Nice guy, BAD teacher. Don't take unless you want to cry yourself to sleep.
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE LECTURES. WILLING TO HELP, BUT IT'S LIKE HAVING AN ENTIRE NEW CLASS CAUSE YOU HAVE TO GO TO OFFICE HOURS SO OFTEN. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE
big nelson has a speech problem. similar to ben stein in ferris buller's day off very slow speaking and boring. but i thank him for an easy lab course and the grade of b.
This class is torture, and with Nelson as a teacher, you'll probably consider suicide. His lectures are impossible to follow. He has absolutely no people skills or teaching skills. EVIL, EVIL, EVIL!
Lectures aren't worth attending. Test are very difficult.
The class is boring, so is he, but the 2 facts are unrelated. Very nice, but if you ask a simple question, he'll go off on an hour long lecture. Knows a lot of history stories and knows the politics of physics training, but doesn't know how to tell them.
TALKS TO THE BOARD. BORING. VERY DIFFICULT TESTS.
this clas absolutely sucks... if you can take it at a comm college- DO IT!!! but, one good thing is his curve... he curves like crazy, so you really can;t get that bad of a grade.
4 exams, 1 final and you get to drop 1 exam. i didn't learn anything, but i still got a B+. i never got higher than a 53 on any of the exams. thank god for the curve.
Dr. Nelson is a really nice guy, although his lectures are boring, he does mean well. Instead of going to lecture all the time, i went to his office hrs. The one on one session was better for me and he also knew me by name. I got a c.
Horrible lecturer. I never went to class and pulled a C. Curves are really nice and he is nice, he just cant teach.
his lectures are so boring that they make me sick. i often wanted to scream and bang my head against the wall after the lectures ended. he is nice though.
WORST TEACHER I'VE HAD IN MY LIFE.This guy has no business teaching at a university! He talks to the board in a monotone voice, works out problems a mess all over the board erasing and scribbles everywhere.ANYONE COULD TEACH BETTER THAN HIM!
Incredibly boring! Very disorganized. We had to do a bunch of lab reports. Honestly, I got nothing out of this lab. If you can, take someone else for this lab.
He is nice, but absolutely the worst science teacher i have ever had. He is no help in lab, even giving the wrong info. When he does lecture, it is monotone and absolutely no emotion.
Mr. Nelson is a very nice person (just a little shy). Easiest teacher for this class. The alloted time for class was from 12:30-2:30, but were always out of there before 1:30. He hardly ever lectured and you could leave when your group was done. Take him
Mr. nelson is a very nice person. he does not lecture much which is good because the activities are very easy to do. you just do yous lab and you can go home. who is going to teach real science at elementary level anyway? but he does help you if you a
Easy class, instead of lecturing he lets you figure out the answer in your groups. Never stayed the entire time that class was sceduled. Take this class with ease if you have a semester that you think you will be overlaoded with work.
very nice but seems as tho' he's scared of talking 2 the class>but u dont really need 2 hear what he says b/c you do Labs in groups! Do ALL the labs and hw and u can get a good grade! He grades pretty easy!He drops 1 test!(but if u ask a ? b ready 4 1 hour responce:) NOTE: dont take Roader for this
Easy class. Left class early everyday and still ended up with an A. Curves every test and you can drop on of them. Highly recommended.
I hardly ever went to class, turned in homework sporadically, did well on tests and got an A. his lecturing is not good at all, he is very knowledgable just not good at teaching. Very dull, always out within an hour...low pressure.
Probably the best teacher for this class. Such an easy class and such a nice, yet shy guy. Always leave class early. Tests are curved. Doesn't seem to mind late homework. Easy A!
Come on guys, he was sooooo easy. Us girls really enjoyed his class.....he's so shy and sweet. You have to admit this CLASS is a joke, so he doesnt have much to work with....We heart you Nelson!
This class is so boring but no matter what you should get a B or an A in his class. This was the hardest class to show up to but if you need a class that isnt to hard then take him!
Are you kidding me? This class was the easiest class Ive EVER taken in my life! ... Yes hes boring, NO u dont learn anything, But I got a B and took it with a smile. He curves the tests to that the lowest score is a B. You are guaranteed at least a B. We only stayed in class about an hour, hour fifteen tops!
This professor is horrible. take Dimauro if you can. everyone thinks it will be a better class but it is not, even with the smaller section.
I was scared coming into this class but it's ending up ok. The grading scale isn't too bad, and it seems like he really wants his students to do well. Lectures are hard to understand so I basically teach myself from the book. From what I've heard, I would go with him over dimauro.
Let's be frank, physics sucks. It's either you love it or you hate it. With that in mind, I love the way this guy teaches. Dimauro seriously has ADD, while this guy is clear and concise AND doesn't make you feel dumb for not understanding physics! He's methodical and has the ability to answer your questions even when you word them incorrectly. A++
This guy lives and breathes physics. Lots of material, homework was optional. Grade based on best 3 out of 4 tests. Final was not cumulative. Major curve for course, he really wants all his students to get atleast a C.
I really believe he knows his stuff very well, but common, he cant be serious with his lectures. Smart man, not a smart teacher that is for sure. Pretty easy to get a good grade, easy curves, n attendance taken ever.
Ok, this guy is exremely intelligent but he should not be a teacher. The lectures are super boring and everyone i took the class with ended up doing better when they stopped going to class and just read from the book. Curves are crazy so if you don't want to learn anything and are ok with getting a B go for it.
in lecture he is about as interesting as watching paint dry. I just stopped going and eventually had to teach myself. Good curve and the homework is waaay harder than his tests
Absolutely horrible. 400 students & half of them dont show. lect lack any info, over complicates subject. take at CC atleast you'll learn the material, plan on finding an online source to learn with. book is useless, just as dry & over complicated as him. heavy curve on test.~3 exams some w only 10 Q's raising the likelihood of failure.
HORRIBLE!!!!!! he talks to the board and can't answer a question if put on the spot. he is horribly awkward. tests are ridiculous and he isn't very consistent. can be fine one time and horrible another. lectures are incredibly boring and useless. AVOID!!!!!
Dr. Nelson is the worst teacher at SDSU. I have taken 7 chemistry courses and several biology courses and Dr. Nelson is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. His lecturers are extremely boring and useless. The class is not hard, but he makes it unbearable. If you are pre-professional health DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Remember physics is on the MCAT
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!!!! Teaching is one thing robots cannot do.....Dr. Nelson is a robot. His lectures sound like they have been recorded and played back by a 90's mac. If you need a good nap mon, weds, and friday take this class. If you want to learn take physics at a CC.
This guy probably has a time machine or a shrink-ray in his basement; he really knows his stuff. He's not too eloquent at teaching, however. The lectures are in fact incredibly boring and useless. I only went to get the hw assignments, and learn the exam dates. You're better off learning from the book than going to lecture. Premeds, take this at CC
I do have to admitt that he is very intelligent and knows his stuff...however my gosh is he boring and dull and a bit awkward, has no type of interaction or social skills. he is very sweet but just difficult to interact with. His lectures are usless because he does not make the connections to the material, he kind of just lectures random topics wit
Kindhearted, Intelligent. Comes across robotic, monotone in lect to +300 students. Doesnt thoroughly breakdown material so its easier to understand. Doesnt elaborate on what's important to know. HMWK doesnt always relate to exam material, makes it difficult to know what to practice. 4 exams, lowest dropped. read every chpt thoroughly!!!
This guy is SO monotone that you can't help but start to daydream or fall asleep. You can barley hear what the guy is saying. He doesn't use ANY technology in his class i.e. no blackboard, no online homework, no online study guides. Tests are not overlly difficult but you have to be able to read and study the book yourself. No need to attend class.
Let's keep it honest. If you want a good grade in Physics, do not take it at SDSU now that Laduke is gone. Nelson was horrible. He would have to curve the tests so much because everyone failed. He does not explain the material well, there are a few multiple choice questions that determine you grade. Save yourself and do not take this course.
This guy was the worst professor I have ever taken. Don't take this class at State, do to SDCC and you will do way better. His lectures are pointless, the book used for the class was difficult to understand, and the exams were a freaking joke. I feel like the university should pay me back for the money I wasted on this class.
this professor was just the worst ever. seriously, it has been the worst experience I've had at SDSU.. do not take it there, see other alternatives to get the credit. he curved the class so much that I got a B, and I failed all 3 exams, and I never did any of the homework (which is not even mandatory).. in essence, never learned anything. bad.
Does a much better job than people give him credit for. He gives his best each day and is generous with office hours. Do the problems he assigns and you will do well.
I enjoyed this class, mostly because of Dr Nelson. He's much funnier than a lot of people realize, but he's totally deadpan about it. Physics is hard, and a lot of the bad reviews are from people who didn't bother coming to class. I did, and this guy was quality. Old school, it's true, but quality.
Hes nice but old fashion. He doesnt post anything online, you have to go to his office to find your test grades. Didnt learn anything, honestly. 3midterms and a final. Drops one midterm. Curves alot! Everyone does bad but in the end he curves. Good luck!
A lot of people are critical of Dr. Nelson, who doesn't deserve the negative comments. He really is a genuine teacher who cares about his students by making sure they are working hard. He isn't very exciting during lecture, but he does get all the relevant information across. The big thing for the class is to do the homework and truly understand it
This professor was totally useless for me. He is technologically handicapped -- he couldn't even use the projector, he had to write out his lectures on paper and use the glorified overhead to allow us to use it. He pretty much follows the book, which is your only chance of passing the class unless you learn well by his monotone lecturing. Not good.
Run, Run away. He sucks at teaching. I didn't learn anything from him, taught my self everything. He's confusing in class, and makes mistakes all the time. I have heard if you go to his office hours though he can help you. But Thats not a Prof. He can't teach. And he mumbles. Hes a really smart person, but sucks as a teacher.
Horrible teacher. Stands in one place with a monotone voice and talks about his notes he put on overhead(which aren't clear). Whenever someone asks a question, he is no help, acts all confused and goes off on some random tangent.
The point is, I don't pay all this money to go to a school where the professor is a support for the podium. Useless and boring lectures, no explanations offered, rarely looks up if people have questions, just ignores them. Hope for a low class curve and do well on the two first tests. Passed and know nothing about physics.
TWO WORDS: HORRIBLE TEACHER
Bad teacher, hard class. It is passable though. Curves heavily and drops lowest test score out of three. Tests have an easy "concept" section that you can guess because tests are multiple choice. No credit given for completing the homework or attending class. No way around it, physics is tough.
Meh, this guy is pretty bad for a teacher. He's usually always looking down when lecturing on his notes. He's pretty slow when it comes to someone asking a question as well. You will probably need to read the book yourself to understand the material more clearly. Overall he'll just make you miss high school teachers.
His teaching skills have definitely improved since I last took him in Fall 09. He still needs to learn how to not read from a paper while lecturing though. There are 4 multiple choice tests that consist of a Conceptual Section and a Problem Section (total of about 15 questions.) I found the Conceptual Sections to be the most difficult.
Principle of Physics is the HARDEST class I've ever taken. And this teacher does not explain this subject well. Four tests, one test drop, 50% is a C, 10 questions per test (multiple). 90% of student don't show up out of 300 students, 20 shows up. Studied book for hours and wasn't so clear. Wanted to learn. The next level of physics is WAY easier!
I actually enjoyed physics in high school, but Nelson takes literally all of the fun out of it. Dry, slow lectures lull most people to sleep, at least those who aren't confused by what the hell he's trying to teach. Just grit your teeth and get through it cause there's no way around it.
All he does during his lectures is read off his own notes of the chapter. He rarely takes his eyes off his paper while mumbling what he scratched down on his paper. Doesn't explain anything at all either. He's a very smart man in his area of research, holding many patents. SDSU should keep him in the lab. He doesn't know at all how to teach.
Nelson takes time getting used to but his lectures do make sense if you work through the class notes and work instead of memorizing. Incredibly nice teacher who gets a bad rep because everyone feels frustrated with his lectures. Tests were fair considering the material, and really requires more than memorizing problems. You will have to work in this class, that's the only way.
It's just like what everyone else has said here: all he does is stand up at his little podium and read off his notes (which are as legible as chicken scratch). I didn't even bother going to his lectures; I just studied on my own and still passed his class.
Really nice guy, but horrible teacher. Has a huge curve though from the beginning of the class, and makes it a bigger curve at the end. Tests are usually 9 questions so know your stuff!
He is a great guy who really cares about his students and he does try to connect with you. I agree that he can be hard to follow. However when it comes to test he is fair....most questions are straight out of his notes or the book. He is a great guy makes me sad to see these rude comments!
Take the time to go to class, all the examples he uses in class will insure you an A on your test scores because they are the same. He is shy and knows physics to well, so if he goes fast just holla at him and he will slow down. Oh and yes U HAVE TO READ TO GET AN A+, end of story.
This class is really boring, but what can you expect? Teacher takes this into concideration and it is impossible to fail! MUST READ TEXTBOOK! Memorize all concept qustions. Know the basics about every section. I never went to class and studied the book like crazy 3 days before the tests. Not only is like a 70 a B, but he still curves.
everyone is so harsh towards him. physics is not interesting to most and this is not a class you can just slide by in. do practice problems and see him for help. the tests are 13 problems all multiple choice. if you do the problems go to lecture occasionally and review you will be fine
Very Very easy C, Very easy B, and easy A. Dont even buy the book or go to class. Just find out the day of the test and take it. Even if you fail the three of them you end up with a C. I got A's on both 180A and 180B, did not go to class ever! just get this requirements out of the way, take the classes at the same time you will do fine
All he does during class is read off of his notes, which he puts up on screen for everyone to scribble down. his handwriting isn't exactly the best. it would make more sense for him to print his notes. He curves incredibly leniently. I had 122 out of 200 points and got a B-. Very boring teacher, but very lenient. read the book!
pretty pointless to attend lecture. sometimes you will see what type of problems he finds important but he's confusing and unclear. attending 8am lecture wasn't worth it. everyone "shares answers" on exams and he doesn't really seem to care. maybe get together with a group and try to tackle this course together. i learned nothing but got an A.
got an A in both 180a&b, but I had to read most of the chapters & look thru the hw problems. his lectures are okay Sometimes attending lectures can be useful but not mandatory Before a test, he usually tells u what u don't need to study & what u need to focus on. Curves generously and super nice and adorable BUT read and study the book! Good luck!
I hated this class. Nelson is very unclear and confusing. Lecture is pointless, you never learn anything. He just reads off his notes in a boring monotone voice. I find physics difficult and he does not help me learn.
Nice enough guy but the class format was pretty much a waste. Tests are multiple choice (conceptual, computational) and the lowest score is dropped. Easy class to pass because of curve, but I don't feel I learned much. Lectures were nearly identical to textbook material, not much in the way of unique insight. You can use older edition of textbook
I am so sorry for those of you who HAVE to take him, like I did. He stands in the front of the class, and "follows" pre-written notes on the overhead and that's it. He talks slow and is monotone. All his notes are online, homework's hard, tests look nothing like the homework, 4 tests, only 3 count. I'm sure he's a genius, but he cannot teach at all
I never have posted on here before but there is just no way I could keep quiet about this professor; worst teacher I have ever had in my life. If you take this class and plan to learn anything from this guy...I wish you luck. I taught myself far better then he ever could; expect to do the same.
Profesor Nelson is hands down the worst teacher I have ever had at any level. Maybe 20 kids show up out of 350 because he is so useless. He will avoid social interaction at all cost so don't try to talk to him. He is so far beyond useless and you will learn absolutely nothing.
horrible. just plain horrible. the class is basically a guessing game with tests being 100 points, about 10 questions each, multiple choice no partial credit. 50% is a C so as long as you get half right on tests you can pass.
First off, He's a terrible professor who can't teach to save his life, and U WILL HAVE TO TEACH YOURSELF PHYSICS, but i cant help feeling sorry for the guy... u can tell he's a guy whose been stepped on all of his life... but he is really lenient with the hw, just email him and he will extend the dead line for u every time
Be prepared to teach yourself. Take advantage of the textbook, tutors, and youtube videos! He's a nice enough person, but he can't teach to save his life.
completely useless professor, download his notes off of blackboard and read them out loud to yourself at home, because that is all he is going to do in class. The lack of teaching at this level is astonishing, why pay someone to do their job for them
I found Nelson to be complete incompetent as a teacher. All he does is read from his premade slides, all of which are barely legible because they're written in cursive. Physics is hard enough as it is, throwing in a professor that can't teach really doesn't help.
While not the most intriguing professor he is absolutely clear about expectations and does not "hide the ball" when it comes to exams. Probably one of the most fair professors at SDSU. His exams test your knowledge and don't try and trick you.
Uses old fashioned pre made overhead slides to teach. Very Lax during tests, but material is very hard to self teach.
He is just awful, completely and thoughtfully a terrible teacher. Regardless there is no other choice at SDSU for 197, so... good luck and have fun trying to learn solely from the book.
20% of the work is 80% of the grade in his class. I gave him a rating boost because he is not using masteringengineering for P197 this semester.
He is not good at teaching Physics and he lectures by reading off his class notes, so find someone to help you understand the material. There are 3 exams and one non- cumulative final. All of them are multiple choice, and they are doable as long as you go over the optional homework. He drops the lowest score and the minimum passing grade is a 50.
Good luck with Nelson, you're gonna need it. He should not be teaching, he has no idea how to. I didn't even bother going to class, just on test days. All you have to do to pass this class is read the textbook and do the hw questions he assigns. Tests are straightforward. The class is on a huge grading curve, you need a 50% to get a solid C.
By far the worst teacher i've ever had, after the first few weeks the lecture was pretty much empty, absolutely no point in going. He simply can't teach. Though the curve is pretty big, so its easy to pass. Hell in my year he gave everyone a 100 on the final because he left the answers on the test, just goes to show how unorganized he is...
