresting, painfully suicidal class ever. Do not take if you like to think freely and interpret literature the way it is supposed to be-subjective. He wants you to think like him, so in the end you are only pleasing the prof. Zero motivation and interest to attend his class. Most people are bored to death
I ended up having to use notes from other Canadian lit. classes just to understand what was going on in lecture. Disorganized, uninteresting lectures and a prof who won't listen to constructive criticism from students is a bad combo. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
Professor Lecker is an expert on Canadian Literature. He makes a real effort to help his students succeed. It's not at all an easy class and it really depends on the TAs that grade your exams. I enjoyed the class and would suggest it to friends. Remember it's not an easy A. You need to put in the work in order to do well.
just not interested anymore, it's so obvious
Mailing it in. An Abomination.
He knows his stuff... but not there for his students. Very distant professor and not very approachable. VERY harsh grader. Do not take if you are not an English major!
really challenged me to reflect on what it means to hate people...
Professor Lecker is someone who clearly knows what he is talking about from a professor's point of view. If you are not an English major you will find yourself being utterly confused and frustrated in this class. He isn't very approachable nor does he try to aid the student's understanding. When it comes to exams he is very vague.
Do not recommend if you are not an ENGL major; its a hard pass. Not approachable at all, and puts himself before his students. Attendance is mandatory and participation is crucial (in class + online discussion boards and he keep track of how many times you post). Midterm and Final, both essays. no other assignments. Tough grader.
I liked Lecker. His lectures were very interesting and depending on your TA, the conferences can really help clarify things if need. He has really insightful things to say about what we read, he's very knowledgeable about the content&the authors and encourages people to give their own ideas in class. Have the readings done before class, its a must!
A pretty tough grader, and I'd say that if he agrees with what you're saying, you'll do well. Grading is subjective anyways, but he takes it to a new level. Personally, I didn't like him too much. The material was pretty interesting on the other hand. My TA this year was incredible though!
At first I almost dropped the class because Lecker seemed so tough but after the first week this became one of my favorite classes. There's work to do for every class but mostly just a few short poems. Wanna get a good grade? Participate. That's it people. Raise your hand, say things and write in the discussion. Don't half ass and pass
Honestly, as a Professor he is good, however he has a grading criteria that makes it hard to do well (which is the class' major downfall). Not a lot of reading (very short). Not too many assignments. He is very interested in what he is teaching (and this made me feel enthused). Learns students individually too.
As one of my first ever university courses, ENGL229 was a bit of a rude awakening. Prof Lecker is eloquent and knowledgeable as a lecturer but not super clear in terms of a grader. He gives out As very seldom and even admitted that there's no clear rubric for how to get one. This was my one criticism. Overall, a challenging and engaging class.
Glad I'm not the only one who dislikes this professor. He ruins the experience of eng lit. Cold, dry, unengaging, uninviting to any interpretations other than his own, unapproachable, narcissistic. His class is for learning about him--him talking about himself as as a publisher, his very specific ideas of interpretation. Do not suffer through him!
someone please teach this man some sympathy. english lit is about embracing the diverse perspectives and readings of students. since he didn't do that at all, I'm ashamed to even consider this class as part of my learning experience. pity that he doesn't know what students actually think of him.
Prof Lecker adapted very well to the online format and put effort into engaging with the students. zoom attendance and participation counted for 40%, so you could bump up your mark easily by just contributing to discussions. I am not an English major but I found it very interesting. Prof has met your fav authors and will tell you all about them.
Interesting lectures, full of stories about the authors (many of whom he knows personally). Grading's a bit subjective; it's hard to get a solid grasp on the criteria from the rubric, but work with the feedback he and the TA give you, and you'll do alright. DO YOUR READINGS!!! They're absolutely essential and he rewards good participation/questions
This professor made it very hard for me to enjoy the semester. His class was dreaded and extremely anxiety inducing.
Prof Lecker has lots of good stories and heavily encourages participation, so if you talk and engage, you'll do well. He is one to counter your arguments, but I just saw it as a way to strengthen our perspectives on the readings. Not easy, but not too hard if you put in the work.
this class has very interesting readings, but prof lecker makes the process uncomfortable and anxiety inducing. wasn't clear about grading criteria and left me feeling anxious every day
Professor Lecker has little to no care about the comfort and mental health of his students. I found his class to be uncomfortable at the best of times because your opinion feels judged byu Lecker every time you speak despite being encouraged to speak. i truly have not taken a class that was so dreaded in my entire degree.
Good prof but his and ta's grading was harsh and unclear. Need to post on discussion board twice a week and comment on others, attend each lecture to sign attendance and 3 papers which are all graded harshly. The conferences were often disorganized and class never ended early. If you count, you're in class 4 hours a week instead of 3 hours.
An exceptional professor -- engaging, approachable, the material covered was compelling and he treats his students with the utmost respect. His class felt like a community where everyone was growing together. Words cannot express how much I enjoyed this course and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in literature/Canada.
Prof. Lecker has made women in his course physically uncomfortable. That is an understatement / euphemism. Also, there are a lot of readings in his class. He is not very approachable.
I am so confused by the amount of bad reviews for this prof. He is hands down the best prof in the English department, yes he will challenge you but he is not belittling or making fun of you he is making you a better writer and think more critically about the material. He will speak to you as an equal and genuinely just wants people to improve.
Amazing professor, and gem of a human being. I feel incredibly lucky to have taken Alice Munro this past semester. Great at facilitating discussion, and very encouraging. Absolute goat!
Robert Lecker will make you a better writer! Get ready to submit a lot of essays (10+) and receive in-depth feedback on each one of them. I highly recommend taking a class with Lecker-- you will read some pretty incredible works, get comfortable writing essays, and have interesting and challenging classroom discussions.
Previous reviews scared me but Lecker ended up being my favourite professor! He's so knowledgeable and I always looked forward to this course. Reading was manageable (one author per lecture). Don't work too hard on the online discussion posts due for every lecture, they can be short. Two in-class essays that were honestly fun. Recommended!
makes female students uncomfortable. sad but not surprising that the university does nothing.
Most of what students say is true. He's brilliant, and what he teaches is fascinating. But like most brilliant people, he can be a eccentric, and if you're disrespectful to him, move aside. Enjoy the material, the amazing lectures, the tough lessons about academic writing, the humour. Don't confuse him with a buddy. He has a lot of experience.
Professor Lecker is a knowledgeable and interesting faculty member in the department. Unfortunately, his class can make people quite anxious because of the small class size and overall "seminar" type of format. He is a stickler for grammar and punctuation, and focuses a lot on eroticism. If it isn't your cup of tea,you may not enjoy your semester.
reading reviews from years ago he's for sure improved. i loved the course; the diversity of authors was fascinating and he cares SO much about all topics covered. if you can participate you will get a better grade but he loves to play devil's advocate - i loved his teaching style but if you're sensitive/don't like blatant criticism DO NOT TAKE
Loved this prof! I was intimated for the first month because he appears cold but his passion for literature truly shows. We are required 1-3 poems/class, which is very reasonable. There is a required discussion post for every class. If you're present, you can definitely get a good grade! Uses slides + classes very interactive. Get ready to talk!
If you have the tiniest amount of social anxiety and struggle with verbal participation in class - avoid his class. He expects verbal participation several times a lecture and will cold call you. If you do participate and he doesn't like your answer, he will hint at what he wants to hear, trying to get you to paraphrase it aloud.
Robert Lecker is a professor that is long past due for retirement. The content of the class is interesting, and he manages to introduce great Canadian authors-- but fails to make his classroom a comfortable space for students. He gives little to no feedback throughout the semester, and targets female students at an astonishing rate. Avoid!
Robert is a very harsh grader who grades unfairly. He does not follow his very own rubrics included in his course syllabus and uses statistics on MyCourses to compare who spent the most time on the discussion posts and who read the most posts. Also, if you don't write what he wants to hear on an essay, he's going to give you a bad grade. Awful.
Wild grading scheme and if you aren't careful you won't know you're getting a bad final grade until the very end of semester. Being a consistent reader/doing well on tests/being attentive in class isn't enough, if you don't participate a LOT + if you don't go on every discussion post (see review below), you will not get a good grade
A wolf in sheep's clothing. A festering wound in the heart of academia. If you're aware of him, you know the kind of darkness he carries. If you're not… run. Those five-star reviews are just as fabricated as the man himself. Check the style. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. Justice for his victims.
Decent professor overall. He makes his class interesting and asks students for feedback on how he crafts his exams or how he teaches. The material is very interesting. Participation matters.
He's got a very interesting grading scheme. Basically for discussion better read and open all of them (scroll past them they'll automatically count as read) because he grades his discussions by how many u read. No matter if u listened, participated, did really good on exams IF YOU DONT OPEN ALL discussions posts were going to get a terrible grade.
Unclear grading scheme, made harder by the fact that there is next to no timely feedback. The warnings on here are real, and would strongly avoid taking this class if you are wanting a high grade. Don't go off of the Mercury evaluations as he has the class fill these in before he releases the grade.
Do not take this class if you want to keep your GPA intact. There is no feedback on assignments so next to impossible to gauge how you are doing in the class. When you do get feedback and incorporate it into your future assignments you get graded down. If you need English, find another prof.
Ended the semester with an A but because of his terrible attendance policy dropped to a B plus even though I made sure to attend every lecture. Claimed I missed eleven conferences when in fact I missed a grand total of zero. Avoid!
This man is literally the creepiest little goblin to be put upon McGill. He will give you criticism but if you ask him what you can do to improve, he doesn't have a clear answer himself. Hyper-sexualises everything. Sometimes when I think I should take his advice, I go read the title of his book and its reviews and I immediately come to my senses.
INSANELY pedantic; docked me a lot of points on essays despite acknowledging the arguments were excellent because of minute grammatical errors and word choice. Not enough to just answer questions in class, he interrogates you and tries to get you to say what he wants. If you don't do EXTRA research you will not get full marks. Very closed-minded.
The worst professor I have ever had. Please read the other comments and stay away. You will learn nothing. You will be treated condescendingly. You will get grades that have nothing to do with how hard you work. But the worst is that this professor makes you feel invisible with such faux niceness. Don't walk, run.
I could never get back my time. Ruin my interest for literature.
Gave me a ZERO for participation despite online discussion posts being half of the grade and the fact I completed all of them on time and in-depth. RUN, he doesn't adhere to his own syllabus. Insanity.
Spent way too much time on historical background of texts. Only wants to hear his own opinions. Rude and egotistical. Ruined my experience of so many good poems
I hate that I spent credits on a class that made me miserable the whole time being there. The lecture is irrelevant and monotonous and rigid. Learned nothing. Should have read the reviews beforehand.
One of the most important classes I've taken in my degree. Lecker is intimidating at first, and he carries strong opinions on texts, but you will learn whether you like it or not. Not a tough marker either imo. Don't let the bad reviews scare you. If talking in class is a dealbreaker he isn't for you, as he will cold call.
My favourite professor. He is the most caring, authentic, and candid prof you will meet. He doesn't sugar coat and helps prepare you for life post grad. Would love to meet him for a beer.
Some will assume students dislike him because he's “intimidating” or misunderstood but he isn't anything of the sort. It's because he's ridiculous. The ones suggesting to give him a chance are not looking out for you… very very misleading demeanour and approach so be warned before add-drop
The worst. I could never imagine that one day I would hate so much going to a Literature class. Should have BELIEVED all the other ratings. THE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY STUDENT LIFE.
boring lectures and inconsiderate prof, he does not offer any exam help, review, or ANY INFO AT ALL before the exams. doesn't post a midterm/final guideline OR email to let people who missed class know that they discussed xyz regarding the exam. avoid if u can, very boomer man who also doesn't believe in content warnings for graphic content... ???
No, the most crazy thing about the class is the ego. Look down on you. Teach nothing.
Sending you straight to therapy. It's the attitude. It's the way this professor makes you feel like you're not worth his time. I wish I could take back my time.
Not for snowflakes, this prof. If you need trigger warnings and security blankets, move right on. If you want to really learn something, pull up your ankle socks, wipe your snot, pull yourself together, stop whining, read, sit, take notes; you might actually get a lot out of his course. He doesn't deserve the bad reviews--grow up.
Make you hate literature because he will look down on you, and honestly who would believe the positive review here, the tone is condescending just like the way he will treat you and your understanding of the text. Nope, if you're smart enough to get into this school I believe you're smart enough to stay away from this level of toxicity.
Not enough teaching, too much disparaging attitude. He doesn't care what you said clearly, only what he believes. Is this what literary discussion should be? I don't think so. This is the worst.
The grading scale surely is ambiguous. No comments on how you're doing in your essays especially, I really think he just doesn't care. And the reviews about his attitude are so spot-on, well, he clearly thinks that his takes are the absolutes, which leaves no room for conversation. AVOID. So many amazing professors here.
