One of the best teachers at Auburn. Easy to do well, all you have to do is talk in class. He's easy to get along with! GREAT TEACHER!!!
As long as you participate in class and keep up with the reading responses you should be ok in his class. He has a great sense of humor and loves to know more about his students. I would have to say I would get him again if I had the chance.

I love this teacher. He is very funny. Participate in class and just keep up on the reading responses and you will be fine!
Mr. Nagel is a very good teacher, he will help you for your upcoming classes and how to approach them and write good papers for them. If you participate in class and trun your papers in on time you will do well in his class.
I am a junior and this is the best teacher I have had since I started. He is very helpful, assigns interesting readings, and will work with you to receive a good grade. He is laid back, enjoys getting to know his students, and is a great teacher.
Fun and easy
great teacher, as long as u participate in class, always willin to explain further is someone had a question. made a few fridays optional to give help on papers if u wanted it, if not then don't have to come. highly reccomend his class.
mr. nagel is awesome! very cool! very helpful!
he is the most laid-back awesome guy...even though i already loved english, he actually made me love going to english CLASS. i tried to get him for great books, but he fills up fast! Be lucky if you have him!!
This teacher is great! He is so nice and he's the coolest teacher on campus. You'll be really lucky to get him
He is an Awesome teacher, very understanding and will help you out as much as he can. I highly recommend him.
awesome guy. Great teacher, he does like for you to participate in class. Just give your opinion on the issue. I would recommend him.
interesting teacher. Very interesting guy. Likes alternative ideas. He is unwilling to accept the usual interpretations. Still say hey to him when I see him on campus.
Interesting teacher, use book/notes/etc for papers and tests. Not too hard of a grader, but be ready to work.
Uhm.... a forewarning to all you cute girls out there. He's pretty creepy. I really like his class though, but don't be surprised if he stares at you the whole class...
ABSOLUTLEY THE BEST TEACHER OUT THERE... HE IS AMAZING!! I TRIED TO GET HIM FOR GB'S BUT HIS CLASS FILLED UP AFTER SENIOR REGISISTRAION... HE IS AWESOME!
Nagel is a great teacher...likes for you to speak up in class but it makes the class go by faster if you're actually participating. Definitely try to get him for Great Books.
The greatest English teacher that I've had. He is also an extremely nice guy.
If you like entertaining...go for it. If you want to learn, don't even think about it. The class was a complete waste of my time and very disappointing after a wonderful Great Books I class with Dr. McKelly.
Liked the class ok, but probably wouldn't get him again if I had to take another English. But liked his class overall.
VERY nice, Very open-minded and easy. Respects all opinions and welcomes all ideas, I would take him again!!
Mr. Nagel is extremely nice, but you don't do anything in class but sit there and talk. Hey, it's an easy grade, take him if you can.
He is the nicest teacher out there. I tried to get him for GB1 but his class fills up so fast. He rocks big time.
He is the nicest teacher and he always chat with our class.
he's definitely a weird one..seems real scary the first couple weeks but then you realize he's a really easy teacher after all and we only had to do one essay the whole semester
He's a great guy and likes talking about everyday things. As far as his class, it's really easy and he grades very fair. I've made all A's on his papers and only spent half an hour on them.
Is real cool and loves to have discussions in class. If you turn in everything and show up to class he'll pass you. Take him if you can get him.
Every book we read had something to do with sex. Much more interesting than Dracula or The Odyssey!
This man is the greatest English teacher ever. He's very lenient about when you turn in all your reading responses and you only have to write one essay the entire semester. The tests aren't too bad if you study for them. He's extremely helpful and genuinely wants you to do well.Get him if you can!
Funny guy, really likes to relate things to sex...but overall a good teacher. He loves history, and if you have a basis in it you will do well. Tests are all written, and often times he will only require one paper from you. If you like A's then get him. Fun class, loves to talk.
GET THIS TEACHER!!! HE IS AWESOME!
Take this teacher... He is the coolest you will ever have. He's really sweet and wants you to do well in his class. TAKE HIM!!!
Yup, pretty much what everyone else said. The sex discussions stay in the class room. It's only a problem if there's lots of frat boys or other pervy types in your class.
This class was amazing. It made me want to read my assignment and come to class. I would recommend anybody to take him. Essay tests were in his summer class and were relatively easy if you take notes.
This guy makes class a lot of fun and is very laid back. You have to read in his class to make a good grade, but not a lot. You will be glad you had him.
Great teacher, makes you want to learn, and do well in his class.
Nagel is the man. The class is so laid back that it makes it easy for anyone to join in on discussions. He knows his stuff and knows how to relate to students to make the class interesting. This is a stress-free class as long as you put forth a little effort. You will actually not dread going to an English class for once.
Great in class discussions and lenient grading.
He is overall a wonderful teacher. He is very casual and makes the class room fun. He is also serious though, but do expect to talk about sexual issues! He is lots of fun, and makes the whole process easier. His tests are essay, but you get to bring your books and outside materal. He is a great teacher, highly reccomended.
Nagel is this shiznit and makes class very fun, he will help you during office hours and during class. Tests are open books and open notes..just make sure you understand what he is asking and you will do fine. I either have an A or high B
He is a very smart guy and good teacher, but he expects you to answer his questions using specifics. If you write essays that are to general, you will get hammered on your grade. If you figure him out early, you will do alright. Not an easy class; you must read the material.
Very interesting teacher. All of the literature that we read dealt with gender issues, not sex. He is a laid back teacher because he comes in 5 minutes late everyday, but that just gives you time to talk with your classmates. You have to read the assignments to keep up, and the essays, well you have to get straight to the point.
great guy, great teacher. just keep up with the readings and make sure to write down anything he interprets out of the text, especially about gender roles.
The class is half athletes if that tells you anything. Pretty easy class if you figure out what he wants. Supposedly as long as you try you at least get a C. Lectures can be frustrating because the whole discussion goes way away from the reading. Read and analyze the material and you will breeze through.
Unless you're an athlete, DO NOT take this class. Maybe 1 or 2 people will see an A on exams. Lecture stems away from readings and leans towards sex. Some of his analyzing is far-fetched. Unit exams become rediculously long if you make him mad. Be careful about this class.
Great Guy, but the class has athletes enough said! If want an easy A he is NOT the teacher to get! His grading is unfair. Athletes in the class give minimal effort and get an B, but even if you try and work harder he selects his favorite athletes mostly swimmers to give his A's to, so you'll still get a B. Pick an easier teacher if you want an A.
good teacher. work is on positive grading system so any writing should contain no fluff. talk some in class, keep up with the readings, put good work into the reading responses and you should do fine. good b/c tests are open book/notes/reading responses and at least one question is always pretty similar to a response you did. take him
best prof. for lit/comp. you will get an A if you talk to him and talk in class. grades pretty easy for papers. There is a reason all the football players take him.
Great teacher. really helpful. his assignments were always fun and sometimes he would just have you write whatever you wanted. I still say hi whenever I see him and its been three years. take this class
Great teacher. He throws the rule book out the door when it comes to properly writing essays and papers. He is more focused on making sure you write an interesting paper and not so much an MLA format paper. If you need a little more time writing a paper it's not hard to get an extention. It's a very intertaining class as well. Take his class.
I've also heard that even if you turn in the worst paper you've ever written, as long as it looks like you tried, you'll get a C. Nagel's a really nice guy and always makes class interesting. The final exam was a joke. I would definitely take him again.
Such awesome, funny guy. I have never even almost fallen asleep in class because we always have interesting discussions in class. Writing in his class is fun because you can do virtually anything you want. Definately taking him for world lit next year!
Nagel might be a good teacher for Comp but not for World Lit. He picks wierd stories to read and they are often hard to interpret. Only one paper and the final is short.
He is definately an off-beat teacher. He doesn't follow the rule book. You can add pictures and colors to your essays, he wants you to express yourself. All the athletes take him, but he definately isn't the easiest english teacher I've ever had. Class discussion isn't boring, and is usually off topic.
ok this teacher has great ratings, and yeah he's funny and his class is enjoyable. HOWEVER if you're looking for an easy A, which i know i always am, this teacher is not what you're looking for. i mean, good luck finding an english class that you can not go to but still, he doesnt grade easy and you have to put alot of work into your writing.
He's a very good professor. He wants his students to write to peers instead of "educated adults," so the style of writing may take some time to get used to. It's not hard if you actually try; I made an A on every paper. If you take and interest in the topic and have fun with your papers you'll do great. I'd recommend him to anyone.
Nagel is an interesting teacher. He does not follow normal writing guidelines. He makes you write very informal. You can use pictures and stories in your papers. His writing techniques take some time to get used to. I liked it at the time because it was easy to write, but it is now killing me in other classes because I still want to write that way.
Nagel is an awesome guy. Take his class but here's your warning he does not just give out A's! I work my butt off and can't seem to make an A on my essays. I do feel like he picks favorites at times but he makes class so enjoyable and you really do learn a lot. Talk to him after class and put forth effort & you'll make an a or a b
recommend his class, but it's a little confusing. Not overly difficult but you have to adapt to his writing style and to what he wants, and sometimes it's hard to figure out why you didn't make an A on your paper and someone else did. Grading seems random based on how much he likes you and how much you make him laugh. awesome guy though
This class is very subjective. It's fun because we all talk about random stuff the whole hour but I can't seem to make an A. If you don't like to talk in class or if you're not funny, don't take him. But if you are extremely outgoing, take him. He picks favorites based on if you're funny.
good class
OK so this guy is funny and the class is interesting to say the least but DONT TAKE IT IF YOU ARE A SERIOUS STUDENT!!! there is absolutely no structure to the class and it kills you when you get to later classes and have to write formally! its a great class for a laugh but not good if you care about GPA and what you need to do in class!!!
Pretty cool professor. He will help you if you ask him and he's easy to get along with. LOVES class discussion and your best interest would be to attend this class or you may FA. As long as you give input and have well written, specific responses to the readings you should be fine.
pretty good teacher. He grades pretty easy. Attendance is MANDATORY! As long as you participate in class discussion and attempt the reading responses you'll definitely get an A. He likes to hear interesting facts about you or anything basically. He'll give extra credit for the most random things.
You'll do great as long as you read the selections and go to class. Some times he checks notes, but only to see if you have them, he doesn't actually read them. I suggest getting him on MWF b/c he keeps you the entire time. He's really helpful and a pretty cool guy. I got an A :)
Great professor! Best World Lit teacher I've had. It's a very discussion based class so if you don't like to talk you won't like class but he's really easy on the grading as long as you do it. The writings are all opinion and informal. Take Nagel!
I was in his Lit II class - I am a science major and this guy made me think OUTSIDE of the box. It was an AMAZING class, by far the funnest class I have taken over three years. Youll get some average grades while adjusting but he will help you out. I learned a ton. Checks notes, has reading responses, and large papers. TAKE HIM.
Awesome Guy, really funny and laid back. Class is interesting and not to bad. He grades pretty evenly. He will always wear a UF hat every day to class. I always speak to him when i see him around even after I have had his class.
Very strange class. Sometimes it was fun b/c he's very casual and wants class to be interesting, but he often took that to an inappropriate level and made people feel really uncomfortable during discussions. No matter what you do, you won't get an A. Completely arbitrary grading, you'll never know what he wants.
Take him!I love Nagel. Really laid back. All writing is informal and opinion. He will let you write on whatever you want really, as long as you support it with quotes. Class could have been about 5 minutes every day but it was dragged out. A reading response is due pretty much every week. A lot of reading/writing. Final is just old essay questions.
It's really important to get Professor Nagel to like you. His teaching style is really laid back and he likes class participation. Work hard on the essays he assigns, because that's basically the whole grade.
I really enjoyed Dr. Nagel's class. It exceeded my expectations for a comp class. He wants you to think out of the box, and you will more than likely have to adjust your writing style (he likes informal). Our final was turning in our last paper, bringingeating food, and talking about the research we did! Super fun class.
Writing papers isn't my thing but he made the class very interesting, and since it was of interest to me I put more effort into it. Basically your whole grade is papers, but if you follow the rubric given its hard to not make at least a B. Compared to other comp. teachers, Nagel is excellent and I would take his class again.
He's a laid back teacher, and an even more laid back grader. All you have to do is hand him an essay and you'll get a passing grade. BUT the instructions he gives are very unclear. It's hard to tell what he wants you to write about (Like if he wants you to argue a subject or analyze it). He loves to cover 'controversial' topics, so be warned.
Probably the weirdest class I have ever taken haha. Your papers are informal, and you are supposed to use first and second person in all of them. Trust me if you take a class with Professor Nagel it will be like nothing you've ever seen.
He's a funny guy and likes to make class interesting. He gives extra credit for participation and random questions he asks in class. His essay's aren't particularly hard he's just never very clear when talking about the topic. It would be a really good idea to see him during office hours and ask questions, he'll probably like you more for it.
Easily the worst English professors I have ever had high school or college. You will learn absolutely nothing in this class, and you will be graded 100% on how he is feeling that day. He gives absolutely no basis for his papers. Also, he is uber liberal. His grading was clearly slanted so us girls did better overall in the class. Overall not fair.
If you care about your grade, you need to drop this class immediately. You will not succeed no matter how hard you try. Why? Because he doesn't tell you what to do or what you're doing wrong. You don't even know your grade until finals come out...
Mr. Nagel is super chill, all of his essays are relaxed. Tells you exactly what he wants on the essay, you just need to pay attention and its all good.
What a guy! If you love humor and puns, you'll love him! Forget everything you learned about formal writing and pack as much humor as possible. Listen to what he wants and do it EXACTLY and you'll be fine. Ask a lot of questions and if you have something remotely interesting about yourself, milk it for all it's worth.
A real gem, Mr. Nagel is most likely not like the average literature professor. The class is surprisingly relaxed, and there aren't a large amount of essays, rather participation and discussion are the center of his classes. Definitely speak up in his class - but don't worry, it's not hard to do.
UNPREDICTABLE CLASS. PRO: Very laid back & we can cuss in papers & what not so thats cool, but the dude is never clear with what he wants. CON: You will be up all night slaving over this amazing paper & get it back and make a B-. Ridiculous. He also loves class discussion & involvement which is fun until he calls ppl out and makes things uncomfy.
I will admit he's pretty humorous, but he will call you out if your dozing off. Unclear what he wants in your paper, and sadly you find out when you get it back after its graded. You do have some homework assignments weekly, but its short and easy. Advice: put everything listed on the rubric in your essay, he follows the rubric very strictly.
You write informally, so throw out everything you learned in high school about writing, because those rules don't apply. You have 4 papers, and small homework assignments from the book every so often. Participation really matters, its 15% of your grade. If you make sure to follow his rubric and engage in class, you'll be good.
Great man. Honestly one of the best professors Ive ever taken and I heard hes teaching a literature class next semester so Im definitely going to take it. Hes a really caring understanding professor and will listen to you and help you with everything. Basically tells you how to cite your sources on research papers and lets you write informal.
"I don't give A's" he literally said that to us on the first day. I got A's on every paper and assignment but he still gave me a B in the class. He was kinda creepy toward some of the girls in our class and kept asking one if she spoke Hindi just because she was of Indian descent. Uncomfortable class experience.
Loved this class! Pay attention to details and cover sheets for papers- he tells you what he is looking for and will listen if you ask questions. Write informally, saying things such as "like" in papers is totally encouraged! Your class will be really close by the end of the semester if you have fun with it. Final is an informal speech w food!
Follow his instruction sheets and grading rubric exactly. Pay attention to what he says he wants during class. PARTICIPATE! It's 15% of your grade and the only reason I didn't get an A. He's random and a little weird, but its very entertaining. Papers are very informal. He really pushes appealing to your audience so peer edits happen often.
Professor Nagel is so awesome. He is a very unique guy, making each class exciting, interesting, and engaging. The work for this class was also not tedious as other composition classes I have been in, and was also quite enjoyable. I highly recommend taking any of Mr. Nagel's classes and getting to know such an entertaining and enjoyable guy as he.
PARTICIPATE PARTICIPATE PARTICIPATE!!! If you participate in his class you will get a much better grade not only because of participation but because of how he grades papers. He is a very relaxed guy and makes class fun. We essentially talk the entire class period and it makes it very interesting and go by very quick. Take him 100% if you can.
He is a very cool person, but a terrible teacher. Claims all the information you need for your papers is on the rubric but even when you think you follow the rubric he will still give you a B. Worst part is he won't tell you your grade in the class at all until you see it on your transcript. He acts like he is so chill but he grades papers so hard.
The class itself was usually very laid back and fun, but Professor Nagel is a tough grader, and rarely ever gives As on papers. You have to participate and you can only miss 4 classes unexcused before he fails you. Textbook is required for homework/reading assignments. Wouldnt take him if youre looking for an easy A
Will NEVER give you an A on a paper (we wrote at least seven). Unclear and inconsistent grading criteria. Doesn't actually teach in class, just talks about whatever he feels like. He also kept asking what an Asian American student's "real" name was and made several transphobic comments both in class and to students. Super uncomfortable class.
TERRIBLE. When we moved to online this semester I knew it was not going to be good. It also was awful when we were in class. He is terrible at explaining what he wants out of your papers. He lets you resubmit but its very frustrating when you thought you did it right the first time. He is a also rude and disrespectful to students.
Honestly, Nagel is simply unfair. His grading system is the biggest mystery in the world because he doesn't really tell you how much anything weighs or uses canvas. You basically have to hope that your participation is good enough for his standards or you're just not gonna get an A. Super uncomfortable class too with the topics he talks in class
nope nope nope. hated this class. never specific about exactly what he wanted in the essays and graded harshly. also never used canvas so you don't know your grade until the end of the semester. participation is very important during class to him.
Dr. Nagel made me like english. His papers took a different approach, they weren't full of meaningless guidelines that hinder your creativity. If you stay on topic within your writing and listen to his advice in lecture, you will make an A in this class.
His class has absolutely nothing to do with the topic. Treat his class more like his political and cultural opinions and you are forced to agree as the grade. But not only do you have to agree, you have to find examples to justify his opinion. Took him for American Lit... learned nothing about American Lit.
One of the most confusing professors that I have ever had. His assignment sheets made absolutely no sense and he does not understand how Canvas works. If you put in effort and somehow understand what he wants, you will do fine but ugh. He does not show your overall grade in Canvas and when I asked him what my grade was he said "that's not my job".
Nagel is the strangest teach I have ever had. He has no idea how to use Canvas and does not show you your grade. His grading doesn't make sense. Going to class is mandatory and he has 0 filter about anything. Work load wasn't too bad. Read short stories, did notes, and reading responses. If you take him prepare to possibly be uncomfortable in class
I enjoyed Dr. Nagel's class. He is very interested in his students and their progress. He makes an effort to get to know you and your background. I felt a little lost at first but just write about your interest and insert humor. He encourages you to write what you enjoy so you can add curse words, fake stories, etc. It made the class more fun.
Professor Nagel is by far one of the most enjoyable teachers I have ever had. Yeah, he can be a little unclear on directions and assigns a lot of homework but I enjoyed going to class and learning. He loves learning about his students and is a great person as a whole. Attendance is mandatory and you can't miss more than 5 classes . Highly reccomend
So amazing best teacher I have had at auburn cares about you and your grade in the beginning seems like he doesnt care at all but he does I promise just show up to class and talk to him and he will love you
Mr. Nagel is an upperclass elderly white man so many of his perspectives are formed around that. Discussion is very important in the class and also extremely uncomfortable as his favorite topics are things that most would not prefer to talk about with their professor. Be prepared to read chapters of the textbook that he can't remember assigning.
Very little work outside of short chapter notes every once and a while. Essays are short, easy, and extremely informal. This class is super easy and Nagel is a Professor I would take again
Mr Nagel is VERY lenient on assignments and when things are due. You do have to attend class, but it is not a horrible class at all and is actually pretty fun. There really isn't that much reading. He also lets you resubmit essays if there's a ton of problems in it, so that is cool. Definitely would take him again if I had too!
BANGER professor! Coach Nagel was the best English professor I've ever had. He made it easy to pay attention as long as you participate a little. Definitely recommend Coach for your ENGL 1120 experience.
we never actually knew what our grade was the entire semester. take everything you learned about english over the past few years and throw it out the window; he wants you to write informal and playful essays on serious topics, and will count off if it is too formal. nothing ever makes sense
Nagel is not a good professor. He has uncomfortable lectures talking about sexual things and different cultures. He wants students to engage but no one feels comfortable talking about those things. About 7 papers and reading due every class. His grading is confusing and hard. You must participate in class discussions or you will not do good.
Nagel doesn't know how to use Canvas, so don't expect to know your grade until finals are over. He discusses sexual content/other topics you would rather not discuss with a professor in class. Participation and class attendance is a must. Even if you think you are a decent writer, he give you the grade he wants to give not what you deserve.
Only word I can think of to describe this class is just odd. Nagel doesn't use Canvas except to turn in some assignments. Grading is very unclear and only letter grades. Expected to constantly read and take notes in the textbook. Discussion is extremely important, and they often include uncomfortable topics. Just know its a weird class.
He uses his class as a way to talk about controversial topics, politics and such things. He also does not use Canvas so be aware of that.
Got sick for 3 weeks. Was transparent, showed him Dr. notes. Had a 94 in the class going into finals. Gave me a C on participation and blamed it on absences. AND graded it on a GPA scale so I got a 2.0/4.0 (50%). Regular scale would have kept my A. Got a B in the class. Taught from wrong book. Wanted pics in our papers. Political in class. Joke.
Nagel's class is a bit unconventional, but engaging if you're willing to participate. Bring your textbook and prepare for thought-provoking (and sometimes uncomfortable) discussions. unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep.
