He is an okay professor. Test are easy, but some of them material is abstract, Dr. McConnell is awkward but funny nonetheless. The material is interesting. Test are easy, and consist of multiple choice and an essay question.
Super hard class. You have a lot of books to read and a lot of notes and he doesnt help you out with what is going to be on the test.
Dr. McConnell is a great professor who genuinely loves what he teaches. He attempts to make every lesson as understandable as possible, and he involves students in the class to try to keep everyone's attention. You can still pass without doing the mandatory readings, although it makes it a little easier. Come to class, pay attention, and pass.
Dr. McConnell is a great professor. He cares about what he teaches, he explains everything really well, and he's pretty theatrical with his lectures. The class itself is pretty easy, the only way you'd fail is if you either never came to class or just didn't pay attention.
I would very much recommend taking his class. He makes the lectures interesting, and he truly loves what he teaches. The only grades in the class come from 4-5 tests, but if you listen to his lectures, they shouldn't be too bad. I would take his class again if I could!
Take him. Hes a good professor. The material is kinda weird because its abstract, but the tests are not that hard. He posts all of the power point slides on canvas and they are rarely more than 10 slides per topic. Doesnt take a lot of studying like my other classes. Would take again.
Intersting lectures. He is very goofy so it makes it very easy to pay attention in class. GO TO CLASS AND YOU WILL DO FINE, but even if you don't he always posts the slides on canvas so you can catch up on there. He has 4 exams (25 multiple choice and 1 free response) and then the final. Would definitely recommend him.
Okay, so you don't have to attend his class, but you should if you want to do well because his lectures give vital info not on the powerpoint. Also, I didn't purchase the books but he recommends that you do, and the tests are not specifically based on these. He haas 5 tests and final that isn't cumulative. He makes lectures funny and enjoyable.
Attendance is not mandatory but is highly recommended, though he does post the PowerPoint of each lecture online the day it is given. Exams are not cumulative. The reading is recommended but the exams are lecture based so youll do fine if you choose not to keep up with the readings.
Dr. McConnell is a great guy. He makes lectures interesting even if the material is not. Even though attendance isnt required, still go. He mentions a lot of important material in class that isnt on the powerpoints. I highly recommend taking him.
His Sociology class is lecture based with power points that he posts online. He is quirky, but is a good guy and very approachable. The tests require you to study, but if you go to class most of the time you will be fine and should get an A if effort is applied. I would take his class again.
Well, I liked the professor but, he was not exactly the greatest teacher. He didn't give us material to review for the test until the third test. The only grades in the class are the tests and if you don't do well on them you won't pass. Attendance isn't mandatory but you can't do well unless you go.
Probably the biggest goofball you will ever meet, but in the best way possible. He makes boring material interesting. You do have to study for tests, but they're not too tough. attendance isn't required, but it helps A LOT!! Would definitely recommend RDM
Dr. McConnell is probably the kindest, most entertaining professor you'll have. His class is easy to pass, with lectures and powerpoints that follow the test material exactly. If you have a pulse and write down the highlights, you should be fine. You don't have to struggle to pay attention because McConnell is incredibly funny and entertaining.
Dr. Mcconnell is an odd duck. He is funny and approachable, and his class is not super hard. If you pay attention you will pass easily. I bought the textbooks but only used them once, and would have been fine without them. Overall an easy, interesting class.
Just go to class and take the PowerPoints seriously because theyre basically the test. He also says things in the lectures that arent in the PowerPoint uploads but show up on the test so make sure you go to class most of the time! Grades are only test based so you really have to study. But as long as you study tests feel easy.
McConnell was very entertaining, but it took a while to get used to him. His powerpoint are bare, but he posts them online, but still come to class to get bulk of test information. The tests are honestly like vocab tests and straightforward with one brief essay question. He is very interesting and sometimes provides a study guide for the tests.
Dr. McConnell is a character and the nicest professor out there. However his class is not an easy A. He wants his students to succeed but he will not give out answers. Attendance is not mandatory, however, everything he lectures about will be on the test. He provides Study Masters before each exam that really help too. Exams are the only grades.
only grades are the 5 tests throughout the year. attendance isn't mandatory but that's where you'll get the answers for the study guides - which is exactly what will be on the test. mcconnell is absolutely hilarious and his lectures are not easy to tone out because of it.
Lectures are online but he elaborates In class and that information is on exams. Usually provides study guides for exams. Papers are involved, it takes a lot of effort and deep thinking to get an A. A really caring guy with a great sense of humor. Very willing to listen to students opinions.
Textbook isn't necessary. His tests follow suit of his provided study masters, and if you put decent effort into those, your grade should reflect that! Didn't buy the textbook and received a 96 in the class. He is an interesting guy and if you pay attention, he is absolutely hysterical. Highly recommend.
If you can get through syllabus day with McConnell you will love him. His class is just lectures and plain powerpoints but he makes everything interesting. There's 5 tests and nothing else so make sure to do the study masters because they are word for word the questions from the test. Don't buy the books.
love this guy. first week of classes I dreaded going to class, but once you get to know him and his teaching style he's hilarious and passionate about what he teaches! also gives amazing study guides for all his tests
He is very interesting and teaches in a different way. Takes time getting used to and be ready to write fast. Some even recorded his lecture because hes so fast and elaborate.
McConnell is a funny and interesting guy. He posts outline powerpoints, but to fully understand them you need to go to class. He also gives study masters before every test which are exactly like the test and if you know them you will get an A. You do not need to read the books. Would for sure take his class again.
Go to class, that's all there is to it. He's an interesting and funny lecturer so going to class is never a struggle. Posts powerpoints to Canvas but they're pretty bare so need to go to class to fully understand the material. Also gives out study masters (guides) before tests which are almost word for word every question from the test.
Prof. McConnell is quirky and hilarious. He's a great lecturer and knows how to explain complicated topics clearly. Don't miss this class, his lectures are memorable which will help you on the tests. Do his study masters and you will pass the tests. You can tell he really wants everyone to do well but he won't just hand you the grade.
Amazing instructure. Very engaging
Great choice. If you are debating if you should take him or not, the answer is simple. TAKE HIM. Show up, take decent notes and pay attention. He gives great study masters that are very similar to the test. I only study the study masters and have a 97 in there right now. The tests have an essay portion of 1 question, but they are easy.
At first, I dreaded his class because it was so early and I didn't know anything about sociology. But Prof McConnell made me excited to come to class. He has a hilariously dry sense of humor and took an otherwise boring topic and made it interesting. Five tests, final isn't cumulative. Study masters basically give you the test questions.
He's a great professor. Expectations are all laid out very clearly and he makes the information readily available. His lectures were really funny and I enjoyed attending class. He doesn't track attendance but if you miss the lectures you're not going to have the info you need.
Get past syllabus week and you'll be fine in this class. Dr. McConnell seems very strict and mean but he lightens up later on and has a very sarcastic, dry sense of humor. The only grades in his class are the tests but his study guides are very similar to the tests. No need to read outside of class, just take good lecture notes.
Class isn't mandatory, he just reads off the power points he posts online. The study masters he posts are exactly the exam. Easy class that doesn't require any work until a few days before the exam.
Syllabus day isnt difficult, its just painful to sit through. Lectures gets more enjoyable/tolerable as the semester goes on. His anecdotal stories are relevant and interesting, but attendance is important because all the necessary notes arent on the powerpoint. Also, assigned readings are important if youre taking the class online.
Dr. McConnell's class was pretty interesting mostly. He is really funny and his tests are pretty easy- he gives good "study masters." I've enjoyed his class.
mr mcconnell was one of my favorite teachers this semester. at first he seems a little iffy but once you get to know him he's a good guy, and very funny. we had five tests before moving to online but theyre easy. he posts study guides, he calls them study masters, that are exactly like the test. his slides are bare though so you have to go to class
Say what you want about him being "easy" or whatever, but its so much more than that. It seems easy because he teaches that well. He is interesting, hilarious, and well worth the 8 am. Even online, he was a joy to take. And I made a pretty decent grade. But most importantly, I actually learned the material to the point I could apply it. Take him.
Prof. McConnell was great! I had him online but whenever he held optionally class I made sure to go. He is a slow talker so I always had to speed up the lecture but he was a great professor. The content was always interesting and made the lectures easy to pay attention to. Weekly quizzes that were easy and you got 2 tries. Easy tests as well.
Professor McConnell is truly incredible. He is really passionate about what he teaches and wants his students to come to him with any questions. Online, all the lectures were on Panopto so you could do everything at your own pace. He had weekly quizzes, but if you watch the lectures you should be fine. Overall, he really cares about his students!
Our class was online because of remote learning with occasional optional in person lectures. I loved McConnell's lectures he kept them very interesting and broke down the material well. He was hilarious and posted the weekly lectures on Panopto. 2 weekly quizzes of the lectures and 3 exams. Take good notes and you'll do fine! Definitely recommend!
all the homies love McConnell. Truly a man who knows what he's talking about. If you're interested in Sociology, you can learn a lot and enjoy this class. If not, you can easily pass the class. Join all the GroupMes and this will be a very easy A.
I think Dr. McConnell did amazing with the adjustment of online schooling. He was very understanding of technical difficulties and kind in general. His lectures were interesting and he just gives off good vibes. The tests/quizzes are straight from his lectures, so watch those and you're golden! Wish I could have him again.
you are lucky if you get him for sociology! his lectures are funny and interesting and the tests and quizzes are pretty straightforward. everybody loves him
He's incredibly boring but tests are managible. He tends to go off on tangents and can't speak coherently to save his life. Get ready to listen to 25 min worth of info for a solid 50 min of pausing and breathing. Likes to blast music before class. Tests are easy you just have 2 weekly quizzes and essay portions on the test. Not terrible
His tests are so easy. 2 quizzes per week. No extra credit/curve. His powerpoints are bare so you need to take notes on basically everything he says. He tends to drag his lectures out but he's funny and makes the class less boring. Quizlet is your best friend in this class.
He is the funniest professor I've had. Great class for an elective or an easy/fun class to take.
McConnell's class was very interesting. I thought that all of his jokes were very funny and he made the 8 am class worth it. The tests were kind of difficult for me, so make sure to study throughout the semester to retain and understand concepts. Definitely recommend taking him!
Dr. McConnell is an angel. This class actually taught me SO much, and helped shape my views of the world. Many say you have to go to class to pass---a LIE! I went 3 times and have an A. His tests cover the lectures though. Study what he says and UNDERSTAND it. Also, study quizlets from previous classes. Overall, very doable and fun. Good luck!!
You can tell that Professor McConnell has a passion for the stuff that he teaches. Tests include an essay portion and there is not a clear guideline for what that essay should look like. Good professor for Sociology, make sure you take notes and actually study for tests.
Go to class, take good notes, study quizzes and quizlets, and you'll be fine. I bought the textbook and haven't cracked it once, and I have an A in the class. He gives lots of tests (with essays) but they're easy if you study. He also gives lots of quizzes, but you get 2 tries and they're not bad usually.
He has been the best professor I've had so far at Auburn. McConnell cares so much about his students. Be prepared to attend class and take notes from the lectures. 6 exams, usually 40 multiple choice, and an "essay" question. Really easy to get good grades if you take good notes. would 100% take again!
I loved having Professor McConnell and Im sad to leave his class. If you pay attention and write the notes its easy. It can be hard to get used to, but he makes class so fun and always entertaining. It is by far my favorite class this semester! Take him please!
He's an... odd guy. He is also kinda hilarious though. You have a lot of reading, but it isn't necessary as long as you go to the class. His tests are 70% of the class, but you have a lot of them, and they are really easy (80% MC, 20% essay). He does this weekly quizzes, but you get two attempts and they aren't hard. I'd def take him again.
100% my favorite professor this year. Lectures are hilarious and will keep your attention, and you seldom walk out without a new "guess what my sociology professor said in class today" story. Please take this class if you can.
McConnell is hilarious and very interesting. He makes the content interesting and really makes you want to learn more about the course. The grades are pretty dependent on the 5 exams you take over the course of the semester, but you should do well if you attend lectures. Definitely a class worth taking.
The subject matter can be a little tedious at times but McConnell is really funny, which helps. His slides aren't great on their own so definitely attend class and take notes if you want an A. There were two required textbooks but I didn't use either, so don't waste your money!
His lectures are usually really interesting. If you take okay notes during class, you should be good to go. All of his quizzes and tests are usually straight forward and easy if you just listen in class. He seems really passionate about what he does, and he really cares about his classes.
One of my favorite teachers I have ever taken at Auburn University. His lectures are so theatrical. He likes to take dramatic pauses, go into long stories that do eventually have a meaning, and actively uses his hands when speaking. Take any of his classes if possible!
McConnell is a truly unique character. Hes absolutely hilarious, even when hes not trying to be. He doesnt offer extra credit, and has more exams than most than most, but they arent hard if you attend the lectures and take notes. Definitely take his class if you have the opportunity.
I would definitely take him for SOCY1000, he makes the topics really interesting and he is definitely a character. often tells funny stories or jokes that relate to the content. although attendance is not mandatory I would highly highly suggest going to class as part of the test is an essay topic on the lecture. Also use quizlet to study
Professor McConnell is funny and most of his material is interesting. His tests are mostly memorization and not horrible, but you do have to do the work. You will do better in this class if you go to class. There are 4 tests and a few extra assignments. Not a ton of work.
Definitely take him if you can! His lectures are super entertaining and actually interesting. Notes are posted, but he goes into detail in class. There were 4 exams (the final wasn't cumulative) - 80% MC and a written response, which isn't bad if you attend class and mostly know the material. Highly recommend studying with Quizlet from old classes!
Professor McConnell is my favorite teacher at Auburn. He makes coming to the 8 am class so much more enjoyable. He's funny, relatable, and I would take this class again if given the opportunity. Show up to lectures and take notes, and you'll be fine. He talks slow so it's easy to take notes.
Material is conceptual and theory based. I had a tough time with tests, but quizzes were directly from class. 2 quizzes per week due by Friday. Very enthusiastic about his job. Writing parts on the exams are graded a little difficult.
His lectures are super interesting and I loved going to them, but the tests were pretty hard and required a lot of studying! You'll most likely do better in the class if you go to class. Only 4 tests and a few assignments, so I'd definitely take this class if you can.
McConnell's lectures were always a highlight of my day. He makes tedious lecture material a lot more fun and relatable to learn about. Only 4 tests and weekly Canvas quizzes that commonly have questions from the exam. Be sure to study and you'll do just fine! Go to class, he is such an odd fella and it's enjoyable to watch him!
Professor McConnell is one of the funniest teachers I have ever had. He's always very well dressed and certainly upset if it's cold outside. Regardless, he really knows his stuff. While technically, attendance is not for a grade in his class, you will not do well if you don't attend. There's lots of reading and he grades pretty tough on tests.
Every assignment is online and can be completed using only the readings and PowerPoints from Canvas, but it is definitely helpful to attend lectures to really understand the topic.
You won't regret McConnell's class! He is an outstanding professor. I truly learned a great deal about sociology and felt entertained during the process. How's that for a two-fer?
He is a character! At first you'll be like what the heck he is so weird then you will start to like him. He is passionate about his class which makes it better, really good at teaching. The test and quizzes are simple and he post the slides but I suggest going to class because the slides are dry as a bone
2 quizzes every Friday. Total of 7 exams sprinkled in there. Easy class, never took any notes and I skipped class occasionally. McConnell assigns a lot of reading but I never read anything and still ended with a high B. He talks really slow and takes long pauses in the middle of sentences, so sometimes boring but you can tell he loves what he does.
Such a good professor! Makes everything super easy to learn and super entertaining. Definitely would recommend it!
Prof. McConnell is a really engaging lecturer. He is easy to listen to and explains the content in an interesting and comprehensive manner. There are some bad sociology classes but his is not one of them. Grades are based on tests and quizzes that are all online. Pay attention and take notes during his lectures and you should be good!
Dr. McConnell was a great professor. He lectures every single class, and all tests have to be taken on your own time. He graded with both quizzes and tests. Although attendance is not required, I would recommend you go so you can take good notes to study before the tests, or else you will end the class with a bad grade.
Professor McConnell is great! There were 2 quizzes due at the end of every week and 7 tests throughout the semester. If you go to class and take notes, it will be a breeze, but it would be pretty hard to do well if you skipped class because the slides have barely anything on them.
He's an easy professor, but definitely boring. He called me out on the last day of class for not showing up a lot despite that I put in the effort for an A. In his words: "You are going to wish you'd paid attention to my sociological bullsh*t". He attempts to make his class less boring, but overall I hated the class and struggled waking up for it.
I very much enjoyed Professor McConnells class. Although I didn't always attend given it was an 8am I still always enjoyed his lectures. I found the class very interesting and engaging and he's very funny. 6 exams including the final which is not cumulative and a weekly quiz all of which are taken on Canvas on your own time.Would recommend!
Made an interesting topic incredibly boring. As a graduating senior, I have never dreaded a class as much as this one. Doesn't believe in grading rubrics, does nothing to review for exams, lecture slides are painfully bare. Exams are online unproctored, but assignments have to be handwritten and turned in in-class. Avoid for upper-level courses.
This is an easy class but make sure you do not forget to take any tests or quizzes that are assigned. There are weekly quizzes that are online and you have a week to finish them. But, the class is so boring and do not expect him to round up your grade at all - even .1. He will also not work with you at all.
Mr. McConnell's class was not easy. Very lecture heavy. Barely got an A after doing fairly well on all quizzes and exams. He does not let you access the answers on quizzes so you have no idea what you got incorrect. Attendance is not mandatory but he goes over the slides.
He was a descent prof but the lectures were so dang boring. He tried to make them interesting and would start off the lecture with a fun song. The material wasnt hard but sometimes he'd throw in questions that were so specific and random that you wouldnt think was important to add to your notes. Go to class bc he elaborates on his powerpoints.
This class is a breeze-- as long as you READ. I am not the biggest fan of his lectures, as they can be a *little* dull (the 8am is a doozy). Aside from his lectures, the reading assigned is always very interesting, and I usually enjoy it. The weekly quizzes will sneak up on you, but they are pretty easy. I would definitely recommend him.
6 exams and a quiz every week make up your entire grade. exams aren't bad, taken asynchronously unproctored. If you go to class he explains the slides but his lectures are so dang boring. kind of a weird guy and won't mention exams at all, you just have to know when they are. repeats the same thing over and over again in lectures. talks so slow
He's a good professor! Make sure you attend class to take good notes. He speaks slow but with emphasis so it helps to follow along. You can tell that he is passionate about Sociology and understanding his students. Pay attention to quotes and make sure you do the weekly quizzes. Not a hard class but you do have to study and be on top of your work.
TAKE THIS MAN! i love him. hes funny and chill and he talks slow which some people dont like but it makes it easy to take notes. i recommend going to class, but if you feel like skipping then you can and youll be totally fine. Quizzes once a week- open note and easy if you use the powerpoint slides. Exams are online- not open note but not proctored
Love Dr. McConnell! Very nice guy, hilarious, and loves to tell stories. instead of four larger exams, we had six smaller exams which was nice because they didn't fall on typical exam weeks and was a lot less stressful! There is no extra credit and he doesn't round but if you take notes and look over already made Quizlet's you'll be good.
Very nice! He posts all of his slides on canvas which the weekly quizzes are on.
SOCY 1000 was my easiest class of the semester, but it still took up a good bit of my time because a lot of reading is assigned for specific lectures. Professor McConnell is an amazing lecturer and is great at communicating the topics in a way that's understandable and entertaining. You can tell he cares about what he teaches. Highly recommend
His lectures are engaging, but if you forget to take a quiz there are no redos. He won't open them up again, and says it's a learning experience. I just learned that I'm forgetful. In this class I received a C, but every other class for the semester I made an A. It really drug my GPA down. It's not a hard class, but do not forget a single quiz.
What the other raters say is true about the tests. I just want to add on he does not like to answer questions clearly. I felt discouraged in asking him things because of this. I would ask him about the material, instead he would theorize about what a student could do to prepare without revealing anything. Good lectures, but frustrating.
As long as you go to class and take notes on the lecture, this class will be an easy A. He talks slowly so it is easy to write down everything he says. Exams are easy, online, and unproctored, and all you really need to do to study is read the notes. There is one quiz every week and some are a little challenging, but overall doable. Great professor
really boring
Very interesting guy but the class was easy enough. Just pay attention to lectures and do the readings and you should do well. There's six exams total, including the final, and a weekly quiz (all online). He's pretty funny and really loves to talk. Would definitely take his class again!
Loved him!! He is so funny and kind, and his lectures are awesome! Super interesting, entertaining, and easy to follow. I learned a lot in this class and had an awesome time. DON'T buy the books. You'll only open them once or twice all semester. There's several reading quizzes for supplemental readings, but they're not bad. Highly recommend!
Do not take the advice of the bulk of the previous ratings, as he has since moved to In-Person Exams on scantrons, which are much, much more difficult than any of the quizzes.. Good luck!
Very interesting personality and good music taste but his teaching style is very slow and can get relatively boring along with the dull lecture slides. Tests are on paper and are fairly difficult. The whole topic of sociology itself is very bland and confusing so I don't even recommend taking this class in general unless required for your major.
I hate to do this because he's very nice, but I would not recommend taking him. His powerpoints are mostly pictures and quotes, so you have to take notes just off of what he says. He's very engaging but the lectures are still boring and the tests are very hard. This class should be an easy A, but it's my lowest grade right now.
This class is extremely boring and the exams are way too hard. He does not review anything for exams and does not even tell you when they are, he just expects you to know. I would avoid him at all costs because this should be an interesting and easy topic. Although I do think he has good intentions, for such a simple topic he makes it much too hard
His slides aren't super detailed so it is important to take notes on his lectures, but if you do that and study the key points it's not hard to be successful on the tests! He is very passionate about sociology and does his best to make lectures entertaining.
I took this class because it was a gen ed for my major. I read the reviews and thought he'd be a good teacher. I was wrong. 80% of your grades come from the tests alone which right now has an average of under a 70 for the class. He says that he gives no curve or extra credit which so far he seems firm on that. His lectures are difficult to follow.
Great guy but I had to drop his class since I could not make above a 70 on any of his tests. Very lecture heavy and 80% of your grade comes from 4 tests. Wish I didn't have to drop he's a funny guy but definitely don't take this class if you're not that into sociology/understand it well or really want to commit to studying.
His lectures aren't too bad to follow, just boring. There are quizzes each week and they are based on comprehension from outside readings. His tests are okay but since there is no textbook / homework / review on the material beforehand I found it hard to know what to focus on while studying. Overall not terrible but probably wouldn't take again.
Such a nice human who genuinely loves sociology but man is this a hard class. It is 100% lecture based which isn't terrible BUT doing well on the exams is needed to succeed which can be difficult with the lack of structure provided.
Nice guy! He's very passionate, but this class is difficult. Every class you will just watch him present a PowerPoint. The PowerPoint is not very detailed. I study and still struggled to do well on the tests. It's hard to know exactly what to study. I do not recommend, especially if you are not interested in this topic at all.
Be prepared to teach yourself the material, he doesn't give any help for preparation for the exams. The entire class had an 60% average for tests. Wish I withdrawed.
He is nice and his lectures are entertaining, but this class has been the worst for me. I study consistently, yet have not gotten above a 70 on any of the tests and the exams are worth 80% of your grade. For someone just trying to get a basic social science credit, this was not how I was expecting this to go.
Lectures are extremely important, but are worth going to class for. No busy work so be prepared to study. He's generally a really good professor and I'd enjoy taking another class with him.
Do not do it.
I am a pre med major and this is the hardest class I've taken for no reason... Don't miss class because you'll fail the tests. Well, you may fail anyways because of how ridiculous he makes the tests.
DO NOT TAKE! He changed up his entire course and his tests are the only thing that will affect your grade. He doesn't ever mention the tests, it's up to you to know, and he never mentions any of the material that will be on the test. It's really disappointing. This is the hardest class I have ever taken, and was not expecting.
One of a kind professor. Idk what all the other negative reviews are about, those must be the people who never showed up to class. Show up to class, take notes on every lecture, study those notes before the test, and it's an easy A. This class is simply not as hard as people make it out to be. All you have to do is GO TO CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION!
DO NOT TAKE HIM! Your grade is based strictly on quizzes and exams. This was easily the hardest class I have ever taken. I couldn't pass an exam even with studying. He offers no extra help, resources, or extra credit. He the entire class and most of the time it makes no sense. It's just tons of information being thrown at you with no direction.
Your grade is solely based on quizzes (outside class) and 4 exams (in class). Lectures can be confusing sometimes and you MUST pay attention if you want to write down the correct information. He is a really funny guy and he knows what he is talking about when it comes to sociology. Its up to you to know when exams are/due dates. I would take again!
literally all me and my friends had to drop. do not take him
Your only grades will be weekly quizzes and 4 exams. Do well on those quizzes because they're the only thing keeping your grade up although they're not worth a lot of points. If you don't do well on the exams your grade will tank.
Funny lectures but he makes class way harder than it needs to be. Took as an elective and ended up being my worst grade. Don't take this class if you don't need to.
DO NOT TAKE HIM
I really enjoyed this class the information is very interesting, but it is one of the hardest classes I have taken at Auburn, and I am a senior. If you pay attention and take notes on basically everything he says in class, you will do great on the exams. Attendance is not mandatory, but don't think you will pass if you do not go to class.
He is VERY unwilling to work with you. All of the exams are ONLY on what he says, and he barely has anything on the slides during the lecture. The only grades are 4 exams and quizzes, which makes it extremely hard to bring up a grade if you did bad on any of the 4 exams. GO TO CLASS. Going to class is the only way to do well on the exams.
Grades are solely determined by exams, which are worth 80%, and weekly quizzes, which are worth 20%. You will not do well if you don't go to class; exams are based mostly on what he says rather than what is on the slides. He makes it very clear that he is unwilling to work with you and will not curve, drop, or scale grades.
Do not take this class!!! Test are worth 80% of your grade with online quizzes only being worth 20%. The test are based off what he talks about in class, and his slides do not have a lot of information on them. His test are very specific and can be hard based on the unit.
Most of the information you need for the tests will be on what he says in class. Take notes on what he says in class, and combine it with the information from the power points. Read the syllabus and schedule, review notes before the tests. The quizzes are open note, so take your time and understand the questions as they can tie into the test.
This class truly wasn't bad at all. You should try to go to class most of the time otherwise you might miss some necessary information. Every test was multiple choice and really not that hard. All you have to do is look over the power points and your notes before hand and you should be good to go. His lectures were also pretty interesting.
Robert McConnell is passionate about sociology, but his class was unnecessarily difficult. His exams cover on what he strictly says in lectures, and he doesn't offer extra credit. He doesn't provide clear objectives or study guides, so you have to take good notes. Your grade is 20% for quizzes and 80% exams. Don't take his class unless you have to.
Lecture heavy class. Tests are multiple-choice, but with few questions, missing a couple can hurt your grade. Tests are 80%, quizzes 20%. Quizzes, based on readings, are online. Tests don't cover readings. Skip the textbooks; quiz answers are often online or AI. Minimal outside work—attend class, take notes, and you'll do fine.
Professor McConnell's SOCY1000 class is engaging and manageable. Attend lectures, do the readings, and you'll do well. Unstuck ai was a game-changer for quiz prep. Overall, an enjoyable and informative course.
Mr. Mcconnell is very funny. He plays music at the start of every class. He is very lecture heavy and you have a weekly canvas quiz. Test aren't very hard if you study. Everyone gets the same test and he doesn't split up the room. Take notes and study for tests and you'll surely make an A.
He's a nice person and funny, but his tests are fully off of notes you have to take in classes and it is just really hard ot pay attention because he just yaps for an hour and a half straight. Not my fav professor and I don't like the way he teaches, but can tell he's a nice guy.
I would not take this class again. It doesn't matter how much you study, the tests will always be irrelevant and difficult to do well on. His slides don't say much and he goes on tangents in class that are hard to pay attention to.
Dr. McConnell is very old school meaning that he stands up front and lectures without meaningful slides to review. You have to rely completely on your own handwritten notes because there are no other resources for you. It is also tough to bring your grade up because his weekly quizzes weigh so little compared to his exams.
He is the worst teacher I've ever had, the first day he stated he didn't want to be here. Talks in a dramatic tone that make it hard to listen. Doesn't require attendance but if you don't show up he penalizes you. Only gives 4 written exams and if you don't write them how he likes you will fail the test. Refuse to help after exams for clarification
Mr. McConnell is a great professor! His class is very lecture heavy but manageable if you attend class and take good notes. Don't listen to the other reviews saying his exams are hard, they are exactly what he covers in class you just have to put in the work to take notes and study.
Graded off of four tests and weekly quizzes. Tests are most often pulled straight from the lecture, so I would suggest attending class. Tests are super straightforward - I simply didn't study enough. Lots of reading, but you don't need to do it. Plays a song before class and has a unique sense of humor. Go to class and study and you'll be fine.
This class is NOT hard, but you MUST come to class. Type your notes & write down majority of what he says (easy bc he talks slow and repeats most of things he says) because you cannot rely on the PP's to study. Do good on your quizzes (not hard). It does not take a supple amount of studying to do good on exams. His lectures are amazing and engaging
Class is all lectures, graded on 4 tests and weekly quizzes. Didn't love the lectures but he's a nice person.
He's a nice guy who knows what he's talking about. Also a bit odd. You have 5 total exams that are based solely on his verbal notes (the slides only have pictures and quotes, so writing your own notes about what he says in lecture is key). He does not take attendance, but it is definitely in your best interest to do so.
Great guy, super funny. The only reason I have the grade I do is that I didn't care to study much. His exam layout for the TR class is weird, and I hate it. There was an early September exam covering material from the first week until then, a second exam in the third week of October, and most recently, a third in barely the second week of November.
I loved this class! He is super funny, has a sarcastic sense of humor. Tells a lot of stories that help you understand the topic or become interested in what he's talking about. The class is interesting and I really enjoyed it. Make sure to attend class to do good on the exams.
Very entertaining class!! Lecture slides will not make sense unless you go to class and take notes based on what he says. Very easy to take notes, he is a slow talker and repeats what is important. Easy to get an A on the exams if you spend a few minutes looking over your notes and online quizlets!
Powerpoint slides are confusing unless you go to class! He is a very slow talker which means most of the lectures last the whole class, but he emphasizes the important stuff. I was iffy about him at first but I would definitely take him again!
He's a funny guy but his lectures are slow and sometimes boring. The tests are hard but not unbearable if you look over notes and online quizlets.
Class is entirely lectures, graded on weekly quizzes and 4 exams (one being the final, which is not cumulative). Material is easy to understand as long as you're attending class and paying attention, but can get confusing if you don't listen or go to lectures. Pretty funny and overall great experience. Reading not necessary except for on quizzes.
Funny guy but, sense of humor doesn't matter when you're struggling in an "easy A class". Do not skip!! Overall OK experience once you get the hang of things. Use Quizlet's and take really in-depth notes.
He is the goat. Show up to class, take notes, and you'll do fine on the exams. The slides won't make sense unless you go to class tho
Professor McConnell may seem stern at the beginning of the semester, but I promise he is amazing. If you attend lectures and take good notes, then his class is easy! His class was only graded by weekly quizzes and five exams.
He's a great teacher and the tests are pretty straight forward. As long as you go to class regularly you should be mostly prepared for the test. Must takes notes!
Don't feel pressured to buy the textbooks he says are required, he does weekly quizzes that are based on one chapter that he usually posts in Canvas. He rarely cancels class, he also teaches up till the last day before finals. The tests are relatively easy, they are heavily based off of the lectures (not just the slides) so.I suggest going to class
