Strict. very uptight. NO CELL PHONES; he hates cell phone useage
Hates Cell Phones, doesnt like highlighters. is easy going in beginning but assigns a lot of readings. doesnt fully explain things. Doesn't follow the schedule and doesnt keep up with the readings when he assigns them. Grades on participation. RAISE YOUR HAND!
Very strick about phones.....will curse you out. Is very good at explaining the concepts in ways I can understand. And has a GREAT smile.
One of my favorite teachers I've ever had. Does a very good job with clearing up confusions in readings with real life comparisons. Has some funny comments too. Don't use your cell phone, attend class, read the assignments, and you'll do just fine.
Very nice guy, but this class was extremely difficult. Class discussions were interesting and engaging, but you had to read the given material everyday in order to have any idea of what was going on. Have to attend. Quizzes are given at least once a week. Grades rely on only one exam and one term paper. Learned a lot, but was stressed out more.
Good guy. Makes jokes and learns everyone's name in the class. Read like you should be doing anyway, go to class like you should be doing anyway, and don't text like you shouldn't be doing anyway, AND pay attention. You'll be fine if you're being the student you should be being anyway.
Hilarious! Very interested in the topics he is teaching and always willing to answer any questions you have about the material. Discussions in class get very deep and are always interesting. Take notes on what he lectures! Tests are mostly essays. Really into comic books and always sharply dressed. Recommended.
He is an ok teacher (kinda cocky and tries to be cool) but I spent more time on this class then any other. This class requires ALOT of work. Stay away unless you wanna work ridiculously hard.
Rob (yes he lets you call him by his first name!) is a great prof. He is very funny and his classes are always discussions that are interesting and engaging. However you must read the book to able to fully participate, he gets pretty detailed, but you learn so much. He also gives pop quizzes, but they are easy.
I love Rob! Such a great professor and very helpful as well. Just make sure you do your reading and not to text in class and you're golden.
He is not a very good teacher. I was left confused most of the time. STAY AWAY!
Getting ready to think about fall classes and I am skipping Dr. Main. I am a phil major and his classes are pointless. He is a worthless teacher and I cannot stand his attitude. Definitely not recommended. Sadly all of West Chester's philosopher teachers now suck (all of the good ones left) so I am thinking about transferring.
Horrible attitude. Acts like you're an kid he is forced to teach for. Generally arrogant, dismissive, and there is no room for your own outlook. He doesn't want you to think rather tell u what he thinks. If you do anything that seems "too advanced" he literally gets mad! horrible. Don't go to office hours he gets mad. why does he even teach?
Do not recommend taking his class at all! He may be funny and younger but especially for a non-Philosophy major it was way too difficult. Answered any questions we had but he rarely said what we needed to know for the exams. READ THE BOOK. It's very difficult but you'll need the information to do well
Nice guy, study and make sure you read everything he assigns. Do the questions, and be ready for a pop quiz. Ask questions and show up to class. If beginner philosophy major, be prepared to work hard.
If you don't enjoy reading don't even think about taking this class. He is a strict, younger guy. Loves star wars/anything syfy. DON'T text in class or be rude otherwise he will destroy you.
he is really young and kinda cute and funny but i felt like the material was a little too advanced for a 100 level course. must read book and take good notes because he gives pop quizes a lot! watched a couple movies and read a comic book (he's a nerd) only one essay test and one large paper/art project. it was an interesting class, but not easy!
Awesome! Really like this guy. Interesting Class. A lot of work ! A lot of Reading and A lot of writing
Rob is awesome. He's really bright, and always down to explain things if you don't understand. He will make you work for your grade. But then again, this is college. If you don't want to be challenged then take someone else. Favorite professor at WCU.
ROB IS THE MAN. He is incredibly smart, funny, and interesting, with so much to offer his students. I highly recommend him, but only if youre willing to do the work, and pay him the respect/attention he deserves. Dude takes zero crap.
Rob Main is a great teacher. Funny. If you don't have a sense of humor he will come off a bit arrogant but that's on you. I read most of the books not super difficult if you try. He is always willing to help those who ask.
He is such a cutie. He's like a teddy bear. Great and very helpful. There is a lot of readings but he helps all the time. Great discussions! He's pretty funny too. No texting either but other than that he's great. I'd def take him again.
I must preface that I am getting a good grade in this class. His teaching style is lacking, as he overcomplicates even the simplest question leaving many students even more confused than where they were. He is arrogant and made more mistakes in his lessons than I could keep track of. He's the epitome of an apatheic individual.
A LOT of reading assigned (30-75 pages per week) that you NEED to do to understand the class. Discussion-based class, which did make it more fun. Two papers, a midterm, and a few five-point quizzes determine your WHOLE grade, and he took over a month to grade the first paper. He's nice, but the reading/discussion is hard for a gen-ed.
Rob is a really good prof! The only thing you can complain about is a lot of reading, but he lectures on the readings!!! Got an A in his class w/out reading a single page! just listen in class and take notes and its an easy pass. It's philosophy so its obviously thinking critically, if you're incapable of that then dont take a philosophy class!
Dr. Main was a horrible professor. Class was mostly discussion based which made learning very difficult, and he refused to write notes on the board. Whenever students asked questions he never gave a direct answer, which is extremely annoying/confusing. Your whole grade depends on 3 assignments and participation & he is a very harsh grader.
Best prof I've had in college so far. Had him 3 times and he's the reason I'm in my major. If you don't like thinking, do not take his class because he doesn't give away grades, but if you pay attention and engage in the class you can still do well if you don't read every assignment. Open your mind and you'll love him.
Tough grader, but adorable, and so worth it. TAKE!
Dont get him mad or he will make an ass of you. Very hard class, and very hard grader. Wish i never took it
terrrrrrrrrrrible doesnt help you makes you look stupid
Rob is very cool guy. The people commenting that he is mean probably started an argument with him. He's also not hard either. It's a philosophy class so if you're not interested in thinking critically then it probably will be hard. Otherwise, he's a good professor, nice guy, keeps things interesting. Passed with an A, never read anything.
This guy is not a very good teacher at all. He is a very hard grader and he is tough to follow if you dont understand philosophy all that well. Makes it much more confusing than it really needs to be. Not a fan of him what so ever. Comes off nice but really rude at times
By far one of the worst professors I have ever had. He does not explain material well, and does not use a textbook, which becomes a problem. I do not recommend him as a professor.
Colleges today implement pop culture topics into class subjects to reel in students to take those courses. Fr instance this was "philosophy in the simpsons." Unfortunately, this guy teaches some of these courses. It is almost like the class is a teese, he is to harsh of a grader, it is that simple. Little to do with Simpsons.
Rob is such a cool guy, as long as you come to class and do the assignments. DO NOT TEXT IN HIS CLASS. Philosophy is a difficult subject so take a lot of notes when he lectures, the quizzes aren't bad and there is only one exam and one final project. Super fun class, I wish I could take it again with the same professor!
Whatever main (literally) smokes before class isn't what I paid to take. As dry as Philosophy: Critically Thinking is, he makes the concepts as boring as watching paint dry, but worse. Just stands and talks all class without using the board for any notes. I struggled simply because of readings that are impossible to understand even with help.
For a 100 level course, this class is extremely difficult. Main does not write any notes on the board and the material is very dry. If you expect to get a decent grade then you must read the material and ask questions in class. Would NOT recommend Dr. Main
Rob def knows his stuff but it comes across as very confusing most of the time. he mainly stands in front of the class and writes key words on the board. it is very hard to take organized notes in his class. he does notice if you make the effort to answer questions in class. DO NOT TEXT IN CLASS bc he will call you out. he takes attendance!
not as bad as everyone says. don't text in clas
Rob Main is nice sure, but here does make you look stupid if you ask a silly question. Also, his quizzes can go from being easy to hard based upon because you didn't discuss it. He's a tough grader and it's definitely a class you have to keep asking questions to understand what he's talking about. He does not write on the board & its all verbal
You need to show up and participate. You cannot use your phone and you cannot just be quiet and listen. If you don't participate you can only get a B max. Also don't use your cell phone and make sure you stay up on your reading there is a lot. Attendance and participation is part of your grade and he takes attendance every day and a quiz once a wk.
Definitely a tough grader. You take a bunch of quizzes and one exam and have to write 2 papers, but that's not so bad. Unfortunately, I think he expects a little too much out of his students in regards to what each philosopher is "saying." He's really not a bad guy, but I don't know that I'd take the class again.
His class is hard i will not deny that, but he really just wants students to do the work and understand the material. You are graded on attendance and participation but for other grades as long as you do the work you should do fine and if you are struggling he will take time to go over things with you an make sure you understand the assignments.
Really a poor instructor. Answers all questions about material with "The answer could be both yes and no". Requires far too much in a class that is required for a gen ed. No help during office hours.
Main is one professor I did not like and I would not take him again. He gets an attitude if things do not go his way, he does not grade things in a timely matter and does not put grades on D2L
He talks a lot. Gives quizzes on readings, but you can pass them just by paying attention in class for the most part (I did). It's somewhat interesting content. Not many assignments and he's a fair grader. Kind of awkward and weird. If you miss a quiz, you'll get a zero for it. So you have to be in class when he gives them.
You really have to do the readings he assigns, or the class will make ZERO sense. He sorta helps clarify his points, but the class is so confusing. He grades tough, especially for writing assignments. I never went to his office hours, but he was probably helpful if you need it.
He was a great professor. He made the quizzes as objective as possible, which is good since the philosophy concepts weren't the easiest to understand. Doing the readings is important, but some of them are long and none of them were v clear but he explained the concepts pretty well. Barely any lectures, mostly Q&A for the entire class.
Prof Main genuinely cares about how he's delivering the material and how its being received. He was always sincere in his responses and never made anyone look stupid (unless they were texting). All he wants is an honest effort and for the class to be engaged. He helped me see the world in a completely different way. Give him a chance and QUESTION
Great guy, funny, makes lectures interesting, cares more about learning than testing.
Main is a great professor. His intro course is so easy, minimal assignments. Most of the work is reading which can be really confusing but he explains it in the lectures. He does require participation, don't be afraid to ask questions! The key to passing is really understanding the philosophers' point of views. Go to class, take notes, participate!
Rob Main is an outstanding professor, who really cares about philosophy. Classes run more like guided group discussions. If you pay attention and participate occasionally you should have no problem understanding the material. Rob is always willing to answer any question you have and will often have discussions on the same topic multiple times.
This class isn't that bad. Make sure you keep up with the readings (theres alot) and take plenty of notes. He grades on participation so make sure you raise your hand once in a while. I didn't participate much at all and got a B for participation. The content can get very confusing. He's a pretty cool guy and has some funny jokes.
Dr. Main is a great professor who heavily encourages class participation and outside-the-box thinking. The reading material is incredibly dense and isn't for the faint of heart; if you don't like reading, don't take this course. That being said, he's willing to help anyone who needs it and is a fair grader. The tests aren't too bad either.
Rob is a really cool professor. He makes the work interesting with class discussions , and he's always there if you have questions. One of my favorite classes, despite the readings being dense and rather bothering. I'd take him again. participation is key in his class.
Dr. Main is a sub par professor in my opinion. He took forever to grade papers and had the worst attitude when he did not get what he wanted. The readings were very boring and that is coming from someone who loves to read. He is very unorganized and hates any sort of technology in class. I feel like I did not learn anything in the class.
Main is an awesome professor who accurately gets his point across. The material is very interesting, and he makes it fun to learn about. Participation is important to him, so he makes a very comfortable environment for everyone. The final project is nice because you can opt out of the test and do an art project or analyze art.
Rob is awesome. A lot of reading but class is almost like a casual group conversation about the material. Readings are a bit difficult but he's super helpful in making sure everyone understands the material covered. Not too much writing especially for a writing class. Tries to make the discussions interesting; gives good feedback.
Personally do not understand how anyone thought this professor taught well in any way. The entire class is verbal so it's hard to take notes. He slips in nasty comments every once in a while if you don't pay attention to exactly what he is saying. I found him to be rude and an unacceptable grader. Trust me when I say you can find a better professor
DO NOT take this professor!! has the biggest attitude towards anyone who doesn't participate and makes you feel stupid for not understanding a reading, hard class to pass because all he does is let the students talk for him and there are no specific notes to take
It is suppose to be very dicussion based but it is way too much discussion based to the point where the teacher doesn't even talk and it is all the students. So how am I suppose to learn when only the students are talking. The quizzes every Friday don't make sense and bring your grade down because he does not teach the material.
This is a good class if you are interested in linguistics. Professor Main isn't for everyone but if you appreciate quirky people, then you would like him. The readings are not easy but class discussions helps with clarifying the main points.
Good Professor, Just raise your hand every now and then and participate you'll do fine. A lot of reading. He is witty and sarcastic but he really is a nice guy he is just very sarcastic.
This is a very difficult class! Main is very specific when it comes to grading and wants you to think thoroughly. His exams consist of two essays based on the Philosophers we discussed in class and the final exam is a research paper which is very strenuous. I highly suggest to GO TO CLASS and take notes because you will be thankful in the long run.
There is a lot assigned reading in this class. Some of which are very arcane. However, Main explains the reading the passages in a way that can be easily understood. None of his tests are multiple and he grades essays very harshly. I would recommend him if you need to fulfill a philosophy gen end requirement.
Dr. Main rules. Literally just attempt the readings that are assigned and maintain some level of interest in what he's talking about (which is easy) and you'll get along very well. He is more than happy to explain anything that is difficult to understand and genuinely seems to care about his students' feedback.
Dr. Main is a good professor to have for this class. He gets through the material but still keeps the class relaxed. As long as you do the readings and all assignment you will be fine. Tests are short answer and essay, and there is a final essay. There are several quizzes in the beginning of the semester that are easy if you do the readings.
You have to participate to get a good grade at the end of the semester. You have to read 30 pages at a time about philosophy that makes no sense. He grades hard for no reason when it's a gen ed course. Notecards are easy and quizzes are easy if you just pay attention. He grades study guides hard for some reason also.
Rob is an awesome professor. You can tell he cares about his students and philosophy. Some people think the discussion based class is annoying but I found it useful it allows time for students to discuss the material and understand it better with his help. He understands philosophy can be difficult. Overall a really nice and chill dude.
This man can not teach. He stands there and talks never giving us notes or a slideshow. I would never take a class with him again
Professor Main is great! He's down to earth, understanding, chill... He definitely likes philosophy and likes when students participate and share their ideas. You read a lot of deep stuff... It takes a little while to understand the material.
Robert Main is one of the worst professors I have ever taken. I am taking several 200+ level courses within my major and have received better grades for the same amount of effort put into it. His tests are 80% essays so he can grade them however he pleases. DO NOT take Robert Main as a PHI 101 professor, he will tank your GPA.
Professor does not clarify topics well... Very confusing. I think I would have liked the class better if I had a different professor. I would NOT take him again.
I liked him a lot and he was very concerned about making sure his students understood the material. No textbook, just a bunch of PDF readings on D2L that you actually have to read. He just lectures from speaking, no powerpoint. His quizzes weren't bad and not worth a lot but tests were difficult and he doesn't give feedback on essays.
nice guy. very lax and understands that students have other obligations besides his class. readings are long and (sometimes) boring but it's not torture. most assignments are easy, but make sure you study for tests because they are kind of hard. overall, be happy if you're assigned this teacher. it's a solid class.
Lots of readings but it's not impossible. Most classes are just discussion based about what we've read so make sure you participate. Big chunk of exam grades are based off of the essay portions. Very friendly and flexible.
I've had Professor Main for 3 classes now, and he's easily one of my favorite professors. The class is very reading heavy, but often times it's enough to skim the readings because he goes over most of it in class. He's very lax on deadlines and understands that you have other responsibilities. Very kind and understanding guy.
Professor Main is seriously fantastic. There's a lot of dense material to read but if you get a decent participating class it's extremely interesting and worth your time. There are lots of readings you just read for homework and a couple of assign. here and there. Had half online for COVID, worked with everyone and gave lots of slack. Great dude.
A large amount of outside of class readings. From the readings, weekly discussion posts/assignments based on them. 2 papers and a final paper. Class only on weds but not super mandatory. Lecture is mostly student led with him answering questions about the weeks material. Readings are difficult but as long as you put in effort you get an A.
Robert Main is just really cool. He just wants to talk about topics and hear your feedback.
Every week we were given readings and then had to post a discussion on what we read and reply to another classmates response. You weren't able to see anyone else's responses until after you posted. If you do the work you will get an A! If I had any questions, he was very easy to reach over email and very understanding!
he grades hard, gives 0 feedback, hard to reach outside of class time, does not prepare powerpoints or lesson plans for class.
Professor Main is a super nice guy and easy to talk to. He is open to answering any and all questions you have about his assignments or the readings. I liked that this class was an easy A, but he is not a great lecturer and does not give any feedback on the work you do. A lot of the time he would talk for five minutes and say we could leave.
Professor Main is a great, chill guy and Philosophy & Film is a good class. However, there's a lot to read! Honestly this class should have a writing emphasis because there's a lot of that too. He also does not give things due dates on things, which can get overwhelming if you don't plan out time to write. Overall, good professor and course!
I would not have him as a professor again. He grades very hard and gives lots of papers and throws work at you all at once. Never answered any of the emails when asking him questions about the paper. Would not recommend his class to anyone!
He's a really nice guy but he doesn't respond to emails which makes it difficult, especially when the semester is wrapping up and you need your grade
Hes a nice guy but a horrible teacher. He never responds to emails and always shows up late (like 5-10 min late). He also was absent several days. You dont learn anything so if you want an easy class take this one.
Rob is GREAT!! He really cared about students' needs and was totally understanding towards his students. He started every class by asking if we had any questions about anything. If you have to take philosophy I would def recommend Main he's super chill and laidback and there are no real deadlines for work so you can do your work basically whenever.
He is a nice guy but totally neglects the class. His testing format is awful and only tests how students can memorize random texts from the internet, not how well they actually know philosphy. He will randomly decide to cut important things like making a study guide which students rely on to succeed in his exams. Do not take his course.
Don't waste your time taking him even though the online course seems convenient. While he is lenient at times, he is an EXTREMELY hard grader & doesn't provide feedback. Seriously- will take 15 points off your paper & not tell you why. Don't think it will be an easy gen-ed. Plus, LOTS of busy work! Did better in my nursing course- how pathetic.
I would not take this class again. It was not an easy gen-ed for my course load. This class was mostly busy work that I dreaded doing each week. There is a lot of reading and a discussion board to do each week. He doesn't reply to emails, you need to reach out multiple times to get a response. The feedback he provided, if any was not helpful.
The professor not helpful at all. Even for a gen ed course he wont provide feedback on any work and shows up to class late all the time. His tests rely on the student memorizing random texts from online reading that is very difficult to read. If you reach out for help he will not help you! I do not recommend taking this professor!!
Robert Main is the WORST teacher at West Chester University. He does not provide notes on any of the topics he teaches and expects students to understand Philosophers' work on their own with absolutely no explanation. Do not take any class this teacher offers.
Dr. Rob did a great job this semester and led a very engaging PHI101. He's very merciful on late work and extra credit. Highly recommend!
got an A+ in Robert's class, but it was a terrible experience. Teacher is always late and unprepared, has very little knowledge of the subject matter, and almost never answers emails. Don't know how he is still employed.
Dr. Main is a mixed bag. Lectures can be disorganized, but he's an approachable guy. The workload is manageable, though the tests are tough. Using Unstuck ai alongside the textbook helped me prepare better. Overall, it's a solid class if you stay on top of the work.
Robert Main is cool. Some lectures are good, others drag. He's often late and smells like cigs. The work is easy, but he grades hard. He likes giving pop quizzes when barley anyone shows up, do u want us to fail?. Don't expect an A without participation. Bad writers won't do well since tests are essays.
Robert Main is a very nice guy and means well, but his teaching abilities are questionable. He is lazy with assignments and takes forever to grade. He is often late to class or cancels last minute. Some materials on tests are barely gone over in class. He also does not provide structure during lectures which makes class difficult to follow.
Professor Main is such a nice guy and the class wasn't terribly difficult. The 2 exams were hard because it was a written essay. I felt that it was hard to get all my thoughts written down before the 50mins of class were up. He is a little bit of a tough grader but as long as you submit quality work you will be fine.
This class was interesting. I enjoyed the discussions but students never knew what was on the test. He cancels last minute or is late because he's in the garage smoking cigarettes. He also takes everything as a direct offense towards him, such as using the wrong type of paper or checking your phone. It's not a hard class but I don't recommend.
I did not enjoy this class. Going to class was so dreadful as all we do is ask him a bunch of random questions not even related on one specific topic just random questions. You will be called on out of no where even if you are just sitting there listening. Lots of busy work and the exams are difficult. He doesn't tell you when the final is either.
DO NOT take his class. He is terrible at teaching and does not explain things well at all. He talks about his personal life and his divorce instead of teaching, which makes it harder to do well on POP QUIZZES. Yes, he gives random pop quizzes on things we didn't even cover in class. You MUST attend every class to understand the confusing readings.
I think Dr. Main was nice and seemed like a good person, but his method of teaching was very confusing and did not really communicate his expectations for exams and assignments. Attendance and class discussions were mandatory. He expects everyone to participate out loud, or he will give a pop quiz.
Class is extremely hard, and Work workload is very heavy spent most of my time doing homework for this class wouldn't recommend if you're not super into philosophy. Gives no feedback which is kind of disapointing when u put a lot of work into a project, also gives very unclear instructions
