I learned alot from him. His homework is challenging but easy if you listen. His classes are very repetitive so you can miss several and still be ok. Good teach though just boring.
Great teacher. Definitely not boring, it just depends on how much you enjoy the subject matter. He thoroughly explains everything and covers it more than once to make sure everyone has it. If you take Astronomy you can't go wrong with Dr. Mohr.

He's enthusiastic, clear, and is very responsive to requests for help (especially when the students take a vote and say "we want...".) Tests are not too difficult, and if you do all the CAPA homework, you should have no problem
He taught this summer at UA. Very good teacher. Loves to help people. Makes you work for your grade, but very fair. Gives ALOT of partial creidt on his tests, and usually curves them. Very smart and easy to work with. I would take him for all of Physics.
Very easy professor. No excuse to make anything lower than an A. Quizzes are sometimes challenging, but homework is very easy. Final exam was very easy too. Easiest science teacher at UAB.
I had Mohr for 103 the semester before and it was the easiest class I had ever taken(easy A). The material was easy to understand and the tests were a piece of cake. But not last semester, I actually worked this time(as I didn't have to in 103) and only made a C in the class.
"EVERYBODY OKAY WITH THAT?" LOL!!! He says that ALL the time! I love Dr. Mohr--the easiest professor in the Astronomy department. He attempts to explain the content, and if you're confused, he's more than willing to help you after class. Three quizzes, two homework question sets, and the final exam.
He likes to give partial credit. Good teacher, although sometimes confusing. Very helpful. Loved him~
I had Mohr for AST 103 in Spring of 05. He is an easy teacher and to make an A all you have to do is show up for the majority of the classes. I really enjoyed it and am taking him again next term.
This class is the easiest science at UAB. If you have a chance...you should definately take him. I made an easy A. I stopped going to class in the last month and I was still able to pull out an A. He is an absolutely wonderful professor and I highly recommend him.
quizes are not easy but you an get a good grade if you do the homework.
very helpful
You'll understand physics because he teaches great, but his test are a bit hard.
Easy teacher. Seems to realize that most students in the class are taking it to fulfill a core requirement and are not science majors. Teaches you enough to be respectable but doesn't bog you down with boring details. Funny, imaginative, friendly and helpful.
A good choice if you just want the grade, not if you really want to learn physics. The semester was one long series of negotiations with the class on partial credit, test fortmat, &c. Sometimes seemed to be stymied by the textbook but was generous with partial credit and creative averaging of homework and even exam grades.
He's a very good teacher. His tests was straight forward and explained the material.
gives bit and pieces of information and expect the student to connect the pieces together. His quizes are weird, the wording is awful, but he knows what he know. Student will have to spend lots of time outside of class trying to understand where the pieces of information fit. If you dont like pressure-take him- If you don't like studying - dont
This professor is amazing. The material is not too easy but he makes it intresting. He is more than willing to help with any problems that you may have and is an all around nice guy. Treat yourself and take this professor.
Dr. Mohr is awesome. He simplifies the material so an idiot could pass the test, and someone with common sense can make an A. He outlines exactly how many questions will come from which particular sections of the material. He will also explain the material again if someone doesn't understand. Uunfortunately, the lab has diff. teachers, and is HARD!
"Any questions?" He says this quote (or a form of it) nearly 15-20 times each class. For someone OCD like me it drives them crazy. His lectures are pretty easy to follow. Tests are quiz-form multiplechoice and usually easy as pie. The lab for this class is a nightmare. No instructions, just a lab packet and a figure it out yourselves attitude.
His class is very ease and he is always willing to help you.....
Great professor but the material can be confusing. Be sure to do your homework!
Attendance is necessary. Questions on test didn't reflect questions from homework. He was eager to help and good with partial credit, but tests were terrible and very, very confusing. I did great in PH100, but failed 201. Know plenty of smart people who also failed. Great guy, but tests suck.
Interesting class. More often than not, you're out halfway through the class, although he offers to stay and answer any questions. Tests always have at least one question that is near impossible, or so you think. Until he shows you something after it that he hadn't shown you before that makes it easy. There are worse PH professors. Lab is horrible.
Mohr was a great professor. I felt he really wanted his students to do well. He frequently pauses during lectures to see if he is reaching us. He welcomes any and all questions. His test are not all that difficult. They come directly from the notes with no suprises. If test scores are low, His easy homework gives you a great oppurtunity to improve
Dr. Mohr seems to have gone downhill. He is a nice guy and everything BUT his test did not coincide with his lectures. When he sent study guides, he did not include some of the things on the tests. You have to be scientifically inclined to do good on his test. I recommend a tape recorder, if those are still allowed??
I took AST 102 last semester, and it was one of my favorite classes. Mr. Mohr frequently pauses teaching to make sure no one's getting left behind, and will gladly answer any questions. Attendance isn't required, but go to class, take notes, and read the study guides, and you'll do fine. He also drops your lowest test grade, even if it's the FINAL!
wow..his exams are somewhat difficult..it seemed like no matter how much i studied, the multiple choices were always what really messed me up. but dont stress out too much because he does give you a lot of opportunities to gain some points before the end of the semester. also, there's something about him that really turned me on. It's probably be
Class was quite difficult. The biggest problem was that he was too smart to teach it. Because he knew it so well he didn't know how to take it step by step. He could look at a problem and know the answer but couldn't explain well how to get there. He would do the first step or so of a problem and then say "Do you see what I'm saying" and then go to
Really eager to help and very generous with partial credit. Just be sure to read the textbook carefully. The study guide is a very loose guide and his questions can be ambiguous. So pay attention to details. Oh yeah, he is totally adorable. And the lab sux donkey.
Very nice professor. He is determined to help you pass his course. He drops your lowest grade even if it's the final! Homework is given to help your grade. He does lecture almost the entire class period every class session. Very concerned, fair, I'm not out to screw w/the students kinda professor!
"Is that good?"
GREAT teacher! Expalins well. Tests and homework is extremely easy!
Great teacher!
He is an incredible teacher! You will do great in the class if you attend and pay attention. He really cares about his students and their performance.
he is an awesome teacher, and was definitely an easy A. Attendance is not mandatory but I would advise you to go. Tests are straight from the notes. I have heard some people had problems with it but in class, if you don't understand what he is talking about, ask him to clarify. He will do everything possible to help you if lost. Didn't use book.
Dr. Mohr is awesome and very understanding! He does lecture the ENTIRE class but if you listen it makes taking his exams much easier. Actually he is so smart until it seems that he is always four steps ahead of himself. But you will love him!
He is a GREAT teacher! I would recommend him to anyone! Material can be hard to understand but he makes sure you get it by constantly stopping and asking for questions. Go to class and take good notes and you'll do well. Tests are straight from the notes.
Excellent professor. A little hard to follow in his lectures sometimes but he will make sure that you understand the material before moving on. Just go to class and do the homework and you'll be fine.
Dr. Mohr was very, very helpful. He makes sure you understand the material before moving on, so feel free to ask questions.
Dr. Mohr is an incredibly good teacher. He clearly is passionate about Astronomy and is very interested in making sure students understand the concepts. He is nice about questions (even when the questions are dumb) and does a thorough review before each test. Go to class, take good notes, and you will get an A.
Very, very good teacher. Makes it easy but is informative at the same time.
Dr. Mohr is an excellent lecturer, with clear ideas and a deep, loud voice so that one can hear where ever one sits in the hall. He is very passionate about space and physics; and as a biology major, I looked forward to every class.
Cool class! Professor very clear and helpful.
He is really good and goes straight from the book and tells you what you need to know for the test. He is a fair grader and you wont lose too much point on wrong math.
Dr. Mohr is a good teacher; however, I wish he used power points or something like that in his lectures. It's hard to follow him since he just talks the whole class.
All lecture class, but he is excellent at explaining Astronomical concepts. Goes at a fair pace, but makes sure every student understands. His tests are not deceiving, and he goes over everything you need to know very thoroughly the day before the test. Has a calm, friendly demeanor, and was always available to help when I took his class.
Great professor. the best ive all semester. really recommend him
Awesome teacher. Interesting class. The material can get confusing, but he's always there to answer questions after class. It doesn't hurt that he always lets class out early. I along with most of the class never touched the textbook. I recommend him.
The material is very interesting. There are no power points or study guides, just him talking. So it is important to go to class or at least copy someone's notes. Never once opened my textbook, you really do not need it. Honestly, as long as you go to the review day before the test you'll be fine. He covers everything again during the review.
Great instructor! I seriously recommend taking physics with him. He is very helpful, straightforward, and easy to listen to. I didn't use the book very much because his lectures are a much better resource.
The best teacher I've had throughout all my years of school, which spans over three colleges. He explains everything so well. You may start class completely lost, but by the end you could teach the lesson yourself. He's very patient and you can tell he wants everyone in the class to understand the material. "Is that good?"
Mr. Mohr is one of the most helpful professors you will find. After literally everything he says he asks the class, "Is that okay?" or "does everyone understand?" Astronomy is a complex subject and he makes it extremely straightforward and understandable. He does review days the day before tests and tells you everything that will be on the test.
He is the most straight forward professor I have ever had. He makes the topics interesting and doesn't go into unnecessary detail. He reviews everything and makes sure it is clear. He reviews the entire class period before the test and tells you exactly what to focus on. I wouldn't bother buying the book, but take good notes during lecture!
Mohr is a great professor if you just need an easy science credit. His tests are super easy and come straight from his notes. Expect to get an A.
Class was really interesting and extremely easy. DO NOT NEED BOOK. I ordered online and never even opened the package. I didn't study for any test and made a B. As long as you show up to every class and listen, you'll 100% pass. If you want an A, show up and take notes. He gives a really straight forward study guide. Easiest class I've ever had.
Dr. Mohr is an amazing teacher, wish I could take him again for Physics II.
Great teacher, his class is very basic and easy to understand. I only took it as an easy science credit since I'm a business major, and it was well worth it. He's really chill, and only gives 3 tests and the final as well as 3 homeworks. Tests are pretty basic, 15-20 multiple choice questions and 2 essay questions that he probably doesn't even read
Like everyone else says, you DO not need the textbook. Great professor, makes sure everyone understands. I don't recommend skipping class, but it's not a big deal if you miss a few lectures because his study guide is great. He gives a homework after each exam but they aren't all that important really.
If you just pay attention to his lectures and then go to the review session before the test, you'll be fine. The homework he gives out is pretty but he doesn't post any grades so you have to talk to him about that.
He rambles on about a lot of conspiracy theories. He mentions the book but you can definitely get by without it. The tests are super easy and he will remove questions that the class was confused about. He's just a cool guy that wants everyone to pass!
Don't buy the book. Lecture-heavy class and he doesn't use Powerpoints or notes to teach so I would recommend recording lectures, taking good notes, and paying attention. He'll gladly go over anything you don't understand. Only 3 tests, final, and 3 homework assignments. He'll weigh tests with higher grades more. He wants you to make an A.
His class is decent but the required LAB TA guy is completely insane. Hardest grader I have ever encountered. Definitely do not recommend taking this class.
He's the best professor to take for PH 201. Believe me when I say I had no idea what all physics was about when I started and I've made A's on his tests. Although I've made A's, I review my material daily and make sure I understand what's going on in class. Only bad thing is that sometimes he is unclear about what is said in the lectures so ask ?'s
Cares about the student a lot. Loves to see improvement in a student from the beginning of the class to the end. Will spend time outside of class to answer questions and also search up and research questions he doesn't know the answer to. Awesome professor!
Possibly my favorite teacher by far. He cares and is open to all suggestions and opinions. This was the most fun class I've taken. The tests aren't too hard if you attend the review section.
Good class. Tests have few mult. choice and are 80% free response. You must really understand material, but not impossible. He reviews what will be on exams and textbook examples that help. Recitation & lab are a toss up, but he may give you points in the end. Homework is online and takes awhile, but some does help you study for the tests.
Dr. Mohr is amazing! I took the AST 101 class this past semester. Just come to the lectures and you'll get all the information you need for the tests. He creates the tests based solely on the lectures. The final is cumulative so it's really easy. I would keep my previous tests if I were you.
He allows a cheat sheet for each test including the final, and my scores didn't improve. Homework was easy and brief, but he would post assignments the day before exams, if not after. Lab and recitation were out of sync with lecture and didn't improve my understanding. Do not take unless you're interested in physics or don't care about As.
Not an incredibly difficult class. He tells you exactly what he will put on the test. Just show up to the review days.
he doesn't teach. i preread the textbook before class then he picks the hardest problem he can find and confuses himself at least twice each lecture. spends 40 min in a 50 min class on 1 problem after no explanation how each concept applies to the problem then lets you out early. I made 100s in physics 1 with prof lawson so this is a teaching issue
For the lecture portion of this class there are very few grades. Doesnt teach with a powerpoint. We cover A LOT of content in class but there are only 15 questions and a discussion question but the entire test is worth 200 points. Added 3 assignments the week before finals (2 lab reports and 1 homework) :/
mr. mohr is super chill and willing to help you. if you don't know anything about astronomy then this class will be a difficult. lucky for me i'm a nerd and i already knew what he was teaching for the most part. don't miss review day and if you're good at memorizing information this class wont be hard for you.
The class is entirely lecture based. During the lectures he rarely references the textbook, which makes it difficult to access study materials outside of the notes. At times, he does not explain things in-depth, or explains them in a way which does not make sense. Also, PSA: do not take this class if you are looking to learn about planets and stars
Man is an absolute beast, if you like astronomy you will love him.
Before taking AST 101, I had heard amazing things about Dr. Mohr - that he was a great teacher with easy curriculum, and that his beginner courses were not hard to pass. However, Dr. Mohr has been the greatest source of my anxiety throughout this semester, and has given me my lowest grade this far in college. I'm not scientifically inclined, either
This was the absolute worst class I have ever taken. Dr. Mohr is a brilliant man and a great teacher for those interested in science but it seems he has forgotten he is teaching a 101 class. He has three tests that are 25% of your grade, six homework assignments that are 25%, and a CUMULATIVE final that is 25%. Not worth my six mental breakdowns.
Took him for 101 as well. Super super easy. You don't need to go to class or buy book. He emails out the notes after each class, and he emails out a study guide before each test that tells you literally everything you need to know. The tests are slightly harder than 101 but labs are much easier and all conceptual. Really study the notes before
Makes the class interesting. I think the people that have trouble in the class are doing so because there are very new concepts to be learned, and they don't have a full grasp of what they mean.
Best professors I've had at UAB. He is able to take very complex concepts and explain them in a way that makes sense. He types notes on a word doc as he lectures and sends them out to everyone. Gives easy homework to boost your grade. He does great review days before the test. Tests are easy if you go over the review sheet
He assigns 3 exams worth 50% of the grade, 6 homeworks worth 25% and a CUMULATIVE final worth 25%. He also waited until the last two weeks to assign half of our stuff. He is good at teaching, but his workload and grading system are ridiculous, especially for an intro level. Take the class w/ someone else. NOT worth the stress it will cause.
If you need a science for credit, I recommend AST 101 and Dr. Mohr. The material was interesting. Dr. Mohr is a fantastic professor. He would make the material simple and easy to understand. He was more than willing to any answer questions. Overall, I have had nothing but a good experience with this class and Dr. Mohr :)
He has a great online class set up. Offers non-mandatory daily zoom calls to ask questions and goes in-depth but posts everything from these on canvas. Super short lecture videos. He references the book but I had no issue never getting the book. The lab was super easy too. Taking him again this fall. Any questions you have you can find online.
Mohr made lectures interesting by introducing complex topics to an introductory class in a simple way. His tests were based straight from his lectures so attending everyday is recommended. Tests were easy if you paid attention in class. He was very competent with material and taught it well.
First time I took him for AST 103 I had a very difficult time understanding the lecture but I still made an A. I decided to take him again and this time class seems easy to understand and follow. Go to class and pay attention. Before the test there is a review day. Also, homework is based on his lecture.
One of my favorite professors and classes, I took him for 101 as well. His lectures are made so that they are easy to understand but his class is not mandatory to attend. He sends lecture notes after every class and his exams are exactly like the lectures so be sure to study the lecture notes. An A is a 88 or higher.
