Professor Lewis is one of my favorite professors to date. He will write out elaborate explanations for any question you have, even over email, and usually extremely quickly. You can tell he really wants his students to do well, and I'm so lucky to have taken one of his first taught courses here at UCSB. He comes across as very humble and caring.
Robert Lewis is hands down the best Organic chemistry teacher on campus. I took his summer course and he made OChem a very interesting subject. His grading is very fair, and his tests are taken from book problems and online homework. If you get the chance to take this class with him DO IT. All other OChem profs are subpar.
Professor Lewis is the most incredible professor. He goes slow and writes everything out on the board. You leave the class actually understanding Ochem. His tests are long and free response, so it's important to manage time. Beware the last question on one test was worth fifteen points and I was unable to get to it don't make the same mistake.
Awesome Professor. Teaches the subject incredibly clearly.
Best OChem professor on campus. Clearly cares about the students and actually teaching them useful information. Gives extra credit. Curve is pretty high. Tests are hard, but he prepares you for them. Very easy to talk to and office hours are helpful.
Awesome teacher. very organized lectures, and fair tests. Curve is necessary.
a decent professor
He made the material easy to understand. Very fair exams. As long as you do all of the practice problems you're solid. Reading the book is a must to do well. Good choice for 109A.
Very solid professor. He lectures very slowly and mostly uses the chalkboard when lecturing. His exams are very fair. I would definitely take this class with Lewis again.
I'm not a big organic chemistry fan, but Rob really makes it a blissful experience. It's very hard material, but if you go to lectures (and enjoy his occasional memes and funfacts), read the textbook, and do book problems, you'll at least get a B. Which is pretty much amazing for a student like me. 5/7 recommend. He's amazing.
You know they good when they get a 4.7 rating teaching only ochem. His handwriting is neat af and the explanations are great in lecture. Office hours also super helpful. Only thing is he needs to get active on reddit again :P
Dr. Lewis was a great organic chemistry lecturer -- he walked through reaction mechanisms on the chalkboard in addition to displaying useful notes in his PowerPoint slides, and asked occasional iClicker questions to drum up student participation and gauge where the class was at. His exams were fair, but are subject to change as Dr. Lewis is new.
Cool guy, tests are always hard but that's OCHEM. Really fun to talk to during office hours
Prof Lewis is crazy, crazy good. Super helpful during office hours, and always tries to give students the maximum number of points possible. He has extra credit points, and re-grades tests himself. His tests are representative of book problems and Mastering Chemistry, which makes the homework less tedious. His lectures are slow and easy to follow.
Lewis is an amazing professor. He really cares about his students, his exams are fair as long as you do the book problems. Overall, this class was amazing! Definitely would take lewis again!
Clearly cares about his students. Continuously assigns chapters to do at home that he can't get to in class. Teaching is straight out of the textbook and attendance is required so prepare to waste a lot of time in class. Book problems are somewhat helpful but there are discrepancies between the book and his tests
Really solid lecturer and helpful during his office hours. Lewis was clear on what his exams were covered and imo they were all fair. Make sure you go to lecture, read the book, and do the txtbook problems. He also offers extra credit
Best professor! I went from failing 109A with Bruice to A's with Lewis for 109A & 109B. He cares so much for his students, makes time for them, and is very easy to approach. His exams are tough, but he gives as much partial credit as he can. Attending CLAS, office hours, and actually reading the textbook and doing the problems will get you far.
He's the sweetest professor ever. He genuinely cares about his students. He's so fair and reasonable. Ochem is hard no matter who you take but at least a good professor makes it less depressing. You'll pass with a good grade with professor like as long as you put in the work. He's so precious wish I could take him for 109c also.
The course itself demands a lot of work, do the suggested problems and textbook readings. Clear lectures, participation is mandatory. and counts toward your grade. Has extra credit opportunities that help with a small boost. Tests are VERY fair to material covered in class, and he allows regrade requests with a written explanation.
Professor Lewis is the best ochem lecturer I have had at UCSB. His tests are difficult but 100% do-able if you read the book, attend lectures, and do ALL the book problems. The curve for his class is also super generous which is amazing. Utilize his office hours - he's so helpful and makes difficult concepts much more straightforward.
He is the best ochem professor ever. His teaching is really clear and straightforward. Go to the lecture and take notes, you will understand the knowledge. He really cares about students and he's really helpful (he replies emails quickly). Exams are difficult for sure, but if you get more than 75% in every exam, you can get an A.
Professor Lewis is one of the best lecturers I've had at UCSB thus far. He is really engaging and generally cares that students excel in such a difficult subject. Go to his office hours he is very straightforward and easy to talk to. Really changed my perspective of OCHEM and he uses a lot of memes while lecturing and real world applications.
Lewis has hard exams with low averages, but if you want to study hard, he is the best person you can met in UCSB. Always respond to email quickly and patiently. He is a great lecturer and teacher, hard exams is by no means a reason for not choosing his course
Clear and intense lectures. Read textbooks before the lecture or it would be hard to follow. He spends much time on mechanism which might be good for understanding the materials of organic chemistry
Skip through materials very often. Tons of questions every exam.
He's a wonderful lecturer. He uses the chalkboard so you can't rely on slides online, but this means the pace is perfect in-class. Answers questions clearly. Keeps you engaged. Tests had some tricky questions but nothing unreasonable--understand the MasteringChem and do book problems. Super helpful in office hours. 5% easy extra credit.
Professor Lewis is one of the best Professors I've ever had, he is a great lecturer and really cares. His tests are kinda long but fair. Also he offers extra credit and plenty of opportunities to boost you grade (i>clicker, HW)
Dr. Lewis is a real gem of a Professor. He genuinely cares about teaching and your success. This class by nature is really hard but Lewis actually made it fun. Track down his old exams, go to CLAS, do book problems, etc. I have emailed Lewis tons of questions and he answered quickly and even made me my own worksheets to help explain and teach!
109B is challenging! Personally, I wouldn't take Lewis again. He is nice, extremely organized. He goes through each mechanisms so fast and expect you to have to do the application yourself. He doesn't explain, make relations between the mechanisms that help you understand. He is not engaging; his voice is monotone. Not the best lecturer. Nice guy
Lewis is one of the best profs I've had, cares a lot about his students and always available to help by e-mail or office hours. Very approachable and kind. His tests can be tough but they're always fair. He doesn't try to trick you he just wants you to understand the material. Would 100% recommend him.
I LOVE HIM. Go to lecture, skim the textbook, do hw problems, attend CLAS aka put in the work and youll succeed. Hes so organized and lays out everything you need to do to succeed. There is some extra credit. Though he doesnt do a massive curve like Aue, the homework and clicker questions will bring your test scores up indefinitely. Very funny 2
One of the best profs I've ever had; his lectures are clear and helpful, his tests are straightforward, and he's always willing to help after class. I had Bruice the first time and got a D; with Lewis, I got an A. He always answers emails quickly and lets you do test corrections (and he gives so many points back!) Take his class and thank me later!
Amazing lecturer! Lectures were organised and clearly structured to make you really understand the material being taught. Lewis is a really friendly guy and helps all students. To succeed it is important to read the book before lecture, attend the lecture and do practice problems. Not too difficult if you also put in the recommended work!
Lewis's class may be difficult, but he is one of the best professors out there. He is organized, very accessible out of class, and cares for his students a lot. His exams are overall difficult but as long as you read the textbook and do mastering chemistry and book problems along with the topics he covers on his lectures, you're guaranteed to pass.
Genuinely one of the best professors I've had at UCSB. I don't like organic chemistry, but Lewis made the lectures interesting and broke the material down so that it was very understandable. The tests were very fair and followed lecture.
Lewis is a true gem. His tests can be pretty hard, but he's super straight forward in what he wants you to learn and what you can expect to be on the test. He also gives you the opportunity to get your test regraded if you missed points unfairly, and he gives extra credit. He's also funny and really made THICCPEPTIDE an answer to a quiz question
The most caring genuine professor UCSB has to offer. He is considerate and understanding. He cares about his students and being a good professor to an extent I've never seen before. He is so hard working to ensure he thoroughly answers every question. Unlike most profs, he wants to actually connect and bond with his students. VERY approachable.
In a pandemic, you would think the professor would be more accommodating towards increasing the quality of teaching organic chemistry. Nope. You read the textbook and teach it to yourself and he gives a short 10 minute video over very complex topics. Only good thing is that about half of your grade comes from BACON, mastering chem, and essays.
One of my favorite professors in the Chem department aside from Joseph. I really like his teaching style & really appreciate that theres no midterms/finals while distance learning. Very approachable with office hours basically 4 times a week which saved my grade. Practice problems can get you to pass any of his weekly quizzes too.
He is very organized, responsive, makes sure to answer all the questions, and usually responds to emails quickly, very kind, flexible when it comes to extending deadlines. Some lecture videos are not helpful, sometimes there are harder and more complicated concepts and lectures are not that helpful in understanding it. Some quizzes are very hard.
Lewis is a great lecturer who really cares about his students and truly wants what is best for them. The course itself and the topics are difficult but Lewis makes it understandable. He is very accommodating to any issues that arise. Do the book problems and do hw and you will be fine.
Lewis is an absolute gem. The material is hard, but you can ace the quizzes by watching the lectures, taking good notes, and doing all the book problems. It's honestly not that hard if you put the time in; book problems take a while, but they pay off. OChem wouldn't have the reputation it has if Lewis taught everyone's first course.
Grade based on weekly mastering chem problems, weekly quiz, 3 reflective essays(very easy), BACON quizzes and final. Most points came form quizzes and mastering chem so make sure you stay on top of material. Lewis was extremely organized and very caring. It's a tough subject but lewis makes it very bearable. Lectures are divided into 10-20min vids.
Lewis might actually be THE best professor I've had at UCSB. He's always accessible through email and shows a deep level of care and respect for his students. The material is hard, but Lewis really does his best to set you up for success. As long as you put in the work (textbook reading, book problems, lectures) you'll get at least a B
I cant imagine why hed ever have a bad review. Truly one of the best professors Ive had despite teaching a very challenging class. Super flexible and accommodating during the pandemic and supplies you w/ more than enough info for the quizzes. Read the textbook for tough chapters and you might even enjoy ochem more than gen chem. very organized!
Dr. Lewis is a great professor, he taught the material very cleary, I really enjoyed being in his lectures. The course had a lot of homework/quizzes, which can be good if you're not doing very well in one area. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking to take O chem.
Lewis is a straightforward, nice OChem professor! Tests are fair. Lectures are clear, organized, and taught in an understandable way, but you do still have to do all the book problems and homework, take solid notes, and study hard to do well. (Review based on pre-pandemic times). Take him for OChem if you can!
Taking this series with Lewis has been great! He is extremely understanding/caring for his students, even though the material is tough. Harder than 109A in my opinion, but doable with Lewis. Course grade made up by biweekly quizzes, biweekly mechanism uploads via gradescope, mastering chem, bacon, reflective essays, and final quiz.
Lewis is such a genuine and caring professor, I really think he wants his students to thrive. Tough quizzes but he makes a brutal subject bearable! Don't be afraid to reach out to him for anything, he's so generous with his time and very patient
Professor Lewis has a great class set up and you can tell he wants you to learn! Homework is graded which gives grades a boost!
Lewis is the best prof I have ever had for chemistry. Especially since o chem is known for its difficulty, this man has made my life so much easier because he cares for all his students and grades fairly. Sometimes it seems he is the only prof that takes this pandemic into account for student's lives. I am trying to take the full series from him.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He readily admits mistakes and regrades quizzes/awards points when he messes up, and answers every email quickly. He even made time to go over a quiz with me over zoom fall quarter. Genuinely cares about his students, and even though the class is hard, he makes it bearable. If you can take his class, DO IT!
Lewis is a great professor. His lectures are clear and straightforward, quizzes and grading is fair, and hes super understanding and accommodating! Course is definitely not easy but lewis provides you with everything you need to do well. highly recommend taking OCHEM w/ lewis. I liked ochem way more than gen chem thanks to him.
BEST PROF IVE EVER HAD AT UCSB. Professor Lewis made learning ochem a breeze (if you put in the work, obviously). Super understanding of student situations and doesn't try to trick you at all on exams. If you have the choice of Lewis vs any other professor, PICK LEWIS!!
Goat, highly recommend for ochem. He was very accommodating during the pandemic and even tho ochem was easier online than in-person, if you do book problems and keep up with the readings you'll do good in the class. His lectures are helpful and held discussions sessions where he'd go over material that was in the weekly quizzes. Really nice guy!
Prof Lewis is hands down the best professor I have ever had at UCSB! Very fair and genuinely wants his students to learn. A real gem! Ochem is still very hard but felt much easier than the gen chem series because of his teaching!
Maybe my favorite professor at UCSB even though chemistry may be the bane of my existence. I took Lewis for the entire Ochem series online so we had weekly quizzes which made up most of our grade and one "final quiz". I watched the lectures and then read which made the book an easier read. Does give some opportunities for extra credit. Lewis GOAT
Lewis is a solid option in this dept. He is pretty clear in grading criteria, and always explains what is needed to be successful in the course. But, the course isn't easy. It is tempting to not show up for lecture/cram for exams but that will lose you a lot of important points. Space studying, ask questions. Try not to rely on the curve. Good luck
Lewis is a pretty good professor. His lectures are good, has a clear grading criteria, and genuinely wants his students to succeed. This class is very difficult though, you will need to do the practice problems in the textbook if you want to succeed, it isn't enough to just attend lectures.
Lewis is one of the few professors here at UCSB that genuinely cares for students. His teaching is by far one of the best and made o-chem not as bad as it seems. His quizzes are very fair and if you want an A I recommend putting in the work to do book problems since it's very similar to his exams.
First time in a year that Ochem classes were in person. His class is def doable to get a good grade in and attending Office Hours will help you. While I didnt do as well as I hope bc of poor time management his class is very fair with six quizzes and no midterms only one final and also some homework points. He is approachable and a great help
For OChem, Lewis is an amazing professor. For how difficult the content was, his quizzes were always fair and tried his best to prepare us with the amount of time we had. OChem is a really hard class in general, so a lot more of it comes down to personally studying and doing book problems.
Professor lewis was great. He allowed corrections on quizzes if you gave good reasoning to why you deserve points. Quizzes make up most of your grade but if you do well on the final that could help if quiz scores are low. Also curved the class. taking him next quarter for 109B
Easily one of the best professors at this school. You can tell he really cares about his students and that he's truly passionate as a teacher. He's understanding, accommodating, and an all-around amazing professor. I highly recommend taking this professor for Ochem. For such a brutally difficult subject, Dr. Lewis makes it bearable and actually fun
Lewis is a great professor and cares about his students' success. I did struggle in the course though solely due to the structure of the course. We have quizzes every other week, which I feel doesn't give enough time to gain clarification on topics one is not solid on for the quizzes.
Excellent lecturer and speaker in general, the material is really hard but Lewis teaches it as simply and clearly as he can and does an amazing job. Love him!
What he tested on quizzes was usually not what he discussed in lectures. You have to read the textbook hard in order to master this course. He was also a tough grader. People were suffering from ochem, but he provided minimal curve. He significantly sapped my motivation to learn more ochem. So, why take his course?
Prof. Lewis is an amazing professor and truly cares about his students. He is extremely accommodating and is available outside of class whenever you email him. 109B is really tough, but he does explain the topics well. The key to doing well is learning mechanisms and MEMORIZING REACTANTS!!!! Doing that will at least get you a passing grade.
Take him if you will get a C in the class because youll prob be curved up to a B. However if you have a good raw grade, it does not get curved up the same amount as kids with worse grades.
Just absolute Daddy GOAT. He posts lectures and discussion videos online. Goes through the materials thoroughly. Very fair exams and quizzes since he ACTUALLY tests you on the stuff he teaches. Very accessible outside of class as he really tries to establish various ways of contact. Everybody can do well if they really tried. Great Prof, Daddy GOAT
DUDE HOW DOES HE HAVE A 5/5 literally has been off his sh*t these past two quarters:(
Dr. Lewis is by far the best chemistry teacher here. He is so passionate and great at explaining concepts I went from hating and almost failing gen chem to kind of enjoying ochem. He is very caring and responsive to students. The class is a lot of work but if you attend lectures, do textbook readings AND BOOK PROBLEMS you can succeed in this class.
Read the textbook, most of his lectures come directly from it. He's nice, but doing well requires a lot of consistent work.
literally so hard. way harder than other professors. puts stuff on his quizzes that you've never seen before and expects everyone to know it. Averages are always below a 50%. Unhelpful when you ask questions and blames you when he makes mistakes on his worksheets I had to retake and ended up with a B the second time around.
Robert Lewis is seriously one of the best professors here and he really cares about his students. The bad reviews from his class are from those who either got a bad grade or simply didn't put enough time. Organic chemistry is hard in itself, but Lewis' exams/quizzes were always fair. Nothing was unexpected on the exams and do book problems!
When I think of OChem, I think of Dr. Lewis. You have to take this professor if you're taking Ochem here. He is such an amazing professor and his lectures are so concise and easy to understand. Read the textbook, do the book problems, and attend his lectures if you want an A in this course. Ochem is hard, but if you work hard, you're golden. Gluck.
Lewis is a super fair teacher and has the most clear and organized lecture notes. Read the book, do book problems, and worksheets for every chapter and you will 100% succeed. I had Gainer for 109C and he was super disorganized and barley finished teaching the material. If you are choosing between the two take lewis.
Lewis is the GOAT. If you go to his lectures, he does a very good job explaining the material. The class is determined by semi-weekly quizzes and a final (plus a few other easy things to make them weigh less). If you miss class he uploads lecture videos from previous quarters (don't depend on binging these the night before a quiz, it doesn't work)
Best CHEM prof I have ever had. He teaches so well and you can tell he really cares about his students. The exams are pretty straightforward if you keep up with the lectures and do his practice exams. He's really open to talking during his office hours and had no problem discussing how his curve worked and individual grades privately.
Whoever rates Lewis under a 3, didn't work hard enough. He gives you the tools, you have to learn how to use them. I took 109A with him, got a B- & I thought I put in a lottt of work. Compared to my work ethic in 109B, it doesn't compare. He cares a lot and his curves are generous. DO ALL THE READINGs & PRACTICE PROBLEMS. Ochem can be fun, trust.
Professor Lewis is pretty accessible for help outside of class. I did pretty well and would recommend him as the stronger o-chem professor for UCSB.
Lewis is an amazing professor. His forum is a lifesaver!!! He will answer any question you have with paragraphs if necessary. Had him for 109A and B and I can't imagine taking ochem with anyone else. Ochem is a challenging class but Lewis makes it doable.
He is the best professor for ochem hands down! His lectures are clear and he talks in such a calming manner. His tests really are fair, he doesn't try to trick you and he asks things that you should be able to do. Lecture is pretty important, and he often pulls questions from the small details of lecture, so take good notes and make sure to review!
I hated this class and Lewis did not make it any easier. Quizzes were impossible to study for and they were way harder than the practice worksheets. It was also so annoying that he would only give us 1 minute for iClicker questions as soon as class starts. Sometimes the wifi would make it so I couldn't answer on time, but he does not care.
Lewis is amazing. I think he was meant to be an ochem professor, like this was his calling or something. He's clear, fair, direct, and knowledgable. His tests are difficult, but in my opinion COMPLETELY fair, it's just the nature of the class is difficult. Lewis makes this class reasonable and puts in a lot of time to answer questions on the forum.
Hardest chem class I've taken, but that is partially due to my workload this quarter. Lewis is undeniably the best Ochem professor here, but it's still ochem. You WILL fail if you don't put in the work. As everyone has said before, DO THE BOOK PROBLEMS AND GO TO OFFICE HOURS IF YOU NEED HELP.
He is definitely a solid professor, I just feel he's a little overhyped. His lectures are clear cut--he teaches out of the book and you know what it is that he will be covering each day if you do the homework. He answers questions well, but I just feel that he can get stale. Quizzes/tests were challenging very doable. Preferred Gainer.
He's solid, but definitely overhyped. I preferred Gainer for sure - Lewis's tests are a little easier but he doesn't drill it in the same way Gainer did.
5% people got A/A+ and he said the class did pretty well and refused to apply any curve.
Absolutely incredible, you won't find another professor like him.
Most organized and clear instructor I've ever had. Lets you know exactly how to succeed and gives you the tools to do so. Believe the hype. Go with Lewis
Prof. Lewis genuinely cares about your success in the class. There are many ways to get help outside of class - forums on Gauchospace where he will respond with a detailed explanation, office hours, and CLAS. These three resources + book problems will guarantee your success in the class.
Lewis is a great professor, despite the subject's challenges. He equips you with essential tools, you have to choose your own approach. Some require more time to grasp topics, while others need less, but success is attainable with effort. Dedicate as much study time as you need, utilize textbook, and attend office hours.
Had lewis for 109 B/C, & he is one of the best professors I've had at UCSB. I don't understand how he manages to make such a complicated subject so well organized & so much easier to understand. He has the sweetest energy and is so kind. He wore Hawaiian shirts every Friday. He does his best to make Ochem as bearable as possible, & has fair exams.
had him for the whole 109 series, is a great lecturer and provides very useful practice exams before the exams. doing the practice book problems is necessary to succeed on exams. very kind and understanding when you dont complete hw on time and office hours are helpful to clear up confusion. difficult course but put in the time and you're good
Lewis is wonderful and has very clear expectations for what you should know; I never felt like the tests were a surprise. If you can, take it a quarter late (109a in winter instead of fall) as the later quarter gets a greattttt curve that saved me. Put in the time (more than you think you need to) and you'll be rewarded!
RESPONDS TO EVERYTHING Professor Lewis has good lectures and will engage with questions in class to clarify. The class is hard but before exams, looking at the discussion posts is helpful. These posts are remarkable how he responds to all of the 80 questions online, in his own time and they're very helpful
Best professor I've ever had at UCSB. Puts in so much effort if you ask for help (use the discussion forums). Is slow and thorough in his lecture notes which became perfect for studying for tests. Class does so well no curve was needed for on sequence. I wish I could have him for every class :)
Lewis does a good job of relaying the info and providing supplemental videos to go over. I recommend reading the book and doing all the practice problems. Make sure to draw out every mechanism and take no shortcuts. His tests can be hard so make sure you really understand the concepts on the practice midterm. You get what you put in.
Dr. Lewis is a great lecturer, especially given the difficulty of the material he teaches. His tests, grading, and curves are very fair. As long as you go to lecture, study, and do assignments, you will do well. I would recommend reading the book chapter of any confusing material to gain clarity. I would also highly recommend the book problems.
He has 4 exams in one single quarter. He sometimes has class on Monday and tests on Wednesday about including what you just learned on Monday. It's IMPOSSIBLE to do that, especially for Ochem. You must get help from your friends who previously had the class to get good results. If not, you'll probably get a C or lower.
He has 4 exams in one single quarter. He sometimes has class on Monday and tests on Wednesday about what you just learned on Monday, which is IMPOSSIBLE to do especially for Ochem. You must get help from your friends who previously had the class to get good results. If not, you'll probably get a C or lower. He is the best among chem 109 though.
Professor Lewis is by far one of the best teachers I have taken at UCSB. I took him for all of the ochem series. These classes are definitely some of the hardest classes you'll in your second year at school but Lewis manages to simplify and tackle the course extremely well with thorough and neat lectures. Read the book and always ask questions :)
Live laugh love Lewis. His lectures are so clear and follow the textbook almost exactly. He makes himself so accessible, use the discussion forum!! Obviously a hard class but he provides so many resources so success is possible.
Professor Lewis is known for his clear lectures and fair tests. While Organic Chemistry is challenging, he equips you with the right tools. Utilize the textbook, attend office hours, and try unstuck AI for study prep - success is attainable with effort.
Though the content is hard, Lewis does an excellent job of explaining it. You can tell he wants all of his students to be successful! He is extremely easy to reach outside of class, an excellent lecturer, and an overall nice guy. My advice for studying: form lecture groups, do book problems, and attend lectures.
Lewis is a good lecturer but this course was made for giving up your major. I will hate ochem for my whole life
This course was the hardest one I've ever taken in my life. So much work outside of class, with minimal return. So many mechanisms to not only know, but implement in all sorts of different other reactions. Lewis did the best he could do teach the material and respond on Canvas discussion boards, but this class is just so absurdly difficult.
he was so hard and honestly did not prepare you well the only reason people did okay was because of the curve.
Dr. Lewis is a clear, organized lecturer who could probably teach this whole series in his sleep. Tests are difficult but reasonable, and there are lots of resources to help you succeed. My only significant complaint is his seating charts, which take the anonymity out of grades and make most students feel really insecure.
Genuinely everyone I talked to either failed the class, or had no idea what was going on. The curve was insane (I went from a C- to a B+). IDK how this guy can look around, see that MOST of his students are failing, then just change their grades and move on like they will succeed in future classes... Class averages for tests were around 40%. wtf?
OCHEM is definitely tough and requires self-discipline and commitment—you'll feel overwhelmed at times. But Dr. Lewis is one of the best professors out there. He teaches with such clarity and calmness that the material feels more approachable. He's also kind, patient, and genuinely encourages questions.
Although this class was very hard, Lewis is the best teacher I've had at UCSB. It feels like he actually cares about the success of his students, and people only rank him badly because they don't know the difference between a hard professor and a hard class. Don't expect a curve unless you're taking the class a quarter late!
ochem is hard, but lewis is goated
Ochem is hard in general, but Lewis does his best. HIs exams for 109C were not bad, but they were filled with questions that tested specific textbook knowledge, so READ THE TEXTBOOK. He's super responsive/helpful in Canvas discussions, so take advantage of that too. 109C wasn't as bad as 109B, but you still need to work a lot to get a decent grade.
Professor Lewis wasn't horrible but wasn't the best either. He likes to gatekeep his material, doesn't post ANY notes from lecture or any exams taken during the course (only answers). He is very laid back. But I will say that his exams are easier and are very similar to his worksheets. Overall I think he is an okay ochem professor.
I love Lewis with my whole heart. I had him for B and C, and he is an amazing lecturer. Take good notes and go to class! Getting your hands on past exams also helps a lot.
best chem professor at ucsb. makes everything so clear and explains in multiple ways, takes notes with you to make it clear what you need to know, tests are straightforward. final was a little harder but overall way better than gen chem
Great teacher. Just showing up to lecture isn't enough. I don't usually touch textbooks, but in this class the textbook/book problems are your bible. This isn't a suggestion, it's a prescription, unless you want to implode ;P
Lectures are good, tests are hard - it is Ochem. One complaint I have is that Lewis did not point out that he had an entire module on canvas full of review materials and games etc., and my test scores greatly improved after finding that. If you put in extra work more than a week before exams, you will succeed. Lectures were well paced and engaging.
