snore! but new at teaching..maybe there's hope yet
It's everything you need to know about writing for the mass media. I had a good time doing the work in the course, and I recommend this instructor if you want to know about technical writing, or take a technical writing course.
awesome teacher! really helps you understand what youre doing. I reccomend this teacher if you want to do a lot of writing. Good way of teaching journalism since he was a journalist.
He was kind of strict as far as his assignments go, but if you asked for me help he would go out of his way to help you out. I would take him again. Very smart guy it seemed.

I think he is a great instructor. He seems to know what life is really about, and it is people like him that will make one's collegiate experience more smooth-sailing. I recommend him.
Bob is the man. I hate writing and jounalism does not interest me at all but I had to take the class. Bob did a good job making the class interesting, even fun sometimes. Not quite what I expected.
Bob is a corporate tool.... Just kidding. Bob is a great teacher. I actually don't enjoy studying English, and when I knew I had to take this class I wasn't real happy. However, Bob is very engaging and quite comical. He made this class alot of fun. I would recommend that everyone take this class.
He is very good, kind, and understanding.
Gee Dr. Bob, someone thinks you're hot???? Anyway, Bob is a great teacher, makes a BORING class really interesting. I know that I will remember to make all my letters close with a "positive and forward looking statement." If you have to take an English class, look for Bob.....
Very particular and intense over correctness. No slacking here. If you want a good grammar challenge take Bob's class. He is very funny and will make you laugh, while telling you that your comma is in the wrong place. I learned a lot from Bob. He is like a nerdy tastie yum yum to look at too.
Journalism class. Another distinct challenge from Bob Stein. Professional in every way, he will make you produce perfection. If you are lucky enough to get an A, you can be proud to know that you really deserved it. He is a fabulous and comical teacher and the lectures fly by. I highly reccomend him if you are serious about learning. He is really a cutie too.
Even though I had this class at 8 in the morning, Bob made it worth going to. He made you laugh and was very helpful. I highly recommend him as an english teacher!
This instructor takes news seriously folks! I learned an incredible amount.
He has no compassion for anyone but, himself. One of the most selfish individuals I have ever met at this school.
His lectures flew by & he is quite comical, but he takes way too long to grade/return the assignments. I made the same mistake twice b/c I didn't receive the first incorrect assignment back in a timely manner. If you ask the status of your grade, he says to check blackboard, but the grades are never current. He seems to know his stuff though
He is an odd teacher; he has a bad habit of saying "See what I saying". He isn't very good at getting things back to you quickly but will move paper due dates until he gets them back to you. He is a rambler he will use all of the class time to talk about nothing.
Can be entertaining but doesn't have much to say after the first 2 weeks of class - all group work after that. If you have a good group this can be an easy grade but I didn't feel that I learned much.
If you are taking a communications class, take his 110 it is great. He makes sure that there are ways to help if your group sucks, and he will provide insight towards making you project as good as possible.
great teacher. Funny guy. Recommend him all the way!
Does post grades to Blackboard, but it may take 2-3 weeks and sometimes longer. But he does not video tape and critique your speechs in/to the class. Other teachers do. He makes speach giving low stress.
Looks like Peter Krause from Six Feet Under. Just don't tell him that, because he will look at you oddly! Very laid-back and articulate, very much at odds with the stereotypical view of professors as anti-social and boring. The only complaint I could give is that he is a little late on grading papers, which you can see from other posters. Great pro
I really liked his classes (I took both his speech class and his media class in the same quarter, I suggest it). He makes things low stress, is very lenient, just do your work so he won't get in trouble. His classes don't feel like work, you just learn. I highly suggest him.
Good teacher! Fun, relaxed, easy, laidback. 1 letter grade off for each spelling mistake in group projects but still good. Doesn't show favoritism.
This teacher is an idiot! He missed 4 classes out of our 12 we had for the quarter. He never gave back papers on time and would never tell us our grade because he would always forget it in his car. He never taught, he just sat there. Group work is mandatory and if you have a stupid group then you are screwed, no matter how well you do on your own.
LOOOVEEE HIM!
great teacher. very interesting and it wasn't murder for for a speech class. He made it fun which who knew speech class could be fun or interesting???
If you get stuck with a group of bad students, kiss your grade good bye. This guy rates on typos. We left the 'k" from someone's last name and he dropped us an entire letter grade. Not a fun class. Prides himself on being a great, easy teacher but these are both wrong statements. This guy is very cocky and stubborn.
I loved his class. I could understand not liking it if you are stuck in a bad group; however, the whole point of the class is learning how to deal with that, thus the title, "Group Communication." He is laid back and makes all of his assignments very clear. Easy to approach too :).
He is very clear on the expectations of the class and how to get an A. He is however vary particular on time limits for your speeches - don't go over the time limit. The current edition of the textbook is not needed - go buy an old edition for a much cheaper price.
It seems students that have him for speech like him. But he is slow to post grades, dosent return e-mails, or phone calls. In his group communication classes he will not help when you encounter a problem. Is tardy for every class by almost 15 mins, is curt and rude when approached to help a student.
The guys a joke, you teach yourself, test yourself, he won't lecture on material, dosen't post anything he tells you he'll post-even grads are delayed on posting. He even got the final exam dats screwed up. Like I said - a joke.
He is a very nice and personable guy. He tells you exactly what you need to do to get an A in his class. It was a very low stress class. He didn't return outlines on time, but he did go easy on grading them because of that. And yes he was late sometimes. But who cares. Most of the students were late everyday anyways.
This class started out fun and interesting. He's a really funny guy. After 2 weeks, you break into groups and he never really talks again. Comes in late and you are pretty much on your own. Grading is ridiculously SLOW. However, assignments are easy (if you have a good group). I got an A, no problem.
You all are salty. This class was fun!
Bob Stein is a great teacher. Made speech writing and presenting a breeze. For a speech class it was very low stress. He was clear and concise and went out of his way to help if needed. Yes he was late sometimes but made up for it in his lecture. Very funny guy and knows what he is talking about. Great professor hands down!!!
He is very unclear about what he wants..u teach yourself and just pray u understand it and doing it right. Your group decides your fate for this class.
He makes the class fun..He understands that you don't really want to take a speech class. He does suffer from a bit of ADD and can get off the the subject at times, however its funny and he will get to a point.
He's really knowledgeable and interesting. He gets off topic easily, but it's usually somewhat relevant. He doesn't follow a syllabus at all and you have to attend in order to get assignments because he doesn't post anything on Blackboard. He randomy assigns things as he goes, so if you need to plan ahead and know when things are due - maybe avoid.
Bob is one cool dude. He makes the class fun and is good for a laugh or two. The group projects are interesting, but be prepared to work your butt off if you draw less than stellar group members. Tests aren't difficult, per se, but a little awkward. Bob is easy going and has lots of great stories to tell. Would recommend to any one!
Didn't return things in a timely manner. Slow to return emails which is completely unacceptable considering I took this as a hybrid course. Get ready to teach yourself if you take it hybrid because there are no online lectures nor lectures before your first speech.
Bob was great. This class was conference group and discussion, for all the people that did not want to take speech. He made the class more fun. The class is not difficult, but you will work...especially if you are in a bad group.
Prof. Stein is a nice guy. Harsh on grammar and spelling mistakes. Slow to grade papers and hardly lectured the material. His focus for COMM-1110 is the group projects. You'll learn the material on your own. Nothing was overly difficult. He sits there and does who knows what but was responsive with any questions or explanations anyone had.
He was very hard to get ahold of through email, which is the main way when taking online. He was late several times when posting our assignments on blackboard. At the last week of the semester we do not have grades for our four outlines due at the same time as each speech. He went out of town for a week and did not inform us.
Basically I agree with everyone else. Robert is not overly easy or hard, but you must complete the assignments in a timely manner. He's got a very positive outlook and is willing to work with classmates; however, I suggest being strict with group members as they pretty much determine your grade unfortunately. I would recommend him none the less!
Horrible class- professor was impossible to get in contact with via email and the class was taken online. Professor had you post the recorded speeches to YouTube and his responses were not particularly helpful. Not the worst class I've taken but I will make all efforts to avoid this professor in the future.
He's big on participation. Towards the end of the class you will have to grade your group members that he puts you in to show how well they have done throughout the semester. The beginning of the class doesn't matter until you get your in groups, that's when all the work really starts. Just make sure you have good group members who want a good grade
Professor Stein did a great job teaching. His lectures were entertaining while still being informational and he was very helpful. He was easy to get in touch with and answered all questionsemails in a timely manner. I genuinely enjoyed taking his class and would take another.
All we had to do was four speeches to pass the semester. 1st speech was 5mins, 2nd was 6mins, 3rd was 7mins, and the 4th was 5mins. Super easy and hes really helpful. I only went to class once a week because of such light course work. We never used or referenced the book either.
Do not take his course online. The problem here is that you need group involvement to complete the speeches but don't expect other students to be involved so groups are tough unless you have family or friends to watch. There is no online discussions on chapters or speeches, no feedback on anything, and no help to be found. Bad situation all around.
Avoid online class. Take on campus only if you want a good grade and to learn anything.
Don't get me wrong, this class isn't a walk in the park. Robert isn't going to babysit you through the course. He'll post the syllabus at the beginning of the semester and you're expected to follow everything through yourself. You give 4 speeches the entire semester. Practice these speeches, don't read off your note cards, and you'll be successful.
This was the easiest class I've taken, but he does make you work for your grade. Follow his instructions to the letter and you will get an A. You don't need current book, because speech is speech, no new developments,so an older version is dirt cheap and can be useful. Attendance is not mandatory but you miss helpful tips from him if you skip class
Really engaging - cares about the subject matter & really knows how to prepare students for public speaking. Tough but fair. Excellent instructor. Also funny & hot.
Four speeches and that is basically it. He tells you exactly what he is looking for in the speeches, so getting an A is not that hard. The tough part of the class is really just overcoming the natural anxiety of public speaking and making sure the outlines are written correctly. His lectures are very interesting and his grading is fair.
Took online class-forgot to grade ALL of my speeches so I emailed him and he said I never turned them in. Responded with screen shots of the emails I sent containing my video links and my outlines. Didn't respond for about two weeks, and still he only graded one of my speeches. Gives very limited time to do last 2 speeches. DO NOT RECOMMEND
Bob was a great professor. He was hilarious and class was so much fun that I didn't want to miss it. Not to mention, he was pretty good looking. Always dressed very nicely. Just make sure that you make your speeches long enough or it will take a big hit on your grade.
This professor had to be the best professor I have ever had, he was funny, made the work easy to understand, he made you feel comfortable when giving your speech to the class, and he was really cool, if I could I would definitely take his class all over again!
The class is easy because his requirements are clear. Great guy, great professor, I actually got a lot out of his class.
I would not recommend taking this course online. The first few weeks went great then no one heard from him for about a month and a half. Finally, the last two weeks of classes he posts two really hard assignments. I was irritated, especially after completing all of my other classes early.
This is my favorite professor of all time. I have not heard good things about his online class but I loved the face-to-face class. He is hilarious, I love his lectures, and the atmosphere of his class is amazing. Attendance is not necessary but you will not want to miss class.
As long are you show up to some classes and actually prepare for speeches, you will do just fine. I actually learned a lot when in class about public speaking in general. He tries to scare you the first day of class but it isn't bad at all. Easy A
I took this class online and it was beyond frustrating. You have to record yourself giving the speech to an audience of 5 people or you lost points. It was SO hard to find 5 people to participate. Mr. Stein was also very frustrating. He was very unorganized and did not grade speeches on time (for feedback) for you to give your next speech. Avoid!
I think he is a great teacher but not such a great person. The lectures primarily consist of him talking about himself and are very boring and don't relate to much of what you're doing. I loved the fact that all you have to do is 4 speeches, no homework, tests or a final, but that can come back to hurt if you dont do particularly well w/ speeches
This class is an easy A, but I would not recommend this professor. His requirements for speeches are rather unclear; I frequently emailed him with questions. He also takes a while to respond to emails, and takes forever to put grades in.
This class was definitely something you had to work on outside of school, practicing your speeches or what not... but I learned a lot and it made me more confident in speaking. Bob was a great professor but he does grade hard.
Very intelligent guy, and pretty funny too, but he can come off condescending at times. If you're shy, or not used to speaking in front of groups, do NOT take professor Stein. If you're a comm major who needs to develop this skill, or a good speaker looking for a challenge, professor Stein would be a great choice.
Bob announced we would have 6 speeches over the course of the semester. Do not take this class if you already have a busy schedule due to the work it requires outside of class. Not only this but he claims that he will up the speeches to 8 next semester. Also, his criteria is quite unclear and jumbled. Okay job, Bob.
Stein can be a great teacher if you are on his good side. Show up to class and make sure you write your speeches and practice! I had to write 6 speeches which may seem time consuming but really is not. Fun class and great short lectures.
The only grades that were used were 2 tests, 4 outlines, 4 speeches and 2 grades for going to the Communication center. The tests were easy to do only if you read the book. My biggest problem with him was his grading and lack of responses to emails. He would put in your last speech grade after the next one was due so you did not know what to fix.
Professor Stein brought me out of my shell, and helped me to become immensely more skilled at public speaking, something that I had previously dreaded. He grades based on the individual and their growth over the semester as opposed to an "objectively" good speech, which I think is very considerate and fair. He gives honest and constructive feedback
No. That is all i have to say. He waits last minute to grade which gives you zero time to improve your next speech causing lots of anxiety. He is a very hard grader for no dang on reason. Comm review will tell you your speech is perfect and then he will disagree and give you a bad grade. If i wasnt on fafsa i would drop out in a heartbeat.
Very tough grader communication center will help you and it still wont be good enough for him, Does not grade speeches in a timely manner. Won't respond to a email with anything helpful. I will never take a class with him, and if I were you I wouldn't. He doesn't help you improve your speech at all, he just picks apart your writing.
I am an honors student and I failed the class! If you email, sit and wait a week, turn in assignment a day late (even if you have a valid excuse)and you'll get an F for the hours of hard work. This class is destined to make you fail with this professor. If you want to fail the class take it with him. Read awful reviews they are 100% accurate.
Robert Stein is super friendly, helpful, and goes into great depth when helping a student. He does an amazing job as a teacher and I enjoyed his class! He also used an online textbook instead of us buying one which was great
He was incredible to have in class but he admitted himself that his online version of the class is much harder. If you have to take this class for credits, take it in person. Make sure you take good notes during his lecture. Lecture seems conversational, but it's full of exactly what he is looking for in your speech so don't miss it or skip notes.
He is so PICKY with the speeches and outlines I copied the EXACT format he wanted for a speech outline and he gave me a F and he only graded HALF of the textbook homeworks only thing that saved my grade was doing good on the exams he's MEAN
The test questions you get for 1 point of credit are a joke! I have no problem speaking publicly, however he was a horrible professor! Extremely liberal... pick your speeches accordingly! If he doesn't like/favor or side with your topic you will get a bad grade! Essentially he killed my gpa just off being biased.
I went into this class knowing nothing about public speaking.I really didn't learn that much coming out of it honestly. I took this class online, which was really hard to do. The only instruction given the whole entire semester was his example outline and the 2 required tutor sessions. He does a bad job of teaching and explaining so it wasdifficult
The topic was very hard for me because I was new at at. However the feedback was helpful and I learned new things. I would have appreciated some more help but the example outline helped me.
The topic was very challenging for me because I was new at at. The feedback was helpful and I learned new things. I would have appreciated some more help but the example outline helped me.
the previous review was an online class btw. That played a big part in the difficulty. However it was fine.
Worst experience with this online course. He writes insulting novels when grading, expecting your work to be perfect each time as if this class was your profession. I did not learn anything, just glad I squeezed by refraining from emailing him or the school and telling them how I felt. Takes super long to grade anything. AVOID THIS MAN
His guidelines were SO specific, like your speeches HAD to be exactly x number of minutes, if you were over/under the time by even 15 seconds, he would take off points. He wouldn't provide feedback for a while so it was hard to improve on his feedback. I went to the COMM Lab for help and the prof there was confused by his guidelines as well.
Pros: responded to emails promptly, homework assignment were easy points, instant-access textbook. Cons: graded speeches after the next one was due(made improving hard), vague grading guidelines, condescending grade feedback, speeches/outlines submitted by email & cloud drives so took forever, lost points for being over or under time by seconds.
Dr. Stein truly does care and support the students he serves. He is understanding and very flexible when given proper notice. 10/10
Overall was one of the worst professors I've ever had. Took WEEKS to grade things, used AI responses for everything, answered emails with zero helpful information, and was extremely picky about EVERYTHING. The Comm Assignments were extremely confusing to follow but when I did them he gave me zero credit even after I sent proof that I did them.
Dr. Stein is not a professor I'd want anything to do with again. Very unresponsive to grading until the last minute. Claims he's here to do anything you need but I should not have to remind the professor to grade things like topics and outlines the day before they are due. Clearly did not pay much mind to this online course. Irritating.
