He's sometimes hard to take in, but he has great ideas (just needs a little work on the explanation). Lots of visual, audio aids. Eccentric subject matter at times, but pay attention every now and then and you might learn something.

He never actually has a point, just all these theoretical ideas that he does a horrible job of explaining. If you are a humanities brained person you might like him but I don't reccomend him for the non-humanities person. If you need concrete ideas, he's not your guy. THough watching him get angry at people who aren't paying attention is a plus.

He's a nice guy. Pretty opinionated. Class is pretty unstructured, mostly just talking about his experiences in San Fran. It's really interesting. Just have to do 2 walking tours of the city for your grade, no tests. Pretty easy. He takes attendance everyday so be sure to show up, otherwise your grade will go down a lot.

Worst class/professor ever. I hate this class. I'd rather give blood than attend this class. I don't even know what we're studying, he just plops his opinions in your lap and expects you to write papers about it. He is not helpful at all. He is elitist, condenscending, and he interrupts a lot. I hate him.

Dr. Thomas is a pretty cool and chill professor but the class is boring! The grade is only 2 essays, which grades easily. This professor was such a lame and complete waste of time. We didn't learn anything we couldn't otherwise learn by simply being aware of what goes on in the world. Prof Thomas is a really cool guy and he knows the material better than anyone else in his field (he'll make sure to tell you that too). His lectures are fine as the class participates, the films he shows are amazing, and the articles he assigns are dense but very interesting. Three easy papers but go to class he'll tell you exactly what he wants!!

Dr. Thomas is an amazing teacher. I took Thought & Image with him for my seg. 3 requirement & ended up loving the class. The material covered is interesting, thought provoking, & at times, can be challenging. If you're a student who appreciates literature/films, this course is an in depth analysis of numerous topics pertaining to each. ps READ

Class studied various works of pop art, films, and video games. Readings each night from various texts. There are two five-page analysis papers that are worth a majority of your grade and a short in-class final. Professor had a laid-back class style. Work load was manageable, interesting lectures and choice of works to study. Enjoyed the class!

Professor Thomas is very knowledgeable and will tell you exactly what you need to learn from these unique films. He will meet you outside of class. Grade based on two essays and short test. You will learn things you didn't know and will see and appreciate films you've never heard of. Wish I could take more from Prof Thomas.

great class to learn about techniques used in classic films, and quality film selection. my only qualm is with his willingness to engage students outside of the classroom. kind of intimidating at times due to a seemingly incessant need to project his voice. with the papers, just listen to him during lectures, and you should be fine.

I took this class over the summer of 2018, so the class was very very compact. Be prepared to do a lot of reading each week and taking notes along with watching hour long videos each week. Two essays, one for the midterm and one for the final. Turn in your notes, post on forum, and do the essays and you'll be fine. Essays are a bit hard though.

I took History of SF and it was not bad at all. The readings were pretty long but interesting. We had two-three papers to write and had to turn in film notes. I enjoyed this class and it was pretty easy overall. Just be sure to understand the readings and follow the directions of the paper. Everything is structured simple and straight forward.

Class was asynchronous. Week's materials were opened every Monday and students were assigned a discussion that had to be two paragraphs. Did not have to reply to people unless you wished to. Every so week, students were assigned to write notes of weekly films but were able to write the notes as wanted.

I took the 5 week summer class. The course seems well-crafted to have you explore San Francisco, especially in the 1800s. Not really a traditional history class, as in you loosely follow a timeline. Expect multiple long documentaries and readings each week, discussions each week, and 2 papers over the semester.
