TINK!! This guy is hilarious! And a good teacher. Class is fairly easy.
Great teacher. Does everything he can to try to make history interesting. Class isn't very hard. Tests are generally easy if you've payed attention. Very nice and sincere. Just an all-around good guy.
He was great. Take the Tink-Man!

EXTREMELY HARD. Difficult workload to manage with full schedual. Good teahcer, but lectures can be boring. Easy to work with.
Great teacher, encourages questions, making sure individuals grasp concepts without confusion. Concise, yet thorough lectures. I also found him quite amusing. Studying for quizzes and exams is essential. Choose TINKLER!!
You will never find a more interesting History professor. The historical figure impressions were quite entertaining. Maintains your attention level. I loved the class!
STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!! Grade based on occasional quizes and test. Very interesting and humurous guy.
One of the best professors I have had. Does some really great impressions! Pay attention...test and quizes are challenging. There is a lot of reading, he has picked some really GOOD books though!
A very good example of an exellent honors professor. Very clear in his lectures(and you sometimes get a free show/candy). Exams are challenging. Grades hard on papers. Good professor to have.
Best History professor I have ever had. He is a great guy to talk to and enjoys talking about history with you indivudaully. His impressions were awesome, but I got bored of his Star Trek refrences.
Tinkler is a wonderful teacher and a wonderful person as well. He will do anything to help you pass the class. He truly wants you to learn. He loves his job and makes class enjoyable. He's just a pleasant person. All around nice guy and great teacher
He loves his job. He is so funny and he even sings in class!
Tinkler is a great teacher. He does speaches and acts out the person he's doing it on. The work load is fairly easy. He gives you study guides for the tests and there's usually extra credit on the quizes. I would suggest him for Hist 50.
Never had him for a teacher but what a great presence in the History department. CSUC is lucky to have him.
He's such an awesome teacher! You can tell he enjoys what he does. We watched Star Trek the first day, it was awesome. He also plays and sings songs that go along with the course material. I highly recommend him.
hard tests, but anyone can tell that he loves his job, and is so passionate about history
If Greg Brady from the Brady Bunch was smart, helpful and a great teacher, this is what his class would be like. Tinkler rocks!
Robert is a wonderful teacher & he "performs" during class using voices of presidents and other historians, making the class exciting. His tests are extremely hard, yet he gives a detailed study guide. Overall, a great teacher & I would recommend taking his class because you will learn something!!
Good teacher. Knows his subject, grades fairly, helpful, good lecturer, and well-organized. I reccommend him.
Excellent teacher, fun and keeps you interested.
Best teacher I've had here at Chico State
Best teacher on Campus. Interesting, helpful and damit if you don't learn some really interesting stuff beyond what the books say. Have you heard him do his voices??
This was a really fun class was far as history goes. I would suggest attending lecture and taking very good notes because you can pass the quizes and tests with a decent grade off of the lecture notes if you write down more than the outline.

This guys is pretty awesome, this is the first time i've taken a history class and actually learned something. He makes it exciting with his crazy voices and the quizzes aren't too bad, just look over your notes and sometimes the stuff in the margins of your text book, the test can be hard, but if you study it all comes pretty easy. HE'S GREAT!!!!!
This class inspired me to change my major to History. He is clear as day when it comes to quizzes and test, so they are no problem to sore an easy B, A if you work for it. He also provides interesting reading material out side of the text book. It also doesn't hurt that he’s lovely to look at! Take this class!
Loved the class and the professor.
i LOVE this guy. i hated history and i stayed interested in class. Hes a cheese ball at times but a great teacher. Very helpful and easy to talk to. lecture is important but i personally didn't do any reading and i did great in class.
Mr. Tinkler is an awesome professor. He is not only knowledgeable on the subject of history, but he's helpful, funny, open to new ideas, and pretty damn cute.
you can tell he loves history and is very good at lecturing in ways easy to understand, but if you're taking the class for an "easy A", i would recommend someone else. his tests are difficult. the weekly quizes will save your grade, just read the text, it will help...a lot!
very good teacher. always available to help out and very knowledgeable.
I had such a crush on prof Tinkler, but if you fail to see what a hunk of a man he really is - I still believe you'll enjoy his class anyway. Enthusiastic and passionate about what he teaches, his classes are laid out and easy to understand. Actually study your notes and the study guide for quizzes/tests and you'll do excellently!
Dr. Tinkler is awsome. I hate history and have always tested poorly in it ( like 10th percentile in STAR testing when the 90th percentile was good), but I loved this class. He keeps your interest and it's easy to follow. He's also way cute in that nerdy way.
Tinkler is an excellent professor. I knew little next to nothing about the Civil War until I went to his class. Hes very clear on the lectures and very fair as well as a great source of knowledge. I highly reccomend him and woudl gladly refer him to any History Major.
He's an awsome teacher. His test are hard because you have to write an essay and answer multiple choice questions in 50 mins. but he give yous three possible essay questions that might be on the test. Tow of those will be on the test. Covers a lot of info. Defenitly go to his opffice hours becuase he is really helpful!!
Hes an awesome professor, really pasionate about history and he makes it interesting. Definately hot in a cute professor-like way. Hes an awesome guy and he funny, so class is never boring! As long as you study the notes you'll be fine.
You learn alot. Its a great class tho. He has 10 quizes over the term which pretty much make up your grade, so dont take them lightly. its all in your notes tho so pay attention and you'll get a good grade. He is a great, understanding teacher tho. Get Him!
Class was kind of fun. I don't think I personally got a good grade cause I didn't study very hard before the quizes and that's kind of important. So yeah, take this class, but don't make the same mistake I did, study for the quizes and you'll do fine.
i don't really care for american history at all, but he was at least nice about it. he tried very hard to keep my interest and was overall a very nice lecturer. he is however a bit of a push over. just make sure you study for the quizes. he gave us papers for our final- not very hard if you'd done the reading.
Best teacher I have ever had, hands down. He makes history really fun! The quizzes are based upon notes he puts on the projector in class, and on reading from the textbook, so pay attention and you'll do great. Take advantage of his office hours too, he is fun to talk with! If you have the opportunity to take this class, do it, you won't regret it.
Awesome teacher, I loved the class.
Great professor! And cute!
A great professor! One of the best on the campus! The class is so great! Its like going and listening to a great story every day of class! All of his class are amazing! I have also takin his History 130 and that was great as well!
I have always hated history, until I took Professor Tinkler. He makes history extremely easy to learn and his lectures aren't boring at all. Quizzes are on Fridays and there are six of them a semester. Exams aren't too bad; he gives a study guide for each one. Best history teacher - take him!!
Great teacher who teaches with power point so it's easy to follow and take notes. He's pretty funny in a nerdy kind of way. He's very easy to talk to outside of class and is willing to work with you if you need help. There are quizzes almost every Friday but they are easy 10 question quizzes based on the textbook reading. Study for his exams
AMAZING CLASS!!! GREAT PROFESSOR!! TINKLER IS ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS IN THE SCHOOL! HE HAS A TRUE LOVE FOR THE SUBJECT AND IT COMES OUT IN HIS LECTURES! IF YOU CAN TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM I WOUDL HIGHLY SUGGESTS IT
AMAZING TEACHER. Hes has seriously change my like when it come to actually enjoying history. go too class, take good notes, review your notes a few times and your clear. he even caught me cheating on a huge assignment, and gave me another chance. truly amazing person and teacher.TAKE HIS CLASS, i am so thankful i did.
Great Teacher...Won CSUC Teacher of the year last semester. Very interesting lectures, never really boring. If you need 130, take Tinkler's class
I took his civil war class. He is a great professor and a South Carolina boy. He knew the answers to even the most obscure questions. The best teacher at Chico State, hands down. I definitely recommend this guy. Work load was fair. Quite a bit of reading though. Brings cookies and other food to class for students. He's a good guy.
Just awesome.
Great professor. i looked forward to going to class with him. He always mixes up lectures with jokes or movies. He encourages you to come to his office. Great Teacher!
If you previously hated History because of all the dames and dates, this class will cure your aversion. Tinkler presents every lecture in an interesting, easily comprehensible fashion every day. He is open to questions and will get back to you if he doesn't know the answer. He also has lots of funny voices which bring the material to life!
I took his HIST130 class last year and it absolutely blew me away. He is always willing to help out his students and give them the benefit of the doubt. His examples are always quirky and easy to connect with. His knowledge of the material is constantly evident. His love for the subject really gets his students to love it as well.
I thought that I was going to hate this class because it was required, and I'm not a fan of history. But, prof. kept class interesting with song, videos, etc. The material was clearly presented, and office hours are easy to make. There is a lot of reading, if you keep up with it you will be fine. Great class! Best for the subject!
Dispite what other people have said i completely disliked this guy! he was drug on and boring. gave weekly quizzes on fridays. He was not one of my favorites at all. Take the class for yourself, but i found him useless and boring.. snoozeeeeee fest!! :X
In order to do well for Tinkler's class do the following:1. Read essay exam questions (We had 2 essay exams this sem) and prepare ahead of time. 2. Read the chapters assigned for each of ONLY 6 quizzes per semester (attend lecture most of the time). 3.Define the key terms he assigns and study a little. This is enough for an A. He's a fine professor
Tinkler is the best history teacher I have taken! He is very helpful if u need help. He is a funny person by doing voices of past people like jfk, Johnson, etc! He sings to u in class which is funny! He knows how to teach history to make u interested! He even helps people with disabilities like me to make the subject easier less complacated. His office hours are good. If u need an easy teacher for history; which is hard, and history is very hard, I would defintely recommend tinker! He rocks!
This guy is awesome! He is so far the best History teacher I've ever had! Very interesting, funny, helpful... Nevertheless his class is pretty hard! You have A LOT to read, so try reading what you have to read every week, otherwise you are going to feel very overwhelmed! His quizzes are pretty easy, but the exams are harder so, study hard for this!
I had Professor Tinker for Honors Seminar with an Outstanding Professor, America in the 60s and 70s. He brought us cookies and generally was a really nice, friendly teacher. He did, however, give difficult pop quizzes and exams. However, if you study, you can get an "A." You'll just have to work for it. Still, he's a helpful and nice guy.
Funny teacher, kept classes interesting, gave a study guide every test. Good stuff. Didnt really like the essay exams though
Overall a really good teacher. Make sure you actually go to class (attendance is not mandatory) and read the chapters each section. The quizzes and tests aren't extremely hard and he gives quite a few opportunities for extra credit. You can tell he really likes what he's teaching, so it's more fun!
The best professor I had at Chico State. I don't even like history -- I can't retain the info. But Professor Tinkler makes things interesting. He knows the subject cold and is willing to assist. Tough classes, for sure, but if you're looking to push yourself, there is no better professor. Highly recommended.
Very good teacher. Take his class!!
He is a great teacher. He has a passion for what he does, and he tries to move that passion in to you. Read the books! He expects a lot of reading, and some essays.
good:)
He explains things very clearly. The all multiple choice exams are harder than the essay/multiple choice exams. There's a quiz almost every week, but they aren't too difficult. Make sure to read carefully!
I think Tinkler is by far the best professor I've had at Chico State! American History wasn't exactly what I wanted to study, however after taking Tinkler's American South class I was hooked! I highly recommend him and any of his classes, personally I really enjoyed the civil war & american south:) the work load is intense at times but is worth it
One of my favorite teachers at Chico State so far. Very passionate about what he teaches, knows what he's talking about. Tries his best to get you involved in the lectures with videos and songs, etc. Used the book a lot for essays. Did not like that CSU, Chico Bookstore is the only place you can purchase his textbook, a bit expensive.
Amazing teacher. Tries to captivate his audience because it is a GE class and not everyone wants to be in it but if you want an A and to learn something take this class with this professor!
History was never my favorite subject, but Tinkler made it pretty easy. You do need to read from the textbook if you want to do well on the quizzes but honestly you can pass just by going off your lecture notes. Make sure not to skip a class, he covers a lot of info in one lecture. Also, the tests are easy just make sure you have an essay in mind.
Amazing teacher and without a doubt the best in the history department. There's nothing bad to say about him, his teaching style or even the coursework.
TInkler is awesome. Always super helpful during office hours. Long lectures, but easy to take notes on. If you study for the exams, you'll do well in the class. Passionate about what he is teaching.
He is the best teacher @ Chico State. His quizzes and tests are really easy. If you need help go to his office hours he will help you. Definitely recommend him.
Great professor. Everything on the test id discussed in the lectures He is clear about what he wants and is very helpful. Notes are quick to the point and explain everything you need to know
Prior to taking Professor Tinkler's class, I hated American history. Professor Tinkler made this subject really interesting and he is excellent at engaging the class. If you come to class and take good notes and study, you don't really have to read the book. Unexpectedly enjoyable class!
Interestingly I took his class because he had excellent reviews BUT a lot was not mentioned. His lectures and subjects of history he discusses were interesting. He has a lot of attitude, not very approachable. His tests are tough and very specific. Be prepared to memorize years & months in history. Your grade will consist of quizzes & tests only.
My favorite professor ever! His lectures are really easy to follow. Not only that, he always gives good feedback on essays. There are quizzes are Friday, but they are mostly from the book and lectures. . He is extremely helpful during office hours. There are extra credit that comes in handy as well. Definitely made history more interesting to learn
Mr. Tinkler is a professor who is interactive, engaging, and cares about his students' progress. He recognizes hard-work and helps those who take the time to ask him questions. I appreciate his engaging and understandable lectures and I appreciate the test formats and the review that he provides for us. Really excellent teacher.
By far the best teacher there is out there. I ran into him coming home on a long bus ride and he took the time to talk to me. Awesome teacher, very down to earth.
TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! You won't regret it! His lectures are interesting and the work is managable. Only 6 quizzes and 3 exams, and your lowest quiz score is dropped. I reccomend going to lecture as well as buying the book.
Robert has such an uplifting spirit with a lot of knowledge of history. His class is not too difficult overall, but expect to put in work if you want an A. The reading is required but you only need to look up the key terms for tests. The quizzes are half lecture half vocab, and tests mult choice and sometimes in class essay. Practice essay b4 class!
I've taken several of his classes and I cannot express how enjoyable they are. He has interesting lectures, has not assigned group projects, and though there is a quite a bit of reading, it is rarely boring. Would recommend his classes!!
I absolutely loved this class and Professor Tinkler! He is passionate and really captures your attention so you aren't falling asleep during lectures. His quizzes are easy (you can read the night before or day of) and he offers EC questions on every one and EC short essays throughout the semester. Tests are tougher but manageable. Also, a great guy
He is a really gifted teacher. Very helpful and pleasant and wants his students to do well.
Dr. Tinkler is probably my favorite Professor that I have this semester . He genuinely cares about each of his students and reaches out to you if he notices you are struggling in his class. Highly recommend him. I would literally be a history major if all of my classes were with him.
Professor Tinkler is an amazing teacher who works his butt off to help his students pass his class. His lectures are interesting and quite entertaining to listen to. Highly recommend him, unless you are going to goof off in his class, because he gets quite upset about it. If you're there to learn the class is amazing!
Hands down one of the best lecturers I've ever had. He adds a bunch of fun facts into the material and makes your experience in the class really enjoyable. I wish I could take every history class with him.
Tinkler is literally my favorite professor ever. I am not a history person at all but he made it so much more interesting. You definitely need to pay attention in class & do the readings. He has quizzes where he includes extra credit. Holds Q&A sessions before exams to help. Wants his students to pass. He will yell at you if you are distracting
Personally, I did not enjoy being in Robert's class. He got mad at students for the smallest things and would get so upset he'd throw things and lose focus of what he was teaching. Tests are unnecessarily hard for a GE course, and involve timed writes on tests. On a positive note, you can tell he is knowledgable and is passionate about history.
I was expecting great things but ended up pretty unhappy. The tests are extremely difficult. I studied for hours and couldn't get higher than a B when I'm generally an A student. His class is graded on 3 tests and 5 quizzes throughout the semester. Definitely have to read a lot and focus in lectures. He also gets really angry over small things.
Prof Tinkler's class was a little hard for me just because I'm terrible at history but overall his class was fun. He found a way to make history entertaining which is rare. A lot of reading, exams, and quizzes. For as bad as I am at history, I was doing fine in the class until the final exam, do not underestimate the difficulty of the final exam!
I absolutely loved this class! Really great history teacher, but can sometimes go off on students that are on their phones. Make sure you STUDY the NOTES-- seriously, if you do, you'll pass everything. Easy A if you go to class and try-- literally hands you answers if you read and go to class.
Do yourself a favor by taking this class! Tinkler is my favorite professor... he truly cares about his students and makes class really interesting. He loves when students participate, so raise your hand and answer/ask questions whenever you get the chance! Take notes, read, and stay off your phone in class!
An excellent professor and human being, Dr. Tinkler is one of the greats in the CSUC History Department. I don't know what the negative reviewers did to get on his bad side, but you would have to really work hard to get there. He is reasonable, good humored, and accommodating, and his classes are engaging and rewarding.
Honestly the best professor at Chico State! Tinkler is awesome! His classes are so informative, and he's such a smart man. He has such a love, and care for what he teaches, and honestly every time I see him he just brightens up my day. Super accessible with helping outside of class. He helped edit most of my papers before they were due. Great guy!!
Although lecture isn't mandatory, the quizzes and tests are usually heavily influenced by them. He gets really annoyed/frustrated quickly when people aren't paying attention to him and that was annoying because it stops him from teaching. Do the reading and pay attention in lecture and you should do fine.
He is an amazing teacher! Best I've had at Chico State so far. I have always been awful at history but he really took the time to make his students understand the material rather then just trying to get through it. Go to his office hours and you will do great! I would take his class again for sure :) A couple quizzes and tests but they aren't hard.
I found his class to be too much for a GE. He did things through the semester that annoyed me, for example, he doesn't understand how to update grades thru blackboard and uses a spreadsheet. His "powerpoint' is useless. I had him the semester of the Campfire and he literally emailed us saying there would be a quiz as soon as we walked in after.
Professor Tinkler is an excellent history teacher. I am not very history savvy but his lectures combined with textbook reading got me an A. You can tell how much he loves what he teaches by how enthusiastic he is when lecturing. Secondly, he is one of the most genuine, kind and understanding teachers I have ever had in my life. Take his class!!
Professor Tinkler 's Civil War class was one of the best history classes I've taken so far. He is a great lecturer and while there is quite a bit of reading, he chooses a lot of relevant and interesting material for us to read. He is also a super nice guy!
Be prepared to read a lot! Great professor, always willing to hear out students, always provides great feedback! A very solid choice!
Tinkler's American Republic class is awesome! Lots of reading but the discussion is so interesting and really unpacks the significance of pre-civil war America. Helped synthesize everything I've learned about American History (I had several aha moments) He treats students with the utmost respect. A MUST take for an upper division history! SO FUN!
Hands down one of the best teachers I've ever had. Take his class if you can, you will thank me later.
This professor is one of the greatest, as he prepares history majors who are in HIST 130H as what it meant to be in the major. He gave us lectures that tell us stories that makes it more engaging. He gave us historical papers that are used so we can understand what is needed to be done. In the end, you will know what it meant to be a citizen in US.
Awesome professor. Class was 99% lectures but he tries really hard to make them not boring (plays videos, adds music, gives funny anecdotes). Grading was literally just from quizzes, the midterm, and the final so attendance wasn't necessary but helped so much in the class. Quizzes were really straight forward. Definitely would take him again.
Tinkler is a great professor. His lectures can feel a little long, but you can tell he tries to make them fun. You need to do the weekly reading because almost all the content on his quizzes is based on the chapters read outside of class. Overall a pretty straight forward class.
Professor Tinkler is an excellent teacher. I took this class in Winter--it was 3 weeks instead of 16 (a week's worth of class in a day). I usually spent 5 hours each day. It was great to complete the class so quickly. Each day had 2-3 lectures, 1-2 video quizzes, 1 quiz, and 1 writing assignment of just 350-500 words. Do the work, get an A.
Professor Tinkler is awesome! Highly recommend him! His lectures are clear and concise, and he gives great feedback.
History major from the UK, did a student abroad in 2018/19. Tinkler made me wanna be a better historian, he made me wanna be more passionate about the discipline. The class was mad interesting and I learnt so much about militay history in a way that made sense. I wish I would rate him a 10/10, because that is the kind of lecturer he is. Choose him
Grades this level 100 class like its graduate work. His grading is unrealistically tough for a GE course. He's a great lecturer but this class is no easy A.
He's a really caring teacher who wants you to succeed. The class is mostly based on your midterm and final exams, with not many assignments. He gives helpful feedback, and the material is mostly about memorizing key concepts.
