He is a great professor who helps out and actually cares about his students.
seems like he cares about his students but kills you on the exam.
Nice guy and all, he's kind of like your typical funny uncle. Maybe tries too hard to be funny sometimes. Make sure to ask for help if you need it. Exams are challenging (it's tax after all) and he marks them really hard.
It is easy with enough effort, just like in any other accounting course, as long as you do the home work and keep re-doing the home work, it is guaranteed to be easy. As the course syllabus says for all 4th year accounting like auditing, intermediate, advance accounting ,etc. it would say in all caps to "PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE."
Easy to get a decent grade if you practice enough. Be prepared to in class exercises - very helpful
Great prof. No doubt. His courses are hard not because of his style but it's just a hard subject in general(tax). However, Rob is really approachable and will try his best for you to understand the material. Loved being in his class (except for the workload).
best prof ever!!!!!!
He's okay. Always making jokes in class. Certainly knows what he is talking about. The exams are brutal though, incredibly vague and confusing questions. Sometimes he will go on these long tangents about some personal story of his (often bragging about how smart he is), regardless of whether or not it is useful to learning anything.
Prof Pilling was actually a great professor. A tip to anyone coming into his class, READ THE TEXTBOOK AND SLIDES BEFORE CLASS!! IF YOU DO THIS THEN THE LECTURES ARE A SIMPLE AND EASY REVIEW, AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING! the class should serve as almost a review. overall a great professor with simple exams if you did the studying!!
Lack of control of the lecture hall and goes on long, unnecessary tangents that simply distract from the content. Somehow I'd rather hear him read slides about accounting than listen to him unengagingly ramble about his career. On the bright side, everything is in the textbook and slides, so you can skip all the lectures and do somewhat well.
Not bad. He does waste a lot of time talking about random stuff. He is an accountant, so the accounting part of the course was good, but the finance and investing information could have been clearer. A bit of a smug attitude in my opinion, but he definitely does care about the students. Probably awesome in higher level accounting and tax classes.
His lecture doesnt help at all. Hes a good person tho
Robert Pilling is a nice guy but a bad teacher. The whole test was completely based on the readings, none of it was on the lecture slides. All of his lecture slides had nothing to do with the reading. Avoid this teacher!
He is a great professor with an extremely positive attitude! Always willing to help and explains everything in great detail.
Does not teach the course material only makes it more difficult to understand. High-key wants you to fail. I know all about his wife, his accounting job, and his trips to Calgary because thats all he talks about.
Lecture and textbook do not match up. He always tries to make sure that the people who don't go to class miss something important that he doesn't post anywhere and only says in class, so if you skip make sure you have a friend in class.
Robert was such a sweetheart, despite how boring and information-packed the lectures were. He told a lot of stories which made it hard to pay attention (fell asleep a few times), but you can tell the guy's got a good heart. Be prepared to memorize an entire textbook!
Great prof. Lectures were hilarious, loved his humor.
Great professor! I appreciate the way he tries to engage the class, and his jokes are funny as well. Really cares about his students, and gives us life advice on top of course material. As long as you show up to class, you will succeed!
I wish I have seen comments about him before taking his class. He is such a great guy but horrible teacher. He just makes everything harder when trying to explain. Lecture slides don't correlate with book. Studying with his resources is a hell. His lectures are boring by content anyways and the way he tries to make lectures fun just makes it worse
Robert is a nice person but can struggle with giving clear explanations of certain concepts. His exams are based on so much information from the textbook and slides that this course will take a huge chunk of your time. He is approachable and is willing to help. However, his online final exam was brutal. Get ready to memorize and entire textbook!
Nice prof, willing to help! Not a fan of his lectures, they are a little long and sometimes not interesting but it can just be the subject itself! He is fair on his exams. It's best to study with mixing textbook and lecture Powerpoints. Study two days before each exam and you should be okay!
One of the most tireless, committed professors I met in my entire time at school, but absolutely impossible to get away with not knowing the course material. His style of presenting this daunting subject of taxation brought it to life for me, and his passion and enthusiasm is infectious. Read ahead, and use the notes and spreadsheets he provides!
Is very rude when you attempt to get feedback.
In general, first year MOS courses are curved to a 68ish. I managed to get a 87 in this course but pilling was not the greatest prof. Reused lectures from previous years with no effort to make changes and his quizzes and exams sometimes tested the most random stuff in the textbook/slides. He isn't the best but read the tbook and put in the work 3/5
Rob Pilling, I did not see his face the entire semester but MOS1023 is the worst course I have ever done. There is no final exam but the syncs are enough to lower your marks to the point of failure. BEWARE! If you want to read 100 pages of boring accounting every week + 3 hour lectures + at least 2 weekly quizzes + biweekly syncs, go for it!
High commitment required. 30-40 pg of tb + 2 hrs of lecture + 1-2 quizzes + forum participation per week. Tests are on the harder side. Friendly and caring guy and does all he can when students need help.
Nice person horrible proffessor, kind of like he wants to fail you. Asks the most random questions that you sometimes can't even find in the textbook. Forums will save your grade tho!!!!!!!
Awful professor. Goes way too fast and it seems as though he wants the students to fail.
found his class to be almost more difficult than business 1220. Although there was no final, the synchronous assessments were random, there was barely any time to finish. He is also extremely rude to a lot of his students and sent out some passive aggressive emails. I love most of my profs but he made this class way more difficult than it should be
SO MUCH CONTENT- such a disorganized course
Terrible professors. Sends passive-aggressive emails to the class which makes him seem very unapproachable. Goes way too fast and tests on way too much content at once. Puts random questions on exams.
If I could give a negative I would, complains when people take SRA's, inconsiderate, meh teacher and just honestly doesn't feel like he cares about his students.
the MOST worst professor i have ever had. this man spams his students with emails 5 times daily and yells at everyone in his emails. Not to mention his spelling errors and mistakes in his emails and exams. He is also disrespectful towards his students and called us dyslexic. Overall careless prof, terrible lectures, avoid him at all costs.
This is the worst class I have ever taken and I never want to take one of his classes again. This prof definitely did not read his own textbook because if he did he would realize that it is not an effective way to learn. He is never willing to help, and will make you watch YouTube videos about cars and then ask dumb questions about them on tests.
The tests drive me crazy even if I put a lot of hard work on this course.
Course is disorganized with an overwhelming amount of content. Asks pointless questions like what colour tie a person was wearing in a video, and other random things on assessments. Exams and quizzes give you 1 min to answer each question so prepare to feel rushed. He is nice and can be understanding but has sent some emails that come off as rude.
Heavy workload aside, he is treats his students under the motto "guilty until proven innocent." He has had cheaters in his previous classes and takes it out on all of us. Many students deferred their tests late this year and he mocking posted "there must be a covid outbreak in my class!!" ... guess whose entire student building got covid that week?
This man has a distorted sense of humor. He finds pleasure in making work unnecessarily hard while laughing in your face as you complain about the complexity of the tasks at hand. Tests and assessments are linear so once you've selected an answer, you can not go back to change your mind. You don't have access to test corrections either.
Really aggressive weekly emails. Topics included how we would get eaten alive in Ivey if we dare cheat in his course, accusing students of being dyslexic that got a particular assessment question wrong, covid gaslighting, so on and so forth. This is also a very dense course with a heavy time commitment. Good luck folks!
Terrible professor. Avoid him at all costs. He is rude and disrespectful to his students and he does not deserve to be able to teach here.
Terrible. Absolutely rude professor. He is a disgrace to the University and should be banned from teaching here ever again.
Professor Pilling was a great prof! He's super accessible, will respond to all your emails and shows up to office hours. There is definitely a lot of reading involved in the course but if you do the readings and study hard, it is well reflected in the exam. If you put in the time and effort, it's not as hard to do well in the course as others say.
I did not like pilling. His lectures made him seem egotistical and when emailing for help, he normally would respond in a rude or passive aggressive manner. Lecture were kind of boring and most things I learned were just from reading the textbook and teaching myself. Also a little unorganized. Def manageable but not the best
pilling's lectures are complicated and hard to understand. information is all over the place and midterm/exams are made super hard. pilling purposely wants the average to be low (below 60%). would definitely not take again.
I have to say that the textbook and lectures are terrible; you'd better get lots of resources outside his class to be successful. Having quizzes every week and they are hard tbh. For us is 1% per quiz and drop the lowest one. I sometimes don't think he answers my questions directly and makes me feel bad. Would not take his class again if possible.
He's a good guy and cares about his students. But the material is so dry, especially the second half of the course. The textbook is terrible and the quizzes are pretty difficult.
You have to use alternative sources beyond the textbook and the lecture material. He just reads some slides and explains them very convolutedly. His Friday review quizzes are very tight on time and very challenging. He does not provide feedback or give extra practice questions for the exam.
One of the worst teacher in Western. Avoid at all cost. Exams are crazy hard, you won't pass.
Horrible teacher. Makes timing for weekly graded quizzes insanely tough, there's no way to do well in this course without external resources. He has now changed our final to be online, linear, and added calculation questions to the exam - keep in mind our exam is in 5 days from today. He's a nice guy but doesn't want to see his students do well.
Robert doesn't care about his students at all. Our quizzes are absolutely impossible to complete in the 15 min limit we're given. In light of the recent online exams, Robert has decided to include calculation q's on our exam in 4 days, which he told us wouldn't be tested. He's also giving us half the time, fully proctored, and linear. im sad
At the beginning of the year, he said that the class average each year is around 60%, and I thought he was joking at first. Oh boy how wrong I was, his tests are very difficult and his lectures are so boring and pointless.
Undoubtedly, Pilling is the worst professor in the Social Sci faculty. His lectures are dry and consist of him talking about how he hates wearing masks. When COVID-19 had moved exams online, he decided to cut out exam time by half, include more complex questions, and go as far as telling us to have a 2nd device to join a zoom and have TAs watch us.
Due to the outbreak of the new variant of covid-19, all exams were moved online. Not only he decided to add more complex questions, he cut the exam time in half (from 2 hours to one hour). How are we supposed to do 55 questions in one hour like. Please avoid this course at all cost.
Worst professor ever. After people complained to him about how unfair the final exam format was (55 questions in 60 mins), he decided to make it worse by starting a poll where all of the options are essentially worse. Now, we are ended up doing 60 questions in 60 mins. Avoid this prof at all cost, YOU WONT SURVIVE.
Professor Pilling is one of the most boring speakers I have ever listened to. His lectures are dry, pointless and go over very little material. Might as well read the entire textbook if you actually want to learn something even though it Is a lot of pages to read. His emails are rude, inconsiderate and I don't think he really cares. AVOID!!
Professor Pilling is one of the worst prof's there is! He does not care about his students at all and is very rude and aggressive. He makes this course for students to fail! Please avoid.
Awful prof delivering the course in an awful way. 60+ pages of dry reading per week doesn't help. Does not teach you what he tests you on. I don't think he actually cares about his students and how well they do.
Terrible prof, changed around multiple aspects of the exam, 5 days before the final. Final exam worth 45%- 55 minutes to complete 60 questions, and it's proctored. Overall terrible prof who thinks he's funny when he cracks jokes in lectures.
Decent amount of assigned textbook reading each week, the lectures are useful to support your understanding of the weekly reading. Important to take good notes. Midterm and final were very fair and a high mark in this course is achievable if you stay on top of things and put in the work.
He was so bad, I wanted to give him a zero. But that's not possible. So I give him a 1.
Good guy. Hilarious. The course is not bad.
His course is built to fail students.
So funny, he always has a story to tell. He's very approachable and very knowledgable. It's a lot of learning on your own, but always go see him before class and he will explain things so well.
Very kind professor and truly cares about whether the students walk away learning something. Lots of the first year students want it to be a bird course, when really it's an average difficulty.
God Bless Rob. He has been a really caring, and jolly professor through and through. He is accessible outside of class and based on my experience he sets his student up for success. Read the textbook and attend lectures, and u are good to go. Rob Pilling is a certified G.O.A.T
That was the worst final exam I have ever written in my whole entire life. I worked hard, studied, went to every lecture, and did the readings yet that exam was terrible. I will cry thinking about this course for the remainder of my life. Whatever joy was in my life prior to this final has disappeared, thank you so much for that Robert.
Boring lectures. Exams are difficult even if you know the content. Tries to be funny, but is not.
Inconsiderate prof with boring lectures. Forgets to explain basic concepts/terminology and it was necessary for me to turn to numerous outside sources/youtube to learn concepts. Super petty and punishes you HARSHLY for exams moved online that are out of your control. You can tell teaching is his side job.
He does not clearly answer your questions. There are multiple quizzes that is hard to be successful!!! The group project is fine as long as you understand excel! Overall, do not take his class unless you are desperate
Pilling was a brutal prof through and through. His powerpoints were ancient, his lectures were excruciatingly boring, and his exams were riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, with some questions that were based on a non-relevant piece of information from a video, such as "what colour was the man's tie in ___ video?".
Good Luck trying to get a hold of him via email. I emailed him 5 times before I got a response, also books exam at the last minute so planning for studying is difficult.
The GOAT, funniest prof I've ever had. I recommend taking his course.
Funny guy, will take the extra time to look over graded stuff.
The course was great considering that it was a new course and all the issues had not all been ironed out. The professor did what he could as all the material and assessments were new. Only complaint is that the professor does not know how MAC operating systems work.
This class isn't that hard. People complain about it because they don't like finance/reading textbooks. If you read the textbook and go to lectures, you will get a good mark. The data project is free marks.
Pilling cares about his students; he responds to emails fast, is always available to meet and is open to feedback on graded assignments. His old reviews paint his as a terrible prof but from my experience those who hate him expected his course to be a bird and didn't want to do the work and got bad grades because of it. Dont listen to the reviews.
One the nicest and most genuine guys you will meet. Firts two assignments are easy marks so would recommend completing them on time. Difficult midterm which will bring your mark down but was almost identical to the practice exam he gives. Last assignment is EXTREMELY annoying and took hours to complete. I cried a lot. Group project is easy marks :)
Professor Pilling is a great teacher and gets an unfair rating because of the course he teaches. It took me halfway through the year to realize I liked Pilling and just didn't like the course. MOS is a dreadful course but Pilling walks in everyday with a smile and joke. If you are lost in the course go to his office hours he is very helpful.
Midterm was unreasonably hard and designed to bring everyone's grades down. Stuff learned on assignments wasn't on exams, very memorization heavy you will not learn much
Amazing as a person and funny as a lecturer. Gets a bad rep because of how content heavy the course is. The midterm is deliberately used to pull the class average down. Assignments are free grades and same with the final project. If you are stuck on the assignments just go to Rob's office hours and he will do it for you.
Lots of people don't like Mr. Pilling because of his course but he is genuinely such a good person. If you read the textbook and participate in class it's very possible to do good in this course. It seems he genuinely loves teaching and I know he gets a bad rep but I think he is an awesome professor.
Pilling seemed very nice, after a while he made inappropriate comments to some of the girls in the class. In addition to being creepy, the midterm was ridiculous. Very few people passed and the average was a 50. Most people did well with the access project however he brought many people's grades down 20%. Finally, the course wasn't described well.
He is not that bad, to be honest. However, exams could be tricky and requires tons of time studying outside the class time. But remember, tax is fun.
He tries to be the best support in class and during office hours. One important thing to keep in mind: His exams rewards heavily on hard work.
He is a very nice man. Highly recommend.
To be fair he is a nice guy and generally a caring prof. But his class is wierd: he expect you to know everything and finish all the problems before coming to class, and obviously nobody did that. He knews that but don't really give anyone a hard time about it and ended up doing a semi-lecture semi-problem solving class everytime.
Honstley for this class in general everyone says you have to work hard study hard but imma be honest i deepseek sumerized all the lecture slides 2 hours before the exam, forgot to buy the textbook, and got a 74% when the avg was like 50-60 (or lower i forget). As far as piling goes hes so understanding if u need extension he'll give it,.
