pretty good.
she made some very strange comments in class (like humans evolved from orangutans?) that had nothing to do with english. She is extremely boring and you can barely hear her when she talks. NOT RECOMMENDED. She has hard tests, SEVERAL quizzes, and is a highly unfair grader. BEWARE (she is nice though, just severely misguided)
I am not an English lover at all, but this class wasn't too bad. The tests were hard, but I did better on the papers. Quizes every class period, easy but you have to keep up with the reading and go to class.
Her essays and tests are pretty hard and you need to express HER views to even think about a decent grade on the essays. She doesn't grade very well and does make strange, misguided comments in class. Avoid her if you can.
She is a really cool l;ady and an awesome prof. She has an interesting insight which I haven't found in other English professors. If you are trying to just "get through" your required english however, I would not take her class, you WILL have to work hard and keep up, but if you doo, it will be rewarding.
She made the class interesting by her knowledge of EVERYTHING. some of the stories we read were hard but she made it easy to understand. she gives necessary quizzes everyday but they were predictable and easy to catch onto. she gave study guides for exams so nothing was unpredictable. i got an A but worked for it.
She is interesting, but it is hard to get good grades on your papers and the topics are hard. So if you are willing to work really hard, you will probably enjoy the class, but it is hard to do well on papers.
Yes she was hard. But not in a helpful way...in a mean way. She seemed more stuck on herself and how much she knew and was not interested in helping students.
Expect to work hard if you want an A. She's an interesting lady, but way too opinionated. She doesn't accept anyone's opinion but her own, so don't try and voice one in class. Go talk to her before each paper; she will tell you exactly what to write. Then, go and write it EXACTLY as she tells you to. I got an A, but busted my ass for it.
You will work hard for a good grade. Supposedly she claimed that she teaches lower division classes on a 400 level. She will help you with your paper before you turn it in. If you're not pleased with your grade, she will let you revise it and average the original and revised for the new grade. Her tests are not too hard, but they're far from easy.
I took 422, British Women Writers, during the summer. It was a lot of reading, esp. b/c session was five weeks, but it wasn't bad. The selections were easy to get through. We had quizzes everyday, which actually ended up a good thing b/c we used them as study guides for the final. Dr. Barrow is sweet w/ great sense of humor. I enjoyed the course.
Very very intelligent, you will learn a lot in any of her classes. Her paper topics are a little vague so you have to fish for topics. She's really nice. Be ready to read CONSTANTLY.
Very hard to make good grades even in the 102 class. I was one of the only ones who came to every class and I was the ONLY one who ever talked in class but I still got a C on our class participation part. Be ready to read often.
I HATED this class. She's very pompous and rude. She's really intellectual, and it comes across as condescending. She loves what she teaches, but she didn't make me love it. Go to every class, take notes, write perfect papers, and you might get a B. I made a good grade, but I busted my a**, and my other classes suffered.
If hadn't been for this class, my semester would have been much easier. I earned an A in the class, but I had to work extremely hard to get it. Dr. Barrow assigns a lot of work, and it is all rather time consuming. If you want an understanding teacher who rewards you for really trying, do NOT take this class.
Overall, not a bad class. I didn't really feel like I learned that much, although some of the reading assignments (and there are a lot) were interesting. She seemed to like my writing style, which helped me to earn an A, but I did work really hard and spent time in the writing center. *Note: she is VERY "liberal", however you feel about that.
The class was okay. As far as teachers go, she was generally fair. Take good notes, you will need them for the massive final. She will look over your papers before you turn them in. While she won't tell you everything that is wrong, she will give you some good suggestions. If you are busy, she will give you can extension on papers.
Okay well first of all, she comes off as being extremely rude once you get to know her. She's very intelligent but it's like 'I'm much smarter than you' type of way. And you know, if you got A's in a101, you will probably get B's in 102 with her. she's hard to please, she makes me feel stupid, and I don't feel like I can talk to her at all.this suc
I took her class over the summer, she assigned way too much reading, 5 novels in 5 weeks. She likes to make people feel less than her. Also she is not nice, she is rude, and gives terrible advice! She actually told an undecided student, that who you work with is much more importiant that what you are doing- so do what your friends do! Come on!
Dr. Barrow had a very interesting class with TONS of opportunities for extra credit. She is no push-over as far as grading is concerned but it is all fair and easy to correct.
The first day of class, I thought she was very rude and full of herself, but after a few classes, I realized she wasn't rude(still a little full of herself though). If you go to class, read the novels, and have any sort of skill with expressing ideas and criticisms on paper you will do well. She will help you whenever you need it ,as well.
I really didn't care to much for her. She was very boring and I did not have fun in her class at all. She grades hard for it to be 102 class. Avoid taking her.
this class had a pretty intense workload considering it was english 102. lots of reading before every class and four papers (including a 8+ page research paper). also not the nicest person in the world. she can be really condescending and will randomly come down hard people in front of the whole class when they make a small mistake.
She is a terrible teacher. One of the worst ones I have ever had. DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT take her if you want to make anything higher than a C. She is unfair in her grading. She only cares about her own interests and doesnt give you the time of day if you ask her something. Terrible...Terrible....Terrible!! Dont take this class!
I loved Dr. Barrow. She knows so much about British society and culture, which made her very passionate about the subject. I felt like I learned alot from her. If you enjoy reading or just need an English class, take her!
Too difficult with non-honors courses. Honors courses, however, are a complete joke. Nice woman, but managed to take a subject that I was previously interested in and suck it dry. Inane conversation and ass kissing are a plus with Dr. Barrow, so be sure and sign up if that suits you.
Hard grader only looking for what she thinks is right. Does not accomadate to different learning styles. Strictly verbal.
English is my major and I have never disliked an english class so much! I love brit lit and still do but i didnt enjoy this class at all! she cant lead discussion and if you dont agree with her view of the readings then you are wrong! english is about your own understandings. for papers write what she wants to read
This is the worst teacher I have ever had! Her study guide for the exam is ridiculous. It took me over 8 hours to do. She is very condescending and she won't accept anything other than her own opinion. I am a straight A student and I have not made one A on any of the papers. DO NOT take her unless you wanna feel like killing yourself.
I would not recommend this teacher. I have always loved lit, but this class was a little boring. She was ok to listen to in class sometimes, but her grading is very difficult. I'm an A student and I didn't make n A on anything. Her final exam review is also ridiculousy long and half of the info isn't even on the test. I did everything I could to ge
I have never disliked a teacher SO much in my whole school career. First of all she plays the favorites game, if she doesn't like you, you're screwed and might as well drop the class. There is a RIDICULOUS amount of homework/papers/readings/assignments. She's VERY rude, **** and takes nothing into consideration. Do not take her whatever you do.
She's an amazing teacher, very interesting discussions. Work hard, do the readings, give assignments your all, and you'll do well. The people that don't like her probably skated through high school without anyone ever telling them that they were horrible writers. She's very willing to help. You can revise one paper, as well.
She is difficult and very intimidating, but if you show her that you care about doing well, she'll provide you with really helpful advice. I highly recommend talking with her outside of class -- she'll give you really good advice on how to write a good paper. You get out of this class what you put into it.
I LOVE THIS CLASS. The material is very interesting, and Barrow is an awesome teacher. She really cares about the material and leads interesting discussions, though I can see how somehow with less interest in literature could find the work daunting. If you take this class, DO THE READING, you'll be screwed if you don't.
She can be fun and the discussions are very interesting, but she grades REALLY hard on papers and there's not much room for error. Mess up one paper, and you're bound to fail the class. Meet with her outside of class a LOT to get a good grade and to understand what she actually wants.
I enjoyed Dr. Barrow. The assignment load was reasonable and the discussions generally interesting. She encourages students to express themselves. I do not feel as if I got to know her as well as other professors, she is not especially chatty, but I do think her nice.
Avoid taking this class. A very hard class for a general education course. She is very subjective to her own ideas, it is her way or the high way so to speak. she grades papers as if it is a graduate level course, she is extremely condescending and makes you feel incompetent. I dreaded going to this class and was possibly the worst class at UT
She grades very hard on the first paper; it gets slightly easier from then on. She requires a lot of reading out of the text book, at least 5 pages a night, but if you don't read it and can still participate in the discussion you are good to go. If you go to her office hours she can be helpful. Over all she is an okay teacher.
Terrible professor.
You do NOT need any of the books they say are required. trust me. Borrow from a friend if there's one assignment because no one does the readings and they arent counted nor helpful if you do them. I think she is a very nice lady The most important thing is to go to her office hours before every paper with a draft She's very helpful but grades hard
Great teacher. The first assignments seem awful, but it gets easier after that. Extremely considerate: if you have a problem, tell her ahead and she will work with you. Very fair and clear communication over what is expected. Relevant and practical lectures. Just do what she asks and you can't go wrong.
Really cool, genuinely wanted to know what we thought of the readings. If you write something she liked in your journal, she'll mentioned it in class and credit you. I wish it was a longer course, I want to take more classes with her in the future for sure.
Dr. Barrow was great. The course was very organized, which was a great benefit to me. I had several other professors in the same semester who were very scattered and organization was a breath of fresh air. The course load was very reasonable and her feedback was always constructive. I would suggest her to future students looking to take ENGL 360.
Dr. Barrow is a great professor. The course was well-organized (every assignment for the semester is listed in the syllabus), and the lectures were interesting and engaging. There's a fair amount of homework (weekly projects) but nothing too bad, and I actually felt like I learned a lot. You can be exempt from the final, which is a nice plus.
overall Dr. Barrow was a good teacher. My class section was about empathy which turned out to be a very interesting topic and Dr. Barrow allowed us to make our paper topics broader than just empathy. There is a lot of reading but it is for your own benefit. She offers a lot of bonus points and is very understanding about missing class. She clearly knows what she is talking about and is very helpful during office hours.
Dr. Barrow is very passionate about the subject she teaches. Attendance is preferred as attending discussion helps performance on the final exam. Reading the material is also necessary to success. If you do not enjoy reading, do not take an Intro to Fiction course. She allows one revision on 1 of the 3 papers. Utilize her and the writing center.
Dr. Barrow is an awesome teacher. If you put in the work, you'll get an A. SEE HER IN HER OFFICE HOURS FOR ANY HELP ON THE PAPER. She sees this as putting in effort and will grade a little bit more leniently if you get feedback. Plus her feedback is really good!
Where to begin ? Nice lady, but never gives clear explanation of what she wants. Assigns a big paper and then gives ruberic the day before it is due. Will tell you to include things in projects and then takes points off for it. Class is not super hard but definitely not a great teacher. Do not expect to learn a whole lot.
Dr. Barrow is wonderful at being available outside of class and gives good grades to students who demonstrate their motivation and intellect. She is entertaining, but you have to work to get a good grade, and there's a lot of work to be done. Pro tip: I would definitely recommend showing her a paper during office hours before turning it in.
I loved this class. Very self guided and clear grading instructions. You have a lot of free will in the class, and she's very personable
I took Dr. Barrow two semesters in a row, and she was a pretty solid choice. Her class is definitely not the most interesting in the world, but she is very clear about papers. She is so organized, so you always know what she expects. A little harsh, but overall just follow her rubric and you'll get an A.
Dr. Barrow is an average teacher who likes to wax poetically about her interests and beliefs rather than teach. This class was poorly organized and was built around an irrelevant and vague theme. Go to her office hours if you want a good grade on papers because she gives minimal feedback. If you subscribe to her way of thinking, you'll be fine.
This class was not enjoyable at all. The curriculum for 298 is kinda stupid but Barrow didn't make it any better. Class was boring and felt unnecessary. Drafts are due more than a week before the final paper is due. She is very helpful in office hours. Not hard to do well, but this class is not fun at all
She's a simple teacher. If you have any questions on your essays just ask her in office hours. I got above a 90 on all of my papers and got an A. Kinda boring and dumb but I got over it. She also does these self assessment papers that really helped me stay on track. And if you never missed a class she gave 5 extra points.
Dr. Barrow is a good teacher. She definitely holds you to a higher standard because it is an honors class. To ensure a good grade on your rough drafts and papers, GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. You have to grade yourself on participation, so try to answer questions, provide comments, and be engaged during groups and in class. She allows computers in class
Dr. Barrow is a pretty good teacher. She gives you the full syllabus for the whole semester, so try to work ahead, if possible. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. She really helps improve your papers, and you're more likely to get an A. She lets you grade yourself on participation, so try participate enough to give yourself an A. She has reading pop quizzes.
Professor Barrow is a really good teacher; she lets you know exactly what to expect. She's also very understanding and wants to help you. She often lets class out early, too, which is a major benefit. I would definitely take her again.
Professor Barrow is a hard grader with a tedious class. Her lectures were full of her own very blunt opinion. I took this class for Chancellor's Honors and I dreaded going every day. Her voice drones on and each reading assignment is more boring than the next. She took two months to give our class the grades for our first essay.
Robin is a tough grader who has lectures hard to follow on what she is actually explaining. On the other hand, she is great when you go to her office hours and helpful.
Very relaxed class, grades pretty easy
She was a great teacher and put a lot of work into grading papers with good feedback.
Shes blunt to the point it can come off rude. I wouldnt take a class with her again. Lectures drag on and it seems liken time isnt on your side.
Classes are enjoyable and interesting, but she does take attendance everyday, so don't skip. There are five short assignments, and essay, and an annotated bibliography. As long as you read the books, follow the rubrics for the assignments, and go to class, you'll be fine.
Obviously loves English and writing. Very specific criteria for papers and assignments. Very little assignments outside of papers and no extra credit, so do well. She gives good feedback and wants you to do well, but often times her comments come across as rude. Overall decent teacher, but not my personal favorite
I'm normally not a huge fan of English classes, but I really enjoyed taking Dr. Barrow's. She makes her grading criteria extremely clear and is very helpful during office hours (which she holds regularly). I also loved that she allowed us to choose our own topics for essays because it meant that I put a lot of work and care into the final products.
Dr. Barrow is so nice! She grades papers really leniently and actually gives feed back so when you revise you can make it better. She allows 4 absences. She is kind of boring but really a solid English teacher who makes it really clear what you need to do.
She just asked us in class to take a moment and write reviews for her. She is a very slow grader, and she has thus far not provided a lot of feedback. I will say she is competent, and you can succeed in this class, but it may be a frustrating semester. She likes to shut down viewpoints she disagrees with.
This course was challenging, but Dr. Barrow made it very manageable. She was clear on her expectations & always available to help with assignments. Would definitely recommend.
Barrow was a pretty standard English professor. Not a super hard grader, accessible outside of class, and knows her stuff. She definitely takes a long time to get back with grades for assignments, and assigns some unnecessary readings, but overall, she gives good feedback.
Dr. Barrow is always a respectful and caring professor when it comes to helping you form your research questions and papers. This class is by no means easy. However, I never found myself confused about the grade I received or what I could have developed more in my papers. She isn't easy, but she most definitely made me develop as a writer.
Dr. Robin Barrow was overall a good professor. I felt like she was fairly generous with grading and extensions. However, a large portion of the grade for the class fell into very few assignments. Additionally, lectures can drag on. She does make herself very available, and she is always down to provide feedback.
It takes a while to get feedback, but when received, it is good feedback. Office hours are spectacularly helpful. She is passionate about English and her students. If you work hard, you will succeed in the class.
Dr. Barrow is probably one of the best English teachers I've ever had. Her lectures are very interesting and the course assignments are very clear so you know exactly what she is looking for. The best thing about this course is how organized it is. Dr. Barrow is great at using canvas to post exactly what is happening each class. Loved this class!
She was sweet sometimes but very intimidating . She graded my papers fairly hard, and it is a reading and writing intensive class.
She is a great teacher and really passionate about her work. I really enjoyed her lectures. There is a lot of reading and writing, so get ready. I would recommend going to her office hours because she gives great feedback on your papers. Overall she is an awesome teacher!
Had a lot of fun in this class. Would recommend taking Dr. Barrow. She was very organized during class and her lectures were pretty interesting.
If you want to learn how to write professionally, improve your resume, and teamwork skills take this class.
She's a decent teacher and does try to make the material easy to understand. She grades pretty tough, especially during the presentation requirement. The class itself is easy, especially if you try hard on the papers. Go to all the individual appointments you can because it will help you.
I don't get why Dr. Barrow's rating is so moderate. I really enjoyed her, and her class wasn't that difficult. If you go to her office hours or make a few scheduled appointments, it's a pretty easy A. Make sure to participate--she likes students who do. She's a solid choice and really cares about english (also the material is pretty interesting).
Took this as an online class that offered 2 teachers. She made this class so much harder than the other teacher. Ridiculous amounts of busy work that hasnt helped me at all. All of it is time consuming and she is very picky about assignments. Also just a rude person in general when talking about her experiences and over email. Would not take again
Dr. Barrow is great if you participate and put in the effort, but there is a lot of busy work and quizzes. I have seen emails where she has come off rude and a little sassy. It is A LOT of work for just an online course and the directions can come off as confusing. Get ready for a lot of time on Zoom and Microsoft Word.
Lectures are boring. Weekly Zoom sessions. My roommate took this class and had to attend 2 zoom sessions the whole semester and wrote like 3 papers. We had weekly quizzes and assignments and a rough draft or final draft due every week. Also had to peer review every person in your groups paper. I do not feel any more prepared for writing in wrkplce
Dr. Barrow is like that old librarian who is mean to her students for no reason. She wants to gives F's on papers because she can. The fact that her students do not have a PhD in English such as she does is beyond her comprehension. The only thing I learned in this class is that the business world is better with her NOT writing in the workplace!
Honestly, the class wasnt hard. But she makes it miserable. She hates men, is rude as can be, and has no joy in her life - its pretty obvious - so she takes it out on her students. Steer clear of her, she is awful
Easy B, but you gotta work for an A. It's not the hardest class, but you will have to apply yourself and actually do the work. If you get an A, you EARNED IT. Dr. Barrow, burnout and senioritis is not a fun combination.
Get ready for zoom sessions and so much busy work. Waste of time. Emailing her is not effective as she replies in a rude manner. Does not grade her endless papers/assignments as stated. Compared to the other prof who taught this course we did 4x the amount of work they did. DO NOT TAKE!! save your time and money! Did not prepare me for anything.
While this class was not the most interesting class, it was actually not that bad. I loved Dr. Barrow. She genuinely cares about the novels we read and is very knowledgeable. However, a lot of the assignments were really boring and the quizzes were a little too specific. Overall not too hard, as long as you read or do research you will be fine.
Don't take her class. Literally take anyone else. She is very rude and gives so much stupid work
DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE. Very very hard grader!!!!! and so so so much unnecessary work. Just rude and makes you feel stupid
Barrow never has a kind word for anyone, never cracks a smile, never looks like she's not miserable. I've never had a prof constantly hateful to students and the world in general like Barrow. Even during Covid she went out of her way to be purposely rude. I'm an A student in all classes except this one. Worst online class, unclear, miserable. RUN!
Dr. Barrow is incredibly helpful and an amazing teacher. She shows she cares about her students in many ways (i.e. helping those who have questions about other classes, checking in on students that seem to be having a rough time, and helping to make the transition to campus life easier.) I strongly recommend taking her classes.
I don't usually like english classes, but I genuinely enjoyed Dr. Barrow's class. You can go to her office hours before a big assignment is due and she will straight up tell you what she would change about it. Very clear grading criteria listed for assignments. Exams are very similar to review material.
Dr. Barrow is incredibly sweet & she will leave nice comments on all of your assignments. She genuinely engages with classroom material, and she has a solid understanding of how to equitably support her students. Super accessible - emailed her once at 2AM and got a response within the hour. I would highly recommend Dr. Barrow!
Difficult to sit through during class; I felt like most of my time in class was wasted listening to her explain how to use Microsoft Word, and then having to spend several hours a night on homework outside of class.
Honestly 10/10 class, her class was pretty relaxed. There are lots of group discussions which is why I put attendance is mandatory, since it counts for participation; However you can make up missed attendance online which saved me by a lot. The work was pretty simple if you payed attention to the notes she gives online. Barely used the ebook here.
Dr. Barrow was excellent. Always quick to respond to emails. Helpful lecture videos. No textbook but there are five required novels, most of which you can find for less than $1 as ebooks. Very fast to grade work. Modules were open so that you could work ahead. I thoroughly enjoyed this course.
