He is a great professor. He is always in his office and willing to see students. His lectures are clear and help for the test but make sure you read the test carefully because he words questions in a weird way. The curve and extra credit help alot though.
As a professor he is a very helpful and accessible teacher. He is also interested in the subject. But I do not understand how he came to distribution of the curve in his class. It doesn't make any sense.
Very helpful, interested in subject, great guy to get to know... Though this is a higher level course and very challenging, I wouldn't recommend these courses unless you've taken bios 272, and a course that discusses cell biology...
Malchow is a good professor. He covers a lot of material in this course, so you really have to study your notes and read the book to make sure you've got everything. He's approachable for help if you need it, but usually, your lab TA's can help.
the class if very boring, but it mite be easy if you like memorizing his slides...the exams are exactly from the slides..so you're not really learning anything..but then if u're just looking for a blow off class to take...id say enjoy yourself!
He is the best bio professor at UIC his exams come straight from the notes. His exams can be tricky but if you study the power point slides youll do fine. Extra credit and curve helps. Also hes the only professor ive ever had that does not get angry when students come to his office
Is a pretty good teacher.
Good teacher. Test are straight forward from the slides. Never opened my book.
Really good lecturer but tests too hard and essays you have to label everything
He was a good professor, he seems like a nice guy, his test was hard :), the one i failed and am gonna drop!!
Nice guy, powerpoints. tricky tests! study hard and you'll be fine. way better than Kelso! But Muller is better than both of them. We had all three teachers Spring 2008 and it was pretty horrible.
I liked him alot. he is fun, easy. Study the powerpoint and read the book, then you will be FINE
Malchow was a phenomenal professor. He was always readily available and willing to help during office hours or come in at another time. His tests are based on some book material, but mostly powerpoints, clicker questions, and those questions at the end of each chapter. He also lets you drop the lowest test grade, and his final is 60% old tests.
The tests were extremely hard. I never did well on any of them, even with studying. Labs are fairly easy and will boost your grade. He is a real nice professor and really cares to provide the best possible explanations, but the material is complex.
He's very kind and tries to help students understand better. I suggest reading the book and understanding the material rather than memorizing the slides. His exams are off of slides but mostly from book and your knowledge of whether you understand the material or not. GOOD LUCK.
Great guy, good lecturer, tests are still difficult but he is willing to help you!
Very nice and fun guy! He is always willing to help. We covered fluorescent proteins on Halloween and he dressed up as a jellyfish. His exams are tough but his lectures cover all the material. The end of the chapter multiple choice questions are very helpful when studying for exams...he uses some of them on the exam.
He is a very great teacher. Always willing to answer questions during, before, and after class. Tests are a little tricky but not impossible.
Malchow is a good professor. He wants to make sure you understand the material and come to class. You do not have to read the book but study the powerpoints for the exams. About 1/4 of the questions are from old exams. Use mastering biology from Malchow or a friend, as many questions are from there as well. Go to lab & you will do fine!
Malchow is a Great professor. I didn't know i was so interested in Bio until i took this class. He explains everything very good with nice examples. He also drops the lowest test, lab, and discussion grade. The tests are pretty difficult, but if you understand the material and crack open the book sometimes you'll do fine.
Malchow is the best professor I've had so far. He is very clear, keeps the lectures interesting and is always willing to help. He goes through everything thoroughly and slowly so you don't feel like you're getting lost. I wish he taught 101 too! His tests are pretty much the lecture notes and not that bad if you skim the text too. A+ Professor! :)
Professor teaches with slides. Either coming to class or looking at them online is very important for the exams. As well as the online supplement to the book. Questions straight from there. The exams are hard though. Lots of studying required for them. Professor is extremely kind. He is ready to help an student at any time.
He's an awesome teacher! He's very clear and actually wants you to learn. Be careful on the fourth test though. It's way harder than the others.
i took this class during summer and it went by soo fast. hes big on graphs so know them in and out by heart along with anything related to numbers. hes very helpful if u need to ask ?s the material is pretty hard if u havent taken many bios classes at UIC
Great professor. Tests aren't bad if you look at lecture slides and masteringbiology. No curve but lowest test, lab, and discussion gets dropped. Wish he taught BIO101!
Professor Malchow is the best Biology professor that I have ever had. Although his tests were somewhat challenging, be sure to do Mastering Biology and go over his lecture notes, and you can obtain a good grade in this class. Malchow makes Biology somewhat fun to learn and he makes sure his students understand what he is talking about.
nice guy, never really paid attention in lecture or read the book but listened to lectures ob bb come exam time and ended up with a B. try a little harder and an A is easy to get. exams are based heavily on lecture, mastering bio, and previous exams. class wasn't too hard, i recommend him.
It's an easy class, but somehow, i found the exams are really difficult and tricky. The average for every exams were like Ds and Cs. Malchow is definitely a great professor, you should take him. He's very caring and always there to answer your questions. Labs are extremely easy, lab grades will boost your final grade!
I learned the information that he presented. The ickicker was fun. His test are a little challenging but not impossible. I ended up with a B, but if I had really applied my self, I would have gotten an A. Personally, he is very nice and really wants to help.
Best bio professor i have ever had!! Makes material clear and has real examples. Very nice and loves biology!
Malchow has a gift to teach. UIC is really lucky to have a professor of his quality. He has one goal: to help kids learn biology, and he'll do whatever it takes to get you to understand the material. Best professor I've had at UIC. By far.
Very good lecturer. Exams were difficult though. TA was helpful to an extent. Overall class was okay. Got a B but if i really tried, probably couldve gotten an A. But he really cares about the students. He tries to help us improve our grades any way he can.
One of the best. I got a B but it's possible to get an A if you study and work hard (I didn't so it's my fault). Very helpful and nice professor. He even dressed as zombie for Halloween. Always has a smile on his face. You have to pay attention in class b/c his slides are mostly diagrams. (Malchow or Muller? I preferred Malchow)
I personally didn't find his lectures that helpful. But I appreciate that he tried to get everyone involved during class. Mostly studied on my own by reading the book and did masteringbiology. Exams are easy. Overall the class is straightforward. As long as you know what you're doing there should be no problem getting an A.
To many people he was a great lecturer but he was not that great. He was so boring which made the material difficult to understand. Not the best professor for this class. Muller gave a better lecture the 2 weeks we had him. So if you can take him.
The labs are easy. Barely any homework at all. Lectures really don't help much though so you either have to read it on your own or ask for serious help. The tests killed my grade every single time so I don't suggest this class unless you're a science major and actually like this stuff.
People told me this class was an "easy" B. LIES. You need to study for a B, and a lot more for an A. While a B is easily doable, this class didn't feel like a 100 level class. So much material was taught. Malchow is awesome tho, great guy and good professor. Labs are very easy. Final is just questions from past exams. Lastly, every point counts.
Malchow exams are piece of cake if you thouroughly do the MasteringBiology homeworks. And if you didn't, just paying attention to his classes and taking notes it's enough. He gives a review lecture before each mid-term and he'll answer questions posted by students on Blackboard. And he is so passionate about his course!
He's an amazing professor! His passion about biology made me love what he taught and kept my interest. Lots of material to learn though so not an easy A class unless you really study and learn the material. I recommend him though; he was the best!
THE BEST PROFFESOR AT UIC. IF U HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TAKE HIM!
I don't understand why he got such amazing ratings. He's just an OK teacher. I've had better biology teachers than him before. Although he explains things, takes questions for exams from masteringbio, his exams are still tricky. His slides are vague and from the book. Hw and labs are easy, but you need to focus on exams and pay attention in class.
He is an excellent teacher. He knows how to make the content easier and how to keep the attention of students in lecture. Funny guy.
He is a great professor. He makes biology seem interesting because he really enjoys what he teaches. The work in the class are online Masteringbio questions, labs (pre and post), and questions on weekly articles. His exams come from masteringbiology and previous sample exams mainly, but understand the concepts. Pay attention during lecture!
Not *as* great as everyone says, but still very good. He genuinely enjoys teaching; consequentially he gives engaging lectures and is more than willing to answer questions. However, attendance is VERY important because his slides are quite vague and tests quite hard. Definitely recommend him, but don't think that his niceness means it'll be easy.
Extremely enthusiastic and genuinely kind. Clearly wants all of his student to succeed. The only negative would be that he assigns quite a bit of "busy work". Prelabs, postlabs, article discussions, and projects all seemed like a waste of time. His multiple choice tests were EXTREMELY easy; not sure why anyone thought they were tough.
great professor!!!!!!! knew his stuff and knew how to keep you interested. highly recommend taking him.
Amazing! He knows how to teach. he tries very hard for his students to understand the concept. he knows how to keep the class interesting. He's very sweet also. Highly recommend. awesome professor!
he's so sweet! he knows how to teach, a lot of fun when he shows examples. he knows how to keep the class focused. he is by far the best professor i have had.highly recommend!
He's is my favorite professor so far. I love how he is passionate. I think he is a good lecturer. You gotta work to get a good grade. Love love him.
I really think Dr.Malchow is one of a few good professors that actually takes the time to explain the concepts that you dont know. He talks slow in lecture so its easier to follow. If you go to his office hours its really effective that way you will be able to understand the material enough. This guy is better than muller. Both are good though.
He's a very good professor.Very passionate about biology and is extremely nice to students. However, class was a lot of work.Tests weren't hard but required a LOT of reading/preparation.
Amazing Professor, take him in any class he teaches. He knows how to teach, he's funny, and very clear. One of the best teachers I have ever had at UIC.
He was an excellent lecturer for this class and is very organized. He even told us what things to study so that we would know what types of questions he'd put on the exams. The questions he chose were moderately difficult. Overall, I definitely recommend him as a professor.
Nice guy
The best professor I have ever had and the best for bios at UIC! Extremely clear teaching and exams completely fair. If you show up to class, which is the point, and look over his materials and read there is no way you won't get an A.
Professor Malchow is a great lecturer. There are 4 exams plus a final. The exams are pretty difficult. The discussions and labs require a lot of work. Make sure you attend lecture as the iClicker is used daily to track attendance. Just make sure you listen, go over previous exams, and do your MasteringBio homework, and you should be fine.
Awesome instructor! His lectures were very clear and easy to understand, everything was posted on BB. The course is intense for a 100 level, but very interesting. He was always willing to help students and encouraged us to seek help if needed.
good proessor, exams are hard. book is not needed, if u take good notes during lecture. Attend class, there are iclicker points, which are great since he does not curve anything!! =/. Labs and discussions are easy
He is the BEST bio professor!try to get full points on labs discussion, clicker& mast bio.Every single points count trust me!dont depend on final exam.try ur best to do well on exams.exams are easy if u have clear concept of the material.if not, visit him on his office.he is VERY helpful.I hate bio before, but this class made me love it.Easy B clas
He is very nice and cooperative. if u dont understand the material, visit him in his office. it will definitely help u alot. try to get as many points as u can, coz it will make a huge difference at the end. by taking this class, i m sure i will do well on bio section of MCAT. TAs are verrry slow in updating grade this is the only thing i didnt lik
Very helpful and you gotta study well for his tests.
I came in with AP bio credit and people told me he was great for BIOS 100. I would say that he's a good bio teacher, but not AS good as everyone says. He's very helpful, has good sense of humor, knows HOW TO TEACH, etc. Test questions were difficult, but you'll survive. Know your graphs, he loves putting those on exams.
He is a very good lecturer. Keeps you awake and tells personal stories/jokes.Teaches the animal portion which is easier than plant portion of BIOS240, but he does try to trick you with his graph-type questions.DO NOT just memorize the graphs.Actually have to understand them and what happens when a variable is changed, etc.Study hard, you'll be fine.
OK. class. class doesnt seem like 100 level. too much work load. labs are tedious and time consuming. each lab requires extensive reading of chap, graphs and is worth a lot of points. try to get full points in labs, quizes,&other lab stuff. heads up! set aside more than two hours for each lab homework. practice all old exams to be prepared for exam
Best proffessor in any course ever, especially biology. The class has alot of work load but he makes everything interesting. Before exams listen to his lecture captures and practice old exams. Got an A in the class.
Malchow is such a great professor, really helps you understand the material, and gives excellent lectures. Tests are not too easy, not too hard.
Malchow is as good a professor as you'll ever see. He really truly wants students to learn and succeed. Tests are fair and he gives you more than enough help to do well in the class. Best teacher ever
not AS good as everyone here is raving about. He's definitely a much more enthusiastic and passionate professor than most my professors, and the way he presents the material is "fun" but this class is a bit challenging, albeit not as challenging as KN 251.
Very very very nice professor. He is really passionate about his topic and tries helping students out a lot. You can get a bit lost at times and reading the book will help.
He is awesome. SO much work I thought. But it helps learn the material. Reading the book helps but listening to the lectures online and doing the guides help more. Manage your time wisely so that you do ALL assignments which WILL help on exams! Study the previous exams as well.
This was the toughest course I've ever taken in terms of bio courses. When you take the 4 week option over the summer, it's even tougher because daily assignments are very time consuming and difficult to understand. He is good at teaching, but even with studying, exams were a horrible experience. I've so glad I'm over with it.
Dr. Malchow is an awesome professor because he wants you to be engaged. He provides plenty of iclicker points, encourages questions, and does fun little demonstrations. This is a difficult class, though, due to the huge amount of material. Make his powerpoints into notecards, read the book, go to his office hours, and study old exams.
This class is pretty difficult (I took the four week summer session). Very heavy on material. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Get to know Dr. Malchow, he is an awesome guy and extremely helpful. Very passionate about the topic, so he makes you WANT to learn it.
Dr. Malchow is just a really nice guy in general in addition to how great of a professor he is. He is really willing to take the extra time to help students. Take good notes, do the Mastering Bio, go to class, and study the old exams! That's how I earned my A!
Let say this is a class you go to to fall asleep in because everything he teaches is so useless. Study old exams and homework and you'll pass. The powerpoints are one useless thing. The cons is that he now have a new policy where there's a class retake on exam during discussion and averaging it out with what you had initially.
This class was not fun. The 500 person class goes down to 300 people for a reason. He's nice, but this was not fun.
Great guy, helpful (altho there's not much to ask imo). Facts r facts,u learn them in this class throo watching lecture capture, attending class if you like (I didn't find it helpful), and doing old exams. His tests are tricky (some ez Qs tho), and lab & discussion are annoyingly time-consuming. Got an A. EVERY POINT COUNTS. 3/5 class, disliked it
biology is obviously not easy, but he makes it so interesting. his power points actually are very helpful in understanding things because of the way he constructs them. not to mention he's one of the nicest people ever. funny too. very much recommended.
Malchow is great. He is a good lecturer and a really nice guy. His exams are pretty easy, all multiple choice. I really enjoyed this class and it's very easy to get an A if you put the effort in.
Taking this class in the summer...lecture capture is a must. You have to watch lectures at least more than once to get this material down. Super nice professor but material is extremely confusing at times. Know what you're getting into if you sign up for the 4 week version of this class
Very genuine professor. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. He will do nothing but help you out. Taking this class in the summer is an arduous task due to its rapidity but if you stay on track, understand CONCEPTS rather than straight memorizing things, you will have a good foundation. That said, an A is kind of tough but doable. But you can't fall behind.
Lecture slides are full of diagrams, pictures, and graphs. Unless you take really good notes in class (which is hard to do since they go so fast), you pretty much need lecture capture to go over concepts again and again. KNOW ALL THE GRAPHS! Inside and out. Know situations where graphs can look different. Malchow is nice but hard work is needed
Professor was the kind of professor who genuinley wants to help his students. He provides lots of resources to be used with his class. The only thing was that his exams were sometimes confusing and tricky. He is very specific so you must REALLY know what you are studying and not just the basic picture.
He's a great teacher. Explains the material well, everything is on lecture capture. he welcomes, even encourages you to visit during office hours. Extremely nice and funny. he genuinely wants to see you succeed. The best professor I've had so far at UIC.
To be honest it was a challenging class. I really had to study and I still ended up getting a C on the test. Old exams help so much!! He's a really understanding and nice person.
Malchow is a great professor. He knows the material extremely well, and his lectures are useful as he clearly explains very complex material. However, just showing up to lectures and taking notes won't get you an A. The material on the exams is complex, and it requires a lot of knowledge about the material. Study your ass off and you'll get an A!
He gives iclicker points so go to class. He teaches the material very well and is very kind. Lab is easy because the TA helps you most of the time. Read the book and go over the past exams bc some of the questions are repeated in diff. ways. Dont expect to pass the exams just by looking at the notes and attending lecture.
Professor Malchow is the best professor at UIC! He is the type of professor who will make time to meet a student who needs help. Exams are mainly based off of old exams and mastering biology. His lectures are very helpful, never even opened the book for this class. I would definitely recommend taking BIOS 100 with this professor.
Dr. Malchow is a great professor and has very well planned course. There are 5 exams with retakes and lowest 1 is still dropped. He posts old exams, learning objectives and powerpoints to ensure that everyone does good in his class. He is ready to help you in his office hours. There is a lot of work, but it should be expected from a 5 credit class.
Professor Malchow is an excellent teacher. He is really good at explaining. But this class haves a lot of assignemts like mastering bio & the loadwork for this like a 200, so you are expected to work very hard. Every point counts .Discussions & pre-lab quizzes each week. There are 4 tests & a final. The lowest test, 2 iclicker, & quiz is dropped.
Favorite professor of all time! He genuinely cares about his students and is so nice during his office hours. You can only miss 100 points in his class so you can't get lazy at all. Exams are easy only if you really study. I went to lecture and watched every lecture capture before exams. Really enjoyed my time I'm this class and already miss it.
Hard Truth: If you have passion for Biology, take the class. This class is fast-pace so you really need to be on top of things. Last semester there were only 56 A's out of 250 students. Every point matters so do well in labs, participate in discussion, the group project, and especially the EXAMS! He drops the lowest score from each category! GLUCK!
He's one of the best. Kind, tries to be fun and funny, compassionate, and clearly cares. The work load is tough, lots of HW and labs, but every point counts. Exams matter most. Drops the lowest quiz and exam. He really tries, you should too. Wonderful professor, but for a 100 level, this class is challenging :)
He is the best prof. He really wants all of his students to get A. if you attend classes, do past exams, mastering biology questions and lecture you will get A without problem. TAKE HIM. BUY the book it helps a lot.
Do yourself a favor and don't take him, If i could do it over I would avoid him. Exams are ridic and its more chemistry than bio.
Malchow is by far my favorite professor at UIC, considering he learns the name of everyone of his 350 students in BIOS 100 every semester(Don't be surprised if he knows your name and you have never met him). For a 100 class, the material is difficult but Malchow always has office hours and greatly encourages questions. Exams are decent.
Great teacher overall, he really cares about getting the information to you in a way that is both entertaining and comprehensible. Tests are pretty easy if you show up to the lectures, participation with the clickers help your grade. and labs are educational. He's one of the rare professors out there that cares about his students!
Professor Malchow is by far the best introductory professor at UIC. His course is designed to help you learn how to learn. There are many buffers he provides such as dropping the lowest score out of each category and giving you a chance to retake exams. Take advantage of this and figure out how you learn best. You will have to work for the A.
GREAT Professor! Great, fun lectures! BUT, you gotta do the work. Go to his office hours, familiarize yourself with him. ASK Questions!!! He helps plus the past exams are really good for review since like half of the questions will be from them. I got an B+ , you can too :)
Lectures are amazing and he makes it interesting and easy to learn. If you absolutely can't take him then I'd recommend Muller. They both are the best! Super helpful and super nice.
Professor Malchow does an amazing job at teaching biology. During my 4 years at UIC I have learned the most in his class. He is such a great guy to get to know. Do the study guides and take the practice exams. Go to class and take notes. Do not wait the day before the exam to study. This is college. Get it together.
Loved his class! The notes were clear and lectures were interesting. He even started each class with a video off of youtube. Great professor and he's willing to help you out if you need it. Defiantly would recommend!
Professor Malchow is an amazing biology professor who has a great passion for teaching students. Malchow does i-clickers every lectures to help students understand the material better (very helpful). In addition, he drops 1 exam out of 5 (VERY GENEROUS OF A TEACHER). The exams are easy as long as you study. In addition, study for discussion quizzes
AWESOME professor! He really cares for his students and he only tests you on what he covers in class, labs, masterbiology and discussion. Don't buy the textbook, I never used it and you don't need to! Would take him again, seriously one of the best overall professors at UIC. Just put in the effort and an A will come your way.
Best BIOS100 professor, GET HIM. He is super nice and provides everything you need to get an A in this class. All you need to do is study hard. Clicker quiz every lab (questions posted day before), lots of masteringbio (uses those in exam), lots of old exams to practice from. His lectures are very clear with easy iclickers and LECTURE CAPTURED
Amazing professor. Very knowledgeable and knows how to keep his class attentive even though the lecture material can be boring. He's also very approachable and will answer his emails fairly quickly. You can tell he really cares about his students. Exams are really easy if you study past exams because most questions get reused.
Dr. Malchow is easily one of the best professors at UIC. He genuinely cares about his students and does everything he can to ensure that they are learning the material. Bios 100 is a challenging course if you fall behind. However, if you do everything you are supposed to do every week earning an A is VERY attainable. Do not cram for his tests!
Tests are NOT like old exams they are completely irrelevant and ridiculous. You ll have to learn mostly on your own, ppts are not helpful and have so much excessive materiel that will never show up on a test
He's a nice guy and all, but I did NOT enjoy his class at all. His lectures are so confusing and they are hard to pay attention to. Also, the test questions are way too hard for a 100 level class. He asks things that are so specific that you never even thought to study or learn. I would recommend taking Mike Muller's class.
Nice guy, but I don't like him as a professor. The exams were very detailed, which I don't think tested our understanding of the material. A good chunk of questions came from discussion articles, asking about very very specific things - again, it did not test our understanding of it.
When I took his bio 240 course he would have us watch certain videos before class and we would answer clicker questions in class and he gave great hints as to what to study which seems efficient to me compared to listening to lecture and trying to decipher whats important. The clicker questions really help you see what you need to study!
I am not sure why everyone is complaining so much about how hard his class is. It is definitely not very hard, unless you: (1) don't study, (2) don't pay attention, and/or (3) don't care. If you are not doing well in his class, some or all three are true. You should then not be a doctor or biologist, and good on him for giving you a crappy grade.
He's one of the nicest teachers I've ever met. So Funny!! Tests are relatively easy, just study off the old exams he gives you. Does a lot of iclicker questions. Only online homework. Labs are boring and can be difficult. You'll have 2 group presentations in Lab.
I love this class! However be sure to read the material and please ATTEND lecture!! It may seem useless, but it's very helpful. Also don't cram for his exams. Be sure to study the old exams most questions come off from them. Also utilize the book and go over lecture material before exams.
This class was very hard. His lectures did not help study for the exams and neither did previous exams so I was stuck guessing half the time. If there is another BIOS100 teacher available, take their class. Do not take malchow.
DONT TAKE MALCHOW. He teaches this class as if everyone is going to be a biologist. It's a 100 level course which is taught on a 400 level course. The only way to get an A is know all the material in detail. The labs are very difficult, very badly explained & designed. Tests are extremely detailed & only few questions from the past exams repeat.
AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COST. In order to get an A, get ready to do 1000+ online HW questions, click the i-clicker until it burns out or ur thumb gives out, do unexplained labs, read 5 useless articles a week that r on the exams, no study guides, past exam wont help u pass, TA's suck, tutoring is a waste of time & on top of all that BS 10 quizzes.
Okay, all of these negative comments are dramatic as hell. He was one of the fairest professors I have ever had. He offers so many points that even with TWO F's on my exams I STILL managed to get a B. He doesn't curve but the points he offers make up for it. He's a very hopeful professor and cares about his students. Make sure you do mastering bio.
BIOS240 is supposed to be one of the harder BIOS classes for the major, but Malchow gives you a solid opportunity to get the A or B. There are 5 total exams, you get one drop, and we retake each exam with other students which counts for 20% of the exam grade. If you're doing poorly, you're just not studying or showing up to lecture.
Malchow is one of the best educational professors at UIC. I learned so much from him! Yes, the class is a lot of work, but you will get such a deeper understanding of biology, it's worth it. His explanations are very clear. Exams are quite difficult so study a lot. But overall, I would really recommend him.
He is one of the best professor at UIC. He's always their if you need help. Totally recommend for all BIO classes he offers.
Malchow does not understand BIOS100 can not be treated like a 400 level course. This is a very hard class and you better get ready to work for your A. Only take this class with Malchow if it is the only class you are taking. He gives you too much to do every week and you will be stressed out. I recommend taking another BIOS100 teacher.
Malchow is an awesome professor, even though I absolutely loathed the material and only took it as a science requirement. His lectures helped me to understand the material to a great extent, and he made all of them entertaining. However, there is an emphasis on online work which is a huge drag, and he assigns a lot of needless group work.
he is awsome. his class is so fun. his character is awesome. he is so helpful and welcome to your all questions and problems. he send your email back less than an hour. so flexible, kind, knowledgeable, smart. Easy to get A if you come to his class and review his lectures and exam reviews I strongly recommend his class to you. enjoy this course.
you are going to love his class.
One of the best profs at UIC. Had him for bios 100 & 240, so I can tell you that he genuinely cares about his students. Go to class & pay attention, and you'll not only get an A, you'll learn so much. For exams, know the graphs and diagrams well. You'll have to draw them. Go to office hours and don't be surprised if he already knows your name!
Malchow is a great teacher and truly cares about his students. He gives a ton of opportunities to succeed and the class is a great basis for biology! Try to take advantage of the extra credit he offers. Also, the lowest quiz, lab, and attendance points are dropped!
He is a very nice guy. I'll give him that. Lectures were unorganized and a regurgitation of the videos we had to watch. The only way to pass this class is getting your hands on previous exams because his questions are ridiculous. That's what saved me. Exams are not simple. Don't waste money buying the book. You have to make friends in this class.
Heres the thing: Prof Malchow is really nice and a funny professor. His quizzes are easy cuz its online and attendances is not reallly mandatory. However, he assign ALOT of work, theres packback due every week, quiz every week, articles to read every week, and labs to finish every week. The amount of works for this class is just overwhelming.
A lot of work for a gen ed. Though most of your grade is dictated by the TA you get. If you get a chill TA that's not strict about what you turn in, then you're in good shape. Otherwise if you have a TA that cares too much about grades then its pretty bad.
Prof. Malchow is a good professor, I don't know why people are saying he's awful. His class does require effort so if you are looking for a class where you don't have to do much, this is not it. BUT, he is super kind and understanding. Go to office hours and email him. He is always willing to help. DO packback, that is the way to earn extra credit.
Professor Malchow made a 100 level course like a 300 level course. There is weekly homework, packback, quizzes, labs, etc. However, everything I just mentioned wasnt actually hard. What was hard were his exams which have questions that were SO specific. 50/300+ students got an A last semester. He DOESNT curve even though avgs were Ds/ Fs on exams
Malchow was AMAZING! Need to attend lecture to get a decent grade, but he's so entertaining that it's not a big deal. Definitely loves the subject. There's a lot of tiny stuff that contributes to your grade, so make sure to read the syllabus carefully because he doesn't remind you to finish stuff. Old tests are super helpful!
Gives a lot of pointless work. I did not know what was going on in the semester but still got a B hes loud and just bad when it comes to assignments.
Dr. Malchow is a very caring professor! The material is very challenging so be prepared to study!! You have to watch all the videos he assigns and make sure you know how to draw all the diagrams and graphs. He really does care about his students, so feel free to ask him any questions you may have. If you like to slack off, then I DO NOT recommend!
I took this class a while ago, and I've since graduated. Dr. Malchow is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is sincere, compassionate, knowledgable, and helpful. Listening to him in class was such a joy. I've never met anyone quite like him, and if he's reading this, I want him to know he's had a very big impact on my life <3 Lots of love.
I took this class last year and he is very fun with his lectures always enjoyed going to his class, he plays videos before class starts and I learned a lot from him.
Good Prof. Difficult material.
Does whatever he can to help students remember the material, ties in real world examples. Nice guy, very smart. Hard material but he tries his best to teach in an easy way to remember it.
good professor, nice class BUT definitely not an easy A. Lectures are interesting but you need to know the content inside out to perform well, know every single detail, all the graphs and diagrams on his ppt. It's very difficult to get an A but not impossible. he's a nice person but I wouldn't take him for another science class.
Professor Malchow is a really nice guy. He cares so much about the students that he makes a point to remember your name, which makes you want to succeed in his class. If you sit in the back be prepared to answer questions because this professor values in-class participation as well as demonstration.
Professor Malchow is hilarious! He makes class so enjoyable and explains everything very well! He is very passionate about his job and is very caring! He holds review sessions before every exam so there is absolutely no reason to not get an A! Exams are broken in 2 parts, solo, and group! If you're taking this class, take him! You won't regret it!
Pretty difficult if you don't put in the effort. There's a total of five exams (including the final), a lot of homework, discussion sheets, and lab reports. You can get an A if you put in effort, if not you'll more than likely get a high C or low B. Do any and all extra credit he gives out and you'll be okay. He's a decent professor overall.
Go to class for he clicker points. MEET FRIENDS and network in the class because it is extremely hard to do on your own. 5 tests and assignments every week . Class was super hard. Have to watch his videos outside of class to understand the material. Really passed because of the friend group I had in the class. Malchow was cool, class was not.
An absolutely amazing teacher, very helpful outside of class if needed. Feel free to get to know him, great recommendation for the future. As long as you go to the classes, pay attention, actively participate, do all of your homework, you're guaranteed an A. He's big on class participation but a very lenient grader. Show you care and he'll be same
He's a wonderful teacher. Made a very difficult class much more manageable because was also open to students' feedback. Just wanted the best for this students. A joy to have as a professor.
This dude is a really nice professor. We have makeup exams and the iClicker points are for participation only. However, make sure you're paying attention during lecture because he passes a microphone around in class where you have to say your name and answer a question. This appears on the lecture capture, so don't slip up. The Labs are so silly.
The thing is he shouldn't be a professor at all. He has a good personality, but he does a HORRIBLE job at explaining. Please teach better in class and don't waste time on irrelevant material.
Hes a great professor, funny and makes lecture/the material enjoyable. Extra credit is available, he has office hours and answers emails quickly. He holds review sessions before exams and gives tips on how to be successful in the course.
Lectures are the best part of this class, but are often times ruined by class participation. This lecture is 480 students and we dont have time for participation. The major problem with the class is the exams. The exams are extremely difficult even with adequate studying. His tips are not helpful and doesn't help you during office hours.
Malchow is a good professor but BIOS 110 is content heavy and ruined my semester. Exams are difficult, labs are annoying, and you have two group projects that are entirely unnecessary but stressful. UIC needs to split this into two different classes - way too much for one semester. If you have to take it, Malchow is a good choice, though.
Wouldnt wish this class on my worst enemy
With a class like this, the material isnt hard but theres a lot of it and its new, so reviewing it as many times as possible is always helpful plus he does a lot of clicker questions, so youll want to be at lecture. Also hes super easy to reach outside of lecture if youre confused at all and has very clear lectures all of the time.
He's great. Contents heavy but not that hard.
Dr. Malchow is a great professor. BIOS240/343 is a very challenging course, and requires a lot of time and effort to do well. Start the material early & do every question you can get your hands on. Attending office hours is probably the best thing you can do. First exam wont be the best but will teach you how to study for the remaining ones.
Not an intimidating dude. Cracks a lot of jokes. If ur not a science major, this class isnt for u. Lots of material, but easy to pass if you study the past exams (he post all old exams and reuses questions). Buy an i-clicker, do Mastering Biology, and EC articles. He passes around a microphone so students answer questions.
Wasn't a fan. I guess he is good if all you want to do is chill. Changes HW dates which is annoying but good for those who don't do HW on time. I thought going to class was a waste of time. 50% of the time he passes microphone around. Exams are plain memorization which I hated. All you need to do is memorize and quickly forget, which is useless.
Make sure to finish the Mastering Bio ahead of time, it will help you in the long run (trust me). Turn in all your lab work on time, and make sure to look over the grading with ur lab group (sometimes the TAs mess up with the grading). Use the lecture objectives during lectures and answer them. This will be useful for the exams. Use quizlet too.
He pulled through, I had a D for a midterm grade and ended up with a B as my final grade. Hes incredibly kind.
Just attend the classes and take notes. For each exam, go through last exams which at least half of the questions are the same.
Homework is stupid easy. Labs are easier than in Chem. iClickers are for participation points, so show up for the points. Tests are iffy tho. They are multiple choice though and yes they are mostly on the lecture, but for the A, you need to make sure you read the entirety of each slide, not just the main concepts. He also uses old exam questions :)
Most of your grade is based on exams, and the exams are hard. Malchow offers lots of past material as resources to study from, so take advantage of them, especially old exams.
He's a really good professor who cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He made the lectures fun and interesting. However, he's really thorough during lectures and a lot of things he says can easily be missed so be prepared for exams since questions on those little things can come up
I LOVE HIM. Hes retiring this year, but he is honesty one of the best professors you could have at UIC. He is so funny and explains the material really well. He will be missed!
Professor Malchow is definitely one of the best professors I've had at UIC. He gives you all the resources you need to get an A and the labs are super easy too. Just study the slides and do the previous exams he gives you and you're pretty much guaranteed an A.
