Terrible. He makes the simplest material seem difficult. No verbal warning of due dates for exams or assignments. Syllabus does not follow his schedule of anything. Recommend Duncan.
Mccarthy was a nice guy and had a sense of humor although he doesn't look like he would. Classwork didn't really relate to projects/homework but some of the stuff you can teach yourself. He makes himself available for outside questions and help if a student needs it.
Nice guy and willing to meet outside of class to help you. It seemed lectures really didn't prepare us for projects.
While i found mr. mccarthy to be a likeable guy, I thought his class was the biggest joke. His lectures were so boring I could barely stay awake, but if you missed you had no idea when things were due because he didnt follow the syllabus at all. While he graded extremely hard on the assignments, if you got a 65 he gave you a C. Overall though, w
He is nice, but is so unclear about assignment due dates, its ridiculous. Also, he grades extremely tough and doesn't really explain the material very well.
McCarthy, is nice guy but i would never recommend anybody to take his class. He is never cleared about the assignments due date. His examms are hard. Assignments are easy once you understand what it is. Tough on grading. He makes everything look tough which in reality is nothing. He thinks he knows alot.
He demonstrates a 30 sec function or tool and then says its on the test. He reads the power points and provides no recap. The assignments can be done but his instructions are not clear. I would not recommend his class.
Boring Teaching method with no demonstrations for homework. He seems to do the the bare basics to get by with teaching the class. I think he needs to move on with his life and not teach anymore. He grades very hard and very slow. I dont know the grades on 25% of my work after doing it almost 2 months ago. Do not take his class.
If someone recommends you take this guy please don't. Not only does he teach exclusively from book Provided powerpoints his grading speed is extremely slow.Through the first 3 months we submitted 4 projects and only 1 was graded. So its really tough around the Withdrawal deadline.
He is an extremely slow at grading assignments. He has computer lab times to go get help, eventhough most of the time he isn't helpful. He doesn't provide examples of any case projects with excel. I would never suggest him as a teacher especially because he isn't giving a review sheet for the final, which is ten chapters in javascript.
Terrible, just awful. Do not take his class. Takes forever to grade. Doesn't follow syllabus, no warnings of due dates or tests. I actually walked into the midterm thinking it was a week later and hadn't studied at all. Worst professor I have ever had.
I have never had a worse professor. Extremely slow in returning grades - grading is completely unfair and unpredictable. Excel projects have nothing to do w/ anything you learn in class and the 2nd one was due before we ever got the grade back on the 1st to find out if you were on the right track of what he wanted or not. 1st test avg. was an F.
He's older so he talks kind of slow. He just did the skills from the book in class. You do like 5 exams and 5 assignments that are easy but long. There's attendance quizzes so you need to go to class but it can get very boring. The material is pretty simple though so if you study the book and do the assignments you should be fine.
He is by far the worst teacher I have had at umsl. He does not explain things well. He doesn't reply to emails. His grading is completely unfair. The list goes on. The bottom line is he is absolutely terrible. I would not recommend him to anyone.
The Excell portion of the class was easy, so was the Javascript website. However, as far as setting you up for the midterm or final, he does not help you at all. My midterm "review guide was 3 short sentences. The final review was better, but what he told us to study for the multiple choice part had very little to do with what he tested on.
Worst teacher ever!!! Never take his class!!! Have no clues what he was talking about even though i attended every classes.. He just read the powerpoint and when we ask the question he seems like he dont want to answer and did not clarify out question
Worst Prof. I have ever had. Got an A-. Bob shouldn't be a teacher. You ask him a question and he tells you he "can't answer that" or "you'll have to decide". It's because his grading is inconsistent. Little guidance on Midterms and Finals. Assignments have a good template but his erratic preferences make you want to pull your hair out.
Attend Class(up to 7.5% EC for attendance Quizzes), READ/LISTEN then Ask Questions(McCarthy will answer all questions thoroughly/Stays after class to help students). Covers only Excel/Java. I believe the people who did poorly in my class were most likely not prepared for the critical thinking required for college. Does not spoon feed students.
Do not take this class with him. The midterm average was a 40% and he spent the whole next class lecturing us about how we don't know how to listen. The excel assignments take FOREVER and he is nit-picky about grading but doesn't give you guidelines. You get points off for everything. I went to every class and read before and still didn't pass.
McCarthy has everything it takes to be a terrible teacher. Ask him a question and he'll just say "You tell me" or "find out yourself". It's because he doesn't explain the material well, he's very unhelpful, topics on exams are irrelevant to what he teaches, and blames you for doing poorly when his erratic teaching styles are what really causes it.
He is a nice guy but he is the worst teacher. He is not clear on the what he expects with each project that is due. He does not review or tell you what to study for exams. My class average for the midterm was a 38%. Awful teacher. Take anyone but him.
Terrible teacher. Avoid him at all costs.
Class is largely Excel projects; some reading on INFSYS in Business. McCarthy is a horrible teacher of the material. He reads the PP presentations word-for-word and gives very little guidance on projects (though he does give a PDF of what the sheets should look like). Attend class; 10% extra credit through quizzes.
McCarthy doesn't understand the material he's teaching at all. Just reads powerpoints word for word during lectures and if you ask him a question about something, he'll dodge it, refuse to answer, and not clarify it out for you with responses like, "Can't answer that", "You tell me", "Find out yourself", or "You'll have to decide".
He is very strict on grading the case studies, but the outlines for the assignments are so incredibly POOR and minimal it is hard to tell exactly how to answer the questions for a full grade
Our class's midterm average was an F, as was the class's before us, and the class's before them. McCarthy is an awful teacher always puts the blame on his class for this claiming they don't know how to listen. That's not a reasonable excuse if it's happened countless times. In reality, he doesn't know how to teach which is the logical explanation.
Worst...ever! Learned nothing. His directions for assignments were never clear so you just make it up and pray for the best.
Many people end up taking this class twice. The pre-req does not prepare you for this class at all, and this teacher does not help you at all!! He offers tutoring hours for a student tutor, but they are never available. You have 7 cases, and the book doesn't help you, and neither will the teacher. If you do ask for help, he has no idea what to do.
If you ask this teacher a question he'll respond by choosing one of four answers which are: (A) Can't answer that, (B) You'll have to decide, (C) You tell me, or (D) Find out yourself. I was amazed by his helpfulness.
Very hard professor and he does not help at all.The cases taught me a lot but I taught myself the information. Midterm and final were both HARD. The avg. was an F. Received an A- in the class but worked non stop to get it (also did the EC quizzes before class). Take someone else if you can.
I was warned not to take his class but my schedule gave me no other choice. Never have I had a class that was a massive mess. Bob doesn't understand the material he's teaching, grading is unfair, and doesn't follow syllabus. Several people and I actually walked into the midterm thinking it was a week later and hadn't studied. The average was an F.
This class will suck the happiness right out of you. I have never hated excel so much in my life until finishing this course; man I'm exhausted. The instructor can be hard to talk to because he tends to come of as arrogant and impatient. If you do the projects, e.c., and keep your mouth shut, you'll do fine.
If someone in the business advising office tells you to take this guy, DON'T. He has a lot of openings in his class for a reason. It's because UMSL students warn people not to take him since he is a horrible teacher. He's unhelpful, rude, arrogant, inconsistent and slow with grading, midterm avgs are always an F, and more to list. Do not take him.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had at UMSL. He doesn't explain things well, he never follows the syllabus, he's very unhelpful, his grading is inconsistent and unfair, he doesn't help prepare you for exams, test averages are always an F, & the list goes on. The bottom line is that he's ridiculously awful. I would never recommend him to anyone.
While I found Bob to be a nice guy, I thought as a teacher he was a joke. He never gave clear instructions for any projects so it was hard to know what he wanted. When we ask him what he wants, he snaps at you. When we ask him how to do something, he says "Can't answer that". Though he grades tough, if you get a D he gives you a C. But overall wth.
This guy needs a serious chill pill. He totally ego trips on his 'power' over college students and has no respect for anyone and no willingness to take the time to help anybody with anything. It's so RIDICKEROUS.
Didn't learn a thing from his class. Bob shouldn't be a teacher. Every time you ask him a question, he responds with, "Can't answer that" or "You'll have to decide" because his teaching methods are a mess. He claims he does a good job teaching but no one knows what he is talking about. His syllabus doesn't follow his schedule for anything.
Worst teacher in the whole world!!! Never take him no matter what you do!!! He never helped me or anyone with answering our questions and he just read book provided powerpoints word for word during lectures to get by with teaching a subject he doesn't understand at all. It's amazing UMSL is still keeping him around despite his awfulness.
UMSL keeps Bob around despite that he shouldn't be a teacher at all because he won't get a job teaching anywhere else. He grades very slow on everything because he is picky about requirements which he never explains. Midterm avg was an F because he didn't help prepare the class for it. He is absolutely awful and is too ignorant to realize it.
My work Schedule required me to take his course. The only thing i got out of his class, was being stressed which resulted to me getting sick. I would drive to Campus on Saturday (the only time I could meet with the tutor) and the tutor would NOT SHOW UP. If you are already proficient in Excel, then this class is for you If not. Well its up to you!
Teachers are people who strive to help students succeed. Not sit around grumbling and refusing to answer questions.
Average Midterm grade was an F only 2 people passed it. Sad since this is a required core class and no grade forgiveness when you have to take it again. Which I did with another teacher and made an A- instead of the F. Do yourself a favor avoid this teacher if you can. Can't believe he still teaches when all he does is fail his students. GPA Killer
Absolute putrid human being. This man taught me nothing. You're better off taking this class with someone who knows what they are actually doing unlike this person, folks.
I do not understand why people are giving him bad ratings. We were graded out of 1000 points when the total possible points was 1100, missing 200 points would still give one an A-. Maybe people are just lazy. Lectures can be boring. Projects are not easy but they are pretty well explained in the book. He also has in-class quizzes for free points.
He takes about 3 months to grade just one assignment, he gives tutoring hours for tutors that are never available, he doesn't understand the material he's teaching, students would usually correct him if he gave help but he hardly ever gives help since he does little to nothing to help at all. He's a terrible teacher and is too stupid to realize it.
Do not take Information Systems with McCarthy. Our midterm average was a 35% because he was unclear about the test date, gave no help preparing us for it, didn't follow the syllabus, and took no fault for it at all. He just spent the whole next class yelling at us for "not knowing how to listen". This has happened with his past classes too. Avoid.
Do not give him a good rating which he doesn't deserve at all until you've read all the reviews about him on here. All of these reviews on here are true.
This has to be the worst professor to ever teach at a university. All of his classes have complained about his unstructured class and disrespect towards students, even signing petitions against him. I blame UMSL for letting him stay and remain a teacher. I feel cheated and wronged. It shouldn't have been allowed to happen to me or anyone.
Terrible teacher and is too stupid to realize it.
Worst teacher I've ever had. He doesn't do anything to help you at all. He makes everything look hard which is nothing in reality but having his grading be inconsistent up to the point where makes himself look more like an idiot than a teacher. The first test average was an F. He's only employed by UMSL because he won't get a job anywhere else.
His lectures are pointless besides quiz days and review for mid-term and final. The only way I was able to complete the case's was through the tutor and other students. He was rude the one time I asked for help, so I didn't asked again. Avoid him if you can but if you end up taking the course, work ahead the cases are very time consuming.
Taking him is purely for the entertainment that he is because he was a fail in every way as a teacher. He's rude to students, he doesn't know what he's talking about, he has no intelligence, and is hardly helpful for anything. But omg is he unintentionally hilarious or what? He's a terrible teacher and he's too stupid to realize it.
This guy is really, really bad. His lectures consist of a bunch of useless information that have nothing to do with the assignments you have to work on. He won't help you whatsoever because he doesn't understand the material he was hired to teach. And getting in a group to work on the assignments and to work ahead is absolutely necessary to pass.
I didn't learn anything from his lecture. He doesn't help you that much. I had to go to the tutor every time I have homework or watch youtube videos to get answers. I would never take his classes again. Also, he takes quizzes instead of checking attendance every class.
He's very helpful. You can actually get an A if you just put on effort, even just a bit. It was a really easy class.
Very helpful and patient.
The very exact opposite of helpful and patient.
He expects a lot out of you for a 2800 class. Barely answers emails and is super strict about all assignments. Doesn't explain assignments and looks at you like you're stupid if you ask a question. Wish he wasn't the only teacher during the semester so I could take with an easier teacher. Sad thing is this is a mandatory class to graduate now.
I took his class and it is unbelievable that this man still has a job. He uses all of his old lectures and old syllabuses, etc. The due dates on everything are all wrong and you are just supposed to figure it out. All responses to emails are generic and not helpful. By far the worst teacher you could ever possibly have.
he is okay its just that you have like 5 projects and like 3-4 tests and beginning of class quizzes you just have to be willing to put a lot of time otherwise your not gonna do good
I signed up for this class after reading all of the negative reviews, I thought everyone was just being petty. I was wrong and ended up dropping. All of the reviews are true. WORST TEACHER EVER.
This teacher is a total Doo-Doo head. Our entire class failed the midterm because he was never clear about the exam date. His syllabus didn't follow his schedule for anything and it's ridiculous he hasn't been reprimanded by the university for this. This kind of thing is inexcusable of him to be doing. I don't understand why UMSL keeps him around.
I got an A in this class, the material itself is pretty easy but the professor himself is a different story. Impatient, rude, and just plain mean to students who ask questions about his terrible lectures. Has high standards for projects but doesn't tell you what they are until after due date. Avoid Mr. McCarthy at all costs.
Class itself is not that bad, but be prepared to teach yourself. He assumes that all students are fresh out of 1800 which must be his justification for not thoroughly explaining material. Lectures are not very useful, but you can use the class time to figure out the work on your own. On the plus side, he does curve and sometimes gives key answers.
This class was an easy A for me so I don't understand why other people are whining about it. There was a lot of work but it was all laid out on the textbook. The book specifies what to do, even what and where to click next, so it was very understandable. The lectures are okay. He'd help you if you had questions with the homework. Good professor.
Worst Professor at UMSL. Terrible at grading, makes you go to his office hours to argue why you got the question correct.
He is tenured, so he is not too concerned on his pass/fail/drop rate. He has tutors grade everything done in class, so don't go to him for grade feedback because he won't know. I would encourage you to have some JS knowledge for the end of semester project. AND DO NOT PROCRASTINATE PROJECTS OR YOU ARE SCREWED. Each project takes 4 hours.
By far one of the worst professors I have had in my college career. The class material is not that difficult and most of it you can teach yourself except maybe the last project. However, he is terrible as a professor. He is almost impossible to get in touch with outside of class. If you can take with someone else or online.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!! NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS!!! Couldn't understand anything he talked about in his lectures even though I attended all classes. He just read powerpoints that were irrelevant to our Excel projects. And when he's asked a question, he acts rude and impatient to anyone that asks him one and he makes no effort to clarify it whatsoever.
Yes, it seems like there are days where there is no time for him to help students. But he designates days called work days where he goes around helping people.
This is the worst professor I've ever had in my entire college career. He doesn't explain anything related to the assignments given, let alone explain what each assignment is to consist of. Asked a question after class and got: "This isn't a how-to. Figure it out." Sorry, I forgot that you don't go to college to learn "how to" do anything.
What a freaking Bimbo of a professor. He is the worst professor I have ever had. AVOID HIM LIKE THE BLACK PLAGUE. He makes the IS department look bad. Pros: -NONE Cons: 1. Doesn't care 2. Doesn't explain crap 3. Has a strict cell phone policy but his course material does not teach you SQUAT 4. PowerPoints do not correlate with assignments.
BAMBOOZLED AGAIN!!! I signed up for this class with a different professor and instead I got Mccarthy. For a teacher he doesn't teach. Just tells you to read then tests you. Gives you assignments then tells you when to turn it in. That's all. Non stop excel projects, turn one in, get another due in a couple weeks! Engineer by trade, teaching infosys
If you don't understand computers you likely should not be an Info Systems major. His class is easy if you are competent with excel and know technical jargon. However, if you can't pass this class then you will likely not be able to pass the programming classes, so make sure you're in the right major. Overall, a great professor and very lenient.
He doesnt teach anything. He just holds court in class and intermixed random stuff with legit course material. The rules for the projects are given verbally in pieces over multiple days with no clear written direction or guidelines.
everything is in the book i dont know why people are complaining nice guy
There is no logical or legitimate reason for this guy to have the midterm average be below 50% every semester in his classes and blame it on the students by yelling at them, talking down, calling them names, he breaks every moral rule there is to follow when you are a teacher, especially at a university.
He's an absolutely terrible professor. He is terrible at grading. He doesn't teach, and he makes an easy course unnecessarily hard. It's so frustrating. I don't understand why they still let him teach.
makes the class unbelievably harder than it should be. Does poor job of explaining. My friend took online by different professor and received an A easily. did not do even half of the work we did. Two of my friends and I had to drop after receiving very low F on exam before midterm and we are A students!!
I'd like to see one person who gave this guy a good review explain why everybody in all of his classes every semester gets a low F on his exams. One person. Because his grading is unfair, unrealistic, and unbelievable. And to make matters worse, he doesn't grade anything he assigns. He has others do it for him. Has no understanding of his subject.
He forgets about when we have a quiz, his exams are easy the multiple choice part is super easy. All the questions on the exam come from the review that's posted. The only annoying thing is when it comes to JavaScript he doesn't give you any instructions on it. The quizzes are just for extra credit, easy A. He's not bad as the comments suggest.
I have a learning disability and I greatly appreciate direct instructions on how to do the homework. I have an incredibly difficult time trying to figure it out for myself. Plot twist: He does not give out direct instructions. Great sense of humor, though. Doesn't really help the fact that he can't teach.
Horrible, just terrible, do not take him for this class. He takes months just to grade one assignment, he doesn't follow his own syllabus, and he doesn't have a clear schedule for assignment due dates or exams. I actually walked into the midterm thinking it was a week later because of that and hadn't studied at all. Worst teacher I've ever had.
