Very easy grader, cancels class often.
very helpful and fair
easy, but yawn
she's great! spent all class talking a/b what was happening next class and so on
A little crazy, but Very nice and Very helpful. Speeches Easy, Tests hard
She's awesome!! always willing to help, and she's really nice and easy!
very reasonable, helpful, lets you resubmit work- get her if you can!
Wonderful teacher. Very helpful. Easy to do well in the class by resubmitting work. 3 speeches, NO tests. Great class, take it!
Class was a joke, I got an A- because I missed class THREE TIMES (and one was the Saturday make-up). I learned absolutely nothing in her class, but it was ridiculiously easy. BORING though, I would pass.
She lets you resubmit EVERYTHING except the actual presentation of your speech, so the class is extremely hard to fail! It can be ridiculously boring at times, but still easy to pass.
so easy but boring, lets you resubmit all of your work, no reason you can't get an a/b, takes attendance so go to class, very lenient! take her if you can
super nice. very helpful. a little boring at times. but one of the best you will find.
EASY A! lets you resubmit work till you get the grade you want. Sweet lady and one of the best comm. teachers here
She is awesome. Easy A. Lets you resubmit and lets you out of class early all the time. I did not want to do individual speeches but even if you utterly screw up she will give you a good grade. Take her if possible.
Take 122 because you don't have a midterm and its the easiest GCOM class. She's a great teacher, let's you resubmit so you can get full credit on everything. Definitely take her class for an A/B
She's a very nice lady. Class is extremely easy. She is always willing to help. Lets you resubmit everything written for full credit. Boring, but you actually get something out of it.
Take 122:less group work so u wont have to deal w/ that lazy group memeber all semester! NO TESTS 'cept the final (easy) & a few online quizzes. Resubmits everything except speeches. Never knew there was SO much to a speech but eh. TAKE HER! She's chilled
SHE ROCKS!!!!!!!
Bobbie is great. She really reminds me of my great aunt, who tries to get down to Earth. She talks about 'dissin'' people. Great lady, you can't fail her class (unless you don't go).
She is a great teacher. Very helpful and if you do what you are supposed to you will get an A or a B. Lots of extra credit opportunities. She's a very nice person! :)
Great teacher! :D Clear expectations and lectures, nice, helpful, great communicator, many extra credit opportunities, works with the students. Really enjoyed the class! Be warned, though, GCOM 122 isn't entirely without a group presentation :P
Take 121 with her! NO quizzes, the only tests are midterm and final, lets you resubmit everything, ONLY 2 presentations-one group and one individual, sweet hw policy, nice lady, but can be just a bit boring. EASINESS!!!
Nice lady and easy class - she makes it so if you do the work you can get an A. 2 presentations which aren't too bad. Lets you resubmit all written work for full credit. Only tests are midterm and final. Gives lots of extra credit possibilities.
be careful, this class is overrated! her grading scale is totally wierd as is her attendance policy, and there tons of little one point assignments to worry about every week. it's easy to get a good grade but its damn near impossible to get a great grade.
This class is pretty easy for a GCOM class. I opened my book maybe 4 times all semester. Out of 3 presentations we only got to choose the topic of 1. The others had really strict guidlines, so you end up doing a presentation on something boring.
nicest professor you'll have at jmu! she wants you to get an A. lots of extra credit. resubmit hw till you get a 100%. online quizzes, no tests, same gcom final for all classes.
shes a great teacher.. a little boring but shes so sweet. i got an A in there. its not hard at all. she gives a lot of projects but there all easy. you should take her class.
This lady has no idea what she's doing in justice studies and should go back to whatever department she came from. Her lectures vary between pure BS and by the seat of her pants mediocrity. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH MITCHELL, you'll find yourself behind those who took the other two professors.
Dr. Mitchell is a nice lady, but she's out of her league teaching intro to justice studies. I don't know what her background is, but it's clearly not politics or philosophy. Her lectures sound like she prepped for them by reading a Dummies Guide. She means well, but doesn't know what she's doing.
Great course to pad your GPA 'cause as long as you show up and act interested you'll do well, but if you feel like you should be learning something, RUN, don't walk, RUN AWAY! Real nice teacher, except she can't teach the subject, just repeats superficial stuff from the intros in the reader.
I can't agree more with what you said below. Run. And fast---that is if you desire to learn something from a competent professor. Class is a cakewalk, but for the first time in my life I was still unsatisfied with that.
nice lady, doesn't really have a set outline, just talks about random terms in the book. doesn't even cover everything. a few projects. not bad.
She is relatively easy, however, this is not just a "come to class and get your A" type of class. She wants her students to do well, however, you have to put the extra effort in for an A. Easy B, not so easy A.
Really really nice lady! Her class is easy if you do the quizzes and put effort into the few projects she assigns.
She's definitely the nicest sweetest teacher at JMU and really interested in you as a person. Too bad she really doesn't know the material she's been handed to teach about justice in philosophy and law. I left class feeling warm and fuzzy but somehow not quite sure I learned anything.
She is an amazing woman. She is very helpful if you just ask. She is brilliant and one of my favorite teachers at JMU!
this was my favorate class by far. She uses blackboard a lot. All assignments are passed in electronically. There is a discussion board assignment, and regular hw assignment due every week as well as 4 papers due throughout the semester. She posts all grades on blackboard. easy to contact. TAKE THE CLASS!!!
Wonderful and decent teacher
the class focused on social justice interventions through water, music, and immigration, really interesting, great professor, take her if you can
So I signed up for this class thinking that it would be an easy A. Throughout the semester the class seemed easy and I had a solid A going into the final. After studying 6 hours for the final I ended up getting an F. The class average for the final was also an F. With that said I ended up getting a B- in this stupid class and didn't learn a thing.
One of the Best teachers at JMU! I have never met a person as willing to help her students and explain unclear material. You have to put in the work, but she is always willing to help you if you just ask. Interesting discussions, interesting assignments... make sure you attend class regularly
This class is pretty awful. There are roleplays and weekly quizzes. The class itself isn't bad, it actually is pretty fun and you think you are doing well until the midterm. It's 40 questions from 6 chapters of extensive information. Class average was a D and she wouldn't curve. Her A is a 95% and she doesn't round up. GPA killer.
Attendance is mandatory, not too much reading (a few easy to read books-not textbooks), and essay/short answer tests. Loads of extra credit opportunities. Mitchell is extremely friendly and eager to help. the class focused on poverty, hurricane katrina, and latin American migration to the US in terms of social justice.
This class is hard or easy depending on how much work you put to put in. The papers are annoying but she is willing to help you on them so you can get a better grade. Also her tests are hard you need to keep up with all the readings and still study a minimum of 3 hours to do well on her tests. Offers alot of extra credit though
This class is a lot of work. Reading is necessary to get a good grade, and it's pretty fast paced. There are three papers that are annoying to complete, but not hard at all. Offers up to 10% (a whole letter grade!) of extra credit. She is very into her own subject and that ends up rubbing off on the students. Lots of movie clips as well.
SHE IS WONDERFUL!!! I absolutely looved her! So encouraging and really loves what she teaches! Has a way of really encouraging discussion. It is important to read the material in order to participate in class and get the most of the class. If you try, you will succeed!
She is fantastic! Cares about the students and is not harsh about grading, just follow criteria.
She's a great professor. Easy class and from what I've heard from other SCOM classes hers is definitely the easiest. 3 presentations. Quiz every week but open book. Don't have to buy the text book it's online. Midterm and final. Take her if you can!!!!
sweetest person ever. group project topics were confusing but she's a light grader so we got good grades on them always. Has weekly chapter quizzes which are super easy as long as you read, they are online & open book. Only hard things are the midterm and the final which is 100 questions and she didn't give much to help for it. Gives lots of extraC
She is such a sweet woman, light-grader and the class is really easy if you do what you need to do. The group projects are a little confusing but not hard at all. Also, there is a textbook but you don't need to buy anything she uploads what you need to read on canvas and the quizzes are all online.
In group SCOM the other students make or break the class, but Bobby is a really good prof. Grading criteria is vague but she's a really easy grader if you put in any effort. Weekly quizzes are due at 5pm, and you really don't have to show up much if you read the textbook, which she posts on Canvas. That said, her lectures are fun so I don't read
easiest A you'll ever recieve BUT also most boring class ever. did not show up for about 2 months and still recieved and A. quizzes every other week but open note and take it from home. Presentations are graded so leniently, the chances of getting below a B are slim
Bobby is a really sweet, organized and cooperative professor! There is a quiz just about every week, open note (easy), projects are fun if you have a good group (which I did!), and she is a VERY lenient grader. It is almost impossible not to get an A in the class. Textbook is provided on Canvas.
I loved Professor Mitchell. Honestly, I'm writing this because she was the most caring professor i've had so far, and as much as I did not like my group in 123, she made it so much better. Some quizzes weekly, but other than that it's just presentation. If you take her class and do not enjoy it, she would find a way to make it better.
She is a fine professor, but in class isn't the most interesting thing in the world so most of the people in my class didn't show up half the time. There are open-note quizzes every week based on the material that is going to be on the midterm and final, which were difficult if you don't study a lot. I studied for 2 hours and got a C on the midterm
This woman is so sweet and just wants you to do well. While attendance is 'mandatory' you aren't being graded on attendance its just because you will sometimes do in class activities. This course is super easy its just 2 group projects that you have ample time to get done in class. 10/10 would recommend!!
Professor Mitchell was very good at preparing us for the SCOM final. She was likeable and although sometimes we'd focus on one concept for a little too long, the semester never felt rushed. I highly recommend doing the chapter readings and writing down the vocab words to study for the midterm and final. If you have her you will be just fine!
She is a really nice teacher, and the class is pretty easy, with hardly any homework outside of the main 2 group projects. Just hope that you don't get put with a group that sucks, cause then you will all be negatively graded for their bad job. Overall, I would definitely take her classes again.
Class setup: 10 open note quizzes(open for a day and can do with group), 2 presentations(1st you will be assigned a group, 2nd you can choose), midterm and final(will be given a study guide), there is extra credit available! I recommend you just go to class and you'll be fine! She is so sweet and I definitely recommend you take this class with her
She's very warm. I come in early every day, and she'll chat with me and ask how things are going. I don't like the class, but that's because I don't like my group very much. She also lives up to her position as a communications professor; she's very dynamic and her lectures are clear and concise. There are two extra credit opportunities, too.
Prof Mitchell is so sweet and caring! The class is very easy as long as you have a good group and attendance is definitely not mandatory unless you're presenting. A great option for SCOM 103
I enjoyed having Professor Mitchell for this class, but her lectures were never related to literally anything in the online textbook she provides. Then when it's time for the midterm and final it's ONLY on the textbook which she teaches none of in class. We watched a lot of videos during class.
Dr. Mitchell is a good professor, but SCOM is just such a boring class. Mondays are group work days, and you can essentially skip Wednesday and Friday and be fine. If you do go, she usually presents on a chapter of the textbook, and has videos to supplement. She is fun to listen to. There is an online quiz every week, one midterm, and the final.
Bobbie is a great professor. I had a bad group but still passed with an A. She isn't an easy or a harsh grader, but she is understanding. We had to do 3 SONA studies. We had an online open note quiz every week. There was a paper mid-term and final, but both were easy. Lots of extra credit opportunities.
This is a very good teacher to take for a very easy class. Gives time for all assignments and is a very easy grader when it comes to the presentations.
She is a great professor! Easy grader on presentations, gives opportunity for extra credit. Weekly readings on textbook, which she provides. Attendance is not mandatory, but Monday's are group work days, which you will need to show up for.
Taking this class online was a mistake. Imperfect work results in contemptive responses. No regard for life circumstances like working or being ill since the class is online. No choice for topics, you must do research she wants to see for both hyper-specific speech topics. If you aren't a communications major this class is dry with little learning.
Took SCOM 123 asynchronously with prof Mitchell and it was amazing! She gave great feedback and was super understanding about deadlines if you communicate with her. Had a quiz every week which was open book, 2 speeches, 2 tests, and a final which was all online. Highly recommend taking this class asynchronously if you can!
Dr. Mitchell was super sweet and very easy to reach via email. However, there was A LOT of material, and it was hard to decipher what was actually important as this course was basically self-taught. Speeches were oddly specific to certain topics and were graded toughly, just follow the criteria and you'll be fine
Very caring professor. Lists out what assignments are due for the week; usually a quiz and then some other assignment. We post our speeches to our classmates (in a group of maybe 5) where they give us feedback. Exams are easy. It takes up maybe 2 hours of time during your week. Would definitely take this class again!
Class was asynchronous so I didn't get to know her very well, but she is very kind in her feedback on assignments. Class was very straightforward, with readings and quizzes every week. Two easy speeches (informative and persuasive) with feedback to group members and three MC exams. Overall very easy class.
I forgot about this class a lot because it was online. Overall really good class just have to remember about it because her deadlines are very strict
I had this class online, but when we communicated over email, Professor Mitchell was great. EXTREMELY accessible through email, gives constructive feedback, and will ften let you resubmit assignments for a better grade. Super easy class with a great professor.
This class was asynchronous so clear deadlines were set, but work was relatively easy. There are two big speeches which can be a little confusing as you are teaching yourself, but go to communication center and you'll be fine. Open book quizzes every week which aren't terrible, 3 timed MC tests, and extra credit opportunities. Very sweet lady.
This class was online and had a strict deadline of Tuesdays at 5pm every single week. However she graded very fairly, and if you didn't get the grade you wanted she would tell you what you did wrong and let you resubmit as many times as you want. The two speeches took a bit of effort, but besides those, this class was not stressful.
Overall a pretty easy class, but she does not give very clear instructions on assignments and tends to be a tough, and picky grader. Two exams + the final, two presentations, weekly readings, and smaller assignments worth between 0.4-1.5 points. While she is easily accessible outside of class, her tone at times can come across as condescending.
All around great professor. Always offered very quick feedback and helpful responses whenever I had questions. Also has a great sense of humor.
EASY! I took this class as the asynchronous online option. She posts every assignment at the beginning of the semester so you have plenty of time to be prepared. If you follow the rubrics, put in effort, and submit assignments on time you can easily get an A. Two speeches, two tests, and the final, Can resubmit assignments for full credit.
easiest scom ever, all you have to do is 1-3 assignments per week and most of the time if you try you will pass. All quiz's and exams are online at home on canvas besides the final.
I LOVE BOBBY! Take this professor for SCOM if you can. The online class is super manageable—weekly Tuesday deadlines, all individual work, two speeches, and a final. Easy A if you stay on top of things, and is always quick to respond!
Great professor! Only a little bit of reading each week followed by a short, open-book quiz. 2 exams & 2 presentations throughout the semester, but the grading guidelines are clear and she gives amazing feedback while still being kind. The presentations are recorded via zoom, which was SO ANNOYING but she understands- just stay on top of your work.
I loved this professor! As long as you do the assignments, quizzes, and have well-thought-out speeches, then it's an easy A! She provides very helpful feedback and ideas for your speeches if you ask her; she is very nice and communicative, and really cares for her students. You can also resubmit assignments for full credit if something was wrong.
This class is so light; he is super chill. Easy grader and responds quickly to email. If I put the same amount of effort into any of my other classes, I would have failed them.
