Robert is a really good guy who genuinely cares about his students. His course is very reading intensive, but he purposely picks articles he thinks read easily and arent too boring. Just keep up on the readings and participate in class and you'll do fine.
The class is a total breeze. The two papers, two exams, and attendance are most important. Lectures become a drag after a while but its tolerable. Four short quizzes are given on readings. Very simple. Gives you the exams beforehand. An easy A.
Relatively nice guy, though very opinionated and can be overly forceful with some of his ideas. A considerable amount of reading, most of which was not especially interesting.
Very open to opinion and conversation. If you are having difficulties just ask - willing to take the extra time to make sure you understand. Much appreciated.
What I did not like about Slammon's class is that he is a bit too nice to the students. He essentially dumbed down the material of the class to the point where he gave the exam questions in advance and allowed the use of cheat sheets. For an upper-level course, there was little challenge and no thought required. Disappointing.
Dr. Slammon is a fantastic teacher, and he really does care about his students. Vvery funny, enjoyable subject matter, and the papers let you reflect. Take him if you can, he'll change your way of thinking. Also, it's not a breeze, you DO have to work, but it's fun work. Don't skip classes or you'll miss important information.
Slammon is an awesome teacher! I learned so much from his class and I would definitely recommend taking him! It's not an easy A, but his lectures are very interesting and he engages the class in group discussions.
He is very nice. The lecture is interesting!!
Slammon was a really nice guy who is obviously very interested in both his subject matter and teaching it to students. There is a lot of required reading, but his tests are designed more around the lectures. His tests were very easy, and I feel like I learned many interesting things in his class. Highly recommended.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Willing to work with students, tests that were perfectly lined out to study for and he made what I thought would be incredibly boring pretty fascinating. Take 0003!
I took Dr.Slammon for medical sociology. It was a very interesting class and I learned a lot. Exams were straight from the textbook. There were two noncumulative exams and a term paper. Definitely recommend!
Professor slammon was a very easy professor who is very passionate about what he teaches. He gets a bit political at times so if you aren't super left wing be prepared to be a little offended at times. However his class was interesting and I did learn a lot. The studyguides for the tests were super helpful, if you look over them you will get an A.
Wonderful professor all around, very intriguing. Easy to listen to. Tough paper grader, though. Got A's on both exams but my paper dropped my grade to a C.
I took medical sociology. I thought he was a very nice guy, funny, engaging, but at times a little political. The grade was derived from 2 exams, a paper, and attendance. The tests were the absolute easiest I have had at Pitt. He pretty much gives you the answer in the wording, and all of the material is in the study guide. Reading unnecessary.
Best and easiest professor at Pitt. Literally never read the book and never paid attention in class, studied 2 days before the test, started writing the paper 2 weeks before deadline, and still got an A.
Amazing professor. Took medical sociology first semester of my freshman year and it was the best class i have taken thus far. his tests are so easy because he gives a study guide with everything that will be on the test. HIGHLY recommend.
More than halfway done with health and illness and it is probably the easiest class I have taken at Pitt. He gives you test questions ahead of time and allows you to write the full answer on a cheat sheet. Lectures are super boring but his voice is soothing. Really easy for an upper level course. He is very approachable and nice.
I absolutely loved Professor Slammon. I had him for sociology of marriage and we had to write a 10 page long paper but he allows you to really make the paper your own. He is a little monotoned, but has sarcastic and very funny comments from time to time.
Professor Slammon is a good lecturer. He ends up posting his lectures online, so it's more important to listen to what he has to say during class. The material is actually very interesting. The study guides he gives is super helpful for the midterm and the final. His tests are very fair.
The articles he assigned were fabulous, but his way of teaching them was completely boring. He is as uncontroversial and unprovocative as possible, despite the highly controversial nature of course material. Add this to stringent powerpoint usage and students are completely disenfranchised from thoughtful class discussion.
Slammon is a great professor. The lectures can get a little boring, but when he adds in his two cents, he can make it interesting. He really knows what he's talking about, and he's also a super easy grader. Two exams (written; aren't bad at all), and a 10 page paper (also really easy because he lets you write about whatever you want).
Slammon is a really nice guy, but gives such boring lectures. He makes you come to class even though it's not necessary at all. Write down in your essay prompts exactly what he had on his powerpoint slides and you will get an A. He even gives you a notecard to bring to the written exams.
I took Dr. Slammon for Health and Illness and it was a super easy class. Only a midterm, a final, and a term paper. The midterm and final were short essays given in advance and you could bring a small cheat sheet. The term paper was 8-10 pages and could be on any related topic from the class. Class attendance is mandatory but you get 3 free skips.
Terrible instructor. Most boring instructor Ive ever had. Acts like he cares about others opinions in class but if you disagree with something he thinks on the exam or papers he will knock off a ton of points. Also never responds to emails. Highly suggest not taking this Professor unless you feel like filing complaints at the end of the semester.
Easy A. Hes a cool professor. You just have to show up to class. Attendance is MANDATORY af. Gives a study guide out before the test with the exact test questions. Some easy essays throughout the semester that are graded on completion. I would recommend
Dr. Slammon's lectures can be a bit dry, but he also has a great sense of humor. There were only two written exams and a paper that we had all semester to write. He's an easy grader, and I learned a lot. I plan on taking another one of his classes next semester.
Slammon is a fun guy. I took this class for fun and did well, he has a dry sense of humor but if you take notes you'll do fine. There's 2 exams and a few easy writing assignments which you basically write in recitation. Not my favorite prof at Pitt, but definitely top 5.
He is very sweet and funny. Love the content, we always have really good discussions. He is great at explaining each concept and is very fair on his tests. Readings are a bit boring, but not necessary.
Dr. Slammon is an engaging teacher. He knows his lectures (which are powerpoint slides) can be a bit boring, so he does a great job to add in conversation that makes class more fun and makes the info stick. If you show up for class and recitation, complete the 3 easy writings, and pay attention in class, you are almost guaranteed an A!
Took this class to fulfill a requirement and was initially worried by the readings and lecture content but his exams are extremely easy and you are allowed to bring a notecard in with your answers prepared! Super easy grader, graded on a paper and two written midterm exams. Extremely easy and would recommend! Readings aren't necessary at all.
Dr. Slammon is very concise in his lectures and doesn't overwhelm you with information. The readings assigned are very interesting, and the three papers spread throughout the semester have topics picked by the student. Overall, I feel like this class really made me more aware of myself and others, and I'd recommend Dr. Slammon to anyone.
I love Dr. Slammon. He is 100% my favorite prof at Pitt so far. He is flexible, enthusiastic about what he teaches, and very knowledgeable. I loved Deviance and Social Control for a lower-level Soc elective. With Flex@Pitt his lectures were mostly asynchronous. Easy online exams on canvas. Take him for Soc classes if you can!
Definitely recommend! Asynchronous lectures - Engaging course material and exam questions reflect wording and real-world examples discussed in class, so definitely watch lectures! Skimming the textbook is more than enough. Class consists of: weekly recitation to discuss chapter, 3 writing assignments (4 pgs), midterm, final exam (non cumulative)
TAKE SLAMMON. He is a very genuine and caring teacher and wants you to do well and engage with the material. You don't have to do the readings to get an A. I didn't read a single word and did fine. But, add to discussion boards and class conversations and take notes on his lectures. The midterm and final are basically reiterations of the notes.
I LOVE THIS MAN. His deviance and social control class was so interesting and you can just tell how much this man loves what he does. Not a huge work load- put effort/show interest in the short essays and you will do well. He is so funny and relatable I promise you will enjoy lectures:)
I LOVE DR. SLAMMON! I had him for Sociology of Everyday Life (pre-Covid) and took Medical Sociology during Covid as an online class. Awesome dude, cares about the material so much and makes it so interesting!! Tests are straightforward if you do the readings and go to/watch the lecture. Super super super nice guy, one of the best at Pitt!
Recorded lectures but mandatory recitation. Lectures are short but he talks in circles so sometimes he talks around the point. Tests are very similar to his slides. A few papers to write throughout the term but he is a pretty easy grader. Highly recommend for a liberal arts/soc requirement.
Good class! really relevant and interesting topics. Tests were very easy and papers didn't take long at all, just write how you feel about the topic and make sure it sounds good. enjoyed his lectures!
I really like Dr. Slammon. His class does not require massive amounts of studying, and you learn a lot. The online course consisted of discussion board posts, midterm, final, and a paper. Most of the class includes listening to lecture and writing about your opinion. Take his class if you want a nice, stress-free semester.
This man has my heart. Even though the two exams were online because of covid and I probably wouldn't love this class as much if they were in-person he is still such great prof. TAKE DEVIANCE AND SOCIAL CONTROL, it is not only an easy gen ed but also interesting. 2 exams (midterm and final) and three writing assignments both worth 10 points...
Deviance was great with Dr. Slammon. He provides detailed lectures and is accessible outside of class. If you have any concerns he emails back quick, and his papers have many topic choices. Very respectful, and if you are passionate about social issues and theories I would strongly recommend Dr. Slammon.
Dr. Slammon was enthusiastic about this course and I was never bored during lectures. We had three papers to write and we were given many different topics to choose from for each one. He is a flexible grader and the exams are quite easy. There are definitely opportunities to get help from him if you need it as well. Great prof and fun class!
Love Dr Slammon! I had him for deviance and social control this semester, which I would definitely recommend taking as a social science gen ed. It's an easy A and Slammon's lectures are engaging. There were three four page papers and two online exams, none of which were too difficult. Don't forget that recitation attendance is required.
Dr. Slammon is a great man, he's super personable and interesting. Assignments were beyond easy. Everything in the tests were in the slideshows he lectures with, and the tests were open note. Lectures are mandatory, but they're not super boring. Definitely recommend taking any course with him!
really funny professor and has 3 papers to write all 4 pages and he doesn't even read them
Dr. Slammon is fantastic. His lectures are engaging, funny, and well-organized. He assigns interesting readings every week, but his lectures summarize them well. It's an intro course, but he will talk with students with respect. The three papers you write allow you to be creative and are mostly participation. Easy quizzes & gives study guide.
Easiest class ever - tests are based upon powerpoints given. Essays are free points. Show up to recitations for extra points iirc?
Dr. Slammon is a great professor. His lectures are engaging and covers so many topics. Had a textbook, but you can honestly just go off the slides. Easy essays and tests have study guides and are multiple choice. Overall, great and interesting class. Definitely would take another one of Dr. Slammon's classes.
Interesting topics, essays are easy and fun. His lectures can be boring but its an easy A. Exams are multiple choice and he gives a guide. Def recommend if you want an easy gened.
Incredibly wise man, delivers engaging lectures and has a humorous personality. Writing assignments are very laid-back and should not be a cause for stress. His exams are easy if you pay attention in lectures. They pretty much come right from the slides.
2 exams, 3 writing assignments, and attendance/participation make up your entire grade. Essays are graded by the TA not him. Lectures get pretty boring but very simple and easy to understand. Easy class just boring.
I had Dr. Slammon for Deviance and Social Control, and now Sociology of Everyday Life. He is extremely intelligent and quite witty and funny. His lectures are engaging and easy to understand with his use of slides. Exams and papers aren't difficult. Attendance for lectures/recitations is mandatory. Highly recommend!
Dr. Slammon was my favorite professor. He is super funny and made learning about deviance super easy. Recitation is required. Notes are on paper only during lectures. This class was very interesting not hard but you can't get away with not studying for the exams. He posted a study guide and made the content similar to the exam. 10/10 professor.
I highly recommend Professor Slammon! His lectures are engaging, easy to follow, and he always offers real-world examples to try and add some humor. He is very caring and understanding as long as you communicate with him. There was a midterm, a final, and 3 essays which were all very easy and manageable. Very fun class would definitely take again!
This class was amazing. Dr. Slammon is a very interesting lecturer and presents the information very clearly. There is a textbook for this course but my recitation professor sent me a PDF of it for free and you honestly don't have to do any of the reading. Just show up to lecture and you'll get an A. If you're looking for an easy gen ed take this.
Loved the material but almost fell asleep during lectures. Attendance mandatory for lecture/recitation but recitation was chill. There is a required textbook but you can get away without reading as long as you study for exams. There's 3 10-point papers, the midterm and the final. If you study (study guides) and do well on the exams you'll be good.
Dr. Slammon was just meh. I didn't love the class but didn't hate it. I was really excited to take this class because the topic interested me, but lectures were so boring - his voice is just monotone. There's a midterm, final, and 3 papers. If you have Stephanie Johnson as recitation leader she's a very fair grader.
the class is not difficult by any means, the three papers are very easy but the exams have a lot of lecture content. lectures are very boring and hard to follow because of that. he sounds very monotone and could easily put one to sleep. not bad but not good.
Dr. Slammon is the man. I've already taken 2 classes at Pitt with him and they were some of the most interesting classes I've taken and the easiest. He keeps it simple when it comes to papers and exams and keeps lectures interesting. He is very accessible outside of class and is a great professor to know. 100% recommend if you interested sociology
Best soc prof ever!! The writing assignments (3) were chill and fun to write. The exams (1 midterm and 1 final) were easy; he provides a study guide. There are weekly readings but his powerpoints sum up the main points. The course content was very interesting too.
Good option for a gen ed class. Only two exams and three essays. Essays are easy and exams are good as long as you prepare. Attendance is mandatory - lecture and recitation, but thats the only catch. Definitely not one of the most interesting classes, but Im glad I took it.
Professor Slammon was really good, he taught well and his lectures were never boring. The class had 2 exams(midterm & final) and three easy papers. He provided study guides for the exams which only covered exactly what you learn in class. Would 100% recommend him.
great option for a gen ed with a manageable workload. only 2 exams and 3 papers but the papers were easy to write as they were based off of your experience with the topics discussed in class. overall a decent class and he is a decent professor.
Really easy to follow--honestly don't really need the textbook if you attend the lectures (vis versa if you want to skip lectures... sort of. The textbook's a little heavier than necessary and you don't need to read the whole thing, the lectures are easier to understand). Good class, I really enjoyed the readings he gave us.
Very funny guy and lectures were engaging. Exams and papers were super easy too. Highly recommend him
He's a pretty chill professor. His slides had a lot of info that showed up again on the tests. I liked how he lectured and connected the topics we were learning with relevant events.
Dr. Slammon is a very funny and easy going guy. Medical Sociology itself is an interesting subject, and if you are going into the medical field, you should definitely take it. The class is three papers and a midterm and a final. You don't really need to use the textbook.
This class was an easy A. The material is fairly interesting but he is a boring lecturer in my opinion. I also feel like he didn't really know what he was talking about half the time. He spoke with no substance. The midterm material is common sense; the final was a little harder but if you study/memorize you'll be fine.
He only has two tests, counts attendance, and gives papers. If you go to lectures, take notes, and study for tests, you will do well. Literally complete the papers and you get 100%.
Very nice and funny during lectures, but monotone voice so it's hard to pay attention. 3 easy writing assignments, and a midterm and final. Easy gen-ed and interesting content.
Attendance is required for his lectures but they are honestly so entertaining. He was such an amazing lecturer and I really enjoyed taking the course. Very few assignments, only 3 papers with different prompts to pick and two exams on each half of the course. Textbook is required but I never touched it.
Dr Slammons lectures are very interesting and kept me engaged every class. He takes attendance using TopHat and recitations are also mandatory. He says textbook is necessary but you can still do good in the class if you don't have it/ read it.
Dr Slammon responds to emails really quickly. He is very understanding if you have any complications. He is very funny and tries to make lecture engaging. I personally had a hard time paying attention during lecture but that was not Dr Slammon's fault. He is a very interesting person to talk to.
Dr. Slammon was good, he did get a bit monotone and boring though. Exams were easy just study for them.
Dr. Slammon is pretty laid-back, but he requires attendance for lectures and recitations and uses TopHat to enforce it. The final grade was based on 3 writing assignments, which had many options for the prompts, and a midterm and final, which were multiple choice and easy if you put at least a couple of hours into studying. Funny guy, tells jokes.
Dr. Slammon is incredibly engaging and knowledgeable. The content of this class is SO interesting and I really, really encourage you to truly pay attention to the lectures just for your own learning and understanding of the concepts. I found both the midterm and final incredibly easy after making flash cards and reviewing them a few times.
interesting sense of humor and a good teacher. can easily pass the class just by going to lecture. 2 tests and three writing assignments make up your grade. very easy tests
Dr Slammon is amazing. He makes funny jokes in lecture to keep everyone engaged. In SOC 0471 there are three writing assignments which are super easy to get 100 if you just put in a little effort, the tests are super easy, basically just the study guide in test form. Take as many of his classes as you can!!!!
Professor Slammon is such an amazing and kind teacher. Class consisted of a midterm and final and three short writing assignments which are graded by the TAs (graded easily). The tests were easy as long as you looked over the slide shows and he gives out study guides. Attendance is mandatory (tophat) as well as for recitation. Fun class overall.
Great lectures, goes at a good pace since he wants you to handwrite notes. Funny and caring. Graded on multiple choice midterm + final + 3 papers. Posts slides and study guide before exam. Uses Tophat attendance. Very manageable class. Highly recommend taking him!
Slammon's lectures were engaging and covered interesting topics. He creates a fun class and is more than happy to discuss any questions. The class consisted of 3 papers, a midterm, and a final. Each paper gave many prompts to choose from. Recitations were also helpful in clarifying the material. Great class for an introduction to sociology.
Classical theory could be dry, but Dr. Slammon managed to keep his lectures engaging and simplify the content to make it understandable. Very funny guy who gives great constructive feedback on assignments. Grade was based on 3 short answer quizzes on lectures/readings and one long somewhat open-ended final essay.
He is well respected in the sociology department. There are only a few assignments and exams. Make sure you read the textbook and attend class.
very lecture heavy but he makes them fun. taking notes will be the best for this course even though he posts the slides after. there's a textbook but i never used it and still got a good grade. He is very understanding to your circumstances and accommodates all of his students when needed. one of my favorite professors to date.
Super easygoing and straightforward professor. There are 2 exams and 3 writing assignments and attendance is also part of your grade. It is easy to get 100% on the writing assignments and the exams are straightforward and fairly easy. He also makes content really enjoyable and wants you to understand and engage. Definitely would take another class.
Dr. Slammon is easygoing and cares about the material. Med soc is an interesting class, but I did find myself a bit bored during lectures at times. There are 3 simple writing assignments (3 pages minimum) and 2 exams (1 covering the first half and the final covering the second half). Good sense of humor and would recommend it for gen ed.
Great teacher. I got an A+ w/o the textbook, not necessary if you pay attention. There are three paper that are graded by TA(very difficult to not get an 100%). Two exam, on the second exam(final) there was 55/56 question but he graded it out of 50 questions so you could get extra credit. Only downside to some may be that attendance is mandatory.
He was funny and informative, class was easy, 3 papers (worth 10 points), and 2 tests (which are fine as long as you take notes). There is a textbook, but don't buy it. You are supposed to use it for weekly reading, but you will never need to do those readings if you take the notes in class.
Rob is a funny guy who care about his students. His class had 3 papers and 2 exams; both easy and manageable. He does lecture a lot, but lowkey if you yap with him, it more interesting and he will go off on a tangent. I had him for an 8am and he honestly made it very bearable.
This class is pretty lecture heavy but he posts his notes online and creates study guides for each exam. He is super funny which breaks up his pretty boring lectures. He often rambles and I have found myself more focused on counting the amount of times he says um or uh too often. 3 papers throughout the sem on whatever you want. I would take again
The BEST! The class is mostly lectures with one recitation each week. There are three essays, and they're basically graded on completion. There's one midterm and one final, and he gives clear study guides for both. I'd definitely recommend him if you want an easy, low stress gen ed.
i love this guy. lectures were enjoyable to attend even on days i wanted to not go to class. it is all very interesting stuff and he clearly knows a lot and likes to talk about it. my favorite part of the course was the broad possibilities for essay topics. each essay had 10 different prompts to choose from, and it made it so enjoyable to write.
Love this guy! Take his classes, especially deviance and social control.
Great and kind guy with dry humor. Lectures are boring but mandatory (3 absences allowed); don't take if it is an 8 AM. Don't need to do the outside readings; just study for the tests using the lecture slides. He has 3 writing assignments that are easy and doable, as well as 2 tests that are straightforward and come from the lecture slides.
Textbook not necessary, lectures can be boring but the tests are easy.
Graded on 3 writing assignments for the whole semester. Interesting lectures, pretty much exactly based on the assigned textbook readings (so kind of unnecessary to read). Required attendance through tophat
