my favorite professor so far at LMU! he's super chill and is always willing to help! definitely go to his office hours. he assigns a bunch of homework packets.. DO THEM! its the best way to study for the tests. also, study for the quizzes! they are easy points!
Really cool professor. Assigns homework about once a week or so and a quiz about once a week or every two weeks. He teaches basically out of the textbook and through variables so if you haven't seen the material before it may be a little tough to understand with all the variables. However, if you go to office hours he is extremely helpful
he explains everything that is required... It's easy ;)
It's a difficult class and you have to put a lot of time into it and go to office hours as often as they are available, but he is a great teacher, super nice, and very patient. Lectures are fast-paste and his grading is tough. He does not curve either, which sucks. Pay attention, work and study hard and you will be okay.
Class was not bad, he teaches just as if you were to read the textbook. But, if you go to office hours he is extremely helpful! He's a super nice guy and his quizzes are really easy. His tests are harder, but like I said office hours helped me the most.
BEST MATH TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD. No exaggeration. He will meet with you whenever, wherever. I really struggled in the beginning because I'd never had a math class that was difficult for me before. Once I started going to office hours I realized how tirelessly he works to help his students. He even came to my work once to help me! 1010 recommend.
Really a nice professor. Very straight forward with tests and what he wants from us. He is "THERE TO HELP YOU AS MUCH AS HE CAN" . Very understanding. Very organized. Homeworks and webworks are lame. One funny thing is that he likes introducing new topic or go to the next section 10 mins before class ends (probably to keep up with the schedule) LOL
Roberto Martinez is a very good Math teacher. He explains all the concepts and his ideas really clearly. He is accessible outside of class, during office hours and he really helps out. That said, his class is difficult, with lots of homework and his exams are a lot harder than what we do in class or in homework.
way way too difficult
He's really good at explaining things, and he's super accessible. He has tons of office hours and makes it easy to get help. HOWEVER, his tests are super hard and worth the majority of your grade. Like half of my class dropped after the first two tests. So if you're looking for an easy A, this isn't the prof for you. Otherwise, he's great.
Hardest math Professor.
He tests much, much harder than any math class I have ever taken. Every subject from Algebra 1 to this class is evaluated in his exams. Things such as the quadratic forumla must be remembered in order to do well. He does not explain the material well enough to be able to complete the homework without struggle. Insanely difficult course. Many drop.
Tests hard, usually not on the material covered. Really tough grader, class started with around with 20 people and ended with less than 10. People usually get F's on his class. Do yourself a favor, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! His tests are unreally hard and not on the material covered in class
He is really hard but I respect him as a teacher.
horrible
worst math professor at lmu. insanely hard, do not take
He was a really good teacher, and he's super accessible and helpful even outside office hours, and there were daily quizzes and worksheets to help you, and the homework covered everything possible. BUT the tests were really hard and they're a majority of your grade. It's definitely not an easy A but you will learn the material.
GREAT PROFESSOR!
This was the hardest class i've ever taken, but I feel like I can be a calculus professor now. You will need to live at office hours, but if you put in all of the effort, Martinez will pass you. That being said, if you are not going onto a degree which very calculus heavy, probably avoid him as it's not worth the work.
If you get the question wrong, he makes you feel stupid. He expects his students to already have background knowledge on the concepts he is teaching so if you've never taken calc before, he is not the teacher for you. I go in to office hours a lot but all he does is help me solve specific problems. I still don't understand calculus.
Super difficult professor and makes the tests harder than they need to be. Now that this semester has been switched to online instruction he has made it a point to make the material more difficult, while failing to understand that learning math online is more difficult than in person. He clearly has no sympathy for his students and does not curve
Prof. Martinez is the best professor I've ever had. If you put in the effort and go to office hours you will for sure do well (I LIVED IN OFFICE HOURS). The reason why he has some bad reviews is because he is a GOOD professor, NOT an easy one. He always has a simple way of explaining really complicated things. He has a huge heart and loves helping.
Most uptight professor about grading I have ever had. He is a nice person, but very intimidating. There are many quizzes and most are not on the materials or examples he uses in class. Same thing with the exams. Just avoid this professor at all costs. You will have way better luck with someone else.
His calc 2 class was the hardest thing I've ever been through. I would consider myself decent at math and so much of what he tried to explain went over my head. It felt like he sped through the material during class. There were times where nobody knew what was happening and he got irritated we were asking a lot of questions. If you can, avoid him.
grades mercilessly
Toughest grader I have ever had so far in a math course, to the point where it just is ridiculous. He also is very intimidating and often rushes over topics with the expectation that we already know the material. Avoid his class at ALL costs
This was the hardest class I've ever taken, straight up. But I'd take it again. Martinez is not an easy professor, but he is a very good one. The exams and quizzes are hard, and you've always gotta stay on your feet with this class, but if you go to office hours and really make an effort you'll end the class as a better student than you started it.
Professor Martinez is a great professor! His class is challenging, but he gives points for work and tries to give you as much credit as possible. His class made me really understand the material and he was very helpful in office hours. If you show up to class and review the notes before quizzes and exams, you'll do just fine!
Did a poor job explaining most problems, graded work harshly, was not helpful in most regards and unless you went to office hours, he wouldn't give any more than a step of help for homework assignments. Assigned work that we had not learned yet and sent out equations instead of teaching us how to do them, which we were still required.
Seriously love this man. he's so organized which helps a ton. there is lots of hw & quizzes but so many that if u do poorly on some it doesn't effect ur grade. if u just copy what he writes during lecture & do the hws, u will be prepared for exams. he loves to help students & is available to help. there's also lots of extra credit on every exam!!
he is a tough grader but the hws and quizzes prepare u really well for the exams. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!! he explains things so much better there and if he knows you are trying to succeed by going to office hours, I think he's not as harsh of a grader. he seems kinda intense but gets really happy when students understand a concept they had trouble w/
His tests don't reflect the level of difficulty that the worksheets and homework are. The most difficult tests I ever taken and I'm a PreMed major. I dedicated much time to studying and practicing his problems and it got me nowhere. Be warned of this teacher. I was and I believed if I gave it my all I would succeed and I didn't because it's Roberto
I took Calc BC in high school, so I thought that taking Calc II my first semester would be primarily review.. boy was I wrong. This was one of the toughest classes I have ever taken. Martinez is very patient and helpful in office hours (GO TO OFFICE HOURS) but he makes his tests way more difficult than any homework problem or example we have seen.
hw is easy and his worksheets arent that bad but he does not prepare you for his exams but at the end of the year he really helps bump your grade up if you are on his good side and really show him that ur putting effort. Just participate a lot and go to office hours.
You have to really work for an A. It could be that it was all online but the tests were pretty difficult and the classes were VERY lecture heavy. I took notes, attended lecture, exam reviews multiple times, did the homework, and went to office hours but it was still a challenge. There was not a single homework that I didn't need help with.
avoid if possible. tests are way way harder than anything seen in class or on the homework
I took Calc in high school and this class was still hard. He gives you assignments at a certain difficulty but he makes the tests way harder than anything we have seen in class. He is very unorganized and has us take test retakes without even getting our original tests back. Avoid this class unless you are a calc supergenius looking for a challenge
Dr. Martinez is a great professor. As someone who was not always the best at math, I appreciated his focus on the conceptual understanding. As long as you are comfortable with that, you will succeed. His class is fast paced so I found his office hours more helpful than in person lecture. He also has a redo option for exams which relieved stress.
absolute worst Professor I have ever come across so rude and invasive! tries to pry into your personal information. I felt uncomfortable in his presence and dreaded going to office hours (I did anyway for my grade). His lectures were too fast paced. I learned nothing. I hope he is let go from this job. incompetent and disappointing.
Professor Martinez is one of the best teachers I've had. He explains concepts in a very clear way and makes students feel comfortable to ask questions. There is a moderate/heavy amount of homework, but it's only bad if you try to do it all on one day. He is always happy to help students outside of class. My only complaint is the hard test questions
terrible teacher. Exams are nothing like the homework or what he teaches in class. Its like hell teach you what 9+10 is in class and then ask you to calculate the speed of light without a calculator on the exam. Moreover, hell then accuse you of cheating! Avoid him.
THE TRUTH ABOUT ROBERTO MARTINEZ The worst. His tests are impossible and I have a horrible sinking feeling that he relishes in his own students' suffering. He has this retake system in place (because he knows that everyone will fail the first time around), which is exceptionally indicative of his heinous teaching ability. TAKE EXTREME CAUTION.
Professor Martinez is very understanding and really does his best to make sure you understand the concept you're covering. He's accessible outside of class and very easy to talk to if you're having a hard time in the class. He provides restest options for the exams as well which has been super beneficial, i definitely reccomend taking his class!
Prof Martinez is extremely understanding and truly wants his students to succeed. As a summer course, he understands the pace is much faster than usual & students have other responsibilities. He explains class content very clearly and goes over it several times until fully understood. Highly recommend him!
Professor Martinez is defintiely one of the most chanllenging professors that I've ever encouraged, but he is also one of the most hardworking and caring professors I've ever seen. If you put in the work to go to office hours and study, he will help pass. Also love the ability to retest, defintely helps witth the exams being so diffcult.
This is the most caring professor I have come across. He is always accessible and really does want to see his students succeed. If you are having trouble in his class, reach out and ask for help. He is super understanding and just wants to see his students succeed.
His tests were nothing like the homework. I was able to solve all of the home work with little to no problems but as soon as I went to take the test it looked nothing like the homework that he gave us to do.
You're going to be doing more writing than actual math, I only had to take this class because I didn't take the AP Calc test my senior year and he genuinely ruined math for me. He seems to less about teaching and the well being of the students than how wordy your math explanation is.
Before every class, you have to watch a lecture and complete a homework assignment AND THEN go to class and listen to an entire lecture. Even with 4-5 lectures a week, everything still seemed disorganized
He goes above and beyond outside of class (1-2 hours over his time) to make sure you understand his teachings. This is a difficult class, and he asks a lot of you, it's important that you go to office hours. There's lots of writing, but if you go to his office hours he helps you through it (GO!!). He is willing to help all of his students succeed.
Okay professor. Required videos + questions before each class, somewhat hard. Disconnect between videos and in person lectures, hard to follow. Tests can be tricky (conceptual questions). Required concept question assignments for each unit, homework is not graded. Gets confused on material from Calc 131 class, OHs are combined for all his classes.
There are three exams and they are nothing like the homework. He does allow for retakes, but that is just because he knows everyone will fail the first time. And when you do retake the test you have to write out pages of explanations, and if they are wrong he will not grade that portion of the retake exam. Lots of homework and very difficult exams.
Do not take this class unless you are naturally very good at Math. This teacher does not make math easy for those who struggle grasping concepts. And beyond that he is an extremely tough grader, the tests are very challenging and he gives pretty much no partial credit, even on very long and challenging problems. Please do not take.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!! Professor Martinez is quite possibly the worst teacher at LMU. He has no caring for students and is an impossible and unfair grader. I am guessing he will be fired soon by LMU but until then, stay away from this class!!!!!
Stay away from Professor Martinez at all costs. A terrible teacher and an ever worse human being. He fails the majority of the class, and somehow, LMU is unaware that this horrible teacher is still on campus. Do yourself a favor and stay away as far as possible, as this is quite possibly the worst class you will ever take.
He is easy to access outside of class, very understandable, does retake his exams, and takes the highest score for each problem. Go to his office hours for a more in-depth explanation. There is online homework due before each class but you have 3 attempts for each problem and do worksheets in class that are similar to the ones on the exams.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND STAY AWAY FROM PROFESSOR ROBERTO MARTINEZ. He is a tough grader and does not give partial credits. He asks questions in the exam very differently than the homework and lecture examples. I AM NOT SURE HOW THE MATH DEPARTMENT IS NOT AWARE OF THAT.
He is a nice guy and decent at teaching. But practice questions (online, worksheets, short answers) look nothing to what he puts in exams. He intentionally makes exams difficult and does not give you enough time to complete them. There are optional harder retakes so you are doing an exam every other week. Expect your GPA to drop significantly.
Absolutely love professor Martinez!! His classes are definitely a lot of work but he is very willing to help you out. No real "homework" as long as you study his tests are not as difficult as everyone is saying and he allows retakes. The retakes do have harder questions but I always tend to make back about 5-10 points on each retake.
The workload requires you to invest more than half your total study time as he thinks it's your only class. You might make up 5-10% in his harder retakes, but does that really help when you are scoring below 50%? Take the other professor teaching the class if possible. I needed to take this class and unfortunately, he was the only one teaching it
Very helpful. Office hours are a life saver. Fair grader, but tests are hard. Good thing theres a redo. Will answer questions on Discord at 10pm. Very dedicated.
Professor Martinez is smart and efficient, but his exams are incredibly hard and you won't encounter those problems anywhere til the day of. 3 exams constitute 50% of your grade, 1 redo/exam allowed if you make corrections on your first exam and state why you got it wrong in excruciating detail or else he wont let you retake. OVERALL, DON'T TAKE!!
Genuinely the worst professor I have had. The grading on written homework is harsh and knit-picky. His lectures are scattered and confusing. He expects that you attend his office hours frequently, and if you don't you will not succeed. His exams are BRUTAL. He does not care about failing his students. Save yourself and don't take his class.
Course structure is outright confusing. Class lectures teach one thing, daily homework teach another, and tests force conceptual understanding/pure memorization (even though this hasn't been emphasized). Professor actively avoids showing work for practice examples and releasing answers for past assignments/tests. Most of class is self-taught. AVOID
Calc 3 is already a hard subject. A professor who refuses to release keys to practice problems and past exams impedes proper understanding. This results in a disproportionate amount of time dedicated to the subject (not even my major) where students don't know they are right in terminology or work until the exam. Unfortunately, my only option. RUN!
Professor Martinez is a caring professor that is accessible outside of class. I recommend practicing problems from the worksheets and previous exams for studying since the homework problems tend to be easier than the actual exam. He can be a tough grader but there is a redo option. Overall very rewarding class once completed.
Great professor who really wants his students to learn. You do learn a lot in this class but that is simply because it is so hard. He creates such a challenging class that it makes it impossible to not learn calc while passing this class. DO NOT take him if you want an easy class.
Professor Martinez definitely makes the course more challenging, however, he really helps you to learn and understand the material. He is constantly available outside the classroom, and he really wants to help if you ask for it. The tests and homework assignments are definitely difficult. Go to office hours!
Prof.Martinez is genuinely a sweet guy. He is willing to help you succeed if YOU put in the work. He does make it EXTREMELY difficult to get a high grade in this class with his exams so I don't recommend taking him if you're just in calc to fulfill a requirement, b/c his class is VERY tough. This class WILL give you a headache, but you learn a lot.
Don't take this class if you need a good grade in math and actually want to learn. He teaches teaches subject in such a difficult manner that makes it difficult for students to understand and actually learn it. His tests are also very very difficult and he made us do every assignment to even be eligible to take exams.
If you are looking to get a good grade in this class, don't take him. You are not able to take the exams if you do not complete all the HWs that are worth zero points. The exams are extremely hard and are required to memorize unnecessary information for exams. More professors should be provided for future math courses.
The WORST professor I could've ever imagined. Literally makes it impossible to get an A. Treats office hours like mandatory class (I went to EVERY single one and BARELY passed), makes retakes purposefully at least twice as hard as exam (NO STUDY GUIDES), write paragraphs abt math(???)Literally would do anything to go back and not take this class!!!
Great professor and very accessible outside of classroom. Only downside is tests are really hard and no curve for hard classes. But overall very recommend if you just want to learn the materials and does not really care about getting full As
Martinez is a good professor but very hard. He makes the classes and material easy to understand and engaging. There is a LOT of homework, but if you actually do the assignments and dont use chat gpt it will help you study for the test significantly. Office hours are pretty much mandatory for some assignments which is annoying. Tests are very hard.
This dude hand out HW like its candy that you can only eat from his class. No time for other class HW between all the assignments and requirements to take exams, let alone having to go to office hours all the time. You gotta prove understanding of topics before taking an exam that already proves your understanding of topics, it's senseless.
Don't take
Unless math comes easily to you and you have a lot of time/dedication to doing daily/weekly homework assignments, this class will be incredibly challenging for you. He lets you retake every test, but both exams are extremely difficult, as you are expected to know more of what you were taught in class. Be prepared to spend a lot of time and tears.
Roberto Martinez will fail you for not being a math PhD student, a terrible professor and tough grader.
Amount of effort he expects is unproportional to actual benefits you get out of this lass. Theory-heavy written analysis of math concepts when the actual homework, lecture, and most importantly TESTS are anything but. Treats the class like math majors pursuing a PHD and has poorly organized structure of class. Emphasizes brute memorization
Professor Martinez is a great professor. The class is hard, of course, because its math, but if you put in the work, attend office hours, ask questions, etc. you'll be fine. he's great at getting you to think about how to solve problems that are tricky for you instead of automatically feeding you the answer which def helps improvement faster
After each test, I told myself, "Wow, that was the hardest test I've ever taken". Unholy amounts of homework. Requires constant undivided attention; be prepared to sacrifice other classes to prioritize this one. I don't know anyone with anything nice to say about the professor or his class. Yes, Calc 3 is hard, but any other teacher is better.
The course material is tough but Martinez does a very good job of giving resources for his students to succeed. He has very good test revision policies and is happy to explain any questions in class, office hours, over email, or on the class discord. Attendance is not required but is definitely beneficial to succeed in this course.
Yes, this class is difficult, but Prof. Martinez truly cares about his students' success. He is always open for office hours and will stay on campus even later if requested. The exam revision/retake policy is really good, and he is a fair grader on the exams. The workload for this class is very reasonable for the difficulty of the course material.
Martinez is a sweet person, but this class is tough. Absolutely possible to pass, but his tests are really difficult and stressful. The questions are much more difficult than the homework and what we learn in class. You kind of have to go to office hours which is kind of unfortunate but he is always there to help.
to the other 5 stars reviewers, we know it's you martinez.
