He was so boring!! i hate his class and he put me to sleep every class.
I like the class, it's fun and he explains stuff well =)

Class was pretty simple. He posts notes, but not great, better to go to class. Really responsive teacher and homework took a little time, but easy A's. Definatly recommend the teacher.
The best professor I had yet. Attended the lectures and did not read the text and still managed an A. He's straight forward. Makes econ more interesting. SMART guy
Possibly my favorite class freshman year. Not only is Pollin incredibly insightful and smart, he keeps his lectures interesting, cites relevant examples from everyday life, and keeps student participation up. If you can, take an Econ class with him.

Great teacher, great teaching. Missed a lot if not taken his class.
Pollin knew his stuff. He is a BRILLIANT guy, very full of himself due to how much of the material he wrote himself. Class is interesting but has boring sections. Attendance not necessary but helps. pay attention in class, you'll pass. I didn't open the textbook once
Pollin knows what he's talking about. He's been in this industry for years. I like the class and I like him. However, if you're looking for an easy A don't look here. The quizes are all online, but they are still pretty tricky. Mid-year was okay, I got a 75. Overall, I'd say take this class if you're willing to put the time in to work and study.
Ill admit, he is a smart teacher. But he is extremely liberal which affects his teaching. The books your have to get are biased. However, putting that aside, you have 5 online quizzes during the semester. As long as you pay attention and read the notes you should be fine
Pollin is a smart dude. Take this class if you need a GenEd cuz its really a simple course. Macro is made easy by this guy since he knows how to explain it to students. Thumbs up.
This guy is VERY smart but he hires the worst TA's (most don't speak English well). Not much grading throughout the year. 5 online quizzes (that are surprisingly tricky) a midterm (very easy), a final, and a final term paper. The term paper is only 5 pages. If you do the work from the beginning it should be an A. But most are too lazy to read books
Very difficult if you have never taken econ before. Online quizzes are very hard and unfair due to technology mistakes. Then he does not change grades after admitting they were unfair. Tests are decent but this teacher is much too smart for an intro class. He expects you to know more then he teaches because he is an actual economist on the side
Hes a very smart guy, but isnt very helpful. Online quizzes are extremely hard and it doesnt help that there are technology mistakes. When brought up in class he didnt care. TA's are not helpful at all. Wouldnt recommend this as a gen ed. Tons of readings!
Overall, I would recommend taking Econ104 with Pollin. He is a VERY smart guy and is way more of an economist than a professor. His exams are taken right from the study guide which is nice, but the online quizzes are somewhat difficult.. If you are willing to put in the work, you should get an A or B
Pollin was way too smart to be an Econ 104 professor. Quizzes were a bit too hard, but he dumbed down the midterm and final a lot. One term paper, but you write it on whatever you want and the TA's take it easy on grading. Overall happy with Pollin for 104.
Pollin is an EXCELLENT economics professor. In comparison to other 104 professors he is easily the best one to choose. 5 Short writing assignments due every other week (400-600 words) which are easy and pass/revise/fail. Midterm and final are easy and straight forward if you review the study guide you will get an A.
Bob Pollin is an incredible professor and a very interesting man. Son of Abe Pollin, the owner of the NBA's Washington Wizards. He is a nationally recognized economist and wrote our textbook on economics. Class is interesting and relates to todays news. Have to write a 500 word paper every 2 weeks (easier than you think) and exams are easy.
All books are in library so you don't have to buy them. Easy papers due every other week. Going to review sessions before tests guarantee an A on both midterm and final. I really liked the fact that he was VERY knowledgeable on Economics and answered EVERY question easily. Best Macro Econ professor for gen ed or Isenberg
He really knows his stuff, and he is very impressive. But he is also incredibly liberal to the point that it can get annoying. Class isn't mandatory but discussion is there is one midterm and final and 5, 1 pg papers and a 4 page single spaced final research paper
This class is super easy, there was a short paper every other week and you can either get a pass or revise and you can keep revising until you pass, and he gives study guides for the exams and the topics from the exam come straight from the study guide. It's really straightforward.
I wasn't a super diligent student for this class, and I regret it because I could have taken so much away from it. Go to lectures and discussions, do the short (400-600 word) essays every couple of weeks, and you'll dominate this class. Phenomenal professor who really knows his stuff.
Pollin is an awesome professor. He uses his experience as an economist to teach. Attend lectures, read, and do the short papers. Attend review sessions and discussions. Doing so will put you on track for an A. On top of this the material is really interesting. This class was great and inspired me to get a second major in Econ.
Fantastic teacher and made me genuinely interested in economics. Definitely a must take especially if you have to for business anyway.
Pollin is awesome. Great teacher, explains everything clearly. Make sure to do at least the majority of the reading as they help you with the papers in tests. Would recommend.
Pollin is really smart and very accomplished. His class was really easy; very writing based. My TA was not helpful but if you do the readings and go through lecture slides you'll do fine!
Although the material its self is quite interesting, Professor Pollin teaches as if everyone in the room is an economist. There is quite a lot of reading which you have to keep on top of because if you fall behind it's incredibly hard to catch back up.
Not set up like a traditional macro class which makes it way easier to learn the material. The only work is 6 short papers although I wish they were worth more in your grade because you have to depend on your exams. But exams are easy if you know the study guide. Best teacher for macroeconomics.
This was a professor who knew his stuff. Would highly recommend him for this class. He does tend to plug his own book (part of syllabus) a little too often. Most of the textbooks he prescribed were used quite rarely, if ever.
Pollin's macroecon class was one of the most disorganized, unhelpful, and difficult classes I've taken at UMass. His tests ask questions never covered or clarified in class and his TA's couldn't be more unhelpful. You're taking a gamble by enrolling in this class, if you don't have to take I'd suggest stay as far away as possible!
When TA's aren't speaking throughout the entire mid-term, Bob Pollin is a good guy and a decent professor. Knowledgeable and humorous. Problem? Very disorganized. The lectures don't feel helpful and it's a very do-it-all-yourself kind of course. Exams are tough because of such a short time to write essays in 50 minutes. TA's are abysmal. All awful
So, here's my problem with this class. It's not that Robert Pollin is a horrible teacher, it's the fact that he assigns a ridiculous amount of papers that cannot bring your paper up-- they can only lower it. Also, he makes you buy 4 textbooks (one of them is his own) and assigns around 100 pages of reading a night. DO NOT TAKE.
Lectures are extremely boringuseless to go to. Short papers are easy but don't do anything good for your grade, they only bring it down if you don't do them. Also, 70% of the grade is made up from the final and term paper which is ridiculous. Overall wouldn't recommend this class.
This class is a pretty easy class. As long as you go to class, you will do fine. He is probably the most clear economic professor you will ever have and his lessons are very interesting. You don't have to be an economics major do to well in the class. You do have papers to write but they're only 400-600 words.
I took pollin because he had good reviews, however as the semester comes to an end i regret it. He assigns short papers every other week that can't help your grade, only hurt it. Two tests and a paper are your ONLY grades and heavily weighted. Lectures are boring and the powerpoint notes are not always helpful. Go to class and do the study guides!!
70% of your grade is determined by the last day of the semester. Think about that. His system is egregonious and the TA's aren't helpful. Pollin is kind and clear, but boring and his PowerPoints are useless. All you have to do is go to his exam review sessions for the midterm and final and you'll be okay. Class structure is just all over the place.
Although your grade is based on 2 tests and a paper, it is very easy to get an A in this class. Pollin's lectures are incredibly helpful and in general he's a very good lecturer. The tests are easy because they are based completely off a very detailed study guide that Pollin provides. If you pay attention and study getting an A should be no problem
Your grade really depends on your TA. My TA was a wicked tough grader on the 6 passrevise papers and we all had to revise them frequently, and though we were basically given the test on a study guide, and went to the review sessions with Pollin, we still got unnecessarily low scores on the exams. Choose wisely, and leave if they seem rough.
Pollin told you what you had to do and learn and there were no surprises. The review sessions are "not structured" where you have to ask the questions but I went to both the midterm and final review session and got A+ on both tests from simply reviewing the answers he gave in the session to his study guide. The university is lucky to have him.
He always struck me as kind of full of himself. That said, great teacher. Knew his stuff, grading was straightforward and if you made the effort, you'll be fine.
One of the better classes I've taken here. Pollin really explains the material well and provides a lot of real-world information which made the class that much more interesting. Gives you a study guide that is practically the test and gives bi-weekly 4-600 word papers, no other hw 30% final and 25% term paper though. Great teacher, highly recommend
Bob Pollin is kind of a bore in lecture and he put me to sleep plenty of times. I barely listen during lecture and you could get away with not going because he puts the notes online. There are plenty of short mini-papers for this class, which were a bit annoying but they were easy. Definitely go to discussion. I think I learned more from my TA.
1. assigns 6 short papers that are worth 20 percent of your grade ... a lot of essay topics can be found online from interviews with Pollin HIMSELF, super easy never took me longer than an hour ... assign ONE paper every other week 2. Theres one long paper .. worst bit of the class 3. GO TO HIS REVIEW SESSIONS, gives every single answer there
Pollin's class is not a traditional econ class. It deals a lot with the social and environmental aspects of econ which I really liked. He gives a review session for the mid-term and final and it is everything needed on the tests. Overall it was a great class and I would highly recommend.
I was not fond of this class at all and I recommend that you pick a different macro economics professor if you can. The lectures were not really helpful and the 6 1-2pg papers assigned over the course of the semester didnt really help me out in regards to reinforcing the course material. Tests were pretty easy though. I just didnt learn alot.
Great professor, makes the material more interesting. Focus on going to each class, getting papers in on time, and going to the review sessions. He gives you the answer to all the test questions at the review. 10/10 would recommend.
Very liberal professor who often downgrades the other view and many class readings are very one sided.
liberal professor who knows his stuff but you have no chance of passing any assignments if you disagree with any of his points. just write essay's agreeing with him and you'll pass the class for sure. definitely full of himself and promotes his books/multiple articles a little too much
didn't have to go to lecture much. do the short writing and study for mid term and final and you can get an A easily.
Pollin's class can be intimidating at first, but he knows what he is talking about and is passionate about his students understanding the material in a way that pertains to real life. You will get a concrete understanding of economics in the US and globally if you go to all the lectures. If you give it your all, it will be the best course you take.
1 paper every 2 weeks in discussion, go to your TA's office hours for help. Big paper at the end too, but I dod mine like 4 hours the night before and still got an A. Exams seemed hard when I took them, but I still got a good grade. Material is super understandable and def go to the review session, he covers everything. Easy A with a little work
Good professor who is obviously intelligent. The book he assigns has ideas that vary slightly from his beliefs. But in assigning this book, he gives you different viewpoints on Economic matters and allows you to develop your own thoughts. Take notes, he doesn't post his PowerPoints and read; there aren't that many readings.
He's a smart guy but is obviously biased. Some inconsistencies (like he doesn't force you to buy his book, and then assigns readings from it...), some homework links lead nowhere, most of the readings aren't relevant to the class, your grade depends on your TA. Class discusses current events which is better than some 104 classes.
Pollin is alright. He definitely feels a certain way about certain economic policies and that comes across, sometimes to the point where he fails to show us the other side. He's vague. This class is very conceptual, and you don't really even need much of a grip on the topics to get an A. He know's what he's talking about, but doesn't show much else
Overall great teacher. Robert knows his materials, just has a difficult time delivering them to keep a large class entertained (can be boring). But if you're into econ, definitely take his class. His materials are conceptual and enlightening and will get you thinking. Not too many papers and tests and they're easy.
Such a good guy. Really knows his stuff and I don't like the subject of econ but I really enjoyed his lectures. attendance isn't mandatory but i would strongly recommend going to class, it helps with the short papers.
Depends on the TA you get, some are tough graders and they are the ones basically grading everything like your papers and your exam scores. The work is fairly easy, but lots of mini papers. The exams are also easy and he basically tells you the answers in his review sessions, except they can be graded harshly depending on the TA you get.
There's a paper each week so get ready to write. Grade completely depends on your TA, whether or not they're an easy grader. I thought papers were graded fairly but exams were not based off of the same grading at all on the essay portions-they were much harder graders and didn't do as well as I thought
such a good professor and very worth going to his lectures. he knows what hes talking about. the midterm we had had questions that were exactly on the study guide, and there is only an assignment due every other week which can be completed quickly
Definetly take prof pollin if you are going to take econ 104. His lectures were amazing, really cares and is well versed about what he is teaching. Lectures werent mandatory but because theyre so good you dont mind going. Discussions were mandatory. EASY short paper every other week. Was so well prepared for midterm just by going to class.
Exams are a big part of your grade. Only have a midterm and a final. 6 writing assignments throughout the semester but there is a term paper. Lots of readings every week but it is fairly easy as long as you keep up.
Most boring teacher of all time. I stopped going to lectures because the guy always veers off topic. I just couldn't learn from his old-school style of teaching. Class is easy only assignments are the 6 short papers. He also has no clue how to use technology, so it is extremely difficult to hear anything on the zooms or recorded lectures.
Pollin is a great econ professor, as someone who isn't fond of econ he provided a great learning environment. Even though the lectures can get boring there's only a midterm and final exam, both of which he gives the study guide which is near identical to the tests. Also 6 short assignments and a term paper. I def suggest Pollin for macro!
Lectures right to the point and easy to understand. No math or graphs, just broad overview of relevant info so that by the end you have a good idea of the overall economic state of the US. Homework is 6 500 word papers that are based on lectures. Final+midterm also easy. Lectures zoom recorded but you really should watch them. Loved this class.
Not great class. Depends on TA. Graded badly
This professor is ok. It is all up to your TA and whether he likes you or not. I am not joking. On the Bi- Weekly assignments (6 of them) I answered the question word for word with the correct amount of words and my ta didn't great me well.
Pollin's class depends on what you want to put into it. He is a very caring, smart professor who truly cares about the topic. Emphasis on current events, not concrete topics, if you communicate with TA's, keep up with readings and pay attention in class. GO TO REVIEW SESSIONS, which gives you answers to tests.
Extremely confused by the grading in this course. It is completely dependent on which TA you have. I had Adrina and was graded extremely harshly, meanwhile my peers who had Raven received extensions for every short paper until Sundays instead of Fridays, and they all received 100s for participation because he did not take attendance. Avoid!
Textbooks cost money and they are hard to find online through other means. Otherwise, the class is very engaging. Pollin is very clear about his political prescriptions but invites challenge to them in the essays. There's a lot of writing in this class, but the essays can be quite interesting or fun if you care about economics.
For the most part I enjoyed Professor Pollin's class. He has quite an extensive knowledge of macro, so I found that I learned a significant amount from his class. As far as my TA goes, Kayode was very helpful and informative, but a bit of a harsh grader. There are multiple different writing assignments so get ready to work.
The grading in this class is not ideal. You are graded on 8 things for the entire semester. The grading is based on your TA, so if you have a bad TA, then you will suffer. Tests only have a few questions, so it is easy to not do well. TA wanted us to learn and getting a good grade would be the outcome, but with harsh grading, this is impossible.
HE IS TERRIBLE AND HIS TAs ARE EVEN WORSE! Take 104 w/ Dolenc not Pollin. So much reading for this class. Lectures are just reading off the slides. TAs are terrible and don't even speak English and will show up an hour late to their own office hours. No homework so you really don't know anything. Only graded on midterm, final, and 1600 word paper.
His midterm exam is a 1-to-1 copy of what is given on his study guide which makes exam easier. Graded by few things, bi-weekly essay that TA grades. My TA Duo Xu was good at teaching and lenient grader for the essays. I have heard horror stories on other TA's. As long as you pay attention in lecture and discussion, you're mostly good to go.
Pollin is a good teacher but my god the grading is a complete mess. He still uses Moodle when the entire school is on canvas. We are at the end of the semester, and I have no clue what my grade is. 75% of your grade is 3 harshly graded items, the midterm (20% of your grade), the final (30% of your grade), and the term paper (25% of your grade).
Pollin is a good professor, papers every couple of weeks, two exams, if you have Kishore as your TA switch out of it because he is terrible at grading and way too harsh for an intro level class, he should not be a TA so do not take it with Kishore as your TA
Good professor, really organized. Exams are not bad. If you had Prof. Long for Econ 103 before this, you know what a breeze it is in comparison. My only issue is the weekly papers. We are given the "rubric" after turning in the paper, so it can be hard to know what is expected of you. But, if you have a good TA, the papers are a nice grade boost
Lectures are boring and he just reads off slides. VERY few assignments, 6 papers, a midterm, and a final, all on paper. The first 2 papers that are submitted are only pass/fail and not worth any credit toward final grade. His TAs are not very helpful and most of them do not speak English and they can be very harsh graders.
like lowk not terrible. exams are lit a copy of study guide. TAs could be varied. sophie was great imo. the papers are not bad, they're a grade boost. i stopped going to lectures towards end of sem and still did fine. a little worried about grade transparency bc its one day before grades are due and I still don't know what I got on my final.
I thought his lectures were interesting, clearly very intelligent, and all the topics felt very relevant to real world issues. I know a lot found him boring, everyone in class was on their laptops. You will also never know what your grade is unless you ask your TA, hopefully he also uses Canvas next year. Study for the exams and you'll be fine.
Never went to class, as long as you go to the review sessions before exams and do study guides (they are the same questions as the exam) you will get an A. Lots of writing - biweekly 400-600 word papers and grading is dependent on if you have a good TA or not, go into their office hours so they like you and give you better grades!
55% of the course went ungraded until the final day, so you won't know your grade for all of the semester. Biweekly papers that are 400-600 words long, but they're not hard if your TA gives guidelines. Class and grading heavily TA influenced. Whether you go to class or not doesn't matter, just go to the weekly discussion sections and exam reviews.
Pollin comes off a little stiff but he's nice enough and gives interesting lectures if economics is your thing. My TA was Kishore and he was thorough in discussions and graded mostly fair. It's annoying they don't keep up with grades throughout the semester and it's writing intensive. Mostly a good class, you get what you put in it.
Pollin on his own is very knowledgeable, passionate, and down-to-earth. Lectures just read off the slides. Study guide for midterm AND final are exactly what the exam would be. Look over the midterm study guide for the final too. Very TA-dependent, had Shiyuan recommend office hours for specific grading. Very little grade transparency.
This class and your grade will rely heavily on which TA you land from the start. Out of respect I won't name drop. What Robert Pollin will fail you tell you is that he has his own grading rubric which does not benefit GPA, and is not in the syllabus. There will be no issue dodging points based on facts as well, I recommend Econ 103 over Econ 104.
Class was alright. Felt the TA graded a little harshly. Downside I would say is that to end the class there is a term paper and a final exam which I felt was dumb. Attendance not required but during discussion it is sometimes taken (only if like nobody shows up though). Was able to do everything WITHOUT the textbook.
