Shanab makes Phil 102 much harder than it really is. If you need help, you can't get it from him. He is rude to students, and very difficult to understand. When I dropped his class, I had close to a D, with a different (better) teacher, I passed with an A

Shanab is boring, unclear and rude to his students. I took over the summer and I couldn't handle him five days a week. The material wasn't difficult, but Shanab made it seem that way.

Shanab isn't the greatest teacher, but he seems to try to help you if you make the effort as well. It is hard to understand him and read his writing... but if you really want to learn the material... you read the chapters and learn that way.

This teacher repeated the same material over and over each day adding little new information which made the class boring. He would get irritated at students for coughing and sneezing and he thought we didn't like him because he was a foreigner.

This guy was one of the worst teachers ive had at UNLV. He is not a bad person, but he was not all there. You can barely understand the guy, and his grading system is absolute garbage. Avoid this class like you would radioactive waste.

This teacher was absolutely horrible. I had an A in his class. There was no way in hell that I failed in final, so imagine my surprise when I got a C in the class. He curved all grades according to his scale, highest=C, but I need a C+ for my major.

First of all understand this, Professor Shanab isn't a bad guy. He is extremely difficult, very hard on his grading, & doesn't help much But, if you can manage to STAY AWAKE & listen to what he says, read the material, learn it on your then you'll pass.

I dont think he's a bad guy, he just doesnt teach well. First of all the final was hard as hell. And our grade depended on a midterm and a final and some paper. HE doesnt help much, and sometimes talks**** about his students. HEHE. I know. The hardest class ever.

Professor Shanab is very knowledgeable, but a bit scatterbrained. As long as you show some sort of understanding and interest in his class you should not have a hard time. Learn to appreciate his ways and you shouldn't have a problem. I love this guy.

This guy is incompetent. Spends 15 min of every class putting down students. Tests are unfair. Makes you take midterm as a GROUP then punishes absent students by presenting 'unique' lecture info that will now appear on the test that you have to take as group. Make sense to you? Is that logical?

he was a very good teacher. A little hard to understand at times but helped you to better understand the material. tests were extremely fair. those who complained about him were simply lazy. you will come out of his class knowing alot more then you think. very applicable to everyday life. good teacher make sure you do ALL of your work.

I'm a premed student, so naturally I have taken many difficult classes so far (Organic chemistry anyone)and I've never received a lower grade than A-. In this class however I got a B. He is so unclear, and offers no help when it comes to preparation for the test. I've read that book at least twice before the final, and it DID NOT help me. AVOID HIM

Complained about his past student reviews, how the students were unfair to him, for at least the first 20 minutes of each classtime. Then proceeded to offer no help in clarifying anything and ended the class by stating that it is not his fault that half his students seem to barely pass or not pass at all. Its not worth the time/money/effort.

I HATE THIS GUY!!!!! He was so hard to understand, I'm pretty sure he put booze in his morning coffee, and he stunk like a dumpster. He jumped right into fallacies before even telling us what one was. Group midterm was AWFUL!

Ok, so this was an interesting class. But the coolest part was that he allowed us to negotiate our grade at the end. I should have got a C, but got a B+. Awesome.

Professor might be way out there, but he jokes and he grades great!We took GROUP tests!! And he has mentioned that he will be negotiating our grades with us also at the end, based on our performance (attendance and participation in extra credit). Awesome!! Easy guy!

Prof. Shanab actually knows what he's talking about, but he's very bitter toward past students who criticized him. If you want to do well in the course-- get with a smart group (all the graded assignments are group assignments), and do the extra credit! He'll also really like you if you stop by during his office hours to ask him questions.

He has not changed since his older responses except for his grading. He is still rude to students and talks (in EVERY class) about how everyone will fail. Nice huh? The department final is totally different than what he teaches. Says he never gives A's, however, he passes everyone with a C.

Hmm, I don't understand the previous comments. Shanab was nice and pretty funny in my class. He gives up to a whole letter grade worth of extra credit so make sure to take advantage of it. All tests are group tests and all are easy except for the final which is hard. All and all this was an easy A and I would definitely recommend him.

Dr. Shanab is quite possibly one of the worst instructors at UNLV. He is rude and he gives his opinions where they are not necessary. His accent is hard to understand also.

Professor Shanab is a really nice guy, and he really knows his****. He may not be the most interesting professor, but he is easy, and extremely nice and light-hearted. It is an easy EASY class, but you still learn. I would recommend him if you're just taking this class as a requirement, but if it is your major you may want to find someone else.

I've just finished phi 102. He was an excellent teacher and really encouraged the students to learn the material. He tells you what you need to learn and understand without actually handing you the test (as some other professors do). Also, take advantage of his extra credit. Shanab is extremely kind & motivated to teach. I had an excellent semester

anyone who says bad things about shanab is just ignorant. they probably are used to other teachers at this university who don't challenge them to learn anything. i learned a lot in this class and it was actually really fun. shanab is not only a great person and quite the comedian but he is really knowledgeable about this topic.

The person who says that people who don't like Shanab are ignorant, is a complete idiot!! Shanab is old, senile, and incoherent. Philosophy is a very interesting subject, if you are actually being taught philosophy!! He used the same examples everyday, there was absolutely no structure, & he was extremely unhelpful and hard to understand. BEWARE!!!

Worst class ever! Very confusing and boring subject. Shanab is a nice guy though, he tries. The final is departmental and it is horrible. You take it in a group and still have no understanding as to why you did so bad. I think the class in general is ridiculous, mine as well take shanab, i've heard worse about other professors.

i really dont know how i got a B in this class. He jumps all over the book, but if he sees youre trying and show up a lot he'll boost your grade a whole letter as extra credit. get into a good group in the begining of the semester because your whole grade pretty much depends on them. one group project, one group midterm, and a long final.

I took him in the summer. I learned very little. EXTRA CREDIT IS NOT OPTIONAL IT SAVED MY GRADE! show up to class, do the hw in advance, and find the arguments he tells you to look up for the EC. groups for the test and project. partner for final. (make sure you have a good group)

I LOVE SHANAB! he is so sweet. If you go to class and do his simple extra credit you will learn what you need to pass. He is funny and sweet. His one rule is no talking besides that you can do what you like. the extra credit oportunities are amazing.

Useless, I got a B- which irks me. The professor is extremely hard to follow and jumps from one topic to another. He never understands what the student is asking. For teaching arguments, he is HORRIBLE at clarity. the grammar used in class is off. be aware and use the book because he is useless at explaining. If you can help it, don't take him.

He doesn't get off topic but he is hard to follow. If you don't know what you are doing in philosophy I recommend you take this class with a different professor. However, he is very nice and will try to help students. 1 group paper, groups work on the midterm, and you work in partners for the final.

If you value your (high) GPA DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He's really a very sweet man but he's been teaching for 45 years & it seems that he hasn't changed his teaching style within those 4 decades. I'm an 'A' student but with all the stupid group projects, his incomprehensibility along with overall confusion, I have a high probability of getting a 'C'!

This class is hard, but it's not the professor's. its just hard subject matter, but he'll help if you ask and pay attention for the WHOLE CLASS. do the exercises and he moves u up a whole letter grade. just expect to dedicate some time to it.

My interest level in philosophy is very low. That being said, the way he organizes this class helps you if you know how to work it. I did well by establishing a partner right away. Work with the same person on everything. Read and do the examples in the text together. Remember this is college, that means you may need put in some time to get an A.

Philosophy is not an easy subject matter, however mr.shanab knows what he is talking about and is passionate about what he teaches. He also gives tons of extra credit, and is willing to help anyone who needs help. People are too hard on him just because he has an accent, you can still understand what he is saying if you pay attention and read

This is guy is so unhelpful and RUDE! If anyone asks a question, he usually gives the answer with no explanation and laughs in their face as if to say they were stupid. Also, I miss 1 day of class and ask what we had to do that day and he said that I "need to stop sh*ting around"?? Don't waste your time & money on this guy, BELIEVE ME!!!

If you are looking for fair grading don't take him. A class of 28 and still didn't know a single name at the end of the semester. His explanations are very unclear. Half of the time class was more then pointless

He is a very interesting guy if you pay attention to what he is saying. He does go off topic a little at times but he's usually trying to draw a line with what he is teaching and another topic. You have read the fallacies and understand what they are and where to find them to do well. It's mostly a group effort so pick your teammates wisely.

He is a foreign guy who is quirky and obsessed with his grand daughter. He is a good guy but is a little bit hard to understand because he has an accent and speaks quietly. Older gentleman. The class is simple if you attend class and pay attention. He tends to repeat himself a lot and so class can get dull.

He explained everything crystal clear then grades on an entirely diff scale. I'm an A student but ended up with a B...its easy enough to make a B with a 10 person midterm group, and a partner on the final, also if you do your homeork you can move up a full letter grade, but dont think his exams will be like the homework, or even like each other!

I absolutely LOVE this professor. He's rather intriguing. He is dead set on covering the materials repetitively until students are able to comprehend it. Personally, one time is good enough...but he will repeat it over and over again. He is VERY helpful. He is a hard grader.

This teacher is awful. I've been in the class all of 4 weeks and I can't stand being there. He is inconsistent with his explanations. He is hard to understand and interrupts students. He is rude to students. He teaches by the book but will add his spin on things which is confusing because he will "argue" that his answer is better. Don't take him.

At first I was very excited for his class. He dresses like Indiana Jones and seemed to have a funny personality. As time went on he started to rub me the wrong way. He is inconsistent with the book. He says to follow the book but also says to do it his way because it's better. Needless to say I'm completely confused and debating dropping.

Professor Shanab, is an amazing teacher. He's knowledge in philosophy really opened my mind and inspired me to major in it. If you actually pay attention and do the work you will get the grade YOU EARNED! He's really supportive and gives a interesting lecture. I really enjoyed this class and I definitely recommend taking him!

I don't know how many of the people who commented on this saying they are majoring in Philosophy will actually go on to earn a degree in it. This teacher is terrible, contradictory, and uses the fallacy of appeal to pity to get you to like him. He is an awful, lost, rude teacher who will bore you to sleep with his reiterations.

Older gentleman that has been teaching over 40 years at UNLV. His enthusiasm has gotten watered down and he does not know anyone's name. Whenever you ask him to clarify a question, he bashes you and just states the same thing over again more angrily. I would not recommend taking this professor, although he does offer homework for extra credit.

Yes, his lectures are boring, but that's because he tends to repeat concepts that will be important in his exams to make sure that everyone gets it. Sometimes, his instructions can be a bit muddled, but overall, he really knows his stuff and is more than willing to help one-on-one. Also, he lets you work with a partner on the Final - choose wisely.

I see many reviews about his class being hard and difficult to understand, and that is no lie. But being completely HONEST, I did nothing in this class the whole semester, didn't read, didn't study, sat on my computer in the back, and passed with a B. He may seem super strict but if you come to class everyday and laugh at his jokes you'll be fine.

Professor Shanab has been doing this a long time. He is very fluent in the subject matter and even wrote the text for the class. The subject matter was difficult to grasp at first, but through the repetitiveness of the homework I finally got it. Dr Shanab is not easy, but you will learn the subject. I would take his class again.

Show up to every class, participate in the lectures, and do your homework. If you do these things you will be 100% ok. The negative reviews are mostly from younger students who choose to skip class and expect an easy A. This is a University level class, respect that

He's very misunderstood but a fantastic professor. He knows the subject well. The negative reviews are from people who did not put in the extra effort for clarificationhelp. Do the homework, it says its "optional" but it will help you learn the topics and its all extra credit at the end of the semester. Utilize his office hours!

Professor Shanab is a great professor. He made this whole semester fairly easy with his explanations. If you follow his instructions and actually take the time to read the textbook and do your homework, you'll have no problem. He likes when students engage in the class and he basis his extra credit off of that. Tests are taken in groups.

Homework 3 - 4 times (all for extra credit only). A lot of group work and tests 2 (midterm and final). His lectures are clear, however, his tests can be a bit confusion and worded differently than they are during lectures ( this caused me to get a C). Pay attention, do the homework, do the extra credit and you will be ok. He is so nice and patient.

Dr. Shanab is a little rough around the edges but by the end of the semester, you'll learn to appreciate him. One of the hardest things to get past is his accent but if you actually pay attention, you'll understand him. His class wasn't super easy but if you attend the lectures and DO THE HOMEWORK, you'll leave the class with a lot of knowledge.

Professor Shanab knows what he is talking about. He wrote the book you use in class. As long as you come to class, do the homework, and participate you will be fine. He is tough due to the accent but has 50 yrs of experience. HW is EC and can make or break you. Also exams (excluding final) are group exams. You get what you put into the class.

If you do the HW he will raise your grade by a whole letter since its extra credit, and its graded on completeness, not correctness. You dont have to do the readings to understand, just come to class and listen. Only two tests- midterm and final. Both can be taken in groups or you can work alone if you want. Easiest A of my life! Great professor.

Take his class if you want to be challenged, and learn philosophy and critical thinking from an experienced philosophy professor. He is a great teacher and willing to help with your questions if you're not afraid to ask. He is a nice teacher with a good sense of humor who really wants students to learn how to think critically and objectively.

The professor cares about his students. If you want to learn something, this is the professor to take. I like the book he assigned. Helps explain the concepts. He treats us like adults and allows us to use our own examples, once approved, and I appreciate that.

Professor Shanab is very knowledgeable in the subject matter. If you want to really learn the foundational principles to logic and critical thinking this class is for you. Listen carefully and be patient as the content is a bit thick and as you get deeper into the semester the rules to teasing out an argument become more challenging.

Dr. Shanab is very old school. Nothing is on Web Campus, not even the syllabus. There are two exams plus the final, and depending on how your class is doing during lectures, he may or may not allow the first two exams to be taken in groups. The group format of the first two exams makes them pretty easy, but they do a poor job of preparing for final

This guy is a great teacher, you are paying for college so going to class an doing homework should be mandatory, aside from common sense, read the book and the homework you will go great He is very friendly and vey resaonbale so there should be no reason to get anything less than a C . I would absolutely take another class from him. TAKE THE CLASS!

Mr. Shanab is a very caring professor. The material taught was very interesting and worthwhile. It will definitely help for the future. There are 3 tests. 2 tests which you can do in groups which were free response, each worth 30% of the grade. The final was multiple choice 40% of the grade. Gives extra credit up to one letter grade

I took Professor Shanab for a required Phil 102 course on Logic about 3 years ago. The information that he taught to me then is a huge part of everything I do to this day. His course was a masterful introduction to rhetoric. Who would not want to master this? His instruction was priceless. His accent is thick, but if you aren't racist he is amazing

Professor Shanab has lived a life of overcoming adversity. He would stand tall with you in any situation where you needed Help. In fact, he may use a very considerable subject matter during the course to help you identify. He somehow kept my old van running I would gladly take any other course he was teaching in the future. Professor Shanab is great, thoughtful lecturer. He cares about his students' performance and wants them to succeed. You get exactly what you put into this class; you read assigned chapters and practise the assigned homework, you'll do very well on the first two exams. the final is a department final and is relatively harder, so be prepared.

Entire grade consists of (2) group exams and (1) final exam. Extra credit is offered and could help the final grade improve by one letter grade. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I suggest attending if you want to earn an A. Final exam is difficult, but do the extra credit and you should earn a decent grade. The class started out very vague, but over time, the material gets much more easier and interesting. There are 3 tests, two of them are purely written, but you get an opportunity to take them with a partner The Final is multiple choice, but it is written by the philosophy department, and it is significantly more difficult than the 1st two tests

Very nice professor. Outlines the percentage of each assignment in the syllabus. Homework is graded through participation, by participating you get extra credit. For the two first tests you can work in a group and have to only analyze two different arguments. Gives many opportunities in which students can improve their grade.

If youre not understanding the material, dont even bother asking for help. He would rather complain about how easy it is and how many times hes already explained the material (which is not accurate), than to help you better understand. He speaks extremely quiet, even if you ask him to project.

Professor Shanab has been my favorite teacher at UNLV so far. He is very accessible and is great with the students, most of the work done is in class. Test's are grouped so you have multiple viewpoints. Super friendly and funny but is really serious about his teaching. As long as your respectful and you have the books you will pass this class.

Shanab is by far the best teacher UNLV has to offer. If you are looking for a "Easy Pass" Shanab is your guy, as long as you show up most days and participate in group activities you will pass. Dr. Shanab is an OUTSTANDING professor. He is very genuine and intelligent. He teaches everything so that even a circus monkey could learn it if they payed attention. Pick a good group to join that does their homework and you will be all set for the exams. Do the homework for the extra credit points (no brainer). If you can't hear him, tell him. :)

Dr. Shanab is a truly fantastic professor. Lectures are fun, engaging, and everyone is encouraged to contribute during discussions. Complete the weekly homework and attend class regularly to ace the exams (which consist of two midterms and a final). If you genuinely want to learn about rhetoric and philosophy, take Dr. Shanab ASAP!

Dr. Shanab is a great professor who made class both informative and entertaining. You will have to learn the material he is trying to teach, but he makes it easy as long as you show up to class, pay attention, and/or very thoroughly read the book on your own. DO THE HOMEWORK! It is counted for extra credit. Two exams before the final exam. The two exams are really easy, they are NOTHING like the final exam. The final exam is solo and is really hard, study! You NEED the textbooks to do the homework directly on it so he will count it towards extra credit, doesn't accept it if it is on a separate paper

Really great Professor. There are weekly homework assignments, but he does not grade on accuracy! Do the homework and you will receive extra credit that can bump your grade up a full letter. Shanab is a decent professor. His lectures could be better and more structured. 2 groups exams/1 solo final. Groups exams are easy but final is hard. There is extra credit for doing homework and participating BUT its a his discretion so dont count on it too much. Be sure to participate if you want that extra credit! Itll save your grade.

Tells you attendance and homework isn't mandatory but if you don't do the homework he makes you work alone on group exams. Lectures are literally going over the HW the entire class, tends to speak quietly/repeat himself. Nice professor, monotone voice. Gives extra credit points if you do your homework, which he gives often, and EC for class participation. You will need 2 books, in which you will write in. You don't have to go class, but I highly recommend it! Class is overall a good one, I got the grade I got because I got lazy towards the end and stopped going.

He talks incredibly quiet, is hard to understand, & has no visual aid to support the lectures. Requires u to buy 2 very expensive books, out of which u barely end up using 1. He has 2 ridiculously expensive textbooks with no resale value, he talks SO quietly so unless you're in his mouth you won't hear him. He has no visuals except very badly written hw on the board. This is the worst class I have ever taken at UNLV. This Professor makes you buy two insanely expensive textbooks. He has no structure to his class, there are no notes or visual aids, nor any sort of study guide for the tests. His class is an hour of listening to him ramble about unclear subject matter. DON'T TAKE! You're better off with an online class. You can't hear him, he has no learning materials- just sits there and talks. I had to drop because I missed a day where we were assigned testing groups and then he made me test alone which messed up my grade. 2 useless workbooks that are $175 written by him. It's just full of examples- no lessons.

This class is very simple: 6 tests and that's it. My class was moved online and all the grades are based on tests. Optional homework and attendance. Tests are only 10 questions each. Two overpriced textbooks but if done right can pass the class easily. Just watch for the test difficulty.

Took this class for 2023 spring semester & it was the easiest class I've taken. There's no weekly assignments, just 5 handouts that you digitally submit at the end of the semester (easy if you just read the handouts he posts), 30 question true or false mid-term & final. You really don't even need to buy the textbook either. Definitely recommend.

Course was easy not a lot of work but the only thing is there is only 3 things that he grades 2 exams and handouts at the end of the semester. Sounds great but there is not much room for error and if you get one low grade on either of the exam your basically done for. There is no extra credit everything was graded at the end of the semester.

This class is only graded by 3 things: midterm, final, and 5 worksheets. This online class was a blessing because the work wasn't too heavy. While there isn't much room for error, this was a huge help for me because it let me focus on my other classes geared towards my major.
