If you like to be spoken to and treated like a 3rd grader, then take this class. She is probably the worst and most unorganized teacher I have had.
I would never wish her teaching on anyone. She talks down to everyone, and is very unclear when it comes to assignments. She does a great job of being unlikable. And I won't even get into her grading techniques..
There's lots of busy work for the sake of busy work. Activites are done repeatedly (lack of organization and planning). There is way too much work for a 102 course, even if she grades easy. Class discussions are a one way street.
Her grading system was unfair. I would see people who lacked basic grammatical skills recieve full credit on their papers, where I would recieve half because she just did not "like" my teaser or essay approach. She admittedly holds different st
HORRIBLE teacher, shouldnt be allowed to teach, doesnt know HOW to. Shes an IDIOT--the only reason why she's hard. Shes just too damn STUPID to be easy, and yet she treats students as if WE are the ones at fault. Used the Jane Schaffeur method--ABSURD.
The most INCOMPETENT and DEMEANING teacher I have ever run into here at UNLV. I once wrote her a one page email explaining that I was having trouble in the class - she wrote back a one line response telling me to check the syllabus. I want my money back!
Way too busy to teach all of the classes she has. Busy work. Too hard to complete group work online. Should be on an individual basis.
Very bad professor.
She was a very mean teacher. she won't help you if you are not doing good in the class, and she just want to fail you. Stupid lady makes you feel bad about yourself.
She's hard...requires a lot, but gives very little help in return. Not a good teacher, she's the only one who teaches online. She thinks people live and breath this crap.
Sabbath mostly teaches classes through distance education. This class was structured and clear on a weekly basis. You were primarily expected to do postings on the readings, but she requires you to write valid and insightful critiques of the work. Overall, she expects college level work.
This teacher was very helpful at all times. She doesn't like someone if they are not willing to do the work and they have a lack of respect for anyone in the class, but as long as you do the work and respect everyone, you will have no problems and probably love the class and the teacher!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS ONLINE!!! SHE IS VERY HARD AND VERY UNHELPFUL.SHE GRADES VERY VERY HARD.
Sabbath is the worst english teacher i have ever had. i had her as an in class teacher and she was horrible. we had to write a controversial paper and she didnt agree with my view so gave me an "f" on the paper. when i took the paper to the writing center they said it was great
A great teacher, always made herself available for help and discussion. She does give a lot of work but in her subjects that is usually required to understand the material. She clearly lets you know what is expected of you and if you are complaining I am guessing you failed due to your own ignorance
i took her online. there is a total of 1 post on the topic for the week and 2 thoughful peer comments due later in the week. it isnt hard if you just make yourself do it. there is once paper due and its broken up into stages over a month. its not that hard you just have 2do the work. this IS college
You people who are rating her negatively most likely didn't like her becuase you had to do work in her class. Grow-up and realize this is college not 8th grade some thinking and work is involved. Rate yourself not her!
Online class is crazy hard! Be prepared to write an average of 2-4 pages weekly plus a TON of reading.. I'm not saying she's a bad teacher, but she acts like you have all the time in the world to focus on her class and her class alone. Don't take just to fill a requirement, it's not worth it!
REALLY hard just because she gives you so much work. Didn't really like her. Don't recommend her.
This class was hard but the teacher is very nice. Expect to put in a lot of time if you take the online class. The readings are very good selections.
Dr. Sabbath... I will have to say that she is very hard critic and can be on you for the smallest****, but that criticism is sometimes good because it forces you to improve. Her other downside is that she is a very biased about certain people and if she does not like you she will be on you like white on rice.
There is a lot of work to do, but it was easy work. She really stuffs the regular semester into a summer semester. It is a lot of reading and writing, but if you do it, you get an A. She is very helpful, if you have any problems or questions, all you have to do is ask.
This is a hard class. Lots of reading and writing. Teacher is somewhat scatterbrained, it is hard to understand what she wants, but she is more than willing to help you understand it. She also likes for students to talk to her. Make sure you communicate with her, and your more likely to get a good grade.
A UNLV requirement forced me to take the class and a lack of interesting material kept it that way. The readings are extremly boring, I fell asleep many times reading the books. She's usually happy if you post 3 times per week, doens't matter if you make much sense. She's surprisingly fair in grading as a B-/C+ turned out to be an A-.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. See is rude and often curt with some of the slower students. She also is full of herself.
Be prepared to put in time. The reading and writing demands it. Email any questions and you'll get fast response. My only criticism would be the next assignment isn't always posted when you want it. Be willing to do the work and you can get a good grade. You will get exposed to a lot of works you might not read otherwise.
Do not take! There is so much work
She is a good professor. College is supposed to be challenging, not a cake walk. She was always helpful and courteous.
There is a lot of reading, but any literature class requires that. Dr. Sabbath is very helpful and wants her students to succeed. She is always available by email or by conference if you are having difficulty. Be prepared to write weekly 1 page essays. If you don't fall behind, the class goes smoothly.
This class has a tremendous amount of work but most if it is easy. Just don't take the class if you don't have the time. I started out the class with my own opinions (which contradicted hers)and I had a D in the class, well I wised up and went along with her beliefs and got an A as a final grade.
Class required a fair amount of work and it's not always clear what Prof. Sabbath wants, but overall not difficult at all. Like most classes, if you work and try you should have no problem with her class.
Thought this was for working adults, apparently not. INSANE amt of writing expected, 3 pgs every 2 days (w/ 6day wks planned) + large amounts of reading. Fine if you're a college student only, not for those who are taking DE b/c they work full time! I walk away from this class with no hope that working adults can ever continue their education.
Distance Education (Web Campus)
best english professor I've ever had. online english is sooooo much easier than in person. the class has a lot of reading, but COME ON PEOPLE its an english class. its easy to see that America seriously IS the laziest country in the world after reading some of these posts! lol.
Round table style class discussion. each day going to class is 2 extra credit points and she give many extra credit opportunities. really helpful before exams and very passionate on the subject.
She absolutely doesn't know the subject of theory and criticism. She has the students teach the class through required presentations. Mandatory speaking in discussions. She was allowing students to discuss incorrect stuff, probably because she doesn't know the right. seems like a HS drama teacher, not a college English professor. Hated it!
very nice, learn a lot without pressure. Loved her
Average amount of reading, some short and easy in-class essays. She grades mostly based on ideas expressed in essay rather than on technical grammar. Also gave us a lot of extra credit opportunity. No pressure, just be in class and do some work. All As & Bs in my class.I was disappointed to see such bad reviews about her. I?d go with her again.
I took Dr. Sabbath's DE summer course. There was a lot of reading and writing, which I expected. She has been the first instructor who actually cares about students and there outside life and obligations. She is very flexible, although she requires a lot of writing, reading, and quizes; she allows adequate time. Best English teacher I have had!
I completely disagree with most reviews written about Dr. Sabbath. I just took her DE summer course, and yes there was a lot of reading and writing. But remember we are attending UNLV not High School. Several times I e-mailed questions in evening, she would get back to me that same night. Best eng. teacher I have ever had!!
I think her class is great. Read the book, go to class and participate and you will be fine. The exams are all essay and if you have read the material, you will do very well. I love this class!
Her class is challenging. Take time to go through the readings, participate in class, and make sure you turn everything on time. She really know her material, and the readings she assign are just wonderful!!!
I took her distance education course. There is a large amount of writing which can be tedious at times and interfere with other classes. However she is a very fair grader and as long as you answer her discussion questions fully with quotes from the book the class is an easy A.
Professor Sabbath was one of the best English professors I have had at UNLV. The class involves weekly readings- which go to discussion- three essay exams (which she leaves open book so we can maximize our ability to write) and two powerpoint presentations through the semester. Her passion rubs off on the students.
This class was the most annoying class I think I have ever taken. Sabbath is all over the place, I don't think she does the readings most of the time, and for some reason she kept referencing the bible. And, she picked some of the most boring readings I can imagine. That being said, she's a super easy grader. I got a 100% on everything.
This professor is a bit odd, and confusing at times. I had grading issues with her the entire semester. She chooses favorites then grades them accordingly. A littleoff at times and tends to rable and waste class time. Seems very knowledgeable but does not always use it to benefit the students.
She really likes to discuss the readings from homework during class. I liked her style of teaching, though most do not because most students don't do the homework and don't come to class to learn. They come to get a gen. ed. out of the way with a reasonable grade. Personally, I think she is a gem of a teacher. I learned a lot.
super boring class...always interrupting students...rarely makes sense.
one of the best english teachers i have ever had. you can tell she loves what she teaches and that is a breath of fresh air. yes there is reading and a response essay every week, however the reading is super easy and the response essay takes ten minutes if that. this is college, not high school. do the work and you will get an a.
Don't take her if you want A.
Hard class, no help at all.
I disagree with the people below. She is not that bad of a teacher. The online quizzes are simple and the reading is short most of the time. Also this class was light on essays which is always nice.
Online course-Was very intimidated by the long syllabus and seemingly militant style of CAPITALS for half of it...After getting into the swing, I did really well. I love that she provides feedback on everything you write and there is a wonderful amount of resources to help you along. There is a mandatory posting on all discussions, but no problems.
This online class was easy and the longest essay was only 700-1000 words.
Dr. Sabbath is a nice woman, but her mythology class has been a mess. Four different syllabi, eight different discussion posts/group work presentations. She is very unsure of this class and it reflects in her teachings, if she decides to lecture. If you take this class with her, you will be teaching yourself and hating every minute of it.
Dr. Sabbath has a true passion for teaching and the subject. A lot of reading, weekly essays (short). Classroom discussions are the lecture. Participation is required and ensures you are doing the expected work. Approachable, email responsive and does not discourage students. A little scattered in thoughts sometimes, but brilliant thinker! Enjoy
Sabbath was an interesting class. She is very passionate about english and has some interesting perspectives. 232 is more of a discussion class...if you bring it up. Dont stay quiet and its an easy pass. There is a midterm paper and final paper....but they are 1000word max. Simple. SAVE YOUR QUIZ QUESTIONS IN WORD! ITS THE FINAL!
This class was a mess! She had 4 different syllabi, discussions, pwpt, etc. She wanted to do a lot but did not planned it well, which made it difficult to enjoy the class. At the end I was just trying to pass the class. We ended up 'teaching' ourselves. I didn't see the point in having a disc posted online & forced disc in class. Maybe reorganize it
Professor changed the syllabus, so don't plan on getting ahead. Is patient with students as long as they show effort. Class was facinating, lots of fun, and took away many useful skills.
Roberta Sabbath was very interesting, She was very helpful and easy to reach for questions and help outside of the class room. She was eagar to share her knowledge, which she has so much of in her perspective field of education.
Dr. Sabbath was helpful and responsive. I liked the clarity of her expectations and grading metrics.
I don't know if all UNLV Eng 231 classes are like this, but this was less like an English class and more like a religious studies class. You have to read ALL religious texts in this class. You have to do a journal post, and a quiz once a week. You do a test and essay for midterm and final. I was over the text subject halfway through the semester!
I didn't really enjoy the class and I really wish I did. It was just...confusing. She's responsive to emails but I found myself ready to go home before class had really even begun. Everything is online and attendance isn't mandatory. She was just kind of all over the place.
Such a nice lady, but she is all over the place! She gets so excited about the material that she seems overwhelmed. This is also her 1st time teaching this class. 6 posts online, 3 tests, readings from the Bible and the Qur'an, and one 8-10 page comparison paper. Plenty of extra credit. As long as you put in the effort she'll give you a good grade.
Very easy, online class. Would recommend taking her. The class may seem over whelming at first, but you get in to it rather quickly. Weekly discussion posts and quiz, mid term and final are papers, and two major quizzes. Don't wait until the last minute to post your discussion, she grades lower for repeated ideas. Much better than in person lecutre
She genuinely loves what she does and she gives great feedback on your work. Do the assigned reading, quote from the text on your discussion, make good points, and you will get an A. She also gave 5% extra credit - if you don' t get an A , you are not trying.
I wasn't looking forward to Eng231 but at the end I loved the course! The readings are def interesting and sometimes boring but as long as you sneak in a summary and have something interesting to say/write- easy A! Books are on reserve @ lib. Prof Sabbath is passionate and energetic- understanding as well. Allows up to 5% of extra credit!
She was kind and open to start a discussion on all opinions. She's a class that promotes free speech.
Professor Sabbath assigned quite a bit of work (weekly readings, 6 2-pg summaries of our readings, 3 exams, one 8-10-pg paper, 2 presentations), which is more than any of the other classes I've taken, and she forces each individual to participate in discussions. However, the material is really interesting and she is a wonderful, caring professor.
Professor Sabbath taught me an enormous amount of information for one semester. If you want to learn more about the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, and the Quran as LITERATURE then this is the class for you. Heavy reading and writing, but grades generously as long as you make some effort. If you go to every class, you get 30 e.c. points.
Dr Sabbath is a really nice lady and truly cares about her students. Class was boring at times but the readings are interesting. There was 300-500 word reading responses due every class day. She likes to share her political view but is also open to hearing other perspectives. I enjoyed the class overall and it is an easy A if you do all the work.
The majority of class consists of everyone reading their responses to readings from the night before. Super easy, just repetitive. Professor Sabbath is super nice. If you write even mildly well you'll get an easy A.
Professor Sabbath did her best to stay on task for this course but still ended up teaching a chaotic, unorganized class. Grades were never posted until the end, she grades on the amount of interest she has in your work. So if she doesnt agree with your topic, you will receive a bad grade. She also assigns work over holidays since you have time
Respected and caring professor who was very accessible outside of class. Enjoyed my time in her class but was often times confused by a changing syllabus and unclear directions.
Dr. Sabbath is one of those profs who cares deeply about students' interests. She tended to go off topic and change the syllabus constantly. Many people in my class did not like her, but I liked the interesting class discussions we had. The class followed a routine with each major paper, but it wasn't completely terrible.
Her Bible class is incredibly enlightening. She is intelligent and will help you out if you ask. Sometimes her instructions are unclear, but if she makes a mistake she won't hold it against you, I trusted her. Lots of informal writing assignments, not to hard, just do the work and you'll do great. You'll love the material! She is awesome!
I learned more in this class than all my years in college. She is passionate about her work & really cares about her students. There are 3 major tests, about 10 - 2 papers, a final research paper & 2 presentations. It is a lot of work but you learn so much! You must read & participate because she likes to randomly call on people to read.
To be honest, I wouldn't take her again. At the beginning of the semester, I was very frustrated the way she would run the classroom. It's obvious she is passionate about Mythology & cares about the student's well being. It's just very disorganized. You have to make sure to be prepared in the classroom. She calls on everyone at least twice.
This teacher is very passionate about politics so if you are not a student who likes talking about your political views with the class, do not choose this teacher. This class will also require many drafts, journals, and essay throughout the course as it is an intensive writing boot camp.
There's group discussions almost every class period and the class can feel repetitive at some points as there's only a couple major essays. Honestly, although the class can sometimes be boring and a little disorganized, it's not that hard to get an A. She's an easy grader and is clearly passionate. She also has extra credit so anyone can do well.
Sabbath is clearly passionate, but SO unorganized and it was even a bigger nightmare trying to complete this class online. Shell add some sort of assignment last minute without you knowing, but is good at answering emails and is patient if you work with her. There is way too much pressure on in class discussion and can get dry/political quickly
English 484A, 2020. There are a LOT of writing assignments to do, constant readings, and a big essay at the end. The tests were wildly inconsistent, often asking information not given. 3 group projects. Doesn't post grades. She might ask for a complete rewrite on any homework. The final essay is 8-10 pages. For a G.E. class this is NOT the choice.
The assignments of this class consisted of: six 600+ word posts, ten 250 word posts, three major exams, three work heavy group projects, and an 8-10 page final essay. If this work load doesnt sound horrific enough, the professor is unstable and inconsistent. She was vague and unclear w/ instructions regarding assignments. Don't take this class!
I planned on taking this class online, but they changed it last minute to in person. I decided to try it in person and was I wrong. The professor is nice, but her syllabus was not helpful with specific chapters and pages to read. We had to write 6 600-900 word discussion posts on top of a presentation and tons of reading. I wouldn't take her again.
Attendance is mandatory and big percentage of overall grade. I had an A in the course but since I barely showed up, I got a 50/100 on participation and it dropped my grade down to a B. There's a discussion post weekly (at least 550 words), and lectures consists of reading discussion posts and popcorn reading the books. Absolutely pointless.
She repeats the same things over and over.
Async course. She encouraged people to reach out, email, and ask questions. Responded to my emails in a timely manner and was very friendly! Class is structured for weekly assignments due every Sunday. Discussion post assignment was hard to grasp initially, but after a few weeks got used to it. (Final was waved due to the event on Dec. 6, 2023.)
Classes were all over the place and did not stick to the syllabus by always adding extra assignments last minute. My grade was always going down because I didn't know about them. Always puts students on the spot and attendance/participation are a big part of the grade. Besides that she is very nice and caring but I did not like her class at all.
Professor Sabbath is someone who really cares for her students. Her class was a piece of cake as long as you do the assignments. She is not a difficult grader at all and is more than willing to work with students on late work or if you didn't get the best grade on an assignment. I found her to be a sweet instructor who is just wants to help.
Overall and easy class, but there was moments where there was no structure in the class and things would change on a whim. It's pretty easy to put this class off as well because of this, so try to stay on it.
- assignments are unclear and all over the place - she sends malice sounded emails constantly - she changes things on the spot and then will blame you for not doing it - she'll be nice but then if she's mad she will make it everyone's problem; emotions over logic - she made this course very discouraging to take
Dr. Sabbath is an amazing professor who cares about her students. The classes consist of the 1st class of the week discussing the current weeks test. Usually, everyone reads 1-2 pages, and then we discuss. The 2nd class of the week usually starts the weekly assignment in class and previews what you will cover next week. 10/10 easy. just participate
