Young, Energetic & Enthusiastic. Makes a difficult subject bearable.
Doc is the only man alive who can make rocks seem interesting.
Mr. Lopez is a really fun teacher! The class is pretty easy, and he's always willing to help students who need it.
The only teacher who's ever interested me in a science. Incredible teacher, thoroughly prepared, tough tests but no surprises, very nice guy. Highly recommend.
His class was very eazy, i didn't do anything and got a B. His lecturing style isn't the best, i found myself falling asleep most of the time
He's a nice guy and all, but this class is soooooooo boring. Take anything else unless you know the guy.
Fantastic teacher. I agree with everything postive that's been said.
Very hard class and very hard teacher. If you are not a Science/Math person I would not recommend taking this class. Studying Rocks was awful. The Labs are hard but he knows his field
Really good teacher, but midterms are hard. I've got all D's on the midterms, but I got B on the class, because he gives a lot of extra work to do. The best thing I loved is camping and the trip to Monterey. It was so much fun!!!!!!!!!
Great Teacher, nice and made studying rocks somewhat intersting. Field Trips and labs were intersting. Good class to take if you need a lab, would recommend to anyone!
Excellent teacher, knows his stuff. Challenging but fun class. Exams are almost all from study guide; you hv to deduce study guide answers mainly from yr lecture notes. Lab can be difficult but usually hv till following wk to turn in so can get help.
Lopez is willing to help, enjoys his field and is very knowledgable. He is not boring, or too difficult but if you have a bad memory, don't bother taking the class.
Very interesting teacher nows his stuff. easy class as long as you take all the notes and do the study guides, you will get an A.
he is great. take him for this course if its required. do the study guides well and prosper on the tests. he also does great recommendation letters
you can tell when he has had his coffee, so pay attention, write everything down. he can be funny, but tries too hard. he is a great teacher, i look forward to taking more of his classes in the future.
he is a great teacher!!!!! take notes and do all the extra credit!!!he is willing to help you and he know what he is talking about!!! i think you should take his class if you want to learn and get an A!!! I LOVE HIS CLASS!!!
Wasn't really interested in subject but needed science w/ lab. But this class was fun. Lecture was somewhat boring but he made things clear. Lab was 3 hours but time went by. John (lab) was cool & the field trip was fun. STUDY GUIDES help with tests bigtime. I actually rememember material from then!
Mr. Lopez is one of the best teachers ive ever had. Hes very clear, and very smart. he definetely knows his stuff. When he lectures, he writes everything thats lectured on the board. I love that! if you take good notes, and like a funny easygoing guy....lopez is the man!
Great teacher. very clear and very helpful, especially in the labs. take all the notes down and use them to answer study guides and you should at least get a B. gives LOTS of extra credit points. field trip to Carmel was fun!
Amazing proffessor with a knack for putting everything you need to know on the board so you can copy it down to your notes. The multiday field trips are amazing and his son jessie is really cool. Its not easy though you really do have to study everything especially your notes because thats where he takes the tests from. Practice tests are great to
Awesome Teacher. Has an excitement for the subject that pulls you in. The material isn't easy, but something about the way he teaches makes it stick. Recommended for anyone.
I wasn't interested in Geology before I took this class...and now when I have to take Biology with lab I realize how MUCH I ENJOYED Mr. Lopez's class! The teacher is great, very helpfull and passionate about geology what makes lab and a lecture NOT boring :) As long as you take notes and study study questions you should be ok to pass.
This was a great science class with no lab that got me to meet my requirements. Mr Lopez was a great teacher and provided useful lectures without being bored to death. The best part about the class was the interesting field trips you got to go on. We went to the bay and pulled up fish and other sea life. And DONT MISS THE CAMPING TRIP! Best class field trip ive ever taken. You get to know everyone in the class (that goes of course) and its interesting too.
Very difficult class, I dont know how anyone is expected to grasp all that information in one semester. Goof luck if you take it.
Easy Class, but need to attend on a regular basis and minimal study will get you a C for sure.
He was great. Sorry I missed the field trip. And yes you can tell when he's had to much coffee.
I love this professor. Class is hard, lots of materials, but he maneges to make it easy for students. Has lots of extra credit, extremely helpful, loves his work and he is kind, kind person. One of my best instructors in West Valley
he def needs to cut back on the coffee cuz my arm falls off after taking his notes, def buy a 3 subject notebook for his class for all those notes, hes a really nice guy though and i had waay too much extra credit cuz i went on all the field trips, tests are kinda hard but as long as you do the study guides u'll do ok.Makes you stay most of the lab
Mr. Lopez is GREAT!!! He really Loves his ROCKs!!! He makes class fun!!! You work in groups and take field trips...really fun... Be sure to sit up front and take down everything he writes down...it will be on the exams...Study and you'll past easy and intresting...Take his class you like it...
Mr. Lopez is the best teacher I've had at West Valley. You know he loves his job and his subjects! Take down all the notes because it's all covered in tests. The study guides and practice exams are extremely helpful! Definately go on the field trips because they are fun learning trips. This class is a cinch if you can follow along. Take him!
Good teacher. Fair and not too much work. Very nice guy overall.
One of the nicest professors, but extremely hard to follow. He talks quicker than an auctioneer and writes more info than a court reporter. If you take his class make sure to interrupt him to slow down or you'll be crushed under the weight rock information, no pun intended.
I agree with most of the comments here. Mr Lopez is awesome!!! He kept the class interesting and is very fair. Just take your notes, do the study questions and you'll be fine. Take his class!! Great, great teacher :)
By far one of my favorite teachers EVER!! Lopez loves Rocks! He gives a lot of notes, which in my opinion is a very GOOD thing. He also gives extra credit. I used to not be interested in Geology, but now I am registering for his 06' Winter Geology 15 class only because he makes Geology fun! All you have to do is pay attention and you'll get an "A"!
best teacher i have ever had! seriously take this teacher if you want to have FUN and LEARN at the same time! Guaranteed A if you take notes.
Lopez is a great professor..really loves his job and geology..I really didn't want to take geol but he made it very interesting and fun..get to go on field trips..exams are easy, just make sure you take notes and do the study guides and also make sure to ckeck out the smaple exams on his web page..Overall great teacher and great class!!!!
lopez is a cool teacher. very nice knows his stuff. but one thing that got me was the mass amount of notes he gives and he goes very fast! so youve gotta keep up with him, but other than that, he as a a decent teacher. not bad, id recommend him to anyone
The class isn't that much fun, but for the most part, Dr Lopez is a cool guy. Just take good notes in class and do the study guides and you should be fine. When you ask him questions about things he'll usually go through the whole process of doing the question or problem with you.
Awesome teacher! Geology is definitely not my course but, Dr. Lopez was extremely helpful. Go to him during office hrs and he will be more than willing to explain and clarify!
awesome teacher! hes so nice
Very helpful instructor. Take notes as they make up most of items on the test. Also, go on all field trips to get all the points you can. Fun class.
Good class overall, he explains a lot it's hard to write everying he writes and listen at the same time so ask quesions and tell him slow down, but he's a good teacher get to go on field trips.
Lopez is a cool teacher, very nice & extremely helpful. Fieldtrips are fun and worth alot of points so definitely go. Lots of people did badly in my class because they slacked off and took advantage of the laid back atmosphere. Take good notes and pay attention & you will do great.
I took him for Geology of CA. Since I wasn't interested in Geology, the class was kinda boring. But he is a great teacher. He loves his job. We went on many fieldtrips. Take notes in class and study those for the exams. I would def. recommend his class if you need a science class.
Dr. Lopez is very nice, but it was very hard for me to follow the class. I was confused half the time and tests were quite hard.
Well geology isnt the most interesting topic (actually its extremely boring) but mr. Lopez trys to make it interesting. He is super nice and a really great guy. Just show up to class, do the homework, and go to the field trips and you will definitely get an A.
Overall, I would recommend taking this class. The subject matter can be interesting and he is definitely very knowledgeable about the topic. Sometimes he comes off condescending but he's a pretty nice and cool guy. Going to class is pretty much a must to get the information for hw/tests Do the work and put in some effort you should get an A, no prob
The was horrible. Late to class almost every day! Lectures were hard to follow...he really needs to learn to make an outline...hw was hard to do b/c he would not always complete a lecture before giving hw. I do not recommend him at all
Mr lopez is really good but one thing is he loves to write write write on the board the whole lecture u WRITE n MOre write take notes LOts of hw LOts!!
- Gives studyguides for HW- easy 10pts. 50?+- exams. Quizes are straight from the book as far as answers go very easy. Lots of notes but will help for exams. go to class do the study guides and field trips. UCSC and Alum Rock park. very easy handout he gives. This teacher is VERY COOL. everyone in my class loved him!!! I took for WINTER session!
One of the hardest teachers I've had in a while. Lectures are random lines of information with no connection to one another, so note-taking is useless and incomprehensible. I made it out alive based on my math skills.
This class is weird, because it's nearly impossible but it's still really fun. Mr. Lopez is a cool guy, most of the time anyways. However, the labs we do are impossible and only people with autism could understand some of the things he teaches us. But I still really enjoy this class, there is plenty of good information to be learned here.
Sometimes his lectures can be a little hard to understand, but if you go up and ask him a question one-on-one, he is very knowledgeable and helpful. Weekly homework forces you to do your reading and stay on track (which is very helpful). Most tests are online (open notes)! Also, he completely clarifies anything you don't understand in labs!
Fast pace, a lot of Note taking, and I can't handle it. Mr. Lopez seems nice just that I can't handle it :)
Took into Geology with him. He is very hard. Lots and lots and lots of notes. He speaks so fast you cant hear him. All tests based on notes. I had to buy the stupid book thats crazy expensive and he doesnt use it. Not an easy grader. He is a very nice guy but pass on this class if you can. It helps if you are a cute girl.
This professor is one of the best instructors I've ever had.
I took this for winter session. He's a really good teacher and the class is a pretty easy A. Just show up everyday and take notes (the answers to the homework are almost all in the notes), read the book for quizzes, and study the homework and lecture notes for tests
Had a great time in his class. I would take his other classes if I wasn't going for a different major.
He is a really nice guy and he totally helps all of his students. Class is fun!
One of the best teachers I've had since attending West Valley. He's very passionate about what he teaches and he takes time to actually answer whatever questions you have. His tests/quizzes were easy as long as you kept up with notes and lab assignments. Everything is straight forward and simple.
Dr. Lopez is hands down the BEST professor I have ever had in my entire life. I was immediately taken with the subject, changing my major from Art to Geology! He was so helpful, encouraging, and provided opportunities for me to learn outside of class. He is fast-paced and challenging, but extremely easy to talk to. He completely changed my life.
Professor Lopez is very passionate about his career. Class is easy if you keep up with the readings. Take this course if you can!! The only negative thing I have to say is that there are a lot of quizzes. Otherwise, the class is actually pretty easy and straight forward. I enjoyed it!
Great professor! His expectations are clear. There are a lot of labs, but they aren't too hard. The material is interesting and his teaching style makes understanding it reasonable. Best Geology teacher at West Valley. Highly recommended for Geology. He knows his stuff.
Geology isn't interesting at all. In my opinion at least but Professor Lopez makes it bearable. He makes the subject interesting that you actually want to attend class. Homework is very easy. Attend class for lecture points and definitely attend the field trip! He also gives study guides for exams.I recommend him, he is very passionate.
I took his summer class. It was crazy fast paced, so I drank tons of coffee beforehand to keep up and did well. He's an AMAZING teacher. After taking his class I LOVED geology. The lectures were interesting, field trip an experience of a lifetime and he's very helpful! Very receptive to questions, (after lectures) because there is a LOT of info.
WOW! Dr. Lopez is just an amazing teacher. I have so much respect for him. He has PASSION. He is excited for what he teaches. He is really inspiring. His class is easy. If you do the online quizzes, homework, and labs. You'll pass! He also offers extra credit ( FUN EC ). You should take Dr. Lopez. You will not regret it. We did use the book for lab
I couldn't speak highly enough of this class to do Mr. Lopez justice. The camping trip was one of the best things I've done in college. The class is super challenging but in a cool and interesting way. I learned so much and it's easily my favorite class.
Take his class online and its pretty easy to get an A. Need to take notes from his online lectures. Quizze comes from your textbook, and exams come from lecture notes and some from the handouts. 4 exams and he drops the lowest one. His class is a lilttle time consuming but not a hard A. If you take the field trip, you will have extra 30 points.
Dr. Lopez's lectures are super long and he talks really fast. However, as long as you do all of your homework and show up to class, you should get an A. He is pretty lenient- allows notes on the exams, and re-do's on the exams if the class does badly. 2 of the exams are online via Angel.
He is very funny and helpful. I love it how he is very passionate about his job and willing to help you with anything. You don't want to miss lab cause it's a lot of points and he won't let you redo it. Tests are usually multiple choices. Do reading quizzes and take notes and you'll pass.
Robert Lopez is an excellent instructor and demonstrates the true qualities of how a professor should be. He is respectful and his lectures, course material, course content, homework assignments, exams, and quizzes are fair and understandable.
This (online) class was probably one of the more do-able tougher classes I have ever taken. He really challenges you to really read, learn, and to understand the subject! Granted, it's tough, but it's for a good reason. Tests were a little hard, but reading the chapter(s) and taking notes will help a lot.
He is a great teacher. He knows his stuff. He talks real fast so you really need to take notes. and if you miss one class you will miss out on ALOT . He is very passionate about what he teaches. you get to go on a field trip and get extra points too. out of 4, 2 tests are online. The online material is updated. I recommend this class for anyone :)
Lopez is super chill and understanding. Very solid teacher for an intro to ocean class. Although, there is a lot of material (especially in beginning weeks) but he gives out E.C. assignments along with lots of help in the labs. Definitely recommend this teacher.
Overall he was a great teacher but he gives a lot of homework which is on canvas and Smartwork but usually those quizzes were the same so it was like taking a quiz and doing the homework twice. Talks really fast sometimes in lectures and jumps around but seems very passionate about the subject.
This was one of the best classes I've ever taken. I took Ocean10 with a lab and he made it so much fun for someone who doesn't enjoy science very much. My group and I stuck together throughout the class and passed with an A. The class isn't based off on just exams so it makes it so much better. We built a great relationship with him. Highly rec!
Warning: if you don't care much about geology, don't take geo15. It is an easy course but requires a lot of work (3-5 assignments a week). Since its Cali Geo, it gets very specific and thus very boring if geology isn't your thing. You have to watch all the lectures for the exams which is dreadful for all of us non-geology people. Just fair warning!
The labs are pretty fun and interesting. Go to class, do all the work in class, take the online quizzes, do the study guides, they help with the exams, and you will pass the class. Over all he is a great teacher and clearly loves the subject and his job, he's super understanding
I took this class online (actually, I'm still taking it). I'm taking the summer course, so its condensed. The lectures are super informative. He knows his Geo and has a way of getting me interested, even though I wasn't initially. Super nice teacher, do your work, watch ALL the lectures and DO the study guides and the tests will be easy.
This class was tough for me, but if you watch his letcures and take good notes, you will do fine! The answers to the test are in his lectures, so I was more dependent on letctures than the book when it came to studying for the exams. But you will need the book, so make sure you get it!!! Oh yeah, great passionate professor! I hate geo but got an A!
Robert was such a great online professor, his class was simple and the assignments were not difficult to keep up on. I had a problem with ordering the online lab kit and he was nice enough to give me a chance to catch up on everything. The only minus is how expensive materials are for the class but it's still worth it.
Lopez is a solid professor and is super passionate about his line of work. Though the class is super difficult to follow, you will only succeed if you find a study group. He always gives pop quizzes, but mostly bases them on participation. Tests and quizzes are a lot of work. Class is fairly interesting and he tries hard to make things fun.
95 total tasks for this class. 13 virtual field trips (GeoTours). 14 HW assignments. 4 exams. 19 Reading Quizzes. 11 Visual Quizzes. 6 Science in Society Quizzes. 11 GeoDE Activity quizzes. 4 Discussions. 13 At home labs. About 50-70 points extra credit. All assignments are open for entire semester. 6-7 task due per week. Lenient w/ deadlines.
I took his GEOL15 class online over winter. Make sure that you are able to dedicate as much time as needed to it, since there were 7-8 assignments due every 3 days, including quizzes. I tried to take another online simultaneously and had to drop this one simply because I could not keep up. It's more doable over spring, only 3-4 assignments a week.
Lopez is a great person, very passionate and knowledgeable in his fields. However, his style of teaching was eclectic at best. He speaks fast, jumps from topic to topic, and is overall extremely disorganized. It was excruciating to take notes in his class. Up to 5 online assignments due every week, though most of the material can be found online.
I really enjoyed this class at first I hated the thought of taking geology but his material is really easy to understand if you watch the videos he posts of each subject. This really helped me when studying for exams and also answers most of study guide. His notes and lectures can be hard to follow but if you honestly ask him he will more than help
Professor Lopez is genuine and cares about his students. He lectures every class for the whole lecture period and you have to write fast! He is full of information and is always glad to help students when they are unsure. He is available whenever you need him. He has a few extra credit opportunities, but tests are easy and straightforward.
GEOL 1A was a Hybrid course, which is lectures/chapters are conducted online, whereas labs are on campus, every Thursdays (2pm-4:40pm). Although Scientific Inquiry isn't my forte, but Earth Science made the engagement and cooperation amazing! Try to get office hours from Lopez, at least twice per month. He'll always be happy to guide everything.
He cares about helping you learn the subject matter. He gives a lot of feedback and chances to learn and try again. You can tell that he really knows and love geology.
He's a great teacher. He cares about helping the students learn. Just watch the lectures they're the most important part.
I dont know if its because its a online class, but the tests are way too hard plus all the labs and quizzes that need to be done. I need the class to graduate and it seems like I dont like rocks as much as him so Im not completely invested in it. Just make sure to do everything he states and it shouldnt be too bad.
If you do the assignments and especially the study questions, you will pass his class. Reading the textbook is helpful but not by much. I did not read the book and only watched his lectures/did labs and had over a 100%.
Hes a good teacher. But this class was sent from hell. I hated every second of it. If youre not into rocks and landforms this is torture. I regret taking this class and I have to spend hours on the homework and tests to get a good grade. You can pass easily if u put in the time. I am not interested in it so thats probably why its sucks for me.
Good class for if youre into geology, not a good class if youre like me and just taking it for science requirement. Homework and quizzes are fairly easy but he makes the tests unnecessarily difficult; you will not be able to google the answers.
This was the most miserable class I've been in. Take the course syllabus literally--you WILL have to dedicate about 9 hours per week for this class. I will personally stomp on any historical site I come across just because of my time in this class. This class was my villain origin story. Professor was nice but this course is designed sadistically.
This may have been one of the hardest courses I've ever taken. Professor Lopez seems like a nice person, but the workload is insane! You will spend 9 to 10 hours a week on this course, lots of assignments and insanely hards exams. If possible take another professor
He's a very nice professor and responds to emails in a timely manner. I took his winter course and it was a heavy workload but I think that is to be expected when you condense a semester course into 3.5 weeks. If you do all of the assignments/quizzes then you should pass the class. The exams are also primarily based on the lectures.
He is a nice guy; very passionate about the subject. However, poor course design for students in the pandemic. Overabundance of assignments, additionally on exam weeks. Textbook is free but only 30% useful. At-home labs (7+ pages long) done with little to no help from lab videos. Lectures are disorganized, hard to follow. Tests based on lectures.
He walks you through most of the labs, almost giving you the answer, his assignments are easy to understand and straightforward. Just make sure to take the quizzes, read the free textbook, do chapter work, and look at the lab videos (online course) to get an Easy A. as long as you put a bit of effort in, you'll pass no problem.
I went in thinking this class would be tedious and boring but ended up absolutely loving it thanks to Prof Lopez. He made the subject really interesting and seemed to truly care. He was always willing to offer extra help and was generally a really accommodating and understanding person. The textbook was also free online and provided by Prof Lopez.
Professor gives out ridiculous amounts of work. 60% of the time, the textbook is beyond useless, esp for exams. Also, be prepared to read a ton. In his syllabus, it said you need to commit 9-10 hours a week.. I'm currently avg 18+ hours for this class. Good luck on exam week. Exams + around 6-8 assignments due are unreasonable and ridiculous.
This professor is a great and understanding professor. This class is VERY intensive. I struggled this semester and he was willing to let me finish my numerous late assignments in. As long as he knows that you actually want to do the work, he is willing to work with you to catch up and make up stuff you missed. Lecture is super important.
Really nice professor and caring. He is not a harsh grader at all and wants everyone to try their best. There is a good amount of homework/assignments due weekly but they are all straight forward and easy to understand.
Show up to the labs, they are very easy and fun since you get to work in groups for most of them. He is such a funny and easy-going teacher. He made our night class this semester so much fun I was actually bummed when I missed class. If you are looking for an oceanography teacher this is your guy. Free textbook and lab book. Just attend and learn!
He's super passionate about the subject and it shows in his lectures. Lot's of HW, but it's not difficult and he is a very generous grader. He's willing to make extensions on labs and offers a couple extra credit options throughout the semester. His tests & final is long, but straightforward and pulled right from the lectures and textbook.
Amazing professor! - Was very understanding with missing work - Lectures were not boring - Labs were interesting - Flexible grading - Wants you to succeed in the class
The best professor at WVC! Take him!! He makes learning fun and genuinely wants to see you do well. He's very flexible and understanding. He's passionate about teaching.
I took Professor Lopez for Geology 1A. The book is online so you do not need to buy it. If you watch all of lectures and the lab videos, you will do just fine in this class. Professor Lopez does a great job in explaining the Labs. Very homework heavy but if you stay ontop of it, you should not have an issue. I recommend taking this class.
Dr. Lopez was okay. I will say if you're passionate about learning about the Geology of California, take him, but if you're like me and need it to complete GE requirements, then don't. You MUST watch his lectures and read chapters to pass quizzes and exams. Overall, he was okay and didn't have a negative or positive experience.
Dr. Lopez is an amazing professor. At first, I was completely dreading the courses' required reading, quizes and homework. However, after applying the necessary study hours, I was amply rewarded with good grades and learned more about geology than I ever imagined! You'll need to take assiduous notes to do well. Serious yet highly rewarding course.
Great guy who has multiple videos explaining well how things work. I took him only online but workload was not bad and chapters were easy to understand.
Very enjoyable class and awesome professor! You will have to pay attention and take detailed notes to get a good grade, but the lecture videos are engaging and you can tell Professor Lopez is passionate about the subject. If you get the chance, go on the class field trip! It's such a memorable experience, I definitely recommend it.
Professor Lopez is passionate about the subject, but the class can be challenging. Definitely stay on top of assignments and use resources like the free textbook and unstuckstudy to help with study prep. Overall, a solid class if you put in the work.
Quizzes & exams are directly based on the textbook and lectures, sometimes word for word. Stay on top of the work and you'll easily succeed in this class. He's a fast grader and he makes learning about unique geology fun. Would 100% recommend this class.
Took Robert for Geology of California over the Winter Semester and he was amazing. His lectures were clear, and engaging, and he enjoys teaching the class. He offered two field trips during a totally asynchronous course to further your learning. Wish I had taken it over the full semester as it was too short and felt a little rushed as it was a lot.
Easy and fun class. Lots of time to be social, and the work is relatively easy. Professor Lopez makes learning simple, and he helps you prepare for tests by basically giving you the answers to the questions in the review lecture prior to the test. Extremely kind professor, and made me think that geology is actually pretty neat.
overall this class was just busy work. you could knock out a month of work in 3 days. look at the online textbook and the intro lab in order to do well on the tests, prelab quizzes, and exercises. labs got harder towards the end but it is what it is.
havent finished this class yet, but the amount of work he gives is insane. Two assignments a week should be enough, why do we need 4-5?? otherwise, nice professor. would not take again.
