Very hard professor, moves at a very fast past. Easy to get lost/confused.
He moves at a fast pace. If you don't attend lecture you can't get lost quickly. His tests are pretty difficult because you really have to apply yourself. He's a funny guy, but the tests are killer.
Teacher had really entertaining lectures which held the attention of the class. The tests are much harder than what you expect from how easy he makes it seem in the lectures.
Class moves amazingly fast--if you miss one lecture you're way behind in the material. The material makes sense in class, but he doesn't cover the detail in lecture that he expects on tests. Really funny guy and I don't regret taking him, but VERY difficult to keep up with the amazingly large number and variety of practice problems.
he's funny, except he goes off on tangents and lectures as if he is lecturing to chem grad students. lectures are unclear and confusing...just read the book. the first midterm is the easiest, but it gets progressively harder. ta's are very useful and do their best to make sure you pass the class
Lectures are interesting, they are mandatory because he goes over quiz-type problems, although they are hard to understand. should preview chapters. First quiz was extremely hard, but ch. 1 was difficult in general. All other midterms and quizzes were do-able. Final was fair. Curve is very generous. I had a C- and it became a B-.
moves really fast.
He moves really fast. Be prepared to keep up with lecture notes and corresponding chapters in the book. Also, powerpoints on webct are also helpful. Midterms and final are very hard, but curve is generous. He expects you to already have a background with chem, so you don't want to fall too far behind. He is intimidating, too.
i don't know what you guys are talking about when you guys say his curve is generous. at first, it was only 85% to get an A, & then he lowered the cutoff to an 83%, yet only 11% of a 570 people class got an A? Also a 50-71 was a C, so 54% of the class ended up with one. The wide range of getting a C is ridiculous & unfair compared to the A&B ranges
i didn't like how he taught the class. i always fell asleep during his lectures, and the TAs were no good. i do have to admit though that he has decent notes SOMETIMES. the quizzes are hard and every version of the test has a different level of difficulty/easiness. i don't recommend taking Chem 6A with him.
One of the most horrible professor that I have ever taken. Loads you with so much information and is so unclear about what he's talking about. He talks very quickly and he TRIES to explain what he's talking about BUT basically he just makes you more confused then you already were. I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT recommend taking his class.
Clearly he knows what he's talking about, but that doesn't always carry through to people understanding. It's very likely you won't understand immediately just by coming to class, so be prepared to work to make yourself understand.
he schedules his midterms for 7:30 in the morning when lecture is at 8. who knows why
awesome teacher. very clear to understand and entertaining.
Pomeroy definitely has a strong grasp on chemistry concepts but his tests/quizzes do NOT reflect what he teaches. There are curveballs on each exam that leave most feeling lost even if you do all the hw and feel you really understand the content.
Dude he knows the stuff but he doesnt know how to teach it. And for all of you who think he is a good professor you guys are biased cuz u got a good grade. He is really hard and his tests and quizzes absolutely do not reflect wat he taught in class. He thinks he explains clearly but a lot of the students come out more confused.
He's a very good professor. He teaches well and is enthusiastic about the material. His tests are not easy. Studying will certainly help. Do the homework. I didn't go to lectures that much. I got a B, I wasn't satisfied. The material is easy, just keep track of the homework and stuff. He's definitely a good professor!
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER unless you like learning all the material on your own and then trying to apply it.
He uses the chalkboard to lecture: kept me interested and went at a manageable pace. What he goes over in lecture shows up on tests and quizzes, but there were a few things that he skimmed over in lecture and ended up being major components in tests. Do your hw! Quizzes and tests were fair, otherwise.
Personally, his tests and quizzes reflect the information he taught in class; he didn't know how to teach it right. His lectures put me to sleep almost every time. He goes way too fast and doesn't make the class interesting at all. Also, he doesn't give plus or minus grades, only the straight letter.
He's not a good teacher. His lectures are boring. I had to learn everything on my own.
He puts material on his exams that are not in the text book nor in lecture notes. His excuse for doing so was that we should already know it. What he does not take into consideration is that people forget stuff and he lacks review material. He gets a kick out of making things harder than they have to be. Trust me DONT TAKE HIM!!!
Prof. Pomeroy is an awesome guy and an excellent teacher! If you actually do your work and attend lecture you should be fine. His quizzes/midterm/final are fair and so is his curve, but slacking will not give you the grade you want.
Great guy, good prof! Best Chem teacher I had by far. Interesting and energetic. Quizes were easy. Midterms were easy. Final was harder, study for it. Mostly because midterms are not long but final was a lot longer. I recommend
Skip's a likable guy who knows his stuff, but he talks a lot about what he expects us to know but doesn't seem to have a plan on how to get us there. Yeah Skip, you can do it. Now, teach us. Also, taking notes in his class is nearly impossible. He talks too fast, doesn't repeat things, and gets sidetracked. I wanna like him but I'm afraid for my GPA
I took the summer class, so it seemed a little fast. I had no prior knowledge of chemistry, but was able to keep up with some work. He's passionate about what he teaches, and very knowledgeable. I enjoyed our talks during office hours.
i started to take skip in the summer and left a hard review. he does talk too fast but he really gave me an intuition about thermodynamics that has stuck with me way past the class. his tests seemed impossible at the time but they made me strong. good job, skip.
oh ... didn't mean to leave skip a 2 for helpfulness in my last post. he was quite helpful.
Skip is a pretty good professor, he knows the material well... its just he teaches really fast!! you have to keep up on all of the information. STUDY HARD! Make sure u read the sections before you go into class
GREAT professor. Starts off the lecture by writing 4-5 bullet points of the main topics he wants to cover, then goes off of his knowledge for the entire section, molding the lecture to what he believes the class doesn't know/needs to know. He encourages questions in and out of class. His grading policy was fair, and ended up helping everyone.
this is the worst class ever! I spent a LOT of time studying for midterms and I definitely know the stuff but he makes it a priority to try and trick you. The TA's are also terrible they can barely speak English... I usually come out of this class more confused then when I came in and I HATE the clicker. I'm probably going to fail this class :(
This was a hard class considering it was for nonmajors. I went into it thinking it wasnt going to be bad- but it was. I agree with the last person's comments- i studied a good deal and still did about average. the TA's were useless. Skip teaches this class like his 6A class which isn't right for people who don't care about chem. avoid this class.
DON'T TAKE HIM!! Not only is he a prick, but he's impossible to follow. I had to learn everything on my own. I passed with a B- but that was with the help of tutors. Seriously, pass on this guy.
DON'T TAKE HIM! He goes over everything so fast in lecture that you can barely keep up. Most of the test has nothing to do with the lecture so you basically learn everything on your own. The average on the 1st midterm was 48... 85% is an A so everyone "failed". I think the grades say more about his teaching than our ability to learn.
I wouldn't take him again. I passing the class, but I don't understand anything that he's taught. Seeing as this is for my major I'm going to take the class again with someone that actually teaches. Take someone else.
I don't know why he has such a bad rating but he's AWESOME! A funny guy and explains his material clearly. His tests are pretty easy if you've read the book and went to the lectures. Do the homework problems and go to review sessions. Not too hard to get an A. He also drops a test. Best professor I've had so far
Well... what can I say? His tests are hard. Averages sit around 47%, though he will add points or give some help if the entire class is having troubles. His lectures are interesting, and he is entertaining. The major issues I have are that he will try to trick you on tests and the homework isn't collected/assigned very clearly. Not bad overall.
I forgot to mention one key issue... Know how everyone has time to finish tests, and usually people leave early after completing? Yeah... not with this guy. No one finishes early, and everyone struggles to finish on time. Either you know your stuff 100% or you will lose massive points due to time constraints. That's why averages are so low.
His lectures are interesting and he keeps the students laughing. Although he speaks very fast due to the nature of how short summer courses are, so students struggle to grasp everything. His tests are fair, although the amount of time given is what causes averages to be so low. Other than that I would recommend taking him if you want to learn.
Professor Pomeroy may be a fine performer, but as a teacher he needs work. you will probably need outside help and he's not great at explaining the material. He's okay if you see him after class, but if you ask a question in class expect to feel stupid. If you plan on being "sick" rethink it, and don't let his charm distract you from the material.
He's a great teacher, but not an easy teacher. He really gives you a thorough understanding of the material; the course is lightning fast-paced, however, and his tests are tough. Take his class if you really want to master chemistry, but just don't count on getting a good grade...
One of my favorite professors. He expects a lot out of his students but is very reasonable on his test problems. We get a lot of practice problems and if you do the problems there isn't really any surprises on the tests. His lectures are very interesting too. Never really lost my attention.
I dropped 6C with Johnson in the Spring, so I was definitely scared by Skip's poor reviews. Fear not. His tests are incredibly easy compared to Johnson's. Unfortunately his lectures, while entertaining, are pretty much worthless. Do the homework, skim the book, go to lecture (just so you aren't caught unawares), and you should pull the A with ease.
Great teacher, really knows how to tie up the whole CHEM series with real world examples and enthusiasm! Made chemistry fun, but do the work and GO TO OFFICE HRS! sooo nice
I took Skip during Summer Session. He is a wonderful professor! His lectures are interesting, informative and stress conceptual understanding. Although the class was fast paced, the weekly exams kept everything on track. Take him if you want to actually learn chemistry.
Great class. Easily one of the best teachers I've had at UCSD. I would highly recommend him for Gen. Chem. You will have no problem transitioning into 6C and beyond.
Skip is a great professor. He does move quickly, but the information is clear and he knows it well. Go to office hours if you have questions, he's very friendly. Review his lecture slides, lots of material from the tests are on those. I can see why he may not be the best 6 series professor, but he's great for chem majors or upper div students.
This professor is AWESOME. Genuinely cares about your success. Grades on improvement throughout the course. Relates subject to real world things that you can understand. Overall A+ prof, the best professor I've ever had at UCSD, hands down.
Amazing professor! Is very clear on explaining concepts and making sure you understand the material being present. He's really big on understanding the all the conceptual material rather than the calculations. But I really enjoyed his class and would recommend him to anyone.
Really great professor. He is really into conceptual understanding so his tests are concept based and don't have all those pointless complex calculations. Really helpful , no nonsense prof. You will learn a lot. Highly recommend. Learned more in his class than I did with other chem professors who were super difficult.
Great teacher. Gives good advice and feedback when you ask him questions. But YOU need to go up to him and ask- he doesn't just come to you. He's passionate about what he does.
Also took Skip for CHEM149. Would highly recommend for upper div chem classes. Clearly knows his stuff and is passionate about what he does. If you take the time to go to office hours, he is very helpful and has a lot of wisdom to impart about a broad variety of topics in the chemistry industry and beyond. One of my favorite professors at UCSD.
One of my favorite professors on campus! He expects a lot from his students but he won't leave you in the dark. Great lectures, great at explaining things, always available to help, very specific about what you need to know. Basically no curve balls - just put in the work and you'll get a decent grade.
The tests are of fair difficulties. Would certainly take again.
Lets you know the first day that he has every intention of failing as many students as possible. Laughs at the idea of anyone getting an A on any of his labs. Not interested in helping students, have no idea why he teaches. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend taking anyone else. Really mean, rude, unprofessional, and not willing to help students.
Puts questions on the final from gen chem expecting you to remember, without reviewing it at all. He lectures well, but man are the labs in this class graded tough. Expect to never get an A on your reports, but at least the curve is heavy. Go to lecture because it prepares you, and set up spreadsheets beforehand to make things go smoothly in lab.
Skip is by far the best prof I've had in college. He cares so much about students and just wants people to show an interest in the subject and he'll bend over backwards to help. Super interesting and hilarious. Tells funny stories to try and help you remember the analytic techniques which is awesome.
His Analytical course was the most interesting class I've taken so far. It's seawater-centered and enviromenr centered which is always interesting. His lab reports are done in pairs and there is no pre-labs so that was awesome. Labs are kind of boring but the lectures are awesome to sit in. He is kind if is intimidating in office hours though.
Pomeroy's tests are reflective of what he taught during lecture. There are some conceptual questions but if you do the homework and some extra practice problems, the tests aren't that bad. The only thing is that he'll teach topics that supposed to be for later courses/tests but won't tell you. But he does have "bucket points" which boost your grade
Professor Pomeroy is amazing, he is hilarious and such a good teacher.
(Took class online) Lab reports were due weekly, he answers lots of questions during office hours so it was relatively straightforward. TA is responsible for all lab report grading. Must put in consistent effort. Final was not on anything we learned in the 10 weeks. LOTS of general chem calculation questions, not reflective of material learned.
For the online quarter, professor Pomeroy just uploaded last year's (Fall 2019) videos of him lecturing in a lecture hall. 90% of our grade was on exams while the rest was in online homework. There are 5 exams, and you can drop one exam score. As long as you do the homework and read, the tests are not too difficult. He also provides extra credit.
The lab was in an online format with lab reports due weekly. It was mostly Excel work since he provides randomized data so going to OH helped with that. The grades on your lab reports mostly depended on your TA. The concepts weren't that hard but you had to learn on your own time since he doesn't lecture and the final/practice was gen chem heavy.
Pomeroy is a great professor. His pre-recorded lectures were very clear and office hours during our scheduled lecture time were useful to ask any questions we had. The homework had many questions similar to what showed up on the tests and it was helpful to practice with. Need to put in a lot of effort to keep up with this face-paced class.
As during the pandemic, all the lab was asynchronous. He did synchronous office hours where we went over excel and the concept. He is great at explaining and makes sure you understand material.I would say the class is unorganized online so in the first few weeks it was hard to adjust. In terms of lab reports, it honestly depends on the TA you get.
His lectures were hard to follow, he gave all exams on Saturday mornings, his lectures didn't follow the textbook, and he didn't round.
I took chem H my 2nd year of HS. This course is basically review however its been years since that class, not to mention covid, so this this was my most difficult class this quarter. Study 2-4 hrs a day! He is passive aggressive. Lectures as if we know what we are doing?! Has 3 exams sat mornings. HW every week due sat. Few quizzes graded harshly.
His words are so confusing that you can barely understand. Homework is much more than other professors in the same course. He thinks he is humorous but it actually makes no sense.
The worst teacher I've ever had. He spends 20/50 minutes of lecture degrading students. His philosophy in teaching is that you should care more about learning than getting good grades - which makes no sense in the US school system. Hard tests, hard homework, & terrible lectures. Speaks in jargon & assumes you know the content.
He is passionate about chemistry, but I thought his style of teaching just made everything confusing. I took AP Chem and stopped going to class after the first week because he confused me. Definitely better profs to take for Chem 6A. He also sometimes talks down to students and makes them feel stupid for asking simple questions.
His lectures consist mostly of him going over slides briefly (kind of expecting that you know the stuff on them already), and makes it tough to finish all the notes you need to write. You are going to have to watch podcasts of all lectures to finish your notes. Passive-aggressive. Not entirely bad, but if you've got other choices, pick those.
Professor Pomeroy is really difficult in my opinion. He has a good understanding of the material but his teaching style just didn't click with me I guess. I had to teach myself entirely from the textbook. His explanations and power points we just really hard to follow in my opinion and lecture's weren't clear to me. Definitely a lot of work.
In comparison to other profs teaching 6A, he assigns way more hw that has nothing to do with the test & is beyond our knowledge. Says it's for the chem majors who need xtra practice but every1 has to suffer? No cheat sheets on tests, tests are way longer than other profs, content is way more detailed & HARD. Srsly ruined chem for me. He's also rude
He is not a horrible professor he just makes the class way harder than any other chem 6a class here. I wouldn't recommend him if you are not a chem major, or similar. I think I would have valued his high level teaching more if I continued with the chem series. Also he gives 3 midterms and a fat final so get ready to take some intense exams.
He speeds through lectures like you already know the material and then wastes 20+ minutes talking about something irrelevant. Save yourself the headache and take this class with a different prof.
Lectures are recorded so you can view them at your leisure and he is good about remembering to turn the mic on. He's fun to listen to, knowledgeable, and very approachable. He gives a ton of resources on canvas, final was generally reflective of the material covered.
He gets bad reviews but is a strong lecturer/prof. I've always hated chem and barely passed AP, but I kind of love it now thanks to Pomeroy. GO TO OFFICE HOURS and actually read the textbook. Seems obvious but I didn't at first and got a C on the first midterm, but I ended the class with an A-. He gives extra credit and drops the lowest test.
This class is unnecessarily difficult. Although he is a decent lecturer, he assigns an absurd amount of homework compared to the other Chem 6A professors. His midterms and final are brutal (3 midterms with 1 dropped). He does assign extra credit which is amazing, but it takes a very long time to finish. Take a different prof if possible.
Professor Pomeroy is a great person, but a horrible teacher. He goes extremely fast during lectures as if we should already know what he is going over, his midterms are question heavy compared to other chem 6a professors and his final was extremely long compared to others. His homework was 30-40 questions weekly. Take any other professor.
Professor Pomeroy aka Skip is a wonderful teacher and lecturer. He ensures you understand foundational concepts. Connects material and conveys it in a digestible manner. It helps rewatching lectures after going over slides. He is a VERY fair grader - drops lowest of 3 midterms, with a much better margin for an A or B than other professors.
He goes through lectures very fast but is clear about what will be on the exams. Expect to put in time & effort. Utilize his notes + jot down what he said helpful on exam. Do the buckets: reinforce the concepts + good way to practice + EC boost. The 1st exam may seem to be easy but beware it has the lowest average. Exams are mostly concept-based.
Professor Pomeroy's tests are difficult, but his lectures are great and explain concepts very well. Try to go to his office hours if you need some help! He also gives extra credits so make sure to do them if you can (it bumped my A- to A)!
Prepare for class by reading ahead and you'll understand his lectures, or have previous knowledge on chemistry (quantum numbers, molarity, etc.).Grade is determined by final, 2 quizzes, and 3 midterms, which are difficult even if you study. Getting A's are manageable, but the class caters towards students who are good at testing.
Pomeroy teaches at an overwhelmingly fast pace that's often very confusing, especially if you only took basic chemistry in high school. He skims over material, assuming everyone already knows it. How well you do is mostly dependent on your TA. However, he has a generous grading scale offers extra credit (but it is very hard and time consuming).
The lectures were recorded and easily available
He could be good or bad depend on how much you want to learn Chem. His tests might contain questions that you never done before, but you can do them use "creativity." The TAs are really helpful! Also those extra credits do take you a long time to do (maybe about 200 questions need to do for the entire quarter), but they do help your grades.
if you were like me, fresh out of high school, all As, on top of the world thinking "this class will be fine for me, the negative reviews are complaining", just be quiet and listen. this professor is the worst one I have ever taken. He is a researcher and should stay that way. demeaning, harsh grader, won't answer questions. don't
Dr. Pomeroy is the reason why I started to enjoy chem. His lectures are very straight to the point, he does have a lot of handwritten practice, and he provides exceptional advice. Although, the main reason why I rate him a 5 is because of his office hours, he not only gave me practice problems to go over but went over them with me. Very helpful.
Okay prof. Spends too much time talking about how to succeed in his class rather than actually teaching. Eventually started to take away resources from the class i.e. powerpoints in order to increase attendance. Will only test you on the hardest aspects of a chapter.
Anyone who put a 3 or less is being petty and probably blaming the prof. If you do the homework without cheating you can literally pass Midterms with ease cuz he literally puts hw and discussion questions in the midterms. Gives 1 hw and one quiz (3Q 10 min) every week. Will happily pass everyone if class average is a B. goes @ a fair speed during L
Professor Pomeroy definitely isn't as terrible as some of these reviews make him out to be, but the class is definitely demanding. The professor does know his material, but there is a clear understanding that you should have some prior knowledge of chem, as his lectures are very fast paced. Please study everyday unless you are a strong chemist.
Professor pomeroy will teach you the things and teach you how college is compared to high school. Go to his office hours it helps!
His lectures don't connect to the actual lab material, and he spends a lot of time deviating from course material to connect it to real life --- which would be awesome, except that that takes time away from actually explaining what goes on in the lab, how the procedure works, and how to write the lab report. A great researcher and chemist; ok prof.
Genuinely do not understand how people wouldn't love Skip. This is one the professor that prefers you not to call him Dr at all costs. He mixes his office hours so he's available twice as long as he should be. Anything tough about his grading is his TAs, he provides everything needed to learn in his class, and be ready for the real world. GOAT
This was my second time taking this professor and he was just as bad this time as last. He is not very nice and expects you to just know the material right away. Only fun thing is he brought his dog to lab a couple of times.
Professor Pomeroy seems to be focused on a lot of things other than class. He spends a lot of time talking about succeeding in college rather than the specific material of the class and his lectures go by really fast. He assumes people have the same knowledge he does about Chemistry so the class is that much harder because of it.
he is extremely blunt, he will not coddle you, no extra credit is given. there are two midterms and a final, plus weekly quizzes but they go into the homework grade. he is very accessible outside of class, but again he is blunt and will straight up tell you that youre doing something wrong. he is very smart, but if you want a "nice" prof he isnt it
Skip spends most of lecture permayapping about his life. Says to prepare for exams, you should rewatch lectures, do HW, go to OH, the usual, but that is only 50% of the exam content, so it was a coin flip for every exam. He encourages you to go to OH but then degrades you and acts condescending when you ask questions. Hard carried by his TA's.
Professor Pomeroy runs a challenging but rewarding class. He expects a lot, but if you put in the work, stay organized, and use helpful study tools like unstuckstudy, you can succeed. The material is tough, but the TAs are great, and his bluntness is appreciated if you're willing to improve.
His recorded lectures were just him reading off of slides he didn't seem to understand entirely. Often, he would read things wrong, or otherwise indicate he didn't care to provide a quality lecture. He did not respond to email, and is unapproachable due to his unpleasant demeanor. This class had no TA, and he does not update canvas at all.
He was a great teacher for environmental chemistry! Not many people came to class, but it's important to show up and ask questions in class! Exams were straight forward with mostly multiple choice questions, and he gave extra credit opportunities with homework. He was clear in the units and lectures. Taking him again for another class!
