He's the worst teacher I've had in this University.. don't ever take him!
He is the worst teacher at the university...do not expect to pass the class. He does not return tests to anyone and you have to pass 4 quizzes with 100% to pass the class basically. He is RIDICULOUS!
Horrible teacher. Brags about how many people drop his class, goes out of his way to take off points, and constantly goes over his alloted time (My class was supposed to be over at 1:30, and on numerous occasions he went until at least 1:35).
Absolute worst professor I've ever had. Postponed 1st exam 4 times. His lectures suck. Expects GC1 students to learn the material like graduate students. Lectures are boring, he's unorganized, and the tests are nearly impossible. A burden to UNF.
He is very unorganized and doesn't use class time in a mannerly fashion. Takes 2 and 1/2 months to return test materials. Class average on test 2 was a 46! Do no take this professor or you will end up take Chem 1 again trust me. He makes UNF look bad.
Where do i begin. basically he is a ruthless man. Test are postponed. He takes two months to hand back tests. class average on exam 2 was 46. At all cost I urge anyone to not take his class. In, fact he should be fired, he lacks teaching ability. horrible

The most horrible person I've ever met in my entire life. Displays a smug grin when announcing how many people failed the exams. Gets off on failing people...the more the better. Avoid him at all costs.

HORRIBLE professor! Easy if you just need the credit but if you are a biology or chemistry major, you will leave this class with absolutely no foundation and Chem II will be a NIGHTMARE!

Hmmmm.....where to begin.....well for starters he is an ineffective communicator. He may be a genius but he cannot communicate his ideas to his student..which duh....is the main objective of teaching. For the love of God....don't take him.
He is probably the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. Doesn't explain concepts clearly at all. Likes to babble about things and not directly answer your question until the end of class. And this was only INTRO to Chem! I would NEVER take him again.
Horrible professor! He graded some of our final exams wrong and he didn't even realize it until the next semester had started. He confuses himself when he is writing on the board, as well as the students. Take Dr. Healy if you can. He is much better

People aren't lying. He's the worst teacher ever. He knows what he's talking about but thats the only person. Can't get the information across to the students. Test are extremely hard and he doesn't really help when you ask. Impossible to get a good grade. PLease avoid at all cost.
Good professor. A lot of homework but the tests are based from them. I went to his office and whatever questions I had he answered and explained.
Dr. Vergenz is a very nice person, but doesn't make concepts clear, making his class very hard to pass, even if you study hard and do all of the homework. This comment comes from an A and B student with a 3.7 GPA, just so you know.
Vergenz....dear lord do not take this class with Vergenz. If you value a good GPA then you should stay away. The only reason I am passing this class is because of the tutorial CD's in the back of the chem book. ESQs and his exams are the devil
He ran out of time in lecture telling personal stories and still tested us on the material not covered. He had asked questions on the exam that were covered in homework he thought he assigned, but hadn't. He didn't help interpret lab material, and was very evasive with questions, no help at all!
Dont doubt his smarts but hes unable to communicate what he knows.Hes obscure in lecture,takes forever to return graded papers,thats if he hasnt lost them.He must have tenure,for I have no idea how the school allows him to keep teaching.Even other teachers in the sci.dep.advise kids not to take him

This man is crazy. His tests were hard, he laughed at you if you failed, and he is obvious about picking "favorite" students. He will not help you at all. This man is the devil!
His lectures don't pertain to the tests. He seems like he knows what he's talking about, but makes it difficult for the students to understand. By far, the worst teacher I have EVER had!
He takes forever to return graded papers--because he, himself, does not grade them--he has a "grader" whom he depends on. LAZY! Also, he is very vague in lecture and does NOT believe in reviewing information for exams...Definitely do NOT take him!
This teacher sucks, he cant teach anything and makes u take pass or fail tests and if you get 2/10 wrong you fail, he also loves to give tests that he never ever goes over the material! he is unclear and not bright.
Vergenz is a teacher that I really wanted to like. I have been very interested in Chemistry since high school but this professor has managed to single handedly remove any interest I had in the subject. The sad part is that he is clearly very intelligent; he just can't express concepts effectively.

I would suggest that you never take him for chemistry. He is very smart, but can not teach at all. Also he does not grade his own paper, and sometimes they are graded wrong, so mack sure you check your tests when you get them back.

Worst teacher ever!!! He can not teach at all. He knows a lot about chemistry but fails to teach it to his students. I think he gets off on failing students. Do yourself a favor and take another professor!!!
Do not be fooled by the cross that he wears around his neck, this teacher is the devil! He is very knowledgeable but he never lets you forget it. He held on to the first test until the drop date so that no one would leave his class. If you get stuck with him, pray for a good lab teacher.
Seems like a nice guy, but his class is ridiculously hard and there is no forgiveness for mistakes. Also, the study sesion outside of class is taught by another student and impossible for those of us with busy lives.
This guy is the worst ever! He would write problems on the board and then realize what he put up was incorrect. He confussed the whole class on a daily basis.
Okay, not only is he an aweful teacher, he gives 5 different Essential Skills Quizzes. You do get lots of chances to take them but if you don't pass 1 out of five, all of them don't count and you lose 20 percent of your grade. Also, keep everything, just in case he messes up your grade.

Very difficult class. Bring your A game and be ready to teach yourself a lot. Its very possible to get an A if you put in the effort.
Let me start by saying that as a person, Prof. Vergenz is a good man. BUT I HATED HIS CLASS.i dropped his class after the first test. He is confusing, he doesn't tell you what he's doing, we started this online hw bullcrap that doesn't help. His notes are confusing and his quizzes are BS. DO NOT take his class if u want to pass.
My first thought after taking this class is, how can a University hire someone with so little teaching skill. I learned absolutely nothing in this class. He is the most unorganized professor I have ever seen, his office looks like a bomb went off, and he hasn't returned any grades to us. Labs are a joke, he is never prepared. DONT TAKE THIS CLAS
People this guy really needs a life..he is a pure DUMBA**..doesn't know how to teach..acts as if he is the coolest professor on planet but HELL NO! he wants everything his way..if you want to apply things you learned from high school he doesn't let you so be prepared if you are taking him..HE SUCKS BAL**!
Professor had the difficult task of taking over a class 7 weeks into the semester. however, he did the best he could to comply with the previous' professors syllabus and this greatly added to his load for the semester. Anyone (myself too) who makes a comment on this site already has a strong opinion making the site statistically inaccurate.
Lectures were vauge. Crammed 4 chapters in 3 class sessions because he ran out of time. No specific information on what to study for. "Just memorize the book and you should be fine, but know all of the exceptions" Did not go over formulas/ how to solve problems. Worst teacher I have had in my college career.

It is from my bottom of my heart that I say that this professor is the worst I ever had. He's extremely unstructured, he doesn't give points for partly solved problems. HE had to take 2 chem lectures on top of the ones he already had. He went very fast during the lecture BUT if you went to his office hours everything would be cleared out. Watch out with your exams....he usually misgrades them. Awesome if you really want to learn, not an easy class.
Vergenz may know what he's teaching but he doesn't know how to teach it. He spent three weeks coving the first 20 pgs of the text book (scientific method and what an atom was). The way he does homework is ridiculous and he does group work in a 100 person lecture class. Try to get someone else if you can.
If Vergenz came in and lectured every day for the entire class period at a greater-than-preschool pace, this class would be worth your time. The tests come straight from the textbook, so don't even throw your time away going to class; sit in the library for a couple of hours and study the book, and you'll be golden come test time.
Vergenz spends gobs of valuable class time telling you what's going to be on a quiz or test rather than teaching the material. My hunch is his TA's grade the tests, which is why they are often grossly misgraded. He spends 30 minutes of almost every class giving the same six "ESQ" essential skills quizes; time he can use to teach.
terrible teacher...cant teach.is never organized and tests are hard.you have to pass 5 quizes and by pass i mean 100% or 0%. or ur grade is dropped a whole letter.. he gave me a "D" in his class, i went and talked to him, he said he made a mistake and will change it to a "c" but he changed it to a "B".. i was happy, no complaints but what the hell.
He really sucks at teaching. He doesnt care whether you pass or fail.Only way to pass his class is to get a tutor. He has 5 ESQs thats worth 10% of the grade and you must past each with a 90% or better or you wont recieve the 10%. His test are hard because he takes off points for no reason. Ill advise you to take another professor.
He is a pretty good professor. He is not always available for help because he has such a big class. Overall he explains concepts well. His graders are fair. I got an A in the class, but had to work very hard at it.

Vergenz is brilliant, but just can not get down to anyone else's level. He is a mess mentally. My final grade said a C, but only after I met with him knowing that was incorrect did it get changed to a B due to the fact that he put a 69 instead of my correct 89 that I got on an exam. CHECK AND SAVE YOUR GRADES, he messes everything. Nice guy though.
Stand up guy. Lectures need to concentrate on actual book problems. Keep a good poker face and stay positive if you plan on making it. Consider it Physics with aspects of Chemistry on steroids.
An excellent instructor for students who wish to learn chemistry. The poor reviews I just read about Vergenz are from "losers". Student who don't study. Keep it up Bob !
He does not know how to teach. His lectures are very scattered(if he lectures at all. He makes you think that the test covers the entire chapter but they only cover a few main topics. However, although he makes the class hard it is VERY passable with a good lab professor (Melissa Bush) and copies of last years tests.
Vergenz is a extreamly nice person. He is always willing to help during his office hours, however he does expect a lot out of you. I had to do to a toutor every week to understand his lectures. If you are ready to bust your butt then take the class, it is passsable...

He's horrible! And he doesn't teach you anything and could care less whether you understand or not! He doesn't like a lot of questions, the homework does not come from the book. He uses the nastering chemistry website and is VERY difficult. He makes alot of mistakes and corrections on it. I could go on and on. Bottom line, he is NOT a good teacher!
He is awesome, Im a chem major cant wait to take him again his hw isnt that hard and the ESQs arent that bad like everyone says I cant wait to take him for physical chem. Hes tough just read book most questions on exams are quanatative
Hated the guy in PCHMI, but his way of teaching and testing grew on me after a while. Give him a chance and LISTEN to what's going on in lecture. PCHM I and II is unlike anything you have ever had before, trust me.
The only thing I ever used my textbook for was the periodic table. His lectures do not correspond with the homework or the book. He assigns homework online and then teaches you how to do it after you have already submitted it.He is so scatterbrained and could never get to the point before the end of class.
Vergenz is one insane man, but if you go up to his office, hes a sweet heart. He uses online homework, but I refused to do it, and still recieved a 77%. Learn your periodic table, hes a stickler for that.
although he has a bad rep, he's really out there to help students learn as much as they can. I've just met many students who want a grade to be handed to them... whereas he requires that you actually learn the material, so many give him a bad name because he's doing his job. he's great though... if you really want to learn anything about chemistry.
He's very passionate about chemistry but he can't teach very well. He hands you things and expects you to learn it yourself. He spent the whole class time doing TWO problems and I still wasn't prepared for his ESQ. He doesn't even gives you study guides so you don't know what the test will be on.
He crams stuff, he takes off way too many points, he thinks u already know the material. His extra credit is nothing, but he leaves u in a position where u become so desperate that u have to go for it. Take this class w/ anyone else.
DROP THE CLASS NOW! Seriously, people told me to and I didn't- biggest mistake of my life. He means well but is a HORRIBLE teacher. I really didn't learn anything from him and he NEVER grades anything. I have no clue what grade I have right now. It's ridiculous. I hate that class. We started with 75 and are left with 28. awesome.
Odd teaching style. Might as well just study the textbook and give up on his lectures. He is a nice guy but not a great teacher.
His class is NOT hard, yes many people failed, but for the most part those were the kids that wanted everything spoon-fed to them, if you just pay attention, look at the book and study about 15 minutes a week you will get an A, thats what I did.
My advice to people who take this class: Don't be an R-tard. This class is much easier than people make it out to be. He gives you 10-12 chances to pass 5 ESQs, which never ever change. And his test are completely taken out of the HW assignments he gives out, only with different numbers. This guy is easy. Don't whine and study a bit for once.

Not a hard class at all, but his style of teaching is very strange. He gets off topic and it seems like he spends more time trying to spark an interest in chemistry rather than actually teaching the material. This term he must have missed at least a quarter of the classes because of illnesses that he encountered throughout the entire term.
I didn't go to class because I didn't like the way he teaches.. Feels like a waste of time as he goes quite slow. He is nice though. I learned the material by reading the book. I got A's on tests so should have gotten an A BUT I forgot about most of the HW all the time which lowered my grade.. So DO THE HW! (There's lots of it)

He dosen't really teach(Puts you in groups and says "do this") TONS of hw.Tests are 25ish questions (3 tests) Multiple chances on ESQ's. Basically you'll end up teaching yourself.

Vergenz does not teach at all however if you do his assigned online homework you can get an A. You get multiple chances to take the ESQs (quizzes) and we only have the final exam. I have an A in the class and I barely try.
I made all A's my first semester, but this class was impossible. Worst Prof. ever. Says he will do things -post hw,grades,etc(he doesn't)Doesn't respond to emails. Hardly there for office hrs.Doesn't really teach anything until last 2 weeks of semester. I thought that all the bad reviews were from slackers, but I was wrong DON'T take this professor

He is the absolute worst teacher I have had yet. He regives the ESQ's which seems to be good, but he does not teach you anything. He usually shows up to class 10 minutes late, and then talks about nothing for 35 minutes which gives him about 3 and a half minutes to teach. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!

I show up to all my classes n went to his class everyday and I took AP chem in highschool. I didn't learn, because he doesnt teach anything most of the time. He likes to ramble on about nothing. Gives ESQs every week with 3-4 quizes at a time, n u only have 15 minutes to do all 3. I passed the 1st quiz n THOT the class wud b easy.LEARN ON UR OWN!!

If you care about your grade you will find a way to take another Prof. Be prepared to teach yourself everything needed to pass the class. He gives Essential skills Quizes(no other professor gives these quizes) which are not included in your grade for the class but if you don't pass them he drops your class grade down 1 letter; he's always late to

DO. NOT. TAKE. His lack of teaching will hurt you. He left us 3/4 of the way through the semester, and I learned more in 2 weeks with his replacement than I did with him. ESQ's take up most of the time, he lectures on stuff without the class understanding it, and the online part is due before he goes over it in class. DO. NOT. TAKE!
You have to read the textbook to succeed in his class. He goes over the math and concepts from the textbook, but expects you to have read it beforehand. Grades come from a series of quizzes, and the final exam. The quizzes are graded harshly, but you get multiple attempts on them to get a better grade. But you really do HAVE to read the book.
Hard professor. Don't take if you're expecting an easy grade; he expects you to learn independently and ask questions in class on things that aren't understood. Mastering Chemistry is a huge part of the class, and is a huge pain in the ass. Overall, you need to put in a lot of time if you expect to pass this class.
You're expected to learn some topics on your own. He gives a lot of homework which prepares you well for the exam. He provides plenty of resources for a motivated student to succeed in this course. His syllabus states that you're expected to work 6 hours per week outside of class - true. I've learned a lot so far and am glad I took his course.

Has little to no concern about students. Grading is unfair .You might as well be taking an online course because you have to teach yourself everything, and even then you will still see random and untaught material on his exams. By ANY MEANS do not take Dr. Vergenz for any class, you are wasting your money and time.
Prof loves his material, puts lots of thought, effort, games, into forcing students to learn, rather than coast. Summer semester: online hw often due before the lecture on it; extremely difficult if you've had little exposure to chm and have little self-control. Merely hard otherwise. Borrow a book and buy access code online. Always do reading!

Most of the bad ratings are from spoon fed students who expect the answers to be given to them. Just like any class, you need to READ THE BOOK, his poor lectures are no excuse. If you take the time to study and actually do the homework to understand this subject you will make it through with an A. His tests are very simple, and the grading is fair.
Don't take this guy the wrong way, he really tries to make classes interesting. Unfortunately though, he often rambles on about stuff that has nothing to do with the tested material. Vergenz is a wonderful professor! He was very clear in all his lectures and moved at a slow pace so that you wouldn't get lost. You will have to work for your grade. You must read the chapters before lecture! You will have a LOT of online hw, but it is really helpful in understanding the material. He is so kind! TAKE HIM.

Horrible Teacher. Rambles on about things that are not on the test. Purposely has class on the day before thanksgiving to tell 10 students out of 100 that there will be a quiz next class. Therefore, the other 90 students fail. Pretends to be nice, don't be fooled. I got a good grade, because I had to study the book myself, the professor is useless
This man has to be one of the worst professors I have ever encountered. His lectures aren't clear, and his exams contain questions from optional reading handouts. If you don't scour your book and all of his teaching handouts you won't do well. It is very difficult to figure out what he will ask on an exam.
Would NOT recommend him for Intro to Chem. He is very unorganized and goes off on tangents about random things during the lecture. He does random attendance checks and pop quizzes, it's very hard to be prepared for his class. He's not a bad person, however his class is just unorganized and poorly lectured.
Gen. chem is an extrmely hard class to begin with, but he makes it worse. Go to his office hours and he will help you, and clarifys everything. Go to ACE as well for tutoring. I got an A because I worked really hard on this class. If you are not going to work hard, you will fail,simple as that. But it is possible to pass his class.

Honestly, the worst professor I have ever had. The only reason I knew what he was talking about is because this is the second time I have taken this class. Says attendance is mandatory but never takes attendance. Doesn't respect his students at all, and tries to treat you like you're five. Don't take him unless you absolutely have to.

Vergenz's class will prepare you if you plan on taking Gen Chem 6, if there is one. If you you're not majoring in a Chemistry related subject, you are going to be easily frustrated by all the things he expects from you. The homework is probably the easiest grade you can get in this class. ESQs suck. Test's aren't multiple choice. Not for Casuals.
Don't bother going to the lecture, all he did was read the slide show that is already on mastering chemistry word for word. If you want to learn something take a different professor.

Vergenz cares about all his students and answers all questions, hes very helpful in office hours. He requires a lot of memorization, which is helpful in the future for chem majors. Real nice professor. I enjoyed his technique at teaching but it was not very helpful or practical. He did offer office hours but he was not much help. I would recommend taking this professor if you truly nerd it up when it comes to chemistry.
Prof. Vergenz is a really nice guy. He does expect you to learn some stuff on your own but he gives handouts that are very helpful for the class and for future chem classes. I would take this professor if you are willing to study and learn things on your own.
