Real down to earth and very informative teacher. He is willing to work with you and easily accessible. His classes demand you deal with new approaches.
I was a freshman and i had my first dose of cultural theory - yeah!!! and this guy has the best stories; the BEST!!!!
He's an ****, but if you talk in class and pretend like you care you get a good grade. I got an A on a paper I ended with a Billy Joel quote if that tells you anything.
He is a very proactive teacher that requires you to think out of the box. He prizes opinions and questions. He is a very interactive professor and provides thoughtful stories, guest speakers, and videos.
not helpful AT ALL... very unorganized... he has NO email... NO phone number... and half the time, he's not there during office hours! on top of all that, he pretends to be open minded, but is very hypocritical... it's kind of like... "you can have an opinion as long as it agrees with mine"
horrible! doesn't give any kind of feedback, and assigns random grades. there is no "grading rubric" which means u gotta be a big suck-up to get on his good side. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES! trust me
I might come late to his class from time to time, but I have a lot respect for the stuff this man teaches. It's not easy to teach a class like that (after most of us have been brainwashed by our U.S. History textbooks in high school or wherever). You can get a lot out of his class!
He is a extrely knowledge individual whom tells you the truth about Ameican and Indian Historty. Additionally, many people who critisize him are White people who either do not beleive what he says or do not beleive that their ethnicity have and continue to depress "minorities".
For an introductory course, it required a lot of work and writing. Not a very approachable person. Interesting in his lectures but seemed very harsh and strict.
I don't know what these negative comments are about he is very approachable, he despises a kiss a## and grades based on your effort put into the class. he keeps the class as interesting as possible.
He is rather harsh and you have to kind of agree with him to get the best grade possible. He is stern looking, if you are white or asian avoid his class otherwise you should have a better time. He is not **** he just "prefers" certain people. I admit I think his class is a waste and his lectures are never concise-they wander.
Crazy awful professor. His ethnic studies is all about native americans and nothing else. Really angry, does not do email or telephone. I am paying alot to got to ucr and he is ripping me off.
From the first day of class, I knew this professor was a waste of time. He should not even teach because all he teaches is about Native Americans. Two weeks into class he is still so obsessed with his race and his lectures are not concised with his readings. Angry all the time and very stern. With a doctor degree, he still doesnt know how to teach!

should change his class to native american studies not ethnic studies...get outta here mann
he talks in a very mono tone manner and he seems like a jerk and inapporachable but if you ask him for help, he'll help you. he seems really stern and mean but outside of the class, he's a really good guy. borderline cool. i think that people kind of judge him without really trying to get to know him. he's really not a bad guy/prof.just talk to him
note to honors students: this prof. only gave out 1 A on the first essay midterm. proceed with caution. Wants his students to be mechanisms for change, but ends up creating an atmosphere where students abhor native americans, and their culture. grades exceedingly difficult and discourages students from persuing ethnic studies as a major or minors
I can say, as a former student of Dr. Perez's, that he is very biased in his presentation of history, and probably not the best person to teach a lower-division introductory course on ethnic studies. With that said, he is great for upper division history, and this is where he belongs. Very helpful, and actually quite interesting.
this teacher is feakin hard to get an A in. has no grading rubric, has a harsh attendance grading policy, and drowns out dissent. A's are given out to only about less than 5 percent of the class. Another 10 get B's. So 85% get C's or lower... r u willing to take the risk?
He is extremely biased in his lectures. It would help if he could provide both sides of arguments to the class. He also doesn't respond to any emails and is not very approachable.
this guy is bad news. only teaches about native americans in a class that is supposed to look at all american ethnic groups. we are almost to the end of the quarter and we still don't know what the exam schedule is. seriously! he has brought in a bunch of ****s to give guest lectures. this is an awful experience.

Hard, unorganized, unclear on everything. On lectures on Indian stuff. Has too many guest lecturers and it makes everything even more confusing. Stay away!
Worst professor ever
The professor isn't all that bad if you talk to him outside of class he's cool. He is a bit eccentric but apparently he didn't want to teach this class so it makes sense. This class is harder than your average breath requirement but it's really interesting if you give it a try. I was a poly sci major and changed it to ETST cause i liked it so much
This teacher makes me angry. He is heavily biased, and he insults the students' intelligence. He takes opinions like a grain of salt, and is obviously very bitter towards the white race. He is also very petty and willing to give failing grades to students who fail to show up to a lecture, even though they have worked hard on the essays and whatnot.
the first thing the professor said was that never email him. he is extremely boring in his lectures. He just gets up there and starts talking without connecting his current lecture to his previous lectures. He tries to make the class hard by giving three 10 page papers to write. Simply the worst professor I have ever had.
I think that Dr. Perez should teach the way he does by lecturing in the class, I don't think many people shows up if they know that they will be called on in class. I thought the class was very in depth about the historical context, and just 'YOU' explaining it would be enough. You're the first lecture that I had a teacher call on students@random
I agree with the comment below. simple one of the worst UCR professor I have encountered. His class is unorganized, sells a book that he has no copyrights to. he is deliberately tyring to make this class hard. He hates his students the moment you walk in the class. he is not helpful at all! dont take this class if he is teaching.
if hes teaching the course..DROP IT! hes boring...mean...unclear..the TAs are great...but perez randomly selects papers to grade himself..if he does take yours..dont expect As or Bs..he also randomly calls on people in class..and if you dont know the answer..u get a F in participation...DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
This prof is bad news and maybe the worst prof at ucr. No organization to his course and very unrealistic expectations. The reader that we had to buy from some guy in the alley was a crazy mix of articles that made no sense and cost $55 and is real garbage. Run from this prof.
I was really shocked by how many people wrote negative and vicious reviews of Dr Perez. He is the best and most interesting teacher that I have ever had. I worked hard and got an A in the class. I talked to him a couple times after class and he was really helpful and open minded. Take this class if you want to know the real history.
I wanted to defend Prof Perez too from negative comments. Teaching style is very kool, thought provoking but gotta pay attention. Totally helped me with my paper in his office. I think certain people dont want to listen to the truth,he tells it like it is and I thought he presented both sides well. Will definitely take another class. He's great.
This class wasn't too bad, but it is a lot of work. There weren't any test but there were 3 essay which require a lot of time. the guest speakers were interesting. Class attendance really doesn't matter.
Terrible teacher. 90% of the class he spent on Native Americans and their problems. Basically, he indirectly tried to tell everyone to hate all Europeans. Had only 1 lecture on Japanese people. The reading and writing assignments were insane for an intro course. I got a B but it's bad for such an easy course. Take another teacher!
those good reviews are nuts. this is the worst professor on campus. avoid at all costs.
Even my TA thought he was awful. That has to be some sort of validation for all the student comments. I'm not being the bitter failed student either. I got an A-, but seriously, this teacher is definitely the worst professor I've had so far.
Just took this class for summer session and really enjoyed it. Dr Prez is funny, engaging, but a little intimidating at first. Do the reading and go to class, you will get a B for sure. He seemed pretty open minded to me and likes to play devils advocate. I'll probably take another class with him.
Just took this class for summer session and pretty much agree with the last review. This is not the easy A I had heard it would be. But it was a very interested class and I feel like I have a lot better understanding of this country's history. He doesn't push his views on you and has some good stories. If you want a challenging different class, OK.
Is this guy for real? Worst professor ever! How about a little structure next time? Perez really is terrible. I am not happy that I spent money on this summer school course. He just rants and raves. He must have a really, really small brain. Peres is the least informed prof on campus. AVOID!
Worst prof on campus. Has some really twisted ideas. Did not learn anything except that I will never take a class from this prof ever again. Unless you hate America, stay away from this clown.
That last comment just goes to show how this website gets misused for politcal agendas. Who wrote it, Bill O'Reilly? Interesting class, and Perez doesn't grade you on whether you agree with him or not.
Perez is passionate about Native American Culture because he himself is Native American. I feel he should have covered other ethnic backgrounds more in the class. The reading is REQUIRED. If you can, take someone else.
Three words to ultimately describe this course: LACK OF STRUCTURE. He some how always manages to incorporate native americans into the lecture.
I went to every class read everything and still i dont know what Perez' fkn point was. DURRRRRRRRRRR Perez makes no sense with his lectures. Take Nazi Navarro instead.............. The mid term adverage grade was 16/30 . He just reads off dates of history that are connected to race problems. NO Substanceand no structure...
This is not an easy class, but very interesting and useful. Prof Perez tutored me one on one during his office hours and offered to help anyone. You really have to do the reading though. One of my fave profs. I'll take another class with him.
Not the greatest lecturer in the world. You will need to read. He tells you one the first day of the class, if you do not read, you will fail. But if you do the reading with any sort of determination, there should be no way you get any less than a B. Gave a take home final. He has his shortcomings, but he's not as bad as everybody makes him out to
Really cool Professor, keeps class interesting. Very helpful. If at some point history hasn't made you mad, then you haven't learned a thing. you'll be shocked by what you get out of this class. if you're looking see something you have never seen before, this guy will show you.
No structure to lectures, just ranting. I took this class thinking I would learn some interesting obscure religious myths and rituals, but instead the class was 80% about how the white man ruined Native American life. If you like to read 2-3 hours everynight take this class. No curve. 3 Essays each worth 25% and a mandatory section worth 25%.
With an exception to the required readings, Perez is an easy A. The essays are completely open to interpretation and your opinion on the subject is irrelevent. In other words, it doesn't matter what you write, so long as your papers make logical sense and you don't have any massive grammatical issues you should easily end up with a A or B.
Absolutely unprofessional. Wears jeans and shirt, and ends his sentences with something along the lines of "you see what I'm saying." His tone at times is also very unprofessional, and because of an exercise he has lost his credibility as a professor. I expect UC caliber teachers, and from the looks of it, he isn't a very good one.
great professor.dont know what the person below is talking about.very informative and he is not the only teacher who wears jeans to class. His tests are off the readings and lec so if u study ull get an A.he doesnt make lec mandatory but its better u attend. he does his job. he teaches u. the rest is up to you.
Perez is a good teacher. He assigns a lot of reading, but his tests aren't too hard. If you go to lecture and do the reading, you'll be fine. Some ppl have complained about the way he dresses and talks, but I don't have a problem with it. He is more informal but you still learn a lot. His lectures don't match the reading, but both are relevant
I don't know why the heck it would matter how the guy dresses or talks, because I learned the material perfectly fine. His lectures are really full of information, and you MUST do the readings, but his midterms are easy if youve just skimmed the readings, and he's more than happy to help students.
He seems like a smart professor, but he is absolutly BORING! I've gone to every single 1 of his lectures and fell asleep through 90% of them and I sat in the front...I just couldnt stay awake! The readings are just like his letures, boring. I dont know, maybe I didnt like the subject, but I did take the best naps in that class. When he talks he kin
He has a somewhat boring lecture style, but I always found the content to be at least interesting and at times really eye opening. If you're looking for an easy A you wont get it here, but if you like to be challenged and want to hear some controversial ideas then this might be the man for you!
He is very boring but nice to look at. His tests are super hard and he assigns a ridiculous amount of readings. Its out of control. All he talks about are Native Americans. Class is boring a dry
Worst professor i have ever had. Assigned horrendous amounts of work for a freshmen class. Also had an episode where he offended the class, refused to apologize and told all those offended to leave because "he would teach his class as he saw fit."
class is definitely hard. if you can avoid taking it then do. there is soooooooo much reading. and test are basically based on the readings so you must read. i got a b+ in the class but if it was any other class with the amount of work i put into it i would have got a A+. boring and hard but you can pass.
super hard professor...ridiculously hard midterm and final... a challenge...if you don't read, study, attend class you are screwed...if you want to learn it is the best class... but if you want to cruise...you gonna get bruised...
I'm upset but not surprised at some of these comments. NOT the easiest class, but the most interesting and empowering one I've had in college. Prof P never forces his views on you no matter how different they are from your own. I learned more about this country and our true history than I have in 13 years of school. Best prof I've had yet. Thanks.
TERRIBLE teacher. His tests aren't really trying to measure your knowledge, just TRICK you. Very detailed paragraph questions. I'm not saying this because I am bitter--I received a B in the class. But if you wanted to take an easy, laid back class, this is NOT the place to go.
All of Dr. Perez' classes have been usefull, challenging and rewarding. I thought that is what going to school is supposed to be, not an easy class. His teaching techniques are essential to our learning experience. I feel appalled at the negative comments I have read. I would like to see more classes carried out like his.
Not the easiest professor to have but he isn't as bad as some of the other reviews may lead you to think. The grade you will get in his class is what you put into it. The class isn't hard if you at least put some effort into it. Perez actually does give a damn about effort.
Great professor. Extremely dedicated to his subject. Although some issues are quite controversial, he is always straightforward and hones. Had a great experience in taking this class.
He's not the WORST professor, and he obviously cares a lot about his subject. But lectures could be dry (interesting stories though), readings boring as hell. Tough grader, funny how the students who seemed more anti-European seemed to do better. Coincidence, I guess. Lots of annoying people in class, which isn't his fault but something to consider.
I found the lectures to be a little dull, but contrasting that were all of his first hand experiences that he shared with the class. I didnt think he was too tough on grades, it just felt like he really wanted "A" students to earn their "A", and not just breeze through. Very knowledgeable and helpfull, as long as you speak up.
He assigned a few hundred pages of reading from the course reader a week. Final, midterm, two papers were the bulk of the grade. The most harsh grader and doesn't accept dissent.
Took a class on California Indians. Was extremely boring. Most of the lectures were so irrelevant, I admit I skipped about half of them. Do the readings and you will be fine. He obviously loves what he teaches and is a nice man, but god he can be dry
Uses the book ALOT, lots of reading 100 pages or so per lecture. Lectures are boring so are the films. But is clear on history behind the readings.
I could rate Dr. Perez if he actually lectured. Lecture was canceled twice, we had two guest lecturers, and at least 6 other full lectures were spent watching films. When I pay for my education, I expect to actually get something that I couldn't have just watched on YouTube.
You have to read the reading he assigns because all the essays and tests are on the reading, everything he lectures in class is useless. But it wasn't to hard
Confusing, unorganized, didnt really know what he was doing...
The worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Unorganized and a horrible teacher overall, said many insane things to his class during the quarter. He's an idiot.
Have to disagree. Perez is the BEST profesor I took in the last three years. Worked my butt off and got an A for the grade. Learned alot and he let us express our own opinions. Totally cool.
crazy hard, dont take class if u think its gonna be eazy..readings are long, some hard to understand... professor supports your own opinion... man, lots of info on indians, i got a B+
One of the best professors I have had. His courses can be very difficult and the readings extremely long but it is only to challenge you. Like most of these reviews say, if you want an easy A and a laid back course, Perez is not the professor for you.
Class is not easy. Extensive amount of reading. Make sure to get help from your T.A's or it will be a bumpy ride.
one multi choice midterm, one intense 8-pg paper, and one final in-class essay prompt given ahead of time. giving us 1hour & 20 min to write a paper that could could be 10 pages easy if you answer all the questions and cite all the quotes the prompt ask you to use. =/ would not recommend him ever.
"one multi choice midterm, one intense 8-pg paper, and one final in-class essay prompt given ahead of time. giving us 1hour & 20 min to write a paper that could could be 10 pages easy if you answer all the questions and cite all the quotes the prompt ask you to use" says it all.
This class is not easy, but it's not impossible. Obviously if you want to succeed you need to do the readings and go to discussion. My only real gripe is that he gave us about an hour and half to write an essay that really needed at least 2 hours to write given the amount of questions he asks. Then again, we had the finals during week 10.
Honestly, i dont know why people are complaining about this prof. He speaks clearly and hes passionate on the subject. His assignments are ridiculously easy: skim 20-80pages a week and you're good to go. Anyone who complains about the assignments&papers is clearly a chass major or isnt willing to spend 1-2hrs a week on hw/papers.
I loved this class. It is not hard, but if you put in the extra effort you can learn an amazing amount of valuable information. It really opened my eyes to the inner workings of American government and history. Prof Peres is a good story teller and really held my attention. I was eager to go to class every day. I highly recommend!
Very helpful prof! Met me in office hours three times to help me with class. He's a really good speaker and I found the class engaging. The class was "easy" I guess, but the assignments were challenging and I actually learned something. Overall, thumbs up.
This was one of the hardest and also the best classes I ever took at UCR. Unfortunately I took this in my final quarter as a graduating senior because I really would have wanted to take another class with Dr. Perez. I've already used the research skills he taught us in my new job and can't thank him enough. A great teacher. Take him for 191R.
Not very clear and has a very hard midterm. Only 20 questions so if you miss one your grade drops significantly.
overall straight forward class. Put a good effort forward and you can easily get a A. One midterm, one paper, and final. There is a lot of videos in this class most of which are interesting so it is not just lecturing for hours.
Overall the class is not that hard. There is a lot of reading, but most of it is interesting. We watch a lot of videos during lecture that are interesting as well. And Professor Perez is a great professor!
The class was not bad, I learned a lot. Notes from lecture are not really needed, you dont use them for tests and the essays. I felt like he used a lot of class times to show unnecessary videos, some are relevant, but some are not. Hard to keep up with reading, but do it! I think one of the main reasons I got an A was cause my ta graded easy
This class was epic!!! in my opinion. We dealt with the beginnings of racial views and how society structured racism. Doc Perez showed us some very touching stuff when it came to race and ethnicity. My TA Meghan was very helpful and very pretty too!not a bad site too:) go to discussion it counts and is very helpful when it came. Best class ever!
I'm currently in his class for history on SW Native Americans. Without a doubt the most dull, erratic, and absurd style of teaching I've encountered at UCR. He loves hearing himself talk. If YOU enjoy hearing a middle aged mediocrity lecture all whilst scratching his face with a pointing rod, please take his class.
Took this class as a rec. It was a waste of time, makes you read useless articles and never uses any content from lec on tests. One 20 question MT, 1 8page paper, and an in class essay for a final. Don't take this class, specially if its just for a rec. Haven't taken stupid final yet. So over this dumb class
While Dr. Perez knows what he is talking about and is extremely enthusiastic about his work.. his class is pretty bad. The lecture notes were useless on the tests. Really boring articles in a required reader that you can only get from one place. Essay questions ask about a million questions for one essay. 7-10 page paper for a intro class...
This class was ridiculously hard. Took it for a breadth req and was a complete waste of time. Everyone did bad on the midterm, lecture is pointless, there's a 10 page essay, and the final is an in class essay. It is was too much work for an intro class. There's also a lot of reading and weekly reading notes. Get John as a TA, that's what helped me
this class was SO HARD. LOTS of reading and lecture is pretty much mandatory if you want to do well. ALL of the midterm questions come from reading. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DONT WANT TO READ A LOT. Try to get John as a TA, he makes things fun and interesting. overall a good class though and i'm glad i took it.
Lots and lots of reading involved with weekly summaries. Material was interesting and Perez made lecture engaging, but it was a pretty depressing class. 1 MC midterm worth 20% of grade, 20 Q's. 1 term paper 8 pages, and an in class essay as the final. You can get a B if you put in effort. Skim the reading at the very least.
There were weekly readings/homework assignments, 1 MC midterm, 1 8-10 page paper, and 1 essay question for the final. This course requires lots of reading. All his exams/essays required pulling quotes from the readings. Lecture was a waste of time. Do the readings, go to your TA for the essay questions, and you'll be set for an A.
Overall Professor Perez is pretty cool. He made the class concise and clear, but I guess it helps that I had him for discussion. There is plenty of reading, so if you are one to skip the readings, don't take this class.
Mandatory reading every week - approx. 100 pages. Multiple choice midterm, 8-10 page near the end of the quarter, and a relatively difficult in-class essay final. During lecture, Prof. Perez stated that his class was NOT going to be an easy class at all. Thank god I "S/NC" this class.. If you're looking for an easy "A", look elsewhere
Teaches very boring. Long and unnecessary. Hyprocrite
Professor Prez is a great teacher, he assigns a lot of readings. But you kind of don't need to do all of them, just do the one that the asks you to reference in paper and you'll be fine. He gave the prompt for the midterm to us to take home and write on an index card and then copy in class. One paper to do at home. And the final was take home too!
He is amazing. Honestly. Yes he's tough because he expects you to work for your grade. This is college. Honestly I'm a lazy student but this subject is just so interesting. I changed my major because of him. He is so inspiring and thoughtful. His three hour lectures make me pay attention because of how interesting they are. But be prepared to READ!
Professor Perez is a great teacher, who is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. I would definitely take his classes again if I get the chance. His lectures are amazing and the readings he chooses are actually very interesting. All readings are posted, so no books necessary. He gives you the prompt for midterm ahead of time!
As long as you annotate the readings, skim through them get the main concept , you'll be fine
He is a good storyteller. I learned a lot about indigenous people. We watched a lot of movies in class.
I absolutely loved him, fav professor at ucr by far!! hes so passionate and makes lecture fun. Extremely down to earth guy. Just do your readings and you should be fine. he clearly states midterm/final prompts in advance and you get a notecard to write whatever you want for them!!
I liked Dr. Perez so much that I'm taking another one of his classes even though I don't need the credit. He is extremely objective/honest. He might seem tough at first but he is super nice and is worth talking to outside of class. He assigns a good amount of reading but it's all relevant and helpful to you, no busy work. I highly recommend him.
This class should be called the History of Ethnicity and Race not an Intro class. Basically talks about how horrible white people were and all the horrible things they did. Does let you bring in a notecard for the test but the test question is so broad that you don't have a chance to answer it in a short amount of time. Big book, lots of reading.
I liked Professor Perez and the class is easy enough. But his TA's are super arrogant and very disruptive during lecture. One of the TA's is constantly on her laptop during the lecture. Thankfully I had Brian as a TA, he was tough but his discussions were super helpful.
As long as you do the readings and get the main idea out of the reading, you should be good.
He is an amazing instructor. Makes class interesting with his story telling. Technically there is a lot of reading, a few hundred pages, but you do not have to necessarily read it all to get a good grade. I only did half the readings, showed up, and tried on the exam and got an A+. Easiest A I've ever had. Only dedicated 30 min a week to this class
I took Perez for Race and Ethnicity and it was good. It was a 500 person lecture hall but I was lucky enough to get an awesome TA (Frank Perez). Going to lecture was long but still really cool to listen to Perez lecture. There is also a couple quizzes and they're all spread out. Your main grade is in the discussion class. I definielty recommond!
Professor Perez is an amazing professor. Present information clearly and logically. Lectures reinforce reading. I would take him again.
Professor was super boring in my opinion. Only went to the first 2 or 3 lectures and went to every discussion and passed the class with an A+. A lot of reading for the class but I didnt read a single bit.
Professor Perez was one of my favorite professors yet. He is very passionate about teaching and does a good job at teaching. Only gives 1 midterm which is an essay, but he allows one notecard. The final is also an essay but does not allow a notecard. However, he gives prompts ahead of time. If you have a chance to take his Native American class!
Very passionate professor. There's only 4 essays but the prompts are so specific and he practically addresses them in lecture. Easy A. It's REALLY hard to fail this class.
Perez is a great choice. The class is easy and extremely informational. The reading doesn't take more than some commitment maybe twice a week, and the essays don't take more than 3 hours to type. The prompts directly relate to the reading and the lecture material. Your grade is made up of 4 short essays (3 pages) and participation in discussion.
Perez is fine, he's clear and understandable in the lecture vids (asynch). But he's totally offline - no office hours, no email responses. You're relying on your TA. Essays are your entire grade and the prompts are incredibly specific so make sure you keep up with lectures and reading. Lectures 120-180 mins/week, reading 100+ pgs/week.
Asynchronous lectures helped with the essays, but Perez was NOT accessible AT ALL. No office hours and no email responses. Your grade is made up of discussion section attendance and 3 essays (all graded by your TA). The prompts are posted 1 week before each deadline, so go to your TA's office hours to see what they will be looking for when grading!
Terrible, stressful, chaotic experience. My TA left during week 8 and had to get switched to the other TA. First TA hadn't graded anything so I did not have a grade for the class until Week TEN - so no option to drop if needed. Prof is not accessible, doesn't have internet. New TA didn't want to talk to students in my section to help them. AWFUL!!!
Professor Perez is a great professor and he is fair when it comes to grading. The lectures were asynchronous and long but will move to be in person and probably be shorter in the future. There was quite a bit of reading but it's very informative. He was hard to reach this quarter, but he should be more accessible when classes are in person.
I am giving this rating for the TA's teaching this course. All prof does is upload lectures, but the TA's grade all three papers. I would avoid this class as the TA's, specifically Larry Smith grades so harshly overall and takes so many points off on simple grammatical issues. Also, prof is hard to reach and the course is unorganized. AVOID!!
Bro rlly didn't do nothing all quarter. We had like only 5 classes thru out. He's cool though
THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE TA's, since they will determine your grade in this course. Jazmin-Did not go over readings, was unable to answer questions about the readings when asked, did not respond to emails, and frequently replied to questions regarding important concepts or information with, "that's a really good question". Larry- see reviews below
Dr. Perez is knowledgable about Southwest Native Americans. He assigns a lot of reading. He has an awesome ability to bring out the best in a student. Scheduling office hours is a must if a student plans on passing with an above average grade.
The grade for this class is based on three essays and your attendance/participation in discussion section. The prompts for the essays can be kind of unclear, luckily my TA (I think his name was Ramon Pineda) was really helpful and thoroughly outlined prompts for us. Content is pretty interesting but you don't have to stress out trying to keep up.
Grade consists of 2 papers, discussion, and the final. The grading on the paper depends on your TA, but overall I think the grading was fair. Lectures weren't mandatory (discussions are). The final is 30% of your grade (15 questions -> 2% overall grade/question). Before taking the final I had a 95% in the class, and the final dropped me to a B.
He is passionate about what he teaches. Honestly to get a good grade in this class all you have to do is show up to lecture and pay attention. I had Val as a TA and she was amazing.
The class is manageable with a good TA. Lectures are asynchronous, but engage with them and the readings to nail the essay prompts. For study prep, unstuckstudy is a helpful tool alongside the usual suspects like ChatGPT. Overall, a solid course if you stay on top of the work.
Lecture content is useful for papers. TAs grade everything. 2 papers with long/hard prompts, 3-4 pgs, in class essay final. Some lectures felt like a waste of time. Reading inconsistent, some wks short while other wks were a whole book. Doesn't respond to emails. Larry was my TA, he grades harshly. Papers are based on readings and video lectures.
I don't even know how I'm able to write this, as my hand is numb from all the writing professor perez has made us write. I ended up in urgent care last night with a broken wrist due to the immense amount of writing. I now have to wear prescription glasses for all the reading he made us do. I will be put into a psych ward as of tmrw. Do not take.
