Was a pretty good proffesor but the material was rediculously hard. There was a good curve though.
Funny side comments. Interesting demos. You don't need the workbook!
His whole lecture is proving formulas and stuff like that. He never shows examples. His test averages are usualy in the 50's but he curves so as long as you can beat the average you'll do fine.
Hilarious British guy. Makes a lot of jokes about stupid pop culture. Obviously knows his stuff, but lectures the derivations. Lecture attendance was not necessary if you like learning from a book. I didn't so i went lecture and then didn't use the book. Quizzes and HW are worth 10% each and are done and handed in at discussion. Tests are rea
This guys funny, but when he's not telling jokes lecture seems like it goes on forever. His in class demonstrations are enjoyable but the material is tough, the curve is amazing though because everyone does bad on the tests, also the final was all old test questions so it was really easy. Overall an ok class.
Good prof. Required discussions. I rarely went to class but I still did well.
Horrible professor. He teaches as if we already know the material. He doesn't provide enough examples to complete his extremely difficult homework assignments. He also encourages students to drop his class if they aren't understanding the material rather than seek help from him or someone else. His jokes aren't even funny, they're dated.
Very easy, tests straight from the easy weekly quiz's. Moderately funny, simple if u took it in HS
Challenging and strict prof and throws a lot at you, but you learn a lot in the process. Exams can be a bit long. Very funny and nice, encourages students to come to his office hours. Goes a bit fast though. Don't skip his class -- He writes a lot of stuff on the chalkboard that you may not catch in the books or powerpoint. Great class overall.
I enjoyed this professor so much I am taking the Next semester of the class under his instruction.
Very thorough in his quest to teach you physics. Everything is explained clearly. Due to the volume of material packed into course, attendance and reading the book is a must. Funny, but his humor is not understood by majority of class.
If you study the tests are very easy although they consist of very little actual physics questions. I mostly read in discussion and play on my laptop in lecture. He's pretty funny as well.
Dr Wood is a funny guy. He is interesting, but YOU NEED TO GO TO DISCUSSION! I couldn't understand my TA and my grade suffered because of it. His tests are easy as long as you study and do the discussion worksheets. There is almost no math used (a plus or a minus). I like Dr. Wood and I would recommend him as a professor.
Very good teacher, but the class is not designed for a slacker. The test is very hard even when you study - MUST know fundamentals to have a chance. I don't know one person who got an A on any of the three tests. I kind of Hail Mary'd the weekly quiz when it was a hard topic and I did okay. You don't get your tests back to study!>:( HW done in Disc
This is not an easy A class, but don't be afraid! If you are willing to put in the effort, Dr. Wood will do his best to help you understand the material. Lectures are good, with a fair dose of his British humor and pop culture references. Make sure you go to every class & discussion.
I dont think he is a very good professor at all he gives our weekly packets that are anywhere from 6-10 pages long, only teaches about a third of the packet then leaves the rest to figure it out since its not in the book or in the notes. Oh and only grades 2 questions from that. Thats bull. Tests are ridiculous.
Very, very hard teacher. Long and difficult assignments. Does not follow the book, so it is of little help. His lectures are basically an information dump. It is up to you to apply your prior knowledge and sort it out. Regular attendance is a must if you want to do well. Only saving grace: his exams were not as bad as the homework.
not bad. he seemed to make sure to teach a lesson in different ways so as to appeal to different learning styles. his little experiments helped me a bunch. yes, you should go to class because he'll get bitter about the low attendance rate and ask questions based on lectures. the exams are relatively easy, not so much the weekly quizzes. he's funny?
Great, british accent, pronounces some words funny. class was super easy. just go to lecture, and if you're not stupid, that's all it takes. exams, and quizes were super simple
My favourite Professor! He is funny and really passionate about physics. He wants you to learn and do well. I would have done bad without attending lecture, discussion and taking good notes. His homework assignments are long, however he does similar questions most of the time on the bard during lecture or similar ones are done in discussion.
dont take him. Too smart for his own good, doesnt teach anything. Only derives equations all day and doesnt show u how to use them so come test time the class average is about 40%
He likes to ramble with big words. Most of his lecture is spent talking to himself because you can't understand his point. I have yet to find a person who ever had followed him through a proof. Also his class didn't know who the discussion teachers were going to be till the first day of class so they got who ever they could. Overall horrible. T
Of all the science/matha courses nearly 40 credits I've taken at U off Iowa and UWM, Wood is by far the best lecturer. I didnt skip one class because I didn't want to miss the entertainment. Discussion sections were worthless due to inept TA's. Wood can act like an arrogant jerk in the "lecture theatre" but cordial and helpful in office hours.
He really knows the subject well and his lectures are some of the best I had at UWM. One of the only teachers that still do experiments during lectures. However, the assignments and the tests can be quite challenging. But despite this I would recommend this teacher to anyone taking the 209 and 210 sequence, you will learn a lot.
Let's just say, dont take his class. His homework assignments are incredibly long and pointless since he only corrects 2-3 problems out of the 40 you do.
He doesnt help at all with office hours. Ive been trying to get an appointment and he outed me in class. I am very disappointed because I actually want to learn... But when you say that people that are grasping it dont deserve to be in the class he can f-off. Other then that he is pretty funny when he doesnt attack you in front of a lecture hall
WWWAAYYYYY to hard, drop it, drop it, drop it! Physics is an awful subject anyways. He is to intelligent for his own good.
doesnt teach whats on tests, quizzes, or homework... the book isn't detailed enough to help significantly either. Too fast paced and he wastes way too much time in class
This was the most well-organized class I've taken at UWM. With five meetings, two quizzes and one homework assignment per week, you're kept busy. Wood's lectures are admirably precise, although they can be hard to follow if you fall behind. Average exam scores tended to be low (<50%), but then this is UWM. I wish Wood were teaching PHY-210 as well.
Dr. Wood is amazing. His lectures are funny and you really learn from him. I don't use the book, I find his lectures are usually clearer. His class is challenging, but only because he expects you to actually learn and not just memorize problems/set ups. I think most UWM students have a problem with that, they want a good grade just handed to them.
Plus, his accent is so sexy. Why has no one mentioned this??? Professor Wood is by far the best professor I have ever had. If you could take every single class from him ever, you might have low self esteem from seeing such low percentages, but you would be the smartest person in the world probably. Plus, he really cares about each of his students.
AWESOME Professor! Wont be receiving an A but who cares! (Calc based) Physics is a difficult subject! I have taken this same course at two different colleges, Professor Wood's way of teaching, night-day difference! Actually makes physics understandable and how it can/will be applied in life/work. His sense of humor is a PLUS! Highly Recommend!
Very knowledgeable and effective lecturer. Did an excellent job of the Mickey Mouse-level material despite his clearly higher understanding of physics. Has no tolerance for students who want to sit right in front of him and use their smartphones for the whole class - fine by me, it bothers me too!
This class can be overwhelming if you have never had a physics class before. If you have, it will still require lots of time but getting a good grade is possible. Wood is a good professor and makes lectures fun with his sense of humor and in class demonstrations. His test average is usually around 50% but he curves heavily.
Homework and tests are the hardest you'll ever have, don't be surprised if you get a 70% and that is the highest grade in the class. Awesome prof, and teaches you the theory and intricacies instead of the mechanics of the work.
I don't think this class is that difficult, but I think his grading methods are unfair. The average hw is 12-14 questions, and he only grades 2. Hypothetically, if you did not do 2 problems on each hw, you could get ~80%. However, with his grading system it would be possible to get a 0 on each assignment. Don't take him
Excellent prof with a dry sense of humor. Keeps the class engaged with jokes in lecture. Homework is difficult- expect to do a lengthy hw packet every week, only to have two questions graded each time. Put in the effort, and the class is not terrible. An A is definitely achievable. Overall a very knowledgeable professor!
He is very knowledgable about the material, but goes out of his way to make it more difficult with crazy examples and complicated notation. Also, he has a god complex, and emits a very snobbish attitude at times. Not for the faint of heart.
Dr. Wood is a very knowledgeable and helpful prof. The exams are NOT as difficult as everyone makes them out to be IF you just study the homework and examples, online quizzes, and just attend the lecture and ask questions. Unfortunately, the textbook is rather useless due to poor notation and examples. Use University Physics by Young and Freedman.
Professor is nice, has an accent but sort of jumps around from topic to topic. If you don't have a science brain, it's not easy. 3 quizzes a week and 3 exams. Quizzes are hard if you don't do the assigned reading. GO TO CLASS.
Wood is by far the worst Professor in the Physics department. There are two types of pain: one that makes us stronger, and useless pain. The pain you will experience in an upper level course with Wood is the latter. The homework are ambiguous, and he will refuse to explain the questions. The answers to the questions he will provide are often wrong.
The class itself is pretty easy as long as you pay attention to the powerpoints, take the quizzes, and do the assignments. Personally I found his speaking voice very dull so I had to really try to pay attention, but he is very smart.
3 Online quizzes per week, 3 exams. Fast talker, somewhat funny, god complex, will not answer questions, will not entertain jokes from students. Not a friendly guy, full of himself, made this easy class much harder. Does not teach what is on the exams.
Dr. Wood is careful to explain his expectations at the beginning of a semester, and you'd better pay attention. He is demanding, but should be respected for it. If you put the effort in and get a letter of recommendation from him for a research program, it is worth a lot.
Mr. Wood is a smart professor but from my prespective he uses my way training. His attempt of humor is dry but he does bring examples. Human Theory and learning styles call his approach dictorial. High work, quiz volumes, and little time in class for questions. Of 100+ teachers, a C. Better in semester than summer term as volumes are intense.
I thought he was pretty funny. He really wants you to understand whats going on. Although I think he is too smart to teach this class. If you get a 50 percent in the class expect to get a B-. The classes expectations are much higher than what the average student is able to comprehend.
Did his PhD at Oxford and expects similar standards. But you know what, you actually learn PHYSICS! The homeworks may be a bit long and the tests are really hard (average is like 50). His class has helped me become a better engineer. Thats I am also taking Physics 210 with him. Use his office hours!
Over complicated most things in lecture. Likes to focus on proofs and calculus even when it is not necessary. Also can be somewhat disrespectful to students during lectures. His attitude most days can be described as grouchy. Likes to assign heavy homework work loads weekly. Only upside is he does all scantron tests.
Lectures were not very helpful as he seemed to ramble the entire time about deriving equation and theory which did not help with homework, quizzes or exams. The quizzes were ok but have very little to do with exams. The TA was awful and a waste of time. The TA basically wrote out how to do the problem and that was it. Class needs serious revision.
Lectures seem to drag on forever; I found myself frequently zoning out about 20 minutes into each lecture. Quizzes are difficult, but at least you get two attempts at them to fix your mistakes for a higher grade. As for the exams: good luck on them, you'll need it. Decent curve. Got an average of 76% on the exams, got a B+ in the class.
He's kinda funny but his jokes tend to repeat throughout the semester. Seems to have an ego and is not approachable. If you have questions he will answer them, but make sure you've checked the syllabus first. He's very clear in lecture but tends to go on about calculus and derivation Relatively difficult but curves enough that the class is easy
A lot of homework, a packet a week, sometimes two, then quizzes twice a week. if you're nifty chegg is a good friend. tests are very difficult but the curve is really good in the class, ended with a C but had 100's on homework and quiz averages. average of second and third tests were around a 48% which curves to a C+, He's very smart, use it.
Not the best, but not the worst professor. Lectures have very little to do with textbook or course content. He is very knowledgeable in his field, but overall not a very effective teacher. He would be far better in smaller discussions than lectures. Other than the 4pts for attending, the lectures felt very pointless to the course.
Very smart teacher, but lectures like a lot of these comments had nothing to do with the book. Found my self zoning out the first 15 mins of lecture.. exams could be easy if you put in the time. very tough course in my opinion
The professor was best to his subject, and clearly understandable. The only thing found to be not understandable was homework system. Tuition already is hard to pay, and on top of that, additional online system was compulsory that was quite hard to manage for me. But it was helpful to study.
Easy class, prof is easy to understand. Really morbid and dark sense of humor, very entertaining lecturer. All around cool guy.
He's very intelligent and therefore goes through concepts too quickly without elaborating enough or making things clear. Spends too much time in lecture rambling on about useless things and not enough time stressing the important concepts. He is very intimidating. I found this class to be extremely difficult.
He is very helpful if you ask for it but I do not understand a single word he says in lecture, since I am in an engineering mindset not seeing alot of things applied and watching him explain things theoretically is hard.. Needless to say we have 2 hwks a week and 2 quizzes a week!TOO much work!! If you work VERY hard though you will pass.
Pro: He is a really smart man Con: He is not a great lecturer, is VERY theoretical in his explanations and is not very receptive to questions. Assigns a lot of homework and has extremely hard tests. Pros: He has a British accent Cons: He is too old and snarky to be cute. If you can get Chang instead, do it.
Pretty difficult class even though it didn't have to be. Imperative that you do the weekly quizzes and assignments. Only two tests, and neither are curved. Textbook doesn't really help. Professor Wood is incredibly intelligent, but not very approachable. Can be cynical and intolerant towards students. One on one is a bit better, but not much.
I took the summer semester of PHY209 with pr. Wood - Class was made unnecessarily difficult. Lectures are entirely theory - no application. Homework and quizzes are DAILY, and there aren't many resources to study for exams. First test class average was 75%, second was 59%. Phrasing of questions is confusing, and the test problems are challenging.
I do think a lot of these positive reviews may be from Professor Wood himself, he is a decent lecturer, but this class is brutal. Daily alternating quizzes and HW- the workload is heavy, no practice tests. He has a habit of dismissively explaining complicated multi-step problems by insisting "this is Easy," and does not solicit questions
His lectures may be fast, but they cover the material wonderfully within the given time. Solely paying attention to lectures won't teach you physics; you learn physics by DOING physics. All the homework we have is intended to consolidate concepts and let us know where there are inconsistencies in our knowledge. Memorizing formulas isn't enough.
Professor wood will break down your expectations of what a good grade is, break down your expectations of what a reasonable amount of homework is, break down what you thought you knew previously, and break down your spirit - he will then build you up again into a true physicist. Hardest classes I've ever taken, best classes I have ever taken.
I am not a slacker. I read, highlight, AND take notes from the textbook. I do the homework, and I take the quizzes. I have gone to his office hours 5 times; yet to miss a single lecture and have taken Physics in the past (received an A). I'd like to think I am not awful at it. Yet I feel like I'm drowning in his quizzes and theory-based lectures
The lectures are entirely theory, but recently he's started to do problems in class. If you don't attend lecture and read the assigned sections, YOU WILL FAIL. If you haven't used office hours before, now is the time to start. He's definitely one of the hardest professors here, but if you work for it you will get a good grade and learn something.
Dr. Wood cares very much about physics, and wants his students to come away with the best understanding of the subject possible, but his style and the material makes this a hard class. Attend all the lectures and study for the exams by doing all the homeworks and quizzes over again. Review or learn basic calculus, vectors, and partial derivatives.
You'll learn a lot in Prof. Wood's class, but he expects a lot from his students. Make sure you can devote enough time to this course and you should do well. You'll need a good grasp of calculus, especially coordinate systems and vectors.
He has unrealistic expectations for a Gen-Ed course. It seems he expects us all to be physics majors who are naturals at electromagnetics. The four exams in the class comprise 70% of your grade, and each has had 15 multiple-choice questions. This means every question you get wrong you lose more than a percent in your final grade. -Junior w/3.96 GPA
He did have hands out available in D2L, you will have to attend the classes to be able to get the answer, the quizzes and test are all based on the hand out posted on D2L, If you don't understand what he talking about in the class (one time shot), you will not pass. Going to office hour did not help much unless you have specific questions.
This course is hard, but then again so is the subject. He is very theoretical, so you have to listen carefully and watching lecture videos outside of class helps. Lots of homework and quizzes, but it is beneficial because the more practice, the better you understand. Underrated professor.
Dr. Wood is very funny and intelligent, but this was honestly one of the hardest classes I have taken. He would assign 4+ online homework assignments a week, his lectures were difficult to follow and very disjointed from the textbook/homework assignments, and his exams were very hard.
Wood seems like he doesn't want to teach: he's often condescending to students who dare ask questions even though his lectures are so monotonous and hard to follow. Each exam question is worth about 1% of your whole grade-even with a curve this is kind of outrageous. Only did well due to a great TA and online resources from other college websites
Don't be fooled by the British accent, he's a jerk. If you've had Sorenson for Chem, it's him, but worse. He forces attendance with sign in sheets & his lectures are the most boring thing you'll ever experience. 2 online hw's & 2 online quizzes per week. You'll probably need chegg. Avg exam score: 60%. Usually hefty curve at the end though.
It's so surprising how much more he knows than the textbook, he also tries to teach you the most difficult of proofs and examples even though they are not on the exams. There is no exam reviews, and the homework is never explained.
If you want to pass this class study using the multiple choice questions in his lecture handouts, sample exams, and online quizzes. Sometimes questions come directly from there and sometimes the don't! But studying those will give you the right idea of what the right answer should look like. There is a pretty generous curve at the end.
I never had a worse professor in my life. He has lost all motivation and passion for the subject (if he had any to start with). In lectures, he rants and talks irrelevant derivation. Monotone, boring, and read off the PPT lectures. The first time that a prof can make me HATE a subject. I'm baffled that someone like him still somehow maintain a job.
Hard to follow lecture, TONS of hw/quizzes, seems disinterested. Teaches as if we already have an understanding of physics, as if we have natural physics logic built in us? Sometimes came off condescending. He could be great if he wanted to be, but it seems like 209 isn't worth his time. He can be accommodating depending on circumstance
Never hated a class more in my life. Lectures are hard to understand, reading the book helps way more- lectures r useless. So many quizzes/homeworks barely count towards your grade. If you bomb ONE test, say bye to your grade. He's so condescending, rude, shouts for no reason at random points throughout the lecture. HOW DOES HE STILL HAVE A JOB.
Lectures are very dry. 4 quizzes and hw assignments per week for the 8 week summer term. Test questions are usually recycled from quizzes and the weekly worksheets, and are multiple choice. The 3 tests constitute the majority of the final grade despite the volume of homework and quizzes, though 4 of each get dropped and there is a curve at the end.
One of the best professors ive ever had, even online. cares a lot about his job and making sure his students have access to multiple forms of learning (powerpoints, video lectures, textbook powerpoints). it is a lot of work but he is a very fair and caring grader. 10/10 would recommend
Honestly, not that bad when online. There were 4 web-assigns a week and 4 lecture quizzes. The lecture videos were difficult to understand what he was saying and sometimes confusing. It was more beneficial to read the textbook and chapter powerpoints. However, if you can understand the lecture & discussion questions, the exams are straight forward.
Dr. Wood is a well respected man and he has such a high understanding of Physics that he can't always explain things in undergraduate terms. He does a very good job and walking you through the examples and those are where he gets his test questions from. The proof of a topic is so that you can see where the idea is coming from not to recreate them.
Final exam was the most difficult. Nothing like anything he taught or tested us on before
