Charming,intellegent,well-spoken..super-sexy in my opinion as well.
sponge-worthy and fascinating
Easy if you got to class and follow instructions. Very helpful and fair grading
Mean; likes himself alot
hardmarker! good teacher, sweats lots, kinda a jerk but will help u understand.
makes you work hard. but you learn
Agree with EVERYTHING he says or FAIL.
An inspiring man. Truly authoritative.
Made Inappropriate comments about my faith.
So passionate, he made Neitzsche exiting. a poetic lecturer.
incredibly smart, not too pompous, good sense of humour.

Well, he is okay. Gives you second chances at Papers & regrades them.
As long as you recite everything he says in class you'll do great. He's a very interesting teacher.
He explains concepts very well. He does expect very good writing in his classes. He is very fair to all students. He will help any student who asks. He is more interested in the student learning than he is grades.
An excellent prof that gives equal chances to all. He gives learning key importance rather than the grades. Never says no to a student in need.
Ignore what other people say. This guy is awesome. He is very involved in his discussions and explains with great clarity. But is a hard marker.
If I were guaranteed an F in this course,I'd still take it because of the profound & disruptive way it has jarred me out of the ordinary. Bob is an oft-grumpy genius who stealthily provides free logotherapy as he lectures. Thank-you, Dr.Nicholls :)
he's an AWESOME teacher!!!
I love Bob! I agree with the other comment don't listen to other people this teacher is brilliant and he's only sarcastic to people that act like idiots. *Cheers*
Slaps people around with his PhD. Didn't get any papers marked by drop date, failed six people. Take his class at your own risk. Very arrogant.
hard grader expect to work and to understand. he will help you if you need it, he is understanding as long as you are there to learn
Absolutely the most brilliant teacher I have ever met. I feel sorry for those who don't experience Dr. Nicholls. He will change your entire way of looking at life.
This instructor is thoughtful and insightful.
He is amazing at getting you to question the "obvious" and think about the maybe-frightening truths about yourself and life and people in general. Tough marker, but only because our generation was taught so poorly in English during the early ye
Besides his endless sweater vest wardrobe, and the constant use of the phrase "Oh i dont know" ... he is a great teacher. Marks really really hard, but for good reasons. Dont talk back or act real smart, he'll catch you on it and make you look l

He's probably one of the smartest teachers I have known, passionate, and teaches well. However, dont take this class unless you have at least 3 or 4 prior PHIL classes because you WILL fail. He has too high of expectations for a 100 level class.
He is a deadly hard marker, barely tries to help you. His phil. is more like English. He is smart, but he expects too much. 16 people failed in 2 classes...shows u how good he is
My favourite teacher ever. He is brilliant. Beware: he will make you either work or drop out, he may call you stupid (not in so many words), and he has an arrogant swagger about him. He is the most fair and intelligent prof I've had.
this man has no empathy, he runs his class with a mixture of fear and humiliation, and his grammer is atrocious. his textbook is one big gramatical error. I would strongly recommend avoiding this professor.
Anyone who contends that Nicholls tries to employ fear or humiliation in his classes is obviously not much of a contender, and therefore, will probably not be much of a contender in life. Suck it up! Good marker, Fair, Awesome Teacher, highly recomm.

He was a real hard-ass with no teaching skills, he had no interest in his students and had no wishes of ever giving reasoning for his marks, he's still remembered 6 years later as one of my worst profs and I absolutely love philosophy.
you better be a philosophy nut if you plan on taking this class. Don't take it just because the course description looks interesting. This prof has a God complex.
Has the best lectures ever!! Straight forward, and to the point, is a fair marker, you have to put your time in to get a good mark - if he sees overall effort and improvement at the end of the semester, he'll grade you accordingly.
He's easy if you make sure you understand the work, and is a pretty fair marker!
All I remember from his class was the first day of school he said "call me Dr. Nicholls not Mr. Nicholls, I did not go to school for 8 years to be called mr." His class sucked and he's arrogant.
His lectures are extremely interesting, yet you might want to think twice before taking his class, unless you got proficient essay skills. He is a really hard marker.
Nicholls is a good teacher who involves the class, and ensures that everyone understands before he moves on.
Man, my very first impression of him was when he told me that I "would have to dine elsewhere" when I tried to pull out my lunch. The initial intimidation gives way to an intense interest in the material he teaches, which is great. Gives fantastic comments on returned essays; incredibly helpful.
He's a very interesting person and makes sure that you understand the material. You just have to make sure you work hard. He's also extremely charming and his smile lights up the room!
He is a very hard marker, I think his class average is like a P. Just doesn't like to see students do well.Always talks down to his students. I wouldn't take this class
I was confused during the whole course... I'd get good marks sometimes, bad marks sometimes... I don't like this mannerisms... But I really don't know. He talks a lot about stuff that's not on our textbooks.
Excellent instrucor! Has a strong passion for his work and this is evident in the high standard inwhich he teaches. He is fair and brings social justice to class. If you are a serious learner, then take one of his classes. He is highly intelligent, knows the subject material well, excellent within his lectures. How he teaches demonstrates true
I had him as a guest speaker for a week. It seemed like he talked down towards students. I find him to be boring but hes a philosophy teacher and philosphy itself is a boring subject. I can't give him real ratings so I give him medium ratings.
Probably one of my favorite teachers to hear speak, but he does have very high standards. i liked his sense of humor, he would basicly make fun of us to amuse himself.. 1/2 way through the course i was scared that i shouldn't have taken it, but I'm glad i did because I've used what he taught me in almost every class since. got a B trying hard.

arrogant and conceided. marks very unfairly on essays and likes to write negative comments all over it.
he is a bad instructor thats all.... sighh...
very mean to students, almost impossible to understand the STUPID textbook he is writing that he makes you use. Avoid this guy at all costs!
It's rude people like this guy that make school intimidating and discouraging. And it's also people like him that make the Canadian school system look like crap. North America ranks low in educational standards. What a disgrace.
This guy needs to learn something about manners. Gets into my personal space too much.

This guy has absolutely no respect for students. He is not willing to help anyone and expects graduate level writing in a first-year course. He brags to everyone about his PHD degree. Not a good atmosphere to learn in as he tries to discourage students and intimidates them with his remarks that make no sense. Will never take him again, EVER!
god i couldn't stand this guy for 2 weeks. He makes you use a textbook that was written by him and it makes absolutely no sense. What a waste of money. This guy needs to get laid cause obviously hes a boring loser that only thinks useless philosophy 24/7.

he looks like Mozart and he freaks me out!
If you have no interest in philosophy and are not prepared to work hard for your grade - do not take his course. With that said, he is a very interesting individual, who is passionate about what he teaches. You CAN do well in his course, you just have to put effort into it, and actually be interested in the suject.
An overall WONDERFUL teacher.
A proffesor who looks down on his students rather then helping them, strokes his ego at the expense of those who dare ask a question, avoid his class with a passion

Terrible teacher. Constantly condesending. If you want help he tells you its your job to figure it out he can't help you. Doesn't respect students and your scared to make a mistake with the fear that he'll make fun of you
In our class he ridicules us.
I have never failed a paper before until this class. It's 3/4 into the semester and so far over half my class is failing. He is a ridiculously hard marker and contradicts himself constantly. He expects far too much out of first year students and constantly mocks people for not having read Dante or Hume. Avoid this teacher if you value your GPA.
I didn't listen when they told me he was an self-absorbed imbecile. My bad. And by my bad, I MEAN my bad. He is obsessed with his PhD and his own UNPUBLISHED textbook which he forces us to memorize (isn't that against a law). He puts down everyone in the class regardless of their grade and fails a ton of them. Don't make the same mistake I did :(.
This guy thinks hes something special, thinks hes some kind of gift from God. He really deserves a punch in the face. I hope he gets killed one of these days. What a pompous piece of s#1T.
Extremly condisending and unhelpful. He seems to enjoy seeing his students suffer. Wouldn't take another class with him ... EVER.
He has some kind of inferiority complex. Must of been teased on when he was growing up or something, thus the reason why he tries to make himself feel better than everyone else. I pity the fool who talks down to his students.

He can come across as very mean however if you ask a stupid question he will give you a stupid answ and in doing so make you feel dumb He sets you up for failure on the first assig but allows you to make up for it later If you want help he is more than willing to meet you half way. His classes are hard! He challenges you to THINK! not regurgitate
VERY difficult marker, making it difficult to keep oneself motivated to do all 3 assignments. And if you don't do all 3, you fail the entire course. He's a really nice person, and aims to help students do well, though could do to be a little kinder in the marking.
A definate hard marker. He feels as though this college course should be equal to a university course, so expect a difficult class. He is understanding but has his own opinion about things. He is definately quite the character. Overall, he's a nice guy, hard, but nice. Goodluck :D

worst prof i ever had! honestly, the only thing i regret in my life is taking this class!!! such a hard marker, gotta use his own words all the time....he is crazily obsessed with his book, and honestly, i dont kno why he even wrote it...half of it is impossible to understand, and in class he just basically tells us what he wrote on every page of i
I think hes pretty dope
Really awesome prof! Really fruitful lectures! Challenges you! He wrote textbook for Critical Thinking course - really helpful! Entertaining also!

horrible prof.. first time i ever failed an exam in my life ... doesn't help you if you don't understand concept at all could be a good course just take it with anyone else
Best teacher ever.

Excellent mant to learn philosophy from. You have to be good at essay writing and do all the reading though, but he lets you decide whether the tests are in class or take home.
He is intresting but a very hard marker
Dr. Nicholls is clearly passionate about his studies. A word of caution: students planning on taking a "GPA Booster," class ought to look elsewhere.
Why did I ever take philosophy in the first place? It was a mistake. Why did I take phil with Nicholls? It was the WORST mistake of my life @Douglas. Honestly, he scared the crap out of me when he told me that he needed to talk to me. I never showed up for that private meeting tho, lol. I got the impression that to him he alone matters, noone else
Clearly knows his stuff, but is an incredibly arrogant guy. If you disagree with him, however respectfully, be prepared to be humiliated and treated like an idiot.
I am stunned at the criticism of Bob I've seen here. Almost to a point, the people bashing him for being unclear, having "gramatical/grammer" errors, and being mean can't express themselves remotely coherently. He's right to insult such people. Bob is by far the best professor I've had at Douglas.
Very smart man. Despite other comments I've seen here I have to say he is willing to give anyone the benefit of the doubt in arguments so long as they are able to support their opinions with proper evidences. He was very clear and understandable and always willing to answer questions.
Overall pretty good teacher. Helpful if you're willing to get help. Scares you at first, with some comments and such, but is a good teacher. Content is fairly reasonable. Good class to take if you need a transfer credit for PHIL
PRO: Gives you a practice exam the class before and the acutal exams. CON: 3 exams are worth 80% of the course, ignorant, makes you feel uncomfortable, thinks highly of his book that has been writing for 6 yrs, feels like you have to learn what he thinks and not phil
at first seemed like it was gonna be a rough year, and he seemed pretty harsh. the whole course was 2 in class tests, MC so if you read the books and the notes you'll Ace it. and 2 take home essay type tests. Helps you when you need it. Overall not too bad i'd take him again.
He let you come to his logic but he doesn't stop you getting away from his logic either. A lot of intense reading is required. His theory and personality is very intersting, if you really seek for moderate level philosophy you should check him out. I don't like him, but we became a friend. Oh! he is a big man!
PRO: Cheap textbook, he knows his stuff and I did actually learn. Sample test identical to real tests/exam. CON: Will embarrass you (I never asked questions for this reason), thinks his book is gods gift..its not its, extremely boring/repetitive, making it hard to read, but if you dont he will kick you out (our whole class -3 ppl got kicked out!)
Extremely difficult class, even with two prior Philosophy classes completed with a B+ and B, respectively. He is quite insightful, but very pedantic. His assignments are time consuming and difficult. Start them ASAP. Unless you have something thoughtful to say, then do not speak in class. That should apply to any post-secondary class though...
Can succeed if you attend all classes, read the course text thoroughly (highlighting and making lots of side notes) and do all of the assignments. He works you hard and seems initmidating but he's actually helpful and understanding, as long as you are putting in effort.
Just the best. Took 3 courses with him. Would take more if I were still at Douglas. My favorite prof ever.
Horrible, I dreaded his class! He does not foster an environment for learning; you better have the right answer or he will make an example of you and embarrass you. He is a difficult marker! He uses up a red pen on every paper...(a number of papers he refused to even mark)! Do NOT take him as a professor!!!
Bob's great! I learned a lot in his class. In addition to being an insightful prof, he makes hilarious remarks. :) Just pay attention when he's lecturing, read the texts, and you'll do well on tests. Essays are challenging but he gives detailed guidelines on what he wants. Basically, do what he requires of you, and you'll survive!
Really arrogant but somewhat interesting to listen to. Essays are HARD. You will have to work your butt off if you want to do well. Probably wouldn't recommend him but he does love his subject.
Hands down one of the best profs I have ever had. If you interact with him in an intelligent manner, you will get along great in his class. He doesn't take any crap, so follow his guidelines to the T (do the reading, format your essays properly). If you put the effort in, his courses will be the best you take in your post secondary career.
Lacks clarity in what is expected in assignments.
Tries to be intimidating but is actually a really nice guy! He really knows his stuff. Read his textbook before the lectures and it will be easier to understand! I admit, I did not like him at first but now I'd definitely take another class with him!
Loved him. Very interesting lectures. Would love to take his class again.
First and foremost, he has very difficult essays. Expect a terrible grade. The tests are significantly easier and you will be good as long as you payed attention in class or read the books. He will help you if you ask so dont be worried about that. If you want a high grade, take it with someone else. If you want to truly learn I, he is the best one
This class is for philosophy savvy people. If you don't know how to write a paper properly, and have no interest in phil, do not take his classes. Many people complain about his hard marking, but in reality it isn't his job to teach you how to write a decent paper. Great prof, funny, knows his stuff. If you're serious about phil, take his class!
MOST BORING CLASS YOU COULD EVER TAKE. I have never met someone so monotone and dull. AND A HARD MARKER. I have a 4.0 GPA, I am very good at writing essays, I'M PRETTY SURE HE EMPTIED AN ENTIRE RED PEN ALL OVER MY TERM PAPERS. I managed to get an A on one paper, but I was the only one, and it was HARD. Most didn't pass. Take someone else.
This was the worst class I've ever taken this far. He always talks about sex, and how we live in a world full of sophists and how we are uneducated and dumb. I don't feel comfortable asking him any questions and believe me in very outspoken. He's a very tough grader and his lectures are extremely boring. Only take his class if you're a phil lover.
Not as tough as people say. Not an "easy" marker, but you NEED to listen to his explicit instructions. He spells it out for you, literally. He is a bit arrogant but funny, and tries to help you succeed. Honestly, I put "decent" effort into my essays and still aced both of them. People who failed were lazy and expected to get A's for nothing.
Bob is a great teacher. He's passionate and engaging in lectures and discussions. He's fun and funny, but still serious. He's provocative and inspirational. I always look forward to his classes and I'd take them again anytime! He's the real deal! A true philosopher.
I found the lectures and the overall content extremely interesting, but Bob definitely did not make it enjoyable. The constant criticism on how incompetent all students are was emotionally draining. I lost a lot of confidence in myself with this class. Wouldn't recommend to a person who has never taken philosophy.
If you're not serious about philosophy, go somewhere else. Bob is one of the coolest legitimate philosophers around. He takes philosophy seriously, but he's funny and if you get to know him he's got a great sense of humor. His lectures feel like I'm listening to Socrates himself. He challenges you to actually learn and work hard. Bob is a true gem!
Bob as a fantastic lecturer if you are interested in continental philosophy. He expects students to be able to write at a certain caliber, which many will find difficult to meet. This is not a course, or prof., to be choosen by those who seek an easy A.
His lectures are interesting, but his criteria on the assignments and tests is ridiculously specific. He marks format more so than content. The amount of work required even for a less than mediocre grade in Bob's class is excessive, and for this reason I recommend that no one register for any of his courses unless they are serious about philosophy
This was definitely the worst and most boring class ive ever taken. All he does is talk the whole class and uses no technology at all, no powerpoints, not allowed to email him or call either. He uses the the white board and his writing is so messy you cant even read it or take notes. Very unclear and expects too much out of students.
Dont take this class unless you're deeply passionate about philosophy and are prepared to bust your ass for a mediocre grade. His lectures are interesting but his essays are hellish - he failed half the class's first papers. Be prepared for a lot of ranting about how vapid and egocentric young people are. Also don't ever be late for class!!
Bob is one of the best Phil profs around. He's a fantastic lecturer, very knowledgable on what he teaches, and is willing to help more than any other. Listen to Bob and you will learn not only philosophy, but how to write papers as well. Bob is NOT a teacher for complacent students. You need to work hard, be interested, and participate.
Amazing prof! No lip service to learning! The real deal. I've learned more from him than from all of my past professors combined! If you want to learn, he's your man!
Bob is one of the most influential humans in my life. Hes a modern day Socrates. Work hard & youll learn a lifetime worth of wisdom. If you get to know him, hes brilliant, funny, passionate, and caring. Bob is like an intellectual widwife hes cultivated my mind and drawn out my potential, leading me towards deep self-actualization and growth!
You can't, and certainly shouldn't, expect to get a good result out of mediocre effort. For some asinine reason the school system both pre and post secondary often seems to allow students to do this. That said, that won't stand with Bob. He gives you every little thing you need to succeed. If you listen, care and try you will not be let down.10/10
Bob is the best thing that can happen to any of you if you are truly willing to learn. He is fair and will give you everything you need to succeed; you will get the best feedback, environment, and knowledge possible. That being said, don't take him if you are not willing to open the books and to do the readings, don't waste your and his time.
Bob marks hard and will not tolerate anything but your best effort. I agree with that philosophy, but I think he takes it too far considering phil1101 is basically a simple grammar course. Seems like he would be a good prof for higher level courses, but avoid him if you arent serious about philosophy
Bob has been one of the most influential figures in my life. Im eternally grateful for the opportunity to have been one of his students. If youre committed to education, hell teach and transform your mind. Get to know him hes passionate, caring, funny, and extremely intelligent. Hes helped birth a new me. Truly legendary! Thank you, Bob.
Bob inspires past students and faculty alike. His knowledge of philosophy is incredible and Douglas is lucky to have him. Bob may seem tough at first, but is one of the best phil lecturers in BC. If you let him, he will show you how to write better than any undergrad at SFU, UBC, etc. A huge asset if you continue on in academia.
Found him intimidating and not approachable. Pretty sure he writes most of these positive reviews himself. I wouldn't recommend him as a prof or as a person even.
Bob marks hard and will not tolerate anything but your best effort. I agree with that philosophy, but I think he takes it too far considering phil1101 is basically a simple grammar course. Seems like he would be a good prof for higher level courses, but avoid him if you aren' serious about philosophy. Who even wants a phil degree lol - flip burgers
Just the worst professor ever - can't believe I am stuck in a class with him, why did I even take philosophy? Anyone with a degree ends up flipping burgers.
Do not take a class with him. Extreme superiority complex, rude, and unapproachable. Treats students like they are completely below him and expects first year students to be experts at philosophy.
Bob is the BEST prof around!! Do not listen to the naysayers! Extremely knowledgeable and puts an enormous amount of effort into the marking. Philosophy is the basis of all disciplines. Those who mock no nothing about it.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. He makes the class way harder than it should be! the lectures have nothing to do with the essays and he expects nothing but perfection. If any student gives him work even slightly different from what he wanted HE WILL FLAT OUT FAIL YOU... NOT LIKE A C- OR LIKE MAYBE A C! FLAT OUT FAIL. this class was not worth it.
Do not take any of his classes. They replaced him mid semester because he was so awful. In the midst of getting used to online classes, he would not allow students to allow questions. Very tough grader. He is very knowledgeable on the texts he assigns, but will not accept any other opinions other than his own.
Struggling in his class, I set up a meeting to ask for advice & support on how I can better understand his lessons. I expressed how my adhd & anxiety had been affecting my ability to focus and retain info. Smirking, he cut me off mid-convo to say "Stop there. When we use the term "like" in the wrong context, it makes us sound very unintelligent".
