boring, gives very long essay exams, attitude problem
Not quite as bad as you say, but still sort of boring. Knows his stuff. Long essay exams. Not much discussion in class.
He knows his stuff and is clear. Always available to students and answers all questions. Very approachable and friendly.
Boring,attitude problem,just reads his notes,not fluent
Boring,Reads notes. Always cancels classes without prior notice. He should realize that people are commuting from a long distance. What a waste of time.
Some of you are so stupid. If the guy reads his notes its because thats all you are letting him do. If people read the articles and came prepared to discuss and debate them you would enjoy it more... Oh wait... at Ryerson....
Really nice guy. Get involved in classes and you will see rewards!
And all around good guy. Should be more patient with students. attitude problem but that's ok.
he's just one o those people you never notice even if he walks 20 times in front of you... attitude of a short-sighted modern politician that's not supposed to be a politician... he's not good, not bad... he's just there...
Good instructor, has a great attitude. You need to be prepared and ready to contribute intelligently.
One of the best professors in the PA program, I have had him for 4 classes always helpful, Knows his stuff. Highly intellectual, shows respect for his students and is very clear. S.S
Very knowledgeable and entertaining
Understanding and treats students with respect. Good lecture notes and concise. He will give you good marks if you do your work constantly and participate in class
what a pleasant prof. He's not only knowledgeble but very respectful and very reasonable marking style. He teaches really well, and encourages students to participate without looking down at them.
Simply one of the best of his dept. Had I known earlier, I would've taken all my PA courses with him. Very articulate, interesting, and most of all I learned a lot from him.
He teaching style is very clear, very articulate guy, provides extra help if required, very accessible and approachable and most importantly grades you fairly. I was quite happy with his class, simply because he's organized and efficient and it's really hard to see that in other professors those days.
Lectures are very clear and concise. Very easy to follow and take notes.
Just an all out wonderful prof!!
I almost never had a problem following lectures. The textbook was easy to understand, and he helped point me in the right direction with my essay when I went to his office hours. He definitely seems genuine and wants to really help!
Bob's a great guy. He believes in the old lecture till you die approach of teaching, but he attempts to keep you interested. His class will be a 5.0 once his teaching methods meet up with the 21st century.
Bob is a great proff! I’ve had him for 322 & 422 and few other policy courses. There’s a reason why I’ve continued to choose his classes; he knows how to teach! Bob is skilled at communicating and lecturing. He’s well versed and is always there to help during lectures and office hours. As long as you have an interest in the class, choosing Bob will
His is good but font of book made me blind.
Bob's a cool guy. I had no beef with him. Take his class for sure! He really likes Harry Potter! Cite J.K. Rowling and you'll be fine!!!!!! (He likes Hermoine)
Prof Marshall is a Wonderful Professor. Honestly, his lectures are probably the most CLEAR and CONCISE lectures I've ever attended! The content of policy and public administration can be excruciatingly complex, but prof Marshall explains it thoroughly without oversimplifying the material. My one concern, theres no breaks in his lectures!!!
Excellent teacher. Very clear and clever teaching style... A+
Great lectures, clear as a school bell. Fair marking. It is hard to make politics fun, but he does. Everyone participates in debates and has a good educational experience. Extra marks for participation. Hint - he loves motor-cars, really freaky for them.
GREAT PROF! He's a very friendly guy. I didn't buy the book because he does such a good job of summarizing the articles in his lectures. So make sure you attend. The midterm and exam were essay type questions right out of his lectures. Great professor, overall! If you have the chance to take a course with him, go for it!
Bob is a really good professor. He is clear, caring, helpful and friendly. It's hard to find profs like him around nowaday. I just wish he can teach more courses.
Great professor! I just wish could have taught more courses. Will be taking all my electives and professional-related courses with Bob.
Wonderful! Very understanding, fair and friendly. As long as you go to class and take notes, you should be fine. Read lecture notes and whatever notes you take in class. Do not worry about the book; lecture notes should get you a B+!
He is a very nice guy. Very helpful and quite approachable. His lectures are interesting, and like other people have said, if you study the lecture notes you will be fine on the exam!
Although the class is somewhat boring, attendance is MANDATORY to take notes(coz you really don't wanna read that fat textbook)And although u read the text you cant tell what's important w/o going to class. The book assigned for the book review will kill u though, because its not an easy read. Its an okay class all in all, not that awesome.
This prof didnt comment on our essay style midterms because he doesn't get "paid enough". Im pretty sure he didnt even read them since one of my answers was perfect and the other one wrong and I received the same low grade for both. This man is lazy and doesn't seem to care about student success. Instructions for the paper were way too vague. AVOID
u don't really need to buy the text book. if listen to him and take notes that would be enough. i like politics so to me it was not boring. he was nice overall
THIS GUY IS A NICE GUY I WAS FAILING THE COURSE AND HE BUCK UP MY MARK WHEN HE DIDNT HAVE TO..THE ESSAY IS NOT BAD AT ALL I WOULD RECOMMEND PEOPLE TO TAKE HIM
Highly engaged prof that cares about what he is teaching. He is animated which makes the material even more interesting. This course overall is beneficial to anyone who cares about the geo-political world we live in. Robert kept the course moving at a good rate, marked fairly, and never kept us in class for more than 2 hours;) Highly recommended!!!
Enjoyed this prof. Can meander during lecture, making notes sometimes difficult to keep logically ordered. Very clear about expectations. Generous with help either via email or during office hours. Recommend seeing him with essay outline before you write it.
You NEED to attend class to take notes. The midterm was defining and explaining the significance of a few theories/theorists. The casestudy was simple (answer 3 questions). Havn't done the final yet but it'll have definitions and TWO essays. Wonder how that'll work out! Overall, liked this prof and this course was relatively easy.
Not the most interesting class but concepts and assignment requirements are all discussed in detail during lectures.
Nice person.Really hard marker(looks for all theorists to be mentioned in the Case Study assignment as opposed to a detailed explanation of a good chunk of theorist).Doesn't always give good/clear direction for assignments. Midterm/exam=HARD! Must do readings to understand topics he discusses, lecture is not sufficient to prep u for exams/midterm.
Subtle humour that I thought was funny but majority of the crowd was older and most did not laugh. Will help you a lot to understand the lecture material when you do the readings prior to the lecture, always helps u to take better and more comprehensive notes. This course was one of my last priority courses so I only did 25-35% of the readings.
Very helpful and sneaks in a subtle sense of humour when presenting. He is not a "hard" marker per se, he's a fair marker. If it's an average paper, he'll give you an average mark (C or C+), which is what professors are supposed to do.
Must attend class as everything on the midterm and final exam come from his lectures. Can get by with doing minimal readings if you are able to take detailed notes from class. Generally he is friendly and approachable, takes the time to answer questions and allows for class discussions. Has a sense of humour too. Would recommend taking him.
He is the worst prof I have ever had. All he does is talk and talk during lectures and was not willing to do a PPT or any visual that would help students get an idea of what is going on. He constantly jumps from one point to another & if you miss out on a few points, you're lost. He also speaks in a quiet voice which doesn't help. NOT RECOMMENDED!
Fair teacher. Does well enough with at lectures with an incredibly dry topic. Could definitely use better supplements to lectures and online documents though.
He is a nightmare! He talks on and on quoting long awkward sentences. You miss one line, you miss out a lot. You miss a class and you're pretty much screwed on exam. There are no slides to refer to or guide you. Be in class & be 110% alert or you're not getting through. SUCKS. He teaches some required courses so no escaping though. Just beware.
LOVE that he provides all readings for free in PDF. He connects the weekly topics well with his lecture material.
He doesn't keep you for the full three hours which is nice. He tries to get to the point in a concise manner but sometimes goes on tangents. I would rate him much higher if he used powerpoints or visual aids. It is difficult to try to write down his long winded ideas.
Really great professor! Lectures are super interesting. He makes very brief powerpoints, so you have to take really good notes. No textbook! Just a $25 book for the report required. In terms of work: 1 midterm (20%) a book report (40%) and a final exam (40%). Book was 350 pages but was really interesting and relevant to the class!
While the course itself is not particularly hard, this teacher made the course material incredibly dull, even for those interested in the material. The teacher did not seem to care to enrich the students understanding in the material, but simply know the material. Great discussions could have been had in this class, but sadly there were none.
Very knowledgeable prof. If you attend all the lectures you probably won't need the textbook since his lectures are quite detailed (but short at the same time). He ALWAYS ends class early which is great. This class had one midterm, one report, and one final exam. Super straight forward. He even gave us the final exam questions beforehand. Great guy
Great prof. Interesting lectures and very clear on the grading. If you attend the lectures, read the assigned book for the book report and study from the lecture notes and also readings, you should be fine.
Simply put ! He is a gem of Ryerson. He is the most caring professor I have ever encountered in Ryerson.
Simply put ! He is a gem of Ryerson. He is the most caring professor I have ever encountered. He is very clear on what he expect from his students. He is very understandable. Take the note and you will be fine. Midterm and final are super easy ( as long as you have taken a good note). I really enjoyed both POL 507 and POL 607 . Thank you prof !
Disclaimer that the prof is having health/personal issues this semester. Good lecturer but skipped as many as taught; only posted makeup slides for one. Midterm test multiple choice lots of names/dates. no way to see test or get a regrade apparently (source:office hours). mid 25% book review 35% exam 40%. impossible to correct mistakes heavy final.
He is very caring and wants you to pass, but also wants you to learn something. He's extremely passionate about the content and is extremely approachable inside and outside of the classroom. Midterm was multiple choice and the final was 2 out of 4 pre-prepped essays you have to do, but not hard. The course is worth the effort!
Don't have much to say other than he is a good professor. All notes taking in class so attendance is mandatory. He is a very knowledgeable on the content and only issue I have is his lectures can get hard to follow near the tail end of all his explanations. His marking is also fair and comprises of standard midterm, essay and final.
Robert Marshall has pretty interesting lectures and adds cool historical anecdotes that give context to the course content. Overall a nice guy who really wants everyone to do well in his class. The course was a book review essay, a midterm and an essay-exam and that's it. Definitely had a good time in his class.
Amazing prof, make sure you take notes during lectures. All you have to do is review your lecture notes and you are set for the midterm exam. He is extremely passionate about what he teaches. Engages students in a healthy class discussion.
Would highly recommend to anyone who needs to complete an Upper Liberal elective. Class is comprised of a 200-Word Reflection (10%), a screenshot of a picture on the Internet (Seriously) (20%), a 750-Word Essay (30%), and another 750-Word Book Report (40%). Did absolutely no homework for this class and got an A- (Just read the small 150 page book).
This guy is one arrogant dude. The type to not grant extensions cause he believes his little liberal class has superior value. If you're a student with any sizeable workload, do not take his class, you don't want to waste your precious time on his pointless assignments, plus makes his content extremely boring.
I took this course during summer, i really liked it. There was a lot of reading and it was all about Assignement. Good for general knowledge.
I would recommend this class who needs to bump up this GPA and needs an upper liberal credit. Robert was an amazing prof, he gave feedback to assignments pretty quickly and all his assignments were really easy. Although, if you take this course with him, make sure not to leave the book report last minute! I would 100% take a class with him again!
Very good Professor: passionate, kind, genuine, knowledgable, understanding, reasonable, be prepared to put in the work, book review is fun but certainly no walk in the park, and it is a 4th year course, but it's the only interesting course I've taken in 4 years at Ryerson. Lectures are amazing, and straight forward, content is interesting.
It's a really easy course if you know what to do. Just do the readings, write the essays, and read the book for the book report. The prof comes off as very uninterested as he delivers the course asynchronously. No rubrics, brief details about assignments... grades feel very arbitrary. Not at all flexible with due dates or re-grading.
very monotone, no clear instructions, random questions on marked material would avoid this prof
Course is pretty easy if you can read the slides and finish the work on your own. Doesn't have any lectures tho. The prof isn't very helpful and his grading criteria are all over the place. Makes an Upper Liberal course a bit tougher than it needs to be. Try to get another prof if possible.
The assignments aren't directly related to the material covered in class, so I'm not sure what exactly he tries to evaluate on. Pretty simple stuff, but his marking is all over the place, sometimes you get a 75, sometimes you get 100. Readings are repetitive and uninteresting but the prof's slides are ok.
I took this during the fall covid semester and his lectures are just written word docs which is not ideal but he makes up for it with some really interesting insights and knowledge. One of the easier graders Ive had in my undergrad so if your looks for an A he might be your guy
I found his class easy, although it was my first pol class. All you have to do is read the readings, more like skim them. read the book which is a regular high school book. he doesn't hold office hours but responds to email generously. I am taking another class led by him. I recommend taking his classes for an upper liberal.
Prof doesnt teach at all, just posts some PDF lectures. Course is entirely self guided. marking is all over the place - no consistency whatsoever. This man should not be teaching.
This course is interesting, though you'll have to study it independently due to the way the prof teaches it. There are 4 assignments, 2 easy and 2 that require some time... as long as you do the readings you'll be fine. However the grading criteria doesn't make sense.
Not a bad class. I appreciate his thorough and clear instructions for his assignments. He does have a lot of writing assignments especially for PPA 235. Hes easily reachable by email. I didnt mind his posted lecture notes but I know for some that may not be ideal. My advice would be not to leave the book report till the last minute!
Easiest grader at Ryerson, i'd recommend any of his classes for an easy grade. Papers are super short not sure why everyone is complaining, 4-8 pages on average but 14 font
Professor Marshall, I suppose, can come across bit gruff, but he's actually a very empathetic and kind prof. The content is self-led but not overwhelming. You have the entire term to prepare for the final assignment (a book review) and there is no final exam. If you are able to do the work without needing a babysitter, you will do great.
Professor is very kind and caring !
Robert has a great sense of humour and kind demeanor which is much appreciated amidst such dry course material. He is a tough grader on the case study, in which he wants EVERY public admin theory from the course material to be touched upon, which is very difficult to do while adhering to the low word count.
Dr. Marshall was an eccentric professor who was passionate about the subject matter. His lectures were very useful both in learning political systems and ideas as well as helpful in completing the course's evaluated work. Speaking of evaluations- all essays and assignments were fairly graded. Very generous marking for first 3-4 assignments.
Good lecturer who is enthusiastic about the content, gives fair grades on the few assignments.
POL507 is the easiest course ever, even with the book review. There was no midterm/final this go around so lecture content can be entirely ignored. All small assignments are seemingly auto 100% as long as you submit.
Definitely take him if you have the chance! Very straightforward with his assignments, divided into 3 reflections (easy 100% just by handing them in), a book review, and a small assignment at the end of the semester. Wish there were more profs like him!
Taught the class and course concepts very clearly. Showed clear interest and passion for the topics he was teaching. Very easy assessments that were easy to get 100% on (3 Reflections on course lectures, 1 Essay on course textbook). Graded very fairly and gave feedback.
I didn't go to his lecture at all as it ended soo late. Lucked out cause this was such an easy course. Robert marks extremely fairly and provides clear instructions for all the assignments. He's nice in his emails and is always willing to help. Overall easy course to boost your GPA, I highly recommend taking it.
Professor Marshall's class is amazing! He does such a great job of clearly outlining exactly what he expects for assignments and the final paper, which makes everything so much easier to understand. He's also incredibly accessible outside of class, always willing to help with any questions or concerns.
he was probably one of the best profs in the politics department because his assignments and exams were all accommodating and easy. i feel like he genuinely cares for our well-being and doesn't want to burden us + his lectures and content were quite interesting. he is a great guy and i would def recommend his classes!
might sound biased, but enrolling in this class not knowing the whole course is about writing is a pure torture. The content is quite boring and he doesn't go live, but instead uploaded 20+ page text-only slide per lecture for us. He isn't horrible and did give out a good amount of time to complete the work, but too much writing in general.
If you're taking the condensed version of CPOL507 that is 6 weeks instead of 12, beware that it's really really fast pasted and reading intense. The prof sounds strict over announcement but he's just specific about the way he likes things done. I found him to be a pretty generous marker.
Very easy course. All assignments were posted before the first day of class. Free marks if you write with good grammar and follow his simple instructions. There was no lecture, just long notes that were posted in advance which added up to a lot of reading. If you read the course book and lectures this class is an easy mark booster.
Cool class, but heavy on reading. Start reading the book as SOON as possible because you have to write about it. If you're interested in his class, this should be easy for you, but if not, it will be really painful.
Cancels classes every other week then complains when the class doesn't do good on the midterm. Lectures are boring and doesn't give a clear study guide for the midterm.
Nice enough guy and pretty decent lecturer. The material is dry but he does what he can to make his lectures engaging. As another commenter said, it's a bit annoying that he cancels class constantly. He seems to have legitimate reasons, but still. Out of 10 lectures, he's cancelled 4 (so far). The readings are a bit much. Fairly easy marker.
Decent professor. I skipped almost every class and got a good grade. I feel like the material would be boring to a lot of people but I liked it. Easy grader if you follow instructions well. Read the book early! It's quite long. Book/essay was the only hard part of work, every other assignment was very easy, including a short take-home final exam.
