Hard teacher, Unclear, hard to understand. Boring, hard grader, bad teacher!
All you gotta do is come for the tests, but otherwise don't waste your time listening to his monotonous lecturing voice. The material is very easy as long as your reading comprehension is decent.
He's a really nice guy but wow you should avoid this class if hes teaching it. BORING! and i still don't know what the class is really about...

Mr. Mutti's required text is one that he wrote himself. He teaches *straight* out of it. I only showed up when we had tests and when assignments were due, and I still got an 'A'.

Very easy class. All the quizzes are true/false answers and contain 33 questions. Read Plato's The Republic the entire semester and all classes are optional. Highly recommended professor.
Mutti loves teaching this subject and is really nice and intelligent; however, this is basically a class on grammer and logic and is extremely boring. If you read the book, though, you basically don't have to go to class. Sadly disappointing.
one of the dumbest, most pointless classes i have ever been forced to take.
Very Unclear, Confused.... His class is boring... the Book is boring it self... i fell asleep in class couple times, u sit there listening to the lecture or take pointless notes, you need to understand the book, to understand the class... which i never did... i recommend u to STAY AWAY FROM THE th1s
Class is boring, but you never have to show up. Just go on test days. Only 3 quizzes and a final, all T/F questions. Tests are easy as long as you read the book, his lectures don't help. Recommeneded for ppl who like reading.
I was disappointed. Most of the emphasis on the arts was at the beginning when we read Aristotle's Poetics. Then, you jump into Plato's Republic where the focus is on perfect socieities. I was hoping to look at a painting or two; but "Philosophy of the Arts" was more about classical Greek thought.
His so boring, and many students don't even attend his class. His so much into Plato, and did not offer any opinion or engage students in discussion. Always talking to himself. Very disappointing class, and other readers definitely correct about him.Stay away or otherwise you'll falling asleep.
Mutti really knows his subject matter. A very intelligent and funny guy. This was his first time teaching this subject though--with a little more practice, a little more thought about how to explain the concepts better, it could be great.
ALL about Plato's Republic, but he knows it well. Nice guy, a bit boring but very passionate about his subject. Tests are easy if you attend regularly (though he doesn't take roll). Doesn't answer in-class questions very well. I enjoyed it well enough.
grammar class but I liked it because it's the only class I got an A in at state my first semester. Study the grammar with friends and you will get an A like me. genuinely nice guy, soft spoken. He wrote the book, and there is not a lot of reading. Easy A
borning claSs during summer 2005. but only three tests! only true or False questions! attendance is optional! homeworks are optional but be in his way!
great teacher. very knowledgeable but the class consists of boring lectures and review on the reading assignments. typical snoozer class. you can't get an easy A but if you do the reading and put a good amount of effort then you should pull out with a C

Nice guy, knows subj well. Very open to answr ?s. can be boring but not if u follow along. HW is extra credit, only 3 quizzes & final. able to raise score on quizzes. doesnt take roll. recommend attending, makes it even easier to get good grade.
He was the worst teacher I'm ever experienced. If you had a question because you didn't understand something he would get mad at you. He was the worst teacher ever!!!!!
OMG this class is soooo boring so it makes you lose concentration when he goes over the SAME EXACT material from HIS book.the final is a KILLER!I dont recommend this class lol
Crazily boring. But attendance is optional =D Still, if you work hard at it, read, do the assignments, this class should be easy. But on the other hand.. if you plan on not to study at ALL. doan't take this clss. you'll have a hard HARD time!
I think he's pretty cool. He has that sorta dry sense of humor, so not many people get it....but i think he's pretty funny...I'm weird like that..His tests are easy...He's very lenient on his homework grading ( wh/ homework IS optional)...overall, he's cool in my book
he spells every thing out for you. the only reason he doesnt like questions is because only stupid questions are asked. he gives you everything you need to know plus all his quizzes are open book and open notes!! how could it be any easier.
Was his first time teaching the course, but not very clear or helpful.
Very intellectual guy, knows what hes talking about, at least he sounds like he does. Although, he can be very boring at times. Reading is a little bit difficult. Tests are even worse. Don't recommend for someone with A.D.D!
ok so. mutti is a cool guy. except i don't understand a word that comes out of his mouth or a word in any of the books. i tried doing extra credit but he said i did so bad, that i got zero credit on extra credit. how that happens, im not sure. don't take this class unless you are artistotle or plato himself. booo. :(
Was a good subject, the test were really hard. And the makeups are even harder, i recomend this course to those who like philosophy and dont want the easy !, becuase its not an easy class. He does have a sense of humor and hes a great guy to talk to about other stuff.
he is such a nice guy. he trys hard to make people interested in what he is talking about. i think it is all common sense once you get the hang of it. just listen to what the guy has to say. he is a great teacher!
He wrote the book he used to teach. the book was the hardest thing to pay attention to. he really seems like he loves the class but it was just too boring. i don't reccommend it unless absolutely necessary.
He's a nice man! Always clarifies anything u don't understand! Does everything to help u pass the class! There's 3 quizzes, which are open note and openbook ;-)! but if u fail any of 'em u can do hw, which is optional. OR if u dont do the hw, u can make-up any quiz! for his final he allows notes, open book, and u can bring any of ur quizzes w/you :-
Really nice teacher and is completely willing to help you out if you see him. Classes are short, but if you understand the book, then there's really no point in attending (except for test days). Tests are all true/false and pretty easy. He's a hard homework grader though.
NICE guy :-)! hilarious lectures :-D. does a lot to help u pass da class! there's 3 quizzes, which are open-note/open book. if u fail any of 'em do a make-up OR do the hw. hw is OPTIONAL ;-)! attendance not required unless there's a quiz :-P! the material is a lil confusin, just attend some lectures then u'll understand 'em...
He does his best to make everyone pass his class. Attendance isn't neccesary, homework isn't necessary, you can retake tests, the whole shebang. The subject however is pretty boring and his way of presenting it is very confusing (snowmen are involved!!!).
He's a great teacher. Very easy. Al you need to do is read and pay attention in class. He has some jokes but they're kind of dry. Other than that i have almost fallen asleep in his class because all he does is lecture and occasionally we gather in groups for discussion.
at the begining of the semester i would have given a completly different review than i am going to give now. Mutti is a sweet man, like a silly grandpa. The class is basicly learning how to write mathmatic like sentences with complet disregard to english grammer. the first half is much worse than the second.
The most boring class. He is so nice but his class is awful.
imagine a typical college professor. tall white bearded geeky guy. wears the same shirt everyday. thats mutti. class is easy. grades consist of 3 quizzes and a final. if you f--- up on a quiz(true/false so u shouldnt) u can do a take home quiz. and if ur stupid enough to mess up that he gives hw to fix that grade. lectures interesting but slow.
he is a horrible teacher. he teaches from a book, which he wrote, but then contradicts the book in all the lectures. i do not recommend this guy at all.
Mutti is a nice man, but as a Professor, he's pretty basic. He wrote the book he uses in class, so basically just read the book and you don't even need to show up to class except for the tests. Very easy class, but quite boring, so expect to skip classes.
I barely ever went to class and still got an A. He's too nice. I think either he's been teaching this too long or this subject is just too easy because he seems to give up and end class early on most days. I couldn't follow after the 4th chapter, but writing the second paper helped sum it all up. I still apply what I learned to everyday situations.
he's a piece of****. makes u buy his book which he teaches from. as a student its stupid. we spend money on his book just for him to profit off of it. if u can't make sense of his writing in his book what makes u think u can follow his teaching. No tutoring can help cause the tutor center can't help and his office hours r a waste of time
people say he's easy because it's openbook/notes for the test but people tend to slack off a lot.
the class was really boring and its not like me to ever skip class but i ditched so many times..everything is based on the book Plato's republic..tests are open book and confusing..tries to help u better ur grade by optional hw which was extremely confusing..if udont like philosophy then dont take this class!!!!!
i would rather die then ever take one of this mans classes ever again. he caused so much unnessacary stress, soooo confusing, obsessed with the book he wrote, which doesn't clarify his incoherant ramble! NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Others may disagree, but I find Mutti quite funny sometimes. He knows what he's talking about and always looks very friendly and optismistic, but his grading is hard.
LEctures are boring, but i'll give him that the book (PLATO) is difficult as it is. all test are open book, open notes, open anything really. If you understand the book or dont mind asking a bunch of questions, you'll do fine. Tests are truth or false and he offers extra credit every class
It's really easy to get caught up in classes and miss his, as his syllabus states, "attendence is encouraged, but not required". He also doesn't assign very much or have many quizes, the ones he does are open notes/book. His lectures can sometimes lean on the bland side if you've had a bad day. Also, he has a BIG heart, don't feel intimidated.
This is the most boring class ever
This class is really hard! His grading is even harder, only true/false questions and he grades your essays with a closed mind. He seems interesting and is often funny but if you dont get Plato or Artistole...then he thinks your a rock.
Dry humor, which I think is funny. Open note tests are nice, but it does not make the material simple. Do the reading, the lectures are right off the reading. Classes often end early. Only two easy papers. Don't be late! He closes the door on you, and gives you a bad face if you open it after it is shut.
Fairly easy. I didn't start reading the book until closer to the end of the semester and got a B. He is fair, easy and does offer help if you ask and gives you chances to improve your grade.
This class is so boring...I had to walk out of class a couple of times last semester because I couldn't take it. People are either drawing or sleeping in his class. But I got a B because I read the book at home. Just read and you'll do fine. The tests are all True/False and you have to write a paper at the end.
BORING CLASS EVER!!! His classes are short and boring. He laughs at his own jokes. Homework every time, but you dont have to turn it in. The good thing about this class is that you can use the book during the quiz and tests. There are 3 easy papers. And his book is very cheap compared to other teacher texts.
Boring teacher, but going to class is not mandatory. Tests and final are open note, open book.
Very easy. Open book quizes and final. final is 9pages long but you can get everything from the book. You dont even have to go to class, just read the book. quizes are straight from it. 2 easy essays. I barley ever went to class and I got a C. Im pretty sure you can get an easy A if you actually go to class. Proffessor is kind a wierd though, every
He is pretty good because u don need to memorize every material, and u can bring everything that want while u r taking the tests and quizs.. three written exercises .. the last one was a little complicated.
very nice professor, always willing to help. i went to ask for help about homework assignments a few times and he is always willing to help me until i understood how to do the homework. the homework is a little confusing but exams are open book open notes, which is great if there is too much material to memorize.
Class material is boring. Uses his own book which is very hard to understand. Attendance is optional and ALL tests including the final are open note/book. Easy to pass if you have a general understanding of the topic.
While his tests are all open book/note, I still had a hard time. The textbook (which he wrote) was difficult to understand at times. While attendance isn't mandatory, I suggest going often, especially if you find the textbook confusing, he clarifies a lot in lectures. However, if you can take a different professor for critical thinking, DO IT!!
His tests are on the difficult side, but open book. You really dont have to show up to class as long as you understand the sample problems in the book. This Critical Thinking class is essentially just analyzing sentences. The work level is very easy. Attendance is mandatory. Wont learn anything substantial. Has nothing to do with Mutti.
Goofy guy, easy class. Lectures are boring and confusing but it doesn't matter, everything you need to know is in the book. The practice problems are exactly like the quizzes which are open book/note. Only substantial assignment is the Written Ex. which is really just an outline of an argument. Jokes are so bad that they're good. Recommended for CT
This teacher teaches by snowmen figures...lectures are repetetive and have little to do with the actual readings. I would not take this class, it is not an easy A and teacher does not offer great help.Tests are T/F pretty tricky and I also suggest spark notes
SO MANY HOMEWORK AND HARD EASSY!!
lots of quizs, very hard final exam and giving very low grade with no make up garde!!
He sis not require attendance. But going is probably your best bet. He goes over the homework in class and tells you exactly what will be on tests. Everything is from the book (the quizes, etc) and he even allows it to be used on tests. He is very friendly and helpful. A little confusing but that is just because of the material.
How dissapointed I was to learn that someone that looked so much like Jim Henson could be so boring. He needs to spice up his lectures with some muppets.
He is a nice teacher. He wrote the text book in this course so if you don't read the book go to class, if you dont go to class read the book, although it is kind of confusing. The book is mostly needed for exercises, but the answers are in the back. All the quizes are open note and book. The final paper is just an easy outline.
He's good, not difficult going to class is worth it. Along with going to class
Very boring personality and lectures were dull and lame. The class did me no justice and I skipped it most of the times. I had no interest in what he was saying and it's helped me in no way shape or form. Class dragged on and we had many quizzes although little homework assignments. SKIP THIS PROFESSOR!
THE FINAL WAS SO HARD. The class was very boring, and half the time, he goes on and on about things that normal humans don't understand or care about. I went to class everyday, and I still thought the curriculum was difficult to understand. If you could, try and take ANOTHER class. He's nice, but his teaching style is poor.
He was boring but he was quite helpful. I got a B in the class, although I had gotten A's on everything prior to the final. He grades on a point system, so don't expect curving. We had 4 quizzes, 2 written exercises, a final paper and the final.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. He's SUPER boring and makes NO sense. I somehow managed to get an A- so it's not all too hard but this class was terrible. I fell asleep... multiple times.
Dr. Mutti gives freedom to his students. If all you care about is your grade, all you have to do is to read his assigned materials. He put things into a little-complex way and try to explain it. But in fact, the ability to think harder and understand a little more complex is an advantage for each of us. I think he is wise at teaching. ┼├
If I had to describe this guy in one word, it would be BORING!!! My next choice would be CONFUSING!! I think he even confuses himself sometimes but it's hard to tell because his lectures are impossible to follow. Take my advice: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! You will leave 150% more confused than when you walked in.
Horrible class. Mutti lectures are confusing and very, very boring. Almost exactly the same as the book (which he wrote). He's also a very strange fellow, kinda weirded me out. Take this class only if EVERY other class is filled.
Horrible class. Most boring teacher. He is all about himself, he wrote the book. If you don't go to class you aren't penalized for it but then you have to read the book and it is exactly what he talks about just more convoluted and confusing. Take another teacher!
I am normaly an A student, nursing major. I have a B-/C+. Take a diff prof if you can. He is not impossible but he wrote the text so he explains it in a way that only he understands. Helpful if you go to him but that doesnt mean his explanations will help. Very boring. No attendance BUT GO TO EVERY CLASS! Take good notes bc all quiz openbook/notes
Very hard class because he believes his way of thinking is the only correct way of thinking. Talks down to students and is boring, not only because of the material (which is super confusing) but also because he apparently only owns two outfits.
This class was impossible to go to! The most boring class I have ever taken. If you like classes where you stare at the teacher in utmost confusion, this is the class for you. Seriously, this stuff was painfully confusing and boring. I'm still baffled that I got a B+. He is pretty fair with grading, but comprehension of this subject is futile.
The work is relatively challenging and he's not the most exciting lecturer, but he's willing to help you. His grading policy is pretty lenient, but he doesn't do a good job of engaging the class. If you study for the quizzes and put effort into the written exercises you'll do fine. The material will make sense if you study it.
This is by far the best class I have ever taken. Haters gonna hate but you actually learn a lot from his class. He is a strong indivdual and a comforting one too. The course is really easy if you actually pay attention. It is out of pocket what the dumb ass said about his outfit. Overall this class is really sweet and I recomend anyone to take it!
It's basically impossible to fail this class. The quizzes are open book and open notes. Also, you can miss or fail the quizzes and the points that you get on your final will make up for your lost quiz points. A lot of times, he lets the class out after 20 minutes rather than 50.
You don't have to show up to pass, just do the exercises in the book for practice. Don't even have to read it! He's pretty funny sometimes.
I liked his dry sense of humor. And honestly, if you fail his tests then you must be a complete idiot. The tests are open book, and the answers are practically just right there. Can be a boring lecturer though, but his lectures don't last long.
Agree with the others. Cool guy. Also he reminds me of the tall dude in the movie Phantasm.
sooo easy, this class was a joke! i barely went to class near the middle and end of the semester; only showed up on quiz days. The tests are always open book, all you have to do is do the questions in the book and bring the book every class. lectures are boring, so don't take the 10:10 class, or you WILL fall asleep. The written exercise was ridic
Don't take this class it's awful. He's a really smart guy but his lectures are painfully boring. Don't have to go to class and there is a handful of quizzes throughout the semester. You get let out early a lot. He wrote his own textbook so he isn't very helpful with explaining the material. There are much better teachers out there for phil 110
Really easy class. If you are actually trying to learn, do not take this class, because he usually just contradicts himself and the book, so he confuses you. Also his class messes with your common sense.
Boring class ever at SFSU. MUST STAY AWAY FROM THE PROFESSOR. TAKE A DIFFERENT CLASS. You don't even really learn anything except for doing homework and take the quizzes. He makes you fall asleep when he lectures. Avoid him as possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Besides the open book/notes quizzes, this guy is the worst. I didn't learn anything from him... He makes the class buy a book that he wrote himself so thats basically helping out his own pockets. I had to teach myself everything over the semester. Most of the class didn't even bother coming to class, I did, and when I did I didn't learn squat.
This class was amazing. I thought Critical Thinking was going to be stupid.. Formal logic actually turned out to be the most interesting thing I have ever learned. Professor Mutti was crystal clear about everything. He uses his own textbook, so he explains it easily. Oh, and all the quizzes are open-book and open-note.
The class is easy because of you can use your book and notes for quizzes. However, not a lot of people show up for class since he can't explain things well. He doesn't engage the class and is VERY boring. There are other teachers who are better.
This class was horrible. The lectures are impossible to follow and he assigns his OWN book for the reading/studying so you can't understand that either because it's exactly the same as his lectures. No one shows up because there really isn't a point. The highest grades in the class are C's and the rest are failing. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
This class is very hard to understand. Partly because his teaching methods remind me of math because AB+AD=F. but its philosophy..That's literally how I understood it. AND his handwriting is incomprehensible so good luck. If this is the only class available to add then I'm sorry.
Uses his own textbook so has his own methodology of teaching the course.Handwriting is absolutely dreadful!Lectures are very boring, doesn't engage students' attention. Open book/notes on quizzes. You basically teach yourself. He talks like you're stupid if you don't understand the material, makes you feel dumb. Not very helpful when seen individually
omg this class was SO BORING! I barely went & just studied the book by myself & went to his office hours to check if I'm doing his written assignments correctly and what did that get me? A solid A bro. Don't blame him. Just study on your own it's SUPER EASY and you'll be fine. p.s. I was stuck with this Prof cuz all the other classes were full
He is confusing. You need to work really hard in order to understand. The good thing is that he let you use notes and textbook during the quizzes and tests.
If you dont keep up w/ doing the chapters in his book it will be 90% impossible to catch up. The course as a whole is hard but he does know what he is talking about so he can help you. But class is 100% boring and you wont understand anything hes saying unless you read the chapters in the book.You.have.to.study.the book.or.else.u.wont.pass.
You don't have to go to class all the time and you wont miss anything. As long as you read the chapters and do practice exercises, you will be fine. And he will help you if you need to during office hours. And being able to use book and notes for test is always good!
I advise you. Do NOT take this class. If you can avoid it, avoid it! He's helpful if you meet him at this office hours and he's responsive to your emails, but the class itself is terrible and he teaches poorly.
such a confusing class. he wrote the book and his lectures are so confusing. attendance is not mandatory at all and you can just look at the syllabus for tests. he grades a little hard so be prepared. if you can avoid, try to. but if you put in effort im sure you can get an A
good professor?he gives less homework and extra credit
His teaching methods confuse me and his sloppy handwriting didn't help either. He makes you buy his own book and teaches you all about it. I was lost from the very first day. Don't take him.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS! He is super confusing. Thinks he knows everything, but doesn't. He makes you get his book and everything is just super confusing. Example: If A, than not B. or if not a, not b. that's basically all he says
He's a really nice guy and he'll answer any questions that you need to have answered. The course itself and his teaching style are both very confusing though. Personally I wish that I had chosen another teacher
Well, Prof Mutti is a great guy, I mean hes nice and all, just has an unorthodox way of teaching. You can tell hes passionate about phil. just doesn't know how to convey the information. You must read his book and if you have any questions just go ask him, he usually helps you if you put in the effort. Written exercises were pretty easy as well.
My friend & I decided to take this class together because a friend who had him the previous semester said he was an easy A. UNFORTUNATELY for us he changed his standards of teaching this semester and made everything hard to the point of ridiculousness. His grading & teaching method makes no sense, I hardly learned anything. I don't recommend
The textbook is heavily used and the guidelines were very clear to begin with HOW TO ACHIEVE AN A. However it is not easy to achieve that grade. Class tends to be around 30 minutes which isn't a bad thing but the way he presents each topic confuses the students. Do all the excercise and ask questions, if not, you're in a for treat during the quizes
Mutti's class was amazing! He wrote the book that we use in class and his writing and his lectures are equally hilarious. Make sure you just actually do the assignments and don't cut class and you'll be just fine.
he's ok as a teacher, but pay very close attention to his instructions and ask questions.
Terrible class, worse teacher.
4 quizzes and 2 written assignments. Class in general wasn't hard but the way he explains things can be pretty tricky. It's a more self taught class
Has a very confusing way of teaching. His lectures are not that long. Go to office hours if you do not understand something. I wouldn't take his class if you are not interested in critical thinking overall.
Attendance is not mandatory. You have quizzes that is open notes and open book. Professor Mutti is very hard to comprehend. His material is fairly confusing and hard to grasp even if you try to teach it yourself. The textbook we use is his own so everything he goes over is straight from the book. He was not clear with his course outline.
Robert is a really nice prof but his grading criteria sucks. he relies mostly on your quizzes grades and the majority of the class get c and below because of how confusing it is. barely any hw, don't have to attend class but if you want to pass I recommend that you do attend. I wouldn't take him again thats for sure.
Professor Mutti is one of my favorite professors. His class is really tough but with a little studying and reading of the book, you can at least get a B on the quizzes. There are only 2 written exercises of homework and only 2 times the homework is mandatory. If you ask questions, he will answer specifically. Definitely a harder class but worth it.
This class is VERY hard for anyone who isn't interested in logic. He talks as if we all understood what he was saying, yet every time we take a test, our class never does well. He knows we aren't doing well, yet he does not change his approach. "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
I like Mutti. He's a really nice guy. His lectures are kind of hard to understand but ask him a question and he'll give you a straight-forward answer. You only have 2 mandatory homework assignments. 2 papers to do which aren't really papers, just outlines of a paper. He has super messy handwriting and likes to abbreviate everything
Took PHIL 110 with Mutti in Fall 2016. He was good at explaining textbook concepts (he wrote the damn thing, after all) and skills necessary for tests. However, he was pretty bad at explaining and giving feedback on the two written exercises (essays). He could definitely be worse, but I'd recommend at least looking into other PHIL 110 professors.
Pretty much self taught the entire semester. He's a nice bruh but his lectures aren't interesting at all, it's confusing, and you're only graded on 4 quizzes and two written assignments. If you read his textbook, you'll do fine but tbh just find a diff prof if you're not that excited to think critically
Mutti has outdated teaching methods and STRICT, PUNITIVE grading criteria. He has the tendency to belittle students for asking questions even though the students (my classmates) are never the problem. His textbook is unclear, to say the least, and when you ask questions about the discrepancies he condescends your comprehension ability.
Go to class! Skipping will only hurt you in this class. homework is fairly easy but make sure you turn it in on time as well as the papers he assigns!
