Best History teacher ever! Seriously. He posts all of his lecture notes onto the Internet-making it really easy to write the 3 essays that he gives. No other homework, just reading and a few essays- the class is still challenging though so don't think you can slack off. His teaching style keeps you interested and wanting more-overall topnotch!
Mr.Maddock is an awesome history teacher. He is so passionate for history, so he makes history interesting, and I dont even really like it! There are no tests, only essays, but as long as you research you will do fine! Great teacher
Good teacher!!! I like his teaching style. It is not easy to write essay, but it is very helpful and easy to remember what you wrote, you will remember what you research all time.
The Best teacher ever. I highly recommend this teacher for the history class.
I loved the way this teacher lectured! However, the only thing he graded on was 3 exams, which was hard. Overall- This teacher was great!

I found that 3 essays was pretty easy. The class was fenomenal. Prof. Maddock simply rocks! I wish other professors learn from him. Thank you very much. A.M.
A great instructor with a rather unique lecture style. Material is often insightful and he is nice. Would like a bit more interaction between he and the class but nor worries. Be ready for approx. 30+ pages of essay to earn your grade. Recommend!!!
Prof Maddock was a real good teacher who knew what he was talking about. He is so in passion with history and that helps you a lot.You do not need taking notes, since he gives you the lect. notes upfront. Your final grade is based on 3essays+1 term paper. A lot of writing, but no quizzes or exams. Easy A for me, but I like writing.. so its up to you
Professor Maddock is a great teacher. I loved his style of teaching. He never take roles, so basically you don't get any attendace points, this is the only thing bad about him. You have to write 3 or 4 essays and if you screw on them, you will not get A or B even though its an easy class. Some stupid who never showed up got A's because of their
Mr. Maddock gives a unaltered perspective on history. I have had teachers that swing history to fit their political ideolog, but he is not like that. He tells it like it is.
This class was great! Mr. Maddock gives you the outlines for his powerpoint lectures, so you really just have to sit and listen. There are 3 take-home essays and two short novels to read - no textbook! He is so passionate about teaching, NEVER boring, and a total crack-up. I highly recommend his Recent US History class!!! Maddock is awesome!
this class was a joke. there are no objective tests. he basically just gives out 3 essays for the midterm and final exam and one for a term paper. grading to is bias since everything is subjective and i would not recommend anyone to take this class if they want to actually learn something. if you buy the books you wont even use them! DONT TAKE HIM!
Maddock is cool. He knows history, and gives good lectures that have a good perspective. He's smart and tells you more than the same old rap on historical events. He's kinda tough on the essay grading, but thats why you gotta have your game tight. No Homework is the best part. Take him.
If you go to the classes and just listen to the lectures you will learn so much. He makes the lectures really interesting, and you are able to do the mid term and final by a essay. And the "text" books are actually novels that a cool to read. Great teacher!!!
i took 307 and 308. there are 2 exams. 4 promts to choose 1 to 2 weeks to do. and a report as a find. you can choose a topic. all writen assingments are 4-5 non double spaced. you do not need to go to class but it is helpful. power pts can be printed and he lectures off of it. great teacher
I really liked this guy! The class is three hours long which was really tough and on the 3 essays I actually did better with using his powerpoint from his site than my own notes, but he is really interesting. I'd take this class for an easy A, and dont worry if you get waitlisted, just show up and hell put you on. It thins out eventually.
Good teacher. No attendence taking. About as fair as you can get. Tough grader, have fun trying to get an A
I'd definitely recommend Maddock for anyone taking history. He's easily the most interesting and entertaining lecturer that I've seen. He doesn't take role, and your grade is entirely based on three essays. That doesn't mean that the class is easy, as he grades tough and the essays take a lot of work and research. Not a class for bad writers.
nice man, he basically just lectures and you don't have homework or tests, just essays at the end that are all done by attending the lectures. he doesn't even take role, so its pretty cool. i got a C because i missed a couple of days, but it wasn't really that hard.
very clear of expectations!! just attend class, listen to what he says, take notes and then write the 2 essay Q's on them. There is one term paper on anything that interests you. Showing up and listening to the lectures really helps!! I never showed an interest in history till i took this class!! he makes it fun to learn!!
Essay exams, but when you get them back, he gives you a grade with a pre-printed list of what that grade might mean. (ie: b="good") No comments on the paper itself. I've always aced essays. I'm a hist major. This man couldn't even spell "showed: in the email he sent me. He told me I needed to be more descriptive. He should do the same.
Very intelligent and attentive. The best teacher, lectures are interesting -very respectful.Cares about students. No stress and makes students feel free.
Pretty boring powerpoint lectures. You need to either bring a laptop or a tape recorder to class to use his lectures on your essays (3 total). No homework required, no tests or quizzes, just 2 exam question essays and 1 term paper. he can be nice if you keep him in a good mood.
Wish he'd buy a new pair of shoes They squeek
Good teacher. he does a good job at holding your attention. Very helpful and actually wants to be there.
Professor Maddock was great. He lectures the whole class, so bring a laptop or a voice recorder. The only assignments in the class are three essays which are four to five pages long single spaced. It can be pretty challenging at times, but if you take amazing notes then you will be just fine! I definitely recommend taking Prof Maddock for history.
I do not recommend this class, all you do is listen to boring lectures and write essays where he tells you to be more specific but then you do that and it is still wrong. Very unhelpful.
Maddocks's a pretty straightforward teacher. He lectures all the time and more often than not, his lectures are interesting. He's not very biased, either. There are two tests, which are take home essays and a term paper at the end of the semester. It's a fairly simple class. As long as you put your best foot forward, you should do well.
Do not recommend. His lectures are mostly good, but his communications with students is poor. His grading is also very unfair, you can do everything he asked for and still get low grade, without any explanation.
Mr. Maddock is such a great teacher. His powerpoints are very hard to understand without being in class and recording the lectures. As long as you go to class, take notes, RECORD the lectures, and turn in the three essays its the easiest A you'll ever get.
Very smart man who understands the why and how and the who and what, but focuses on the former which makes this history class truly meaningful and something that a student can take a lot from. Take great notes, 3 essays = ur entire grade. Maddocks good but u have to be a good student to do well.
His method of grading seems very unfair. He has a general outline for possible grades on papers and gives your paper a grade with the attached outline. There is only maybe one sentence written of his opinion of your paper, there are no personal examples of how your work doesn't meet his expectation. Only a general outline paper attached.
The fact that Maddock uses a self-proclaimed historian's book rather than a real one along with learning the foundation of wonderful corporations like McDonald's(how is that history?) weaved in to the lectures made this class severely lacking in credibility. Framing statements like "John Lennon was a socialist, like Hitler." made me want to hurl.
To know: If you like history; Take this class. If you're not a good writer; Don't take this class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but come anyway, you'll miss out on a lot.
Very good teacher take this class. No stress.Learned a lot from his lectures, very interesting.
If you love history take this class. If not, find something else. His teaching method is 95% slide show lectures. 3 Essays = your semester grade. If you read the book for the essays you're OK. He's very knowledgeable but I found him incredibly dull & his jokes aren't funny. He's like the really nice, boring old uncle you see on Thanksgiving.
I loved this class!! He was very nice and willing to help if you need it
He is a very interesting guy who knows a lot about history. His lectures are interesting if you can stay engaged. Your grade is based on 3 essays, that is it. I would take his class again.
Im not a huge fan of Hist. But having him as a teacher made me become interesting. If you take good notes, listen, use extreme discription in your essays you are good to go. He is super nice and funny. Definitely a teacher I would retake a class with
He was a very knowledgeable guy who was interesting to listen to. However, he is a very stiff grader and your grade is based on only 3 essays. He will only give A's to extreme levels of work. I graduated from FLC with a math and science degree. I received A's in every class in college except his. I got a B in his class.
Don't be fooled and think this is an easy class because your grade is based on three papers. It is actually the complete opposite. If you are okay with a C, take this class. Otherwise, it will be very hard to get anything else. Not recommended if you want to actually keep a high GPA.
Record his lectures! He has his PowerPoints on his website so taking notes from the PowerPoint is useless. Print them, take notes on what he is saying and record it! Most of the information you'll need for the essays is in what he says.
Surprisingly difficult grader and he doesn't really leave good feedback on essays (I received three vague statements at the end on a 4pg, single spaced paper). I felt like his assignments were somewhat vague. Make sure you take your outlines to him in class and see what he thinks, otherwise it will be impossible to receive a high grade.
He is a good teacher. He is always willing to help and explain things further. He doesn't take role, so attendance isn't mandatory. He doesn't do any tests, there are 3 essays and a final. If you pay attention, the essays are easy. The essays are take home, so there's minimal pressure.
Interesting class, but overall poorly structured. The whole class is based on 3 essays, so if he doesn't like you're writing style, you're toast. Attendance is optional, but absolutely necessary for a good grade. I don't recommend it unless you have A LOT of time to spend those essays.
Different than any other History Pro. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Must Haves in His Class:(based on my experience)1. Get your books in Electronic Form 2. RECORD HIS LECTURES and ALL VIDEOS HE PLAYS, even if they seem irrelevant; EVERYTHING he says can be helpful 3. Only 3 essays & Final; No homework, No tests or quizzes. Always ask if anything is unsure
I got an "A" in this class. There are three books which consist of (2) novels, and the textbook (Paul Johnson's History of America). The novels are: Shaara's "Killer Angels" and Hillerman's "Thief of Time." He does not take attendance and there are no tests. He does however require (2) essays during the semester and (1) term paper.
I had him for world history (308), and the class he taught us was more like "history of a few European countries". In other words it was a very Eurocentric class. The book he requires is cheap, but utterly useless, I bought a different textbook and that was the only thing that saved me. Find a different history professor.
This teacher REALLY knows what he's talking about. If you are interested in learning about history would absolutely recommend taking him. Grade consists of 3 4-5 page single spaced papers which can be tedious but overall not bad. Doesn't take attendance so i barely showed up and got a B. Lectures are full of interesting storiesinfo
The lectures in his class are rather long & kind of boring but the information is relatively interesting if you're into European history. Attendance isn't required. Your entire grade is based upon 3 essays (4-5 pages single-spaced) and he doesn't give much feedback on how to improve them. Class is structured poorly, but he's a good guy - I got a B.
ENJOYS HISTORY AND KNOWS HIS MATERIAL. ATTENDANCE IS NOT MANDATORY. CLASS IS BASED ON THREE ESSAY'S. DOES NOT GIVE A GRADING RUBRIC FOR ESSAY. RECOMMEND COMING IN ON WRITING DAY TO SHOW AN OUTLINE AND HE WILL GIVE YOU FEEDBACK. RECORD HIS LECTURES THEY HELP WITH YOUR PAPERS.
Great story teller. Down to earth. No HW. Grade is based on 3 essays. As long as you record the lecture and rephrase the lecture on your paper, you should be fine.
Very chill and laid back class. Just show up to listen to the stories and write about them. But he wants lots of examples which he are included in his lectures.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH THIS PROFESSOR. I came into this class all excited when he said that your whole grade was based off of 3 papers. What I didn't know was the level of knowledge (that he did not provide you with) that was needed for writing the papers. Please be smarter than I was and find a different professor if you want to learn/pass!
Literally all you have to do is record his lectures and then you can write about exactly what he said. I've taken him twice now and it really is not that bad except for that he repeats his stories and jokes. Plus attendance is basically optional.
He's a great professor. It was a little easy with only 3 papers due. You just need to make sure you take great notes. No, you don't need to record the lectures. Just write well and get your point across. You'll have to write 4-5 pages single space. That's a lot and you have to be a big boy/girl and not repeat yourself. You will get an A
Very knowledgeable and approachable. Two essay tests and one term paper. I recorded the lectures and it helped me with the essay tests. He posts all the lecture highlights in Word, so you can download them and add to them during the lecture on your laptap or tab. I'll be be taking his 314 class.
Maddock's class was graded by 3 papers which were based off everyday lectures. There is really no class participation. I learned quite a bit from his class, and history is definitely my worst subject. This isn't your standard history class, but it is interesting.
Didn't take roll, but you don't want to miss out on the awesome lectures! That is where the information is. Wasn't overwhelmed with weekly assignments, but instead had a few papers throughout the semester. Really does care and wants you to pass, but also makes sure students know that it is their responsibility to do so! Super professional!
Professor Maddock really brings history to life through helping students look beyond what happened, but why, how, and whether or not there is an obvious irony in historical occurrences. I really love this class!
Record his lectures and refer them for papers. If there are challenges, please approach him and he will help.
This class is good but not for everyone. The grade is based off only 3 written assignments, and the grading is tough. The class is about vague concepts rather than specific events, so it's kinda like APUSH with less things to memorize. You have to be a very good writer to get an A. There is no homework but you have to manage yourself with reading.
His lectures and teaching are fine enough. But neither myself nor any others I knew in this class understood his grading criteria. You are graded by 3 essays, but the way he grades them is unclear. I am a strong essay writer but got a C- on my first one in this class. Ended up with a C in the class when I was just about to transfer with a 4.0 gpa.
Not responsive at all to emails, asks for 5-6 page single spaced essays, syllabus is a mess. Do not recommend.
This was one of my last classes before transferring and ruined my 4.0. The lectures are posted as monotone audio files that just confuse you even more. There's only 3 assignments: all 5-6 page, single spaced papers that will make you want to rip your hair out. The material is so dry and incomprehensible that even Google couldn't help me.
Prof Maddock does bring history to life. To get a good grade, record his lecture and literally transcribe his lecture to the papers Easy A. This is a very intriguing class I think it is because of his story telling ability.
Took this class for GE credit. I am a straight-A student with the exception of this class. :( Very anxiety-provoking. - Only assignments for the whole semester are 3 essays (each one 5-6 pages long, single-spaced) - VERY long PowerPoint lectures with inconvenient audio set-up - Syllabus/Canvas is very confusing - Grading criteria unclear
Although this class does not have a great set up, Maddock does a great job at lecturing. Listen to the audios, follow along on the power points. It'll take a while, but take good notes so you aren't scrambling during the essays. Don't stray too far from the lecture info when writing essays. Tough class, but you'll learn a lot.
Okay y'all. This is a great class. You don't need to be a great writer to get an A, just pay attention the lectures, take good notes, and base your essays off of your notes. For the term paper, do something that you have an actual interest in so you will enjoy it. I read the reviews and was really scared, but I pulled off an A, you can too.
Great Professor. Course grade relied on three 6 page papers. If you pay attention to his lectures and take the time to write the papers you'll ace the class.
He's a tough grader & there are only 3 papers due in this class. They're each about 6 pages minimum, single spaced. Keep up with the lectures, read what you need to, take notes, and you'll be fine. Check for due dates & write them down; he doesn't assign them on Canvas so they don't show up on the "To-Do" list. Add LOTS of details to your essays!
His lectures aren't focused on overall history from the 1500s, but rather a handful of specific things he wants to talk about. The textbook is huge, but I hardly used it for the three papers that make up your grade. His lecture power points are separated from the audio, and he doesn't use modules. Making it hard to finds things at first.
the lectures were great and the professor is an amazing story teller. i got very stressed about being graded on only three papers since there was no personal contact w/ the professor and essays can feel more open to interpretation. i got As on all 3 papers though, just make sure u reference specific details and material from the lectures & ur fine
The layout he uses on Canvas can be odd, but once you figure it out it's alright. Take really good notes and the only assignments are two exam essays and a term paper with a topic of your choice. It was kind of hard for me because you complete the course at your own pace and keep up with deadlines, but if you make your own deadlines it's doable.
The materials for this class are very straightforward. Two exam papers and one term paper, (5 pages minimum). All material is found on the front page link on Canvas. You go at your own pace, but the lectures are very long and heavy. Make sure you pay attention to all details. Do NOT fall behind on getting your research done for the essays.
I took Prof Maddocks class in 2019. There was a lot of lecture, and it was easy to zone out. He was a fun professor otherwise! Lots of reading required.
I took Professor Maddock's online summer course, and the reading consisted of two books and a decent-sized textbook. He gives the choice between 3 prompts for the midterm and final papers, and free reign with the term paper as long as it's relevant. Available outside of class and responsive. Make sure to include good examples and you're golden!
The lectures are word heavy and hard to follow. There is often background noise (him clearing his throat, dogs barking, bells, his phone going off) which makes it even harder to follow. He is a hard grader and does not have a rubric for clear expectations. Do not get behind, and be extremely specific and thorough in the essays.
Horrible Professor, He doesn't give clear instructions, and doesn't give any feedback on essays. For the online class, he does his lectures through confusing audio files. There are only three assignments and they are graded harshly with no feedback on what you did wrong. But his choice of books was very interesting and worth reading.
Slides and lessons are always contradicting themselves. Not a tech savvy teacher, requires that all assignments be turned into by email rather then actually using the Canvas functions such as the modules, to-do, or other useful tools as used by other professors. Unclear instructions and a very contradictory style of teaching which impedes learning.
Overall he was ok. Just 3 papers that are 6 pages each single space expect (4000 words). You are given 16 weeks to do all that but it would be easier if it was divided into small sections. He is not bad, but I didn't like that format. He gave me an A because I wrote like 6000 words on one. knock out the term paper right away and you will be fine.
Most difficult class. Only graded by three papers: one term paper which you have the whole semester to complete and two written exam papers. 5-6 single spaced pages. Unorganized lec. with difficult word choice. One week to complete each written exam paper. Never responds to emails. And, doesn't tell you what you specifically got on each paper.
RIP Professor Maddock. Clear grader, gave 3 papers as the only assignments for the whole semester. Each paper 6 pages single-spaced with sources cited. Reading 3 books total over the course of the semester. Thanks for being a great teacher, couldn't have asked for a better one. Wishing love to the family, and prayers.
Professor Maddock's History 311 class was really dull. For the entire fall semester it's basically just listening to 2 or so hours worth of lectures and videos each week. No quizzes or assignment other than the midterm and final essays. Lectures hard to follow. The previous review says he passed away, did he? Sending my condolences to his family.
