Excellent professor. Easygoing, excited about subject, great at teaching, really helps you learn subject. Highly recommend his Chinese Thought prosem.
Bob Shep is the man!
Great guy, very friendly; however, becareful about your grades i got screwed over for my final grade.
Chinese Philosophy was great with him. The prosems normally are worthless but his was engaging. He is on the easy end of grading but you still WANT to work for it. By letting us do a rough draft he also helped improve my writing skills.
Shep is awesome! He makes you turn in rough drafts, then gives back comments, and you can make an A on your final papers if you just follow his advice from the rough draft.
Took him for Prosem Honr 15 aka Early Chinese Thought. Pretty easy--you can hand in a rough draft which gets peer-graded and then you correct it and hand it in for a guaranteed A/A-. You don't even have to read; just pay attn in class. Great guy!
Hated the class.
The Man!
Amazing Anthropology teacher... if you do most of your reading and are able to write the English language with some proficiency you are guaranteed an A or A-. I'd minor in Shepology.
The class started off a little slow, but as we've gotten into it I like it more and more. He's a great guy but class can be a little dull sometimes depending on the reading and how people respond. There is a lot of reading but you can get away with not having it all done by class. B+/A-/A grades
I really dislike anthropology, and it is mainly because of the way this man presents it. Not very understanding unless he likes you. If he doesn't like you, or you do something to tick him off, you are screwed.
Great class. very open to other's opinions but does not tolerate ignorant chatter. Vey good with names and getting to know each student one on one. Tells alot of personal storeis that relate to the class
One of my favorite GW profs. Great class discussions and really helpful. Do the reading because he gets annoyed when people aren't prepared, and WORK HARD ON THE ROUGH DRAFT because it guarantees you an A on the major project. Can't stay enough nice things about this guy.
he's a good guy, you don't have to do the readings, but they aren't that bad even if you do...just give him what he wants on the papers, which is a lot of quotes from the readings..peace out
Fun teacher, very enthusiastic and engaging. He does a good job using an overhead projector and he posts his notes online. You HAVE to read the books in order to do well, as he makes you write a paper on each. Still, great teacher that taught me a lot about Southeast Asia
Helpful, Clear. Class is easy if you do what he asks. Take any class with him that you can.
Great professor! Very intelligent and enthusiastic. He really encourages group discussion, and is very interested in getting to know his students. He will teach you a lot! The papers are okay, if you write exactly what he wants.
This class was a lot of fun to take, and really developed my interest in the subject. Prof. Shepherd shows a genuine enthusiasm for the subject, which makes the class even more fun. Really enjoyed myself!
Slightly left-wing in his lectures, but generally recpetive of other world views. Assigns some terribly boring readings. But very nice guy, very understanding, and a good lecturer. He makes you want to work hard because you don't want to disappoint him, even though you're likely to get an A anyways. Good class.
One of my favorite professors. Very articulate...knows what he's talking about and fields questions well. Relates well with students. Grades pretty easily but assigns a good chunk of reading (and not the Harry Potter kind).
Knows lots about Development because he's done it. A great lecturer who loves students, he's extremely accessible and friendly, and you'll learn a lot. The fact that he doesn't have tenure yet is one of the great mysteries of this world.
He's a good guy but I feel that there are a lot of tangents during class time, and the essay prompts don't leave a lot of room for originality.
Great professor - lot of reading though - I mean A LOT - if you'll do well in the class.
The past classes I have had with Shepherd have been awesome. But Dev't Anth was a huge let down. The readings were tremendously boring. The final paper was horrible to write because the question was unclear to many students. He presented Development as a worthless field that has contributed nothing to the world. Take the class with someone else.
Yes, Prof. Shepherd is knowledgeable about anthro and development, but writing papers for his classes are torture; his questions like his lectures, are so vague and overwritten, and tangential, the more you try to figure out what your're writing the less you understand what he's asking! Pretty dry reading and lectures. Eh.
This class was not what I expected at all. He totally ruined my view on development and world aid agencies... its was disappointing to say the least. You write 3 papers for the class, no exams... but these papers are KILLER... like so hard! The final esp. becuase he is so vague, it is hard to know what he is even asking. Not an easy class!
I hated this class and I hated the way he taught it. I found him to be very arrogant in his teaching methods and just an all around dissappointment. He gives the appearance of being really nice but I could get past the terrible paper assignments and elementary teaching activities. Absolutely hated this class.
Thanks to this class, I am proud to have my very first C in college and I am a Senior. I could not understand his notes, 75% of his readings were long and uninteresting, and the topics of his essays were unclear - making them hard to write and easier to get a bad grade....He is a nice guy but hates Int'l Affairs majors -but loves Anth majors-Avoid!
Terrible teacher, great guy. He has very set opinons and not not at all open. Lectures and class discussions are all over the place, as are the readings. Papers come out of the blue, unrelated to any other course materials. The paper topics are vague, but he wants very specific things. Impossible to get an A, unless you are Asian or an Antro major.
I loved his class. Yes, you have to read many books throughout the semester (lots of reading), but his lectures are very clear and straighfoward and exams are ok if you study. Not very easy, but not hard either. Very nice guy and is there if you need him, during office hours and after class
Shepherd, oh Shepherd...great guy and great professor. He actually cares about what he is teaching and he does not hate anybody and does not hate IA majors. He makes you think and isn't that what you're supposed to do in college? Hard grader and read or you will have no idea whats going on. If you want to think, take his class.
Great, caring professor. Genuinely interested in his subject matter and it shows. As mentioned, there is a lot of reading, which I put off until the paper (3 papers), but I wish I did it as assigned. I agree: he will make you think, but he is not a harsh grader. If you are interested in human rights, take the class.
great prof; really made me think and expand my notion of human rights; quite a bit of reading but if you space it out, it's fine; need the reading for papers so recommended to do it as you go through the class; really knowledgeable and organized; not that much discussion; overall a really great class; fair grader
Genuinely nice guy. You can't help but like him even if sometimes you wonder what the point of some of his lectures are. Pretty funny and easygoing in class, likes to joke around with the students. He comes off little odd at first but he totally grew on me. Like him a lot.
He seems perfectly nice, but he doesn't help at all. I went to his office hours three times for help on a paper and he just talked to me about what I planned to major and hardly addressed the paper. His grading style is incomprehensible. I was interested in Anthro before I took this class. Now I hate it.
Great guy. Lectures are somewhat confusing, but you get the idea that it's just because he knows so much and wants to teach you everything. 4 papers and a presentation. Lots of reading. Great class, one of my favorites so far.
he is very helpful, extremely intelligent and well spoken, funny, and likes his students. He doesnt grade that hard either. very interesting class
PHENOMENAL professor, probably my favorite at GW. He keeps everyone engaged and delves into some really fascinating and new material. Grading is tough, but you should expect a lot from yourself after taking his courses! He fully prepares you for the essays and tells you exactly what to write.
nice guy but babbled too much for me. probably should have a background in asian studies or have gone somewhere in asia because from the beginning it felt as if a prerequisite to the class was needed even tho it wasn't. too many books to read in too little time
Some of the test were confusing, in the end it is very helpful if you want to go into working in the Emergency Department. His class prepares you well for not only the ED but for other departments.
He does talk/ramble but if you pay attention, he writes your papers that make the grade. The reading is alot but try and skim and/or bookmark the pages he mentions in class because it comes in handy when having to cite pages. He's a pretty easy grader as long as you give him what he's looking for which he will basically tell if you talk to him.
decent. Really stubborn.
I just didn't think he taught the topic very well. He has a great resume and has done really interesting stuff, but the class was all lecture and not very engaging. His slides don't always make sense if you are trying to go back and reference things for your papers. He expects you to understand the paper topics w/o explaining them first.
he is by far one of my favorite professors at this school, he is extremely knowledgeable and teaches in a way that gets you interested in the course
This guy is out of control. I saw him reduce a student to tears because she had a different point of view than his. It was shocking. He can be very irrational so watch out!
Great class and Shepherd is extremely knowledgable about the subject matter. There are 3 papers with relatively easy prompts, just make sure to answer all aspects of the question and you'll get an A.
Great professor. He really knows what he's talking about. This is my second class with him and both required only 3 papers. They aren't the easiest, but it's the only work you have to do for the semester. Take him!
Fantastic professor. He comes off like a jerk at first, but really just enjoys playing devil's advocate and forces to you have very well considered viewpoints. His class really became fun when we started talking to him like he talked to us and realized that he was joking around rather than being mean. Does tend to ramble a bit, but awesome class
He is EXCELLENT at promoting discussion, so take him if you're in a small Honors class. He is a modest intellectual who will listen to your comments in class and comment constructively on your papers. Each paper is only 5-7 pages long. And he's not "mean" at all; rather, you could easily get stuck in a conversation with him forever b/c he's cool!
Despite the fact that the class is called Ethnography of Asia, his class concentrates only on China. He is passionate about his topic, but his lectures are very boring and the reading is even worse. I wouldn't recommend it but if it fulfills requirements then be my guest. Do the readings because they actually do matter in essays.
SHEPHERD IS GREAT! Fantastic pick for origins. Grade is participation (20%) and 4 papers, each 5-7 pages (20% each). Grades firmly but fairly, paper topics are specific, and he'll read your paper before due date to help improve it. VERY HELPFUL! Lots of discussion, and he asks engaging questions. Nice guy to talk to after class. TAKE HIS CLASS!
I hated this class, it was one sophmoric tangent after another, and promoted poor writing habits. It's not so much Professor Shepherd, though he didn't help, it's partially just the structure of the course. But Shepherd was consistantly off base in his philosophical analysis. He was helpful enough, but always facetious.
Prof. Shepherd is incredible! He brings his experience from the Peace Corps into different discussions and maintains a non-biased view on development. This is one of the best classes I've taken at GW.
Helpful, enthusiastic, intelligent prof. Introduces very interesting theories and one of the best lecturers. Pushes students to think outside the box. There is a lot of reading (that must be done to write the papers well and there's no getting around that) but if you go to class, he will break them down for you.
The class is only 4 papers, 25% each. He takes attendance (but that didn't factor into the grade...) I don't understand his grading as my grades ranged from very bad to very good. Shepherd is very pretentious and lectures were boring. I struggled through this class and did not enjoy any of it.
Very interesting to have a good discussion with. Wouldn't say its easy to talk about the theories he presents though. Very sweet professor with a laid back persona.
Shepherd is a great professor! He takes a genuine interest in his students and tries to make you think in different ways. I would recommend him over any other professor for this course. His assignments can be a little unclear at times, but he is more than willing to work with students and will improve your overall writing.
Professor Shepherd is one of the most unpleasant professors I've come across at GW. He does not recognize hard work, plays favorites, and expects you to have the same knowledge he does - although he's an anthropologist. He has unrealistic expectations and makes condescending comments regularly. Extremely disappointing experience, wouldn't recommend
His lectures are long and boring. Sometimes he lets you leave early, but takes attendance every time. Required to do a lot of reading and he gives a pop quiz if he feels like it. For papers, he is a crazy tough grader and when you meet with him to discuss a paper (before or after you hand it in) he is unhelpful. A lot of work for an ehhh grade.
A lot of reading. Ridiculous amount of reading. Maybe five kids in the class did all the reading and as he began to notice the hostility towards his students began to appear in the form of question attacks. Lectures are long and mandatory. Nice guy, boring course, take the other professor if you can.
A great professor. He is really there for students, really wants improve our learning and expose us to different ways of thinking patiently. Lectures can be a bit hard to follow sometimes but it's because he really wants to make sure we get the points he is trying to say so he expresses his points in different ways. He is a truly nice man too.
He is one of those professors who really encourages you to think. No answer is necessarily correct without thorough argumentative backing- he loves to play Devil's advocate when he calls on you, which I found to be pure pleasure. All in all a thoroughly stimulating experience. Hard work definitely required but worth it. Shepherd is a true scholar.
This was honestly the worst class I have ever taken at GW, but it was required for my concentration. Long, theoretical readings from books assigned daily and Shepherd just rambles about random passages for the entire class time. Discussion was alright. His style made what could have been an interesting class boring and useless in real life.
Interesting class, not too much of a workload. When I went to talk to him about class material I found interesting, he kind of just talked for like an hour and I couldn't get much discussion in. Lots of reading.
The subject is interesting but the readings are dense. Don't worry if you fail the first paper, most people do. As long as you do the readings and follow the instructions step by step you have nothing to worry about. But if you are looking to take an easy anthropology class to fulfill your requirement this is not the one!
Hard, disorganized and boring lecture. If you don't do the reading you'll be even more lost.
He does grade papers harshly, but only because he provides a clear outline of the criteria expected, so not that absurd. Readings can be dense but the discussion sections helps. I found his lectures stimulating and refreshingly non-biased- he encourages dissent. Overall, interesting topic taught by a knowledgeable prof- definitely take!
Good professor. I enjoyed all the readings we had in class.
I had Prof. Shepherd for ANTH 3513 and was not overly happy when I learned he would be teaching the Anth seminar. But, I was completely wrong about him! He turned out to be one of the best professors at GW. Class was interesting, so was reading material, and discussion. He was also very helpful during office hours. I wouldn't change a thing.
Professor Shepherd was one of the worst professors Ive had during my time at GW. Extremely arrogant and boring. He lectures for the entire 2.5 hour long class without a PowerPoint and is hard to follow. I emailed him and he didnt respond for 4 days and when he finally did he sent a really rude response. AVOID at all costs.
I did not enjoy this class. There was minimal room for discussion as he'd always play devil's advocate. He was also a really harsh grader, speaking for myself. The topic if awesome but I did not enjoy his style of teaching.
Avoid this prof!! He makes it hard to understand what he is asking/what he wants to know from students. He does not give clear grading criteria. Once he assigned a paper but did not print out both pages of the instructions, and therefore many of our papers lacked what he was looking for, and STILL graded us with the same criteria. Bad and rude.
This professor made every student in class talk about their home life, and when he heard mine he laughed and was blatantly disrespectful. He was very condescending and, hence, he made it difficult to participate. A girl cried in class. He does not teach material well and he asks a tone of questions but never answers them. Confusing and unhelpful.
Prof. Shepherd is not a good professor. He gives guidelines for his essays but takes off points for not fully understanding topics that the entire class didn't pick up on. He also grades harshly even when you go to office hours and make the extra effort to work hard on presentations and papers.
His classes can definitely be dense, but the material is interesting. 1 group project, participation, 2 papers total, and he is a relatively tough grader. No textbook, but you need to purchase several smaller books, which are very inexpensive.
Lectures are dense and heavy, but with readings they synthesize clearly into interesting material. He does not want fluff in your writing, make sure you can be clear and to the point, take time to understand and interpret the views he presents. Values participation in class and will ask for self reflection, as noted below.
His lectures are dense and convoluted, so if you're a student who takes a lot of notes it will be hard to follow along in class. His lectures are not terribly interesting, and he lacks enthusiasm. He does not care about special circumstances (due to the coronavirus), and gave me a 0 on a paper with no option to try again. Would NOT take him again.
I took his human rights class and it was pretty easy. I rarely went to the lectures and did not do any of the readings and still got an A. He can sometimes be a hard grader but the class is pretty easy overall. As long as you do well on the essays, you will be fine. I got B's on two of the main assignments and still got an A. I would take him again
His lectures are dense and not very relevant to the papers assigned. His paper assignments are not specific and it was unclear what type of work he was looking for. He was apathetic to special circumstances and there was not a lot of room to improve. A lot of work and I did not learn anything at all
His material was very confusing and his lectures didnt have any theme or consistency. I just found it hard to follow along. He is a tough grader, and his papers are very hard to write. The prompts are as unclear as his lectures. Its not that hard to get a good grade, just some papers, but his class really just is not worth the time and energy
Boring, confusing and unclear. The class was fine, but he was not a good professor. Even if you read and pay attention everything makes no sense
He is not accommodating or flexible. His syllabus is not helpful and neither are the readings. The paper assignments are vague and it makes it hard to do well in the course. I'm not sure if I learned anything and he is just not helpful or pleasant.
Dense lectures with confusing material and trajectory, discussions are all over the place, heavy workload. His feedback is condescending and extremely unhelpful. He claims that most of our class doesn't understand his assignments but they are very vague and he doesn't give helpful criticism. Would not recommend taking his course.
Prof. Shepherd is easily one of the best professors Ive had thus far. I looked forward to his lectures every week, he is incredibly knowledgeable and well spoken. The course is challenging but most definitely worth it, it expanded my perspective on human rights and IA in general. Take this class if you can!
Throughout this whole semester there are only three assignments (two being papers and a group presentation). Your grade is mostly composed of your essay grades. The key to it though is actually doing the readings and understanding it. He will notice in your essays if you only go off of the lectures and will penalize you for it.
Easily one of the worst professors that I have had at GW. The course content is interesting, but his disorganization makes it incredibly difficult to participate in discussions. He is an incredibly hard grader despite the fact that his guidelines/instructions are incredibly unclear. Condescending and does not care about his students.
His class was basically him talking for 2.5 hours straight with little participation. He also refused to use lecture capture so if you missed class there was no way to watch it. He struggles with technology which is fine but he wouldn't work to accommodate students. No slides, just him talking about whatever he liked. Interesting class, not worth i
Knowledgable about topic, lacks respect for students (interrupts them constantly), hard to listen for 2.5 hours straight. ARBITRARY GRADING, very bad at technology, ended up being philosophy heavy. Avoid if possible, not worth your time.
Very long, negative lectures and very unclear grading criteria. I really recommend avoiding, I just did not learn much. He makes disrespectful comments about peoples names and backgrounds.
