His goal is to weed out at least 1/2 the class by mid tearm. and if anyone in his class gets a grade higher than a "C" he feels he didnt do his job. avoid him at all cost.
I loved this class. He was always willing to help if you asked. Everything you need to know is in the lectures so take good notes.
His tests are hard, you have to know everything. His teaching was ok but i didnt like him. He is really different.
This class sucked.
I FELT THAT HIS TESTS DIDN'T REFLEX WHAT HE TAUGHT IN CLASS.
sucked hard.
He thinks he is funny, but all he does is subtlely tear down the beliefs of the majority of the class. He is NOT a good teacher!
He's one of the worst teacher I have ever had. I worked very hard trying to do well in his class but he tries to fail me. I do NOT reccomend anyone to take his class. Your GPA will be ruined if you take his class.
He is very unfair. His tests are not what his study guide says. You never know what the test is going to be on. His goal is to make you fail and has no pitty whatsoever.
I had this professor a few years ago, but he is still one of the best teachers I have ever had. he gave great examples, and even though he was a little goofy at times, his class was really fun
This was a good class. I do not really care alot for plants, it was fun and interesting. Take this class if you can.
He was funny, but a total Hippie. Wears ties that match subject material discussed. He graded hard. He used sex conotations all the time. Worked hard, but gave me a bad grade. Try to avoid!
This teacher is horrible, I studied for hours for each test and still failed. On one test EVERYONE in the class got below a 69% which is a D, I'm still in the class now and I know I'll be going to summer school.
Horrible class. Study if you want-it wont do you any good becuase he will try and trick you. The tests do not match the study guide, so why boother with it. PS, beware females: he's a total ****.
Professor, Robbins, as far as his teachings: its okay but what he teaches is not on the test. Read, use vistual aides, the CD ROM, going to class, taking notes, using the study guide, I am sorry, this teacher is wacked and his testes are hard because he does not teach it! (Period!!)
Terrible teacher!! He does not teach anything of relavance. He grades WAY too hard for an intro class. Makes lots of inappropriate jokes and references. Terrible, Terrible, Terrible. Avoid at all costs!
This guy is a ****. He is by far the worst teacher I ever had. I echo everything else everyone has said. He makes fun of Utah and Mormons all class and does not teach what is on the test. He loves to refer to himself as Doctor too. He just eats up the ego.
The worst professor I have ever had. Avoid this idiot at all cost!!!!!!!! Stupid hippie.
He is a total tripper!! His tests suck, and most students do very poorly. YOU DO NOT WANT THIS TEACHER. His study guides are not like the test. Regardless of the situation - he will not give any leway for anything....REGARDLESS...
I really loved this class. A lot of people think he is dull, but I think he's funny. I appreciated the things I learned in this course.
This class is very easy. His notes are kind of unorganized but understandable. With little studying, I got an A. I think his study guides are effective, and I would suggest him.

Teachers should not impose religious or political beliefs on other students! This guy is a big jerk who's tests are impossible! My whole class failed the course! Don't study, won't do you any good! SOMEBODY FIRE HIM!!!
Robbins is a hard teacher but understands biology, particularly plant anatomy and all botony very well. he knows his stuff, i found this to be reassuring knowing that i had a teacher that actually knew the material very well. His tests are incredibly hard, if you leave no doubt as to your understanding of the material, you'll do fine.
This teacher expects something of you dont take his classes if you are not a serious student. I have taken two of his classes and recieved A's out of both i studied exactly what his notes said and i did well the students that did not do well are the ones who just plain are not willing to work for a grade. i wouldnt recomend him if you want an easy grade he will make you work. if you are up to challenge yourself then take his classes.
My friend missed a test, and Robbins wouldn't let him make it up, even though he never annouced the test, and it was a day after he missed. I took him, and he was hard. His test was nothing he taught in class. He was very cocky, and all he taught about was darwinism. I wouldn't take him at all.
He's really hard. Almost everyone in the class bombed his tests and he claims he doesnt curve. I would not recommend this teacher.
He's a very good teacher. He really understands the subjects, and requires you to understand them as well(which some students have a hard time with). He does require a lot from you, but if you try you will come out learning a lot about biology, which in my opinion is what makes a good teacher.
He was a great lecturer. (Even if he has his humor quirks) The tests were difficult, but not impossible. Not the best, but not the worst either.
Worst teacher at Utah Valley High. This guy really needs to quit complaining about Utah and find a real job instead of an associate professor at an open enrollment state college. He preaches darwinism and evolution and makes you answer your tests as if its absolute truth instead of a theory. Never take this guy.
I personally didn't mind this teacher as a person, but feel he was VERY demanding, expecting students to love biology as much as he does. His tests are very difficult. I wouldn't recommend him unless you are going into biology..
I took botany 1010 from Prof Robbins a few years ago. Seriously, I didn't mind his sense of humour, nor his cheesy jokes. Actually, he is a nice guy. In my opinion, easiness doesn't constitute a good teacher, but this teacher was REALLY tough. If you have a hard time with intense memorization,DO NOT take this class!!
These people who are failing his class are not trying at all. Instead of going to class I just read the textbook at home, and the days I do go to class he covers the exact same information thats in the book. Only he is more entertaining and answers questions. If you are taking Bio you have to learn about evolution, you dont have to believe it.
He knew a lot about the subject so if you ask a question he can always explain. His test were hard so you have to really pay attention and take lots of notes as well as study out of the book.
I wish I would have know about this site before taking his class! I do agree with most, he is horrible. Even when I really try and copy down all the notes its hard to keep up cause about 35% is "good info but something you don't need to know" and everything is written on an overhead in horrible handwriting. Tests are Hard, NEVER AGAIN
Good teacher, always good for a laugh in class. I'm not sure why so many have a hard time in his class. Take notes, fill out the review sheet and STUDY. You'll do fine on the tests. Want an A? Work for it. Just need a C? Just put in a little effort. Can't handle someone who believes in darwism? Wake up! It's BIOLOGY! What do you expect?
Not easy. No Homework. Just tests. Have to do well on them to pass. Gives only 4 tests throughout the semester. Confusing tests. Many answers to one question. Jumps around a bit in the test also. It is extremely hard. Don't take it from him.
From the previous posts, you can see the type of student pool we have here at uvsc. Everybody wants a handout. Hint: want to do good? Pull out your review sheet during lecuture and he answers just about everything on it. Take notes on what he SAYS, not just what he writes. I rarely used the textbook, so I wish I wouldn't have purchased it.
This guy should be ban from ever teaching anywhere! I was a straight A Student uantil his farce. The tests questions were made not to go with anthying taught in class. I took impecible notes and never missed a class.Avoid this so called teacher at all costs! He enjoys putting his students down in class with extreme direspect! He should be fired!
He works is very hard for his lecture, but not very interesting. I take the course in summer, it is so tired for me to follow his lecture in the whole 2.5 hours. The knowledge he require you remenber is a little higher than general. It is nearly impossible for get A. If you need a high score, he is not your good choice.
I found the study guides provided for the BIO 1010 class to match the tests extremely well. it wasn't word for word by any means, but if you study the guides and know the principles and such behind them, you will get an A on the tests. I did on all of them only studying once every other week for a few hours. his lectures are interesting/enjoyable.
DO NOT TAKE BIO FROM HIM!!! He is not there to help you succed. He is there to tell you all he knows about biology and thats it. His study guides don't match the test and you can't study out of the book. He tests on what he says in class. Not from the notes he write on the board.
If you get this teacher RUN!! He is by far the worst teacher in science department. His study guides do not match what he teaches in class and they jump from chapter to chapter. He is not very educated and always has a hard time answering questions. He is not there for the students at all. I am a straight A student and I am failing this class.
do anything possible not to get this teacher. the class is extreamly hard. the tests are very long and unclear, aswell as hes class. study guides for tests are more then 10 pages long. test cover over 200 pages of text and over 10 chapters of text.
I took Biology 1610 last semester from a hard professor and got a B;I'm hoping at this point that I'll be able to get a B or higher in 1010. I retook biology because I NEEDED an A, and thought this would be an easy class... not so.
this is seriously the hardest class I have taken at college (im a junior). This guy is the most unhelpful professor I have ever had which made matters worse. Avoid if you can
When I say I had never taken a Biology class before this, I mean NEVER. I couldn't have told you the first thing about it, but I learned more in Dr. Robbins' class than I ever have in any other. Plus I got a 97% A. My secret? I put forth an effort. If you take notes and want to learn about the subject along with getting those shiny credits on
This class was ridiculous. His notes were bad, he was boring, and the tests were hard. I studied more than I studied in any other class and still did bad. If you want to do well, you'd either have to study extremely hard, or naturally get his teaching style and testing style. I thought since I'm smart it'd be easy, but it's not!
Dr. Robbins is an excellent teacher. He is very tough and a little eccentric but then most science professors are. He is very nice and willing to go the extra mile to make sure you understand the material. I also tutored for his lower level biology classes so maybe I'm a little biased. Overall a great professor.
Notes from class are used a lot for the tests and quizzes.
hardest class I ever had, do not take classes from this teacher
This professor was good with object lessons, but not good at applying things to real life. Tests are truly difficult, and the study guides provided don't help, but take hours upon hours of useless work.
I am a senior this year and this by far is the hardest class that I've ever taken. His tests are so hard, and refuses to help students prepare for the tests. He just says to refer to class notes and the study guide, which is a wild goose chase. His test are full of typos and very poorly worded questions.
this course was less like an intro to Biology and more like a platform for him show off how smart he is. He is not effective in teaching the material, I am an A- B+ average student I would read the chapters and I performed poorly on all of his tests he doesn't know how to teach it nor does he seem to care if students learn and understand it
VERY HARD don't take from him! Study guides are a joke, as well as his notes! He likes to show off his knowledge of the info..
Very condescending. Not clear about what to study for exams. Doesn't answer students questions with respect. Treats us as if we remember everything we learned in high school. Very confusing on complex subjects, won't simplify for understanding. I have to pay another $300 (or so) and take this class again because I can't understand what he's talking
Worst professor I have ever had. STAY AWAY! Straight A student and I got a D. Bummer. his notes are all over the place and his test are very hard even if you know everything on the study guide
For a guy making $80k per year (utahsright.com), you'd think they would train him on how to use something other than the overhead projector. Paraphrased quote from first class, "I'm not here to babysit you, I don't care how hard you try, I don't offer extra help, the average test score is a C or lower and there is no curve." Enroll at your own risk
Horrible teacher!! I wish I would have looked at some of these reviews before I took his class. His tests are way too hard for a 1010 course and he tries to trick you. I'm an A student have studied my guts of for this class, but will probably only pull a B out of his class. DO NOT TAKE FROM HIM. He isn't helpful when you ask questions
HATED this course, as well as the professor. He knows his stuff, but he doesn't teach it well. Very disrespectful and rude.
His teaching style is ridiculous. He writes on the overhead for the whole lecture. If want to do good in class, the only thing you need to be good at is memorization. Questions in the tests are for really specific things, so it doesn't matter if you have grasped a concept, because he will ask something very specific. Otherwise an A student, got a C
My advice, GO to tutoring!! I got an A-. Go to class and Go to tutoring. He is not hard, he just expects you to listen. He does not test from the book he writes his own so Pay attention to examples, and stories. He "dumbs" everything down a TON so just pay attention and put your blackberry's away! if you take in summer, expect quizzes every day!!
Excellent course. The teacher expects you to attend class but it is not required. A lot of memorization is required. He always seems to go the extra mile to help students understand as well as provide visual aids. Very tough course, harder than a sopmore level class should be. However, this course very worth it if you enjoy botany!
He is hilarious! He is willing to risk looking like a fool so his students will remember the concepts he teaches. There are no assignments in this class, only tests, so you need to keep up on studying. If you need to take Bio, I recommend him!
My advice, do not take his Bio 1010 class. He gives his lectures on an overhead projector the whole time, no hw, no projects, just exams, and teaches like he teaches to students who know some Bio (not me!). He's ridiculous. If you are able to read through the text and teach yourself Bio, then you'll be okay. If not, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
I loved his class. I think he's really funny. It is kinda hard to not have any assignments and only have exams but I ended up liking it. I took good notes, always went to class and went to the class tutor and never really studied. I didn't really need to. If I had studied I would've gotten an A+ for sure. Easy class. Double recommend.
This class was ridiculous. He was really quite confusing. I attended every class and took copious notes and still almost didn't pass. I usually love Biology but he totally ruined it. Multiple times(for every test)he would say stuff in class and clearly note that we wouldn't need to know it, but it would always end up on the test. Not a good tacher.
I should have dropped this class when I had the chance. He's a nice person and is very funny. But his teaching methods (long lectures and jotting down a few notes and diagrams on an overhead) bores me to tears. No homework, just pop quizzes and exams. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS THE REST OF YOUR CLASSES ARE BIRD CLASSES! Prepare to memorize!
He has no passion for students to succeed, you can try as hard as possible and at the end of the day he doesn't care. I do not recommend him to anyone.
Very hard class. Went to class, studied the book and his lectures and still got a C+. Grade based only on 4 tests and pop quizzes. Tests were very hard and tricky; almost as though he does this for entertainment. If you do take: write down EVERY single word he says & writes even if he doesn't, thoroughly read the text,& don't miss a single class!
I'm a biology major and needed upper division botany. This class was horrible. I was actually quite interested in what we were talking about but Robbins took all the fun out of it and made us memorize lots of chemical structures and other pointless things. He is very difficult to follow in lecture. Take a different class!
He is not a horrible teacher, however he is a bit stuck in his ways. He still uses an overhead projection, hand writes all his notes. To make it worse he doesn't have the greatest handwriting which makes it difficult to read those notes. He is however willing to answer questions relative to the course. Be prepared to use the Testing Center.
He wasn't a bad teacher...actually quite funny. He uses a projector and hand writes all his notes. His handwriting is very poor. You literally have to write down every word hes says because anything that comes out of his mouth and information in the book is going to be on the test. His tests are hard and covers 5+ chapters. Good Luck!
Agree with the previous comments. It's such a shame because he really knows his stuff, he just doesn't do a good job teaching it. Also, his study guides are kind of insane and I feel like I'm going to have a panic attack every time I have to study for one of his tests.
The other comments about this teacher is correct. His study guides are hard to finish let alone study. He does multiple choice questions, however you have 8 choices to choose from.. 3 of which are the correct awnser, but you have to decide what the teacher feels is the best awnser not the book It's all a guessing game.
When it comes to his study guides they are impossible to finish because more than half of the answers are really specific to what he says in class. His actually test are hard because its multiple choice A-G on every question, which multiple are right. You pretty much have to write down every word he says if you expect to guess at the right answer.
This professor was worthless. He did not care about what outside of class was effecting your life. He did not go over things very well and his test were ridiculous. He purposely tries to make you fail. The test questions have multiple answers that could be right on each one and you have to figure what he would think is the best answer. DONT TAKE IT
Please beware this class! I thought it would be easy, since it was gen ed. class. Your whole grade comes from exams, which are extremely difficult considering over half of the question answers are always from lecture(his own words). I mean that in a literal way, the exact jokes he uses end up on the exams. Textbook and study guides are useless.
I'm the type of student that wants to learn, regardless of whether or not the class has to do with my major. Professor Robbins was a very hard teacher, he's old school and uses a projector, he goes on tangents all of the time yet still expects you to know everything on the tests. I would not recommend this class to anyone. ever.
This professor was horrible! He stutters constantly with the word "um" and is very unclear about the subject material. His tests are extremely difficult, and all of your grade is based on exams and quizzes. All are multiple choice, with a-g as the available choices. His study guides are pointless. I would NEVER EVER take this class again!
Dr. Robbins is a nice man, and is very passionate about biology, but he has a hard time teaching it. He constantly stutters and is unorganized in his material. Your grade is based on ONLY tests, which sucks, because his tests are very hard and complicated to understand. He's a great person though, and has a great personality.
Do not take this teacher. He is very difficult. I am usually a A student, I barely got a B. Tests are very difficult, all raw scores, no curves. Pop quizzes, and not sure when they are. No homework and no extra credit. All dependent on tests and pop quizzes. Don't take him.
Dr. Robbins is an expert in his field, passionate and an encyclopedia of information. Class attendance is required to pass but if you pay attention you won't have a problem passing. Make sure you take really good notes, and be forewarned that he is kind of old school but it's honestly not that bad. Nicest man ever.
Worst teacher ever ruined my GPA, don't bother reading the text book, most of the answers are stuff he rambled about in class. Further if he says "this won't be on a test" Better write it down and memorize it word for word.
COME TO CLASS, TAKE GOOD NOTES. EVEN IF IT SOUNDS LIKE A JOKE, CHANCES ARE IT WOULD BE ON THE TEST. EVERYTHING HE SAYS FINDS ITS WAY TO THE TEST, THE WAY HE SAID IT. SO, ATTENDANCE IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO PASSING THIS CLASS WITH GOOD GRADES. AND HE GIVES POP QUIZZES, AGAIN, YOU HAVE TO BE IN CLASS.
This class was tough! Only reason I passed was because of supplemental instruction study group. He does not teach clearly. Questions on quizzes are meant to really make you think. Your grade is based only on quizzes and tests. His notes are hard to follow. He does not show any mercy with your grade. Good luck!!
You know those professors that pride themselves in being difficult so they continue to destroy students GPA's? Dr. Robbins is one of those professors. The class wasn't hard it was just straight up helpless. His lectures don't have structure, the study guides don't match up with what is taught, and the tests are stacked against you. Avoid this guy.
Robbins loves to ruin students' GPAs. Doesn't care about you or your grade at all. He intentionally tries to trick you with his ridiculous quiz and test questions. No extra credit or chances to make up points. Also doesn't use Canvas so you have no feedback throughout the semester of how you're doing.
Run away while you can! During lectures he dumbs down everything & provides useless information then when you go to take the test it's like a whole new language for geniuses. His study guide is a novel just go through your text book highlight the entire chapter then there's your study guide. Your whole grade is based on 5 tests & pop quizzes yikes!
Only take this class if you know you're a really good test taker. Your entire grade is tests and pop quizzes which are impossible. It makes me sad that this class was so hard to enjoy. He is obviously very passionate about the subject, but he is just so set in his ways. He refuses to use canvas and you never know your grade.
I'm a junior and took this class dreading it from the reviews, he's actually an amazing teacher. Writes all notes on board and doesn't use PowerPoint which I respect. Tests are hard and very through (if he goes over it in class, he expects you to know it!) but they were straight forward (not like doc shivelys).
Never miss a class, memorize the text book word for word, and you might pass, I've never gotten below a B, but I doubt I'll even pass this, he rambles, bounces all over, spends 10+ minutes per class explaining things he says we don't need to know or making bad jokes, tests are long, technical, and the only thing your grade is based on. RUN AWAY!!!
Read the whole book, memorize the glossary, and never miss a class you'll be fine. Otherwise you'll fail.
Knows Biology, doesn't teach Biology well. The tests are impossible. Taking notes, reviewing the study guide and studying on your own won't do you any good. He phrases the test questions to try and trick you, literally impossible to do well in this class if you're not really good at test taking and learning out of a book.... Don't take his class.
Not very interactive class. Lecture then test. Very straightforward.
Lectures, pop quizzes, and then fat exams. Not willing to work with you if you've fallen behind.
Dr. Robbins was one of the worst professors Ive had so far. He knows his biology, but isn't good at teaching it. All he does is lecture, and ramble. If you ask questions, he doesn't answer clearly. His tests are hard and require you to learn the material outside of class on your own.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He is out dated and weird. I would not recommend him to anyone. You have to understand and take notes on every word he says to have any hope for the tests. He still uses an overhead projector and he refuses to use canvas because of "security issues". I would not advise taking him to ANYONE!
Overall, just lots of random material covered in class that wasn't necessarily related to Biology and didn't always end up in the tests. Look elsewhere if you really want to learn Biology effectively and with greater ease.
WORST biology teacher ever. He is super old school and writes on an overhead projector for his lectures. He goes off on tangents during class and doesn't really cover the material needed for tests. Study guides are super long and the tests are so so hard. would not recommend.
He does not post your grades on canvas so you never know what you have, and your only grades are pop quizzes and tests. He lectures and says "you won't need this for the test, just party trivia" and then guess what shows up on the tests? His tests are designed to trick you and he doesn't curve anything.
Whatever you do, please do not take this class from this teacher. He is extremely difficult. There is no homework; your grade is dependent on tests and pop quizzes, and I cannot stress how hard these tests and quizzes are. He also does not use canvas, so you are in the dark about what your grade is until the end of the semester.
The key to this class is your attitude. There are a ton of pop quizzes. However, he's very entertaining. He cares a lot about the subject so it is easy to learn from him if you give the class the work it needs in and out of the classroom. Biology is just a difficult subject but the professor isn't to blame for that. It just requires effort.
Lots of pop quizzes and prepare to take a ton of notes. I did learn quite bit but the class itself didn't have a fun learning environment.
He's tough but really cares about the student and gives bonus points throughout the year to help offset one bad grade. Average your final and lowest test to replace lowest test
I am honestly surprised by how poorly these reviews are. I absolutely loved Robbins class. He is very knowledgeable and you can tell he loves what he teaches. He can be fun and silly while still teaching. Only graded on weekly quizzes and exams (with bonus questions). As long as you come to class and study (like you're supposed too), they are easy.
This professor was tough and the lecture in class was not very good to study off of. Make sure you get the book and study each day before class in case of a quiz and study hard for the tests.
Graded solely on tests and weekly quizzes, which he does not go off of the study guide for. No extra credit offered. If you are not a great test taker, BEWARE.
Doesn't use Canvas; no update on grade whole semester. Doesnt answer questions directly, goes off on tangents, confusing language, lectures don't prep you for the tests; THE TESTS ARE ENTIRE GRADE. Study guides prep you most for the test, but they only get you 76% of the info, so be prepared to spend a lot more on your own learning the material!
Your entire grade comes from pop quizzes and exams. No extra credit, no homework besides reading text and notes. If you miss class or don't take notes you wont pass, or will get a really bad grade. Some of the questions on the exams are only known if you come to class. No retakes for missing an exam or quiz. Uses the testing center for exams.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! We started out with 40 students and by the end of the semester had 9. One by one everyone dropped out. Save yourself the time and just don't sign up for his class. He knows what he is teaching about and that is the problem. No one else knows because he assumes you already know it. PLEASE DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!
Don't do it. I thought I would be able to try hard despite the bad reviews. Never regretted a decision more in my life. His lectures would work for people during his time, but now days? No. All notes done on paper through projector, and when talking doesn't make sense so it's hard to follow. First class I actually failed in my life and Im an A kid.
.the entire semester I had no clue what my grade was, still don't even after it's over. He uses the projector like an old overhead. He doesn't post grades ever. Pop quizzes. Also, lots of tests, but no homework. Those pop quizzes and tests are what you're presumably graded on. And last day of class, he showed a movie and took off, no review.
Awful teacher. He lectures the entire class and writes some things on the board but most of the time just rambles and goes on weird tangents. Study guide doesnt match up with test at all. The grade is based only off the tests and pop quizzes but he doesnt enter the grade in until after the semester ends so you have no idea what your grade is.
Teacher is not very clear, gets off topic very easily and doesn't teach hardly any of the material on the tests. To pass his class you have to show up and read the book front to back and study the book hard. His lectures are pointless and often argues with students.
Super nice teacher, was willing to stay after class and answer questions. Offered an extra supplement study group. He had clear study guides for all of the exams. The professor started almost every class off with some music and a few comics. Just beware of the almost weekly pop quizzes.
This was the worst class. Dr R is a really passionate guy about what he teaches, but he gets off on tangents, doesn't make any sense, you never know what your grade is, and the study material NEVER matches up with the tests. He doesn't grade on a curve. I studied for hours on end and used all my resources and still ended up with C's on my tests.
Hasn't put grades in since the beginning of the semester. I still don't know what my grade is in the class, even after the semester. The majority of the class failed all the tests, and he doesn't curve your final grade. Lots of pop quizzes and the study guides for the test don't match up with the test. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. No extra credit either
Studying the study guide is pointless, nothing on there is actually on the test. Lectures are hard to listen too, as he always goes on tangents and makes bad jokes. Quizzes are random, so you cant miss any days. Study from the book to think you have any chance at a test. Also has questions on test asking questions on ethics.
Robbins lectures all day, and will go off topic and talk about his life when he was young, things that don't have anything to do with biology. You only get graded on quizzes and tests, a lot of trick and impossible questions you cant get right. I thought I could study a lot and read the textbook and I would be fine, but I was wrong. Just don't.
