Has a tremendous grasp of his specialty (Romantic literature) and is a nice guy.

Everybody doing all right? Having a good tiiiiime? He's a good guy with a very dry sense of humor. His class is pretty easy, but there's a lot of reading. Very relaxed class, lots of good times.
Comes into class everyday and says: "having a good time? enjoying yourselves?". He's a good guy and makes the class fun. Downside:He makes you think you're acing the class, but then you find out you got a B.
Very informative and knowledgable, especially with Romanticism and the Victorian Age. He is very fair in grading. His lectures offer new perspectives on the readings and there are always lively discussions in his classes
Yeah, dry doesn't begin to describe it. Speciality, Shmecialty. The guy can't read. He makes _KEATS_ sound bad. I had thought that was impossible. He looks like Mark Hamel, the ****. His voice? Think Chris Rock doing the white guy voice...
Really nice guy. Once you get past the Ben Stein-on-lithium delivery, you'll find that he simply knows his stuff and is a true wealth of knowledge. Course material is easy as can be. A great class.
he just lost a son and is a nice guy. BUT he is really BORING! Lots of reading and stuff.
You have to approach his class with a sense of humor because if you don't you WILL fall asleep...I hear his old football nickname was Waxy...
Howwwwww are we doing? great teacher, easy going with dryyyy sense of humor. 'inspired the red sox with quizzes.' too many quizzes though, no tests.
He has a monotone voice, but is really passionate about the books he chooses. Weekly quizzes, answer 5 out of 6- write something if you're not sure, he might give credit. Two papers and about 8 books to read. Most books chosen are available on SparkNotes, of you might've read some in high school.
I loved this class! He is funny, and he cares about his students!!! I am taking another class with him in the spring, because of how much I enjoyed this class!
I really liked Waxler. I heard he was boring but i thought he was very intelligent and he analyzed the literature very clearly. He was also pretty entertaining. I would definitely take him again. He has a lot of pop quizzes though.
monotone voice, and sorta boring. but he graded pretty easy
he is an awesome teacher, always interested in what you want to say, there is no wrong or write.he is open-minded.you have to show up to class if you want to pass,3 strikes youre out.i would say he is one of the best teachers i've had in this university. i highly recommend him!
So many books to read- 9 in 5 weeks! It's the 2nd time I've had him as a prof. Teaches exactly in the same way. Lots of "pop" quizzes (answer 5 out of 6 questions). Essays for midterm & final (you have to weave in important details & quotations and put whatever thoughts you have in your head onto paper). He loves liturature and it shows.
My first time taking him for a course, he gives pop-quizzes every class (6 question, need to answer 5) and spends the entire class TALKING. He asks for class opinions but really wants his own regurgitated. Most boring English class I've ever taken, and it's my major.

A Sam Neil lookalike with a Ben Stein voice. But do not be fooled. Once you catch yourself from daydreaming while looking at the syllabus, he is one interesting cat. Excellent with poetry interpretation and demonstrating important themes, you really enjoy going to his classes. Do the reading and the quizzes are no problem.
I really didn't like him, I asked him for help because i was having trouble, he told me to withdraw and take something easier next semester!
Waxler really knows his stuff. He is insightful and very willing to help students. Likes alot of discussion although I like to hear what he has to say especially.
Babe magnet!
too hot for the average student
He is awesome. He expects you to do 400 level college work material and writing but that is what you signed up for. Other than that, he is very clear about what he wants, quizzes in every class but very easy if you do the reading. Don't take the class if you hate to talk because he makes every student talk about the readings but love the guy!
What can you say about this incredible man? He rocks.
Teaching style is awful - simply not engaging. A flatout hack.
Great professor. Runs class at a good pace, not too fast or slow. Gives quizzes which are easy if you do the reading. No tests, just midterm and final. Very knowledgeable...and oh yeah...nice baby blue eyes!
Gives you a good sense of the cultural and literary sweep of the times. Good close reading of the literature too. Intersting.
He knows all that is literature and you can tell he has an immense passion for it. Plus, any teacher that has a huge picture of themselves on the wall of their office is great by me! Just a tip: for his papers, write down everything he says and use his vocabulary; he'll love that. No final, must write three 8 page (minimum) papers
Waxler's got it all! He must have learned it from Larschan.
The man knows the Romantic Age. At his best moments, he is like Blake's Tyger--burning bright in the forests of the night. Waxler can illuminate the darkness!

Good course on complexity of language. Two short papers, one long paper, three presentations and extensive journal. Good class discussions
Solid class. Good exploration of the Romantic writers. Major poets and Frankenstein. Two comprehnsive essays and many quizzes.
What can I say? He's simply The Best!
He's a really nice guy. The class can be boring at times but he really explains that literature so you can understand all of the underlying meanings. There are many small quizzes and 3 major essays.
Cool dude. Lot of interesting conversation about stories related to multicultural American themes. Waxler knows the material and generates a lot of ideas.
Waxler knows the Romantics--he is one , I think. Anyway it is worth taking this course. He clearly likes this stuff.
Nice guy, knows his stuff. His manner of speaking is somewhat dry, but he's rarely boring. His lectures are insightful and interesting, his essay assignments aren't too difficult, and you have a choice of three topics to write about, which I liked. He gives a lot of quizzes, so be sure you don't slack on the reading.
Took him for Jewish Lit--great course. Made me think about my own background even though I am not Jewish.
He is amazing. Take a class with him if you can. i am taking a class with him now and i plan to take another class with him ASAP cause he is just that good
I've had him 3 times and will again before I graduate. Don't let the monotone voice throw you off; he is one of the best professors on campus. Always welcomes student insight and will NEVER make you feel stupid for having an opinion. A fair grader; I improved from a B+ to A by taking him again. Definitely one of the good guys.
Cool dude. Knows the material. I would take him again.
Waxler is passionate about the Romantic Age.And he makes you feel passoinate about it too. I think he is truly an inspirational teacher. I would take him again.
Waxler is a great professor, really teaches students how look at literature. Class is always fun and interesting. Extensive papers but as long as you do the reading, they are not bad. WARNING DO NOT MISS A SINGLE QUIZ.
Waxler is a great professor, really teaches students how look at literature. Class is always fun and interesting. Extensive papers but as long as you do the reading, they are not bad. WARNING DO NOT MISS A SINGLE QUIZ.
Easy-peasy lemon squeezie. Just don't miss the quizzes. It's kind of important to go to class because you analyze what you need for the essays. You can easily find the poems and short stories online, don't bother getting the book. I got a B, but that's because I put in near zero effort in this class.
Interesting and fun. I learned more about teaching from him, the way he conducts class, than I learned from any education classes I have taken.
By far one of the best professors on campus. So passionate; what he teaches is his world, and it's contagious.Finds a way to relate the subject matter to real life, in a philosophical kind of way.Expects thoroughness on essays, so try to open up when you write them-he appreciates it and his commentary is always interesting.Take as often as possible
A good prof.Chance to discuss poems in detail but also worthwhile sense of the larger issues the writers are thinking about. Thinks attendance and participation very important. Intellectual challenge.
Clear as a bell but very serious about the stories and what they mean. You might actually believe that you were at a college with intellectual substance. But do you really want that challenge?
Awesome professor. A++ Can't say enough good things. Take him as long as you're not a complete slacker. Quizzes every Friday, mandatory attendance, 2 big essays. Not a stressful class at all but those two essays took a loongg time. You can find an old edition of the book for $5, rather than paying $120 for a new one! Or just find the poems online
Bob Waxler is a great professor. After you read his book, you will want to get to know him better. 2 8-page essays and a quiz every week. Just read the materials and you'll do great and learn a lot.
Probably the best class I've taken yet. It was fun and interesting. The field trips were an added bonus. Highly recommend, especially the Writing about the Ocean class!
I liked this course and learned a lot about the books and the ideas behind the books
Seminar on Hemingway and Carver. I knew about H but not C before the seminar started.Turned out I learned a lot about both writers and gained a new appreciation of literature in general. Some short papers and a long paper.Great discussions made the class especially interesting.
Reading quizzes every Friday, mandatory attendance, 2 Essays (one in place of midterm, one in place of final) Read 6 books throughout the semester and basically had class discussions on them every week. It was boring but not difficult to pass this class if you do the reading.
Exciting discussion of all eight novels. A lot of quizzes. Two imaginative essays. Extra credit projects too. Great course.
Bob waxler is possibly the best professor on the Umass dartmouth campus. He is electrifying in the sense of how much he knows. Monotone voice, but other than that, the best. period. take EVERYTIME you can.
clear, cool and clearly cool. Take his class if you can.
Professor Waxler is the best teacher ever. He really explains the books that are for class and one doesn't need to really worry about the quizzes because he usually talks about them 2 classes before the quiz. Also very helpful and the books he picks out are really cool. Anyone should try and take his class
Special Topics course--The Journey. And we were on one the whole semester!! One great book after another--from Nabokov to Camus to Kerouac I really liked it all the way through!
If you love to read great literature, you will love Waxler's classes. All of the poems, stories, and books he assigns are important and very profound. If you miss the significance of any of the works, his insightful commentary will show you the way. This is a real lit class. Some people thought the classes were boring but I couldn't disagree more!
The guy's got mojo
Professor Waxler is the man! Great teacher, funny guy, interesting class. He really knows his stuff and it's not boring at all. One quiz every week (which are easy if you read and pay attention) and two big papers. I wish more professors were like him!
Cool exploration of modern literature focused on how we struggle to discover identity in society--I think students see themselves in the characters and class discussion. A real learning experience.
My favorite Professor! I have taken countless classes with him and find myself growing as a person in each one! He genuinely cares about each individual's development. He is such an interesting guy and is so down to earth. His classes are engaging and his quizzes are straight forward as long as you've read the material. A+. I'm inspired by him!
Amazing professor! Don't be intimidated by the 10 required readings! All the novels were interesting and fairly easy to read. I highly recommend him! Lots of reading (a book a week) but you'll be better for it! 1 mdterm, 1 final, both essay. A 5 question quiz/week on the book of the week. Easy A if you enjoy reading.
Jewish literature.Actually turns out to be similar in approach to other lit courses I have had with Waxler. Lot of reading of stories and lot of conversation. Quizzes each week and some essays. Discussions are the best part.
Survey of British Literature 2 Interesting, especially for a survey type course. Gave us good sweep of the 19th and 20th centuries--starting with William Blake and the Romantics Poets--Waxler's favorites, I think. Rigorous reading and good discussions. Three essays and a lot of quizzes. Could also memorize poems for extra credit--cool!
Waxler is a cool dude. This short story course is a must for anyone trying to get some lit credits. Interesting reading and neat discussions.
This course is about Jewish literature (mainly American), but it is really about my life and family--at least it made me think about them and past generations, too. And i am not Jewish.
Great teacher, thanks to him I enjoy reading now.
Lit and Society. A lot of books to read, but they were all interesting. The discussions with the prof. made the classes even more interesting. I like books much better now that I had Waxler to guide me.
took both lit&society and jewish lit classes. didnt read one book and got an A. if you attend class and pay attention to the discussion super easy to get a good grade. weekly quizzes are easy as well. if you take long enough you just pass it in at the end of class (after hes gone over all the answers)
You need to read the books carefully if you want to get the most out of the course, but the discussions are very helpful. A lot of quizzes, but Waxler never goes over them in class, so it's not worthwhile to try to hold onto the quizzes until the end of class. The reading is substantial but usually very interesting.
Best lit professor at UMD. Workload is reasonable and content is interesting. The man knows his stuff!
I like the way Waxler chooses interesting books and the way we engage in discussion, although the classes seem too big for that purpose. A lot of quizzes--keep us reading. And a couple of longer essays. Makes literature seem worthwhile.
The Ocean and Literature course is a must. Take it if you can.
Very clear instructions, wants everyone to participate. If you read the stories and attend class you will receive a good grade. Makes class interesting and choosing books with great topics. Overall a great professor.
Liked the deep exploration of specific poems from the period. Some discussion, a few quizzes, a lot of analysis. Like poetry a lot better now.
Upper level literature course on topic of "the journey"--Waxler thinks life is a journey and literature is, too. Could be he's right. Risky business anyway. I dig it!
Bob Waxler is an inspiration. He is so deeply passionate about his content. Take his class, it changed my outlook on literature and life.
Waxler is very passionate about his area in study, but he is also very boring, I found myself falling asleep in class. We had a quiz once a week, very easy 5 points, just read the stories he assigns and they were actually very intersting. He goes on even when class is overy probably 5 minutes after. He says class in mandatory but i never went.
interesting and energetic guy
Dr. Waxler is a great professor. His passion for literature in a book, not Ipad, is inspirational. His class is not only good for one's academic development, but also for one's soul.
ABSOLUTE BEST PROFESSOR! He is the nicest person, very interested in literature, and cares for his students. He is funny and very intelligent. As long as you try, you will do very well!
Probably one of my favorite professors and courses so far while at UMD. Professor Waxler wants everyone that takes his class to actually learn something meaningful about themselves. There's 8-10 short books and 1-2 (easy) quizzes on every book. Occasional short papers. He only allows 3 absences. I would take another class with him in a heartbeat.
Waxler is a very smart man and gives good lectures, but that's it. He is very old fashioned in his teaching style and doesn't really engage with anyone in class. I went to ask for help with him once and it felt like an interrogation. Make sure you don't get sick or miss a class ever.
Professor Waxler retired a few years ago. I know so many people that were waiting to get into his classes that are so disappointed. He was the absolutely the best professor I have had.
