Great professor; text is very easy to understand
Great teacher; proves that learning can be fun
At 50+, still a hot babe. I loved his lectures and he is funny!

Take him if you want to have fun in econ.
Lots of fun in a boring topic. Get to know him.
Dr. Sexton helped me through the tough times I was going through first semester.
Uses his own book.
he rocks
He's my hero.
he's a great teacher and makes the class fun, only two tests or the final
the most fun that econ can be, we watch movies
No Comments
FUN!! and i never used to like econ before this
No Comments
class is useless and he thinks he's too cool
Funny, funny, funny! Never had such a great class. He stays on schedule, covers all material and manages to play a movie clip every class. He always let us out early.
A fun class, but you have to know your material. But, if ECON isn't you thing, at least he makes it interesting. Even though attendance wasn't required, I would go because I enjoyed the class. I was also overseas with him- he made the trip hilarious.
interesting and amusing

Attendence is not required. he only gave two midterms and one final....but the exams are hard...his lecture is ok....
Hey is sooo funny! He is there for his students more than any other professor. He goes out of his way to talk to you inside and outside of class. His expectations are clear, and if you study hard and go to class you will succeed.
Great teacher!! Pretty easy! Suggest him to everyone!!! As a helpful tip, learn Spanish, makes it more fun!!!!
good teacher - makes it easy and fun
He teaches straight from his book. He will curve the test in order to pass all the idiot athletes in the class.
He is one of the most clever professors I have ever had. I don't go to class, and I still do well on the tests. Go to class just to watch him and listen to his witty remarks.
You've got to love not having to take the final if you are happy with your grade, and if you do take the final it won't hurt your grade. Awesome prof, fun guy, cool class.
Probably the most positive GE Econ experience you could hope for.
Great Guy. Tests are killer, but if you read all the chapters and go to class you'll be fine.
Only take if your an athlete. He is extremely hard and plays favorites to athletes. Unfair grader

Possibly one of the funniest men alive. Class was always pretty interesting & I would have gone more if he had an attendance policy. Will do well if you go to class because he is good at teaching the material. He was always very entertaining
Sexton is one of the best teachers alive! He realizes that you have other classes than just his! The tests are actually a bit intense, but he's EXTREMELY generous on the grading curves!
Absoluely awesome. Huge curve. Follows by the book that he wrote. Plays at least two movies each class period. Greastest GE ever.
Yeah this guy is awesome. Too bad this class doesn't have an attendance policy, because he makes you actually want to go. Plays at least two movie clips every class and is a comic. Really knows his stuff, and you don't have to go to class if you don't want to, because half of the class doesn't.
Does play favorites to athletes, I'll concede that, but he is amazing. So intelligent and helps you learn. If you can take him, do!
Cool guy! I don't play sports and I still got an A, and guess what I went to class six times, including the day of the test, and the days he handed them back (next class period), you do the math! Some get mad because their grade is so low that the curve still doesn't help them! Take him, please!!
Prof Sexton is HOT!!!
Since when is an easy professor a good professor? This class was ridiculous and it is because of people who think its hard that Pepperdine is ranked the way it is. Seriously how did you guys get in?
One of my favorite teachers ever! Everyone who keeps saying he plays favorites to athletes could be right but it makes no difference, if you do bad in his class it's your own fault. Having no attendace policy was a blessing and a curse but it got you ready for the real world. If anything, he helps you realize what's important. And if you think it sucks to have a teacher that can make you laugh as much as help you absorb the material...maybe there is something wrong with you.
Awesome!!
Professor Sexton is so awesome. Let's be honest...most of us don't want to go into economics and he knows that, because if we did, we'd be in upper-division Econ classes, not his. I got mono halfway through the semester and missed a test, but he still worked with me. I probably went to class 10 times the entire semester, and did well. He is HOT!!!!
This man is a great teacher. His class is fun, and he provides incentive to get up for class in the morning even though he doesn't require it. We watch movies, he is funny, he grades reasonably, and even though the material is challenging he is willing to work with you. Take his class.
Great teacher! Econ is a hard subject, but he does a good job explaining things. It's hard to take notes in his class, but he DID write the textbook. He uses videos, which is cool, and works with you to do well in his class. Highly recommended!
Have to be self-motivated/really good at econ to get a good grade. Just do all the online hw's and study super hard. Go to class, as it is entertaining and he is cute :)
For a GE econ class, Sexton is the way to go. You should really do the reading (in which case you can basically not go to class), but the book is fairly painless. Plus, if you do decide to go to class, he shows movies which is really nice. And you've gotta love the curves on his test X-)
i reallly hate econ but this prof made it bearable and didnt drone on in the class for two straight hours. he even includes fun video clips! thumbs up!
sexton and the sextons
Sexton, Sexton, Sexton. You will skip class at least four times a month but on the days you actually do go, you will have a blast. From movie clips to Sexton's funny antics with Caesar (the projector tech in elkins), this class is very fun. Don't just read the textbook, study it! For Sexton wrote it himself! He practically recites it in class.
Sexton is pretty good...he's entertaining in class and shows movies, but doesn't really slow down and teach material or connect with individuals...still, an easy A...not a bad GE to take
He is a really nice guy, but ECON 200 can still be very challenging. If you read the book you should be able to do well. He doesn't give any homework, just 2 tests. Understand the charts and this class will be cake.
Easy class, study the book and the tests won't be that bad. Great professor, explains his stuff well, and the lectures are actually fairly entertaining. People who don't like this guy, have to really, really suck at econ.
I love this man. I hate econ with a fiery passion, and I went to class maybe 7 times all semester, but I still managed to get a B in the class. He curved our first test 16% and our second test 18% so I'm not sure how anyone could not pass this class. He is HILARIOUS and makes the class interesting. Definitely a great GE to take.
His tests are pretty easy (all M.C. and true/false), yet he still ends up curving them a lot as if they were hard. You get to watch movie clips during class and you don't have to take the final exam. Good teacher, take this class!!!
Sexton is great! He lectures out of the book that he wrote (although he does go pretty fast). He shows movie clips during class, and is funny. His grading is the best. 2 mid-terms and a final. You grade is either the avg of the midterms or the final (whichever is higher). Also has double digit curves on midterms. You can get and A if you read
Even though I got a C in this class, Sexton is actually a pretty good teacher. If you want an A, read every chapter and sit in the middle-front of the class. He Is really generous with his curves on the midterms and finals.
Although I had to take his class at 8 am, Sexton definitely made it bearable! He is a nice guy and he shows fun video clips in his lectures to break up the monotony. His tests are super easy and he gives HUGE curves. It's almost impossible to do poorly in Sexton's class!
Sexton is fun (perhaps a little TOO fun at 8am?) and incredibly smart. You couldn?t ask for a better Econ teacher, even if he does go a little fast at times. Class is not mandatory but highly recommended. Econ is one of those classes that you can use to your benefit for the rest of your life, and that?s especially true when taken with Sexton. Also,
I have no idea what these people are talking about. This man may know his subject, but he's got to be the worst professor here. Sure he's funny, sure he's nice. If you have to curve your final up two grades in order for everyone to pass, something's wrong. This is not a revenge comment, because I got a B in the class teaching myself! Class = LULZ.
Makes economics interesting.
I was in class last Fall 2009 & I loved it. Not sure what the other student is talking about. That student said he taught himself & got a B AFTER the final was curved up 2 letter grades. Sounds to me like he would have really earned a D! I went to most classes, took good notes & got an A without the curve!
I had this class in Fall 2009. While I'm not complaining about getting an A with the curve, I also agree with the previous poster. Curving two grades to get people to pass is ridiculous. On the other hand, Prof. Sexton was a really cool guy! Class is fun. I don't reccomend buying the book because you probably can't sell it back. Get the online ver.
He's a good professor. He wrote the book, so he knows what he's talking about. The exams are fine with the curve he gives; you just have to study and do corrections. Overall, a good class, but the video clips he uses are pointless. He goes fast too.
Great Class, Wish he curved more...Need the hellp...
Awesome class. Love the short video clips. Repeats everything. Go to class it helps.
Love him. He's so fun to listen to just rambling on and on, even at 8am.
He teaches from the book. His power points are directly from the book. No need to go to class. If you need tutoring go see Tom! He is extremely helpful and understands that Aplia (the online homework) can be hard, but this class is definitely easy if you are willing to read on your own and seek help, beyond Sexton.
I was dreading this class but Sexton made it interesting
I dreaded Economics, but he made it fun and interesting. Tests are all multiple choice and fairly easy.
(Don't know if I put in the correct ISBN!) Good class. Kind, engaging, funny! On the down side-It's pretty unethical to rip us off the way he does with the books though. Publish a new book every year with missing chapters just to steal our money? Not very kind. I already have enough debt, thank you. Apparently some people use econ to be mean.
I took all of my required and electives Econ-related class with him. VERY good in teaching and made me understand all the topics clearly. I was a student in Pepperdine in 1989-1993.
Professor Sexton is the most entertaining teacher I have ever had. His sense of humor is amazing and he shows the best movie clips to relate to the lessons. You may hate econ but going to class wontbe boring.
He wrote the book, he recites the book, his power points are copied from the book, therefore, class is not mandatory. The online Aplia homework is hell: super long and tedious for not many points. He grades on a huge curve, there are corrections, and you don't have to take the final unless you want a better grade. Overall, easy.
he is cute nice and funny i look forward to being in his class
I have to say that he is a pretty interesting teacher and makes the class really fun if you. We had 3 exams which were easy to pass if you read the chapters. Go on the review days which is usually the day before the text, it helps. READ THE BOOK or go to class. Curves on all exams and hw. Aplia (online hw) sucks really bad but only worth 10%.
3 Exams, curved depending on class average. If you do well on those, then no final. The final is HELL. Much harder than 3 exams. So do well on the exams so you don't have to take the final. Online homework is 10% of grade but drops 4 lowest grades. Go to class, read book, and go to tutoring. Easy class if you pay attention and ask for help.
I really wanted a solid A for this class, but ended up with an A-. I talked to him and he said it's still a good grade. If you have no prior knowledge of graphs or numbers then I suggest to study extra hard to earn that A. Go to the tutoring labs. It's a big lecture class so make sure you meet him. The online HW is harsh.
Professor Sexton was super energetic but his tests are HARD. You literally have to memorize all your notes.
One of the easiest classes I've taken so far at Pepperdine. It's literally all common sense. Tests are super easy if you're even the least bit intelligent. Aplia is time consuming but helps you learn the concepts. I would definitely recommend this class--Sexton is awesome!
funny and entertaining guy! doesn't always explain everything very clearly, but is very approachable if you have questions!
Makes an otherwise boring GE very bearable. He gives you all the opportunities you need to succeed in the class. If you study hard and do the aplia, it is very possible to do well.
Sexton is the bomb. He makes econ waaaay more bearable than I thought it would be. Reading before the classes helps a lot while he's explaining. Take notes and read to help with the aplia assignments. He's an extremely understanding professor and helps keep it interesting and memorable.
tough class, but a lot of opportunities for help. tests are hard and the aplia is practically self taught.
Pretty good
Sexton is an incredible teacher. I was dreading taking ECON in the summer, but he makes it enjoyable and easy to pay attention to. His charisma and jokes, the usual video clip to help you remember the material are very helpful when dreading this GE. The test aren't too difficult, but studying is required.
Dr. Sexton is a great professor. Reading the book is important to pass but the most important part is to DO THE APLIA. If you would not be catching up with your homework and procrastinate you would not get the desired grade. Do all the APLIA chapters before the tests on these chapters and get an "A" in this class like I did.
Dude's the man. I normally don't go out of my way to rate professors unless theyre reeally bad or reallyy good. And Sexton's one of the better professors at Pepperdine for sure. Just don't blow off studying for any of the tests cuz you'll wanna put this class on the backburner but if you do it'll add alot of unneeded stress for the final.
don't take it at 8 am, you need time to devote yourself to the class and to do all the homework assignments and you will need the textbook to basically teach yourself. If you are not big on economics or math, and you're not willing to put a whole lot of time in to do HELLA homework then you should save yourself the trouble.
His lectures are very fast and hard to follow. NOTE: DO NOT RELY ON THE FINAL! He will tempt you with the fact that you can take the grade on your final and make it your grade in the class plus aplia, but the final is WAY harder than the rest of the tests. Do your best on the other 3 tests and don't leave the aplia for the last second.
Somewhat funny, lectures are easy since they're based on the book. Make sure you pay attention to the graphs. Might tease you lightly if you show up late.
The professor needs to reevaluate his expectations for Pepperdine students' sanity. ECON 200 is the worst course I have ever taken and deciding to take it was the worst academic decision I have ever made in my life.
Dr. Bob is one of the most hilariously entertaining professors I've ever had, but at the same time he's an incredibly demanding professor and takes economics very seriously. His approach is essentially the epitome of "work hard, play hard." My biggest issue with ECON 416 was that the final counted for 80% of your grade (yes, you read that right)...
LOVE Sexton!! This class is impossible to fail! He gave us huuuge curves (eventhough not as huge as the class last year). Some people might say that his exams are hard but I think this is cause his exams are only about 33 questions so you only can miss about 6 to get an A (considering he gave 10-14% curve). Also he never puts your grades on courses
If you get his tests from last year youll be fine and never have to go to class to get an A. If not youll have to work pretty hard and know the material extremely well. 3rd test is the hardest. Dont do homework the night before.
took the 8 AM for GE and probably shouldn't have. the lectures are super fast paced so don't rely on them and his slides are straight out of the textbook. tries to be funny but not really. DO THE APLIA! SERIOUSLY! its way more helpful than the lectures. definitely study unless you're just good at econ.
hated the class, so boring. he usually gives a small curve but don't rely on it.
had to study a lot and his tests are pretty hard. tries too hard to make it fun
He makes an 8AM GE as amusing as it can be. Tests are very difficult but he gives $20 to the top grade(s). His graphs are confusing on the Powerpoint, but the textbook covers them in better clarity. He curves each test by 6-10 points. Final is optional.
I had Dr Sexton in both undergrad and grad school. In the grad class, he made sure you understood what you got wrong on the midterm and WHY. He took the time to review every question and ensure comprehension. If you did better on the final, the midterm didn't count. The idea is that he cares about what you know by the end of the semester. GREAT!
Only graded on three exams. Nice person, not a great prof. Just speeds through his textbook slides. Needs to slow down and thoroughly explain because ECON is confusing! Go to tutoring, study hard, and read because you teach yourself in this class.
Funny guy but this class is impossible. You basically have to teach yourself from his textbook and lectures are kind of a joke because he doesn't actually teach you anything himself. He's a sweet guy and really smart, but if you don't have an econ brain then it'll be hard work. His test format is fair, but when we switched to online it was whack.
his tests will often be tricky, he really knows how to expose your gaps and separate the 90's from the 100's. the library tutors are gonna be pretty huge if you're going for an A, but overall, this is one of the easier econ classes at Pepperdine. if you can find someone with copies of his test from last year, that's huge bc he doesn't change much
Honestly was really disappointed with how this class was handled in lieu of Covid. There are no lectures over zoom, and office hours aren't even with the professor himself, but TAs instead. For somebody with no economic experience, but simply needing to take the class for the credit, it's extremely hard to learn such abstract concepts this way.
If you enjoy having no direction from a professor, then this course is for you. He really doesn't even try to teach the class, I have not heard from him once. Very disappointed and feels like a waste of my tuition money. Practically paying thousands of dollars to completely teach myself a concept. I'm sure he's a great guy, but I've never seen him.
Dr. Sexton is great, but don't take his online classes, he doesn't teach. His office hours are TAs. I've only see him once for the entire semester. Textbook and homework are written by him. The course is made up by homework and 3 exams.
Kids really be out here hating on sexton for teaching a tough class. That ain't his fault. His lectures do sound an lot like the textbook, since he wrote the book, but TAs can help a lot in office hours. Tests will make ya think about little details for sure, but if you can't ace his tests, then you don't deserve an A in an Econ class anyway
To all Pepperdine students, if you do not like economics, do NOT take this class. Sexton doesn't appeal to students well and his lectures, graphs, and textbooks DO NOT HELP AT ALL. Just do yourself a favor and don't take the class unless your degree needs it.
I took this class online, from home, during the pandemic and the professor essentially left us on our own to try and pass the class. There were no consistent lectures, we were basically just left to read his textbook and pay for a homework service which was way more expensive than any of my other classes. The teacher showed no interest in teaching.
I took ECON 200 this fall semester online. It's part of the Human Institutions and Behavior GE requirement. If you are not interested in economics, SKIP THIS GE AND TAKE SOC/PSYCH INSTEAD!!! Unfortunately I was assigned this class and didn't know I didn't have to take it until after add/drop. No lectures, you have to teach yourself (hard material).
If you can take any other professor or course, DO IT. I've heard Sexton is a great teacher in person, but his online course begs to differ. We were practically left to teach ourselves. Not once did we actually meet to have a live class. The Aplia will take you at least an hour (probably more). Please, just save yourself the time and stress.
good LUCK
3 tests compose the grade. The test is not very hard as long as you read the textbook and listen to his lecture.
Do not take this class. There are three tests and an optional final exam. Don't rely on the final or the grading curve. They won't help you too much. You're gonna have to study night and day to get an A. He is a nice person but not a good teacher.
To sum up, you spend hundreds of dollars on a book, and then you teach yourself economics completely independently. I have heard Sexton's voice ONCE in my whole life, on the first day of class. For the rest of the semester everyone teaches themselves from the textbooks, then has three major exams that make up your entire grade. just don't.
Professor Sexton is average at best. The textbook is basically the same thing he teaches in class, so it feels worthless doing both. His tests were not easy, and I definitely wouldn't take this class if I didn't have to. Only take this class if you aren't able to find an alternative.
Very clear textbook written by himself. I love the clear examples in the textbook. Really learned a lot!!! Take him!
Hes a really nice guy who makes a lot of jokes. My advice is to not go to class but watch the recorded videos of the class so you can slow it down and take notes. Tests are pretty hard, but the two tests I studied for I got a 100 with the curve.
Great guy! Just read a textbook and you will be good! He makes a lot of jokes, and his lectures go fast.
Great guy!!!! He is very very funny guy. I would say probably one of the best professors ever here. His tests are not hard, if you study, read his book, and go to lectures. His lectures are easy to understand and easy to understand what he is talking about.
Professor Sexton is easily the funniest professor I have had here. His lectures are very entertaining, but he can rush through content sometimes which can make it harder to understand. However, he gives very generous grading curves on his exams. If you read the textbook, go to class, and study for the exams you will do well.
Professor Sexton is wonderful! I highly recommend you take his Econ200 class!
While I liked Professor Sexton as a person, being a first-year in his class was a lot. All of his grades were based on three tests or you could choose the final to be your overall grade. He moves very quickly over the topics and expects students to be able to understand economics from the book, which for me, just wasn't possible.
If you show up to class and read the textbook then you will get an A. All the tests are curved super generously (the average curve in my class per test was 20%), and all the content is straightforward. The professor is easygoing and accessible, and he dedicates a lecture to review before each exam. There are no assignments and 3 exams.
Dr. Sexton is the type of professor who makes learning an enjoyable experience! He is very personable. If you go to his office hours, he will inspire you to want to learn more! I strongly recommend taking his classes!! You will need to read the material on your own, but you will also learn so much just by attending class and taking good notes!
Type of Professor who reads power point slides instead of explaining the material. You basically have to teach yourself. Tests are extremely hard but he gives really good curves. On the first test it was 18 point for the curve. Read read READ and STUDY from the book and the practice tests on courses.
Professor Sexton was a nice guy, but not a great teacher. He expects you learn the material straight away from the slides. He will talk over it and then skip over the slides and say "we already talked about it," so you have to listen to be able to take notes. Tests are curved a lot, though, but your whole grade is just 3 tests.
Go to his office hours. Test's are hard, but use the practice tests to get a feel for what they will be like. READ THE TEXTBOOK. It actually helps. Go to tutoring!
Sexton is passionate and funny and gives put cash to ppl who answer questions in class. Attendance not mandatory but you HAVE TO GO. The lectures are the exact same as textbook, but I struggled teaching myself the material. 4 exams and a final. This class stresses me out so much, but I'm also just not good at econ. Take this class at your own risk.
I wasn't a big fan of him. You can either have your entire grade is based off of 4 exams or the cumulative final exam. I asked him for clarification on something once and he told me that I should be asking the student success center. I wouldn't want him as a professor again.
Professor Sexton is great at the teaching Economics. Despite that the course could be difficult since the class is only graded on an average of 3 exam grades or you can opt out to take a cumulative final exam. He does do generous curves though. Attendance isn't mandatory but going to lectures helps majorly, also he provides a free copy of the book!
The class is straightforward if you read the textbook and attend lectures. Tests are curved generously, making it manageable. unstuck AI was a helpful tool for exam prep.
this class grade is based on either 3 tests or one final. if you are willing to study hard for the three tests and basically teach yourself the material it is easy. Sexton is a passionate and funny professor, but the class was at 8 am which made learning the material hard to learn lol. overall if you put the work in it's an easy and fun class!
This class is genuinely tough, there are only 3 exams and no homework to help cushion your grade. The class average each exam is about a high 60, low 70. Also, the professor can be a bit insensitive, often making snarky remarks to his TA and students. When you approach him for feedback, even sincerely, he dismisses you and sends you to the TA.
Sexton is a great guy, great teacher. I truly do feel as though I learned so much in his class, but it personally took a lot of effort. Exams might have changed since I took the class, but they are pretty straightforward and similar to the lectures.
