He shouts a lot while lecturing and the class is easy but it's also boring as all-get-out
He's an arrogant jerk that will shoot down any students that dares to question him. He's also a boring lecturer but at least the material is mildly interesting
Incredibly knowledgeable prof. He's much more realistic about the world than a lot of the other professors, and will usually work off of facts rather than just spinning hare-brained theories.
Pompous and Arrogant are two words to describe this horrible professor
No Comments
Definitely knows what he is talking about, however his lecture and power point skill need a little work. Has some interesting thoughts that work well into discussions. But I have to give him a Snooze Warning.
easy, but he can be unclear at times. essays are very vague.
an arrogant jerk who theorizes common sense
he was fine, didn't take questions outside his intended train of thought real well, and repeated everything like a million times, boring but intro classes always are
He is very knowledgeable but demands you follow his train of thought. Can be hard to stay awake, I recommend a lot of caffination
You really have to force yourself to listen during the lectures. And don't worry about that long boring reader. Poli Sci 2 was based almost entirely on the lectures (except you might have to read HIS book about s. afr.)
The class is interesting and the material is FABULOUS!! His lectures are really boring so don't forget a cup of java before you step into the lecture hall. The class is definitley worth taking with him as your professor.
good professor. knows his stuff, draws upon many examples. i liked his lecture style...he makes things like storys to keep it interesting.
Good examples to explain different definitions. Lecture are most efficient use of time for preperation for tests. Readings can substitute for lecture-He looks like an 80s **** Star-hes an expert on South Africa. he makes up words like Afrikannerdom.
very knowledgeable
Awesome teacher! If you enjoy the topic, then the lectures will be great.
Fairly good prof. Conversational lecture style with frequent anecdotes. Exams are straightforward. Very interested in the material.
Price drives me nuts!!! His lectures seem to last forever and his droning voice lulls me to sleep. The articles in the reader SUCK and he spends 1/2 the class talking about examples. Thank God I have a nice GSI.
Not bad, you need to bring a computer so that you can surf online during the boring times. Section is great.
I think he is a very good teacher. I think the people who don't enjoy his lectures are too caught up in unimportant matters. He has taught me a lot of things.
Professor Price gives very well organized, easy to understand lectures.
this class is one of the most boring class i have ever taken in my life. it is a ton of reading and too much theory. i always see others falling asleep and snoring...just like me..this class turned me off to the poli sci major..i detest poli sci now. my gsi sucked. price is a bit condescending.
tests are not too hard, too much reading towards the end of the course. The class is BORING and drags. He sometimes has interesting stories to tell, but gives too many and too elaborate examples to the concepts, making terribly boring and the ideal setting to catch some Z's.
Really easy class. Lectures are boring because he is repetitive, but section is interesting. Exams focus on lectures, so you can just skim the readings.
Very boring lectures--he talks like he writes. don't look forward to his book, it's not fun. this class really depends on your gsi, if your gsi is easy, you're fine. if you have vail, can be tough.
I agree with the last comment about the GSI. If you have an easy GSI, this class should be easy. If you have Vail, this class can be tough because Vail more in-depth and critical questions. I disagree with the comments being boring. It can be boring but most of them are interesting.
class gets long and boring. hard to stay awake. the difficulty of the class depends highly upon your GSI. Vail is pretty tough in grading.
he is a really dry lecturer and adheres strongly to the framework for the course that he's constructed. it's really BORING and you fall asleep easily, but it's not really that hard.

I really liked his class. Honestly, compared to other Poli Sci his lectures are very interesting. If you like politics, you should be fine
quotes himself in the third person. completely full of himself. avoid at all costs. GSI kiss his ass like he is jesus.
Price is an excellent lecturer, although a little dry in the first half. That may be due to the subject matter, which involves learning lots of terminology. The research that he did personally into South Africa is intensely fascinating. His lectures are clear and concise.
Boring Lecturer. I wanted to fall asleep in class more than once and many around me did. Tons of reading but I found most of the material very interesting. If you are going to take the class DO NOT have Hahn as your gsi. He is NOT helpful at all and makes things much harder than they should be. JERK
Lectures are very structured and organized 'cause he's a big fan of Powerpoint. Class is easy because all you have to do is regurgitate. No original thinking required. But interesting material and readings nonetheless.

Prof. Price uses Powerpoint...a lot...and it didn't really do it for me. The material is also pretty boring. I would avoid the class unless you need it for your major.
Lectures are sometimes boring. His personal stories are pretty interesting. Other times he uses clips from The Godfather as examples of hierarchy, etc. His book was far more mind-numbing than any lecture...however, I only skimmed the book, and I still got a B+. Not that I recommend that.
His whole purpose for teaching the class seemed to be to force 300 people to buy his (boring) book. The most boring Polisci class I took at Cal. Sure it was easy, but since its required for the major, that doesnt really matter, does it?
He showed us a clip from the Godfather and compared politics to the Sopranos. He's the best.
Says something, then gives like 2389047893563 million examples that are totally unnecessary and boring
No Comments
Like others have said, lectures are kinda boring because he just reads off of his slides, but at least he doesn't talk in a montone. And sure he showed us a clip of the Godfather-big effing deal. That doesn't make someone a great professor. Midterm was very straightforward, class is relatively easy...we'll see if that still holds after the final...
His Powerpoint slides are posted on the web, You don't even need to go to class, memorize them, do the reading (not very much compared to other lower div classes) write clear on your essays (incorporate the reading) and you will do fine. Price is a New Yorker, tough demeanor, but who cares you'll never meet the guy and he doesnt grade anything...
Class is fairly easy if you study. Lectures are SO boring...as others have said he gives tons of examples and when people ask questions he is rude. He is organized with his powerpoint slides. Not the best prof. but not the worst either. I guess the class is ok....it really turned me off to poli sci.
Not too good.
I disagree with many of the comments posted. His lectures are not boring and many of the things he says in class that are crucial to understanding the material are not posted on the powerpoint. He is not rude, just straightforward. He does repeat a lot, but that just means you have no excuse to misunderstand. I think he has a good sense of humor.
Lectures can be pretty boring - they're all based on powerpoint slides that are posted online. However, he expands on his points pretty clearly, though he can be a little repetitive. Also, compared to other classes, there is not too much reading (a relatively thin reader and a few books). The easiness of the class all depends on which GSI you get.
thought lectures for the most part were pretty interesting but I can see how some say it's boring. powerpoint is very clear and picks out main points that will be on tests. he gets pretty detailed in examples, but just wants the concepts to be clear. just go to lecture and pay attention - essays and tests are easy and straightforward.
pretty boring lecturer. Tets are easy. i studied the day of the tests and got an average of a B+. it all depends on how easy a grader your gsi is. not that bad of a class, but it is really hard to pay attention. zoning out is easy in this class. didnt touch the readings and got a B+. this class made me not want to be a poli sci major anymore.
Good Professor, who has alot of experience in his field of studies. Some lectures are boring, but for the most part they are very useful in studying for exams and writing papers. Exam amterials are the same things he discusses in class. I had a woderful GSI (Vasundrah) who went through everything more in depth and was easy to approach. TAKE THE CLA
the lectures can be a bit boring, but after the first month, the topics are alot more interesting. price is very clear and has plenty examples. his powerpoint notes are great and helpful. i had an awesome gsi-brendan. the lectures are extremely helpful for the midterm and final.
The class can get boring, especially when a few students decide to takeover the class with their own agendas. It can get frustrating when these students consistently raise hands and ask questions not related to the class. The class really depends on the GSI. If you have a great GSI, then it's easier; if you don't, then it can be quite difficult.
Lectures were clear and relavant. All assignments including midterm, final and papers were straightforward and consistent with lectures and readings.
This class is quite easy as long as you attend lecture and you have a good GSI (I highly recommend Vasundhara Sirnate...she's amazing). The material is very straightforward, and Price pounds into your brain the concepts you need to know for the midterm and final.
The class was relatively interesting. I think the class could definitely benefit from having a textbook though. It was often difficult to understand the inter-relatedness of various topics of discussion. All in all, a very mediocre course.
This class was my welcome to Berkeley, boy was it a tough one. I got a C on the midterm because I thought if I memorized his powerpoint presentation it would be enough, but you literally have to memorize everyword he says and write it coherently on the midterm and final. I got my first C on the midterm and an A on the final.Go to the study group
This class is pretty interesting especially if you have a great GSI--namely Brendan McSherry who lead thoughtful, active discussion section. Just focus on the lecture slide for the midterm and final. Oh, did I mention that Brendan is HOTT?
The class is actually very easy given that you take extensive notes. The readings are only minimally relevant. My advice to you is to try and be a note-taking machine in class. The midterm and final is just a re-hashing of those notes. You don't have to be that smart to ace this class. Just take good notes! And study them! Price is a bright guy too
Price is awesome, anyone who says otherwise is just a wuss and doesn't know how to study for a poli sci test. You don't have to memorize the notes -- you only have to know the concepts and form a good argument. But make sure that you get a good GSI.
Price is really articulate and knowlegeable. He does alot of summing up (even in his book on S.Africa apatheid) which is helpful. Careful, he's liberal and not afraid to show it, so if you're Bush-loving conservative pro-Iraq war you'll disagree with alot of what he says.
A lot of people I know who have taken this class with him have been very critical of his teaching methods but I have to disagree. I really liked him. He was straight to the point and he had a good sense of humor to boot. A little boring at times but overall I thought he was effective. I developed a little bit of a man-crush on this Brooklynite.
This course is more of a look at the philosophy behind political systems than a straight-up comparison of different systems. Pretty straight foward and clear about what is expected. Make sure to get a good GSI. I, like someone else posted, had Brendan McSherry who was an amazing GSI. If you study at all you should be able to do well int his class.
Definitely, get a good GSI. Your grade is pretty much based on your GSI. THIS CLASS NEEDS TO BE WEBCASTED! Lectures are rarely interesting... his voice lulls people to sleep. Even when my friends and I sat in the front, we still fell asleep. The only thing I don't like about this class is, it has very subjective tests. GSIs determine the grade! GRR
Engaging lecturer but sometimes digresses too much and gives too many examples. Overall, he's interesting and engaging. A lot depnends on your GSI but i think the tests are actually graded rather objectively compared to other classes. If you regurgitate lecture and have some knowledge of the readings you should be fine. My GSI, RobiaCharles isgreat
Your GSI determines your grade! This can't be emphasized enough. I love Bobby Price (his diagrams are ridiculous/hilarious). He's a great teacher, he adds a lot in lecture so it's in your best interest to go. Some of the readings are really boring but just make sure to keep your GSI happy and you'll be set. I love this class.
The lectures are kind of boring, but Price is a cool guy! But like everyone else said, GET A GOOD GSI because having a bad GSI (like I did) makes this class pretty unbearable. The reading in this class doesn't matter nearly as much as his lectures, so it's in your best interest to attend his lectures.
Powerpoint slides not that helpful, since he speaks more than he writes. Readings not very useful, mostly lecture material asked on exams. A good GSI will help you understand a lot in this class. Attendance not mandatory, but you will miss a lot of info not on the slides. Very boring lecturer, though. Just understand concepts for the exams.
class is somewhat interesting, prof price can be boring and i often fell asleep. some of the stuff can be funny tho, but in all reality, the class comes down to your GSI. readings only matter for term papers, and midterm and finals are somewhat easy. make sure you get a good GSI. this class is a polisci prereq so it really doesnt go too indept
He's a nice guy who tries to bring humor into his lectures but he is a mumbler. His voice is very monotonous and half the lecture hall was asleep within the first half hour. Even the GSI admits the reading is pretty useless. Just take good notes and regurgitate them on the test.
Interesting guy... lectures frequently dull, yet I learned a lot
Ummm Lectures fluctuated between somewhat interesting and unbearably boring. I told people all semester that I hated this class, BUT looking back I realize that I actually learned a lot. Much of this is probably thanks to my GSI who was a great teacher - Jordan Branch - if you get him ever as a GSI, count yourself lucky.
Professor Price is a really good guy. His personality is uplifting, great for a class in the middle of the day when you need a boost. Lectures were sometimes boring, but I guess that just depends on your level of interest of the subject matter. It's all writing, and grading is all done by your GSI, meaning its basically arbitrary.
getting a good GSI is very important. My GSI was smart, but she also grades hard. Some lectures interested me, but others I had no clue what was going on (maybe bc i was dozing off~~).
Boring class, but Professor Price does a decent job conveying the necessary information. He is a very learned man with knowledge in many areas, but tends to focus on only his favorites. This class is a prereq, and that is about where its usefulness and quality ends.
A large portion of the lectures were extremely boring, but they start to get more interesting once Price gets into specific examples. I didn't like the class until the very end, but I learned a LOT from it. To do well, study slides and write down everything Price says. Knowing readings may be important depending on your GSI.
They say don't judge the ps major by the prereqs, lectures were excruciatingly boring for me, the reader was torture to read, and I had to force myself to read his books. Looking back, Price did present the basic vocabulary for analyzing with a ps perspective, but the ideas and info presented appeared way too pointless for me to care.
Price is way to interested in the USSR and apartheid South Africa. These things aren't interesting to most current undergrads, but if you can get over the weirdness of his case studies, his class is a good introduction to poli sci. In the end, you only had to copy the things on his power points.
excruciatingly boring, but necessary. easy A, depending on GSI
Jerry Stiller
Lectures are impossible to pay full attention to, esp. for the hour and a half. Tries to make it interesting, but for most people fails miserably. Good person, boring class, should attend lectures and try not to fall asleep, reading not necessary in entirety.
Class is hella boring. Definitely get a good GSI--i got a B+ on my Midterm and B's on both small papers. Test mostly on lecture slides...take good notes. I was going to quit being a poli sci major, but people often say don't get worried with its prereqs. It's one of those classes that you HAVE to take. By far the worst poli sci class i've taken.
price is SO boring. his lectures are like a lullaby putting me to sleep. the subject matter could be pretty interesting.....but he is such a dry lecturer that is hard to remember that. you can learn some useful stuff, and i don't know if the other ps2 profs are any better. all i now is this class convinced me that i'm not interested in poli sci
This class is not that bad. Yes, it can get boring, but you learn plenty and its a good place to start for polisci. Price is nice enough, humble, and a decent lecturer. However, DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS. Really. All you will need is the reader, the others you only need to look at once or twice if at all, in which case you can find them in the library.
I agree with the person before me. You don't need to buy the books. Just read sometimes. This class solely depends on your GSI, so get a good one. Honestly, I didn't like the fact that he read off a paper for lectures and always had millions of exmaples for each little piont. But looking back I did learn quite a bit.
pretty easy class, it really depended on your gsi. lectures were dry and you can get them online, so really no need to go to class. no need to buy the books either. 2 essays, 1 midterm and a final. overall, easy intro course
Great Guy! Lectures can get a bit boring, but overall easy class. Don't buy the books!
HORRIBLE lectures, HORRIBLE reading, HORRIBLE GSI (Andrius who can't even speak English, so you'll have NO idea what's going on), STUPID graphs, LAME professor...take it with a different professor
The professor has lectures that are unbearable at times. The lecture notes are empty, thus you must go to class, which I did not. It is sad that the class is pure essay, of which I did not do so great. A lot of it deals with your GSI. If you have a good GSI you will get a good grade in the class however the opposite is true as well. Make sure u rea
His lectures were pretty dry, hard to stay awake. He focuses a lot on South Africa and the Soviet Union, so if you have no interest in either ... dont take the class. The final was like a history final, it was mainly asking for the history of how the countries industrialized. So just be able to write a story and you should be fine.
Robert Price...his lectures in my opinion were awesome. Price is straight dipped in louie vuiton luggage....gotta love him. I got an A in his class so listen up... you should not even buy the books he says you need except the reader. For the tests, organize your notes and straight memorize them and spit them out on the tests. Great Guy, Great GSI's
Nice professor, midterms and finals aren't too hard. Grading differs across GSIs but for me it was basically reproducing his lecture materials for the midterms and essays ... assigned readings are helpful but really not needed. You can get an A in the course even if you haven't done any of the reading as long as you take good lecture notes.
Though his lectures are somewhat dry, the material is interesting enough to hold your attention when he doesn't. His stories about the USSR are pretty funny, and even South Africa is fascinating enough. If you don't like politics or history, then this may not be for you.
Price is one of the better professors for PS2. Has heavy New York accent. Lectures are clear and organized. You will learn basic concepts in comparative politics - will be useful if you want to take upper division Political Science courses. He may be dry at times, but he attempts to amuse his students, which is always appreciated.
Hands down an amazing lecturer, a brilliant tenured professor. The class is easy to get a B in if you are good at writing essays, but difficult to get a solid A, but grading depends on the GSI. My recommendation is take good notes during discussion and write your GSI's opinion on your essay topics, because the GSI grades the essays, MT, Final.
Easy but flat out BORING. No one ever pays attention in class, which, by the way, turns into a history course during the second half. It's useless and I guarantee you'll fall asleep like 200 other students.
easy class, but very boring lectures. pray you get a good gsi. try as hard as you can to pay attention in lecture and take good notes, you won't need to do anything else for the class if you do that. don't buy the books other than the reader.
I am actually studying for his final right now. I regret taking this class (if only it wasn't a prereq for psych for some reason). Grade 100% dependent upon your GSI. On your first week, if your GSI looks like the anal type just switch GSIs or drop the class. Price's lectures are the most boring lectures ever. Avoid Price if you can help it.
I definitely regret taking this class. Price is a HORRIBLE lecturer, makes it impossible to stay awake. He puts the emphasis on the wrong words in sentences, repeats himself, and changes what he wants to say halfway through. All articles from the 70s and 80s, nothing current and RELEVANT. dont take!
Very organized and makes expectations clear. A lot of this class depends on your GSI; go out of your way to find a good one. Price is not an interesting lecturer, but he covers the material. He often goes on tangents, mostly not interesting, but there are some good ones. (Free speech movement stories were good) Alright professor, nothing special.
I oddly enjoyed this class as much as I was not looking forward to it. It's very freshmenesque and doesn't require too much effort. Just go to every single lecture, try not to fall asleep, and take really good notes. Also, GSI's determine grades. Amer was amazing. Consider yourself lucky if you get him.
Not the best class; not the worst. Generally boring and a struggle to stay awake, but every once in a while he'll drop a little interesting gem (like his vague involvement in the free speech movement). Grading rests solely on GSIs, so basically you'll do fine as long as your GSI likes you and your writing.
Awful, boring professor. Tells pointless stories that are supposed to be examples, but make little sense. Your grade depends on your GSI, which can be a crapshoot. Read and internalize Easton's model as well as Price's lecture slides; try to participate in discussion.
need to attend the lecture but no need to read any readings. his exams are very easy, you will most likely get an easy A (he doesn't use curve!). the hardest part will be the essay. if you never had any experience on writing poli sci essays, then you need to be aware of.
I actually really enjoyed this class. It was very easy. The tests were very straight forward. It isn't the most exciting class so don't take it after lunch. Very easy to get a good grade. Dr. Price is very helpful in office hours.
Price is not boring. He's average when it comes to lectures. His OH are great, and him and Breslauer - now admins - are old Sovietology crooks, in that bad-ass academic sense. The class was fun for PS majors. Some people said Price looked like a 70s XXX star, but I didn't see it. Bob Price is the best person to take PS2 with, so don't hesitate.
He is very organized and responsible, also a fair grader. I mean the class is not easy, requires a lot of time to study, but if you are willing to ask, he will make sure to let you understand. Make sure to study all chapters, notes, materials, and do all the homework(make sure you understand all questions), then you will be fine!
