Test are a liite hard. Do not bother buying the textbook. Study his notes really well. Gives extra credit assighnments and outside projects. Very helpful to me. His final exam is open notebook Not the best but overall a pleasure to have.

I like him a lot. His tests are mediocre but he grades fairly and he is very pleasant to listen to. For the most part he holds your attention. Very personable.

He's such a nice guy, makes jokes in the class and gives fair exams. You do need the textbook, just not the one he wrote. He gives you a paper to improve your grade, and exempts you from the final if you have an A average in the class. He rocks!!!

If you get an A on the first 3 tests you don't haveto take the final. Tests are easy and multiple choice. Buy the text. The tests are straight from the notes and book. Dr. Tomes is a really nice guy and is very laid back. I got an A in his class.

Never rated a professor till now jus cuz he is so worth it. take the MWF class because he doesn't give fridays. no textbook. only 4 on and off campus assignments. gives metrocards. 10/14 ppl in his previous class got A's. attend his class and do the trip essays and you will definitely get an A.

Horrible professor out there to lower GPAs crazy amounts of readings. You will never know what the test will be on...you may read a 600 page book and there will be two questions on the test about the book....i'm not really learning anything

He will def. put you to sleep. Good guy though. Likes to make jokes. I never had any idea what his tests would have on them. I studied and read like a maniac. He assigns a ton of reading. Extra credit will definitely help your grade. Take him if you like a challenge.

Ok this class will suck the life out of you..BoRiNg..And the people who said this class was easy are definitely RETARDED..He gave 3 MC/TF tests which may sound great (final was essay and he gave us the ques.), but good luck on the T/F part..It's confusing as hell..Plus he gives you like 200 pgs. to read and the tests are only 20 ques..DAMN!!

I took him for two classes and got A's in both of them he an amazing professor he knows his stuff inside out, if you do not like to read don't expect an a he gives you so many chances to get a good grade plus he curves all the grades But I learned a lot in his class and he is a lot of fun!

i had tomes for DNY. he is actually a great teacher who really wants all his students to pass. I rarely went to class (plus he canceled all friday classes) and we only had 8 papers. no homework, no tests, no finals, or midterms. overall i think it was really easy and he's a great & nice teacher.

Professor Tomes is a great professor because he makes classes interesting and is very laid back. He is understanding of the stresses of college life and loves to talk about basically anything that's interesting. I've never seen him get angry. Encourages going into the city for Discover New York classes and will give you advice/help if you ask.

a great prof. he can be quite funny, the class is usually quite boring thou, especially when he actually gets down to teaching about NY which is half-way into the semester. 4 on-campus papers, 4 off-campus, 2/3 mulptiple choice tests. almost nobody did any of the assigned readings and we still got As. he gices u all fridays off.

If you want an interesting class, full of surprises as well as an awesome learning experience this is where you want to be. Easy A if you are willing to participate and pay attention. Very cool and understanding professor.

This class was easy, despite the 8:00 am time. He says that attendance is mandatory and you should only miss 6 classes, but I definitely missed more and I got an A. Easy class, 4 on campus activities, 4 off campus activities. 3 tests. I didnt read anyof the books and still easy A.

omg..the most boring prof. ever! had him 8 in the morning and it was like torture! IDK what everyones talking about..he had never been entertaining..he was kinda wierd but other than that it was not a fun place to be..he relied on the text way too much and never gave back our grades. But he was nice though

He is pretty wierd, but a very easy teacher. Very helpful and pretty lenient with late papers and such. Although, he is strict about tardies (2=1 absence) and allows up to about 5 or 6 absences. 4 on-campus and 4 off-campus papers. Definitely take his class!

I'm not a big fan of history but he is a nice professor. Couldnt keep up with what he was saying but still got an A-. Got through this class with flying colors and idk how. 1st impression is the best so do well on your first test, esp. the essay part. He's really nice but you have to show up to class and participate.

Tomes is a great teacher. if you can, try and get him for Emerging Global Society. 4 tests, though only 3 count, and you can do an optional extra credit assignment. so you can have 5 grades, and only the best 3 count. and his tests are pretty simple if you do the readings. great professor, and great guy. definitely take his class.

TOMES IS THE MAN!!!, I swear, I took his first 3 tests and got an A already, he gives extra credit for attending different discussions, movie events, etc. Then, if you are still behind and want an A and already took 3 of the 4 tests and still need one more. He gives you a 5th grade count with an extra assignment. VERY NICE.

I enjoyed his class. At times he could be a bit boring but overall he keeps the class moving. He loves talking about current events. The book is usually only for home use, but a lot of questions are from the book on test. He thinks he is funny and laughs at his own jokes. He is very helpful and gives credit for trying.

kind of crazy, but has good intentions. talks ALOT but just go on the trip, do the papers, and do the community service and you will definetly get an A. not hard at all.

He is a great professor. I have him 8 in the morning and he always happy to come to class. He is very friendly and funny, so far he is the best on campus for me. If you need help he can be very helpful and flexible with the work. Read his books and you will do well on test and the books is not that long either, I think of it as kindergarten books.

This is a great class for early in the morning or just to start your day. Hes very into it and you can tell he just loves being a historian and that gives me the vigor to study. I always heard one prof yelling, throughout my years here and i finally found out it was him i heard through the halls in marilac lol. great guy

I would recommend him for history or DNY. He is very nice and you can ask him anything you need help with. I had him early in the morning when most of us still sleepy but he came in yelling and try to make it the best class. Do all his work and he will give you an A. Very nice and flexible with the work. Wish have him for HIS too.

This guy is awesome. What he'll do is present you with all the stuff you need to have done by the end of class very early on in the term. In addition, (since it IS a DNY class), he'll take you on trips he leads himself. He may lower your grade for attendance (or lack thereof), though. He's a fair grader, and he's lenient with work IF YOU TELL HIM.

Easy professor. Midterm and final and a few reflection papers on service projects and events you have to attend on and off campus, but you can choose those. He loves NYC history, so it makes the class more enjoyable. He's a fun-loving guy and is usually upbeat. Take him if you can.

Truly one of the most caring and nicest people I have ever met. He's intelligent, and cares about his students. He wants everyone to do well. Extremely understanding. There were 4 tests, and the lowest grade is dropped. You also have the option of an extra assignment to make up for a poor grade. A great class overall.

Really smart guy, knows what he's saying. Nice guy as well. Sometimes it's hard to get a question in with him and when you do, he tends to go off on tangents based off of one word he heard in your question. Can be boring.

Very easy and good global history class, he only gives 4 tests and drops your lowest grade, no midterm and no final. Just read the books he assigns, and try not to fall asleep during the boring lectures. No technology in class, but you can get away w using your phone if you actively participate and answer questions occasionally.

He definitely love what he does. However his class is tough, because in order to pass his tests you MUST read the textbook, and I mean read ! Besides that he sets you up pretty well with extra credit; there's 4 tests, lowest grade gets dropped, and an optional assignment to replace a bad test grade, and he gives 10 points for extra credit trips.

A lot of reading is required for this class. Its better to rent the Marks book since it'll be your textbook and borrow all other books from the library. The optional assignment involves reading a book and writing a report. He is helpful & passionate. The trips were interesting and were extra credit. He does like to randomly call on students.

professor Tomes really wants you to do well, and its very possible, but its not easy. You must must read and come to lectures, and be prepared to take notes. Theres plenty of opportunity for extra credit if you dont do well on tests. If you put the work in youll do well.

Dr. Tomes is really an awesome professor. He only gives four tests and he sends out practice questions a few days before each test. You do have to read but it shouldn't be that hard because all the topics are pretty familiar. He does extra credit trips and a paper. Really great, would definitely take him again!

He's really nice and always cracks jokes to lighten up the mood. The class itself if really easy. He pretty much gives you everything you need to know in the lectures and the tests are true or false. He also gives extra credit and drops the lowest grade. Plus he is really understanding and cares about his students.

Tomes cares about his students and accurately prepares students for his exams. With four per semester, the lowest of them being dropped, and easy extra credit (trips to the city), you have no excuse to earn less than an A.

Tomes is a fantastic professor. You get four tests, but only three count, he drops the lowest grade. If your grade is still bad then you can do an optional assignment to substitute another grade. He does walking tours and other stuff for extra credit too. Corny professor and talks the whole time, but if you can focus and take notes, you'll do well.

Professor Tomes is a really great professor. He is always so energetic which amazes me! His lectures can be a bit boring, but pay attention and participate and you'll be good! He gives at least 30 to 50 points worth of extra credit which would be added on to your test scores. He gives 4 tests, and drops lowest score. Just make sure you read a lot!

Easy class. He just lectures every class and doesn't really care if you have your phone out. Multiple field trips into the city to get an extra 10 points on any test. Has four tests including the final and drops one test grade. You don't have to show up to the final if you like your grade. miss a class you have to get it from someone else.

One of the best professors at St. John's. Classes are lectures but Prof Tomes makes them very interesting. He has a great passion for this subject and wants his students to succeed. Go to class, take some notes, read and you will be fine. He drops your lowest test score and offers extra credit. Would definitely take him again.

A very unique personality, but if you hate reading and buying textbooks I wouldn't recommend him. He definitely helped me find history to be more interesting (I'm not a fan) but we had four textbooks for his class. He had a cool trip at the end and he brought art into the course which was nice, but you better pay attention if you want to do well.

While there was a lot of reading and the whole class was lectures, I still enjoyed the class. The lectures could get a little boring at times but he did his best to keep it interesting. He is always open to questions and is very kind and encouraging. He really wants you to succeed and gives a study guide before each test and extra credit.

Professor Tomes has a very unique soul. He spent some class time talking to his toy dinosaurs, but other than that he is very passionate about history. He is super chill and he gives so many extra credit opportunities. He drops the lowest test grade out of 4 exams. Not much notes, but I had to buy 5 books for his class.

Dr. Tomes is a legend here at St. John's University. He is able to combine interesting topics from the lectures and gives his own narration through his comedic prowess. I found his lectures to be top-notch as well. Dr. Tomes is able to challenge the class' critical thinking skills and apply them to the course.

Tomes is a sweet guy that wants everyone to do well, but you have to work for it. If you fail a test you can make up your grade with written assignments. You have to buy all the textbooks and do the readings or else the tests will be very hard. He's understanding and eventually will make sure everyone does well in his class but it isn't easy.

Dr. Tomes is a great man. His lectures are a little all over the place, but are funny and engaging. For the assignments, I focused on getting the info from the books and not his lectures. However, he truly cares about all his students and I would recommend him to anyone!

Dr. Tomes really cares about his students and is very accessible by phone or email. His 4 assignments, however, consisted of multiple small essays that were based on his lectures and on the books. They were time consuming and you would only have a week to do them. Make sure you budget your time accordingly.

Tomes is a funny and knowledgeable guy and he knows a lot about what he does. His class consisted of four papers with about 6-8 essays/paragraphs in each. Pretty easy grader if you what to do and do it right. Can be an easy A if you put a little more than average effort.

Dr. Tomes is cool, I had his class at 7:30 am and a few weeks into the semester he made it asynchronous and posted the lectures online. There are only 4 assignments given, but they entail a lot of reading and writing so beware. He gives you only one week to do them and doesn't assign the reading from beforehand. Not difficult, just time consuming.

I honestly loved Dr. Tomes! He is such a kind person! I like him as a person but I didn't enjoy the class itself. In every class, he lectures. There are a few papers that aren't bad just a little bit annoying. For tests, i wouldn't be a fair judge. He had personal issues going on while in his class. Overall I would say not to take this professor.

He's a really nice guy! Even though the textbook came in handy at times, most of his exams (only 3-4) were based on his lectures. He does go on tangents and is boring but his exams are sooo easy. Don't worry too much about analyzing the text. Just take good notes on his lectures.
