This professor gave very clear explanations in class. I did not find the class easy but it the midterm was fair. I hope to have this professor again for my next calculus class too.
Very clear but the notes are difficult to see.
Very good teacher, explains everything, and is entertaining. I hope to have him next semester!
Great teacher, always had time after class to ask questions. told you how he was writing notes on the board which was very helpful. Wish I had him for Cal2.
Its simple mathematics
Very clear explanation
He looks mean, sounds mean, isn’t mean, but still scares the crap out of me. I wouldn’t say that he adds sunshine to my day but he teaches math in a clear and easily understood way. He's a good guy, and a great teacher.
Good Teacher Scared the hell out of me when he pretended to not speak for 1 hour into my first class. HE's funny fun
He is a good teacher.
a wonderful and excellent teacher. all the other professors should take lessons from him.
Fantastic teacher. Clear explanations, does a really good job af showing you how one topic relates to the others. I agree, ALL teachers should take a lesson from him
I took 204 with him.he is a dedicated teacher but he is an old mad with a bad temper..calling people GARBAGE if they come late 10 minutes to class...
excellent professor, very nice man. very very clear on everything, good notes. makes math real easy. WORD OF ADVICE: dont go late to class, he hates that. highly recommended prof.
Great teacher. I was scared when I first saw him, looked mean. However, He was the complete opposite. Best notes and the clearest explanations for math I have ever had. I highly rate this fellow.
The best Math teacher I have ever had. Take him if you want to learn something.
He is one of the best professors in this university .. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This teacher is amazing. He cares about his students and has a passion for teaching. I love his emphasis on proofs and logic. He wants you to understand how the formulas came about and I really liked that. You have to take this guy for linear algebra.
He is perfect, and I have never had the professor like him.You can learn everything in the class, and his notes are very helpful.I wish I could get all math courses with him .
amazing prof.
a great teacher without a doubt. i wish i got all my math courses with him.
He is one of the best math teachers I ever had. He explains everything in details and goes through all the subjects in steps.Defenitely recommend him!
Absolutely the best prof! He makes cal so easy and actually fun to attend. His exams are based on the sample tests he tells you to go pick up and corrects homework in class. I definitely recommend him for anyone wanting to take math!
Great prof, too bad I skipped most of his classes :(
Excellent teacher. His explanations are very clear. Classes are very well organized. Try his classes you won't regret it.Very approachable.
Excellent teacher. He really cares if the class understand or not. The only spot is that he needs to put more examples but a good teacher over all.!!!
He's a nice prof and is very clear
One of the best teacher at concordia. He makes the whole course so much easier. Wish all the teachers could be like him. He explains the materials so clearly and gives clean and clear notes on the board.Would recommend him definitely
He is a wonderfull teacher.
This prof is amazing at explaining principles of mathematics. His enthusiasm is a bit overwhelming at 8:45 in the morning but i guess that onlky applies if your not a morning person. In all this prof makes calculus seem friendly and at the end of it you might even say you enjoyed the class.
Simply, he is the best Calculus Professor in Concordia University.
This guy is amazing
Explains well, very organized notes, and likes participation from students. Course is good overall, midterm was fair; however final was sooo hard, 80% theory!!!!! VERY HARD FINAL!!!
Best Math professor i ever had
he's da best ever ...... wanna an A? he's gonna grantee u man !!!!
absolutely the worst math teacher ever. he thinks he's doing a gr8 job with his notes and his way of teaching, well he's not. doesn't solve ANY examples in class so that u see how it's done, keeps on talking about non important things, and just doesn't make it in time everytime. if u end up with this teacher, u'll have to do it all by yourself.
What a wonderful teacher truly one of the best teachers I have ever had at Concordia, it's impossible not to do well in his class he prepares you well for mid-terms and finals !!! U'd be a fool not to take him
Notes are written by hand on the board so you need to show up. Great professor, explains clearly
the best math teacher/take him
can you imagine a class with 30/40 "F"s...well that is the section of mr.mearns... 3/4 of the class took an F !!! why???main reason because we were not prepared in a good way for the final... simple... if i were you, i will not take any class with this prof.
His pretty funny, his exam aren't too hard nor too easy, if you follow what he says you will do fine. He does tend to repeat a lot of basic stuff, which if you are slower at learning is a good thing. I would recommend him he knows what he is doing and is pretty funny, makes class less boring.
He's a good teacher, assigns a lot of practice homework so students understand the material, offers extra office hours to explain things to students who need help but are too shy to ask in class. Overall, good teacher, explains well, lacks a bit of review for the final, but that's our job anyways. Take him!
one of the best prof you can take if you want a clear understanding in math. prepares you very well for 2 mid-terms and a final exam. ok marker. writes everything on the board. offers out of class hours for help. take him if u want to pass math but put a little effort into it and you wont be far from A+
One of the best 208 teachers out there. No one explains like him he is very clear and gives the best notes in the world study in his class and you will do great. Hats off to Prof. Mearns...
One of the best teachers ever!!! He makes complicated questions easy.He is very approachable. He looks scary but he is very nice.
Guys! If you really want to understand math, take mr Mearns. Very professional and experienced teacher! Great personality! Very helpful and lots of fun!!!! You will not regret it! It iseasy to get a+. Just show up and take all the notes!
Prof Mearns is in my top 3 list of the best profs I've had at Concordia. Go to class because his notes are beyond awesome. He explains the stuff so well that its easy to understand it. Easy easy A+. Very approachable.
He is the best ...
He really enjoys asking for the answers... to bad all the students are all too busy trying to understand calculus. Favorite quotes include "I'M DYING!" and "YOU'RE KILLING ME, FOLKS"
He's one of the best prof. at concordia! If you really want to understand math, take his courses. I will take MATH209 with him if he teaches it. His notes are so good that I dont want to miss any of his classes!
He is the best math teacher I've ever had at Concordia! His notes are extremely helpful (although his hand writing can be sometimes hard to understand!). He is fast and nice when answering questions. His lectures can be boring sometimes, but are mandatory is you want a good grade! Easy A+ if you go to classes and do your work. Get him if you can!!!
He is simply awsome, The best professor I ever had. His notes explains each and every thing perfectly. If you attend class regularly, take notes and do stuff on time, you surely get an A+.
Awesome..Highly recommended..i use to hate Math, It just turned opposite after attending a week of classes with him. Made me love the subject!
The best teacher I've had up to date at Concordia. His lectures may not be the most interesting and people might find them "slow", but his teaching methods and notes really help you understand. He is a dedicated teacher and the course is easy if you attend classes and do the sample exams.
HE is soo helpfull and happy all the time..
Hands down, one of the best profs I've ever had at Concordia! He explains the material really well and his notes are amazing. See him in office hours or after class, he's very patient and is all about making sure that you understand the material. I recommend this teacher to everyone I know taking either Math 208 or 209.
Shuld teach teachers how to teach he is soo organized, clear, and motivated to share his knowledge and he does it in a way which there is no chance that when you read his notes you wont get it
Best Math teacher I have ever had. He works on having you get an in depth comprehension of the material and the reasoning behind it, not simply presenting you the material. You leave his course with a lasting comprehension of the material.
One of the best Math teachers you can have. Super approachable, very clear, very organized and puts students' concerns first. Incredible availability. No reason why you shouldn't do well in his class, although you do have to put in the work for calculus I, he makes sure you get the most out of math. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Very good teacher!!
Best Math teacher at Concordia! Should be the only one who's teaching Math.
A very nice professor! HELPFUL!
he had very good notes, his examples were very easy to understand. I truly suggest him.
very good teacher
Best professor for COMP 232.
Great teacher. One of the best I've ever had.
Best teacher ever for math 204, 205 and any 200 levels. extremely organized, doesn't waste time, very knowledgeable, stays after class until all questions are answered. A++++
Nice and helpful, such a remarkable and awesome prof
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!
He has been teaching for more than 50 years and his teaching skills clearly show his experience, he is really clear and repeat and repeat so it gets into your head. Barely no need to study, just listen in class and read notes. He really understand students learning process, he is really organized and wants you to make structured notes.
Really liked that teacher. Very intimidating at first but make sure to go to office hours and you'll do fine ! I learned the previous midterms finals and got A+ !
W. O. W!!!! best teacher so far... well organized, well prepared for the lecture in each class, very helpful..
Very good teacher! Knows his math.
Terrific teacher. Honestly I missed a lot of the classes because I have ADD and, whatever. But near the end of the semester I started taking things more seriously, went to his review sessions, went to class and thought "This guy is amazing, I should've attended all my classes". I got an A, but would've gotten an A+ if I'd been more present.
I wish every professor was like this guy. He cares passionately about the material, he's funny, friendly, and actually connects with the class. One thing, is the note outlines can be a little confusing. He's just introducing them, and I feel they still need a little polish. Follow and take you own notes, and you'll be fine.
He is old, wears a hearing aid and you may have to raise your voice to be heard, but he is also a very fine and pleasant teacher. He uses his own system of fill-in-the-blanks slides for the entire course. You download the slides before class and fill them out during the lecture. The slides focus on the essential material and provide useful examples
amaaaazing teacher. when i took MATH209 a second time , it was with him. my god let me tell you , my first teacher sucks so bad compared to him , it was as if it was a whole other course. he explains sooooo well, and takes everything step by step. his lectures are very structured in a way to take notes. ONLY THING IS , he could lose patience.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Not only he helped me really learn math 209, but he taught me how to be organizedstructured with my notes and overall how to study in university courses. He writes everything in steps on the board and explains clearly.
I really loved this teacher take him if you could
THE ABSOLUTE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD AT CONCORDIA. EXPLANATIONS ARE CLEAR CUT, HIS NOTES ARE NEAT AND ORGANIZED AND HE IS ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP HIS STUDENTS. WOULD TAKE HIM FOR ALL MY MATH CLASSES IF I COULD
Must have teacher, best math teacher I have ever had, he really cares about his students and does his best to make you understand, notes are clear, to the point , easy to understand. Best teacher for 200's level Math and Comp 232.
an amazing teacher who loves his students and is always there for you
One of the best teachers I've ever had! Always there for students
He's pretty clear at explaining, there really isn't a reason you shouldn't pass if you attend the lectures and actually try. He'll also go over anything you're having trouble with, with you. You just need to make sure to visit him during office hours or ask at the beginning of class. He can be scary at times, but don't let that fool you he cares.
One of the best. Clear lectures, easy exams, he really prepares you to have good grades.
This man has by far been the absolute best professor I've had the opportunity to study under. His notes are great, he livens up the class, and knows how to keep it interesting. His explanations and simple and straight-forward. Structured, well-prepared, and accepts responsibility for his mistakes. Amazing professor 8/8 m8.
Teacher overall very good. Notes sometimes a little unclear. Teacher available for questions 2-3 per week sometimes at odd hours. Teacher unfortunately a little jaded as he has been teaching for so many years, sometimes frustrated when students don't see the apparently very apparent answers jumping out to you.
Amazing teacher! Seriously! If you have the chance to take him, just do it. You can buy the book, but it's not mandatory. I was able to get a good grade without doing the exercises in the book, but you must attend his class to pass. He posts his notes online and you need to complete them in class with him. One of the best teachers in Concordia.
Very good teacher! Very clear and has really helpful slides for each section of the material! He's kind of fast i find but maybe that's just me. Overall super teacher and also very caring for his students. Would take him again for sure!
Clear notes, open to questions. He is a little rough, but he does actually want to help his students. Would recommend because he is organized with notes.
He's a math teacher, therefore he is tests are heavily influenced on proof/math based, and are not as they should be for a comp sci course, which made the work and tests difficult.
Robert is a good teacher. When it comes to lectures and notes. However, he is a TOUGH grader. He does not grade fairly for partial marks. His exams may be very unbalanced. The midterm was not easy but overall fair. However his final was harsh, very HEAVY, very very long, twisted questions, he made it almost impossible for no purpose.
he is incredibly unfair grader. doesn't care if you answered correct or solved it. You lose if you do it any other way than exactly how he wrote it every single line. Final exam was impossible on purpose. Better to take a professor that sucks at teaching but that makes reasonable final exams and grades based on your understanding, not his ego.
Mr. Mearns is quite entertaining in the front of the class, as he makes jokes that we are "killing him" when there is no class participation. Get it? Being that he is old. If you put in the effort, he will reciprocate when you have questions. Midterm was easy but final was very tricky. Practice, practice, practice and you will pass.
one of the best teacher i ever had. he make every topic easy, explain everything carefully, he don't hesitate to remind us old stuff when he saw nobody understand, I highly recommand this teacher
Provides amazing notes, makes the material much easier to understand after the class. Lecture's explain it way better than the textbook could. Will stop to explain the most simple concept if you ask.
Fill in the blank notes. clear and simple teaching methods that make the course very easy. highly recomend
Great teacher.
I honestly do not like the whole fill out the blanks type of note taking as it doesn't allow me to take in what is being said properly what is being written. So I gave up on the outlines and just started taking normal notes as the lecture went on. Prof makes this class easy and makes you understand. No proofs, only calculations.
Except the assignments that were so unrelated to the exams, he was a fabulous professor.
His teaching approach is clear and he will not let you fail. He is a good communicator and he replies to emails quickly. His notes are really helpful and with the homework you will have almost all what you need to pass this course. I really enjoyed his lectures.
he is a excellent prof, really cares about student and makes sure you understand.
Really confusing and unclear, always faces one side of the class and doesn't speak loud enough. He is not a rude person or anything, and he does seem to be passionate about math but can't seem to properly word things properly in order for the average person to understand.
Robert is very passionate about teaching, and is very smart. He wants the best for his students and does try to make the class enjoyable by cracking jokes, despite having 8:45am winter classes. Roberts teaching methods encourage students to attend class, as detailed notes are filled in class time. He tends to fall behind in the material.
Very organised, his notes are wellexplained. He is so passionate about Math. Best teacher.
He is just a great teacher, very nice, do his best to explain the given subjects. Highly recommended.
A very good professor his slides were very detailed for concepts so you have to attend his lectures to complete the blank notes in pdf as he does not post the whole notes on Moodle. He replies via email regularly and is an accessible professor outside the class. He is loud and funny and overall you have a good time with him
He truly cares about his students and does everything that he can to help you succeed. As long as you attend class and follow along with the notes he posts weekly on Moodle, you'll be all set. His explanations are very clear and he always tries his best to get the class engaged. 10/10 gem, take this guy if you can!
I'm terrible at math. If you're someone who finds math easy, he would probably be great. But for me, I did not enjoy his teaching. He rushed through everything and would get annoyed if people didn't have the answer to his questions. He didn't feel very approachable, and I felt like he skipped a lot of steps. Don't take if ur not a math major.
Robert Mearns is the only math teacher to have been able to grasp my attention for 2-3h straight. He gives holed notes, and makes sure you are constantly aware of what is going on. He has office hours all the time and makes himself also available by email. As long as you do the work and ask for help if needed, you will pass. He is the best by far!
He is such a nice gentleman. Always take care of students. Ask if they have any questions. Plus he has very detailed notes that covers all types of exam questions. All you have to do is practice them. Plus he replies to email quite often. He made things very easy to understand.
Amazing prof, really cares that students get his stuff, very understanding!
Mearns is a great professor. Hes extremely knowledgeable and kind and always there to help out and answer questions. Although, he tends to go through the course content quickly and briefly but the assignments are there to get extra practice
He is my first math professor in university. Actually he is very nice and willing to help you. He would explain everything you dont know. He is interesting and cares about his student. We got good preparation from him for the final. I was so lucky to have his class in my first semester.
Really recommend this teacher for math. Hes great at explaining things, and he takes the time to make sure everyone understands the material. He makes himself available for those too shy to talk during class time & he makes the PERFECT slides. Bless his sweet lil heart
Good prof. 2 hour lecture might get boring and heavy. Fair exams good grader. Caring.
One of the best math teachers I have ever had. Robert goes far to make sure you genuinely understand the material and where the various formulas come from. Difficult course made easy by this passionate professor. 10/10
He is very Hardcore on his grading.
He's a great prof, got a D in MATH205 the first time with a different prof, nailed an A- the second time around because of this guy, very good professor. I did 2.5hrs 2x/week for 6.5 weeks (summer class) and he made sure all students knew what was happening in the class, he was easy to reach and his explanations were very clear.
Pay attention, and you shall learn . Robert Mearns can teach math to a monkey, ( and said monkey shall pass exams). You do have to put in work though.
Hes a great teacher and manages to make math interesting! But be ready for the assignments, theyre weekly and a lil long, but his lectures and explanations in class make the homework easier.
He teaches math like it's an English class he print out the notes already and you have to fill in the blanks he doesn't show examples and he doesn't really teach math he teaches the theory of it.
He seems a little mean but it's just his way of staying on track during class. He basically gives you blank notes and you fill them out during class. It's amazing, you can look at the notes when doing assignments and they actually help!
He's rather hard to understand and lately, he's been corrected by students more and more. More often than not, we're behind in notes review. His review for finals didn't align with our assignments. Without a doubt, a very nice man and he is enthusiastic about class but I feel like there's some room for improvement.
Super nice man! He does try to give you tips for the midterm but for me at least it wasn't worth attending the class. It was more like self teaching for me. But he was free after class etc to answer questions. I just wish there was a better way of writing the notes instead of " fill in the blank"... I guess it was his new way teaching since covid
He breaks everything down to small prblms so u can understand the whole context easily. His lecture is easy to follow and hes funny. U can look for him in office hour or send him an email for help, he replies rly fast. However he is old so he talks kinda small and he has mild hearing prblm > sit at the front of the class for better experience.
funny guy sometimes but doesn't really seem to know what he's doing half the time cause he mumbles through questions a lot. attendance isnt mandatory but without going you won't get notes at all (he doesnt post them). meeting with him is frustrating; i got yelled at for asking a question about my midterm and eventually let it go. mixed feelings
His clarification is really clear and accurate. I really enjoy his courses for every minute. Before I took his courses, I always afraid of my math. With his help, I get the confidence to learn math well and try to solve problems by myself. Really recommend to take his courses!
I really enjoyed his class, I think that what makes him stand out as a teacher is that he really wanted us to understand and goes really in depth in why we do the different formulas and etc. I would definitely recommend him!
Took him because of ratemyprof, I regret taking his class. He has a bit of humor but overall not worth it. Lectures consisted of printing a piece of paper with blanks you need to fill in during the lecture, personally not something that helped me learn at all. Midterm was an average D with little less then half of the students having an F.
He is a really good teacher and even tho sometimes what he said kind of mean but overall he is great
He had a slow speed while explaining the content of the class so I can remember the information pretty well. He always reminds us the things we need to remember for tests and his note are super useful for reviews. He also designed a cute ending at the end at the course.
Great at teaching math. Prof Mearns is very experienced, gives great note outlines, and is very thorough with the course material. He would even answer emails over the weekend to help out with assignments. Highly recommend him for any math class you need to take!
Absolute MUST if disorganized & Cal 1 was a while ago! 1) His note outlines are ALL YOU NEED to thoroughly learn the material & you'll be grateful if you retake the class 2) GO TO CLASS 3) DO THE HOMEWORK/PAST FINALS 4) Optional: Asking questions during office hours will help you really grasp the tough material THIS IS THE ONLY FORMULA THAT WORKS.
If you can focus for the entire lecture, that should be all you need to grasp the material. Don't ask questions during class, instead ask them during office hours for a more helpful explanation. All in all, great professor!
Use his note taking strategy and go to all the classes. Obviously, if you hate math or struggle with algebra this math203 is not for you.
He is a very decent and professional Prof., Just get ready to take notes for his lectures as he uploads uncompleted slides.
Gives thorough notes for each topic, but you have to attend class to fill in blanks. Don't be afraid to go to office hours, he will take his time to help you with homework or concepts you are strugling with! Personally my favorite math prof at concordia so far! be careful during exams though, he takes marks off if you forget an equal sign and such
Doesn't use any material whatsoever. Just takes the text book and instantly jumps to examples. Skips over "easy" questions/examples (they are not easy). Makes TONNES of mistakes while doing said examples. I taught myself calc 1 using youtube and other resources, to say that his class was useless would be an understatement.
Amazing professor, I had trouble with this material in the past and he made it look easy. Very funny guy and knows how to give a good lecture. I would recommend for anyone who is taking summer course.
I hate to disagree with most people saying he is a good because he is the worst teacher i had so far. He teaches math on slides and have you fill in the blanks which is so confusing, no practice is done in class whatsoever he reads his own notes from his slides thats it, if you took cal 1 long time ago and math isnt your strengths goodluck lol
Professor Mearns has a unique teaching style that may not work for everyone. While the lectures can be hit-or-miss, he's very approachable and willing to help outside of class. Using tools like unstuck ai alongside the free textbook can make the material more manageable.
Great prof so caring about the success of his students, takes the time to explain things outside of class.
teaching method is very good and efficient. always answer questions outside class. best math teacher i've ever experienced
He makes note outlines we fill in during class. It incentivizes following the lectures and gives you everything you need to review for the exams without too much work. Very kind too. I always had a tough time in math and he demystified it for me
One of the best professors I've ever had! Super patient and clear when explaining concepts. The slides were incredibly helpful and well-organized. If there's something you don't understand, make sure to go to his office hours—he's always happy to help. Highly recommend!
The absolute GOAT of math classes, if ever there's a possibility to take your class with him, do it. Acts like a grumpy old man but is a softy at heart, wants nothing more than to see you succeed. There's a reason why he gets standing ovations after he finishes the last lecture of the semester.
Great Prof, nothing to complain about
He takes almost 10 years to correct an essay .... ridiculous
