This is one of the worst professors I've ever had -- avoid him at all costs.
Boring, and completely unintelligible.

TERRIBLE! Very hard to contact for help. Also very hard to understand, and tends to stray away from material. Does not seem into helping students.

Wonderful professor if you enjoy Political Theory! I think most of the criticism that he gets as a professor is because students don't like political philosophy and that is their problem not his!
He's a bit hard to understand at first, but once the class gets going he is extremely interesting and insightful.

Alejandro's classes are interesting, but don't expect an easy grade. Speaks with a VERY heavy accent Fairly funny and insightful, slightly quirky. He hardly covers any contemporary thinkers in Contemporary Political Theory.
If you can't appreciate Alejandro, you shouldn't be in college. He's brilliant and very entertaining. Sure, he won't hold your hand. Boo-hoo.
College is not about boosting your own ego or inflexibility. Alejandro does nothing to assist the student. Learning is about motivation and information. He does none of this.
Total bad teacher wasted $
Hard to understand.
I had him for two courses...Wicked Smart and interesting. Once you get to know him, he is friendly.
Not much in the way of discussion, but that is fine because I didn't understand any of these books on my own. Real smart guy - his analysis of ancient Greek philosophical texts is outstanding.
To get any real attention from him, you have to be from Puerto Rico or somewhere close. Arrogant and full of himself. He doesn't seem to like students; I don't know why he is in the teaching business.
Professor Alejandro is a horrible teacher. He rants and raves for the whole class period while merely saying the same thing over and over again. He is rude and shows no compassion to students who are out sick. He treats his students like they are little kids. Frankly, he should find another job.
very helpful and approachable
one of the best teachers i've ever had...but the class was a little hard.
Proff. Alejandro is a wonderful teacher. If you do not understand political theory you will have a good grasp on it after taking his class. He is hard and asks a lot from his students but you get a lot in return. Don't take his class if you are not interested in the subject, you will not only be wasting your time, but his too.
HE is the best professor ever! He really loves what he teaches about and it shows. I took 3 classes with him and would have taken more if I could have.

He's very out there. Very abstract, which is probably alright for a poli theory teacher. Overall things weren't all that clear in class and he's also a typical umass liberal profesor.
He is hot
I enjoyed Prof Alejandro's passion to the course material he presented. He did seem distant in his approaches with the students but showed you the most important parts of the texts which helped in learning them better. Overall i enjoyed the course.
he seems like a really cool super smart guy, but I think his class is ridiculously boring. He's just going on and on about morality or society or something. It's just not what I wanted to learn about.
Can't understand a word he says. The title of the class is certainly not the material of the class.
He was a great professor, a heavy spanish accent. Very intelligent and kinda funny. Has an amazing understanding of the material and is a passionate teacher. If you don't like the ancient philosophers don't take the class.
He likes to talk alot. There is a lot of reading, and he moves kinda slowly through it, but if you keep up with the reading, take good notes (show up to class), then the papers come kinda easy.
Not very good at explaining concepts or speaking at a tone loud enough for people to hear what he's saying. Not good qualities for a professor teaching such a complex course. Also tends to pass out essay questions one week before they are due.
Interesting class, but was not what I expected. Very passionate about material, and speaks very well. However, his notes on the board are very unclear. Seems to get sidetracked easily, and we did not finish all of the books that were assigned.

This guy is wicked cool, real nice guy, one of the most passionate and intelligent professors at UMass. Expects alot from his students, but very straightforward about those expectations. Anyone who critisizes him must be very lazy or uninterested to not enjoy his teaching style.
I absolutly love this man! He is excellent. He makes me smile and the class is totally worth it.
He often does not speak loud enough/clear enough to be heard. Sitting closer to the front of the class is a must. His essays are often multiple separate questions that he expects you to integrate into a single essay-sometimes difficult. His interpretation of the material is rather hard to follow and he is always behind schedule.
amazing professor, who is very enthusiastic and adamant regarding his lectures and love of history, great professor.
Being smart and interested in what you're teaching does not make you a good professor! He was too focused on specifics and did not relate the reading to Political theory.Should be a classics/philosophy professor instead. Too focused on Nietzche and Plato and had no relevance to political theory. Bad time management and not willing to help students.
Professor Alejandro... He's a good teacher to have. Not the easiest to understand but he does crack a few jokes...50% of which are actually funny. All you have to do is read. Attendence is mandatory. Take notes on what he says and just stick with it. I was nervous but I came out of it all with a B and I acutally got something out of the reading.
As a junior Poli Sci major, I have taken classes with a good portion of the department. I am a 3.8 student who does his work. I did well in Prof Alejandro's class...but that does not mean that I recommend it. Steer clear of any of his classes! He lashes out at his students. Don't bring a laptop he will hold it against you. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
One of the smartest men I've ever met. Go to lecture, take notes, learn to understand his accent. If you don't want to work - not just busy work, actual thought - stay away. If you do accept the challenge, his class could change your life - no joke! Changed the way I look at the world.
unclear, no pedagogical skills
BEST TEACHER EVAAAAHH I WANT TO GIVE HIM A HUUUUUG
Alejandro is the most compelling, interesting teacher I've had at UMass. He makes lectures exciting...even if attendance wasn't mandatory I'd still have gone to class every day just to hear him speak.
Roberto Alejandro is amazing! He is completely into what he teaches, and inspires students to care about political philosophy. His accent, personality and theatrics make the class fun and interesting. Do the readings, go to class, take notes, and you will do fine, and have fun!
Amazing Professor, hands down. I would recommend waiting to take with Alejandro until you've had a year or so of PoliSci/College under your belt. This way, you'll get more out of the class. He is invigorating and truly loves what he is teaching. Don't leave UMass without taking with him!!
Unfortunately Political Theory was a bit of a disappointing class. Professor Alejandro knows a lot about the subject but does a terrible job teaching it. The class is highly unstructured, its difficult to tell what you're supposed to be reading and doing from class to class. Luckily the work is easy enough to do well on by itself.
I'm a polisci major and even though i got an A in the class it had very little to do with the professor. His lectures are disorganized. I literally could only understand 1 out of every 10 words he said. I had a great TA who explained everything at Discussion. Be sure to sit near the front to try to understand him if you do take a class with him.
A teacher whose quality cannot be judged independently of the complex subject matter taught. Political philosophy - by nature critical, challenging and normative - asks as much of the student as the teacher. In such cases the best a teacher can do, is ask you to bring the best of yourself - liberal and supportive Dr Alejandro is a true maestro
This class is perhaps the most intriguing class I have ever taken. Sure the course was difficult, but nothing should be too easy to learn. His confident enthusiasm strikes a pivotal chord within me that is essential for any speaker to have in order to peak interest. Everything I have learned will be vital to the overall sythesis of who I am to be.
Hard to understand between accent and pacing. WAY too much reading assigned for a ged-ed. Also, mandatory attendance, but poor check-in system.
For an intro level theory class, this class was ridiculous. He talks in circles and barely addresses a point. Did I learn anything about American Political Thought? No. Did I learn a lot about the federalist/anti federalist? Yes. Is anything I learned in this class applicable? NO! Don't take this class. Don't take this class. Don't take this class
The Professor is good at what he does, but it's extremely hard to understand him with his accent. His slides aren't very detailed and are not posted online. The best way to pass this class is to do your readings and pay attention in discussions. Your TA is your best friend.
This professor is awful. He is very difficult to understand and he is incredibly boring in class. The class is so disorganized which is not helpful at all trying to keep everything together all semester. Don't take a class with this guy.
This class is the most disorganized course you will take at Umass. His slides are a bunch of quotes and he doesn't title them. Attendance is taken and he makes the class mandatory. He is very confusing and hard to understand as well. This class really goes nowhere. Don't take this class if you don't have to you'll just regret it
Completely disorganized professor, directions for midterm essay were no help what so ever. My TA, a female, was on a constant power trip the entire semester and provided little help with assignments. The lecture notes only help because they provide you with the specific quotes in readings which show you what's most important in the readings.
Do not take his Class he is completely unhelpful during lectures and gives you 5 days to write 6 page papers with about 10 hours of research behind it. The TA’s give no assistance in helping you understand the lectures and this class will just make you stressed.
He just puts up a bunch of random notes and phrases and then talks about whatever he feels like, I've learned mostly from my TA. If Professor Alejandro were to put up on a power point his grocery list and then go on to talk about his thought on racism in relation to professional sports during a class on American Politics I would not be surprised.
Roberto Alejandro is extremely passionate about what he teaches... it'd... just be nicer if I could understand what he was saying over his extremely thick Spanish accent. He also tends to ramble in his lectures. Also, his policy for this course is, 4 absences drops a letter grade, 5 is a fail.
One of the worst courses I've ever taken. I understood about 50% of what he said due to his thick accent. When I did understand, I would try to participate & give my own opinions.. don't do this. He is not open to the idea that any opinion other than his own is correct. He also is technologically illiterate and is IMPOSSIBLE to get in touch with.
I found this class to be so confusing. The professor was very passionate but I never understood what he was saying. His PowerPoints are basically just scattered words with no titles. I don't know what I'm supposed to learn in the readings. TA isn't much more helpful but I guess a little clearer. But there are no tests just paper. Ok class.
It is extremely hard to understand him and his power point slides make no sense. This would be fine if I could understand him, but with his thick accent it would be nice to have some kind of visual aid to help the class comprehend the point of his lectures. I rely on my TA to get an understanding of everything he lectures about. Lecture is a waste.
Had a bit of a crisis in my life while taking his class (a Major Depressive episode) and even though I explained the circumstances he still failed me because I didn't meet the attendance requirement. This isn't abnormal for UMass but I think its indicative of the type of Professor he is. If the class is big he wont care about the students.
I was dreading this class after the first lecture, but I slowly realized that as long as you focused during lecture and cleared everything up in discussion, you will be fine. His accent may come off as intimidating but the major concepts of the class are easy to follow. Definitely go to lecture because you will fail if you miss more than 4 I think.
Although there are long papers, and he talks the whole time, if you go to class and pay attention, you can learn a ton. He is unbelievably intelligent and has a lot to offer if you can pick up on his insight. I'm in a frat and am certainly not the most studious individual but I am a strong writer. I recommend taking this course if you are too.
It can be hard to understand him at first and he doesn't use a lot of visual aids. These two things make it hard to pay attention and additionally he doesn't always make his concepts clear.
The issue is not his accent but instead what he chooses to talk about. While you'd think "American Political Thought" would be about a contemporary study about how political thought developed in America and how it surfaces in politics today. Instead expect a rambling series of lectures about specifically western political thought during the rev.
His accent can make lecture difficult to follow. The powerpoint slides contain little information. Only gives five days to write each paper. Papers incorporate lecture slides but rely heavily on assigned readings. Definitely revise your rough draft with your TA before handing in your final draft. Class isn't too difficult but requires a lot of work
Roberto is extremely passionate and intelligent in his teaching of political theory. Yes, he has a strong accent but it is not a big deal after the first lecture or two. If you go to class, pay attention and/or take notes you will be ok. Theory is very specific so a lot of people don't like the content and think it's the professors fault.
Professor Alejandro is an interesting guy, and certainly seems to be an expert in some areas of politically theory. However, his accent is difficult to understand at times, his power points are essentially useless (almost no notes on them), your entire grade is essentially three papers, and he gives you short notice. Still, the course is an easy A.
The professor is difficult to understand, and his PowerPoints aren't any help as they are just as disorganized as his lectures. He treats his intro courses like higher level classes than they really are. You are graded through attendance, a couple quizzes and 3 papers. The papers are long and he only gives you a maximum of 5 days to write them.
Stay away is all I can say. Hesitate to give him a 1, deserves much lower.
Worst class I've taken at UMass. I took this class because it's required for PoliSci majors, but I would definitely recommend waiting a semester or two to take the class with another professor if you have the time.
Alejandro is a very knowledgeable man but is not a very good lecturer which is why there are so many negative reviews for his class. He has a Spanish accent which many use as an excuse for getting poor grades be in reality if you do the assigned reading than your essays will be fine. He only has 3 essays (1 is the Final) and random pop quizzes
If you think this will actually be a class about "American Political Thought," you're dead wrong. We started discussing Hamilton, Madison, and federalism vs antifederalism in late September, and we're still in the late 1700s talking about them. His notes are extremely disorganized and vague. Avoid this class at all costs.
Prof Alejandro is one of the most passionate professors I've ever had. His accent was negligible and his lectures were enjoyable. The reading is mostly from historical texts, which he provides, and is sometimes substantial, but doable. The papers are straightforward and there is sometimes pop quizzes. I'll be taking another class with him next term
Roberto is an incredible passionate teacher who really knows his stuff. He however won't always give you the bullet points of an idea he wants you to understand. Instead he will give several passages and first source documents that show, instead of explain it. It can be a little confusing and takes a bit to adjust, but overall learned a lot.
One of the worst professor I have ever encountered. So incredibly disorganized. If you email him he will never respond. He never gives grades/comments back on papers. The syllabus does not mean anything. You will never know your actual grade or even what he expects.
I really wanted to like this class and this professor but I couldn't. He is really passionate and knowledgeable but he's so disorganized. Doesn't follow the syllabus, sends emails in the middle of the night, makes it impossible to plan out your work because he will switch deadlines. Inconsistent paper formatting. Made the semester so difficult.
The content of the class is very interesting but your entire grade is based on three papers and you are given a short time frame to complete them. The lack of lecture slides on Moodle also makes it more difficult to work on the papers and you must take very detailed notes in order to do well/
Class itself kind of interesting, but he is so disorganized and doesn't seem to be leading anywhere in his lectures. The worst part is the assignments, there are a few pop quizzes and a few papers that are about 3 to 4 pages of writing with weirdly inconsistent formatting assigned and due in 4 days. Can't plan to work ahead of time, ridiculous.
Big fan of Prof Alejandro, at first I dreaded the class but I realized it was because my TA was absolutely ridiculous. I still did fine in the class but Alejandro is great, the accent like goes away after the 2nd lecture or so.
Very disorganized. After the first few classes, the accent doesnt matter but his ideas always seem disorganized and can be hard to understand despite the readings. This is not an upper level course but he teaches it as such. Graded on a few things with inconsistent formats designed to trip you up. Overall a terrible class despite its potential.
AWFUL CLASS. Professor Alejandro and his TA both do not speak english well, which is no problem except for when you cannot understand the lecutres. He did not teach, instead he just made the whole class a discussion where people just stated opinion. Also the grading on the essays was impossible. He gave little to no instruction and then graded hard
Horrible course overall. Very limited time to complete papers, has a very thick accent that is difficult to follow, sends you readings in the middle of the night before class, lacks a clear organizational structure, has no express reasoning to support his grading procedure, was hard to nail down for office hours/appointments, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
You get what you put into the class. Many of the people here do complain about his accent. I say that's mildly racist and mean. He is perfectly understandable. He is clearly articulate about the subjects and actually cares about political science. He is a tough lecturer, and does go on tangents. But, he will talk with you and is accommodating.
Professor Alejandro was a very passionate professor who taught our class well. He encouraged students to engage in the readings by offering our opinions and interpretations in class discussions. While, he didn't give us too much time to complete term papers, it resulted in an me being able to work more productively in a shorter time frame.
Honestly, the class itself was incredibly interesting and the content was very engaging, but I cannot give Professor Alejandro more than a 1. The lectures are threadbare and random and the 3 papers that make the majority of your grades are given without grading criteria and with a short time frame. He doesn't explain concepts very in lecture either
This prof was very unreasonable when it came to the time we were given to complete 5-6 page papers and assigned them over the weekends every time. Super strict in attendance, only allows 4 absences total btwn the lectures AND discussions. Lots of reading too, likable guy but unorganized class.
Professor Alejandro was hard to understand, his slides mysterious, and what he wrote on the whiteboard was extremely unclear. He sprung surprise quizzes on us without warning and papers were assigned with less than a week before they were due. It seemed unnecessarily stressful. The amazing TA I had was the only reason I survived this class.
This class is literally a Highschool AP US history course with way too much detail 1. Tons of dry, old English material 2. Professor has unorganized or difficult to interpret thoughts 3. Accent is an issue (Take it from someone who studies foreign language) 4. Does not care for student concerns My TA is the only thing that saved me
He is so unclear. Like impossible to understand. Super disorganized. Absolute mess. Moodle page and syllabus were an absolute joke.
Has a really strong accent, its impossible to understand what hes saying half the time. Lectures are VERY vague/conceptual so its hard to keep up, or stay focused with how monotonous his voice is. I never knew when he was going to randomly upend my week with a random paper or quiz. 0 compassion for his students. Avoid at all costs.
The class was so boring. He drones on forever about the same 4 boring points. I learned a lot from my TA though. Honestly if she taught the class it would be way better.
The accent is not a problem at all. The lectures were certainly the worst part of the class. The class feels long and quite arduous. The questions given to us on the paper topics are horribly dull and boring. The work load is not bad because it's only the three main papers. But then again, the paper topics suck.
Professor Alejandro is a extremely nice professor and is very understanding of the plights of his students, but that doesn't disregard the multiple issues with this class: There are very few assignments that are graded months after being assigned, the assignments themselves are needlessly overcomplicated, and there is little communication.
Hes very disorganized and gives little to no instruction. The paper topics were confusing. My TA helped me to understand them, but the professor did not seem to care about us as students at all.
Normally get great grades in PoliSci courses.... this class was hell though. I had heard some things about this professor, but decided to disregarded it because it was one of the only 200s open that semester. DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE. Avoid at all costs. Ended up P/F with a B+ putting in maximum effort.
Just don't do it. That's it, listen to me and don't do it.
Seemingly wants to set students up for failure. He disables chat which prevents any and all kinds of student organizing in the class. He also seemingly gets upset with students who ask too many questions. Takes a long time to respond to emails and speaks with zero direction in his lectures, which regularly go over the hour and a half class time.
Being forced to take another of his classes, here are the persisting issues. Thick accent and monotone voice. Disorganized thoughts and slides. Difficult to interpret his thoughts/questions. Quizzes and Test questions are poorly written, difficult to understand. Tangent prone. Dry material. Zero creative thinking. Answers are his alone.
All lectures, not engaging at all. Be prepared to be bored out of your mind as he talks for the whole class about things that don't make any sense.
There's a lot on here about his accent, and I was worried I wouldn't be able to understand him, but people love to exaggerate. The real problem is his teaching style. 100% long and un-engaging lectures and he'll often go off on tangents about nothing. If it wasn't for the TA and classmates, I would've had no clue what to write for his assignments.
Papers are due at 8pm, not midnight, and at 8:01 you are locked out from submitting. He talks super slow and does not make clear points, which was annoying because the lectures are the only place I could ever find answers for his assignments. If you do not need to take this class, don't.
The man and his TA's are the toughest graders I have ever seen. They require textual evidence, but not too long, but don't paraphrase, explain the quote, but you have only a paragraph to do so, but your explanations are never detailed enough. Not to mention their personal interpretations of the work always affect your grade. Don't take this class.
The material for this class is fairly easy but the professors lectures are borderline nonsensical in their rambling length. The most boring class Ive ever taken.
This has got to be one of the worst taught classes I have ever taken. His lectures are impossible take good notes in because the slides he uses only have a couple bullet points, and when he speaks he uses a monotone voice that puts everyone to sleep. His class is based off of 3 major assignments all worth huge parts of your grade. Avoid him.
Don't take his class, his classwork is based entirely on lectures which he doesn't provide videos or give slides for. He's stern, and has a very thick accent which makes taking notes very difficult. Then his assignments are based on 3 big projects which are barely spoken about.
I had this professor for a class last semester, and was not happy about getting him again, but I thought he did a much better job in person rather than online. Attending lecture and taking good notes are essential. They'll make the big papers much easier, and he sometimes gave us some softball quizzes in class to boost our grade.
i considered dropping out of college every time i sat through one of his lectures. id rather work at mcdonalds.
Some people's complaints about him are valid, but if you pay attention and take good notes the class is actually very informative. He gives lots and lots of citations in his lectures, which are very, very useful for the papers, which is basically your entire grade so develop strategies to get these citations down. Pay attention in lecture!
Roberto seems like a good guy but his teaching method is close to impossible to learn from. He'll go on these long tangents that never end in anything relative, he'll write a ton of individual words in no arrangement, and show slides that are close to the same. I recommend writing down everything you see/hear and figure it out/organize later on.
I am really shocked Roberto is still allowed to teach here, it is just really really difficult to understand him/ follow his teaching. PowerPoint's are terrible they are just random quotes that make no sense. Not to mention this class was supposed to be AMERICAN political thought, and we have not talked about a single aspect of American politics.
Polisci 203 - I don't think that Alejandro deserves all the hate that he gets. It is sometimes hard to understand him but he speaks up, if you pay close attention and take good notes you will pass. He literally tells you what he wants to see on the papers. This is a slow developing class but if you stick with it you will get something out of it.
you do not have to put in very much effort to do well in Professor Alejandro's polisci203 class. Just go to the lectures and take notes and you will do just fine. The only work outside of class that was assigned were the papers and he gave a reasonable amount of time to complete them (usually a week). He is very passionate about what he teaches.
Only redeeming part of this class was that he's understanding if you reach out in advance about a sickness, etc. Missed two classes in the middle of the semester which happened to contain the info for half an exam which tanked my grade (the questions were based off the in-class discussions, not anything you could catch up on afterwards). Just don't
Gives passionate lectures. Be prepared for tedious speeches, but the content is presented in an engaging environment.
Lectures extremely difficult to understand. Pop quizzes during the lecture, mandatory discussion sections that grade on participation which is frustrating when taking this class as a gen-ed and you aren't super familiar with the topic beforehand. 3 "papers" which are really just a bunch of open responses.
Incredibly knowledgeable, yes, but teaching is not his strong suit. His lectures put people to sleep and are sometimes incredibly difficult to understand. The discussion sections are good thanks only to the T.A's. All that said, the class really isn't difficult, and while it may be hard to see while taking the course, it's a pretty easy A.
His slides are very incoherent and hard to understand. He isn't the best lecturer either. I stopped going to the lectures and just read all the documents we had to and attended discussions. The TAs are great!
Professor Alejandro is extremely understanding. Not only are his lectures extremely well prepared with deep material and a lot of insights, he also is willing to work with his students as long as they don't give up and want to do well. Professor Alejandro is compassionate and works with motivated students to accommodate when needed. He has great TA
i dropped this class during the lecture
Prof. Alejandro gets a bad reputation but he is really not that bad. He does have a heavy accent, but after 2 classes you get used to it. If you want a good grade, you have to attend class and take notes (he doesn't post any). The answers to essay questions and pop quizzes were always discussed in class. You will do good if you go to class and try.
He's on the tougher side, but the material is kinda interesting. Lecture is crucial to doing well as slides aren't posted. Discussion is mandatory and ta's give feedback on the many papers you write. His accent is a little hard to understand but he's very passionate about what he does. A lot of writing, pop quizzes, & attendance but its interesting
His lectures can be hard to follow due to his accent and the text density of his slides. If you can get past that, he is one of the most knowledgeable and insightful instructors you'll ever meet. It's easy to find fault in an instructor, but mastery can only be reliably achieved if one can adjust their learning skills to the instruction.
The class is easy to pass because he warns students when "pop quizzes" come up. These quizzes are open note open responses done on paper. Other than this, there are a few essays consisting of multiple open response questions. These require a lot of reading but discussion and chat GTP can help dumb it down. The class itself is very boring and sleepy
Professor Alejandro's lectures can be tough to follow, but the class isn't too difficult if you stay engaged. Definitely use tools like Unstuck AI alongside the course materials to prep for assignments and exams. The TAs make the discussion sections worthwhile.
Professor Alejandro graded really harshly and told my class our responses were "disappointing" as they did not relate to lecture. However, his slides and lectures were mostly unhelpful. Lectures were all over the place and painful to complete. Overall he is passionate about politics, but he is not a great teacher and cares little for student time.
To anyone saying Roberto's classes are bad, the only thing I can concede is that his accent does make understanding him somewhat difficult. But, I kid you not, he gives you every answer to the questions on his papers in class if you pay attention to what he says. Same thing for the "pop quizzes." The TAs are extremely helpful (if you ask) as well.
if you value your sanity dont bother taking this course
CHRONICALLY ILL AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES STAY AWAY! Would give a 0 if I could. Miss more than 5 classes = fail. Lecture ONLY- no slides, no notes online. He gives you answers in class but the only way I survived was by transcribing the entire lecture. Unaccommodating to even documented illness. Will lash out or ignore you. Lowkey sexist vibes?
Highly recommend this class! anyone can pass! boring lectures where half the class stops attending mid semester, so much so that attendance becomes necessary. Fortunately, that doesn't matter because you can cheat! Proctors apparently have glaucoma, so u can cheat during exams! like my classmates sitting next to me writing straight from their phone
