He is an MIT grad so he knows his stuff. Explains things well and will answer any questions until you understand the material. If you’re taking Math 222 and EMA 201 concurrently, then I highly suggest him. Tests and homework are difficult. You will need to go to walk-in help quite often to get the homework assignments done.
Not Bad. Easy to understand. Does Lots of Examples. Exams Not Bad. Challenging final.
Cocky MIT prof , exams are irrelevant to his teachings, this guy is a a s s!!!
His homeworks are time consuming and his exams are very difficult. His lectures are boring and feel redundant - plus in 1800 its hard to stay awake anyway. Do all book problems to do well on exams.
Not very personable, but he is clear and concise. Many examples in class and exams are only 3 questions, but not impossible.
He's meticulous and dry in class, but you still can't follow him, all in all he's taken something i used like (physics) and made it suck. His goal is to trick you on the tests and says he hopes we refer to him as "that **** witt" after we take his class.
HARD. There are only 3 questions on the exams and there's always 1 I leave blank (although I did get a point for drawing a dot with an arrow and then writing "wtf?") He is the most boring monotonous prof ever, and the only time we can stay awake is when we sit in the back and make inuendo jokes about things he always says, like "slender member."
This guy is not that bad. He goes through a lot of examples in lecture that show u exactly how to do the problems. I would recommend not taking his discussion section which is usually the first one on monday just so u get a different perspective on the material. If u read the sections before lecture and do all the hw problems you'll do fine.
The material's dry and the professor makes the tests really hard.
The man is a sadist. Of all my professors last semester, he was the best at speaking English. Besides that, he was rather useless. Lectures were boring, homework was time-consuming, and exams were pretty difficult. Luckily for me, I had a helpful TA, but for the most part, I survived the class by having a study group.
the class itself is very valuable but hard for 3 credits - i highly recommend doin a lot of problems cause thats the only way you'll learn and do well on the tests.. witt is an above average teacher - hes poised and very organized. when he talks its almost like hes reading a book, youll see what i mean.. the tests are pretty hard - long problems
The class was challenging, but I learned a lot. Professor Witt is happy to help with your problems and very knowledgeable. Overall, if you put in the effort, you will get a good grade.
Very hard tests, but he curves them. Wonderful instruction - clear, to the point, with plentiful examples. Answers questions well.
Lectures were less useless at the beginning and increasingly more so as the semester wore on. Unless you already know the material, you won't have a very good time in this class. Some aspects are made CONSIDERABLY easier if you know multidimensional calculus; otherwise it's a nightmare. I found the book, lectures, and notes to be not useful.
He overly complicated problems, i was much better off getting help from elsewhere
Witt is a genius. Works through very useful examples. Homework is very hard but you will learn a lot from it. Somewhat intimidating when approached for help. Complete math 222 before taking the class (not just concurrently enrolled). Difficult but you will learn a lot. Supplementary Instruction is very helpful if you're struggling.
extreme perfectionist. will write out what he says verbatim and fix any little spelling error, then adjust the overhead. Exams are BS, uses springs and tilted axes which we never practice. Lectures are helpful, but exams are harder than he presents
One of the easiest classes I have ever taken. It's simple, the sum of all forces is equal to zero. It's not a difficult concept. If you know anything about geometry and how to do algebra, you will get an A. Every person who writes bad about him is just angry that they didn't do anything in high school and thought they were smart.
He's a good guy, but his exams were downright ridiculous. I learned a lot, but the exams were unnecessarily hard. Be prepared to do more than 3 credits of work.
Overall he is an awesome professor. Explains things extremely well although at times a bit fast. Exams are tough and sometimes a little ridiculous, but if you study a lot the curve will help you. He clearly knows what he is doing and wants the best for his students.
This man is the king of Matlab! He once asked me what the main course of a chicken dinner is. Yes, if you were in that class you now know who I am but seriously this guy needs a yellow smiley face so yeah, he rocks. Freshmen, quit complaining you have no idea how hilarious it is that you guys suffer.
It is a hard class. he is an ok guy but he makes very hard exams. His goal is to get the class average to be a 60 or lower. that is why i hated that class is because even if you know that material he would put problems you have never seem before on the exam.
I had a happy life until I took this class.
Professor Witt is an excellant teacher. The problem that I ran into, as well as many others, is that his exams are extremely difficult. If you go to office hours and study plenty you should do fine. Funny enough, I did better in dynamics that statics.
Took EMA 201 and loved it - EASY. Then I took EMA 202 and he turned into a completely different person. I would enter exams confident that I knew everything in the book, only to be shattered by problems designed to trip up even the best-prepared student. He explains things well and gives relevant homework problems, but the 202 exams are beasts.
Witt is smart and knows how to teach.
Witt knows his stuff, and I found the lectures to be helpful - very clear and concise, plenty of examples. People complain about how hard the class was, but if you just take problems one step at a time and think about it, it boils down to a few simple concepts. Don't blame him if you do poorly in the class, he teaches you everything you need.
Witt is a decently nice guy. His dynamics class is very tough. The problem is, that he graduated from MIT and is too smart to understand why you don't understand something. You may know your homework problems and in class examples inside out-but that won't help you on the exam, because he is guaranteed to give you something you've never seen before
Witt is a great professor when it comes to instruction. He does plenty of examples and is clear about his methods. Unfortunately, his exams are tough. They are not loaded, but limited to difficult material. Smart guy, translates it to his exams.
Witt's an okay teacher his exam are super hard but if you study hard the curve should help you. Online quizzes suck only because the time limit is ridiculous. If you don't understand what's going on his office hours will be super helpful.
Very smart man, and he will let you know, Uses even vocabulary that is confusing. Tough class - do the homework. Exams are the hardest exams I have ever taken, but are curved decently. I would suggest to enroll in Supplemental Instructing
This is a computer lab class with what might as well be no professor teaching it. It is a teach yourself class in which you read horribly complicated word documents that describe what may or may not be related to the MATLAB code you have to write for homework. Homeworks take about 8+ hours each time (75% of grade) and are ridiculous!
The guy is SOOO smart, which is evident through his proofs. By the end of them you don't even remember what it was about. Overall not that bad of a teacher but definitely over complicates some things. As many have said, be prepared to do more than 3 credits worth of work.
Ridiculous! It's 3 credits but spent more time on it than my 5 credit class. Homework extremely hard and takes 6-9 hours each week and only worth 10% of grade. Exams count for most of the grade and are really hard. Class graded on a bell curve with BC being average. I worked so hard and only got a B. Examples are not helpful and lectures are boring
Really hard exams, my test scores got worse and worse. But I do feel I learned a lot. He's really smart and pretty clear when teaching. But most of the stuff he teaches at lectures are not presented on the test. If you do the hw by yourself and put efforts into this class, it's possible to get good grade. But it's just really hard!
He definitely knows what he's talking about, but this class was still very hard. It isn't all his fault considering the subject matter, but his exams were ridiculously hard. The homework was also extremely difficult and took over 5 hours a week for 10% of the grade. But realistically, if you go to class, do your homework, and study, you'll be fine.
Hard class, and exams can be very tricky. However, he goes through plenty of examples in lecture, and if you understand all of the small things that can reduce your work for a problem, you will do fine. The best way to study is just to do many different kinds of problems, he will give you exam questions that require using multiple methods to solve
Difficult class. Explains the concepts well in class, but the homework would be unsolvable if it weren't online and answers given. Exams are also very difficult. Go to discussion; you learn more in there than in lecture.
Definitely not easy, but doable. Smart guy, decent lecturer -- pay attention, understand the problems and you will be just fine. Exams...hard. He'll always throw you a curveball. But the class is curved, so no worries.
Robert Witt is tough. Exams average 50%, and he likes that! he uses the document Cameras which I found hard to take notes with. He also likes power point, but those are often incomplete without the in class notes. I would take the SI course with this as it will give more notes and round out the instruction.
Homework is nearly unsolvable, extremely boring lectures that skip over essential basic ideas
Lecture notes only get you so far on the homework, and a bad TA makes it harder. Two midterms, two projects per semester. Studying in groups helps a lot.
I thought he was about as clear as you can be with the subject matter. the homework is hard, but if you put in the time, you'll do well on the exams; after the curve of course. Loved him as a teacher, hated him as a professor.
Definitely one of the hardest classes ever. Brilliant man but does not teach very well. Makes tests extremely difficult and the curve is unfriendly. You just need to survive in this class. Dynamics is much better.
Some of the hws are hard, but Witt is pretty good in office hours.
Witt has a PhD in nuclear engineering from MIT. So yea, he's way to smart to teach a class to a bunch of freshman/sophomores. He doesn't present the information in a way that allows his students to follow. TA's or SI instructures are much better teachers. Witt is willing to help you out in office hours though. Not that hard of a class otherwise
Great Prof. Explained things very well and made a hard subject matter easy. The concepts here are definitely hard but this teacher made the class easy.
If he doesn't make the tests impossible, then the only way to get an A is to get 100's on everything. You can do really well and still get a B. It's ridiculous.
His lectures were clear and concise, yet painfully boring and difficult to retain. I didn't gain much by going to them, although I attended regularly in the hopes that it would help. LOTS of outside help was necessary to survive this class. Homework takes about 8-10 hours/week if done correctly.
Easy class. Homework only took about 6-8 hours/week to complete.
A great professor who keeps his lectures interesting to students who actually care about the topic. Homework is fair, as are exams.
The homeworks are time consuming and tough but he is a helpful professor, so it helps a lot.
exams were fine but the final was hard. scales the average too low. Lectures are too in depth
Professor Witt is a tough-love sort of guy. he takes no time for anyone not willing to put the time in, which is fair. If you ask for help, he will definitely explain things clearly (even though he may seem annoyed if you don't get it right away). His exams are very difficult, so definitely study far more than you think you need to
lectures are online videos that will put you to sleep. Actual lectures are work time to do the homework problems. No one helps you with questions unless you go to tutoring and no one actually teaches you. The class is all self taught and the tests are incredibly hard with no relation to homework or readings.
Hardest class I have taken so far. Make sure to sign up for the SI offered along with this class. Our second midterm had an "average" of 16 out of 30. Only three questions. Here is the crazy part, our average is not a great average. Instead of a very sharp spike, it was a gradual hump. The most scores received were 13. Many people got 6 through 22
This class this semester was a joke. It was "flipped" which means we don't have lecture during lecture. You have to watch really dry and boring lecture videos during your own time. Very hard to do for all of them. The labs are extermely pointless for the most part. Worst class from the stand point of being excited to the end result. Disappointed.
He makes us learn the material via watching lecture videos outside of class, and turns class into work time. That might sound nice, but 50 minutes is not enough to get a good chunk of homework done. 010 would not recommend.
Great Instructor, but Exams are tough and so is grading.
If You take his class make sure that the format is normal. I took the flipped class and it has been the most work I have ever put in with least reward. Exams are long and difficult, homework is for the most part pointless, discussion is laughable and the monotonic videos are almost as useless as going to his lecture where we do homework.
I felt like learning the material was much more difficult in the flipped lecture format. It was difficult to get a substantial amount of homework done during class, and this made it easy to fall behind in watching the lecture videos outside of class. Neither the online homework nor the discussions were very helpful in preparing for the exams.
The flipped class was a joke, we played children's games and did crosswords in discussion. The online video lectures were brutally boring and you will inevitably get behind on them. The hw was hard but worth it. Don't be perturbed by his condescending attitude during office hours, if you ask he can help explain concepts. Do find a good study group!
The idea of "flipping" the classroom was a joke. It didn't work well. Make friends that you can work on homework together and take Supplemental Instruction (SI) if you can. I learned more from SI and reading the book than I did from the online video lectures. The discussions are useless, but you have to go because there is a graded quiz every week.
Very hard Class, and prof makes it harder as it is more of an online and independent learning class. prof does not teach in this class, discussion is useless and so is lecture, read the book and then only you will pass
Yes, this classroom was flipped, and if that is not your thing, this class will be very difficult. However, if you are fine as an independent learner and do your homework before class, the prof will personally help you on the hw problems and does a great job at explaining. Plus, the videos are great review before exams. Exams get harder over time.
The class is flipped so you learn by yourself outside of class and do homework in class. You are suppose to be able to learn from online videos made by the professor but they aren't much help. The lectures are useless since there is no teaching. SI is the only way to really learn anything.
Professor Witt uses the flipped class agenda. His online lectures are awfully boring and confusing. He likes to use jargon in his online lectures which makes the material even more dense; they are very uninspiring.
Even if you're an independent learner, the flipped class doesn't work. In video he loves to skip parts, do things a more complex way than necessary, and doesn't explain things well. His tests are hardly on what he has in the videos or homework. Yes you get partial credit, but unless you have his work you'll be lucky to get anything. HUGE workload.
You have to learn literally everything on your own. Online lectures suck and are painfully boring and long. The homework is ridiculous and can easily take up to 10 hours per assignment, assuming you can figure out how to do the problems. Tests are a bit easier than homework, but are very harshly graded. Average grades on exams are around 50%
Flipped classroom means lots of lecture videos... dry lecture videos. Buy the book and read if you don't want to deal with them. The videos are not easy to swallow like Kahn Academy. Homework is tedious and difficult, but will really teach you the material.
I found that Prof Witt was not helpful at all. The flipped method did not work at all and I found it extremely difficult in a class that I find very interesting. He made me dislike subject matter that I loved and the tests are very difficult and the homework takes much longer than it should.
Great teacher. Good at answering questions if you ask them specifically. Lenient grader as instead of grading only your report, he will look through your finite element model to see where you went wrong and what you did correctly to give you credit. Lectures are very optional, you can learn from the PDF's on moodle. Also he makes some decent jokes.
The flipped classroom just doesn't make sense at all! The concepts are not very difficult, but the teaching method make them extremely hard.
Flipped class structure is awful to say the least. You basically need to teach yourself the class. Discussions are required, but are completely pointless.
This class is challenging, even though the material itself is simple. Witt writes hard tests, but he's willing to give good help if you ask for it. The video lectures aren't that great. They give you a chance to pause and think stuff over, but they're straight out of the book and very dry. This class is an exercise in focus and time-management.
A lot of criticism from 201 students, but I found Witt to be excellent in this course. He was very patient and interactive with the students, kept lectures (demos) interesting, and interacted with students more as a peer than a superior. Always gave feedback on HW and exams, but often seemed overly disappointed in the results. Lenient grader though
Flipped style is horrible and the video lectures are not useful at all. Learned all my material from book, homework problems, practice problems, and tutoring. Even though I attended all discussions and lectures, aced the homework, and thought I knew the material, I still received a horrid grade. Whenever I asked Witt questions, he was not helpful.
Took Dynamics online with him. I feel Witt is more geared towards grad students. He can seem intimidating to talk to but if you do talk to him a few times he really opens up. Very hard exams, expects a lot which is not a bad thing. It only sucks if you really struggle with large amounts of memory with no notes or help. I like him but glad I am done
The class material is hard and if you don't use the flipped lecture correctly, it will seem completely pointless. With that said, if you actually do the examples in the video lectures before he shows you the answer, it is extremely beneficial! Go to lecture and ask questions when you don't understand. He's extremely intelligent.
Bob is the epitome of tough love. He isn't going to make the class easy on you, but by the time you get through it, you'll know what you're doing. The sort of person who thinks knowing the material is more important than the grade you're getting. Will give you help when you ask for it, but can make you feel like you should already know it.
Worst teacher ever! Flipped classroom setting. Horrendous online lectures which literally induced sleep upon watching. Clarity was not present.
Professor Witt is the bomb. He is super funny and really wants you to understand the material. He gives really good feedback on your homework so you know what you did wrong. I would recommend going to his office hours, he will help you out.
Terrible teacher, expects way too much from students. First day of class demeans students into choosing another major. Very negative and talks down to students. TA's are also horrible. Had one of the TAs laugh at me when I asked a question, said I should know how to do the material.
Really smart guy, you'll learn a lot more in lecture than you will from reading any book
Witt really isn't that bad. He expects a lot from you, but if you are willing to put in the effort he really is a good teacher. He takes his job very seriously so he hardly ever comes across as approachable. The main vibe you pick up is that he doesn't like "dumb" people that don't ask questions. So if you don't understand something, just ask.
Lecture's are very dry and I didn't learn much from them - I relied on outside sources/materials to survive this class. Witt is helpful in his office hours though, and gives a fair workload for the course. It's hard to distinguish between boring lectures and boring topics...
He gives hard tests but as long as you show up to class and try the practice problems you should be fine, also PrEPs is your best friend
Witt is an awesome professor, his tests are hard but not impossible, and the grading is fair. He is really helpful with the homework, which is crucial to understanding the course. Would definitely take again
He is a great professor in that he makes it clear what he expects from you on tests. He also makes his class so that tests are not worth the entire grade which is nice.
Witt teaches a tough class, but don't hold that against him. A lot of work is expected of you for just three credits. He can come across as intimidating, but outside of class he's kind, and willing to help. The class is hard, but never unfair. My advice is to do as many practice problems as you can, and try to not fall behind on lecture videos.
Prof Witt is really great professor. I had him for Statics - really hard class - and he made it very manageable. It's a lot of work and the material takes time and effort to grasp, but Witt does a really good job of making the material understandable. I went to all the lectures and I'm very happy I did. He also uses online lectures that are nice.
GO TO THE STUDY TABLES. TA and Robert are very nice and are there to help you with homework. Get help if you are falling behind. Only way to learn anything in this class is to practice!! Can't cram for any tests here. Start the H.W. a few days before, i've pulled several all-nighters before. They give a lot of generous partial credit on exams.
His "flipped classroom" structure was very difficult for me. The video lectures were very dry and boring and did not help at all! Also the TAs and the professor are not helpful and will not answer your questions unless you know what you are doing. Overall this class is very discouraging towards prospective engineering students.
BEST professor I have had. I was terrified coming into this class but Witt really makes the material easy to grasp. His videos, although boring, are very helpful. You can rewind and re-watch until you understand! Lectures were super helpful too! Witt really cares about you learning the materialso don't be afraid to ask -- he's actually REALLY nice!
Witt may come across as intimidating or brittle, but he's a very nice person who cares about the learning of his students. His teaching is straightforward and to the point; he teaches you what you need to know in a very efficient and effective way. Classes are spent working on practice problems, the new info is given through videos he made online.
Professor Witt is great at answering questions. Although the content may be tricky to grasp right away, Professor Witt's approach to problem solving is easy to follow and if you come prepared to lecture, his lectures are extremely beneficial. Difficult exams, but they are heavily curved. I highly recommend this professor.
Had Witt for both Statics and Dynamics and I can honestly say that he is not as bad as everyone puts him although he does have high expectations. He likes to write "juicy problems" on his exams but the way to do well is to go to his study table to work on hw (most efficient way learn the concepts also) and enroll in PrEPS. Lots of practice is key.
Hard professor for an already hard class. Amount of homework given is manageable, but it is graded solely on correctness and not on completion. He is a tough grader on both homework and exams, but he is fair in doing it. Read the textbook or go to office hours if you don't understand something; don't fall behind.
Professor Witt is a great professor and genuinely cares bout his students learning. However, his exams are ridiculously hard. Tough course with a great professor. Would not recommend the course but would highly recommend Witt.
