very good teacher, clear with students
Good teacher, knows his subject, educates you about film
Mr Sheppard thanks for introducing me into liking Billy Wilder films. I love film and should have been a film major. Hey I liked the blond hair it was pretty cool! I hope one day you make a film. Don't be too hard on the students!
Knows his subject in and OUT, extremely organized and prepared. Makes his subjects interesting and tolerable. I didn't like the fact that he made this intro to cinema class tougher than it really had to be. Definitely not a bs class like some may think
His lectures and classes are very organized and he passes on valuable information. He's enthusiastic about the subject, which helps to make the lectures interesting. He challenges the students to work hard.
My favorite teacher at Palomar. He knows his stuff and has really good taste in film. Very enthusiastic and excitable about everything. The class work is very easy and he's got a great sense of humor. If only I were g4y...
I had 33 units of "A" (a 4.0) at Palomar College. I took this class for my GE Arts requirement. I got a "B" in his class. This is a really hard class. Don't take cinema with him unless you are serious about film.
He's a little intimidating, but nice. Excellent instructor. Doesn't require his students to participate, yet manages to inspire enthusiastic discussion. Fun class.
good movies. pay attention to lectures and pop quizes and you will do well. I think his class fallows the paradme. first 1/4 intro, middle is the body, and the last 1/4 wraps it up. This observation may only apply to the summer session.
Don't think you're just going to skate by in his classes. You won't. I recommend them highly; great movies, great discussion, awesome teacher. Robert Sheppard is the best professor ever.
interesting class, don't think you can just fly by.
wow! He is similar to Bill Murray in well, any Murray movie where he plays a cynical, witty, ****! Learn from the man, just don't say ignorant things, he doesn't take well to assine comments.
WTF This teacher knows nothing about film! *hints* U always read the book and learn nothing from him! When I asked him for help on my eassys he just stared at me blankly and gave me a long lecture that in the end said "o well" he doesnt help students and he just can't teach!
OMG. this teacher. hes wierd. DEFINITELY buy the book. and dont think cinema all you do is watch movies and BS ur way through...you actually have to pay attetion and dont be late...like...ever! hes not too helpful and hes kinda mean. but if hes in a good mood he can be kinda funny.
Extremely FAIR teacher, not hard, not easy, but by the book and right on point with his grading. If you're interested in the subject he is a great teacher to have. Most important turn in journals ON TIME, if you're one second late he WILL NOT except it, at all, no matter what.
well you gotta study the book and turn in journals on time. thats all
The best teacher in the Cinema program & one of the best at Palomar. You have to work hard (and NO late assignments) but you'll learn a lot & see great movies. He's got a good sense of humor & leads interesting class discussion. Very fair & helpful teacher.
Don't be late on journal days!A girl in my class walked in 30 seconds late and he would not take her journal.I'd also recommend at least Eng 100 before taking this class...he very literate and critical on jorunals. Don't make stupid comments are he'll make you look stupid. Good choice in films.

Excellant teacher, interesting and funny. Really respects your point of view on things even if they're contrary to his own. You can't just cruise through this class but it's not too hard either.

I thought he was a great teacher.. the tests were a little tough and you re3ally need to book to do well on them. He shows awesome films..makes a few witty comments :) All in all I thought he was somewhat tough but sooo worth it.
Sucks! Only checks his email Mon-Thurs. Very Very high maintnence and strick! Don't recommend
Will drop you if don't turn in the agreement on the 2nd day, no excuses, will not accept any late work( NOT EVEN A SECOND LATE), assignments are fairly easy.
DO NOT take! This teacher sucks! He show his students films that went no where Dude theres a reason these films didnt make it in theaters! Very Unhelpful His opinion u must follow of F for u!Bad teacher! Hates HollyWood How can u by a film teacher and hate hollywood U cant and hes not a film teacher
Great movie selection! Tests are hard unless you read the book. You have to do journals and he grades them pretty tough, but overall I loved the class.
I enjoyed his class. You have to work to get a good grade but it is worth it. His class is interesting, if you pay attention and study what he highlights you'll do well on the tests. I highly recommend his class to any student who wants an interesting class that will be a little challenging.

Not very helpful. He seeems passionate about cinema, but overall he is not clear among the students about materials.Gives outlines for each chapter to study for test, yet half of the materials to study is not related to what is on the test. Not a good ARTS requirement class to take.Dont take for easy A.
I did more writing in this class than in my Comp class. Bob seems to be a hardass, but if you do things his way, then you will get good grades.
A full semester devoted to Kubrick films, who could ask for anything more. Bob's film subject classes are set up the same way as his 100 class, a solid foundation in rhetorical composition will make the writing for his classes a piece of cake.
This class was surprising to me. It was a lot more intresting and a lot more difficult than I expected. The test are difficult because of the pin point questions he asks. You have to read the long chapters and be able to memorize many names, facts, time periods and locations. He is very exacting in grading the journals. Be prepared to work.
Talk about a waste of American tax dollars. The man does not teach you anything. He simply tells you to read the text book and after watching a film gives the contents to look over for the test.Half of the stuff on the test is not even parallel to the study material. If you want to learn something, take someone else.*coming form an A student.
This guy isnt the nicest of people. He knows hs stuff but he doesnt choose to help students very much. Everything is straight out of the book. Essays are grades pretty hard. I would suggest an alternative teacher.
I love this guy! He is funny, intelligent and he absolutely will open your eyes to films from all areas of the world and as old as 100 yrs ago. He absolutely makes it clear what you have to do to pass his class. There are never any questions about what he wants. One down fall... 5 classes with him and he cannot remember my name. You will learn alot
Mr. Sheppard is truly the walking and talking encyclopedia. he knows his stuff and is extremely hard. he is firm on deadlines and is approachable. I would reccomend him to anyone but be prepared to work hard and not slack off. he will work with you if you are disabled and will do everything he can to help you if you want to succeed.
I wanted to kill myself when I was in this class, but looking back, it really wasn't hard at all.Only study/read what he outlines in class for exams!A total Nazi when it came to deadlines & food in class, but I'm a rebel, so I snuck my gummy worms & M&Ms in anyway!Helpful Hint:empty snacks w/noisy packaging into a less noisy sammich baggy;)
Shows movies with disturbing scenes, giving the class the creeps. He insists it's ok because of the disclamer he makes class sign. or says "this is a piece of art". Too small of a person to admit when he is wrong or accept students with different opinions. will grade unfair if your opinion differs from his (his analysis is the only one that matters
This guy should be a comedian.... he is hillarious. I couldn't stop laughing at him the first day of class. He is a bit odd, but that's what makes him interesting. Some scenes in his movies are what some people might view as "disturbing," but not if you are an adult. I learned so much in his class. He is a strict grader and his test are pretty hard

My first impression was that this guy was anal retentive. Upon further inspection, it was confirmed. Deviating from his usual methods is not written in the stars. READ THE TEXT! I can't stress that enough. Even read the captions under the pics. Review the topics in the notes. All test q's are derived from TEXT. Not really a laid back guy.
Comes off as a major jerk the first few classes, is better afterwards. Suspend your personal prejudices and you will learn a LOT. This guy knows cinema. May show films with disturbing images, but they are always thought provoking. Text is a must read, tests weren't too difficult. Be clear in your essays.
A semester of Hitchcock films. was great. He's a huge fan of Hitchcock so don't mess with him on those movies. Grades fairly and tells you what he expects. Funny and knows his stuff. Just don't be late with an assignment.
Bob is one of my favorite proffesors of all time, he is smart, insightful, funny, and very stylish. He is also very strict, especially when it comes to deadlines and folders with three brads. He also has a low tolerance for morons, as do I, so if you are a

Amazing proffesor, with amazing style, and wit. If you are intelligent you will enjoy the class, if you are a slacker dumbass trying to take a cinema class cause you think it will be easy please stay away for everyone's sake.
Excellent viewing room.
I took this class 3 semesters in a row because it was that good. Not only did I get to discuss films in a broader sense than 'it was good', but I was introduced to movies I would've never hunted down on my own. It's usually a big class, so he might not know who everyone is, but if you participate in class, he'll learn your name quickly!

Very clear on what you need to get an "A." Don't be late to class because he will NOT let you turn in late assignments. Easy grader as long as you can prove what you mean.
It is not an easy A, but you learn quite alot about cinema. Be prepared to have a challange.
He's a great teacher and you will learn alot if you attend class. Just don't show up late during journal due dates unless you wanna fail the class! His test are easy as long as you read the book or listen in class...plus he gives you extra credit from lectures for the movies! He's pretty strict but an awesome teacher.

Cool teacher, weird movies. Show up to class often for a good grade. Tests are hard even with studying. Dont try to turn in homework late...
The class is pretty easy, watch a movie every week- three tests- and a few papers. He is pretty anal about turning stuff in on time and not making noise- but i dont really think its that much to ask. The tests are pretty easy if you study and read the book.
Allows students to be creative when writting about a film. Helps brainstorm ideas about movies prior to writting a paper. YOU BETTER BE EARLY!!!!! Never be late for his class. Turning in late paper are impossible, unless you have a doctor's note. He does make the class fun and helped me view movies in a whole new light.
This teacher is very condescending. Reading the book and attending class is a must. If you're thinking of taking this class just to watch/enjoy movies, don't!! The movies are pretty boring. On the plus side, the class is very structured. You know exactly what to expect, and what you have to do to earn an A.
this was the worst teacher i have ever had in my LIFE. he has no business being a professor he should be doing stand up at a comedy club for the def and the bilnd. i would never take his class again. even if you do all the work he can still give you a D because he doesnt"feel" your answers. RUN FOR THE HILLS.

This teacher is so awesome he really enjoys movies and his teachings show it you have to read the book and theres about 3 test and a total of 7 diffrent essays give or take hes super anal when it comes to cell phones noise food, drinks and attendance especially but its an easy class and hes very helpful make sure you put the proper cover page on tho
Know that he is very strict and he grades hard. He only gave out a couple A's in the class. I was extremely lucky to get a B. Everyone else got C's or failed the course. He tells you some things to look for on the tests but a lot of reading needs to be done. Glad I am out! I would suggest taking someone else. BTW, this is coming from a A student.
This guy is very arrogant and not very helpful at all. Not flexible. Don't take him!!
Excellent professor. He knows a LOT about movies. Smaller class (about 15 people) which makes it feel like an informal film seminar; I loved that! He obviously loves film and so did many of the students, so we had some good discussions. Shows good/significant movies. Respectful of students and clearly outlines expectations. Highly recommended.
He is a good teacher. He is very strict but it is understandable. You have to read the textbook or you will fail the class. You have to work in his class but if you love cinema it is not a chore. Those who say it is too much are those people who are looking for an easy A. Overall a very cool teacher.
Don't let him scare you at first. He really knows cinema and is very clear and humorous in his lectures. If you want a class just to kick back and watch movies in, this is not for you. Read the book, show up, and really pay close attention to films and class discussion. Be sure to have original thought and insight on papers and you will be fine.
The class is very well structured. He is pretty demanding with essays. Not very approachable or friendly, appears to be quite arrogant. Very knowledgeable about film. Test questions are straight out of the textbook; it requires you to read and remember a lot of detailed information. The class itself is usually very enjoyable.
Really good teacher who knows cinema. I have a new appreciation for the Western film after taking this class. You have to work for an A, but it's possible. Don't let him scare you--he's really helpful if you're confused, so just ask for help and you'll get it! Sensitive to students' needs (e.g. left copies of the book in the library so we didn't have to buy it). Participate, work hard, and you'll learn a lot.
Good teacher but VERY STRICT. He has you sign in and out of class and you must turn in your essay before class starts. He will not accept it as soon class starts. You have to read the textbook in order to get a good grade. He doesn't really go over the book in class because class consists of you watching a film. Read and attend class!
Sheppard was awesome. You HAVE to read the book obviously since the tests are not on the films. He is strict and very intimidating when you first meet him and he scares a lot of people off, but once actual class begins he is great and enjoys films and wants students to enjoy films. Read the book and always come to class and your good!
worth it for sure...he shows the most amazing movies.
He is pretty big on attendance and promptness, which kinda stressed me out because you had to be early in class otherwise he wouldn't accept your paper, even if you walked in 2 minutes late. However, the essays were pretty easy. He wants a lot of insight and if you're a cinephile, this class should be cake. Showed some interesting indie movies.
Great teacher. Very smart man, his lectures keep you interested. He IS big on attendance, and turning things in on time. I never approached him for help, but his Essay prompts and other instructions are pretty clear. You do have to do a lot of writing, and come up with your own ideas for best marks, so it is not an easy class. Highly recommended.
he is pretty tough at gradin journals, attendence is a must and showing up late hurts your grade. the movies you watch are enjoyabl, but after writiing so many journals, it is easy to get burnt out on the class
Sheppard is a great teacher. Tests are easy if you spend a couple hours studying, always has extra credit on the tests from his lecture, also easy. Movies are interesting. Just make sure you get the facts CORRECT on your journals. He is very picky about movie quotes, even if they are slightly off. Just remember to be DIRECT, and you'll ace it.
Prof. Sheppard spends the first 2-3 weeks weeding out those students who do not take the class seriously. When the films begin, he proves to be serious about his subject but with a great sense of humor. Do the work/ reading, regularly attend and the class is fairly easy. There is a lot of writing involved, but he helps each step of the way.
Sheppard is a hilarious professor who knows exactly what hes talking about. He is strict with rules but really encourages discussion and insight. Take this class if you want to learn about film.
Prof. Sheppard is the kind of teacher you want to have if you really want to learn. He is strict but his demands are not over the top. If you really want to learn, he is there to teach and to listen.
He is very strict. He gives no notes on the reading which is what the test consist of except for the 5 EC questions he gives. All he discusses is the movies w/ great passion. I am an A student and had to work very very hard to get a B. I was actually surprised that I got that. He DOESN'T teach this class like a 100 class more like a 400. RUN FAST!
Not a very easy class. A lot of work involved. Tests really aren't that bad because its a lot of True or false questions. The journals are a pain. He is a really strict grader and he pretty much demands perfection. Not a bad guy and I thought he was a pretty good theacher. You just need to give your best effort on the journals.
Harsh teacher. Essays are graded extremely hard for a cinema class. Tests are okay if you are dedicated to reading the book. No food and water in class, NO phones. And will check if you use outside sources for an essay (like a website with the plot) and fail you. Dry humor, not a bad guy, just brutal.
Really funny teacher with dry sense of humor. really well informed and knows his stuff. just dont cheat and do what he says and you'll do fine. and dont be intimidated by his first couple days, he's just trying to get rid of the people who dont take it seriously
If you are someone who is interested in watching movies and learning what it takes to make movies TAKE TAKE TAKE this class. Sheppard is very knowledgeable when it comes to studying film and teaching to others. The movies he shows can be wierd but it's a really cool experience. Plus his class is super easy.
Clear with what he wants, strict with (very reasonable) policies, and he shows great enthusiasm for what he does. Journals are easy - 250 word max, this is COLLEGE, this shouldn't be difficult - and the tests are mostly from the book. The one you buy, that is required. If you buy it, why not use it? Great professor, will probably take more classes.
He is THE BEST. He picks the best films, he is sarcastic, he gives good lectures etc. He is my favorite CINE teacher at Palomar, hands down.
he is the most scariest teacher i have ever had in my inter school year. he is organized and everything but he grad supper hard. he would never ever take a 1 minute late journal. don't even try to make up excuses cuz he will never take it unless u have proof from a doctor or a car accident or it's an automatic F-. he is not flexible AT ALL
Definitely a movie master not sure if this class is ever easy but it is not with him he is a pretty harsh grader.
very intimidating!! you must read entire text book to pass exams. essays are super easy but the exams are the most important. so if you dont like to read DO NOT take this class. also, i never felt comfortable asking him a question.
He's honestly a really great teacher who knows a lot about cinema. He's strict in that he doesnt allow for slackers or distractions but he's always nice and usually funny as well. The journals are not hard as long as you have an understanding of writing and are capable of thinking critically. 1 page, thoughtful answers is all he asks.
Very wierd movies. You cant drink water or eat in the class. I did everything and tried as hard as i could and barely passed with a C. And he is very unapproachable. Don't take his class. Period.
Took CINE 100, 102 and 103 from Prof. Sheppard in the late 80s and later in 2000. Inspired a deep interest in film that I still have today. His lectures are engaging & inspiring. Be prepared! It helps to familiarize yourself w/film basics & how to analyze film before the course starts. Be on time, don't miss class, turn in essays & you'll do well!
I really liked Professor Sheppard. He is clear and helpful (paying attention is key). If you think this is an easy A class, you are mistaken. I recommend taking if you have an interest in cinema and you like to write. If not, this is not the class for you. If you do your part, you will do well and you will definitely get something out of it.
