very hard, but a great class. the book sucked.
Tests are mostly over lecture so do not get stuck trying to absorb the book.
Great Professor and Mentor Get to know him!
Great class, astronomy is boring but he makes jokes and makes it a little more enjoyable. Test are all lecture, which makes the test alot easier.
I thought he was a very tough teacher, on top of that the labs every thursday night sucked. dont take him.
Course itself not bad, a lot of numbers to remember in reference to the planets, but he tries to make it fun, and he really seems to enjoy what he does.Just pay attention mostly to the lecture, and scan the book.
very clear on material, nice
don't take the class with a lab if you can help it. Do the extra credit videos. I got over a 100% through most of the class. I really liked him too.
He's a good teacher and can make astronomy fun. Try to get a night lab if you can. The extra credit videos are boring but they're easy points and worth the time.
I had him for honors and although he's a funny man, I had trouble passing his tests. They seem predictable after the first one but there is always something you won't know and it will hurt terribly. I would not take this class if you want to keep a 4.0.
has tough tests, take him only if you'll take a lab the points will help your grade a lot. DO ALL EXTRA CREDIT VIDEOS. i got the same bad grade on a test that i studied for as the one i didn't study for. he's not funny.
I took the honors section, with a lab. It was one of the most enjoyable classes I had all. I thought he was pretty funny. Don't worry too much about the book, tests are mostly lecture.
The lecture material is great, but when it's delivered in his monotone voice some fell asleep. The tests were easy if you read the chapter summaries at the end of the chapters. He usually does a curve as well.
He offers a bunch of extra credit. If you do all of the extra credit, you could skip a test and still get an A.
I do not recommend this professor. If you take him, DO the extra credit. He has very specific questions on test, and vague lectures. I think his teaching style would fit better with an upper level course...NOT a general education course. If you can, take someone else.
the most boring class I have ever been in.
Dr. Patterson is one of the worst teachers I have ever had, not to metion the most absolutely bland and monotonous people I have ever met. His tests difficult to the point of ridiculousness and he presents too much material at once.
Not too bad of a teacher, especially considering the material being taught. He's nerdy, which can be funny. The tests aren't bad at all as long as you study the notes.
It's a tough class. He's a funny guy and sounds a lot like Ben Stein, but he covers way too much material way too quickly. That makes it kind of hard to do well on his tests, which are tricky.
Very boring class. Fairly easy though if you show up and take his notes. I nothing but "C's and "D"s on his tests and still got a "B" in the class because of all the extra credit. Better than having to take Chemistry or Biology for General education
This subject sucks but he does his best and offers tons of extra credit. I was borderline and he passed me.
this was harder than bms 135, more time consuming than any other class. i studied about 9 hours for each test and barely got a c. he finishes the whole book in one semester. his tests include notes and book so you have to know both perfectly. he's nice. extra credit may help a little, but not much
Nice Guy. He really loves Astronomy. (But I cant say I feel the same way) I found the subject boring. You take pages of notes every day. Do the extra credit videos.
I thought this class was very easy. I don't get people who think it is tough. Take the notes, memorize the notes, take the quizzes and tests. It is all there. This is college, not grade school. I thought the class was dull, but awesome material.
avoid this class at all cost. his lectures make no sense and he gives tons of pages of notes. his tests are hard-don't blow them off.
He seems kind of mean and stuck up. Tests aren't to bad if you study your notes from class. Extra credit available. Lectures are very boring. He tends to cram a bunch of info in on the day before a test. Lots of notes
No Comments
Lectures are boring, but he is very into the subject. He offers extra credit which is nice. He never covers very much of the last chapter before a test because we run out of time. So you will always have to teach yourself that last chapter before the test. Tests aren't extremely difficult.
If you are thinking is a blow-off class to finish off your GenEds, think again. Tough class for sure. Seems more like a class for beginning astronomy majors, not just for a bunch of kids taking it for GenEd. Extra credit, helps a bit... tests are hard, even when you study. BORING AS ALL HECK
you don't really have to read the book - just study the notes he gives you. the class is only interesting for the last month or so. he tries really hard and tends to pepper his lectures with star wars jokes. he's a nice guy and there's plenty of extra credit.
Great Professor, he likes to make corny jokes but is normally to the point. He knows his material very well and is very clear in his delivery. I would suggest him to anyone. It is an EASY class.
He looks like Mr. Rogers and also acts like him. Dont take before 11 am or you will fall asleep. Tests are hard and there are about 15 pages of notes in between each test. The test are combined notes and book. A lot of reading!
Tests are hard, I studied the notes, but still managed to get Cs and Ds on the tests...I'm not very good at science so this was a bad subject for me :(
This was my hardest class by far and I think the class average of 115 students was a 'c' with few getting a's. I managed to pull off an 'a' but it took many hours of studying to do so. class is boring, just lecture and taking about 70 pages of notes.
Wow......he was really hard. I Got an "A" in Financial and Managerial, and barely got a "C" in his class. I studied atleast 6 hrs per week outside of class for that crappy grade. Beware if you're not an accounting major!
class is pretty cool, lectures are long and boring. tests are pretty hard but quizes help. Patterson is really kinda funny, i enjoy this class.
I had him for AST lab. He does a little explaining then lets you start---whether you know what you're doing or not. If you ask him a simple question, he looks at you like you're stupid, talks for a while and doesn't even answer the question fully. If you can, find another professor. If not, you can still pass just fine. Not a very hard class.
I agree with whoever said he's just like Ben Stein. He's funny, but his class is so boring. You can tell it's really what he's interested in though. READ THE BOOK! And study like all heck, or else you WILL fail. The tests really really really suck.
This guy really know his stuff... which makes his class hard because he gives you a ton of information. Good news is, he offers a lot of extra credit. Tests are multiple choice, weekly quizzes are written. If you like the subject, you'll like the class. If you don't have any previous interest, be ready to study.
All you do is copy notes everyday but if you listen, he usually draws out and explains the concepts. You have quizzes every thursday which are reasonably important to your grade. The tests are Scantron but pretty tough.
Hard class. Quizzes every friday. Tests mainly over notes, and he does take attendance. His lectures can be boring, but he has an interesting personality, and can be quite funny sometimes. my adivce: dont take this class if you can avoid it.
HARD CLASS! I was very intersted in the material when i signed up for the class, not so much after the first test. Take good notes- he told me the notes are basically a study guide (a long one at that). Go on fridays for the quizzes, and do the extra credit! You WILL need it. Smart teacher though. He really knows his stuff.
If you have a laptop, BRING IT. If you don't, you will be writing the entire class period. That, and you can play solitaire during the lecture...
Very boring class!! Hard to stay awake! Kinda sounds like Ben Stein. Quizzes last day of class each week. Tests are hard. Take good notes and study them well!!
I did not read the book at all. His notes are clear and it is easiest if you bring your laptop to class as he sometimes goes very quickly. He sounds like Ben Stein and makes some not-so-funny jokes sometimes but other than that he is fine.
Expect to learn a new (wrong) scientific notation and be counted off for being too specific in you answers. Quizzes every Friday, usually coherent, but sometimes he doesn't know how to phrase questions. But he'll still count you off for not understanding what he meant. No study guides. Take notes, or try. His voice puts you to sleep.
I never used the textbook. The more I read it the more confused I got. He goes way too fast when taking notes and it just seems like there is way too much to cover. He doesnt use BlackBoard, and when I ask for an update on my grade through email he would never give it--wants you to make a meeting instead like we have time for that. Quizzes suck
he is funny and is not a bad teacher.. you wont need the book just study his notes and you should at least get a B but he does tend to pull some random questions from the book but its not worth your time to read it
AWESOME TEACHER...MADE LECTURES FUN TO ATTEND
This guy is a master! I had very little interest in astronomy when I signed up, but his enthusiasm for the subject is contagious. Super funny, if you can catch his dry style. A geek in the best sense possible. I love this professor!!
I took it during summer, He gave typed notes (33 for first test)didn't help with what to study, had to memorise ALL of it. Dry and boring Prof. Hard test. IF YOU CAN TAKE A DIFF CLASS/PROF DO IT. The people that scored him high are over intell nerds, so, if you are like them you'll do good, if not, GOOD LUCK
very monotone
This doesn't seem like a difficult class at first, but it is! I didn't use the book much, read the first few chapters and it confused me. He wants you to know all of the material he types up. Doesn't give review sheets and gives quizzes on the last day of the class, but only 5 points each.
This is class is fairly easy if you: don't expect it to be a blow off class (ast. is a hard science just like chem and bio); take notes; read the book. He practically begs his students to come and ask for help during office hours. Just do as he tells you and you can't get less than a B.
I am not a science person at all and I got a B in this course. I never read the book, but I took good notes. He gives the class extra credit assignments at the beg. of the year and one is due about every other week. They are only worth 3 pts. but they brought me up 11% points so due them! He is kinda monotone, but he is funny and silly! IamNotaNerd
Dr. Patterson knows what he's talking about. While he is monotoned and his lectures go quick, just make sure you write down what he's saying or what he's showing you because that IS what will be on the test. i never read the book and got a B. if you feel like slacking off attendance wise, not a good decision.
I really liked this class. Although he's a little dry, if you know everything on the screen during lectures you will get an A on the test, easy. Offers a ton of extra credit(to make up for the actual pop quizzes that will catch you off guard if you don't study everynight). I really learned a ton in this class.
Best class that I've ever taken! Patterson so made the class...funny man! He's greate.
He truly has a passion for astronomy and sometimes goes into too much detail. The tests are really hard but if you go over your notes (which you have to write yourself while he talks which sucks) you will do fine. He does give some extra credit and attendance points which could help your grade a little. He also had weekly quizzes that are easy.
He's very knowledgeable and passionate about astronomy. It's easy to fall asleep because his voice is very soothing. The tests were relatively easy because they were taken almost exactly from the notes. I took the honors section, and it was kind of difficult just because some of it is really in-depth. Definitely go to class because of the notes.
Patterson is a great teacher that uses some humor throughout his lecture. His tests are right from the notes so take them and go to class. he give weekly quizzes which are easy and act as a grade cushion. Some said this class was hard but I had little prior knowledge and I felt it was a breeze with a little studying.
He's a fun guy to be around & his lectures are enjoyable, but you never quite know what to study for his tests. Although no one received less than a C on any of them. There is a 3500 word reasearch paper that you have to do that takes a lot of filler, but he's pretty generous about grading as long as you followed his parameters. Easy HW given daily
I, along with many others in my class, thought this class was extremely difficult. You take lecture notes the whole time. I studied at least 4 hours for each test got B's and C's on them all. The quizzes are pretty easy and a lot are take-home. Do all the extra credit to cushion your grade. I'm glad this class is over with. Never used the book.
Dr. Patterson makes lectures enjoyable. His little jokes are sometimes (almost always) pretty lame, but regardless, they always got a laugh out of me. He gives out reading assignments for every chapter, but he tests over lecture only. Stay on top of the extra credit and take good notes and you'll be fine.
I thought this class we pretty easy. Tests are all multiple choice and come straight from the notes. Also, there are a ton of extra credit opportunities.
I found him very dull. It was hard to pay attention in lectures. Everyone thought they did well on the tests, but then a lot of us didn't do that good. It was tough to know what to study for the tests. Thank god for the extra padding given by the extra credit. It was really hard to get through and I am so glad I am done with this class.
I thought this would be an good class for the required lab science course. Parts of the class were interesting, but it was much more in depth and harder than I thought it would be. I always get A's and I got a C in the class. His lectures can be interesting, but there is a lot of material on each test and it is hard to know what to study.
His lectures are easy to follow along with and his notes are clearly written. The tests can be difficult (make sure to memorize the exact numbers for properties given) but he gives a ton of opportunities for extra credit.
He is very enthusiastic about this class, gives tons of extra credit. But you need to go to class because he will give random quizzes. I thought this class would be a lot easier than it was.
Very enthusiastic professor, but he has a tendency to ramble and not get through everything so he rushes through the end of the chapter. But if you just show up to class and take good notes, you'll be fine. He has quizzes about once a week which can make or break your grade, so attendance might as well be mandatory. Lots of extra credit. Got an A.
There was no extra work, all you had were pop quizzes and tests. He went over a lot of information in short amount of times. He is just overall not the best professor.
He grades labs pretty hard, and quizzes pretty easy. Be very consciencious of spelling and grammar when you write your term paper - he counts off a lot for that. He's pretty dry - but do your best to pay attention in lecture. Also, you don't really need to read the book at all, ever.
Patterson is an overall good teacher. He barely uses the text book at all for quizes or tests. But it does help to read it before class to know what in the world he is talking about. Quizzes are almost every other class period just over the notes so ALWAYS study your notes. Not bad for science nobody should get below a C+. I had an A-
I loved Patterson. My favorite professor of this semester. If you go to class you should get an A. Quizzes about every other class, at least 1 a week, tests are straight from the notes but reading the book could be helpful. But he gives SO MUCH extra credit opportunities it's hard to do bad. Higly recommend this teacher I had over a 100% at times.
If you attend his class or you have friends that attend the class, all you have to do is type notes from his powerpoints and pass the tests. Very little reading is required and the reading that is required is only used for further understanding of his notes. I loved him as a professor - wore elbow pads and probably smokes a pipe.
I found this class to be difficult, especially because it was not quite what I was expecting. He went to in-depth with stuff and gives out WAY too many notes! That made it hard to study for tests. He does offer a lot of EC opportunities, but I never had the time to do them. I'm a straight A kid and made a C+. For gen ed, take something else.
I will never take a class with him ever again. He was dull and gave out WAY too much information with no study guide for tests. His little quizzes are supposed to help your grade, but they dont. He gives opportunities for extra credit, but I really did not have time. Overall I didn't have a good experience with him. He thinks he's clever, but not
Took it as a gen ed. Patterson tries to be cool (makes nerd culture refs). Pretty nice. Never used my textbook-tests were 80-90% lecture-based, some harder than they had to be. Had our class spend a lot of time on a pointless project based on a doomsday movie from Discovery. Didn't get to go to Baker Observatory for night lab. No e.c. given.
Patterson was a very knowledgeable professor, but taught at a level that was above 90% of the class. Tests were hard because there were no study guide. The material was very dense and you were expected to be an expert on it. I did not learn a whole lot from this class and was very disappointed.
I HATED this class. Lectures were boring, tests were hard, and subject was WAY too in depth for a gen ed. Only take if you have an interest in the subject.
Dr. Patterson is a nice man, but a very difficult professor. This class was too in-depth for a gen ed, and there was no study guide or any other kind of help preparing for tests. I'm a junior and this class was the first time I've gotten a C.
Absolutely hated this class. Never take it. Professor seems knowledgeable but gives out way too much information for a 100- level class. If anybody tells you that they enjoy this class, then they're LYING to you... and most likely to themselves. Horrid.
Prof lectured in a dull monotone the whole time. He insisted we read the book then took 99% of his test questions from his notes/lectures; which he zoomed through at an astronomical pace leaving most of us with hand-cramps and confusion. He really needs to get on board with using Black Board so we can actually follow along with his lectures. D-
Patterson's teaching method is very old-school: he presents materials on PowerPoints and explains the main points on it. Basically, this is a science class where the main job is regurgitating info on a multiple choice test, while taking a lab that requires the barest amount of effort. I would recommend taking him only if you have a strong interest.
Patterson is awesome. Everything you need to pass the tests is in the lecture, not the book, I don't even read it. He offers a lot of extra credit too, all you have to do is watch Cosmos and write a quick paper. He's really corny funny, kind of like an old version of Sheldon Cooper from the Big Bang Theory.
Pretty chill. Attendance isn't required, but he usually gives a quiz on Fridays. Only four tests for the whole semester, no final. No homework at all. A pretty easy class, if you take notes and study. He's a nice, quirky, old guy with really corny jokes.
If you miss something, you're welcome to stay after for a few minutes to go back and look through his lecture. Reading isn't necessary, but will help you better understand. Tests are based off his lectures. Making notecards from main pts of lecturesnotes help. Also, sit towards the front of the class to better hear him.
Does not help students at all. Never gives clear answers. Lectures are long and dull and cover little of what's on the test.
Dr. Patterson is a nice old man who loves Astronomy! He would love to help you with anything or just sit and discuss with you! He gives you all the information you will need to pass the class and will pique your interest in Astronomy.
The tests, which comprise the majority of your grade, are an obscene amount of absurdly specific facts with little overarching concept. Patterson does not use or update blackboard. The classes are entirely dull lectures and he offers little extra credit. I'm an A student; it's the hardest class I've ever taken. If you decide to take, lab helps.
Not very tech saavy. Doesn't use blackboard so you don't really know your grade for certain. 4 big tests and some extra credit, that's it.
Patterson is a nice old man. He tries to make his lectures are understanding as he can. The tests are hard. If you miss class it's almost impossible to get a good grade. Tests kinda go over the notes but you should read the book as well. Its forsure a class you need to study, read and understand if you want to do well.
Do not take this class unless it's essential to your major. One of the most difficult classes that I have taken especially considering that it is a ged ed. The tests are extremely difficult and you must pay attention to fine details of lecture to pass.
So I'm a bit of an astronomy nerd, so maybe that's why the class felt so easy. I showed up, took notes, and studied them for 30 minutes before every test. This got me a 99.6 percent in the class. Everything on the test is covered in the lectures, to take good notes, DO NOT WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN. Fascinating subject, pay attention!
He went way too fast in class and skipped over a lot of the material. He would give weekly quizzes but would never explain tests or quizzes. I would NEVER take a class by him again.
Friday is usually quiz day, I didn't read the book and you can see my grade from that. Test days were death days. Sit close so you can hear and be able to stay awake, he's almost 80 for goodness sakes. Made it interesting though, not that hard to do with astronomy.
He isn't a very good teacher. I didn't learn a thing in the class.
I ended up dropping this class because I was failing and there was no chance for me to succeed. Patterson insists on students reading the textbook, but the tests he makes are just a hodgepodge of trivial questions that aren't from the lectures or the book. I had a tough time staying focused as he's probably 85 and speaks in a monotone voice.
Patterson did his best to keep the students entertained. Some of the information from his lectures was pretty interesting, but seemed to drag on. The book is not mandatory to pass the course, but it can help give a boost. "Pop quizzes" were given every single Thursday. Show up to class, take notes, study the notes and you'll pass.
Dr. Patterson is passionate about what he is teaching , however, astronomy has a lot of dense material and I wouldn't recommend taking it unless it truly interests you. He gives quizzes fairly often which is nice because the tests are mostly a hodgepodge of questions that are rarely covered in class. Take a different science class if possible.
He doesn't give study guides and that is the biggest downfall of the class. He's funny, nice, and loves what he teaches. The tests are based almost entirely on lectures.
Dr. Patterson is very nice and can be humorous quite often but is very quiet and soft spoken so it's easy to get bored and not pay attention to lecture. Quiz every Friday in his class and hour long lecture everyday is the norm for this class. 4 tests are taken all semester and the final is just the final chapters test. Study and you'll pass easily.
DO NOT TAKE This class has been extremely painful to sit through and painful to try to get a decent grade in: 1)You can BARELY hear him. He is SO old and talks SO quietly and is monotone. 2) He refuses to post any notes or study material on Blackboard. 3) The ONLY thing you can study from is notes you take in class, so you HAVE to go to class.
Hardest class I've taken, test/pop-quiz based, but has E.C. Didn't really need the book, tests were 99% lecture material. GO TO CLASS TO TAKE NOTES - IT'S VITAL! Very knowledgable & nice w/ corny jokes. However, not great at explaining such a tough subject. Lab made subject engaging/easier to understand. Consider another science class if possible.
Overall, the course itself was tough, but Patterson did make it tolerable. Short quizzes are usually once every week with 4 exams that are all based on lecture notes. The biggest con is that the notes aren't available online so if you miss a class you'll have to get them from someone. Pretty good teacher, just very lecture heavy
He gives at least one pop quiz per week based on the lecture notes. There is also plenty of opportunity for easy extra credit. It is a very lecture heavy class, take good notes because this is what he uses to make the tests.
Very monotone and boring. Long, heavy lectures that are not explained well and gives no study guides. I did all the extra credit and still did not have a decent grade.
4 multiple choice/scantron tests that consist ONLY of content from lecture notes. The notes are not posted online, he does not give you study guides, and you don't even get your quizzes back to use as study material. Now none of this is too bad, just show up, take notes, and study hard-right? WRONG. The tests are at best 50% lecture material.
He sounds like he's asleep when he talks. Very hard to pay attention to, but all of the homework answers are in the back of the book, so theres an easy grade. Lost my love of astronomy from his class.
Professor Patterson is a nice old man but he is VERY hard to learn from. If you don't show up for class, you will fail. His lectures can get pretty boring because he has a very monotone voice. He has 4 tests throughout the course and those pretty much define your grade. He also has pop quizzes about once every week based on lecture. HARD CLASS!!!
Dr Patterson is a really nice guy and he tries to make jokes during lectures to make them more entertaining. However, hes very quiet and hard to hear. The tests are lecture based. DO NOT buy the textbook, it was a waste of $100.
Patterson is funny and understanding, doesn't take attendance and offers plenty of extra credit. Lectures can get boring/repetitive pretty quick, it's all notes (that are NOT posted anywhere if you miss class, so get a friend that will share with you) and some pop quizzes. Tests can be rough if you don't do the reading, so stay on top of it.
DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK!!! There are 4 tests throughout the semester that are based almost entirely on his lecture although some material on the test aren't from the book or the lecture you just gotta know it. There is also a pop quiz about every week which is usually 5 questions. Just lectures the entire class with a few jokes thrown in. Boring.
This is an entry level class that is taken as a gen. ed. and he teaches it like we all care so much about astronomy and will change our majors to it. He really does not know how to simplify things to make it easier to understand for the non-science people.
Dr. Patterson is the worst professor I have ever had. His lectures are power points which he does not post online. If you miss a class you miss the notes. His tests are based on his lectures (which are impossible to understand). He is mono-toned and does not care about the students what so ever. I beg you, do NOT take any of his classes.
Professor Patterson was hands down the worst professor i've taken in my three years of college. Ridiculously hard course for a general education requirement. Posts no notes, study guides, or study materials online. All notes are done in class and if you miss class, you miss the notes. Please do yourself a favor and never take this joke of a teacher
Very simple class. Just take notes in the lecture. When you go over the quizzes after you take them I suggest you jot down the questions and answers. Lots of opportunities for extra credit.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. He is so monotone and quiet. Yet, make sure you listen, because he does pop quizzes and doesn't post his notes online. Do not miss class unless you would rather not pass the class. Also, his tests are so hard that the average for the first test was 60%. Please help yourself and do not take this teacher.
Avoid this professor at all costs! His lectures are boring. He doesn't post notes or give study guides, and lectures from a long, boring word document. He doesn't understand that this is a GenEd class and people don't care about astronomy this much. He doesn't know how to teach only what we need. The tests are too hard. Our class average was 70%!
I can't lie, I didn't put a ton of effort in, Astronomy is boring af and Patterson definitely doesn't make it exciting. The EC is nice though because quizzes can be difficult. He doesn't send notes out so take quality ones, the book is only somewhat helpful.
This class is stupid hard for a 100 level. Tests are EXCLUSIVELY lecture, and deceivingly hard for multiple choice. Not just his presentation, but side comments/information he makes in class were on some tests. class average for test was never above 75, he doesn't give any sort of curve.
All of the tests are based on the lectures. Every class period he lectures and is very monotonous, boring, and quiet. The slides are not posted online, and a lot of times he scrolls too fast that we did not have time to get everything. There are pop quizzes, so that is another reason to go to class. This class is poorly organized and disappointing.
Dr. Patterson is a really nice professor and he really cares about the students success. He has some good humor but otherwise his lectures are slow. Tests are a little hard but other than that an A is achievable.
