Prof. Martin is in fact and excellent math teacher. If u wanna understand vector calculus then u must take it with him, he made my life easy, as long as u attend his class and do all homework, you will be just fine.
Great teacher. As long as you show up for class and do the homework you will pass.
Ok, I've heard good things about Martion in vector calculus, but I had him for linear algebra, which sucks regardless. He's a boring teacher but a cool guy to talk to. He generally gives really easy tests but no study guides. He's also a fan of random out of the blue questions. He does know his stuff though, which shows.
Take him , he is a great teacher, he drop the lowest grade , his tests are from his notes and homeworks. I liked the way he explained calc 277 ! highly recommended !
WE LIKE SPRINGS. Tests are not too difficult. Don't confuse yourself by studying all the hard things. Test questions gets gradually harder so study the simple ones. Take good notes and review them. Professor may not follow the textbook used time to time, but its practically the same. I would recommend.
taking him this semester; just finish taking the final exam today; don't know what grade I have yet but hoping for a B. I also took him for Calc II and I thought it would be easier to take him again since I know the structure of his class. But, NO. Tests based on hw. I hate how there are lots of hw ques. but only 6-7 ques. on the tests (3). STUDY!!
Good teacher, but the material is super hard. He goes over stuff in class on the board, and does a lot of derivations, some problems. Only get graded on tests: 3 tests (25 pts), 1 final (50pts), drops one test. 5 problems ea, final has 8. They are really hard if you don't study or do homework. If you want an easy A, this isn't the class.
Took Professor Martin for Vector Calc and Linear Algebra. Nice guy and knows his stuff. Tests are straight forward, so best to study the basics and know how to do each section of the homework. Overall though I found his lectures a bit disjunct. Often times I had a hard time following an example or seeing its usefulness. Be prepared to self-teach.
He explains concepts clearly, and gives copious examples. He doesn't want his students to memorize formulas, rather he wants them to understand concepts thoroughly; his tests reflect that line of thinking. Exams are not too hard, just tedious; he even says it himself. Just do the homework, if you feel it's necessary, otherwise, no extra work needed
He can seem to move a little slow at times, but is adept at teaching and made complex matrices seem simple to me, which in turn helped me understand quantum mechanics better.
He is smart and knowledgeable man, but his teaching style can sometimes be confusing, self-teaching will should be a part of your formula. The quizzes were challenging but doable, so is the final exam. He has office hours, which can be very helpful if used in time. There are 3 quizzes (1 is dropped) and the final which counts as 2 grades.
He is a nice person and knows about math, but I didn't like his teaching style. It's only 3 exams; 1 final and 2 tests, so if you do bad on them there would be no way to do good because there's no attendance or hw points. Have to know self-teaching.
Very smart guy, 3 exams and 1 final (1 exam gets dropped) HW is discussed but not collected, engineering oriented, no calculators on tests, final is comprehensive, recommend doing ALL HW until proficient, loves talking about sinusoid&SAI, passionate about teaching, serious students only, if you pass you will be a genius among your peers.
He is by far the best math professor I've taken at NOVA. Amazing teacher. He explains what he is doing, makes sure everyone understands him. However, when a question is being asked, he is not very clear about explaining himself further. He is very helpful when you go to his office hours and he will definitely make sure you understand him!!
His teaching style is very difficult to understand and not clear. He teaches off of the book, we didnt even use the book in class bc he did not teach any from the book. His tests are extremely hard, nothing is in the hw. Cal 3 is not that hard but he makes it harder. I would not recommend him at all. look for someone else
I would not recommend him. His exams are extremely hard, the average of one of our exams is 1525. His exam questions are nothing similar to the text book, way harder than the text book problems. Also, his lecture is a little bit mess up and hard to follow. i hope that i can get the B in his class
his exams are very hard, I would not recommend him.
He makes a really good attempt to make math relatable by using real world examples, although I don't think most people got them. The tests are much easier than the homework, so do the homework and it will be a breeze.
He is pretty intelligent and is willing to help you if you have any question. That being said, I will not recommend taking Calc III with him. All your grade comes from the exams. He will drop one, but the final is 50% of your grade. You will lose percent points for trivial errors. Make enough of them, and you end up with a bad grade.
He's the funniest dude. May not seem like it the first few weeks but he opens up and tells awesome stories. Also explains reasoning behind concepts real well, but tests you mostly on application of said concepts. He gives a review VERY similar to the test the classes before the tests to tell you what to study. Not too hard if you come to class.
Lectures: Briefly reviews book chapter, expands with real world examples, relations to other fields, and multiple proofs. Very helpful ONLY IF you read the chapter. Hilarious stories. Office: Very helpful ONLY IF if you know exactly what you need. Grades: tests(25% each, 3 total, 1 dropped); final(50%, cumulative) partial credit Would reccomend
Provides very good examples of problems that were to be faced. Shows multiple ways to go about a problem.
Worst professor in THE WORLD!!!!! DONT TAKE HIM EVER!!
3 exams @25pts (one is dropped) and final @50pts. No notes/calculator. Exams are 5-7 problems and you can skip one. Copy down in class problems and do homework (not graded). He's not good but not bad. Goes over more material than required. Can be condescending, but I think he means well.
He's a wonderful professor. Very simple class. 3 exams , one will be dropped. Be extra careful for the review class before each exam and you're good to go!
Brilliant teacher. Knows his stuff well enough to come up with complicated proofs off the top of his head, and can relate abstract concepts to real world applications. Grade is made up of four tests and four homework assignments.
I could not stand this professor he was so boring and he would spend 30 minutes on a problem then realize he messed up. I wish I took someone else. If you take him, good luck trying to stay awake.
Honestly, I find him to be very boring. It was hard not to fall asleep or gaze into space during his class. Also, I did not enjoy his way of teaching. He was a bit all over the place. If anything I wish we were given some sort of "study guide" in order to study for each exam. I personally would not take him again.
Mr. Martin is a good guy. Formerly worked for NASA and can tell good stories. Had only 7 questions on each test! And 1 you can OMIT:0. Make sure you do your homework tho.
something about his teaching throws me off and was kind of boring do your homework no late hw accepted would have been okay if it was bit more interesting kind of funny in his own way
He is somewhat boring in class but he does explain things in detail. He sometimes does mess up on problems but it's minor things. He gives you real life examples that are relevant to the materials. About 6 questions on each test and you have to omit one which is cool . MyMathLab was required to do homework and get practice before the tests.
Professor Martin has a way of teaching the material so one can understand it easily. Pay attention in class and do the 6 hours of work outside of class a week and you'll be fine.
Good Math teacher in NOVA. I enjoy working with him, he deserves more than 3.3 rate. Easy A if you pay attention in class, take note. They will be all in your exams. Take him, you will not regret.
Pretty easygoing teacher. He looks just like Bruce Jenner before Caitlyn lol his tests aren't hard they're only 5-7 questions and one you can omit w/no calculator and you can leave after you finish. Hw was on MyMathLab and you can try again as many times as you need to get 100%. Take notes, they will be on all of your exams.
Take him, his tests are like quizzes 5-7 questions one you can omit on every test and drops the lowest grade, very lenient on grading, does mess up on a couple of problems while taking notes but easily fixes his mistakes if you tell him, also hw was on mymathlab and easy to learn using it online to prepare for the tests.
If you take him, I recommend you print out the note guides form MyMathLab and take notes yourself. He doesn't cover all the topics in class; his lectures are usually confusing. He's smart but not the greatest teacher. If you aren't confident that you can learn yourself using MyMathLab, then Prof. Martin isn't for you.
A very intelligent dude, but not an easy class/A. That being said, if you NEED to have a very solid understanding of math, this is your guy. You get 20% just for doing the h/w. Emphasizes theory and application over rote memorization. Very approachable outside of class; he will do whatever he can to help you succeed. Best math prof at Annandale.
Prof Martin isn't the best lecturer and gets frustrated when you don't understand the material. The best thing you can do to pass his class is watch all of the videos and do the practice problems on MyMathLab (a program that is required for the course.) You end up teaching yourself a lot of the material.
He is a decent math professor to take at NOVA. I know not all students are gifted at math and he really tries to help the people who do not understand. His office is always open for people to come and ask questions.
He knows what he's doing, his lectures are actually too broad to the actual content you get to see on the exams. Homework is assigned but not graded. 4 exams, he drops the lowest grade. He's always available, but exams are difficult, there no study guide, just a pre-exam review that covers everything but is not very helpful. You better do the HW.
I really enjoyed Professor Martin. He tells great stories. Lectures are spent solving problems and explaining concepts. He writes down everything from the lecture on paper and makes them available after class for students. 3 midterms and 1 final. Lowest midterm is dropped. Each midterm is 25%, 50% for final. Homework is assigned but not graded.
Professor Martin is a good teacher. He has three tests, and final exam. Students can drop the lowest test. The two tests are 50%, the final exam is 30%, homework is 20%. He wrote down steps about how to solve problems. If you follow him during the class, take notes and do homework, you will get a good score.
Very nice professor. Tests are medium in difficulty, and he is a fair grader. They're mostly from his lectures in class, homework helps but reviewing the notes will help more. He knows what he's doing and presents the concepts well. You won't regret taking him.
Took him for precalc hes a great guy and makes his lectures interesting sometimes. But he goes very fast w/ lectures. His tests are very heavy; only contain 10 questions(10pts per question). His tests are usually focused on almost 5-7 sections which is messed up when u review for 15 sections. Retaking w/ another prof Who gives 15-30 questions
I do not recommend this professor for anyone in calculus 1. The format of the class is really bad. There's homework, which are problems selected out of chapters from the textbook, but nothing is graded. The ONLY graded work in this class are your tests. It is really easy to walk out with a bad grade. Students are not given any incentive.
do not take him for calc 1. Exams have only 6 questions and the exams are the only grades in the course. His lectures are horribly fast and he gets angry when people dont understand. He expects you to come in knowing all the material. Do not take him for your own good.
Your entire grade depends on the tests he gives, and each test only has about 6-8 questions. Does not allow the use of calculators in this class. He is not very clear when speaking and often makes mistakes in his lectures which forces you to backtrack your work and leads to confusion. You pretty much pay to teach yourself.
You can tell when people like to teach and actually care about students. This guy is just that. Don't get me wrong, you will still have to work for a grade. Expect him to do examples in class and tell you exactly what you need to do to pass. If you learn best by doing examples, take him.
Prof. Martin explains the material in great detail and he really wants to make sure that you understand it. He walks you through step by step each concept with simple examples. I learned tremendously a lot in this class and feel absolutely prepared for calc II. I wish every math teacher would be as thorough and caring as he is.
Do all the homework that he assigns. Even homework is not graded, it will help you in the test. If you cannot solve some of HW assignment, use the website Slader to help you out. Also, pay attention and take note during class. His lectures may be broad sometimes, but they are very interesting. If you really want to learn math, take him.
To be honest, this class was a little boring, but he was really caring. He responds to emails fast and gives good advice if you really show him that you care about the class. There were 3 exams(drop lowest), homework (used Pearson) and final. As long as you do your work, you should be able to pass with a good grade.
Professor Martin has many attributes that you want in a professor. He's clear in speech, a lenient grader, and he seems like he genuinely cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. Overall, I would recommend taking his class.
He's not a very good teacher and confusing. One of the worst teachers I've had. Homework was on MyMathLab and was some-what easy. 3 tests plus a final which was based on previous test questions. He seems kinda clueless as to how confused the students are. I would never take him again. Take really good notes and study daily to have a chance to pass
This class was awful, he does not understand how to teach. The lectures are confusing, I have to go to khan academy to understand what is happening. He goes on rants about math concepts, such as electrical engineering and physics, expecting us to understand them already, but it just makes the class more confusing. I would not recommend him.
He is a good person. His lectures were very inspirational as he explored the subject in a very interesting way. But his exams tend to be a really hard and the fact you are not graded with anything except exams is brutal to the grades. But he does do curves which helps A LOT. During COVID-19 crisis, he was very accessible and supportive.
ABSOLUTELY not. I was very good at math before him. Awfully confusing lectures, no resources whatsoever, unclear tests, no one even knew what chapter we were on, if any actually. Jumps from one topic to another, assuming we all know what he is talking about. Plus, he is either very biased or does not know how to grade, and I lean towards the first.
I like his clear, concise manner, and his thought-provoking teaching style. He is very organized and fully prepared for each class. His tests are fair, and he grades promptly. The transition to remote studying (because of COVID-19) was very smooth. Great professor!
No communication on his part. Coding projects that have very little connection to the class. Generally incompetent.
If you choose to learn by recorded lectures instead of showing up to class, be ready for an oral exam on top of the written exam.
All the HW was on MyLab Math, and so were the tests and quizzes. His lectures are fine, he tends to go on long tangents, some related to the topic and others... not so much. I was fine with that, but beware as that can be really distracting. He's very accessible/easy to contact outside of class. Consider someone else if you aren't good at math.
Lots of homework, but tests will make or break your grade. I personally wouldn't take this teacher again, not only are his lectures extremely boring, I feel as if he doesn't teach the way he should according to his grading system. It's as if he just expects you to know everything & the lectures are review. His notes can also be all over the place.
DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR, LITERALLY THE WORST. you will have to teach YOURSELF the material! Lectures were the worst. DO NOT take him.
He gives a ton of homework and it is very hard to pay attention during his lectures. the tests are not multiple choice, you have to show your work or else you get points taken off.
I like his clear lectures, punctuality, and care about his students. Tests are fair. If you follow him, you can get a good grade. I'm surprised at below ratings. Tons of homework is not true. Even though I was taking 20 credits last semetster, I didn't think his homework was a lot. He also let us know good websites and information. Take him!
VERY TEST HEAVY. test 1: 100 test 2: 100 test 3: 100 final: 100 HW: 100 I got 95+ on everything except exam 3 I got a 55 & I'm getting a B. I had zoom classes so attendance is optional per NOVA rules; could be different if classes are in person. He's hard to follow so I taught myself which I don't mind. Strict grading policies. No extra credit.
He uses Cengage for our homework and there are 4 exams all needing to show your work for answers. His lectures were long and complicated went on irrelevant tangents often. No extra credit doesnt drop lowest exam. He seems like a nice dude but his teaching style online was not pleasant.
Easy course if you have a solid math background. Those struggling with math may need to reconsider. Concepts don't always make sense the first time, and he goes on tangents often which I can put up with. Be aware he shows a bit of ego sometimes. 4 tests have 10-12 questions each but are work-heavy. Overall okay prof and material needs some practice
no... just do not take him. first off, incredibly rude in email & he will never admit it but he favors students who have higher grades.. claims he is an engineer but can't even work a simple poll on zoom. he made the final so hard & that the class couldn't finish because apparently we should be getting low scores according to him what!!!!!
first off, incredibly rude in email & he will never admit it but he favors students who have higher grades.. claims he is an engineer but can't even work a simple poll on zoom. he made the final so hard & that the class couldn't finish because apparently we should be getting low scores according to him what!!!!!
Just dont take him. Hes the absolute worst. The class was disorganized & awful, hes a terrible professor & gets off topic so fast. He gave way too much webassign hw & acted as if his class was the only priority & he doesnt even know how to use simple technology when weve been online for so long. Choose another prof & save yourself
He is an okay professor. He isn't very clear sometimes and the resources given didn't really help me understand the material well. Doesn't give any extra credit. I don't know how I got a good grade, but I would not recommend him to anyone who doesn't have a solid math background. Good luck...
Professor Martin is the best math professor I had at NOVA. His exams are from the hw problems and problems we did in class. He truly cares about his students and if you seek help, he will help you, you just need to reach out. I highly recommend taking him. His classes aren't easy A but if you put the effort, it's not impossible to get one.
Great professor really knows the material well. As long as you go to class and take notes you do well on the test. All of his tests are based on problems done in class.
I needed a professor who does not make attendance mandatory because I like teaching myself. Attendance is not mandatory but some problems on exams are from his lectures (if you ask people to share notes tho, you'll be fine). Gave out replica practice tests for the first two exams. Overall, does not make difficult test problems.
Takes attendance everyday, even records being late. Homework is cengage assignments which is not bad beside the price for accessing them. My class had project that requires knowledge of Python, which I did not have. Also the topic jumps back and forth throughout the lecture, which most of time I did not understand much.
Professor always came to class late, never really had a plan for the lesson each day. He just said what he knew about that days topic off the top of his head. He was really bad at explaining concepts to us. I literally learned more PreCalc off youtube than i did in his class. Steer clear of this guy. Terrible at explaining things.
Professor Martin is great as he gives examples of math application. I like how he used python code to demonstrate the lectures. I think attendant and being on time in class are important that helps you follow his lectures and get ready for the exams. There are 3 exams and the lowest can be dropped, and 1 final exam.
Professor Robert Martin is one of the best professors who cares about students learning . He comes prepared everyday and on time .Every student in our class loves him . Of course you have to take notes and ask questions if there exist .you want A it takes some work .It is a higher math class. Mr Martin is the most I recommend without hesitation.
He is a good professor but beware as he can make typos on his handouts to students. Explains the topics very well, but can stutter a bit. He tells funny anecdotes and lighten up the mood. Drops lowest test grade and grades fairly. Overall a solid choice especially at NOVA.
Bad professor not nice at all. He is a tough grade , not good at teaching
He's a really good Calc3 teacher, I'm not sure about the other maths as I havent taken him for those, but for Calc3 he was excellent. He dropped 1 exam. His lectures were very concise and easy to understand. I would recommend watching "MessMath" playlist on YouTube in conjunction to his lectures as the videos posted there are very helpful as well.
He's a really nice guy, reminds you of a friendly suburban dad lol. sometimes dropped interesting lore about himself in the middle of class. If you take this class DO THE HOMEWORK AND STUDY HARD!!! Otherwise you will end up getting a bad grade. Also if you find yourself not doing well, reach out. He's willing to help!! GREAT study guides!
Decent but the professor practically gave up making study guides after the first two exams and did not communicate this to the class. The first two study guides had questions on them that were the exact same as the ones on the exam just different numbers but then for exam 3 he put questions on the test that were not similar to the study guide at al
Professor Martin knows calculus (I have no complaints about that). He taught us some handy tricks to learn concepts (more useful than the textbook in some cases). But please be warned, he isn't there to make friends with students. If you have questions, you HAVE to interrupt him during class or use office hours (He is there as a resource only).
Professor Martin is a great Calc 3 teacher. His lectures are concise and easy to understand. unstuck ai and the 'MessMath' YouTube playlist were super helpful for exam prep along with the practice tests he provided.
Did GREAT in the first half of the semester because you can actually use his study guides to help as they are 1:1 with the test. However, the secone half of the semester the study guides were USELESS. Beware and take notes
Robert Martin's class felt more like Math 167 than 161. He rushes through content nonstop and you are scribbling notes the entire time. He crams in topics that are later retaught in Calc, making it feel pointless. His study guides went from helpful to lazy Quizlet dumps with no bearing on the exams. Avoid him if possible.
He is an okay professor! Definitely better than the old prof I had to retake pre calc. Hw is not a lot. on Mymathlab, 3 exams lowest score dropped 1 final. 15% hw 50% for each exam and 35% for the final. I didn't attend his lectures much since I used the vids on pearson from the Tbook. exams are at most 10 questions. just STUDY and you will pass.
He doesn't let you use electronmics to take notes, paper only. Mentioned that half of his class fails math 267. there are 3 exams worth 50%. the lowerst grade is dropped. Homework's worth 10 percent. Final worth 45% & cumulative. Lectures are okay somedays/note heavy, other days are bad tbh. lot of time goes off topic like really often for hours.
He doesn't allow electronics for notes—paper only. Says half his class fails Math 267. There are 3 exams worth 50% total, and the lowest is dropped. Homework is 10%. The cumulative final is 45%. Lectures vary: sometimes clear but often note-heavy or off-topic for long periods. Please dont take him, he seems to be happy his class is failing.
You must take notes on paper—no electronics. He says many students fail Math 267. There are three exams with the lowest dropped, homework is 10%, and the final is cumulative and worth 45%. Lectures can be uneven; some are clear, while others wander off-topic for long periods. I would not recommend, does not like when u ask questions will get mad.
I took his course because of his moderate ratings and the time that he was teaching at. If you took Precalc in high school, I would not recommend taking his class. There are Math Lab HW, and tests take up a decent potion of the grade. The reason I would not take his class again is because while the lectures were helpful, he did go off topic a lot.
if you know what you are doing, take him; if not, find another teacher. he just does some practice questions, but notes are too much. He does note that we have to know the info before class, but he just really overcomplicates stuff. If you need assistance in math, do NOT take this. test are based off the practice exam. test 40% final 50% and hw 10%
The grading is unfair, exams are 90% while homework barely matters and there's a good chunk. Answer keys lack work for answers or wrong with no explanations. He isn't student-friendly, doesn't teach clearly, and almost all students stopped attending. Says 50% of his class fails and blames us for it but its actually the fact that HE CANNOT TEACH!!!
Prof Martin has so much aura in a weird way, throughout his lectures he tells us stories and it seems like hes done literally everything and teaches calc 3 for fun.the class graded with only 3 things a final 40%, 3 tests (drop lowest score) 50%, and the HW 10%. His lectures are clear and HW is good indicator of the test. doesnt communicate well tho
I'm just speechless. The final exam worth(40%) of our grade had 4-5 questions from actual exams. The remaining I have never seen them in class before. I attended every class. No cw just hw(10%) and exam(90)!? ur grade is reflected on ur exams not the class at all. Please don't ever take this class. Never have been so stressed prob bombed the exam.
I never hated a class before as much as this class and it says a lot because I have to put it up here. I would not recommend taking his class. Poor communication with students. Terrible at teaching. Final is 40% and 2 Exams are worth 50%. Any other math professor is better than him. I never cried as much because of a professor.
Goes out of his way to teach you about stuff that's not required by you. Talks about nonsense instead of the class. Not hands-on the material. Makes you feel bad for asking a question
Generally good prof. Lets students drop 1 test out of the three given over the semester. Final is worth 40%. Tests frequently cover questions done in class or have questions from sample tests in Canvas. Explained topics in detail.
Professor Martin is an experienced lecturer. He explores topics in great detail. He doesn't take attendance, so you don't have to go to the lectures. The lecture are very helpful for the test. There are similar concepts between the lectures and the exam, so it is a good idea to go the lecture.
